NOTES FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Laura M. Zervic Executive Director
Welcome to the 93rd season of the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre! As we re-open, I reflect on the year that we have had and all of the people and things for which I am truly grateful. First on that list is the dedicated, talented and extremely capable and hardworking staff here at The Civic. They have endured so many changes and challenges and have adapted to each change and rose above every challenge. Many of them took on new positions during the pandemic and each of them performed extraordinary duties—our Technical Director took over our website and other IT-related tasks; our Director of Education and Outreach took on the marketing and social media responsibilities while continuing to safely offer a variety of virtual and inperson educational programming to hundreds of students; our Scenic Design Team doubled as graphic designers to assist with marketing efforts; our Box Office Assistant became a team of one and personally called hundreds of patrons when shows were cancelled and fielded many phone calls in absence of a full business office staff; our Director of Volunteers stepped in this role, while still serving as Production Stage Manager; our Scenic Carpenters and Properties Master, scraped, sanded, patched and painted the
dressing rooms, hung drapes, restored the gong and cleaned chandeliers; our Resident Lighting and Sound Designer took on that role, and continues to serve as Master Electrician, all while attending ASL classes; our Artistic Director served as parking lot attendant; our Costume Design Team took the opportunity to clean and organize hundreds of costumes and accessories; and our newly formed Marketing Team began less than a month ago and hit the ground running to prepare for our-reopening. I am grateful for the continued support of our many donors and foundations that enabled us to remain in operation over this past year. I am filled with gratitude every time I walk into the auditorium and look up at the beautiful, unblemished ceiling dome. The plaster restoration project was made possible through the generous support from the Suzanne U D Parish Foundation, the Dorothy U Dalton Foundation, and the Irving S Gilmore Foundation. And would not have happened without the vision and motivation of Ben Zylman, who seized the opportunity during the shutdown to get this accomplished. Many thanks to: a devoted corps of Volunteers who stuck with us, through thick and thin, without whom we could not have endured these past twenty months. They helped call patrons after shows were cancelled, organized our Library, assisted with painting dressing rooms, formed a Gardening Committee to help with landscaping around the facilities, helped with tech dinner, celebrated a Volunteers picnic, ushered for our Academy Skills Shares to list only a few ways in which our Volunteers devoted their time; a passionate group of volunteers who created awareness of opportunities within our organization to make meaningful changes in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion; Our dedicated Board of Directors, who lead with thoughtfulness and who model the positive change they are driving throughout our organization; My husband, for his support and always making dinner, and my children, who teach me every day, about kindness, acceptance and SnapChat; You, our Valued Patrons, who continue to support us and our programs. We would not be here without you.
We acknowledge that the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre occupies the ancestral lands of the Council of the Three Fires – the Ojibwe, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi. We recognize and respect the Indigenous nations of the Great Lakes region, also known as the Anishinaabe (Ah-nish-nah-bay), as the stewards of this land and acknowledge the sacred lands of all Indigenous Peoples and their continued presence. DIRECTOR'S NOTES Welcome back to the theatre! I am honored to direct and choreograph this opening production of the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre’s 93rd Season. It’s been many months since we congregated in this space. Take a second to breathe it in (with your mask on, of course).
Anthony J. Hamilton Director
There have been so many things taking place in our world since we last met: the Black Lives Matter movement, global protests and demonstrations, a contentious presidential election, the ongoing fight for women’s equality, queer rights, immigration reform, and of course...COVID-19. No one has gone through the past 2 years unscathed. Where do we go from here?
When I was approached to direct The 1940s Radio Hour, my question was...why now? What does this show have to offer audiences in 2021? The early 1940s was an era of major change for our country: women joined the workforce while “the boys” were overseas; FDR was serving his (unprecedented) third term as president; the attack on Pearl Harbor had formally thrust our nation into WWII; by February 1942, Japanese Americans were being forced into internment camps, and Jim Crow laws were in effect throughout the nation (not just the southern states). One of the highlights of this era is the music! These songs transcend age, race, education, or economic status. The music serves as a catalyst for unity. It brings us together. Some of you can reach back and touch the 1940s. Others remember stories that parents and grandparents shared about their upbringing. I ask you: what has changed? What has not? The 1940s Radio Hour is a “period piece'' but I realize that we are still struggling to make sense of our world and our relationships with one another. While staging this production, I operated with a strong sense of community. That is, after all, what this show is truly about. Community is what the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre is about and (if I may say) it’s what our country should be about. As always, the final step in a show’s process is our audience. Thank you for being with us. We invite you to sit back, relax, and allow yourself to be transported back in time: December 21, 1942. THE KALAMAZOO CIVIC THEATRE

He has restored a Kalamazoo landmark house on South St., just 2 blocks from the Civic. He has previously crewed on numerous shows, and his favorites include By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, Hairspray, and Mary Poppins. Rachel Tuba (Scenic Artist/Scenic Design Intern) has lived her whole life in Michigan, hailing from Southeast Michigan. She is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a Major in Entertainment Design and Technology and a Minor in Studio Art. Beyond Theater Arts, Rachel enjoys classical music and performance, historical research in art and mythology, and roleplay games such as Dungeons and Dragons. When not working, she can be found writing or illustrating or playing around in Virtual Reality.
Kris Tyrrell (Rehearsal Assistant Stage Manager) moved to Kalamazoo over 50 years ago from her native Chicago to join the Civic’s internship program and never left. Kris has performed over 100 roles at virtually every theatre in Kalamazoo, as well as serving in every possible role on technical crews. Making what feels like the inevitable segue to directing, she has helmed productions for the Mainstage, Carver Center Studio, and Parish Theatre, as well as for Whole Art Theatre, and API Theatre. Most recent appearances include Ripcord, the voice of Nancy in Ann and Almost, Maine. Kris will be directing this season's production of Leaving Iowa.
