Director’s Note

Beloved by audiences around the world, The Sound of Music is a story of family, faith and home. Set in one of the darkest periods in world history, its universal themes are wrapped in a sense of hope and optimism.

The same sense of hope and optimism that binds all of us together and gives us strength to endure, during the most trying of times. As chaotic and troubling as our world is today, this gentle tale serves as a timely reminder of what is truly important. I have loved working with the talented actors, crew members, musicians, designers and production team that make up The Sound of Music company. Their commitment, support and hard work have impressed me throughout the process and their kindness has been a constant source of inspiration. To all who have played a part in bringing this show to the stage, I say “thank you”! I would also like to thank you, our wonderful audience, for joining us on this journey. I hope you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you! On behalf of the entire company of The Sound of Music, I’d like to wish you a joyous holiday season!

Meet the Cast Nicky Aiello (Mother Abbess) Although Nicky has been to The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre for years to see her kids onstage many times, this is her first time on the stage herself.

She currently works as a School-Based Therapist with Communities In Schools of Kalamazoo and sees clients in private practice at Kerby Psychological Services in Kalamazoo. She has six amazing children: Sarah, Becca, Noah, Mary, Aaron, and Anna and is married to Deacon Jason Aiello. She wants to thank her children for encouraging and inspiring her to audition for The Sound of Music. She describes being in this production as “magical and life changing.” Thank you to Ben and Marie for this opportunity and for helping me recognize my talent and feel worthy of the Mother Abbess role. I am truly blessed!

Terese Banner (Nun, Fraulein Schweiger, Party Guest) Terese is a longtime Civic volunteer both on and off stage. Some of Terese’s favorite roles onstage at the Civic have been Mother in A Christmas Story, Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jeannette in The Full Monty. She is thrilled to be back on the beautiful Civic stage. Terese retired after 32 years teaching first grade (the best grade) and is now a reading support aide. She dedicates this performance to her late husband, Don Banner, and her three amazing sons. May you bloom and grow forever.

Bri Berning (Louisa) Bri is excited to make her Civic debut in The Sound of Music. She grew up watching theater, and when given the opportunity in middle school, I joined in. Her favorite part about being involved in theatre is getting to come together as a community and a company to create something magical. Some of her favorite roles are Janet - Rocky Horror, Ado Annie – Oklahoma, and Aladdin – Choreographer. When not in rehearsal, she’s usually at another rehearsal, she loves to engulf herself in the world of theater, she’s also going to school for Elementary Education. “I would like to thank everyone who gave me this opportunity and to those cheering me on and helping me continue to grow.”

Anna Cafagna (Nun, Postulant, Saengerbund Trio) This is Anna’s fourth consecutive show with the Kalamazoo Civic, and she is so excited and honored to be a part of one of her favorite musicals since childhood. You could say it is one of her favorite things! She has greatly appreciated this time working with her wonderful cast mates and the incredible production team, and has loved working as the dance captain for this show. She would like to thank all of her friends and family for the endless love and support, and wishes everyone a happy holiday season and hopes they enjoy the show!

Meet the Cast Eloise Cameron (Gretl) Eloise, a proud Kalamazoo first grader, is thrilled to make her theatrical debut!

Creating art, making music with family, and imaginative play with her siblings bring Eloise great joy. Jumping onto the stage is a natural progression. Eloise is grateful to her directors for this fabulous opportunity to play Gretl in the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre von Trapp family.

Olivia Gray (Sister Sophia) Hello! My name is Olivia Gray and I have lived in Kalamazoo since July of this year.

This will be my very first show with the Civic and I am so excited to have found community here at the Civic! I am a local worship pastor at KFirst Assembly of God. I love to sing and act! This is my first show in several years, I am honored to be playing the role of “Sister Sophia”!

The Sound of Music was the show that made me fall in love with theater way back in 2014. It was my first show ever and I played the role of Maria in my junior year of High School. Needless to say, this is extremely exciting and nostalgic for me! The cast in this show is incredible, I can’t wait to share our hard work with the community. I want to thank Ben, Marie and the rest of the incredible crew for the opportunity and working so hard to make this show happen!

Abbie Halifax (Nun, Party Guest) Abbie is no stranger to the stage. She has been performing in musicals since the early age of 1 ½ and is thrilled to be making her Civic debut in The Sound of Music. Abbie’s favorite roles include young Cosette at Portage Northern. singing, putting on costumes, and saying lines. One and The Music Man, Six and Sound of Music are her favorite shows. When not in rehearsal, she enjoys singing, dancing, writing, drawing, and playing the French horn.

Abbie would like to thank her mom and dad.

Elsa Halifax (Nun, Baroness Elberfeld) Elsa is thrilled to be making her Civic Theatre debut with her daughter as nuns. When she isn’t on stage, Elsa can be found leading worship, teaching music and teaching Young S’s. She would like to thank her husband, Mike, and her 3 children for all of their support.

Rebekah Hill (Marie Rainer) Rebekah is thrilled to be making her Civic debut in this dream role!

Rebekah holds a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance and has performed in both musical theatre and opera. Favorite past credits include Katherine Plumber (Newsies), Kate Mullins (Titanic), Cinderella (Into the Woods), Marian Paroo (The Music Man), Pamina (The Magic Flute), and Lucy (The Lion, the Witch, and the

Meet the Cast Wardrobe). Along with performing, Rebekah maintains a private voice studio in Plainwell and teaches ages 6-adult! She has also music directed various youth productions in Michigan and Pennsylvania. He got started in theatre in the KKOS (Kalamazoo Kids On Stage) program, and continued theatre in Portage West Middle School and Portage Central High School. Some of his favorite roles/shows include: Ladahlord in “James and the Giant Peach; Rooster Hannigan in “Annie”; and Moonface Martin in “Anything Goes”. Peter’s favorite part about theatre is experiencing the creative process. He loves seeing people cooperate to create new universes for other people to witness. When not in rehearsals, he is a Computer Science student and is taking a gap semester.

He works part-time at Noodles and Co. Whether if its coding, painting, writing, or learning how to sew, Peter enjoys being creative the most. “Thank you to my friends and family for encouraging me and supporting me.”

Lucas Mansberger (Captain Georg van Trapp) The Sound of Music marks Lucas’ nineth production with the Civic, stepping back onto the Civic stage after last appearing in Civic’s production of Oklahoma (2001.) No stranger to theatre, Lucas was first introduced to it when he was a kid, his mother would haul him around to her rehearsals at various theaters throughout southwest Michigan where he’d get into trouble while she musically directed. His favorite roles include Orin Scrivello in Little Shop; Frankie from Forever Plaid; and “wide-eyed Civic newbie” in the Jim Carver farewell production of Fiddler on the Roof. When not in rehearsals, Lucas helps clients build a better future at Breakwater Capital. “I would like to thank my wife for daring us both to do this show, my colleagues Kara and Ross for their warm support, and my mother for her babysitting!”

Sarah Mansberger (Elsa Schraeder) Sarah is delighted to return to the Civic stage in a dream role. She previously performed in two shows at the Civic - State Fair in 1999, where she met her (now) husband, Lucas Mansberger aka Captain von Trapp; and Crazy for You in 2000. Her very first role was as Maleficent in the 5th grade school production of Sleeping Beauty. Favorites since then include Meg Brockie in Brigadoon and Mae Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie. When not in rehearsal, she raises three awesome kids - Lucy, Sybil and Isaac - and serves as Executive Director of Career Connect Secondary Programs

Erika Mehring (Sister Berthe) Erika is a junior studying Choral Music Education at Western Michigan University. She is so excited to have a second chance at performing in this show, as she was two weeks away from performing back in March of 2020. The Sound of Music is her 30th production and 3rd time being a nun! She would like to dedicate this performance to her late Oma and Opa, who not only instilled a love of music and theatre in her at a young age, but embraced their German and Austrian backgrounds as well.

Evie Meskin (Marta) Evie is delighted to be performing in the Sound of Music at the Civic.

Her favorite role was playing Les in Newsies and Allie Square in Polkadots. She also enjoys participating in the Penguin Project each year. Evie loves being involved in theater because it’s fun to meet new people and express herself through new characters and stories. When not in rehearsal Evie likes hanging out with friends and doing arts and crafts. Evie would like to thank her mom and dad for helping her memorize lines, prepare for

auditions, and for driving her back and forth to rehearsals.

Micha E. Myers (Nun, Party Guest) Micha is thrilled to be back on stage this season. Other theatre credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Christine) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Janet) at the Old Town Playhouse in Traverse City and Wizard of Oz and The Music Man (Marian) at Northport Performing Arts Center. Her favorite role she’s ever played was Gus in Cooking with Gus at Northport Performing Arts Center. Micha, originally from Traverse City, has lived in Kalamazoo since September of 2020 with her husband, Scott, and children. Interests other than theatre include playing tennis with the family, traveling, being a Mom Taxi, and supporting her kids’ athletic and musical adventures.

Robert James Piellusch (Baron Elberfeld) Robert James Piellusch is originally from Douglaston, New York City. He grew up hearing Broadway Musical’s on his parent’s record players and saw his first play on Broadway: “Man of La Mancha” with his older brother Michael. He auditioned in 2006 for “The Sound of Music” and was cast as Baron Elberfeld. Since then he has been involved with the Civic as an Usher and has appeared in five productions at the Civic and many other roles in the Kalamazoo area Community Theaters as well as everal local films. “I cannot thank Ben Zylman and Marie Kerstetter enough for giving me my start in theater

Etta Poer (Brigitta) Etta is a 7th grader at Maple Street Magnet Middle School for the Arts where she is a second-year member of the choir and performed in last year’s Camp Rock (Luka Williams).

Past Civic credits include Puffs (Megan Jones) and Disney’s Descendants (Ensemble). Etta enjoys baking and recipe testing at home, and loves to play her guitar, make videos online, and sing. She is grateful to Ben, Marie, and Sara for the opportunity to be part of this company- and thanks her friends, family, and Mrs. Davis, her choir director for all the love and support.

Aster Sage (Nun, Saengerbund Trio) Aster (they/she/ he) is excited to join another Civic show! Aster has been volunteering at The Civic since 2017 and loves working on-stage and off-stage. They currently plan on going back to KVCC for their studies and is an Outreach Facilitator at Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan, Where they bring Girl Scouts curriculum to schools and places like the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club. Some of Aster’s favorite moments at the Civic include when they got to be in a show with their sister Terra in “Meet me in St. Louis”, when they played Cruella Deville in the CYT’s “Descendants: the Musical”.

Gwen Saulino (Sister Margaretta) Gwen is thrilled to return to the Civic after performing in Oklahoma (2016) and Meet Me in St Louis {2022.) She got her theatrical start in high school musicals and played the lead role of Ruth in her senior year in the play “Dear Ruth”. Gwen’s favorite part about theatre is being on stage, being a part of a company, and getting to know cast mates and loving her time there!

Her favorite roles include Kinky Boots/ ensemble, Into the Woods/ Jack’s Mom, and The Odd Couple (female version)/ Vera. When not in rehearsal she enjoys watching her amazing grand babies every weekday morning, singing and cross stitching. Gwen would like to thank her husband Charlie and her girls Mackenzie and Hannah for being patient and encouraging.

Trevor Schuster (Kurt) Trevor is a 6th grader and is already planning his future as a professional actor and would love his first job to be a performer on Broadway. He was last seen onstage at the Civic as David Square in Polkadots: The Cool Kids Music and recently as Sydney Grimm in his middle school’s production of Big Bad. Trevor enjoys soccer, playing video games, and hanging out with his cats and friends.

Meet the Cast Marissa Toweson (Liesl) Marissa is a 10th grader at Hackett.

Her very first Musical was “The Sound of Music” as Marta.

Marissa has been in two other Civic productions- “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and “Matilda. It is exciting to be back for this production of the “The Sound of Music”. It has been a great experience working with thi cast and crew. They are wonderful and talented people.

Beyond the spotlight, she leads a busy life. She plays basketball and tennis at Hackett Catholic Prep. Her three older siblings live in Cininnati and she is happy that all 3 of them will be coming to this production. Marissa would like to thank her mom and dad for all the support.

Kristin Warren (Frau Schmidt) Kristin is excited to make her Civic debut in The Sound of Music. She got her theatrical start in her high school theater program called Performing Arts Company with the most amazing teacher, Robin Nott. Some of her favorite roles include Mom, Junie B. Jones the Musical; Katie Nana/ Chorus, Mary Poppins; and Egg/ chorus, Something Rotten. When not in rehearsal, Kristin spends time with her four girls and their activities, work, as well as finishing her degree. Kristin would like to thank her sister Mary, for the encouragement to branch out, and her family for their support.

Production Team and Crew Marie McColley-Kerstetter (Music Director) Marie is originally from a small New England town called Ware, Mass. She got her undergraduate degree from Seton Hill College in Greensburg, Pa. and her master’s degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. Many will recognize Marie as the illustrious “Ms K” who taught music in the Kalamazoo Public schools for over 35 years. While teaching she received the Excellence in Education Award 10 times as well as other musical awards from her schools.

Marie has been Musical Director at the Kalamazoo Civic for almost 50 years. She has been accompanist, assistant musical director, private voice teacher, and Musical Director for Civic Summer Theatre, Civic Youth Theatre, many Civic Camps, Civic Parish Theatre and of course Civic Mainstage. Marie was lucky enough to learn and perfect her craft observing and working with such great directors as Jim Carver, Art Nemitz, Kathy Mulay, David Grapes, DeeDee Sandt, Larry Raben, Stephen Brotebeck, Michelle Hopkins, Sandy Simpson Bremer, Sarah Sherman, our new artistic director- Anthony J Hamilton and of course the wonderful Ben Zylman, who directed today’s show. Marie has loved being part of the Civic’s history. She has musical directed so many shows that some of them she has done 3 or 4 times. Among her favorites she lists: Godspell, Baby, Fiddler on the Roof, A Little Night Music, Evita, State Fair, Crazy for You, Hello Dolly, The Wizard of Oz, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, Merrily We Roll Along, The Music Man, JC Superstar, 1940’s Radio Hour, Newsies and so many others.

Along the way she was honored as a recipient of the Community Medal of Arts, The Larkin Noble Award and last fall she received the Most Distinguished Alumni Award from Seton Hill University. Marie thanks Audrey her water water therapist for her help and Westminster Presbyterian for their continued love and support. Finally Marie dedicates this show to her two sisters Aggie and Margaret.

Production Team and Crew Sara Sherman (Choreographer) Sara is thrilled to join the Civic staff as Resident Teaching Artist! Sara has taught for various early childhood and performing arts programs throughout both Kalamazoo and Chicago since 2012. Sara is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s Bachelor of Theatre Arts (BTA) program and is a dance instructor at Excel Dance Centre, where she also serves as Early Childhood Director.

Sara has enjoyed volunteering at the Civic for years, appearing in productions like Smokey Joe’s Café, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and The 1940s Radio Hour. Civic Choreography credits include: The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Rainbow Fish Musical, and Disney’s Newsies.

Ben Zylman (Director) Ben is a multi-award winning actor/director with over 45 years of experience and 130 productions to his credit. He has directed many Civic productions, including Over the River and Through the Woods, Love, Loss and What I Wore, Crazy for You, Broadway Bound, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Annie, The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Gala Reunion Concert, Gypsy, Mame, Oklahoma! and the award-winning Forever Plaid. Additionally, Ben has directed The Night Before Christmas, The Remarkable Farkle McBride and Peter Vs. the Wolf for the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and The United Teens Talent Show for The Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo. Named Actor of the Year by the Kalamazoo Gazette for his performance in The Nerd, Ben also received the Excellence in Acting Award from the American Association of Community Theatre for his work in The Boys Next Door. He was given our Excellence in Performance Award and People’s Choice Award for his portrayal of Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone and our Excellence in Performance Award for Applegate in Damn Yankees. In 2013 Ben received CTAM’s Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award for his work in The Imaginary Invalid. In recognition of his many accomplishments, Ben has been presented with the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo’s Community Medal of Arts Award (2005) and our Larkin H. Noble Award (2015).

Production Team and Crew Emily Awe (Dresser) Emily is excited to be back on crew for her 13th production at the Civic!

Audiences will remember her as Rose Smith in Meet Me in St. Louis and Alex in Lost Boy Found in Whole Foods, and a member of the ensemble in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Elf the Musical, and Big Fish, the latter of which she names as her favorite Civic experience to date.

When not at the theatre, Emily coaches middle school and high school speech and debate, and serves on the Michigan chapter of the National Speech and Debate Association Leadership Team.

She is also an avid playwright, with her play Proverbs 17:9, or the Redeemed being a 2022 regional finalist at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

Logan Awe (Floor/Fly Crew) Logan is a Kalamazoo native and no stranger to theatre. At the Civic, audiences will remember him as Jack Kelly in Newsies, John Truitt in Meet Me in St. Louis, and a member of the ensemble in Big Fish, Elf the Musical, War Paint, and Hello, Dolly!. Most recently, he made his Farmer’s Alley debut as Uno in their production of Addy and Uno. By day, Logan is a licensed medical massage therapist and works out of Health Choice Chiropractic Center LLC. Brian R Bay (A1 Operator) Brian got started in theatre when he saw Pippin at the Civic while in High School in 1978. His Drama teacher was Charlemagne. He was completely entranced by the magic in the production. Following his passion for theatre, he has now been involved in over 40 productions at the Civic and

counting! Some of his favorite roles to date include Rock of Ages, Dennis Dupree; The World Goes Round, Soloist/ Chorus member; Sounds of the 60’s, Soloist/Chorus member. When not in rehearsal he is a Real Estate Broker with a wide variety of recreational interests (karaoke, trivia, gaming and more.)

Brian would like to thank Martha Bay, his wife, whom he met here, for all her support and her creativity which inspires him.

Ryan Burke (Scenic Carpenter, Floor Manager, Floor/Fly Crew) Ryan is a Michigan native from the Croswell Opera House in Adrian. After a summer at the Tibbits Opera House, he has spent the rest of his career in the Kalamazoo Civic scene shop.

Whether it’s building scenery or singing and dancing backstage, Ryan isn’t alive until the house is open and the first cue is called. He is a kind soul and wonderful friend; 100% dedicated to the new vision and core values of the Civic Theatre. You’ll like this guy.

Jamie Chapin (Properties Artisan) Jamie graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2021 with a Bachelor’s in Entertainment Design & Technology.

They have worked with Cedar Point: Live Entertainment (2022) and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis (2023) since graduation. Some of their favorite hobbies are crocheting, drawing, and playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Production Team and Crew Elvin E. East (Light Board Operator) Elvin has been involved in over seventy shows at the Civic over the past seventeen seasons and is a talented stage manager and light board operator. His favorites have been the Shakespeare productions, Senior Readers Theatre, and Tenderly: The Rosemary Clooney Musical.

When he is not at the Civic he enjoys being a Canadian, reading mysteries, and raising donkeys. “Thanks to my wonderful wife, Pat Erwin, for her support and my freedom.”

Lisa Grace (Playback Operator) Lisa is thrilled to return to the Civic!

She’s been involved with several Civic productions over the years including Imaginary Invalid (2012), The Dining Room (2017), Radiation: A Month of Sun Days (2018), and The Importance of Being Earnest (2020.) Some of Lisa’s favorite roles include: Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest, Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie. When not in rehearsal she spends her time as a Certified Medical Assistant at Bronson and also enjoys sewing, painting, crafting and spending time with her Grandson. Lisa would like to thank Nate Oddy and Josh, Mari & Ronnie Oddy.

Aubrey Hansen (Follow Spot Operator) This is Aubrey’s 2nd show with the Civic and she is very happy to be involved in this production of The Sound of Music.

Elia Ingerham (A2 Operator) After taking a few acting classes in the area, Elia decided to serve as a mentor for the 2022 Penguin Project Production of School House Rock Live! Jr. and fell

in love with the process of mounting a show. Since then, she has worked on a variety of plays such as Big Fish (2023) and Barbecue (2023). Elia would like to thank her family and the Civic staff.

Stacey Jaeger (Production Stage Manager) Stacey is excited to have been hired at the Civic after her year as an intern.

Originally from Iowa, where she grew up doing all things theatre, Stacey finished school at Beloit College before joining the Civic staff in 2021. Some of her favorite stage management experiences are productions of Twelfth Night in her hometown, The Moors at Beloit, and Murder on the Orient Express at the Civic. She’d like to thank her family for helping her get settled in the Kalamazoo area and a few of her mentors: Marina Bergenstock, Grant Freeman, Lisa Brannan, and Alicia Bailey.

Olivia Johnston (Assistant Stage Manager) Olivia (she/they) is thrilled to be continuing their Stage Manager journey here at the Civic. Olivia enjoys the behind-the-scenes aspects of theater and is ready to lend their talents as Stage Manager for Big Fish. They have enjoyed working with all the cast and crew and hope that you enjoy the magic they have created. This will be Olivia’s first production with the Kalamazoo Civic Theater and their ninth production as Stage Manager overall.

Production Team and Crew Kelsey Jordan (Dresser) Kelsey is so excited to be a dresser for this amazing show. Kelsey is currently Assistant Stage Manager for Cats the musical for the penguin project. Kelsey has been involved with the civic for 12 years. Kelsey hasn’t been on crew since 2017 she is really excited that she is back for more theater. But now she is more involved with theater after graduating college this year with Center Stage Theater and the Civic.

Tina Jordan (Dresser) Tina is excited to make her Civic debut!

Her performance background has been primarily as a dancer/choreographer and got started in theatre by directing shows when her kids were in elementary school. Tina’s favorite part about theatre is the magic of bringing a story to life with live actors in front of a live audience. Anything can happen and that makes it so exciting!! A few of her favorite productions she been included in are Alma Hicks in Music Man, Choreographer Beauty and the Beast, Choreographer Wizard of Oz. When not on stage she works as a literacy specialist. She loves to hike and kayak and spend time with her family. Tina would like to thank her supportive and loving husband.

Elaine Kauffman (Costume Designer) Elaine first joined the Civic staff in 1998 as our Costume Designer. She left to create her own custom clothing design business, Elaine K Designs which she has run for the past 18 years.

She returned to the Civic as Costume Designer in 2018. She graduated from WMU with a degree in Fashion Design and has over 25 years of professional costume design working at almost

every theatre in the Kalamazoo area including the Barn Theatre, 3-D Touring Productions, WMU Dance Dept., WMU Opera, Kalamazoo College Theatre Dept., Farmers Alley Theatre and many other freelance costume design projects. One of her favorite costuming experiences was creating the “creature costume” for a horror movie filmed in Kalamazoo. Outside of the theatre, Elaine enjoys the art of cheese making!

David Kyhn (Scenic Artist, Projection Designer, Charge Painter) David has served on the Civic s staff since the summer of 2000. Over that time, it has been his pleasure to work with the Civic s passionate volunteers and the skillful, dedicated staff. He has especially enjoyed mentoring and learning from so many bright interns at the beginning of their careers. The Civic has provided countless opportunities for him to grow as an artist, exploring new ideas, technologies, and aesthetics, and he looks forward to future wonder and discovery with the vibrant Civic community.

Christopher Lewis (Properties Master) Christopher is a graduate of Georgia Southern University with a B.A. in Fine Arts. He joined the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre staff in 2008 as a scenic carpenter. In May of 2023, he became the Resident Properties Master. Some of his favorite Civic productions are Jekyll & Hyde, The Who’s Tommy, The Borrowers, Once on this Island, Xanadu, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Christopher’s hobbies include building prop replicas, designing and constructing puppets, blacksmithing, and playing tabletop games.

Production Team and Crew Angela Mammel (Scenic Artist) Angela is thrilled to be working backstage at the Civic for this production! They hold a B.A. in Theatre from Kalamazoo College and currently work as a scenic design intern with the Civic, where they have designed shows such as last season’s Penguin Project production of Rainbow Fish. Many thanks, as always, to their wonderful and supportive family. They hope you enjoy the show!

Delaney McKenzie (Lighting Designer) Delaney joined the Civic staff in 2018 as the Master Electrician and became the Resident Lighting and Sound Designer in 2020. She earned her BS in Theater: Design and Technology at Northwest Missouri State University and a MFA in Theater at Southern Illinois University where she specialized in Lighting Design.

She has worked with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, Endstation Theater Company, McLeod Summer Playhouse, and as Lead Lighting Technician at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Delaney has a passion for Jesus, music, and the arts, spending much of her time outside of the Civic dedicated to worship and creating beautiful things.

She is a painter and a prolific fiber artist, often seen with a set of needles or crochet hook between meetings or backstage during performances.

Jacob Miller (Scenic Carpenter) Jacob graduated Grand Valley State University in 2020, earning his BA in Theatre and History and a minor in Music. He has worked at the Croswell Opera House, and the theatres at both Grandville and Vicksburg High School.

In 2021, he made his Civic debut in The Tempest and worked as a Teaching Artist. In his free time Jacob still loves to act, traveling between Three Rivers and Grand Rapids for various projects.

Phillip A. Miller (Technical Director) Phillip has worked on every production we have produced since he joined the Civic staff in 2000. Prior to his arrival at the Civic, Phillip served as the Assistant Technical Director at the Barn Theatre and as a draftsman for the Children’s Theatre Company and School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Additionally, Phillip was the Technical Assistant at Western Michigan University, while earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Design and Technical Production.

Alan Moerdyk (Spot Operator) Alan is a repeat offender at follow spot and, for the Civic’s mainstage, has previously spotted for Elf, the Musical, and for Xanadu. No, he is not afraid of the climb to the follow spot booth.

Justin Muse (Scenic Artist) Justin is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a BFA in Theater Design and Production. He is excited to be joining the Civic team as an intern for the 2022-23 season. Past designs include Radium Girls, Bare: A pop Opera, and Don Pasquale.

Production Team and Crew Jacob Myny (Sound Designer) Jacob is excited for his very first season with the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre!

Jacob is the resident sound designer here and comes from South Haven, MI. Jacob earned his BFA degree from Western Michigan University Theatre Department. He has traveled around working in New Hampshire, Florida, and Michigan. Some of his favorite previous works include, The Cake (The Naples Players), The Fantastics (Jean s Playhouse), and Much A Do About Nothing (Hope Summer Repertory Theatre). Julie Smith (Dresser) Ever a theatre kid, Julie is thrilled her love for the theatre trickled down to her children. She is loving sharing this experience with her favorite middle child, Aster. Julie’s favorite role was Maggie Jones in 42nd Street, but she dreams of playing Rose in Gypsy (or maybe Mazeppa).

Camille Van Dien (Stitcher) My name is Camille Van Dien, I am the current Costume Design Intern at the Kalamazoo Civic. Before coming to the Civic, I went to college at Grand Valley State University where I studied theatre and got my bachelor’s degree in 2021.

When I am not working with costumes I enjoy being an actor at local theaters in the area and getting together to play board games with friends.
