Is it art?

What is “art?”

Art art art. Do macaroni necklaces count?

If a painting hangs in a closet, and there is nobody around to see it, is it ”art?”

Depends on who you ask.

That’s what everyone says, right? “Art is subjective..”

Well, what the heck does that mean!? Is it or is it not?!

To answer that question we have experts. Bring in the experts! Folks who know the things and have done the reading and talking and all the “art” things. They know what real “art” is.

They would probably tell you, “No, your macaroni necklace is not art,” and recommend some proper sculpture (probably Western) to look at and maybe encourage you to enroll in an “art” class, which they teach and you can’t afford.

“You have potential, but this isn’t art.” They have a word for this and it’s called gatekeeping. We probably can be in agreement that this kind of gatekeeping is common and, to quote my macaroni necklace making cousins, “Icky.”

So… I’d encourage you to step away from that thought and ask this question instead: is there a relationship? If you’re like me, (which I hope in some ways you are, but for most others, please continue being yourself) you believe that art happens in the middle. Where everything happens. It is within relationship that something becomes “art.” The smile your mother gives for each macaroni necklace will be different. Maybe similar, but different. Each a distinct relationship based on it being your 3rd..6th…8th.. macaroni necklace. A different piece of art.

Art inspires a relationship. The relationship between artist and creation, between ideas and culture, between us and time. Between people sharing an experience. For a people whose technological advancements have given us more communicative access than ever before, we really struggle to pick up the phone and call people, don’t we? And before you say it’s just generational, my Great Aunt forgot to invite an entire wing of the family to Christmas because they aren’t on Facebook. The shared experience becomes one shared at a distance. If remembered at all. What if we approached our friendships and families the way we approach a work of art: with care and attention and effort and love and work and openness? And if after, we turn back around and ask if that’s the way we actually approach art. I’ve cried looking at brickwork that was laid well. At trees refracting sunlight, and at children playing dinosaurs in their school library. What if we tried to live in relationship with the world around us at that level more? Where we see all the interconnectedness underneath the layers of paint. Where we look at the gleam in our friend’s eyes and notice, feel, what lives between you, seeing it for what it is: a work of art all its own.

Happy New Year! Thank you for joining us for the 93rd season of the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre! It has been a bit of a rough start to this new year.

However, here we are--opening another show at the Civic. The opening of ‘Art’ marks the first production in the Carter Studio since February, 2020 – 705 days! Of course, the space has been used a number of times over the past two years, primarily to showcase the talents of our Academy of Theatre Arts students. Despite the many challenges, the Civic halls are bursting with activity, as volunteers rehearse for five productions at once; our creative teams are designing three additional productions and students of all ages are participating in over a dozen classes in our Academy of Theatre Arts. This is a testament to our dedicated staff and volunteers, who continue to give their all to deliver the entertainment and educational experiences we enjoy at the Civic. Thank you to all of you who were able to contribute to our Annual Appeal. I am overwhelmed by your generosity and continued support. Thank you for being here, for without you, none of this would be possible.

MEET THE CAST Ellen Bennett (Serge) Making her Civic debut, Ellen is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. She has appeared in Wit with Great Escape Theatre Company (Dr. Vivian Bearing) and has directed two shorts at Queer Theatre Kalamazoo. Her favorite role to date is Madame Arcati in Thornapple Player's production of Blithe Spirit. Ellen has also appeared as Hilary in Sex Please, We're Sixty for Skits and Giggles Productions and as Ada in QTK's production of "Days Are Shorter."

In her free time, she enjoys writing (she is the author of The Pagodaville Series), reading, hiking, motorcycling, and anything outdoors in good weather.

Jake Burrell he/him (Yvan) is proud to be making his debut with the Kalamazoo Civic in the role of Yvan. He is currently studying Cisco Networking at KVCC. His pronouns are He/Him. His favorite role to date was as Gus in Anything to Give, Center Stage Theatre's submission to the Theatre Kalamazoo New PlayFest 2020. He was born in Kalamazoo and has lived there most of his life. Some past credits include Prince/Wolf in Snow White and Rose Red (All Ears Theatre (2019)), Mitchell in Of Masquerade and Rhymes (Queer Theatre Kalamazoo (2019)), Officer Slager in A Ligature for Black THE KALAMAZOO CIVIC THEATRE

Bodies (Face Off Theatre Company (2019)), Poverty Gentleman #2, Catherine's Husband and The Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol (Paw Paw Village Players (2019)), Announcer in Some DIS-Enchanted Evening (Center Stage Theatre (2020), Dad #1 in Before the Shooting (Queer Theatre Kalamazoo (2020)). Jake was inspired to start acting and auditioning after hearing an inspiration quote by Steve Harvey.

He said, “If you want to be successful, you have to jump, there’s no way around it. When you jump, I can assure you that your parachute will not open right away.

But if you do not jump, your parachute will never open. If you’re safe, you’ll never soar!”

RJ Soule (Marc) Originally from Jackson, Michigan, R.J. has lived in Kalamazoo since 1987 and has been involved in many shows, onstage and behind the scenes, at the Civic. You may have recently seen him in the Civic's productions of War Paint, Hello, Dolly, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!. His favorite role he's ever performed was Henry Edsel Ford in Romance Guaranteed. Besides theatre, in his free time R.J. enjoys mountain hiking and photography. "During my time off during the height of the pandemic, I created a full

MEET THE CAST length play called THE EPISODIC LIFE, which has received wonderful feedback during its years of workshopping. It will have fully realized production in Southwest Michigan in June 2022."

MEET THE PRODUCTION TEAM AND CREW Stacy Bartell (Properties Master) joined the Civic staff in 2005 and was named Properties Master in 2008. After earning her Bachelor's Degree in Technical Theatre from Lehigh University, she served as the Technical Director for the Shadowland Theatre in Ellenville, New York, as well as Scenic Carpenter for Production Resource Group in New Windsor, New York.

Stacy has created stunning and imaginative props for many Civic productions. Some of her favorite builds include: Smaug the Dragon for The Hobbit, the school desks for The Hundred Dresses and Chip's cart for Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr. Ron Dundon (Stage Manager/Playback Operator) began theatre work in Kalamazoo in the Kalamazoo Junior Civic during his school years. A lifetime later, following retirement, he returned to The Civic in 2011. Since then, he has appeared in more than a dozen productions including Arsenic and Old Lace (Dr. Einstein, 2014), Of Mice and Men (Candy, 2016), To Kill a Mockingbird (Bob Ewell, 2017), and The Good Doctor (Writer, 2018). He has also appeared in Farmers Alley Theatre, Arbez Drama Projects of Toronto, THE KALAMAZOO CIVIC THEATRE

Skits and Giggles Productions, and in the film, An English Country Wedding, from Chuck Bentley Productions. Most recently, Ron appeared in this year's Civic production of Almost, Maine (East, Lendell, Dave). Outside of the theatre, Ron lives with his adorable wife, Dixie Edwards, and their equally adorable cat, Ernie. He also enjoys all things nature - travelling and walking it and sharing it with Dixie. "The Civic is a great place to enjoy retirement...I sure am!"

Elaine Kauffman (Costume Designer) first joined the Civic staff in 1998 as our Costume Designer. She left to create her own custom clothing design business, Elaine K Designs, which she has run for the past 18 years.

She returned to the Civic as Costume Designer in 2018. She graduated from WMU with a degree in Fashion Design and has over 25 years of professional costume design working at almost every theatre in the Kalamazoo area including the Barn Theatre, 3D Touring Productions, WMU Dance Dept., WMU Opera, Kalamazoo College Theatre Dept., Farmers Alley Theatre and many other freelance costume design projects. One of her favorite

MEET THE PRODUCTION TEAM AND CREW costuming experiences was creating the "creature costume" for a horror movie filmed in Kalamazoo. Outside of the theatre, Elaine enjoys the art of cheese making!

Connar Klock he/they (Director) is a queer, Michigan based, director and producer interested in analyzing the “Flyover Country” attitude, coastal elite fetishization of rural trauma and sensibilities, and how they aid in the erasure of marginalized voices in the Midwest. Most of Connar’s work puts new plays at the center, including serving as the Festival Coordinator for Activate Midwest: A New Play Festival twice, and returning in subsequent years to direct and serve on play reading committees. In eleven years of theatre involvement, Connar has worked on over 50 shows, directed for 8 companies and 11 new play festivals, and is still as sentimental as day one. They hold a BFA in Theatre Performance (‘18) from Western Michigan University and currently serve as the Managing Artistic Director of Queer Theatre Kalamazoo. They are the first of 5 children to their mother, who is the first of 5 to her mother, who is the first of 8 to her mother, all raised THE KALAMAZOO CIVIC THEATRE

up and down along the coast of Lake Michigan. They carry that with them.

Laurie Lethiot (A1 Operator) has been a part of many production crews and can often be found behind the Civic's Sound Board, where she has been the Sound Board Operator on Sister Act, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, Good People, White Christmas, and Annie.

Nathan Lethiot (Light Board Operator) has been a part of the Civic family since he began with the Civic Youth Theatre in 2007. He has also been involved in several of our recent holiday musicals. Some of his favorite Civic experiences were with It’s A Wonderful Life, the Musical, How I Became a Pirate, Shrek: The Musical, Peter Pan, and Mary Poppins.

Delaney McKenzie (Lighting and Sound Designer) joined the Civic staff in 2018 as the Master Electrician and became the Resident Lighting and Sound Designer in 2020. She earned her BS in Theater: Design and

MEET THE PRODUCTION TEAM AND CREW Technology at Northwest Missouri State University and a MFA in Theater at Southern Illinois University where she specialized in Lighting Design. She has worked with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, Endstation Theater Company, McLeod Summer Playhouse, and two years as the Lead Lighting Technician at Interlochen. Delaney had the pleasure of being Assistant Lighting Designer and Programmer for James Moody on Tartuffe at Southern Illinois University in 2016.

Mr. Moody is the author of 'Concert Lighting: Techniques, Art, and Business', and an alumnus of SIU. Outside of the theatre, Delaney is a painter in her spare time, spending hours in her studio creating abstract art while listening to show tunes or Top Gear episodes.

She also enjoys making jewelry (evolved from her time making costuming chainmail) and is learning to play guitar.

Phillip A. Miller (Technical Director) has worked on every production we have produced since he joined the Civic staff in 2000. Prior to his arrival at the Civic, Phillip served as the Assistant Technical Director at the

Barn Theatre and as a draftsman for the Children's Theatre Company and School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Phillip served as the Technical Assistant at Western Michigan University, while earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Design and Technical Production.

Ophelia Rose she/they (Assistant Stage Manager/Floor Manager) has been involved with the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre since she was 13, which was over 5 years ago. She has taken on many roles over the years, her favorite being Rosalind in As You Like It, during the summer of 2019. Another honorable mention being Lucy the dog in The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane in 2018, in which they were nominated for an award for the volunteer celebration that same year. When they aren’t performing, Ophelia can be found cosplaying and actively trying to work on their fashion and makeup skills or running rampant around her house playing with her 3 cats and dog. Ophelia would like to give special thanks to their dearest friend, Marshall Vernari, whom they wouldn’t have met without their involvement in theatre.

MEET THE PRODUCTION TEAM AND CREW Robert Salerno (Sound Designer) recently moved to Kalamazoo from New York, to join the Civic staff as our Sound Design Intern. He received his Bachelor of Science in Entertainment Production from Macaulay Honors College at Baruch College. Robert s background in sound design includes productions of The Pretty Pretty, The Moors, M. Butterfly, Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Gloria and Robin Hood.

Kira Sheffer (Production Stage Manager/Assistant Stage Manager/Floor Manager ) is excited to join the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre team as Production Stage Manager. Kira has been doing theatre since she was in fifth grade and became interested in technical theatre while attending Alma College. A native Michigander, she travelled for work following graduation, serving as stage manager at The Rose Theatre in Omaha, NE and The Appalachian Center for the Arts in Pikeville, KY. She is happy to be settled in Michigan again and is looking forward to exploring the Kalamazoo community! In her free time, Kira enjoys embroidery and playing with her cats.
