DIRECTORS' NOTES There's Something About You Thirty-three years after Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler made Warner Brothers movie magic and fourteen years before 42nd Street arrived on Broadway, Dames At Sea made its debut.
Tony Humrichouser Director
In 1966, Dames at Sea premiered at the first Off-Off-Broadway Theatre, The Cafe Cino. Written by George Haimsohn, Robin Miller, and Tim Wise, the show featured an up-and-coming triple threat - a 16-year-old named Bernadette Peters. This Musical Valentine to the precode Warner Brothers musicals of the 1930's enchanted audiences - eventually transferring to Bouwerie Lane Theatre then the larger Theater de Lys (now the Lucille Lortel Theatre) for a combined 723 performances.
The musical received rave reviews and was selected as "Musical of the Year" by Time, Newsweek, and received the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical. First staged during the Vietnam War era, this lovely musical about a girl from Utah coming to the big city to make her mark on Broadway seems more relevant than ever. Much like the precode Busby Berkley movie musicals, it celebrates - Dames at Sea satirically uses song and dance and takes aim at the blind optimism that comes from the denial of reality - all through song and dance. There is something special about Dames and Sea. It shows us that even during the most challenging of times - It's essential to celebrate life, love, humor, and the artist's indomitable spirit. We had a wonderful time creating this production at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre. We hope you enjoy it! Happy New Year! Thank you for joining us for the 93rd season of the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre! It has been a bit of a rough start to this new year. However, after a slight delay, here we are--opening another show at the Civic. The opening of Dames at Sea marks the first production in the Parish Theatre since March, 2020. Of course, the space has been used a number of times over the past two years, primarily to showcase the talents of our Academy of Theatre Arts students, and members of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kalamazoo, who spent their summer with us last year. And despite the many challenges, the Civic halls are bursting with activity, as volunteers rehearse for five productions; creative teams are designing the rest of the season and students of all ages are participating in over a dozen classes in our Academy of Theatre Arts. This is a testament to our dedicated staff and volunteers, who continue to give their all to deliver the entertainment and educational experiences we enjoy at the Civic. Thank you those who were able to contribute to our Annual Appeal. I am overwhelmed by your generosity and continued support. And thank you to you, for being here, for without you, none of this would be possible.
