Director’s Note
“What are The 39 Steps?” is the question driving this play.
Indeed, how does one begin to describe this play we call The 39 Steps? (cue thunder). It is so many things--an adaptation of both a film and a novel, an action caper, a noir-ish thriller, a comedy, a love story, an elaborate game; the list goes on and on. In his dedication to the 1915 novel, writer John Buchan called his book a “shocker”, which he described as a “romance where the incidents defy the probabilities, and march just inside the borders of the possible.”
Hitchcock was likewise intrigued by skirting the “borders of the possible.” He eschews plausibility in film, saying filmmakers “should have total freedom to do as we like, just so long as it’s not dull.” Perhaps it is this freedom from the strictures of reality that made his 1935 film version of The 39 Steps a template for many of his subsequent films as well as inspiration for a whole genre of action thrillers we’ve enjoyed for decades. Our production similarly embraces the attempt to stage the impossible.
We imagine this action-thriller story as if it were performed on a vaudeville stage (or music hall as the brits called it) while paying tribute to the Master of Suspense. We mash up filmic storytelling with broad comic theatricality to ask some big questions:
Will our hero survive this ordeal?
Will he find his place in the world?
Will we discover what The 39 Steps really are?
Does it really matter if we do?
We’re glad you found your way here today. We invite you to join us in the music hall, let go of the probabilities of the outside world, and test the boundaries of the possible.
