Meet the Cast
Sarah Aiello (Casey Understudy) has been in many Civic shows since a young age, a few being Beauty and the Beast, War Paint, Madagascar and most recently, Meet Me in St. Louis as Esther Smith. Her favorite role that she’s ever played was Olaf in Disney’s Frozen Jr., even though it never got to run. She is a sophomore at WMU getting her BMA and enjoys being in the group, Gold Company.
Blaze (himself) is thrilled to be making his onstage debut in this production of First Date. His backstage experience includes working as an audition stand-in for the Civic's production of Nuncrackers, and Avenue Q. Blaze enjoys baseball and basketball and soccer and drawing and chocolate and pirates and airplanes and french fries and video games. He wishes to thank August Gallagher, who has had a hand in his career, leading to this role.
Nadya Beyar* (Casey) is making her Civic debut in this production and is currently at Western Michigan University getting a double major in Acting and Dance. She grew up in Budapest, Hungary, but has lived in Kalamazoo for 2 years. Past theatre credits include: The Thanksgiving Play (A Skit Performer, WMU); Crazy for You (Follies Dancer, International Christian School of Budapest); and, her favorite, Little Women, where she played the role of Beth (International Christian School of Budapest). Psalm 86:12. She just wants to say thank you to everyone in this show; this has been such a wonderful experience!
Jordan Bruner (Aaron) (He/Him/His) is a Kalamazoo native currently at Western Michigan University pursuing a Bachelor's in Music Composition. Currently, he is playing Aaron, but you may have seen him in past Civic shows in Newsies, as Jon in Tick...Tick...Boom!, as Thenardier in Les Miserables, or as Lancelot in Spamalot at Portage Northern High School. Jordan has loved doing theatre and music since middle school and is happily continuing his love at the Civic.
Shannon Canuelle (Aaron’s Mother) appeared in our productions of A Christmas Story the Musical and Billy Elliot the Musical. A marketing lead with AXE Prime, Shannon names her favorite role as Bettina Barnes in our 2019 production of Psycho Beach Party “To my wonderful kids, thank you for always supporting me and cheering me on.”
August Ryan Gallagher (Blaze/Stoner Guy) has had the pleasure of being in many roles growing up, from Berger in Hair, to Lane from The Importance of Being Ernest. He attended Colombia College Chicago to study theatre and played Patrick in Zero Positive. He also portrayed the role of Davidson in Mary Stewart. Recently, he was Sonny Malone in the Civic’s production of Xanadu in spring of 2022.
Vincent Giannecchini (He/Him/His) (Gabe) made his Civic onstage debut in our 94th season opener, Disney’s Newsies. Past theatre credits include You Can’t Take It With You (Mr. Depinna/Donald), The Importance of Being Ernest (Rev. Canon Chasuble) and Romeo and Juliet (Romeo/Mercutio/Apothecary), all performed at Cornerstone University. Interests other than theatre include history, gaming, and being with friends. “I want to thank my wife, Kayla, for her support and pushing me to continue my passions.”
Danny Maura (Reggie/British Artist/Instagram) (he/him/his) is a sophomore at Western Michigan University studying Choral Music Education. He is a part of University Chorale and is the President of the WMU Broncords, but when he isn’t busy doing one of those two things, he loves to do theater. This is his second time being a part of a production at the Civic, his first of which being when he played the role of The Captain in Dames at Sea last year. First Date will be his tenth overall production, and he couldn't be happier to be back performing at the Civic again. He hopes you enjoy the show!

Brendan McMullin* (Aaron Understudy)
(He/They) is currently studying music education at Western Michigan University. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, he has lived in Kalamazoo for a year. Other theatre credits include Marius Pontmercy in Les Miserables, Crutchie in Newsies, Pinball Wizard in Tommy, and his most favorite, Evan Goldman in 13: The Musical, performed at the Cohasset Dramatic Club in Massachusetts. In his free time, Brendan enjoys soccer, music, and Star Wars.
Chloe Mae Page (Lauren/Grandma
Ida/Google/Megaphone #2) has been involved in the Kalamazoo theatre community since 2013. Chloe Mae made her Civic stage debut in our production of Seussical Jr. as Gertrude McFuzz and she was most recently seen as Trixie the Usherette in Kellogg Community College’s production of The Rocky Horror Show. When not working on theatrical productions, she takes on her most favorite role as a dance instructor at Mosaic Dance Center. In her limited free time, Chloe Mae enjoys spending time with her friends and family, frequenting karaoke nights, and playing with her puppy, Persephone.
Joey Rankin* (She/Her/Hers) (Allison) is a Sophomore Musical Theatre Major at Western Michigan University and is thrilled to be a part of her first show with The Civic’s production of First Date Joey has been on stage all her life Some of her past roles include Chava in Fiddler on the Roof, a Player in Pippin, Cinderella in Into the Woods, and many others She is so happy to have had the opportunity to work with this amazing cast and crew and loves the performance they all crafted together
Todd Spratt (Waiter) is a lifelong resident in the Kalamazoo area and is a staff pharmacist with Bronson Health Systems. He is thrilled to be participating in First Date. He has performed a variety of roles at the Civic ranging from Billy Elliot’s father to a dancing waiter in Hello, Dolly! He’d like to give a special thanks to the Civic for allowing him these wonderful opportunities and to his lovely wife for her patience and support in allowing him to pursue his passion for theater

Bada Bing - It's Spring: Grades Preschool - 1
Monday thru Friday, 8:45am - 3:45pm
Designed to help your youngest thespians bloom with confidence! This camp is designed with young learners in mind and incorporates singing, dancing, acting and crafting in rotating format with fun transitions and time to explore new ideas led by teaching artists who understand the needs of younger learners.
Bugz: Grades 2 - 3
Monday thru Friday, 9:00am - 4:00pm
Campers will be buzzing about as they put their acting, singing, and dancing skills to work, learning and performing the Musical Production, Bugz, for friends and families in just one week! Working together to save the picnic is the theme of the show and of camp as well -- plenty of time is included for games and crafts and getting to know our new friends.
Gotta Be Jazz: Grades 4 - 9
Monday thru Friday 9:15am - 4:15pm
Camp week will be jam packed as participants explore jazz history, discover fun facts, and learn to sing and dance to the sounds of Ragtime, Blues, Swing, Big Band, and more. Want to know why jazz performers had interesting names like "Dizzy," "Lady Day," and "Yardbird?"

Meet the Production Team and Crew
Mike Artis (Rehearsal Assistant Stage Manager)
Prior to becoming the Director of Volunteers for the Civic, Mike was the Production Stage Manager joining the Civic staff in 2005. For years before that Mike was a volunteer that spent much of his spare time here in and crewing shows. In addition to working behind the scenes on more shows than you could count, he has also appeared on stage in State Fair, Jesus Christ Superstar, and The Full Monty (his favorite). Some of Mike s favorite shows that he has stage managed are Ragtime, Avenue Q, Anything Goes, 33 Variations, Doubt and Les Miserables.
Stacy Bartell (Properties Master) joined the Civic staff in 2005 and was named Properties Master in 2008. After earning her Bachelor's Degree in Technical Theatre from Lehigh University, she served as the Technical Director for the Shadowland Theatre in Ellenville, New York as well as Scenic Carpenter for Production Resource Group in New Windsor, New York. Stacy has created stunning and imaginative props for many Civic productions. Some of her favorite builds include: Smaug the Dragon for The Hobbit, the school desks for The Hundred Dresses and Chip's cart for Disney's Beauty and the Beast JR.
Ashley Beach* (she/her/hers) (Follow Spot Operator) is making her Civic debut backstage as a follow spot operator. Originally from Gobles, Michigan, she has lived in Kalamazoo for 16 years with her husband, Chris, and their child, Fox, who is 4 years old. Interests other than theatre include photography, writing, crafting, and hiking.
Ryan Burke (Scenic Carpenter) has worked with the Croswell Opera House, the Goodman Theatre, and the Tibbits Opera House. Ryan is a graduate of Siena Heights University, where he received his BA in Theatre and Speech Communications.
McKenna Burlingham (A1 Operator) (she/her/hers) is pursuing an associate’s degree at KVCC in illustration. Her favorite role she has ever performed was Ida in Honk! at Homeschool Performing Arts. Other Civic shows she’s been involved in are Rock of Ages (Sound Board Operator), Billy Elliot (Sound Board Operator), and The Little Mermaid (Seagull/Crab). “Thank you to my family and friends for all the support over the years! Without the most important people in my life, I wouldn’t be able to do what I love! I also want to thank Mrs. Pletcher at Homeschool Performing Arts for always being an inspiration to keep pursuing theatre!”
Emma Fergusson (she/her/hers) (Follow Spot Operator) is a follow spot operator. She is a recent college graduate and currently works as a PostBaccalaureate Fellow at Kalamazoo College. She previously performed in As You Like It at the Civic, and most recently as Mary in Pride and Prejudice.
Val Glasscock (Food Stylist) is enjoying working behind the scenes on her 8th show here at the Civic. Other notable shows Val has worked on include Tick Tick Boom!, Billy Elliot, and Ripcord.
Lori Hatfield (Music Director) A lifetime resident of Kalamazoo, Lori has provided musical direction for many local and regional theatres. Show highlights include Dames at Sea, Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein, Avenue Q, Peter and the Starcatcher, The Toxic Avenger (Farmers Alley Theatre), Rocky Horror Show, Loserville, Xanadu (The Civic and Kellogg Community College), and Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Whole Art Theatre).
Lori has also toured with rock tribute bands throughout the Midwest. She has also taught for Education for the Arts in the Kalamazoo area. She holds an M.A. from National University and currently is a professor of Communications at Glen Oaks College.
Meet the Production Team and Crew
Kaia Jordan (Light Board Operator) is a recent high school graduate who has enjoyed the theatre for over 10 years now. Other interests include music, dancing, baking, and video games. She has been on stage in shows such as Annie Get Your Gun, Shrek the Musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and most recently, Xanadu, which she lists as her favorite she’s done. She also worked behind the scenes in several shows including The 1940s Radio Hour, Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, and last year’s Penguin Project production of Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.
David Kyhn (Scenic Designer, Charge Painter)
The 2022-2023 season marks David's twenty-third season as the Kalamazoo Civic's resident scenic designer. That means he has personally designed over one hundred sets since he first joined the Civic in the summer of 2000. In that time he has also had the pleasure of mentoring many young artists just starting their careers through the Civic's vibrant internship program. David lives with his family in downtown Kalamazoo; you may chance to meet them at a volunteer paint call as they frequently come down to lend a hand. Christopher Lewis (Scenic Carpenter) moved to Kalamazoo from Georgia in 2008. A graduate of Georgia Southern University with a BA in Fine Arts, Christopher has worked for the Averitt Center for the Arts. His favorite Civic productions include Cyrano, Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical and Legally Blonde, the Musical. In his free time, Christopher enjoys making props, woodworking, building puppets and working on "mad scientist" projects.
Angela Mammel (Scenic Artist) is a recent graduate of Kalamazoo College with a B.A. in Theatre Arts. They have assisted in the scenic design process for numerous productions over the course of their college career, most notably designing the scenery and projections for an original one-person show entitled "Unzipped" as their senior thesis project, as well as designing the scenery for productions of "Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet and Silent Sky," and the projections for shows such as "Water by the Spoonful." In their free time, they enjoy playing guitar and piano, crocheting, and spending time with their dog, Pandora.
Jacob Miller (Scenic Carpenter) graduated Grand Valley State University in 2020, earning his BA in Theatre and History and a minor in Music. He has worked at the Croswell Opera House, and the theatres at both Grandville and Vicksburg High School. In 2021, he made his Civic debut in The Tempest and worked as a Teaching Artist. In his free time Jacob still loves to act, traveling between Three Rivers and Grand Rapids for various projects.
Phillip A. Miller (Technical Director) has worked on every production we have produced since he joined the Civic staff in 2000. Prior to his arrival at the Civic, Phillip served as the Assistant Technical Director at the Barn Theatre and as a draftsman for the Children's Theatre Company and School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Additionally, Phillip was the Technical Assistant at Western Michigan University, while earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Design and Technical Production.
Meet the Production Team and Crew
Alan Moerdyk (Follow Spot Operator) is a retired software engineer who made his Civic debut in the Senior Class production of The Pirates of Penzance: In Concert and has appeared in Sounds of the 60's, Billy Elliot the Musical and The Civic in Song: 1929-2018. He recently worked on the crew for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and worked on the crew for Rock of Ages. Alan has also done Lighting and Scenic Design as well as performed for several theatres in Arizona.
Justin Muse (Scenic Designer, Charge Painter) is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a BFA in Theater Design and Production. He is excited to be joining the Civic team as an intern for the 2022-23 season. Past designs include Radium Girls, Bare: A pop Opera, and Don Pasquale
Ian Myner* (He/Him/His) (A2 Operator) is currently a senior at Plainwell high school and is making his Civic debut in this production! His favorite production he’s done was Madagascar the Musical. Interests other than theater include working on cars, building computers, photography and building models.
Jaycee Myner (Assistant Stage Manager) is a mom to six and mimi to six! In her free time, she loves to paint and spend time with her family. In fact, Jaycee started volunteering at the Civic in part because of her daughter Chloe’s involvement. Her two favorite shows she’s been part of are her first show at the Civic, Elf the Musical (2019), as a floor crew member, and being on stage for the first time in years as Richard Petty/Grand/Flossy for Skits and Giggles traveling troupe.
Jacob Myny (Sound Designer) is excited for his very first season with the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre! Jacob is the resident sound designer here and comes from South Haven, MI. Jacob earned his BFA degree from Western Michigan University Theatre Department. He has traveled around working in New Hampshire, Florida, and Michigan. Some of his favorite previous works include, The Cake (The Naples Players), The Fantastics (Jean s Playhouse), and Much A Do About Nothing (Hope Summer Repertory Theatre). Lisa Newman (Follow Spot Operator) is a proud theatre mom who has lived in Kalamazoo her whole life. Her first show she was a part of at the Civic was Meet Me in St. Louis, where she was also a follow spot operator. Her daughter, Izzy, and her husband, Chris, have also been involved in shows with her at the Civic as well. “Thanks for the encouragement, Chris, and for promising to drive me to the shows if the roads get too wintery.”
RJ Soule (Follow Spot Operator) has lived in Kalamazoo since 1987, though he had a 2-year hiatus in Houston. He has been involved in several shows at the Civic, both onstage and off, but his favorite show he’s done at the Civic was one of his own pieces, The Episodic Life, performed at the Parish Theatre last year. When not at the theatre, RJ enjoys mountain hiking.
George Townsend (Lighting Designer) is a graduate of Adrian College in Michigan with a Bachelor's in Theatre. Some notable appearances include lighting musicals such as A New Brain and Western Civilization: Abridged as well as acting in Tartuffe and Silent Sky.
Meet the Production Team and Crew
Laura VanOrman (Dresser) first became involved with the Civic as a parent volunteer. From there she found her love for the backstage as a dresser. In the 2019-2020 season, she finally got her chance to be in front of the lights in World Goes ‘Round and Romance Guaranteed. She is excited to get back to doing what makes her happy again! “Thank you to my family for support me! LYTM!”
Phillip VanOrman (Playback Operator) has been told that he looks like he should be dating a supermodel, until he starts talking. Despite this, he is #husbandmaterial and his talents include cooking, cleaning, fish, and reptile husbandry, and pretending like he knows how to roller skate. Philip's claim to Kalamazoo Civic stardom is his ability to bounce a curtain that bodily lifts him two and a half feet off the ground.
Jan Watson (Stage Manager) (She/Her/Hers) has been a volunteer at the Civic since 2010. She can usually be found behind the scenes and has enjoyed learning all the technical roles. Favorites include Assistant Stage Manager for Rock of Ages and Tenderly; Stage Manager for Steel Magnolias, Sounds of the 60’s; and crew for Tommy, SideShow and Newsies. She has been a member of our Play Selection Committee and the recently formed Volunteer Advocacy Committee, as well as hospitality and ushering duties. She enjoys working in the Education and Outreach department with youth and helping with camps/classes with AnnMarie Miller. Jan has lived in Kalamazoo for many years but is originally from Tennessee. “Glad to be working on First Date with all these talented people! Thanks to Denny for letting me play at the Civic, doing what I love!”
Laura Zervic (Director) is thrilled to be making her Kalamazoo Civic Theatre directorial debut with First Date. Laura’s theater experience spans over 35 years, and includes acting, directing, producing, and stage-managing in a variety of productions in Cincinnati, Chicago, and Kalamazoo. Laura’s first production with the Civic was The Affections of May in 2009. More recently, she was in the SCRT’s production of The World Goes Round. Favorite performances include Only Rose, Noises Off, Lend Me a Tenor, and Company. Laura devotes much of her time to her community, where she is a champion of the arts, creating opportunities for students, and serves on the Gull Lake Community Schools Board of Education. Laura enjoyed a twenty-year career as an advertising and promotions lawyer before joining the Civic as its Executive Director.
