Research Agenda and Process Overview Designing creation to its own functionality requires specific explanation and understanding of it mechanism. There are various techniques in furniture designing which differs each furniture from one another as they have its very own methods of creation, understating and its precise calculation is the main majority of success. Pakkeji is a chabudai set with storage capacity for city people with limited space in urban dwellings, the function changes based on the arrangements by users. Pakkeji is supported by trapezium shaped steel for stronger stability. “Design your life to include more money, health, and happiness with less stuff, space and energy.�

The furniture is to represent the city dwellers and is greatly adequate and reciprocal for compact spaces. These days the costs of living just seen to be increasing, making the need for space saving furniture even greater. Influenced by the spare aesthetic of Japan’s minimalist culture, this project unified the traditional setting of chabudai with modern setting to engage different functionality.

What are the importance of space-saving for city dwellers and how to interpret space-saving idea through the furniture?

Research Statement

Significance and Contribution This research presents unification of traditional chabudai and modern setting.

Each modular made of trapezium and rectangular shape. The trapezium provides strong base for each modular to layer on one to another. The structure changes according to the behaviour of user. There is no specific guide to use the furniture as it can closely adapt to user’s need, therefore all surfaces of each modular can be used to achieve the transformation of furniture.

The purpose of this project is to provide multifunctional space-saving furniture in a limited space by adapting user’s need with different arrangements of the modular.

Interaction within allows to determine the position of each modular engaging different functions and aspect.

Methodologies 1. Design individual units with mobility and form a multifunctional shelves and storage system.

2. Develop a rigid support base to carry out various functions.

3. Understanding the arrangements of the modular in different way according to the user’s behaviour.

4. Experience different functionality as the changes of Pakkeji in different aspect by adjusting the length of the different structure’s point.

Design Proposal We proposed the design of Pakkeji as a space-saving furniture that transforms to engage different functionality by changes of the modular with method of flipping and stacking.

The element is designed with 4 vertex geometric shapes such as trapezium, rectangle, and square. The modular is supported by a rigid structure of trapezium, where as it is also function as a tenon to mortise of the rectangle surface, increasing the stability when the modular are being stacked up high.

The furniture includes 4 rectangle modular and 1 square module that can be freely arranged. These modular can functions as its origin inspiration, chabudai set, both with or without zaisu chair. Besides, it can also be used separately as laptop table for bed, or layout into a small working space.

Key technological outcomes of proposal 1.

The creation of the elements and the construction of connection through 12mm mdf board with designed mortise and tenon joints have to be accurate and moderate.

The connectivity of the structure to the steel base has to be precise, as it has to be straight to higher layers’ structure so each layer can be flat and stable.

3.

The counter weight has to be properly created according to the weight and sizes so the structure can be easily adjustable and avoid collapse or breakage.

This research is based on the understanding of Japanese minimalism by the mechanism and methods of space-saving furniture.

Compact furniture shows the various processes of folding, unfolding, compressing, expanding, rotating, etc.

This project refers to As If From Nowhere

by Orla Reynolds as this project is an independently functioning bookcase which houses four dining chairs and two tables that when placed together form a dining table. It is intended for small living spaces or for those who wish to cater to the unexpected guest.

Prototyping and Testing

Prototyping and testing The structure of the elements are the most successful pieces, they have been combined with 3 level- elements like with 6 steel cylinder support higher with 6 pieces of medium-density fibreboard (MDF) board allow them to move spontaneously and become another function.

Different types of steel u-shape-like elements have been tested out to make sure materials assembled together make the overall structural look attractive. 3 levels-like shaped structure that torch the steel, layzer cut the plywood and form into an element when combine 3 level high

The multifunction within each element is the most particular; the high demanding user looking to reduce troubles to buy more furniture and is quite intensive comparing using other materials.

Fabrication Techniques

Fabrication Techniques a. Element testing Experimenting and testing with the furniture by using recycle items, by seat on the furniture to know whether it can support human weight.

b. Fixings and bracing Using holes on the board to interlocking the furniture to make it more stable. It’s also can make it separate and change to cushion to user seat.

c. Installation The furniture suitable for lounge area, because it can be separate into 3 parts to seat, make as table, seat of 4 . It can be use as multifunctional object for user to use.

d. Overall form models

The furniture suitable for lounge area.

Consumer can separate the furniture and use as they wanted. It can be use in many ways. It’s also can be use as bookshelf when it’s not in use.

Control System

Control Systems Several control measures have to be taken due to the stability of the furniture, connecting up the board and the steel to make it stable way in order to avoid it collapsing.

c. Location

The holes that want to be connected to the steel element have to be strong to prevent collapsing and unstable. The steel is the main part of whole furniture so it has to connect and stable.

d. Counter Weight

a. Network and structure The network of the structure that has combined with numerous elements has to be well made to prevent the joints and elements from collapsing during interaction. Designing it with better materials such as MDF or a stronger wood such as plywood or hardwood to prevent breaking down

b. Fixings and bracing Well-designed joints with nuts and bolts will be strong enough to hold the elements together to prevent the structure from falling apart.

There can be in place in a suitable lounge so user may interact with the furniture.

The steel has to be strong enough to support the whole elements.

Counter weight is the unstable part due to the use of consumers and the calculation of weight to prevent collapsing. Counter weights, as concrete blocks have to be fixated and installed on the floor, as the steel will be connect on it so consumers can interact with them, as they are adjustable on height as transformation occurs.

Interaction The structure is made up of square, rectangle and trapezium. It is a multifunctional furniture, the function will change when layout different.

Dissemination and Future Work This furniture will be a good example in multi-functional combine with traditional Japanese furniture. I would like to go on with further experiment on this project as it can be discovering in many direction.
