“Music is liquid architecture; architecture is frozen music.” - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Hello, my name is Kaylin Berendzen. I am currently a 5th year student at Kansas State University, studying to obtain a Master’s Degree from the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design. To me, the meaning of architecture is creating spaces that convey a feeling while serving their intended fuction. In coming from a musical background, I have found that architecture and music have a strong correlation through the orchestration of feelings, composition of patterns and systems, and its universality amongst all walks of life. I find beauty in both music and architecture and can only hope that I am able to influence others through design that can be enjoyed and functional in all aspects.

The Site:
The current Ag Press building sits on a 4 acre site that acts as a buffer between a busy boulevard and the quaint, residential neighborhoods of Manhattan, Kansas. This site offers an opportune location for all visitors who are looking for a short or long term stay in Manhattan, Kansas. The main building, which is currently the Ag Press, will contain amenities, such as, a 3 level bar, a restaurant, a pool, Manhachet ax throwing, and workout rooms. The U-shaped configuration surrounding the existing building contains apartments of varying arrangements.
Existing: Loading Dock New: Indoor Pool
Inverted Truss Shaping Views
The Intention:
The overarching intention behind the U-shaped addition, surrounding the existing Ag Press, is to protect this new realm from Fort Riley Boulevard. To soften the hard boundaries of the building footprint, nature has been embedded wherever possible to allow a feeling of immersion while meandering through various spaces. There are sunken planters in the roof assemblies of the restaurant and garage to bring natural light and views of vegetation into what would otherwise be dark spaces. Light and vegetation are prominent pieces in this design due to the benefits they provide for wellness of both mind and body. The main walk, located in what was previously the Ag Press structure, reinforces the perception of a light, airy feeling that is experienced outdoors. The glass walls serve as a thin layer between the interior and exterior in conjunction with the varying ceiling heights, which allow views between the levels and to the surrounding environment. Inverted scissor trusses have been incorporated in the new construction to guide these views between the levels. The steel trusses and glass are paired with modular cross laminated timber (CLT) units for the living quarters. The raw and charcoal stained wood creates warm, natural tones that compliment the embedded natural landscaping. The use of CLT is known for its strength and versatility, which makes it the perfect choice for modular units. The CLT can be used for the entirety of the structural system, from the ceilings, to the walls, to the floors. The individual pieces are prefabricated and then assembled on site, creating a quick construction process. These modular apartments will be separated with vegetation spaces with views of plantings and trees that will be added to the existing, large trees that currently flourish on the site.

The Brassy Sax
Completed Fall Semester 2022 Studio Professor: BNIM Architectural Firm Project Type: Theater & Supporting Programs Location: Jazz District | Kansas City, Missouri Duration: 3.5 months
This theater is located on the corner of 18th and Vine Street in the heart of the Jazz District of Kansas City, Missouri. It is evident when visiting this location that jazz is still highly celebrated, but some deterioration of the once livley community occured in the 1950’s. This design is inspired through its fluid form, brassy materiality, and intricate nuances by the prominent instrument in jazz music, the saxophone. This 10,472 sf venue includes the following: 160 seat indoor theater, outdoor theater, leasable space, studio space, rooftop bar, and more.

This design was intended to capture the views of East Harlem from every apartment space. The main views captured are of the trees across 103rd St and between the existing apartments across 1st Avenue on the lower levels, looking down 1st Avenue on the middle levels, and the JFK bridge from the top floors. The fanned out levels that turn at 10 degrees from the 4th floor to the 10th floor, pivoting around the stair core, allow the views to be captured and for each level to have a shared balcony on the backside. On the first and second floor, there is a daycare, gym, and classrooms for public use. The classrooms are intended to provide support for the high rate of teen pregnancy (133/1,000 births) of East Harlem to have motherhood classes, while in a close proximity to a day care and other classes such as mommy and me to prepare them to raise their children. There is also a different ammenity on each residential floor to provide communal spaces for the residents to enjoy. The construction of this structure is precast concrete and a unitized window system to allow for quick construction. Although each individual has a different view of the world, this aparment allows a sense of community, with something for everyone, in the midst of a busy city.

Lakeside Ashland is the second phase proposal for the recently completed drive-in theater and concessions at Riverside Ashland. The site is located near the Columbia Regional Airport in Columbia, Missouri. This phase includes activities, such as volleyball, pickleball, swim-up bar, large tv screen, bar, etc. In phase three, the client is hoping to include a hotel nearby to complete the complex.
Porter, Berendzen & Associates Experience For 3 consecutive summers I worked for Porter, Berendzen & Associates, located in Ashland, Missouri. These summer internships allowed me an oppurtunity to get real work experience in the office and helped me gain a better idea of what to expect from a future career in architecture. I mainly used AutoCAD, Sketchup, Enscape, and some Adobe products during my time there. A few things I was tasked with were measuring existing, printed drawings to convert to AutoCAD drawings, generate Sketchup models to show clients existing versus new design options, create door and window schedules, create elevations based on floor plans, etc. I am very thankful to have developed my skills here and I am excited to further my education and abilities.

Parcel/Edmunds Residence The Parcel/Edmunds Residence is currently under construction just outside of Manhattan, Kansas. After meeting with the elderly couple, it became clear that they were looking to build a forever home with complete ADA accessibility. The site offers beautiful views of the surrounding hay fields and woods. A main concern for the couple was to have large windows in their bedroom and the living room to look out into the natural landscape. The large, south facing windows in the livingroom are shaded by a covered porch with a wood paneled ceiling and doric columns. This will be the perfect place for the couple to enjoy their retired life together and entertain company.

Wakefield Public Library
The Wakefield Public Library project is located on a site with a 1938 limestone structure as the existing portion and an addition to the south end. The purpose of the addition is to create space for the growing number of books as well as tables and lounging areas for children to enjoy while reading. In helping with this construction document set, I was able expand my knowledge on door and window detail. I found drawing these details to be very helpful in understanding the ways in which windows and doors are assembled.

BBN Architects Inc. Experience In my time working for BBN, I have gained a better understanding of drawing details, Photoshop shortcuts, the importance of sketching, a system of storing/saving previous projects and drawings, marketing tactics, and some had some experience in meeting with clients. I feel as though this oppurtunity has been beneficial in showing me the way in which Revit is utilized in the office and how to work with a large group of people. My Revit, Adobe, and Enscape skills have improved in working or BBN. I felt as though I was able to work on a range of projects at varying stages, from sketches to construction documents to renderings.

The Italian Experience The Kansas State in Italy program was one of the best experiences I have had. This trip allowed me to see works that some only dream of. It is true the pictures cannot do these historic sites justice. While studying aboard, I was able to study under professors from K-State, as well as Italian natives. There was a mix of general architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, and urban planning students all included in our group of approximately 50 students. We traveled to a new city every Friday and took 3 week-long trips. I was able to see and expereience some of the most groundbreaking architecural designs in history while learning more about the Italian culture. On my own time, I was also able to visit Munich, Germany; Houndrich, Switzerland; Athens, Santorini, and Crete, Greece. I feel as though we cannot truly understand how to design space unless we first experience its atmosphere for ourselves. Then, and only then, will we have the knowledge to shape intentional spaces. Studying aboard has made me realized that I want to make traveling a priority going foward. I have included a few sketches and writing excerpts from the journal I kept while aboard.
