to the editor Mother finds joy and purpose in dementia program My 93-year-old mother, Rosaleen, has been attending the Silver Lights Adult Day Program for dementia, since it opened in November of 2022. Throughout our journey through the challenges of this disease, this program has been a godsend. The beautiful facility on St. George Street is like a home and each morning when I drop my mother off, her whole face lights up as she sees her friends.

The incredibly caring staff provide a program that keeps mom mentally and physically active. They quickly identified mom’s love of sports and her competitive nature. She even gives them golf lessons. The kitchen gives her an opportunity to bake and to participate in household activities which she misses now that she is no longer in her own home. From visiting animals, music, exercise, crafts, and puzzles her day is full and rewarding.

Mom still attends the program daily even though she is now in a long-term care facility. It gives joy and purpose to her life each day of the week. My mother has behavioural issues associated with the disease and the Silver Lights staff came to her nursing home and met with the care staff there to offer suggestions to ensure a coordinated approach to the management of these behaviours. Their knowledge has been invaluable, and Lindsay and the Kawartha Lakes are so fortunate to have this program.

Hail, hail, the gang’s all here I enjoyed reminiscing about the 2003 blackout, as I read your recent article about the 20th anniversary of this infamous event (online Advocate). Similarly, the Aug. 3rd hailstorm that hit Lindsay was also no match for the spirit and strength of our community.

As people assessed the damage and the mess left in the wake of the storm, caring community members banded together to help one another. Neighbours reached out to each other with offers of assistance that continued for days. Younger neighbours and children were seen helping older homeowners with cleanup efforts well into the following week. Those with utility trailers or trucks made numerous runs to the landfill after collecting debris from just about every home on the street. For days, there was an outpouring of help and support.

This is Lindsay, after all, where lending a hand is just second-nature and requires nothing but kindness and a bit of time. If we have to face the aftereffects of a storm, Lindsay is a good place to be. A kind, supportive, and generous community indeed.

Municipal growth and lamenting media loss My initial reason for writing was to respond to your request regarding Lindsay's growth. I feel astute municipal planning is essential for expansion and municipal governments are renowned for not doing so. May the mayor and council be up to the task.

However, to my secondary and perhaps more important concern. I lament the demise of 70 municipal newspapers across Ontario including Kawartha Lakes This Week. It is tragic that over 600 people will lose their jobs and local news coverage will be in jeopardy.

Digital distribution of news and social media are decimating reliable daily and weekly printed access to local coverage. The Advocate becomes more important to Lindsay residents and beyond. There now is only the Advocate to keep us informed about local news coverage.

I realize that the Advocate devotes itself to excellent monthly in-depth journalism. Is it even possible for a monthly publication to take on this role? Perhaps a monthly summary of the local news would suffice.

Lindsay needs more than expensive houses As a native of Lindsay, 30 years away and returned, I am very happy to see many of the changes we are experiencing. I am concerned though regarding the following: where is the land being allotted for (the growing population); where is a drug and alcohol detox and rehab facility with in-patient and out-patient resources; where is a mental health facility with the same kind of resources; where is a facility for parents with children with special needs; and of course, where is the affordable housing? The problems that require these services are becoming very apparent in Lindsay. It appears that a great deal of land is being allotted to expensive housing. To have a community that cares and serves all its citizens, we need to be concerned with these issues so that we will all benefit from the rapid growth.

Are federal Liberals to blame for Ontario’s healthcare woes?

The question is whether the Conservatives (provincial) should be blamed or should the Liberals (federal) be blamed? Are the provinces getting the required money from the federal government? I do not believe that they are and that our tax dollars are being spent elsewhere, needlessly. It is easy to blame the provincial government without asking why, and what they are experiencing. More research should be done before playing the blame game.

* UPFRONT * Seniors for Climate Action Now (SCAN!) organizes in Kawartha Lakes

Bobcaygeon Music Council begins new concert series

Seniors in Kawartha Lakes are organizing to urge all levels of government to take immediate action to effectively address the climate emergency. There is now a local Kawartha Lakes chapter of Seniors for Climate Action Now! (SCAN!).

SCAN! was formed just three years ago and has grown rapidly with chapters in several cities across Ontario. It has organized webinars, petitions, and rallies, often in coalition with other environment and Indigenous groups, to raise awareness about the cause of the climate crisis and alternatives, and to pressure governments to take the bold action needed.

“This climate crisis is our generation’s legacy, but it doesn’t have to be our grandkids’ future. There are viable alternatives to fossil fuels,” says SCAN! Kawartha member Sherry Hillman. “That’s what motivates us.”

Like any field of discipline, journalism has its jargon. (But not near as much, I dare say, as the military or education.)

We have what we call an “op-ed” page (which you’ll find on page 11, and which simply means opposite the editorial page.) We have decks, which just mean smaller headlines below bigger headlines. And we have cutlines, which are simply the descriptive captions you’ll find under photos in a newspaper or magazine. One of the most important things we have are bylines. As in, such-and-such and article was written by ‘x’ person.

Knowing who has written an article, letter, or column gives the reader a certain degree of assurance. They know there’s a flesh-and-blood person who is standing behind their remarks.

Last month we received a letter to the editor. It was reasonably well written and made some interesting points, even if it was a little verbose and would require editing for length. Essentially, it was a letter worried about Lindsay’s growth. We certainly would have published an abbreviated version of it.

But then came the ending.

“The Advocate now has a fairly strong voice in the community through its hard work ethic and diligence and commitment. They might even print this controversial, anonymous letter. If it doesn’t, it is a measure of the power its advertisers now hold.”

There was no name at the end. To the writer’s statement above, that simply isn’t true. We would have been happy to publish it. We are not printing it

because he or she didn’t identify themselves, didn’t leave contact information, and was wholly mysterious when there was no need.

On our letters page in any edition of the Advocate, the attentive reader will see the following written: “The Advocate welcomes your letters. We do not publish anonymous letters unless it’s a matter of public importance and/or someone risks harm by writing us.”

We hardly think that was the case, given this content.

Similarly, Canadian Press (CP) states: “We only promise anonymity when the material is of high public interest and it cannot be obtained any other way…(and)…we do not allow anonymous sources to take cheap shots at individuals or organizations.”

Readers should always be skeptical of the motives of an anonymous author.

Otherwise, how can we discern the legitimacy of the person’s viewpoint?

When I think of anonymity, I think mainly of social media and what a public bathroom wall it has become, in terms of communication. (I stole that from a friend. It’s perfect.) On Facebook or X (formerly Twitter) anonymity on news stories is typically the province of the brash, opinionated, and uninformed. It is seldom for the erudite, thoughtful or kind.

So please, readers, email us your letters.

Keep them short. But most of all, let us know who you are and that you’re willing to stand behind the comments you’re making.

* EDITORIAL * No news is bad news It would be an understatement to say the media landscape has been under constant pressure and undergoing rapid change.

Meta (Facebook) continues its battle with the federal government, blocking online news from reaching its feeds, or on Instagram, which it also owns. (Google, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, took a combined 80 per cent share of the $14 billion online ad revenues seen in the country in 2022, according to the federal government.)

Now, in a shocking turn of events that continues to reverberate, Metroland announced the closure of 70 print newspapers across Ontario, throwing more than 600 people out of work. This includes Kawartha Lakes This Week which started in 1977.

It was only a few months ago when the Advocate shone a spotlight on the 10-year anniversary of The Lindsay Post’s demise. Here we are again, chronicling the end of another media outlet. We are saddened by the loss of real news outlets in favour of corporate social media giants.

Planned long before we knew of Metroland’s announcement, we are launching The Business Advocate in October, a magazine focused on business news across the whole Kawartha Region, including Peterborough. It publishes three times per year. Kawartha Social, a lifestyle magazine, will launch in November and is focused on community, culture, food, fashion and home, covering the same geographic region.

The Advocate has received numerous emails and calls about what our response might be as Metroland vacates print news. As this city’s only remaining news and features publication in print, we certainly have a responsibility to do all we can to serve the public interest.

What that might look like involves an honest and logical look at what the community needs and what we have the capacity to do. Rest assured; this is the question that preoccupies us in the shadow of this announcement.

In the meantime, we will continue to serve our readers and advertisers to the best of our ability through The Lindsay Advocate and its new magazines.

* SPOTLIGHT * No more cuts and privatization of healthcare (Re: Trevor’s Take - The Healthcare Tipping Point – August Advocate magazine.)

The Conservatives have cut health care services across the board and allowed many seniors to die needlessly in long-term care. They don’t bother mandating air conditioning in those same homes in heat waves, and they allow their friends to run those homes with the absolute minimum of care standards. There is absolute verifiable proof from many other countries, that a living wage and well-managed available public health care leads to a stable economy and healthier citizens. Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, even many of the less wealthy countries, like Spain guarantee free and full health care.

Yet the Conservatives insist we must cut and privatize.

I always respected the true small-c conservatives fiscal ideology in the past, and I am not a knee-jerk voter. I will vote for the person who I think will do the best job for my area. Unfortunately, the provincial Conservatives of today, from the Mike Harris period onwards, adhere to the policy of feathering their own nests, claiming vociferously to be ‘for the working man’ while furiously working behind the scenes to decimate public services.

Services for which we all paid, and which we deserve.

* OPINION * Post-pandemic labour shortage a two-way street

By Kirk Winter, a retired high school history teacher living in Lindsay who covers politics, education and sometimes business stories for the Advocate.

A brief survey of some small business owners in Kawartha Lakes done early in the summer season by the Advocate indicates that in all but one area of their operations, local entrepreneurs are hopeful about the future.

The primary area of concern expressed by over 90 per cent of them indicated a worry about finding adequate labour, skilled and unskilled, to meet their customers’ needs.

Some businesses are turning away work because they do not have adequate staffing. Some in the food services industry are reducing their hours to reflect the number of paid staff they can attract to work every day. Other small businesses are asking family to fill in the holes in the work schedules, often sparking stress at home.

When asked where their potential staff has gone, several small business owners blame the pandemic for chasing away early retirees. Others blame the federal government for offering excessive benefits to the unemployed. One suggested that the legalization of marijuana has removed motivation for many to seek gainful employment. A couple of more insightful employers, however, suggested the problem might be the jobs themselves. Are largely seasonal parttime positions with no benefits or job security what people want? The living wage in Kawartha Lakes is estimated to be $19.05 an hour – and that assumes two people working full time at that rate.

One long-time Kawartha Lakes business owner, who asked for anonymity because they were not sanctioned by any of the Downtown BIAs to speak on their behalf, told the Ad-

vocate small businesspeople need to rethink how they attract labour, how they train labour and how they ensure the workplace is safe enough and fiscally rewarding enough to keep folks interested in coming to work every day.

“My children are my sounding board,” the individual said.

“If they are not attracted by what I propose, likely none of their peers are. We need to do this a whole different way because I think these shortages with an aging population and fewer high school students are here to stay.”

Local school bus providers, who have been hammered by drivers quitting in droves during and after the pandemic, are now offering $500 signing bonuses, and an equal amount of money for lasting the whole school year.

A local resort in need of kitchen and cleaning staff has completely rethought their interview process. Potential employees are asked to come to the lodge, put in a full day of paid work, and then and only then if they like the job and the work assignments are they asked to sit for an interview.

The reality that many employers refuse to recognize is that the post-pandemic labour market is a sellers’ market, and until more bosses realize this and rethink what they are offering potential employees, key positions may never be filled.

Educators at all levels struggling with Artificial Intelligence

As students returned to school this fall, an academic dark cloud has been hanging over education. It has nothing to do with the spectre of COVID-19 returning in force, or the possibility of teacher strikes.

This year’s dark cloud is as old as education itself: student cheating. It’s not that students are handing in other students’ work or paying someone to write their assignments. Instead, they are submitting assignments researched and written by sophisticated artificial intelligence software like ChatGPT or Bing AI—and then claiming the work as their own.

The Advocate spoke to staff at the Trillium Lakelands Board of Education, Fleming College and Trent University and discovered that most are playing catch-up with AI platforms, hoping students will use the technology properly and honestly as one of the many research tools one might use while creating an assignment. Elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities are preparing in-house tools, like AI detection software to catch those who ignore this advice and cheat. Schools are also debating what appropriate punishments might be for this new sophisticated form of academic dishonesty.

AI is a catch-all term for several programs currently available that are able to mine the internet for information, organize that information in a coherent manner and even write a professional looking report which, with a little bit of editing, could be passed for the original work of a human being.

All students need to do is go to ChatGPT, Bing AI, or several other programs and input the question they are researching.

Within seconds their initial research will be done for them.

Not only does AI do the students’ research for them, it all but writes the paper for the students too.

Educators take action Trillium Lakelands District School Board is aware of the possibility of misuse of this technology.

“With all emerging technologies, our staff are in the initial stages of learning about AI technology at the same time as the rest of society,” said Sinead Fegan, communications officer for the Trillium Lakelands District School Board. “What remains important to TLDSB is that students and teachers learn how to integrate it into the classroom in a meaningful way and that it does not replace the need to ensure students have strong research skills and are still able to demonstrate their understanding of curriculum expectations.”

Fegan said the board realizes that student use of AI can be a double-edged sword.

“There are pros and cons to AI and, similar to all technologies, used in the right way, it can be beneficial to learning.

When used to decrease effort, learning can suffer.”

One parent, who would not go on the record so as not to draw attention to their child who attends a Lindsay high school in Grade 12, is not impressed with the technology.

“With AI you don’t have to work as hard. That is a bad message. It is a worry as a parent because of how this will impact kid’s work ethics. What is it teaching kids about discipline?”

This parent said AI is feeding into the idea that there is an easy way out.

“There needs to be consequences when students are caught.”

And yet the board has rejected the idea of blocking or restricting AI sites, claiming this is “not an effective method of helping staff and students learn about these tools and how they can be utilized to support learning.”

Fegan said that teachers meet every year to discuss the appropriate use of technology and set expectations regarding plagiarism and “students are expected to create their own original work for submission and should a student use AI, it must be disclosed as a reference the same way any other resource would be.”

NOT SURE WHAT AI CAN DO? Artificial Intelligence can generate a report, essay, song, analysis, and much more, making it a challenge for teachers. In this sidebar, we simply asked ChatGPT to “write a short book report on Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.”

This was generated in about three seconds and was left unedited.

"Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare is one of the most famous and enduring love stories in the literary world.

Set in the city of Verona, the play tells the tragic tale of two young lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, whose families are embroiled in a bitter feud.

Brett Goodwin, executive vice president of academic and applied research and innovation at Fleming College, said the school has assembled a committee of faculty and staff to examine the implications of generative AI in curriculum development and student assessment.

Goodwin believes that AI has the potential to be utilized as a learning strategy and leveraged in industries and in the professions Fleming students are pursuing. He said that “professors are determining how to imbed generative AI in curriculum to ensure that students are familiar with its appropriate use to advance their fields of study.”

When asked what the school is doing to ensure that AI-generated assignments are not being submitted as original student work, Goodwin stressed the role that faculty and staff need to take providing clear direction to students on the appropriate use of AI in their courses.

He said that if this fails and there is a confirmed violation of the Fleming College misconduct policy “sanctions are levied, as appropriate.”

All students need to do is go to ChatGPT, Bing AI, or several other programs and input the question they are researching. Within seconds their initial research will be done for them. Not only does AI do the students’ research for them, it all but writes the paper for the students too.

Staff, with the help of the Learning Design and Support Team, have been changing assignment design to avoid AI-generated student submissions, he added.

One option teachers may consider is the completion of assignments in class or the changing of assignments to those that aren’t conducive to AI. Professor Kathryn Norlock, associate dean of humanities and social sciences, academic programs, and chair in ethics, department of philosophy at Trent University said there had been a lot of conversations this summer about AI and how staff are going to deal with this new challenge in their classrooms.

“We must learn to live with AI,” Norlock said. “We have revised our academic integrity policy updating it to include AI. Students will clearly know what plagiarism is and unauthorized use of AI will be part of that policy.”

Norlock said staff are split on the use of AI by students.

Some staff, she said, will forbid it. Others will “allow the use of the AI proofreading program Grammarly as a tool for improving writing. Most will say no to the use of research bots like ChatGPT.” A fourth-year computer science student at University of Waterloo, who also asked for anonymity to avoid academic scrutiny, called ChatGPT just a “gateway drug” to other better programs “that are less likely to be detected.”

“My roommate makes bank teaching these programs and their red flags to dozens of students looking for a leg up.

Nobody has the time to do all the reading and assignments,” they said.

A third year English student at Trent University said “many undergraduates use ChatGPT, then Grammarly and then hire someone like me to proof the submitted copy.”

But Norlock said that a program like ChatGPT, as it is currently constituted, is often flagged by professors for several reasons including spouting internet inaccuracies that better belong on conspiracy sites, making up facts that don’t exist and providing citations that are completely wrong just for the sake of having them.

“ChatGPT produces material that is full of awkward sentences that are a giveaway and producing empty statements that mean nothing.”

Norlock said that she plans to spend more time talking with her students about academic integrity so that there is no confusion regarding the use of platforms like ChatGPT. She said many professors at Trent are completely rethinking what assignments they use and how those assignments are completed, in an attempt to improve student learning and discourage the use of AI. “I expect that more assignments will be done in front of professors,” Norlock said. “I expect there will be more inclass assignments and quizzes that will have students write about what they are thinking. It is tough to do a lot of this at scale when you have 150 students and no assistance with marking.”

Norlock said that some of her colleagues are excited about AI and in departments like sociology, computer science and media studies there will be significant use of AI at Trent.

Her fear is that as AI advances in complexity and sophistication, its long-term impact on academia may be more than just tempting some students to cheat.

“One potential impact on universities is AI doing the grading of assignments,” Norlock said. “There might be fewer instructors in an effort to save money on payroll.”

The potential loss of teaching jobs—just one more concern with AI—is a prospect that shows AI is both far-reaching and transformative, for better or for worse. LA

Tunnel vision: Boring into a local myth

On July 30, 2016, an intriguing post appeared on Facebook. “Apparently Lindsay has a huge underground tunnel system,” the message read. “It’s a shame they don’t open it up to the public; [it] would make a great tourist attraction.”

As is typical on social media, this post was followed by a slew of comments, each adding another angle to the tunnel story: “I believe they went to the former arsenal factory, to the armoury, town hall, and a few other places of interest,” speculated one person. “There are miles and miles [of tunnels] down there,” declared another. “They were designed to move the ammo from the old Trent [Rubber] plant that was originally the ammo plant to the armouries and over to the old mill etc. They run all over town.”

One individual, with a flair for the dramatic, insisted that these tunnels “were like the tunnels from the underground base at North Bay to the launch sites for the nukes.”

The stories are widespread and well-known. But what is the truth behind them?

Descending into history The tale likely traces its origins back to the First World War, when the land between Lindsay Street and Albert Street South was redeveloped by the federal government for use as a munitions factory.

The Dominion Arsenal was in operation by 1917, and an underground tunnel system did indeed offer a convenient and clandestine means of moving both munitions and personnel between the various buildings on the property. A 1922 description of the site makes mention of a passageway measuring just over 353 feet in length and a little over 13 feet in width that connected the arsenal’s boiler house, bullet plant, case plant, machine shop, rolling mill, and store house. Farther south was an underground rifle range measuring some 1,800 feet in length, six feet in width, and seven feet in height. Both the passageway(s) and the rifle range are clearly indicated on plans of the property dating to 1926.

In the spring of 1965, Rick Harding – who incidentally lives in the arsenal superintendent’s former residence on Lindsay Street South – was invited by a friend to explore the then-abandoned tunnels.

They made their way through an overgrown field to an old guardhouse, where a set of steps led to a cavernous tunnel 18

built from reinforced concrete designed to withstand the shock of an explosion. Harding and his friend made their way westwards through this underground tunnel – almost certainly the old rifle range – which was flooded with water. “When I finally got to the end of the tunnel, the water was almost neck-deep, and in that it was almost like an Indiana Jones movie,” Harding recalls. “There were live rats, dead rats, leaves, branches, mud, and really tepid water.”

By the late 1960s, the former arsenal was home to a rubber factory, and Harding remembers that a huge set of steel doors in one of the buildings led directly to the tunnels below. “For the next five or six years I started exploring them as much as I could,” Harding says.

The vast tunnel system that piqued Harding’s curiosity more than half a century ago has since been demolished or filled in – keeping inquisitive trespassers out of what were surely dangerous places. Little to nothing remains. Still, lurking amid the tall grass beyond James Street are earthen depressions suggestive of tunnel infrastructure. Heavily overgrown and no longer accessible, these holes were apparently used by arsenal staff to leave the tunnel system in the event of an emergency. Harding salvaged a metal hatch from one of these escape routes, and today displays it in his yard.

tunnels were indeed constructed underneath the school’s oldest addition, which dates to 1953. “These tunnels are about five feet high by four feet wide, constructed of concrete, and carried electrical supply, steam supply, and condensate return water supply,” Keenan explains. Subsequent additions to LCVI in 1963 called for more utility tunnels to service the cafeteria kitchen, shop rooms, and small gymnasium. Thus, while subterranean passages certainly exist at LCVI, Keenan reminds us that “these tunnels are not connected, and never were, to any other site (in town).”

Darrin Leuty, who has spent years in maintenance at the armoury, backs up Keenan’s statements about the LCVIarmoury-town hall tunnel rumour. “No, there were never any tunnels under the armoury,” Leuty says conclusively.

“It was the first thing I looked for when I received the keys.

There is no evidence on any outside wall of anything (that appears to be) bricked in.”

Simple logic also rules out a tunnel running between LCVI, the armoury, and the old town hall. These buildings were constructed at different times, by different entities, for different purposes: why might high school students need to access the council chambers under the veil of subterranean secrecy?

Sealing up a rumour The Dominion Arsenal tunnels are thus well-documented – both on paper and in anecdote. But they were confined to the arsenal property and never went beyond it. So, what about the “miles and miles” of other tunnels that allegedly “run all over town?”

A persistent rumour holds that there is (or was) a tunnel linking LCVI, the Victoria Park Armoury, and the old Lindsay town hall, at 180 Kent Street. Several LCVI alumni claim to have been told yarns to this effect over the years, seemingly verifying the story’s accuracy.

Unsurprisingly, this rumour probably stems from exaggerated facts.

Even if a tunnel had in fact been built to link the three facilities, a peacetime excavation project on this scale would have aroused considerable interest in the local press, and eyewitness accounts of the work would have been firmly ingrained in the community’s collective memory for years thereafter. Yet there is no evidence that this happened.

Moreover, tunnel-boring between the high school and 180 Kent Street West would have likely disturbed basements in residential properties on Albert and Sussex Streets, not to mention municipal infrastructure like sewers and water pipes.

What else lies beneath?

If the arsenal tunnels have been accounted for, and if a one kilometre-long tunnel between LCVI and 180 Kent Street never existed, what else might have spurred tales about tunnels?

Quite possibly, they might have been inspired by the existence of short and frankly unexciting passageways connected with specific buildings or places at either end of downtown Lindsay.

In the west, a couple of intersecting utility tunnels once linked the Ross Memorial Hospital’s original 1902 facility with its nurses’ residence (opened in 1911), an addition dating to 1931, and an underground boiler room. As was the case at LCVI, these tunnels fulfilled a primarily utilitarian function; namely, to carry steam from the boiler into

the rest of the hospital for heating purposes.

That being said, the hospital’s tunnel system was apparently large enough to accommodate people. “I can attest to having been in the hospital sometime in July or August of 1965 when, upon exiting the morgue situated across the hall from the lab on the lower level, several young nurses hurried down the hall and around the corner into what my father said was a passage under the parking lot between the main hospital and the nurses’ residence,” recalls former mortician Jim Mackey.

Mackey’s recollections are verified in site plans from 1958, which clearly show a pair of tunnels, demarcated by dotted lines, leading from one part of the hospital to another.

Immediately north of the hospital, the former Lindsay fairgrounds also boasted a set of “tunnels.” Built of concrete and opened for use around 1945, these passageways were not technically tunnels in the traditional sense; they were more like underpasses designed to facilitate the safe passage of pedestrians and vehicular traffic beneath the racing oval. (Designed with public safety in mind, it is somewhat ironic that, after being flooded with rainwater, they posed a drowning risk.) Like much of the former fairgrounds,

these underpasses survive only in the recollections of older residents.

At the opposite end of town, an ancient-looking tunnel runs below the auditorium of the Academy Theatre.

The Advocate was given exclusive access to this sloping, stone-lined passage, which connects a maintenance closet just off the women’s washroom in the west with the green room, beneath the stage, in the east. As with tunnels at LCVI and the hospital, this appears to have been designed to service plumbing and electrical infrastructure – though at one time, it may well have enabled a cast and crew from long ago to move from one part of the theatre to the other without having to walk through the auditorium or duck outside. Today, the tunnel’s eastern entrance is sealed, while assorted clutter occupies the entrance at the west end, out of sight and out of mind.

Light at the end of the tunnel?

Other tunnels may yet exist within Lindsay. It seems probable, though, that the details of two or three tunnels have been conflated, and their geographical extent exaggerated.

What is it like to play girls’ hockey?

The Lindsay Lynx Girls Hockey Association uses the catchphrase “Serious Hockey, Serious Fun” for a reason.

The Lynx Association brings a whole different meaning to girls’ hockey. It is so great for girls just wanting to have fun and to achieve a future in sports.

“Seeing my daughters play on a boys’ team during their younger years and then progressing over to girls’ hockey, and me being a part of that development is special to me. Also, being able to coach other girls to make sure they can play so we can grow the sport," said Coach Banks.

Lynx hockey helps to create friendships between girls from different parts of the Kawartha Lakes area. It gives these players a second family that they didn’t know they needed. A lot of girls start at a young age and others start later in their childhood but no matter when they start, they almost always find a great group of girls.

“I love the fact that I grew up coaching boys’ hockey, through the years, it is amazing to see how far the sport has come for girls’ hockey,” said McDermott.

Some girls don’t always get the same attention in male-dominated leagues, but the Lynx gives them a spotlight, a chance to play with friends and gives them the attention from coaches and potential recruiters that they deserve.

No matter what team you have played on before or if you didn’t even play, you’ll still have fun no matter the circumstances and these memories you make will last a lifetime. That is why the Lindsay Lynx Girls Hockey Association is so important to our community because it gives girls the confidence to break down barriers and play in a male-dominated sport.

Under 18 Lynx players, Rylyn and Mya Banks love girls’ hockey. “The transition was difficult but after I got used to actually being passed to, I loved it,” Rylyn Banks said during a practice.

Local NHL player inks deal while home in Lindsay Lindsay has produced several hockey players who have made it to the NHL, such as distinguished players Ron Ellis, Rick MacLeish and Joe Primeau. But defenceman Vince Dunn is a current standout, signing a 4-year $29.4 million contract with the Seattle Kraken this summer.

Born in Mississauga, Dunn moved to Lindsay at a young age. After playing for the local AAA club, the Central Ontario Wolves, he moved on to the Peterborough Pete’s AAA before being drafted to the Niagara Ice Dogs in the OHL. He excelled early in his professional career with the NHL’s St. Louis Blues, raising the Stanley Cup in 2019 and bringing it back to Lindsay to share with the community at the Lindsay Recreation Centre and Ross Memorial Hospital. In 2021, Dunn was signed to the Seattle Kraken as part of the expansion draft and scored the inaugural goal on home ice.

It was on a sunny day this past July, that Dunn was back home in Lindsay, playing a round of golf at the Lindsay Golf Course for the annual Lindsay Muskies Jr. A tournament, when the contact extension with the Kraken came in. It was signed at the clubhouse before dinner was served. Not a common occurrence for the golf club to print off a NHL contact after a round, but a fitting spot for a kid from Lindsay to celebrate with the community.

Spiritual care has almost disappeared at RMH Hours for in-house chaplain down 90 per cent from 2020

Just a few years ago, patients at Ross Memorial Hospital wanting to talk to someone about life’s most profound questions could ask for one of the three chaplains who worked on site for a combined 40 hours per week. Today, there is one chaplain available in the building for four hours on Wednesday mornings.

It’s not a COVID-related change. The pandemic actually prompted an increase in hours in 2020, given that priests, ministers, pastors and imams weren’t allowed to visit members of their faith communities who were in hospital. From 40 hours a week in 2020, the allotment fell to 12 in May 2021, then to four a year later. The chaplain uses that time to visit patients and to lead a short worship service twice a month.

Chaplains provide emotional and spiritual support for people in hospital; the position also exists in other settings outside a house of worship such as the military and prisons. Although they typically come from a religious context, chaplains aren’t necessarily ordained as ministers or priests; many are lay people trained in compassionate, non-judgmental listening, and often have related special skills and training.

When patients are admitted to the Ross, they are asked whether they have a religious affiliation and whether they would like the chaplain to visit them. The hospital also provides a non-denominational sacred space (formerly known as the chapel) where anyone can spend time in quiet reflection. Local clergy are welcome to visit members of their congregations who are in hospital, but with many communities of faith experiencing declining membership and therefore reducing their own staff’s hours, their ordained 28

personnel have less time available to spend at the Ross than in the past.

The hospital — which provided background information but did not make anyone available for an interview — says that in an increasingly secular society, fewer patients seem to be interested in receiving spiritual care, although it does not track the number of requests for such care. Spiritual care doesn’t necessarily have to be religious care, the Ross says, noting that staff on the hospital’s recreation team do their best to keep tabs on people who are there for longer stays, and to provide support for all aspects of a patient’s needs, including passing along requests to the chaplain.

Whether clergy or lay people, rather than being the overbearing religious types they’re often assumed to be, chaplains have an important role to play in health care, says Ron Mahler. Formerly a chaplain at the Ross, he is now a spiritual care provider at the Peterborough hospital and has undergone extensive training in counselling and other aspects of his work.

“People’s spiritual wellbeing is often connected to their mental health and even their physical health,” Mahler says.

“We’re spiritual beings.” He and his colleague at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre are also available to staff, who are experiencing never-before-seen levels of stress and burnout as a result of the pandemic, cuts to health care, overwork and a patient population that’s increasingly violent and disrespectful of their expertise.

Barely one-quarter of Canadians take part in a group religious activity such as going to church at least once a month, according to Statistics Canada. (The proportion may well

be higher in Kawartha Lakes, where churchgoing is still a central part of life for many, if much less common than in the past.)

Whether patients attend church or not, they still need connection and compassion, says John Boyachek. “Most people in the hospital are looking for some comfort and guidance and help, and someone to talk to about spiritual things, because they’re contemplating their mortality, whether it’s a simple operation or something terminal.”

Boyachek is lead pastor at Lindsay’s Fairview Baptist Church and secretary of the Lindsay and District Ministerial, an association of local clergy. Twenty years ago, he notes, it wasn’t unusual for members of his congregation to spend a month in hospital recovering after surgery. Now, many patients are in and out in a few days. Those staying for longer periods have more serious health problems than in the past — they may be waiting months for a place in a nursing home or be in palliative care and nearing the end of their lives. Those conditions tend to prompt some deep questions about suffering, legacy, death, memories and eternity, even among those who wouldn’t call themselves religious.

Patients don’t necessarily have a strong local support network or even a loved one who lives in the area; they may be estranged from family or have outlived their most trusted

friends. “A number of people are disconnected,” Boyachek says. “There are people who are nervous talking to doctors and nurses. They may be dealing with family issues.” Someone trained in spiritual care can fill the gap, helping people process what they’ve heard from medical staff, especially when faced with a decision about a procedure, medication change or other major health issues, he says.

With nurses, occupational therapists, doctors and other medical professionals so overtaxed, there’s rarely someone who can set aside open-ended time to sit with a lonely or worried patient who’s grappling with a scary diagnosis or difficult treatment choices. That kind of care is exactly what chaplains exist to provide, but, says Mahler, the overwhelming majority of patients will not ask for such help, possibly because they’re leery of religiosity, but more likely because they simply don’t know there’s a confidential listener available to them.

“Most times people will keep going forward with their baggage and their fears,” Mahler says, “but if you go into their room and you go in gently, treating them and validating them as a person, they will open up to you and tell you anything.” He says he’s encountering far more people with mental health concerns than in the past.

the chaplain’s Wednesday morning hours. The hospital declined to provide specifics, but basic math dictates that four hours per week for the chaplaincy represents a vanishingly small amount in the $67-million budget line for salaries and wages in 2022, posted in the financial statements on the hospital’s website.

The 90 per cent decrease in hours allotted for spiritual care at the Ross is out of step with surrounding hospitals. The Peterborough Regional Health Care Centre’s two chaplains combine to work 40 hours a week. There’s a chaplain on-site one full day a week at each of Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare’s two much smaller hospitals. Soldiers’ Memorial in Orillia and the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg rely on volunteer spiritual care teams whose members are available at all hours in person or on call.

While the system in general, and the people at Ross Memorial Hospital in particular, work diligently to diagnose and treat physical ailments, medical structures are not primarily designed to meet the needs of a patient wondering whether anyone cares what happens to them or whether their life mattered. That’s where spiritual care comes in, says Boyachek. “It’s not science, it’s not medicine, it’s not clinical. It’s care.” LA

Big bus turning heads on Lindsay streets

Lindsay Transit recently took delivery of their first ARBOC Spirit of Equess 31-seat passenger bus, and initial reviews from both drivers and passengers are very positive.

Robert Horvat, supervisor of Transit Services, said, “Our drivers are thrilled with the new bus. It handles better and the overall ride and experience is much smoother.”

Horvat adds that response from the public has been very enthusiastic also. “Our operators,” Horvat said, “always mention the head turning effect that is occurring when they are on route. The passengers echo our operators’ opinion of the smoother ride and that (the Equess) looks like a real bus.”

The bus, which is a third larger than any other vehicle in the Lindsay transit fleet, can seat 21, and has room for another ten standing plus two wheelchair passengers.

Porter said, “As the community grows and council mandates service expansion, the demands/ridership will only continue to grow. Barring unforeseen issues, the municipality retains buses for a ten year life cycle, and staff need to be sure we are adequately planning for the future.”

This new bus was not inexpensive, costing almost $300,000, but the city was able to procure it at a price close to what they were paying for their smaller buses because in was already built and in stock ready for purchase.

The pandemic was very hard on Lindsay Transit’s ridership, reducing it significantly. Post-pandemic ridership sits at roughly 65-70 per cent of pre-pandemic ridership, Horvat said.

Through the Canadian Infrastructure Program (ICIP) Lindsay Transit was able to obtain funding for about 61 per cent of the cost of the vehicle, with the federal and provincial governments picking up the bulk of the purchase price. Transit is hoping that this purpose-built bus will have a long life expectancy and will still be in service at the ten year mark when the city typically looks at replacing buses with new fleet purchases.

The highest ridership counts were in 2019 with more than 2,300 weekly and 10,000 monthly riders. These numbers don’t include LIMO Specialized Transit which has seen an increase in ridership and new clients.

If budgeting allows, the ARBOC Spirit of Equess will be the first of a number of larger buses servicing transit passengers in Lindsay.

Rodney Porter, manager of Fleet and Transit Services said, “Staff continually evaluate the most appropriate plan for our fleet. Given the success of this bus and the continued growth of transit ridership, our plan is to replace our current cutaway models with purpose built buses such as the ARBOC Spirit of Equess. Replacement (of the smaller older buses) would occur when regular lifecycle replacement needs demand and budget permits, based on council approval.”

When asked about their thinking behind purchasing a bus that might be more commonly seen in Durham Region or Peterborough, senior transit staff made it clear they were looking at busing needs for the next decade.

recommitted to oil sands production, saying “We are in the business to make money, and as much of it as possible."

When I was seven, I came into some birthday money: $5!

My parents helped me open a Canada Trust bank account with it. My goal: save to buy a pony.

Alarmed by such news, many climate-concerned investors have been pulling their money out of the oil and gas sector.

Financial advisors might be reluctant to support that, especially when the fossil fuel industry is raking in mega profits, but times are changing. The head of the International Energy Agency says the writing is on the wall. Energy conservation and the transition to electric cars and new green technology means we will likely see peak oil by 2030. It’s all downhill from there.

I never did get the pony, but I did use my account to save for my education, a car, and eventually a house. During those years Canada Trust was taken over by TD bank, but my loyalty remained.

I never really thought about what the bank did with the money in my savings account. Thanks to the movie It’s a Wonderful Life, I learned from banker George Bailey “The money’s not there!” as he explained to customers their deposits are rolled into investments – not just hidden away in a vault.

As the world burns, where banks and pension funds direct our money is getting more scrutiny. And when you start paying attention, it doesn’t look pretty, at least for the climate conscious.

According to the recent fossil fuel finance report, Banking on Climate Chaos, Canada’s big five banks have been stoking the fires by financing oil, gas and coal expansion to the tune of $1.1 trillion since the Paris climate accord was signed in 2015. And top of the heap is RBC, which led the world in financing fossil fuels in 2022.

This money is by no means supporting the transition to clean energy. Earlier this year both Shell and BP walked back pledges to shrink oil production and shift to renewables. Chevron and Exxon plan on increasing production of oil and gas, products the UN secretary general calls “incompatible with human survival.” Recently, the new CEO of Suncor, Canada’s second largest energy company,

Those with pensions can join Shift Action, which is pushing the big pension funds to adopt more sustainable investment policies.

We can also call out our Canada Pension Plan. Its investment board owns an oil company that recently announced plans to spend $6.2 billion to increase oil production by 60 per cent. Tell them you are not amused.

And contact your MP to urge support for the Climate Aligned Finance Act, currently under study in the Senate.

It would ensure that banks and pension funds set and deliver on credible climate plans.

Since we can’t rely on oil and gas companies to voluntarily wind down production, Our banks need to pony up and invest our money in a cleaner, safer future.

Placing a bid: Auctions & auctioneers in Kawartha Lakes Travel back in time to Oct. 29, 1898. It’s a crisp autumn day in Lindsay, and a crowd is gathering on the lawn of Judge McIntyre’s former residence. Located on Waverley Avenue (as Bond Street was once known), the leaf-strewn grounds of this stately house are piled high with carpets, furniture, “and many other articles of household goods too numerous to mention,” reads an ad placed in The Watchman newspaper a week or so prior.

Then as now, people come from all over to look at the offerings and, after placing the highest bid, will take home something with which to furnish their own house or cottage.

Years pass, and as tastes and circumstances change, those same household goods are once more sold through auction.

Perhaps you have something in your living room that once graced Judge McIntyre’s home on Waverley Avenue?

Elias Bowes, who auctioned off the contents of McIntyre’s house 125 years ago, was one of several auctioneers across our area who did a thriving business around the turn of the 20th century. While Bowes was busy conducting sales between Eldon Township and Lindsay, the Irish-born Thomas Cashore was calling for bids in Fenelon Falls and points farther north. W.A. Silverwood worked out of Woodville, while T.A. Mitchell handled auctions in and around Omemee.

These gentlemen were all itinerant auctioneers, often travelling around the countryside to oversee the home furnishing and livestock sales they had been entrusted with. One of the first auctioneers to have his own base of operations, though, was James H. Lennon. Born in 1854, Lennon was by the 1890s the proud proprietor of The Auction Mart, a business located opposite the Benson House Hotel in downtown Lindsay. (Like Bowes, Lennon was also called upon to run estate auctions – and his advertising sometimes revealed the sad circumstances that resulted in having to auction off one’s possessions: “Mr. Petty has decided on breaking up house-keeping owing to Mrs. Petty’s ill health,” Lennon remarked in an auction notice dated Oct. 15, 1889.)

James Lennon died in 1946, aged 92. By this point in time, several Lindsay-based auctions were being overseen by Charles Lamb – who was perhaps best known for being a two-term mayor, and later a Member of Parliament. In February 1962, Lamb and his son, Kenneth, auctioned off the late M. Sootheran’s household wares over the course of seven and a half hours – not even stopping for a bite to eat. “There were hundreds of people at the sale, including antique buyers from many Ontario points,” Lamb informed the Lindsay Daily Post.

A few years before the Sootheran sale, a young man named Orval McLean conducted his first auction. “I had owned Midtown Furniture since 1956, when a lady phoned to sell her mother’s estate contents, but I had no space left in the store,” McLean remembers. “I mentioned that it was unfortunate timing, as I had plans of going to auction school in the spring. She liked the idea of an auction as a timely way to settle the estate, pleaded that I auction the contents, and finally convinced me to do the auction on site at her mother’s house.” This, McLean’s first auction, transpired on Jan. 24, 1959.

Twelve years later, in 1971, McLean acquired a farm south of Lindsay and began converting a former dairy barn and milk parlour into a permanent auction centre. (This facility, destroyed by fire in 2016, was subsequently relocated to a former cattle auction barn next door.) While Orval McLean himself never did end up attending auction school, sons Dale and Barry later enrolled in the Reisch World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa.

A little over six kilometres down the road from McLeans, Don Corneil opened a sale barn on June 27, 1975. “As a child, he always dreamed of being an auctioneer,” says Corneil’s widow, Sheila. “He used to practice auctioneering skills as a child on his way to school.” Like McLean’s, Corneil’s grew with the support of the immediate and extended family – and after being in the auction business for decades, both families have more than their fair share of stories to tell.

Sheila Corneil remembers doing an auction in which some 1,200 people showed up to place bids on fishing and hunting equipment that had been confiscated by the Ministry of Natural Resources. Corneil’s has conducted a lot of auctions over the last 48 years, and this was probably the largest. For the McLean family, one of their most memorable events was the five-day auction of the historic Boyd estate in Bobcaygeon. This extravaganza took place from Oct. 19-22, 1983, in McLean’s Lindsay sale barn, followed by an onsite auction in Bobcaygeon on Oct. 29. The sale drew buyers from across Canada, the United States, and as far away as England.

Much has changed in the auction world over the years, from the emergence of online auctions to changing tastes in collectibles and home décor. Even so, the thrill of a fastpaced live auction – during which one might catch up with friends over a coffee, hot dog and slice of pie from the lunch booth – is an experience that local auctioneers hope will never completely vanish.

In a large pot, cook ground beef until browned. Drain all fat, and return beef to the stock pot.

Add oil, onion and garlic. Saute for around 3 minutes, then add carrot. Cook until carrot is soft.

As the weather begins to cool and kids return to school, chili is a quick and hearty meal ideal for busy families. Prep in a slow cooker in the morning for a hot evening meal, or cook a large batch over the weekend for an easy weekday reheatable lunch or dinner. Vegetables listed are just a suggestion: mix and match with whatever fresh or frozen vegetables you have on hand!

Add chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, canned tomatoes and canned beans.

Cover and bring to a boil. Return heat to medium and cook for about 20 minutes. Taste the chili and modify to suit your tastes, adding up to a half cup of water is the chili is too thick, and more chili powder or cumin if the taste is not strong enough.

Add zucchini and parsley flakes. Mix gently and simmer covered for another 10 minutes, or until chili is well blended and thick.

6.

Serve right away or freeze for later.

The dangerous appeal of nostalgia

I was having lunch in Lindsay the other week at the Pie Eyed Monk. While thoroughly enjoying my meal, my mind wandered back some 45 years, to when it was not a beautifully renovated spot and was a rough-around-theedges pool hall and arcade. I was flooded with sensory memories of opening a 25-cent glass bottle of Coke, playing pinball and admiring the mysterious pool-playing men coming and going.

That rush of nostalgia seemed more intense than the tasty pizza I was eating.

There are very few of us that don’t experience nostalgia: the sentimental yearning for a happier time. For many of us, our listening habits may be one giant exercise in reliving the past. Despite trying to listen to new bands, 95 per cent of my playlist is all about nostalgia. (Or maybe it’s just because the Beatles and Led Zeppelin are the best bands ever.)

The fact is nostalgia is a powerful force in humans. That’s not conjecture: It has been proven and quantified in multiple studies.

And that’s why advertisers and corporations will use it relentlessly. Advertisers are literally reselling our childhood to us. We are being bombarded with (according to our individual demographic profile) any number of products meant to appeal to warm and fuzzy thoughts about our past.

And that’s because there are a lot of emotional positives with nostalgia. It can provide cultural cohesion and increase a sense of belonging.

But there are negative aspects. Researchers in South Africa found two types of nostalgia: a restorative nostalgia, in which people seemed to ignore historical fact; and a restorative nostalgia, where people were more critically aware of historical issues.

The political right across the globe has been using nostalgia as a marketing tool more and more frequently.

Of course, the most famous example would be ‘Make America Great Again.” While there have been many attempts to Canadianize that particular phrase, we can expect new slogans soon.

We are going to be asked to remember a time when there was common sense and we will be urged to bring it home.

Sounds benign on the surface, I guess.

But political nostalgia can be dangerous. It usually contains “dog whistles,” or subtle hints to imagine a time when there weren’t as many (insert a political, cultural, racial, gender group here). It also usually cherry picks history. Watching Leave it to Beaver may help some imagine how wholesome America was in the late 50s, but it won’t help me realize that a CEO only made 20 times the lowest paid worker back then (instead of 400 times now), and corporations were taxed at a much higher level than they are now.

I love history and most of my past. But getting all nostalgic about my past will do nothing to help me solve the complex problems of the present and future. So I’ll pass on the new old Coke – but I fear many won’t. lindsayadvocate.ca
