to the editor Fond memories of The Lindsay Post I enjoyed reading your piece on the 10th year anniversary of the closing of the Lindsay Daily Post. I can make the unique, I think, claim to have edited every community newspaper (except for the now-defunct North Kawartha Times) in what is now Kawartha Lakes in the course of a 20-year career in community journalism.

The 1980s, when I started, were good times. Papers were making money and had resources; no municipal council or school board meeting was complete without the presence of at least two or three local reporters. I had the good fortune to work for Gord Brooks, publisher of Lindsay This Week, who was a savvy trader and a true gentleman. The Daily Post, after the passing of long-time publisher Leroy Wilson, was overseen by a committee of community stalwarts, most with deep connections to the Progressive Conservative party. It was plenty of fun and very local.

The demise began in the 90s. Large circulation ‘shopper’ newspapers bit into revenue by offering free classified ads, community newspapers came under corporate control and the internet began its media domination. I was given my freedom from the press in the mid-2000s after a mercifully brief stint as the city editor of the Lindsay Post. Circulation numbers were going up, but not quickly enough, and ad revenue declined. Reporters left and weren’t replaced.

I laboured to fill an ever-expanding news hole with boiler plate copy of no local relevance. I’m surprised the Post lasted as long as it did.

I occasionally surf the internet and am gratified to see that good people I worked with – among them Jason Bain, interviewed for your piece – have landed on their feet. I am also pleased to see that publications like The Lindsay Advocate manage to survive and, I hope, thrive by understanding that their first priority is service to their communities.

Back in the early 1970’s, comedian and then-member of CBC’s Royal Canadian Air Farce Dave Broadfoot played The Academy Theatre. The local radio station, then on AM and known as 910 CKLY was a CBC affiliate and carried Air Farce on Sundays – and we had a major role in promoting the show at the time. Somehow, Dave wound up with a group of us at a staff member’s house for drinks after the show (I was on staff at the time and was an attendee).

It was a wonderful, laid-back evening full of laughter and stories of life in a small town. Suddenly, Dave spies a copy of The Lindsay Daily Post on the coffee table.

“Look at this!” he exclaims, picking up the newspaper, his eyes wide. “Classifieds on the front page! I have never seen this before.” He went on to talk about how a local newspaper defines the community, and if the publishers are smart, allowing the community to define the newspaper. It’s a partnership. “Obviously, classifieds are so important to the community that the Post puts them on the front page. Talk about serving your community.” Then he spied another section. “Look at this! Fred and Ethel over in Downeyville had the Archers from Reaboro over for euchre.” He paused.

“Can I take this with me? This is great material!” I never found out if he did.

Very sad . I was upset when the Lindsay Daily Post stopped publishing. It’s sad but as I see four generations in my immediate family going to the new technology and internet, I can see why. At 75, I have had to learn one fingered typing.

Thank you for your great articles (in the Advocate) and keeping the public informed. With the closing of so many great newspapers, I am very concerned that this new technology will give a very slanted view of what is happening.

Re: The last Post: Taking stock a decade after the newspaper’s closure (May Advocate). My first job as a young teenager was delivering the Post.

* UPFRONT * Art Gallery’s new money helps fund participating artists

100 Men of Kawartha Lakes may push to 200

Those who have been involved in the arts and culture sector for any length of time know how challenging it is to fund operations. The Kawartha Art Gallery, therefore, was thrilled to learn it received $50,000 in annual operational funding in the spring from the city for three years – funding that will enable it to continue paying Canadian Artists Representation rates in 2023.

Not only does this facilitate the gallery’s mission to advance a healthy rural creative economy, according to the gallery, it also fulfills an eligibility requirement for them to apply for Ontario Arts Council operational funding.

For the last five years, the 100 Men of Kawartha Lakes group has been effecting positive change in the community through a clever concept: each member commits to making four $100 donations a year, supporting a local registered charity and making a huge difference. There’s also a women’s version and children’s version of the organization.

Today, 100 Men is fast approaching 150 members hailing from right across the municipality. Members met about the group’s burgeoning size and it was agreed that the club should strive to reach 200 members before reassessing the question of its own growth.

“Council’s support of the gallery positions the gallery to plan strategically to work with our municipal government to integrate arts and culture more fully into our community and leverage an increased economic return for our community through cultural tourism,” said Executive Director Susan Taylor.

One possibility on the table would see members decide whether the group should form smaller divisions, representing each of the principal population centres in Kawartha Lakes. “Whatever happens will be good news for the Kawartha Lakes as our men continue to focus on giving back locally in a big way,” says current president Brad Campkin.

This year, cycling enthusiasts can expect to see several new products on the showroom floor at The Bike Garage in Lindsay – starting with the Bianchi line of pedal and e-bikes, which the William Street North business recently added to its lineup. Bianchi, an Italian maker, traces its history to 1885 and is the world’s oldest continuously-operating bicycle company.

Whether customers invest in one of these new Bianchi bikes or in one of the other brands sold through The Bike Garage, they can expect top-notch service provided by two full-time mechanics and one part-time mechanic, according to proprietor Allen Hussey. Those wishing to rent a bike or an e-bike can do so once more, as the business’s rental program has been reintroduced after a pandemic-induced hiatus.

The Bike Garage’s online presence continues to grow, with customers from across Ontario and as far away as Vancouver. “We call it ‘The Bike Garage experience,’” says Hussey.

“From sales to service to smiles, we encourage our customers to love every ride.”

While working full time at the Days Inn and Suites in Lindsay, general manager Candace Webster and front office manager Stacey Brown, often chat with tourists who are looking for things to do while in Kawartha Lakes.

While the list of things for visitors to do is long, “we seemed to never be able to find any non-motorized rentals for visitors to get out on the lake,” Brown says.

That’s how Outdoor Kawartha was born, a partnership between the two women for kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals on Cameron Lake in Fenelon Falls.

“We learned that the city had been waiting for a business to come along to do this,” Webster adds, noting there has been great local support, too, from the chamber of commerce and individual local businesses.

Expansion to Lindsay and Bobcaygeon is also possible in the future, and the two women are working with the city’s Signature Experience program in the hope to offer more next year.

Any leader of any government should feel there is palpable anger across the land. Shannon Proudfoot, a regular columnist for The Globe and Mail, wrote last month that “it’s become very obvious that there is, seething just under the surface in this country, a combustible, pressurized vein of certainty that some people count while others don’t.”

What Proudfoot expresses in her column was conveyed clearly by U.K. economics professor, Guy Standing, in 2011 when he wrote about an emerging class of people facing dire insecurity. This new class was stuck in tedious, low-paying work that offers little hope or meaning to their lives. He called this mass group the “precariat,” a play on the word precarious -- surely the dominant theme of their lives.

We all know members of the precariat, because they are everywhere. They have no labour rights. They often work more than one job. They have no health benefits. They have no savings because they don’t make enough money. They have no pensions. They have no paid holidays. They are burnt out, fed up, and outraged. And they are dangerous for civil society because of it.

You may know them as some of the angriest voices on social media. They may display disparaging signage about our current prime minister. They may be single moms, worried they cannot provide basic necessities for their kids.

As Standing notes, since 1980 the global economy has undergone a dramatic

transformation, with the globalization of the labor force, the rise of automation, and the insidious rise of Big Finance, Big Pharma, and Big Tech.

In Canada, as elsewhere, the golden age for the average worker peaked in the 1950s and 60s. Average people with average jobs led decent lives then, able to afford a house, a car, and to raise their children well. Now, big corporations call the shots. Labour unions have been weakened and have been recast as the enemy. Factories have been closed and offshored and the ones that remain are often not offering enough for workers to properly get by.

This is why, like Standing, I support a basic income, so that virtually no one will ever drop below the poverty line.

When someone doesn’t have to worry about where their next meal will come from, or whether they can pay their rent on time, it creates a growth mindset rather than a scarcity mentality.

People will start new businesses. They will take on additional or better work to get ahead. They will dare to dream that maybe they do “count,” after all, to use Proudfoot’s phrase.

I’m not inclined to quote Nicolo Machiavelli often, but in the 1500s he said it well: “…the people only want not to be oppressed.”

But that’s what our governments have allowed. Economic oppression. And they better figure out they need to do big and bold things, like basic income, fast if we are to ever get a little more economic justice for those who ask for nothing more than to lead decent lives.

Critics argue that basic income may disincentivize work and create a culture of dependency. However, evidence from pilot programs and experiments around the world suggests otherwise.

* SPOTLIGHT * Act of kindness at restaurant appreciated In early May I and my wife Elinor decided to go out for a quiet supper at Friendly's Chinese Restaurant in downtown Lindsay to celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary.

We had a good dinner and enjoyed the friendliness of another couple nearby with whom we had pleasant conversation.

Later, after our friendly, neighbouring diners had left I was just returning from the buffet when one of those diners reappeared, handed me a small slip of paper that looked like a cash register receipt and said, "Your dinners have been paid -- Happy Anniversary!"

While Basic Income alone cannot solve all the challenges posed by AI, it is a crucial component. It can alleviate the anxieties associated with job displacement, encourage innovation, and promote social cohesion.

Elinor and I were so pleasantly shocked at that simple act of kindness. This was something that neither one of us would ever forget. If that couple happens to be a reader of the Advocate, I would like them to know that their thoughtfulness meant more to us than words ever could have expressed.

* OPINION * Ten ways to hold local government accountable

The age-old adage "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" continues to resonate, emphasizing the need for citizens to keep a watchful eye on what and how their governments perform.

The world is witnessing a paradigm shift where public opinion and activism are providing an unprecedented opportunity and need for citizens to challenge authority and demand greater accountability.

However, the very nature of governance often lends itself to secrecy, making it difficult for citizens to access crucial information and understand the decision-making processes that impact their lives. What can any one citizen do to hold local officials accountable? Quite a lot actually.

1. Attend local government meetings: Attending council meetings is one of the best ways to hold elected and non-elected officials accountable. It allows you to hear first-hand what they’re saying and to voice your concerns.

2. Write letters and emails: Writing emails to local officials is a great way to let them know that their constituents are paying attention.

3. Use social media: Social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook can be a powerful tool for holding local officials accountable. Use them to share your views and to connect with other concerned citizens.

4. Organize protests and rallies: Organizing protests and rallies is another effective way to hold local officials accountable. These events can draw attention to specific issues and put pressure on officials to act.

5. Contact the media: News outlets can help spread the word about issues and hold officials accountable for their actions.

6. File complaints: If you have a complaint about a local official or department, you can file a complaint with the appropriate city office. It’s never been easier with the introduction of online voting, even though the opportunity and privilege to vote only comes along every few years.

10. Run for office: Last but not least, running for office is maybe the best way to hold local officials accountable.

As someone once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Fun and funky Airbnb within old Victoria Fruit Market in Lindsay

You’ve likely heard of Airbnb and perhaps stayed in one on holiday or when visiting family or friends.

However, Airbnb offers much more than just ordinary apartments, cottages or conventional homes. There are a multitude of eccentric and distinctive Airbnb options awaiting your stay. From boathouses and earth homes to castles and tree houses, you can find a wide range of extraordinary accommodations that can be booked—including one in downtown Lindsay that puts the ‘fun’ in funky.

You’d be forgiven if you went to the Lindsay accommodation at 23 Kent Street West and were confused at finding a security/central vacuum store instead of a place to sleep. It’s only when you arrive at the back entrance of the address do you realize you are in for something novel after being greeted by an original, old-time sign on the outside that reads Victoria Fruit Market.

Stepping inside the century warehouse, you almost expect to be hit with the verdant green smell found in vegetable and fruit markets. You almost can — it operated wholesale for nearly 100 years and closed during the pandemic.

The uniqueness does not end there. After acclimatizing to the idea of an Airbnb in a warehouse, there are more features that are remarkable and unexpected. The ancient, wooden fruit fridge is now a modern bathroom. The space has industrial rolling doors, authentic hardware and retro finishes. The original walk-in freezer, replete with a wooden door, has a cool, old metal handle on it. The biggest surprise though, is the 1969 restored Airstream (a camper trailer) awaiting guests for summer camping without mosquitoes or a winter camp-in, sans Jack Frost. It is really a 14

cool sort of outdoor experience, but indoors.

Lindsay owners Drew and Victoria Jessup are hospitality and rental pros with seven properties, including another Airstream at Mackenzie Beach Resort in Tofino, BC. The couple run Junebaby—a hospitality and design firm for short-term rentals. Victoria manages the portfolio of rental properties, and Drew is the designer-builder. The couple also have two children and a dog in their busy mix. As well, Victoria and a business partner opened Kindred Coffee Bar, in Lindsay in 2022 while Drew owns House Fitness, a gym in Peterborough since 2017.

The rehab of the space and Airstream was a labour of love for Drew with the inspiration coming from a few places including Tinker Hatfield, the acclaimed Nike shoe designer who lived in a warehouse in Portland, Oregon, in the U.S. and had an Airstream inside. He notes the Lindsay Airstream was in “really rough shape,” prior to his work to make it a modern, creative and comfortable sleeping spot.

There is a kitchen tucked into the warehouse, too. The rolling door can be opened for fresh air in the back.

The space also features an on-trend leather couch, a dining table, darts and other games and a large TV. Drew says since opening in March 2023, guests have checked in for a sleepover from Canada and the U.S., but he sees the space as more than just a place for people to lie their heads. They hosted a luxury picnic for brunch in collaboration with a company in Orillia and others have used

the space for cocktail and birthday parties, movie nights, and a babymoon (a vacation taken by parents before a baby is expected.) An upcoming baby shower is happening, too.

A couple has booked the warehouse for a small wedding and Jessup says they have reached out to wedding venues to position it as a spot for wedding parties to get ready and also as a place to stay after the nuptials.

Live music events are also on Drew’s radar for the Fruit Market.

Located downtown, it offers guests an endless variety of places to eat, be entertained or stroll to the Scugog River.

The parking lot at the Fruit Market backs onto another vintage building with as much history. The Coach and Horses Pub was built in the 1870s and was originally a livery stable. Guests only need to travel about 30 seconds to enter the tavern with original carriage doors and windows above where the horses used to look out. Visitors can see some of Lindsay’s most colourful residents there, grab cold beer and listen to live music during their stay.

Peter Miller, like many teens, left Lindsay vowing to never come back, as the place “was boring,” he said. The pandemic hit and he brought his family and fresh eyes back to Lindsay after 12 years in Toronto.

Many of Miller’s Toronto friends scattered too. He has rented the AirBnB as a spot to host his friends and show them the gems around town. He and his friends are fans of independent, old movie theatres and he introduced them to Sheila at the Century Theatre, and he said it gave them a “vibe and energy” that his friends thought was awesome.

All of Miller’s friends are dads and the time with them to catch up is well spent. The first time he rented the space was when his best friend was about a week away from welcoming his third child. Miller and his friends said, “We probably won’t see you for a while, so let’s all get together.”

Other times, they played darts and ordered pizza or dined at Gusto Grande and then watched their favourite bad movies.

Miller says renting the space frees up more room so people aren’t sleeping on his couch, and there’s just more comfort.

He also says it also has that wow factor.

“It’s a little secret spot, and if you’re not aware of it, it might be a little difficult to find.”

He says it was also a proud moment where he introduced his city friends to Lindsay and they said, “this place is really cool!” LA 16

Classics on Kent and Brits in the Park Celebrated Lindsay car shows return to downtown

If you hear the sound of distant thunder in the early morning of July 16, do not look to the skies.

Instead, grab your friends and family and head to Victoria Park and downtown Lindsay to take in the rare gathering of over 450 vintage vehicles from both the United Kingdom and North America – cars and owners who are gathering for two of the biggest cars shows on the Ontario summer circuit.

Victoria Park will be the centre of all things British that Sunday, with the Victoria British Car Club hosting Brits in the Park. 170-plus cars manufactured in the United Kingdom, restored to pristine condition, will be displayed for all to enjoy. A few steps away, Classics on Kent, sponsored by the Lindsay Business Improvement Association, will be an open-air car park, home to an impressive collection of 300 roadsters and muscle cars gathering to remind aficionados of a simpler time when gas was cheap and North America produced some of the most gorgeous cars in the world.

Classics on Kent Amy Occhipinti, acting executive director of the Lindsay BIA, hopes that this year’s Classics on Kent will serve two very important purposes. First, the show will give residents the opportunity to see some pretty cool cars. But, equally as important, the executive director wants to welcome people back to the downtown.

“We want people to come back to the downtown and see how beautiful it is now that the construction is finished,” Occhipinti said. “We want this show to not only celebrate the first time the classics have been on display since 2019 but also mark the comeback” of Lindsay’s downtown.

With that in mind, the BIA has branded this years Classics on Kent as more than a car show. Occhipinti said one of the first things visitors will notice is that there will be a vendors’ alley with more than 80 different vendors offering a variety of consumer products, some car-centric and some not.

There will be 16 sponsor booths in addition to the vendor booths highlighting a variety of goods and services.

“There will be a Kids Zone,” Occhipinti said, “where children can get their face painted and participate in a variety 20

of activities. There will be a display of pickle ball ongoing, street curling sponsored by the Lindsay Curling Club and live dancers on the main stage on Kent Street. There will also be a beer tent with a disc jockey providing music.”

Occhipinti said the downtown businesses that make up the group’s membership are solidly behind the show and are encouraging the street festival vibe the BIA is aiming for.

“We hope our member businesses are open and take advantage of the crowds this car show will bring to the downtown,” the executive director said.

Occhipinti noted the logistics of marshalling 300 cars on Kent Street and managing all the other activities that are going on will be much easier for the BIA with the help of a number of volunteers.

“Ideally we can do it with about 100 helpers,” Occhipinti said. “Volunteers will be involved with registration, organization, directing participants to where they need to be, clean up after the show finishes at 3 pm and help with the Kids Zone.”

The executive director said there will be a training day for volunteers the Saturday before so they will be comfortable with their assigned tasks.

When asked where Classics on Kent ranks in the pantheon of summer car shows, Occhipinti said the Lindsay show is one of the biggest displays anywhere in the province.

“Most of our car owners come from outside the area. Classics on Kent is a coveted show within the car community.

We have added a cruise event on the Saturday night before the show that will begin at the airport and end at the Howard Johnsons on Lindsay Street South.”

“We want this show to be a celebration of the return to normalcy that we have been lacking for a number of years,” Occhipinti added. John Thomas is certainly looking forward to this year’s Classics on Kent. John was at the first show almost 20 years ago and has participated in every show since.

Thomas and his friends are regular participants in the central Ontario summer car show circuit that begins around Mother’s Day and ends with the Norwood Fair in early November.

Unlike many other participants who are loyal to a specific brand or model of car, Thomas said, “I am loyal to no breed and appreciate all cars.”

During Thomas’ many years on the circuit he has shown everything from a 1947 Plymouth restored to stock to British-made trucks and Japanese sports cars.

This year John will be on Kent Street sharing his “resto-mod” 1977 Ford Maverick, an Arizona car that the previous owner spent over six years restoring and modifying with a drivetrain out of a five litre Boss Mustang. “I wanted a car that would be a reliable (powerful) cruiser,” Thomas said. “She is a real wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

When asked about the hobby that he and his friends have given so much time to over the decades, Thomas said, “It is a labour of love. It is a great hobby. Unfortunately, it is getting too expensive for younger members to get involved.

They are trying to buy a house and get their families started. With the cost of parts and labour you will never get your money back if you have to pay to have the work done.”

Thomas noted that many wonderful vehicles are being sold by families after the death of the owner because the next generation simply isn’t interested. A number of these vehicles are being bought up by a handful of uber-wealthy collectors who are building museum-sized collections of classic vehicles.

Asked if he had any advice for folks with cars of note Thomas laughed and said he “has never bought a painting just to hang on the wall. Quit worrying about that first stone chip and get out and enjoy them,” Thomas said.

Brits in the Park Bob May, the president of the Victoria British Car Club that was started by long-time members Jim Hancock, Russ Bolton and others in 1994, is very excited about this year’s combined show.

“Talks about combining the shows began before the pandemic,” May said. “Charlie Macdonald was president of the BIA at that time and was very supportive of the idea.

When the pandemic hit things were heading in the right direction. Once Classics agreed to run the show on our Sunday we met again in March of 2023 and here we are today.”

With a brief hiatus for the pandemic, Brits in the Park has been in operation since 1995.

“Victoria Park is such a beautiful location, made even more beautiful by the presence of all those British cars,” May said.

This year May expects 170-plus cars, 10 vendors catering to the needs of all things British and a food truck booked to provide sustenance to the hungry show goers.

May first became involved with British cars growing up in the Niagara region where an English car dealership sat proudly only a few blocks from his family home. May said he fell in love with British cars due to the proximity to that dealership and with a little help from a friend.

“My best friend growing up was from Blackpool, England,” May said, “and that relationship strengthened my interest even more in English motorcars.”

May has been involved with the Victoria British Car Club since 2014, first as a musical performer at Brits in the Park and then as a member and now club president. May shared that the club has a far-flung membership including many British car enthusiasts from Peterborough and Haliburton.

When asked what kind of vehicles will be on display, May suggested that probably the ubiquitous Austin Mini and the sleek two-seater Triumph TR-4 and TR-6 will be in plentiful supply.

One of those TR-6 cars belongs to founding member Russ Bolton and has quite a history.

Originally manufactured in 1972, the car had been written off as a wreck following an accident. Bolton did a complete frame-off restoration in 1995 that required the car to be completely disassembled.

When asked what attracted him to the TR-6 Bolton said, “they are unique, smaller two-seaters. They are sporty and I love driving stick.” Bolton added there is a level of simplicity to the vehicles that is attractive for those considering a

restoration. He also points out that despite the fact that many of these cars are more than 50 years old, there are a number of companies, both in England and North America, who still manufacture almost all the parts including the upholstery that makes restoration to factory specifications possible.

Bolton’s TR-6 still has fewer than 60,000 miles on the odometer, and seldom is it driven more than 1,000 miles a summer.

Bolton agrees with Thomas that the collector community for classic cars is aging quickly and that young “gear heads” are choosing to put their time and money into small fast Asian cars made famous by the Fast and Furious movie franchise.

“Custom shops are available to do work on those cars, but not so much for either British or classic vehicles anymore,” Bolton said.

If TRs aren’t to your liking, May added that connoisseurs of more rare British vehicles like Austin-Healeys, Jaguars and Rolls-Royces will not be disappointed by the collection on display either as the interests of the local British car club collectors run far and wide.

When asked about the legendary unreliability of many of the British vehicles, particularly when exposed to harsher climates like that of Canada, May said that British cars and their intoxicating mix of beauty and foibles are definitely an acquired taste for the first-time collector.

“If your car isn’t leaking oil, something is wrong,” May joked.

Typical of many summertime car shows, there will be prizes handed out at Brits in the Park to recognize the first and second place finishers in 17 different categories of English automobiles. There will also be two special trophies handed out recognizing Best in Show and Car of the Year.

A culinary delight in Kawartha Lakes

Nestled in the heart of Kawartha Lakes, the Olympia restaurant stands tall for its history, architecture, and its enduring charm as one the most consistently great restaurants in the region.

Try for a window seat, as we did, or in the heart of summer take advantage of the best patio in town. For a beverage, choose something from the Olympia’s well-appointed wine list or perhaps one of their classic or new cocktails.

An exquisite Aperol orange spritzer is one of two new cocktail offerings. The refreshing blend of flavours sets the perfect tone. Even better, though, was the new lavender lemonade. This captivating creation, featuring indigo blue gin, lavender simple syrup, lemonade, and a sprig of rosemary plucked from the Olympia's own stock, was a fragrant symphony.

Cheese lovers will want to try the saganaki from the appetizer menu, pan-fried kefalotiri cheese accompanied by grilled pita and a generous squeeze of fresh lemon. The cheese's golden crust gave way to a warm centre that harmonized beautifully with the tangy lemon and smoky notes from the grill.

Calamari fritti is another great choice from the appetizer portion of the menu. Hand breaded, it was lightly fried to perfection and served with a side of fresh lemon and a dollop of tzatziki. It’s easy to overcook calamari, leaving it too chewy, but the Olympia consistently gets it right.

Moving on to the entrées, we couldn't help but admire the presentation of the balsamic chicken and feta when our attentive server, Dani, brought it. The grilled chicken breast, nestled on a bed of flavourful rice, was adorned with succulent tomatoes, crumbled feta, and plump kalamata olives. A drizzle of balsamic reduction added a touch of sweetness to this savoury masterpiece.

The Angus New York striploin, the second entrée we sampled, was a testament to Olympia's dedication to quality.

Not everyone realizes this Greek restaurant has one of the best steaks in town. The eight-ounce hand-cut steak was charbroiled to perfection, boasting a mouthwatering aroma. The special steak spice blend infused the meat with a tantalizing blend of flavours.

For dessert, we shared the raspberry Greek yogurt cake and the cookies and cream cake, part of the restaurant’s revolving array of delicious desserts. The raspberry Greek yogurt cake was a delicate balance of tartness and sweetness, with a velvety texture and fruity notes to linger on the taste buds.

The cookies and cream cake, on the other hand, was a chocolate lover's dream come true. Each layer was decadent and satisfying.

Local green initiatives across city show how to work with nature for success

Wildfires. Droughts and record high temperatures. Pollution. Habitat loss. The U.N. reports that a million plant and animal species are at risk of extinction due to human activity.

With funding from Kawartha Conservation and the municipality, Armstrong’s group hired an experienced local contractor (Bob Howe, also responsible for a rain-garden at the Lindsay Armoury’s northeast corner).

Every day brings more disheartening news about the environment. So let’s take a mid-summer break and explore five good news environmental stories.

They’re a diverse set— a rain-garden and a tallgrass prairie restoration, a farmer who’s put his chicken coop on wheels, birds used to control birds, and a disc golf course at a conservation area.

What they have in common is they’re all happening here in Kawartha Lakes, and all show local individuals and organizations rolling up their collective sleeves and partnering with nature in innovative ways to solve problems.

Fenelon Falls Rain-Garden The idea came during a tour the Fenelon Falls Horticulture Society arranged with a Kawartha Conservation technician to identify some worthwhile projects.

Kathy Armstrong, then-president of the society, explains what happened when they reached Maryboro Lodge: “We saw that one area got all the run-off from Oak Street. It was a grassy field and water would rush down there then into the lake without any filtering.”

The recommended solution was a garden to capture stormwater and remove pollutants, a rain-garden.

rock to keep soil from washing away, and a few years later returned to expand the garden to its current size.

The Society planted native shrubs, flowers and grasses recommended for rain gardens – hardy, low-maintenance plants well-adapted to the conditions.

The garden serves its intended purposes admirably but is successful in other ways too.

The blossoms, seed-heads and berries of the native plants attract and support bees, butterflies, and birds.

The gardens are attractive for visitors, too. “People think it is stunning,” says Armstrong. “They love to find out it’s also beneficial.”

Worth a visit any time of year, but maybe especially now, suggests Armstrong, “because it holds water, during the summer when other gardens are withering, it is thriving.”

Tallgrass Prairie Restoration in Ballyduff Situated near the Oak Ridges Moraine and adjacent to the Fleetwood Creek Natural Area, Ballyduff is one of 33 properties Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) actively manages. Its 10 kilometres of recreational trails are open to the public.

Ballyduff’s varied terrain includes upland forest, wetlands, sand barrens, meadows, and now tallgrass prairie.

Unsurprisingly, most of us are unfamiliar with tallgrass prairie. “It is,” KLT Land Stewardship Manager Hayden Wilson points out, “one of the rarest ecosystems in North America and continues to decline.” Less than two per cent of what originally existed in Ontario remains.

The native grasses that make up the prairie differ from grasses we see in parks, meadows, and pastures. They don’t begin growing until late May, their roots reach down several metres in search of water, they grow to two metres or more in height, and produce seed in October.

“They are particularly resilient to some of the potential effects of climate change – droughts, hotter temperatures and increased extreme weather events,” says Wilson. “They are incredibly robust and flexible ecosystems that flourish on parts of our landscape if given the chance.

found several species that showed the area might at one time have been covered in prairie ecosystems.

In addition, they support several bird species at risk – grasshopper sparrows, meadowlarks and bobolinks – as well as native insects. We have the donors of the Ballyduff Trails property, Ralph McKim and Jean Garsonnin, to thank for the restoration.

It’s been arduous work: the fields were blanketed with dense mats of dog-strangling vine and gnarly scots pine that had to be pulled and dug out.

Its 200 acres spread out from a hilltop at 283 Providence Road, between Fenelon and Bobcaygeon, and includes pastures for his cattle, pigs, and chickens, a 60-tree mixed orchard planted down a slope, and a wetland area with a stream running through a corner of the property.

Pavan’s core belief is set out on his website: “The farm is an ecosystem, and any thriving system must have diversity and cooperation among its parts.”

The biodiversity is evident everywhere you look. Tree swallow and bluebird boxes are scattered around the orchard, for example, and comfrey serves as a living mulch around the trees.

His management of the chickens exemplifies his practices and their benefits.

The 70 laying hens are out in the pasture, housed in a coop on wheels surrounded by 100 feet of electric fencing. By day they’re outside; at night, they’re locked in the coop, safe from predators. The next morning, the fence and coop are moved to an adjacent space.

The hens feed on a nutritional mix of grains (rolled corn, barley, oats) and the field’s clover, grass and bugs. As they scratch, they’re breaking up thatch, aerating the soil, and bringing seeds to the surface. And, importantly, their manure feeds the grass (without burning, since the coop is moved each day).

In the winter the coop is attached to a large, heavily-mulched greenhouse (on a sled) in which the hens spend their days. As spring arrives, Pavan can plant squash and other heavy feeders in the well-manured spaces the greenhouse has occupied.

The meat birds are kept in a pasture as well, in a low-slung “Salatin-Style Chicken Tractor” enclosure on wheels that is moved three times a day so there’s more grass and bugs in their diet and because they produce more manure.

Because they’re pecking and scratching more aggressively than the laying hens, they do even more aerating of the soil and stir up different seeds.

It’s all healthy for the soil and plants and makes for eggs with rich orange yolks and broilers with yellow skin and flavorful flesh.

A Conservation Area Disc Golf Course As this issue of the Advocate was going to press Kawartha Conservation was preparing for the July 7th grand opening of a nine-hole disc golf course at its Ken Reid Conservation Area.

If you’re unfamiliar with disc golf, imagine frisbee-like discs thrown from a tee pad to a target, an elevated cylindrical basket strung with metal chains. The sport is easy to learn and can be played by all ages; discs can be borrowed from the Ken Reid Administration office or the Kawartha Lakes Public Library.

Why a disc golf course at a conservation area? “The role of conservation areas is to create opportunities to connect with nature in ways that are meaningful to the community,” explains Kristie Virgoe, director, stewardship and conservation area lands. “Disc golf is a great low-impact activity that attracts people to green spaces across Canada and it’s a great fit with our mandate”.

“Low impact” deserves explanation. Because, as the course designer has pointed out, “Golf is played on the ground; disc golf is played above it” there’s no need for manicured fairways and greens, no need for the watering and fertilizing required in what disc golfers refer to as “ball golf.”

To ensure their course was ultra-low impact, the authority commissioned an environmental impact study. Following its recommendation, no trees on the escarpment slope were removed and instead of poured concrete tee-pads, the designers set a thin artificial turf cover on soil, gravel and limestone screenings.

In completing a nine-hole round, players will experience wetlands, grasslands, escarpment, mixed forest and tree plantations.

If the goal is to immerse visitors in nature, this is a perfect activity: inevitably, as players learn to throw straight or curve shots left or right, they will be exploring the terrain up close as they seek out errant discs.

To further connect visitors to their surroundings each hole is paired with a bird or mammal species found in that habitat.

In addition to info on hole distance (which varies from 200 to 668 feet) and par (3-5) large signs at each tee educate about the animal. Some even make a connection between the animal and hole design.

Where else in Canada are you going to find a hole whose layout mimics the zygodactylic shape of a hairy woodpecker’s foot?

Falconry-based Bird Abatement Let there be no doubt about Zachary Steele’s love of birds.

He’s on the team spearheading efforts to earn Nature Canada’s Bird-Friendly City designation for Kawartha Lakes, and on Fleming College’s Bird Conservation Committee; his company, Kawartha Bird Control (KBC), treats windows to prevent bird collisions, and helps homeowners attract and support native bird species; he also partners with Bird-Friendly Peterborough on bird conservation workshops.

But Steele is keenly aware of the concept of “nuisance birds” – birds such as pigeons, starlings, Canada Geese, ring-billed and herring gulls – that can create headaches for businesses and homeowners.

Steele’s solutions call for an understanding of birds and bird behaviour and a tool-box of strategies that include auditory deterrents, rotating metal devices, removal of eggs, oiling of Canada Geese eggs (to prevent hatching), and pyrotechnics.

His favourite approach though, involves putting his Harris hawk and his gyr-peregrine falcon to work and employing techniques he’s been developing since joining the Ontario Hawking Club as a teenager.

He calls it “falconry-based bird abatement.” Last summer he was approached by a commercial tenant with a seagull problem. During the pandemic his building had been lying vacant for three years. Its flat roof was an ideal nesting spot so gulls had claimed the roof-top and laid eggs.

The accumulated acidic droppings were a health hazard.

(The rooftop wasn’t ideal for the gulls either, as Steele explains: “When they hatch out birds are flightless; if there’s nothing to keep them on the roof, juveniles fall off and die.”)

By the time Steele did his inspection there were three generations – roughly 600 gulls – colonizing the roof. “They’d won three battles” he says, “and they were trying to win the war.”

Steele’s work began in spring, prior to migration: the goal was to catch gulls as they were arriving and encourage them to nest elsewhere.

Choosing the right bird to employ was important. For, say a landfill site or flocks of starlings he would have employed his gyr-peregrine falcon. The falcon (trained with a leather lure swung in a circle to imitate a hunt) casts a silhouette over a large area as it flies its circular pattern.

For this job Steele wanted his Harris hawk. “Nothing shocks or surprises like a good Harris hawk,” he says. They socialize well and wouldn’t be distracted by dogs or people.

As well, they prefer warmer temperatures.

The hawk was released repeatedly, at different times of day and in different kinds of weather.

So far, the colony has been reduced by two-thirds and the birds haven’t reproduced, all from using birds to control birds. LA

Small is beautiful (And yes, size does matter) Fun fact: Canadians drive the largest, most gas guzzling vehicles in the world and produce the most emissions per km driven. That’s according to a 2019 report by the International Energy Agency. But by 2035, all new vehicles sold here will be electric. That should help the climate crisis, right?

Going from gas guzzling to electron guzzling won’t help us reduce electricity consumption, which we need to do to power all of those EVs. And the larger the vehicle, the bigger the battery, and the more natural resources it requires.

The battery alone of an electric Hummer weighs about the same as an entire Honda Civic. Because of its weight, to travel 100 km the Hummer EV burns through more than double the energy used by a smaller EV like the Chevy Bolt.

The bigger the electric truck or SUV, the more power it uses. A study in Science Direct found that for every one per cent increase in weight there’s a one per cent increase in electricity consumed.

The trend to larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks really took off after 2000. Vehicle manufacturers realized they could make more money selling megacars, in part because of something called the “light truck exemption” in the U.S. that meant SUVs and light trucks have lower fuel economy standards.

So, they ramped up marketing efforts. They convinced us that we need a big vehicle for all that off-roading on mountain trails that we do. In reality, most of us probably spend much more time carrying groceries, kids and their gear, or a briefcase. (Note: I am not talking about work trucks,

SUVs or vans.) All those lifestyle ads worked. Today “light trucks” – which include SUVs – make up 80 per cent of new car sales in Canada, up from about half of sales a decade ago.

That focus on megacars is continuing with electric vehicles.

GM recently announced that it is discontinuing production of the Chevy Bolt, its best-selling EV, by the end of the year. The company is going to concentrate its efforts on – you guessed it – making electric trucks.

People say they feel safer in a truck or SUV, so more buy them. While there is some truth to the safety factor – if a car collides with a truck, the truck generally wins – that’s not the case for a vehicle rollover. In that case, the driver of an SUV or truck is twice as likely to be killed.

And outside of that large vehicle, pedestrians are big losers.

They are two to three times more likely to die than if hit by a car. Bigger vehicles also have bigger blind spots, so alarms have been raised in the U.S. about increasing pedestrian deaths, including among youngsters. One study lined up children in front of a large SUV. The driver only saw the ninth child.

What’s a poor environmentally-conscious driver to do?

You can help with our energy evolution and save money by putting a smaller electric vehicle on your wish list. And maybe write GM and tell them what you think of them discontinuing the Bolt, which was rated the top EV of 2023

by Edmunds.

Remember, when it comes to vehicles, size does matter, and small is beautiful.

Old Home Week: Revisiting the reunions of 1924 and 1948 Three quarters of a century have passed since Lindsay’s last “Old Home Week.” This memorable community-wide reunion, which took place from July 1-10, 1948, was the second of two homecoming events organized by civic officials and local businesses in less than 25 years; the first took place in 1924. They were developed to bolster local tourism and commerce while renewing old acquaintances in a community that was still very much the epitome of small-town Ontario.

Organizers of the 1924 Old Home Week waxed eloquently about the significance of homecoming in their advertising.

“The ties that bind one to the old home are most sacred,” intoned copy in the July 2, 1924 edition of the Lindsay Daily Post, “and a visit to the old home in a week set apart as ‘Old Home Week’ when hundreds and thousands of others, the friends of other days, will gather likewise, makes an event that is very rare and one that will never be forgotten while memory lasts.”

This poignant invitation was surrounded by advertisements from enthusiastic merchants, who were no doubt anticipating a booming business on account of the 2,200 people who had registered for the reunion.

More solemn moments transpired at Lindsay Collegiate Institute on July 3, when Major-General Sir Arthur Currie unveiled a bronze plaque in memory of alumni who had made the supreme sacrifice during the Great War. Remembrance of dearly departed friends was a theme woven throughout the Old Home Week celebrations of 1924 – but so too was hope and optimism for the future.

Old Home Week, asserted the Post, “provided a demonstration of charity, concord and brotherly love that is bound to leave its impress on the community.”

Revellers descended on Lindsay from major urban centres such as Hamilton, London, Toronto, and Windsor – and even from as far away as Philadelphia. Cars filled all the main thoroughfares downtown, while private yards handled overflow traffic. Getting things underway on Dominion Day (July 1) was a spectacular “callithumpian parade” up Kent Street, featuring festively-decorated automobiles and floats numbering in the dozens. These were sponsored by a long list of local businesses – including Horn Bros.

The 1924 festivities offered residents and visitors alike much to see and do throughout town and at Exhibition Park, as the former Lindsay Fairgrounds was called then.

For 25 cents, one could enjoy a tattoo consisting of nine bands during the evening of July 3 – all culminating in an impressive display of fireworks at the exhibition grounds.

Those who missed the fireworks were no doubt recovering from the big dance held at the Armoury the night before, where more than 400 people gathered to cut a rug from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Made all the more merry thanks to Hal Rich’s Toronto-based orchestra, Old Home Week dances were organized under the auspices of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire and raised money in support of the Old Home Week Association.

Fifteen years of economic depression and worldwide warfare had passed by 1948, when local citizens past and present were once again invited to another Old Home Week.

Like its predecessor, the 1948 event was distinguished by the usual mix of dances, concerts, a “Miss Victoria” pageant, and other opportunities to reconnect with old friends – of which there were many. Among the 1,923 registrants were people from California, Detroit, England, Massachusetts, and Vancouver. In some cases, three or four decades had passed since they had last set foot in Lindsay. “Howard Elliott left here in 1920 and travelled all over the States,” reported the Post on July 7, 1948. “He says he has been in almost every State in the union and hasn’t seen any town nicer than Lindsay and he would still like to live here.”

Although organizers prepared an outstanding schedule of events and activities, Old Home Week of 1948 was not without its critics. A Post editorial on June 23, 1948 raised concerns about the lack of sufficient publicity two weeks ahead of the festivities – and in a July 7 letter to the editor, George W. Reeves questioned the wisdom of basing virtually the entire program at the fairgrounds.

“Who would ever think of taking the trouble of strolling all the way up to the fairgrounds just to sit in the grandstand for two or three hours and watch a performance, when the minds of the old boys and girls are set on renewing old acquaintances and making new friends?” Reeves asked.

(Similar criticisms filled editorial pages half a century later, when organizers of Lindsay’s Riverfest – which shared many of the same characteristics as Old Home Week – relocated the event from downtown to the fairgrounds, much to the chagrin of some local residents.)

Overall, however, Old Home Week of 1948 was deemed to be a success. “You will see over the door to our city hall a large key,” said Mayor Charles Lamb in welcoming “old boys and girls” back to Lindsay from near and far. “This key is a symbol indicating that the whole town is yours to enjoy. It is a large key, but not as large as the feeling of welcome in each of our hearts to you.” LA 41

1 bell pepper

1 tsp cumin

1 cup cherry tomatoes

1 tsp oregano

2/3 cup fresh cilantro

Dash of lime juice

RECIPE

LENTIL BEAN SALAD Bean salads are wonderful in the heat of summer when we want to avoid turning on our ovens.

This salad can be adapted to other fresh summer vegetables you have on hand, such as celery, or green onions. Pasta and crumbly cheese can also be added to make it an even heartier side, or even a light lunch by itself.

Rinse and drain lentils and black beans, and place in large bowl.

Dice the bell pepper, red onion, tomatoes, and any other vegetables you would like to add. Roughly chop the cilantro leaves, removing any large stems. Add vegetables to the bowl.

In a small bowl or jar, make the dressing. Add the Dijon mustard, cumin, oregano, and lime juice. Mince the garlic and add as well, then whisk dressing to combine.

Pour dressing over top and mix. Add more salt or lime juice if desired Serve immediately, or let it chill covered in the fridge for an hour or more to let the flavour combine further.

We have to grow up

It might be hard to imagine that the Walnut Grove apartment building, on Albert Street in Lindsay, was once a very controversial development.

There were concerns at the time — voiced forcefully but respectfully — that such a tall building would forever change the neighbourhood. Walk by it today and you see a nice building fitting in well with its surroundings.

It’s hard not to think about new buildings, where they should go and what the neighbours will think, driving around the city today.

Longtime Advocate readers will know that this growth has been planned for a long time. In a double feature story from our July 2019 issue, we reported that the population of Kawartha Lakes was expected to increase by 32 per cent, according to the provincial growth plan, by 2031.

Since that was published, the provincial government has accelerated the previously planned growth. Mayor Doug Elmslie acknowledged this at the recent mayoral luncheon, when he told attendees that Lindsay will double in size over the next 10-15 years.

That’s a lot of change coming — and it is coming fast. This should have each one of us, not to mention each organization, tackling the numerous questions that must be answered to deal with this change.

Do we want to be like Barrie — a city that just allowed suburban spread ending up in what some urban planners describe as an unlivable city? There is clearly consumer demand for the suburban sprawl-type developments.

But we do this at our medium and long term peril.

Sprawl growth, with its basis in car-culture, is the exact opposite way one should approach community design in a time of climate change (which will also bring incredible change). Not to mention that each extra kilometre of sprawl streets brings more expense in all municipal services and upkeep.

And you thought people complain a lot about their taxes now? Just wait.

And how do we make this a livable, healthy city? I have been in four different cities in the last month and it seems every city is planning for and improving bicycle transportation. Sadly, downtown missed that boat when it spent many years and millions of dollars and ignored this imperative.

Our city is already demographically changing, for the better in my opinion.

This will only increase given the projected growth. Are the police services and first responders and city planners working now to change the diversity of their workforce?

Are we ready for the results of school catchment reviews already on the way?

Most importantly, are we ready to grow up? Almost every urban planner knows that increasing density is the most cost-effective way to grow. Are we ready to have taller buildings? Are we ready to have historic facades with beautifully designed tall modern additions? Are we ready to clean up, and then build on contaminated brownlands?

It’s going to be a wild ride. Let’s keep our hopes up by looking up. lindsayadvocate.ca
