Bill 124 discriminates The Ontario government’s Bill 124 is wrong. It constitutes a practice of discrimination against female dominated health-care worker positions.

Bill 124 takes away workers’ rights to go to the bargaining table and negotiate their collective agreements and it limits collective agreements or arbitration awards to a total compensation of not more than one per cent a year for three years. Firefighters and police officers, being male dominated professions, are exempt from Doug Ford’s Bill 124. Health-care workers, being female dominated professions, are being abused. You called us heroes.

We are breaking our delicate ecosystem In the time I’ve lived in Canada (some 35 years now) I have noticed huge differences in the flora and fauna. The flocks of (literally) hundreds of birds that used to come to my country residence, yellow grosbeaks for instance, are now reduced to 20 or 30 on a good day. Driving around in the countryside, I no longer see the

We are losing our pollinators, our wildlife and all the eco-systems that support us due to unregulated poisoning of the water and air, as well as climate change. Unfortunately, electing people like Doug Ford and the Conservative Party, who want a massive unnecessary $6 billion highway when we already have one (Hwy. 407) that is underused due to mismanagement, who chase profit for themselves without any responsibility for actual costs, will only add to the climate breakdown. Without all those delicate ecosystems and pollinators, our ecosystem will break down even more, giving corporate farming more and more power over our food systems. Which, in many investors’ opinions, is a great thing (for them of course).

Life is expensive here, but worth it I could not agree more with letter writer Barry King (May edition

of the Advocate). My husband (a Canadian citizen) and I moved to Lindsay from the north of England in 2014. We love it here, but it is expensive, especially the water which is ridiculously priced and often not fit to drink. That said, when we came here it was a great deal cheaper than life in Britain and I love my neighbours, who are almost all incredibly kind and friendly. We wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, so we grit our teeth about the rapidly rising costs and, to use the Canadian vernacular, “suck it up.” ~ Wendy MacKenzie, Lindsay

Rotary helped broaden her horizons Re: “The Lindsay Rotary Club: 100 Years of Service,” in the May edition of the Advocate.

I too had the honour of being an exchange student to Nakskov, Denmark. It broadened my world view, let me learn and live a different culture, and led to a fondness for havarti cheese and Tuborg beer. I am lucky enough to still have friends there, and in the U.S.A., where most of the other students were from in my year.

Team Advocate It opened up the world to me and ignited a lifelong love of travel and discovery, ideally off the beaten path. It was a life-changing and enriching experience that I am grateful for every day.

New look reminds reader of Saturday Evening Post My first impression of the Advocate’s new look was that it reminded me of the Saturday Evening Post magazine from my youth (the 1960s were my teen years). It looks classy, has an artsy flair, and the photographic work of Mike Palmer has an inviting quality to the images he captures. Well done.

The theme of this issue, “Portraits of a Community,” seemed incomplete to me because there were no young tradesmen featured. These hard-working guys also face many challenges not unlike the young ladies who were featured. The absence of these men was conspicuous given that pickup trucks driven by tradesmen are ubiquitous in CKL. I particularly liked Ian McKechnie’s article with pictures and snippets of stories from the past. Maybe it’s because I am a senior who has

always been interested in people. I am endlessly fascinated by people — who they are now, what past influences shaped their current beliefs and circumstances, and how they have adapted over the years in response to the political, cultural, economic and technological forces surrounding them. ~ Gene Balfour, Fenelon Falls We agree that in our limited space, we couldn’t represent every aspect of life in Kawartha Lakes. He has released 11 albums of original music, has published an illustrated short story and is obsessed with buying musical instruments.

Currently employed as a senior manager at a local not-for profit, Trevor lives in Lindsay with his fiancée and three of their five kids. A Shakespeare and Wilco fan, he can rarely go three days without eating pizza.

The Lindsay + District Chamber of Commerce is hearing loud and clear that people are hungry for more outdoor festivals and activities.

That’s why, to celebrate the chamber’s 60th anniversary, the local non-profit will be hosting a “huge party” at Old Mill Park in Lindsay on July 31, according to executive director Allyssa Adams.

When pharmacist Cathy Puffer opened her own business in 2009 in downtown Lindsay, she says she set goals of providing outstanding professional pharmacy care and support throughout the community.

“It’s going to be a really exciting event. There will be fun activities for families, live music, local business vendors, food, art in the park and lots more,” says Adams.

Now, she’s handing the ownership and management of Remedy’sRx to Skyler Gopie, while she continues to maintain an active role at the store. Gopie has been with Remedy’s full-time for more than a year. He, along with Puffer and staff pharmacists Ellen Patterson and Clare Millington and the rest of the Remedy’s team, will be providing the same “excellence in service that patients have come to expect over the past 13 years,” according to Gopie.

Saying there’s something for everyone at the monthend party, she notes things get started at 10 am and will finish at 4 pm.

As the only compounding pharmacy in Kawartha Lakes, Remedy’sRx can prepare customized formulations of a medication to fit the unique needs of patients.

Whether you’re here for the summer or live here full time, there are some unofficial rules of the road to make note of in Kawartha Lakes. Consider this a survival guide to blend in better.

First, let’s tackle the Overly Helpful Pedestrian. You know the type. A man is about to cross the road on foot at a corner but then spots a car wanting to turn. The driver is patiently waiting; she knows the pedestrian has the right of way. But the Overly Helpful Pedestrian will have none of it.

He immediately goes into traffic cop mode and insists she turn first, in front of him. They play “no, you go” a couple of times to see who can out-Canadian the other.

Meanwhile the cars are piling up behind our driver and any new pedestrians who have arrived are trying to figure out what to do. (Made-up studies show many just give up and walk back home to avoid vehicular manslaughter.)

Signal lights are optional in Lindsay, Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon or really wherever you can find running cars.

Why signal when you can leave someone guessing as to your next move? Or consider the classic move of signalling left but then veering sharply to the right to execute the I-changed-

my-mind-where-I’m-going turn.

Most population centres in Kawartha Lakes have no real hills to speak of but that shouldn’t stop you from pumping those brakes as you near a green light because hey, it could be amber at any minute, right? Better I see those flashing brake lights for a half minute so we can both miss the green light. You know — the colour that means go-forthe-love-of-God. Then we have the unforgettable experience of approaching a four-way stop sign. This is the place where logic goes to die. In the place I like to call reality, the rule is the first vehicle to arrive gets to go first.

Here, a four-way stop can range from getting into a staring contest with other drivers, accelerating and then braking one second later, to watching more than one car proceed through the intersection like an automobile train.

The only thing worse?

When the Overly Helpful Pedestrian comes upon a four-way stop and starts directing traffic.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: in time * * crossword * * just Municipal government matters.

A lot.

Just think about the things that affect you and your family every single day. Roads, libraries, police, garbage, community MY CARD * * HERE’S centres, paramedics, parks, agriculture, museums, fire services, s take *snow removal, recycling, economic development, Victoria Manor, zoning — we could go on for a long time. But we’d rather talk about the kinds of people we want to see looking * then & now * after these critical elements of life in Kawartha Lakes.

Forget about political parties and labels. The people whose names will appear on the ballot this October are our neighbours. And neighbours need to work together, regardless of their political leanings, for the good of the whole * lunch with * community. Here’s what we at the Advocate want to see from the candidates running for mayor, council and school boards: 1. Demonstrate integrity. The way you deal with others in your life outside the council chambers, whether atreads work, * * great while volunteering or personally, is the most important indicator of whether you can and should be trusted to help lead Kawartha Lakes.

2. Be in favour of things. It’s easy to be benns’ against everything. belief * * We need collaborators much more than we need more critics.

3. Base decisions on verifiable facts rather than ideology, opinion or personal impressions. Set aside preconceptions, trust experts and other credible sources, and be prepared to trevor’s take * change your mind when you learn new* information.

4. Put the city as a whole first. Of course you should speak for residents in your ward. But focusing on your backyard means you never take the road to a vibrant future.

Be a champion for a common vision: the good of everyone in a strong, innovative, compassionate Kawartha Lakes.

5. Be a good colleague. If you must criticize others, even your opponents, stick to their record and their platform and avoid personal attacks. In office, respect those you disagree with; you’re all working in your own way for the public good.

Lilac lack despite city promise to maintain * editorial * For many years the Lilac Gardens of Lindsay were a beautiful place to visit around the end of May. Volunteers weeded the lovely flower beds, trimmed the many varieties of lilacs and updated the seating areas in the vine-covered bower. * crossword *

Bus tours came to enjoy tours led by hosts to learn about the different varieties as well as enjoying the colours and perfumes. For a few years there was a tented area for visitors to have tea in the garden. This was served by ladies in long dresses, delivering tea in delicate china cups along with scones with lemon curd or jam. Many people paid to have a lilac of choice planted and would put a stone in front of it to recognize an event.

When the city took over the park, they promised to keep those on the memorial walk and bring them back. This was done in part last year with small new lilacs. This year when I toured to see if they were growing and blooming, I found at least three-quarters of them dead and only a patch of weeds behind the stones.

The Liberal-NDP agreement: What’s all the fuss? * editorial * * great reads *

Less than four months ago, Canada’s governing Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party announced an agreement for the remainder of the 44th Parliament. In its broad strokes, it is quite simple. The NDP agrees to support the Liberal Party in confidence votes, thus guaranteeing the *survival ofbelief the Liberal government untilcrossword the next scheduled election in October 2025. benns’ * *

As the Liberals only won a minority government in 2021, it was possible for opposition parties to outvote them in confidence motions, sending us back to the polls.

In return, the NDP secured two campaign promises: * trevor’s take * the passage of national pharmacare legislation by the end of 2023 and the launch of a dental care program for low-income Canadians. (There are other parts to the agreement but these two get the most attention.)

There are two questions to address to judge this agreement. First, is the process above-board? Does it fall within acceptable parliamentary practice in Canada? Second, what does universal dental care and pharmacare mean for Canadians?

Our parliamentary system is fashioned after the British Westminster model. So, a government is recognized only after it secures the confidence of a majority of MPs in the House of Commons. That government can either be a single party that wins a majority or more than one party forming a coalition or an agreement. In the past seven Parliaments we have had only two majority governments: the Conservatives in 2011 and the Liberals in 2015. Minority governments must accommodate the wishes of other parties to stay in power. This is not unusual in Canada. We’ve seen agreements between parties in B.C. in 2017 and in Ontario in 1985. Our health care system was a product of an agreement between the Lester Pearson Liberals and the NDP of Tommy Douglas in the mid-1960s.

What about the actual content, the agreement to expand socialized dental and pharmacare programs? A core function of government in Canada is to develop and implement social and political policy that is in tune with Canadian values and with public opinion.

It is no great secret that a significant majority of Canadians consistently support a public health care system where access is not determined by ability to pay. An October 2020 Angus Reid poll discovered that almost 90 per cent of Canadian supported a public pharmacare program.

A 2019 Ipsos poll indicated that 86 per cent of Canadians support publicly funded dental care.

In other words, the concept of Medicare remains incomplete without these two add-ons.

Unfortunately, Canada has an electoral process that emphasizes parties over policies. In our (let’s hope) post-pandemic world, it’s time we turn our focus to matters of social policy.

The Angus Reid poll cited above sadly discovered that 23 per cent of Canadians did not fill prescriptions because of lack of funds. Clearly, their health does not matter less than the health of the 77 per cent of Canadians who filled their prescriptions.

What do we expect from our government? Like most Canadians, I expect the provision of equal access to health care, in all its forms.

Hit the road – but don’t advertise it Lisa and Bryan Moores of Lindsay recently went on an 11-day sojourn to Ireland. Lisa took her 500 or so Facebook friends along for the trip via her photos of and commentary on castles, pubs, restaurants and spendy stores, like Louis Vuitton and Chanel.

The couple’s adult daughter lives with them and was home from work in the evenings and weekends, leaving their home vulnerable during the day. Fortunately, no one broke in. Lisa says she does not think she would change a thing on their next trip. “My social media is pretty private,” she said, adding, “I am not too concerned. I’m lucky someone is usually here and great neighbours keep their eyes and ears open.”

Not everyone is so lucky, but being sensible about the clues you leave for others can deter thieves while you’re on holiday. The biggest culprit? Posting photos of your fabulous holiday hijinks on social media.

While the pictures may generate likes and comments from friends and family, it also lets thieves know you are away. Advertising on social media that you are on holiday is like placing a sign on your front lawn telling everyone your house is empty.

Along with keeping your vacation pictures off social media while you’re away, said Kawartha Lakes Police Service Constable Paul Hatton, it’s important to use your social media on a limited setting, so only your friends and family can see what you post.

Are there people on your friends list you have never met? It is a good idea to remove them. A friend request from a stranger or that casual acquaintance may not be all it seems. There’s no way to really verify someone’s identity online.

There is another way thieves can find out you are not home — through location services, said Hatton.

“If you’ve got this on and linked to your social media, it will post the location of exactly where you are.”

Posts or photos that have location services enabled may tag you, letting others know not just that you are away, but where you are. Adjusting your settings on social media so you are not automatically tagged, along with requesting to review any tags, will help reduce the risk.

In the real world, if your mailbox is overflowing with mail, newspapers and flyers, it is giving away you are not home, said Hatton. “Get your neighbour to collect these for you.”

Have fun while you’re away but take some common-sense measures to protect your home so you don’t come back to a nasty surprise.

You can have your mail held while away. For a fee, Canada Post will keep it in your absence and deliver it upon your return. Cheryl MacMillan works at the Lindsay Canada Post depot. It is a double bonus to put a hold on your mail as your carrier knows you are away.

“Your carrier is another set of eyes for your home. If they notice something is not right, they let management know.” That manager can in turn call the authorities, she added.

Of course, determined thieves can thwart the best-intentioned preparations. When planning for a vacation, Maryon Allen is serious about details. She and her husband and two children took many week-long trips to Delawana Resort in Muskoka. She asked her brother to stop by daily to check on the house, collect mail and 16

papers and to report anything suspicious. The lights were on timers and the grass was freshly cut. She even refrained from posting vacation pictures online.

Police would say she did everything right, But their Lindsay home was burgled anyway. Allen said she felt violated. “Even though they weren’t destructive, it’s unsettling to know someone has been in your house.”

Her husband couldn’t sleep, and she was concerned about something she had heard: that thieves would come back and hit the home again, knowing the couple may have replaced the stolen items with insurance money. This was enough to persuade the couple to have a monitored alarm system installed.

Monitored alarms are the best way to protect your home or business, according to Marlene Morrison Nicholls, president and CEO of Stewart Morrison Insurance.

Constable Paul Hatton’s tips to protect your home and property while away Install a trail cam inside your home if you can’t afford a monitored alarm system. These are inexpensive and will capture photos of anyone in your abode while you are away.

A standard locking pin on sliding doors is usually cast metal, which is weak and easily broken. To prevent the door from being forced open, add a snug-fitting section of hockey stick to the track.

Ask your neighbours to park their second car in your driveway and to put their trash in front of your house on collection day.

Store your car keys well away from the door and out of sight.

“Many people install Google cameras, but these are just monitored by the homeowner and so do not provide any discount on your insurance. An alarm must be monitored and connected to both fire and police.”

“Insurance companies here could not impose restriction of coverage because someone posted a vacation photo,” says Morrison Nicholls, but says “posting photos online while away is not the best practice.”

Have fun while you’re away but take some commonsense measures to protect your home so you don’t come back to a nasty surprise. It’s also important to keep an eye out for your neighbours while they’re away, which makes the whole area safer.

Install solid exterior doors, not hollow ones.

Doors are one of the weak spots thieves look for. Cheap locks can be easily broken, so deadbolts are a must.

Lock all garage and shed doors.

Arrange for your grass to be cut and snow to be removed if you are away for a week or more. Cleaning up unkempt gardens and fallen leaves makes your home look lived in.

The traditional workplace setting isn’t exactly destined to go the way of the dodo, but it certainly is experiencing an evolution that appears to be permanent.

COVID-related issues pushed a large number of people into work-from home settings in the past couple of years. Add in the rising costs of renting or owning office buildings, and many people are evaluating just how practical it is to set up shop in a basement, a spare bedroom or even on the kitchen table.

Whether spurred by creativity, necessity or COVID, tangible solutions to challenges for businesses of all shapes and sizes have emerged in the past few years right here in Kawartha Lakes, and they appear to be here to stay.

“This is all about adapting to changing or emerging business needs,” says Ramona Kozak, co-owner of the Lindsay Business Hub along with her husband Larry. “I’m just listening to what I think is a need in our community.”

The Business Hub, at 1 Russell St. E. in Lindsay, is filled to capacity with a range of clients who have rental agreements of varying lengths to suit their needs. The Hub’s dozen offices are home to legal professionals, counsellors, financial advisers and real estate agents. It’s so busy, in fact, that Kozak sees a need for expansion in the near future.

The Hub has been operating for about a year and has been welcomed by a variety of clients seeking office space in a professional setting, without the need for an entire building — let alone the additional costs and responsibilities associated with such occupancy, such as utilities and insurance.

Call it coworking, flex space or hybrid offices. It means something a bit different for every client or user, but that is a key to the concept’s success and its future growth. It may also be an ideal solution for businesses with employees wanting to operate professionally in rural settings such as Kawartha Lakes.

Open since April, Thrive Coworking Community also offers all the facilities and related amenities of a professional office, without the long-term expenses and responsibilities associated with such an operation.

In the past couple of pandemic-influenced years, many people have discovered that working from home has positives, but is not without its downfalls, says Thrive’s Matt Geraghty.

He and his wife Meg Geraghty opened Thrive in downtown Lindsay at 18 Kent St. W. when they identified that many people were operating businesses such as digital marketing from their homes. They add that COVID accelerated the need for coworking space such as Thrive.

The idea of doing business a bit differently emerged barely a decade ago in New York City, when a large contingent of professionals were feeling cramped and in need of more space – but not necessarily enamoured with the idea of buying or renting entire buildings. The key to flex space’s success is designing an exciting place for people and companies to come together to share operating expenses, and to have a “community” feel. After all, working from home doesn’t provide many “water cooler” social opportunities with others.

The concept isn’t just suited to a large metropolitan centre.

In fact, Geraghty emphasizes that he feels it’s an ideal approach to doing business in the rural settings that make up such a large portion of this sprawling city.

“Spotty rural internet in Lindsay and across Kawartha Lakes is frustrating and not productive,” says Geraghty. “And while many people from outside of our area are fortunate to have a cottage to spend time at in the summer, they all don’t take the entire summer months off.”

During an Advocate photo shoot, Dr. Brandy Schillace from Euclid, Ohio, happened to walk into Thrive, looking for a spot to work for the afternoon. Just passing through, the author, podcaster and editor-in-chief of the Medical Humanities Journal was looking for a comfortable place with good wifi.

Geraghty says people often need a more professional setting from which to conduct their business. Thrive means they don’t have to set up office space at a family cottage, but they can have a professional meeting here in town when they need to do so, he says.

For Kozak, it’s all “privacy and professionalism” at the Lindsay Business Hub. “Many of our clients are actually from out of town, such as lawyers who may come to Lindsay to work on a court case for a few days or weeks. They appreciate having an office to set up from, rather than in a motel or coffee shop.” The building is secure, with alarms, security cameras and unique access codes that let clients use their offices at any time of the day or night.

The same is true for Thrive, which directs much of its marketing to professionals in metropolitan areas who come to Kawartha Lakes to visit family or to vacation.

“Summer will see many people coming to the area for blocks of time, but they may still need to be working at least some of the time. So, they can have our facilities and services here, which the family cottage likely doesn’t offer,” Geraghty says.

Kozak points out that Business Hub clients are also able to use the site as their business mailing office. Mail is kept for them at the central front desk and clients drop in regularly to pick up messages and items.

The concept attracts a variety of users because of its flexible nature.

Entrepreneurs just trying to get their financial footing prefer it over committing to long-term leases and rental agreements. Perhaps surprisingly, many established professionals also like the option of a different workspace outside of the traditional office that is busy with other colleagues.

Thrive client Brian Rump, a local small business adviser who owns Profit Coach, stresses that work environment is a very important factor in doing good work for anyone, regardless of the business size.

“Thrive is a space that just feels great to work in. The design is nice, the coffee is outstanding and being able to interact with other professionals building businesses is an added bonus.”

Rump thinks once others check it out they will be able to imagine better what they could do with their business in such an environment.

The advantage for clients is that Lindsay Business Hub and Thrive offer users a turnkey operation the minute they walk in. The facilities have all of the amenities and support associated with a professional business setting, including technological connectivity, printing stations, private office space and larger board rooms for group meetings. There are flexible lease and rental levels for short and long-term users, professional support staff, kitchen and washroom facilities, and custodial services. Geraghty, a marketing expert himself, is particularly excited about Thrive’s room dedicated for podcasting.

Lost in Ontario’s 2022 budget, released just days before the provincial election campaign officially began, was acknowledgement of the growing coworking movement. The budget tabled on May 1 contained plans to design, test and implement coworking spaces in smaller cities and towns for some Ontario Public Service (OPS) employees, as well as making better use of government-owned offices.

A hybrid OPS workplace environment would reduce transportation congestion, contribute to environmental conservation and reduce future real estate costs while maintaining excellence in the delivery of services, the Ontario 2022 budget stated.

To further enable people to live and work in their communities, the Conservative government said it would consider placement of co-working spaces for employees in several Ontario cities outside the Greater Toronto Area.

“These are important elements in the design of hybrid workplaces that will help to attract the best and the brightest talent. Providing functional workspaces in multiple communities increases accessibility and flexibility for employees while also maintaining excellence in service delivery.”

Roderick Benns No sooner has Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” started up* when Michele Kennedy trevor’s take *walks through the door. I try to read the tea leaves on that one but come up short. I have no idea if this interview will be enjoyable for her, considering she almost turned me down.

The 56-year-old architectural designer is on time at The Pie Eyed Monk, her striking, reddish-auburn hair her most defining feature — not unlike that of a Jersey cow. (The only reason I feel empowered, as a man, to make such a comparison is because Jersey is her official nickname.)

“It’s challenging to talk about yourself,” she says, admitting her first instinct was to reject the idea of talking about herself publicly. She orders a gin and tonic and so I join her with a cream ale.

“I struggled with self-confidence my whole life, so to do something like this is a big deal for me.”

Kennedy is concerned her life will sound like “an episode of Maury Povich.”

That’s when I decide to start off with an easy question — ”Where were you born?” — so I can ease her into the process.

Perhaps that was an error if I was going for easy.

As it turns out, she was born in Toronto to a mother who was pregnant but unmarried — not ideal in 1960s Little Britain, especially since her dad was a minister.

Her mom was sent to a home in Toronto for unwed mothers, where she gave birth and put Kennedy up for adoption.

Michele Kennedy didn’t start out wanting to be an architectural designer.

Her mother was in nursing school when the pregnancy and subsequent birth derailed her education plans.

Here’s where Maury Povich vibes come in, according to Kennedy.

About two days after Kennedy was born, her mother was talking to the nurses. They had taken her baby away right after it was born, which was customary at the time when an adoption was chosen.

But these particular nurses wanted to give the young mother a chance to see her newborn and sneaked her into the nursery. After seeing her infant, Kennedy’s mother called her sister and pleaded with her for her help, so she could bring baby Michele home. Her sister, Beverly, was more established —a married teacher with two kids of her own — and agreed to the arrangement.

“Mom cancelled the adoption, took me to her house and raised me there while my aunt could do her teaching,” says Kennedy, eyes welling up.

Her mother and father did get married two years later. Kennedy grew up on a dairy farm in the village and found she loved the community spirit that she believes especially infused Little Britain in the 1960s and 70s.

Kennedy said they were relatively poor, not being able to take family vacations or have fancy clothes. It was those “little things you judge yourself on,” she said, returning to the self-confidence theme.

However, in retrospect she believes her childhood was better off forsaking Disney World for frequent picnics in the park, snowmobiling and community sports. “I know now it’s the small, local things that really matter.”

Our server takes our order. It’s a mushroom pizza for Kennedy and a half-size grilled cheese, bowl of corn chowder soup and a garden salad for me.

“Even as a kid I had a hard time eating animals,” she says, referring to her vegetarian choice. She said she has never eaten a chicken wing or leg in her life, although she’d eat a hamburger when she was a kid, mainly because the burger “doesn’t look like any particular part of the animal.”

Her dairy farm upbringing meant she spent a lot of time with the reddish-brown cows and people soon started calling her Jersey.

“I hated having red hair growing up — it was one more thing that affected my self-confidence. Now I have hairdressers ask me what ‘number’ my hair is,” referring to dye.

Kennedy was a Mariposa Elementary School grad, then went on to LCVI. She had no interest in high school and didn’t excel academically. Kennedy found the social scene at school — especially “judgmental girls” her own age — made it a difficult time.

computer-aided design and drafting software – through Fleming College. After getting this certification she stumbled upon an advertisement from a company looking for someone to help design dairy milking systems.

“I went right over and told them my nickname was Jersey, and that I had just finished the AutoCAD program,” she says.

They hired her right away and it seemed apt that Jersey’s first job with her new certification would be designing milking systems for a dairy barn.

Kennedy began working with the engineers and learning from them. She took home and studied every drawing she could find.

With that experience under her belt she later applied to Viceroy Homes. The company hired her immediately; she learned to ask a lot of questions early on and then had a decade-long career with the home builder.

“But in my mind I kept thinking I’d save money and go to school and get a real job,” she recalls, because the position didn’t pay as much as she felt she needed to earn.

As our food arrives, she says it took her a long time to be clear in her mind that this was a genuine career. “I finally started enjoying it when I realized I didn’t have time to go to school.”

In January 2017, an unexpected opportunity presented itself.

Her cousin, an animal welfare activist, met a woman in Thailand.

The two of them began to operate numerous elephant sanctuaries and he pushed Kennedy to come over for an extended visit.

At the time she wanted to leave a lot of relationship and family turmoil behind and took them up on their offer. She spent a month in the northern part of the Asian nation, calling it “heavenly” in the secluded mountains.

Her average marks affected her self-esteem and so she never went to university, assuming she would not succeed. “To me, that was for the smart people. In high school I passed but didn’t excel,” even though she was on an enriched track, which was a university pathway at the time.

Not getting a diploma or degree has “bothered me my whole life.”

I point out she has still managed to have a successful career as an architectural designer, and she said that came from “determination,” given her life circumstances.

In her 30s Kennedy was a mail carrier for Canada Post. But a subsequent car accident meant she couldn’t deliver mail any longer and she had to find something else to do, given she was a single parent.

“I had three kids to feed and I wondered what I was going to do.”

That’s when she took a half-year AutoCAD program – essentially 30

“It was so lovely to be around so many like-minded people.” She fed the numerous animals at the sanctuary each day and helped with other chores.

Her business steadily grew and then COVID hit — and then the business grew more. People were leaving the city and planning their new homes or upgrading their cottages.

Her three kids are all doing well. One daughter owns her own cleaning business. Another daughter is a nurse and her son is in the Canadian Armed Forces. She spends lots of time with her grandkids who keep her busy, which she finds fulfilling.

Over the years Kennedy read a lot of self-help books and took some Tony Robbins courses. “I don’t tell myself anymore that I’m uneducated or not good enough. I’ve had to change the reel that used to play in my head.”

This architectural designer may not have chosen to fashion her life exactly the way it unfolded, but in the end, she’s finally at peace knowing along the way she built something worthwhile not only for her family, but for herself, too.

With her kids fully launched, she says, life feels lighter. And just as the song promised when she walked in, she admits she might even be ready to have a little more fun.

Lindsay man tapped for Canadian task force on supply chain issues Roderick Benns Lindsay resident Bob Armstrong will join a task force created by the federal government to help alleviate supply chain issues.

Armstrong – with five decades of experience across all aspects of logistics, transport, and supply chains — joins Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra’s National Supply Chain Task Force at a time when the global system is under pressure from the pandemic, climate change, and international conflicts.

“Bob is an inspired choice for this challenging honour,” says Paul Miller, chair of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in North America. Armstrong also serves as the institute’s president.

Armstrong spent many years in senior management with the supply chain and logistics industry, a government relations company, and a public accounting firm, where he was a partner.

His other activities include Chairman of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Treasurer of the Hong Kong Canada Business Association, and Member of the Goods Movement Roundtable for Peel Region. On a more local note, he is a past president of the Lindsay + District Chamber of Commerce and a board member of The Academy Theatre.

“I look forward to meeting Canadian companies across Canada and listening to their supply chain challenges,” Armstrong tells the Advocate.

He says it’s imperative the task force recommends solutions for federal and provincial governments and industry to adopt “and get our supply chain out of the mess it is in.”

This includes improving the reliability and efficiency of the delivery of goods to foreign and domestic customers, says Armstrong.

The National Supply Chain Task Force will provide independent advice to the minister in the form of interim and final reports.

Small card is a gateway to a large world, says Bobcaygeon-area man “This is the most important card in my wallet,” the man announced, casually and matter-of-factly, to Lynn, the staffer at the Bobcaygeon library, as she checked out his regular haul of books.

It’s not an uncommon remark from local patrons — “we get it a lot,” Lynn says — especially in a small community whose de facto epicentre is often the library. But, she says, “This one stood out as he explained how his own history with libraries went so far back. It spoke to his own development as a person.”

Hugh Morshead insists he wasn’t exaggerating that day, even proclaiming that this thin plastic card is as vital to him as the ID he obtained as a landed immigrant. When he arrived in Canada from Ireland as a young adult, he was, by his own admission, untrained and had no formal education. But he could read — and so devoured books.

“Every Saturday I would go to the library and take out six books.” “I’d read them and totally self-teach on every subject,” says Morshead, who’s on the shadier side of 60 but looks to be on its sunnier side.

“With a library card,” he continues, “I could pick up a book, learn from it and make money. Or benefit my life in some way.”

It’s hard not to be convinced of his conviction.

Even when Morshead is not specifically talking books, the conversation often seems to underscore some measure of their lindsayadvocate.ca

influence on his everyday life.

“We’re now heading into the fairy zone,” he says, leading the way along one of many wending paths on his 19-acre bush property about 20 kilometres north of his favourite library. “And here we are,” he announces, stopping in front of one of several yurts he’s constructed in the 12 years since he built an off-the-grid, rudimentary but welcoming homestead here.

No surprise that each yurt features a mini library, often populated with books that guests have pilfered from his own large library at the main house. (Only friends and acquaintances seeking some solace or respite stay in the yurts; he doesn’t rent out these unique, cozy units.)

Morshead, however, doesn’t call it a yurt; he prefers “hobbit house,” a nod to J.R.R. Tolkien. And in yet more deference to the esteemed fantasy author, a wooden plaque on Morshead’s front gate reads, “Hobbit Land.”

It’s all fitting, really, given what defines — and drives — Morshead, whose attire (Tilley hat, rumpled cotton shirt, khaki pants) would allow him to blend in nicely as one of the human citizens amongst the elves and dwarves of Tolkien’s Middle Earth.

As Morshead showcases the interior of the largest yurt — er, hobbit house — pointing to everything from the earth-wall construction, the tea candle that (somehow) generates electricity and the embedded clear Pyrex oven dish that serves as a window, he’s asked if his background is in engineering, or construction.

“No,” he responds sharply. “It’s in books.”

Indeed, his first hobbit house was inspired

by Earthbag Building, a book he found at the Lindsay library.

But most of his working life was spent around horses, whether as a jockey or designing equestrian jumps and courses.

(Of course, work is a term he’d be loath to use, since he boasts of having retired at age 17, then travelling and eventually living five different lives, which included a 22year marriage and two now-adult sons.)

The two worlds — books and horses — converged when he authored a how-to book, now in its second printing, on building cross-country equestrian courses.

Morshead is now retired — or, rather, not in dire need of generating income. He says he’s financially comfortable, a status no doubt enabled by an uber-simple lifestyle where he consumes little that he doesn’t grow or manufacture on his own.

Books taught him how to garden and

even build a root cellar. But it’s not all just about higher learning or deep thinking.

For instance, he’s reading a biography on Jann Wenner, the creator of Rolling Stone magazine. And then there’s the book about England’s last 60s-era hippie, which he discovered at the Fenelon branch. “I thought ‘this has got to be a mistake!’” he beams about the surprising discovery in such a tiny library.

Following the breakup of his marriage (“we’re still very good friends”) there was more opportunity to travel, which he does frequently. In keeping with the eco-friendly lifestyle he espouses, those trips typically involve 100-kilometre per day cycling tours in places like Patagonia.

But books, and their impact, are always close. “I could live in any country really, really easily… The knowledge goes with me,” he says, pulling out his slightly tattered library card from his wallet.

“With this I can do anything.”

Here, Morshead pauses, as though trying to remember the exact words to a favourite passage from a favourite book, then adds, “It’s my free ticket.”

It’s a Plastic World Cleaning out my parents’ house a couple of years ago, I found my child-sized wooden kitchen cupboard. My dad had kept it to store nails and screws. That got me thinking about the large, all-plastic kitchen and workshop play sets we picked up for our daughter years ago. They will last too, but not in a good way. Long after the wooden set has biodegraded, those plastic play sets will be with us for hundreds more years. And in some form, possibly forever.

Plastic lasts. Items can take up to 1,000 years to break down according to the United Nation’s Environmental Program. And when they do, they just degrade into tinier and tinier bits of plastic — nothing nature recognizes. I’ve read that every piece of plastic manufactured since 1907 is still out there, somewhere.

Where? Studies have found microplastics in air, in ground water, in rainwater, in fish, in our food — even in beer.

And it’s turning up in the human body in placentas, in lungs, in blood.

We’ve known for years that plastic is killing marine life.

But researchers are just beginning to look at the potential harms to us. The main ingredients of most plastic come from crude oil and natural gas — nothing that belongs in the human body.

We’re going to need some plastics, granted. Medical products, bicycle helmets, some car parts and electronics might be hard to replace with non-plastic equivalents. But in general, we know we must seriously scale it back.

Recycling doesn’t cut it. Nationwide only about nine per cent of plastic is recycled. Canadian government figures show that in 2016 approximately 29 million kg entered our environment as plastic pollution.

So what can we do?

Say no to single-use plastics.

Take those reusable bags to the grocery store, take your own coffee mug to the drive-through, pack a “to-go” bag in the car for takeout. Turn down offers of plastic cutlery, containers and straws. Note that a federal ban on these plastics could be in place by the end of 2022.

Shop at stores like Unwrapped in Lindsay or The Green Tree Frog in Bobcaygeon.

Both promote waste-free shopping and offer eco- friendly products in refillable containers, as does Country Cupboard Health Food Store in Fenelon Falls. Other stores such as Burns Bulk Food also allow customers to refill their own containers.

Choose non-plastic alternatives.

You can buy bamboo toothbrushes and even silk dental floss instead of nylon, which is essentially plastic. When buying a shovel or broom, look for metal or wood with natural fibres for the broom head. When non-plastic alternatives aren’t available, opt for items containing recycled plastic.

Push for strong government plastics policies.

In addition to single-use plastic bans, governments could require new plastic products to contain considerable recycled plastic, phase out non-recyclable plastics, and put more onus on manufacturers to reduce and recycle their plastics.

To its credit, Kawartha Lakes has introduced a plastics recycling program for large items such as plastic garbage cans and lawn furniture. But not that large toy kitchen set. At least, not yet.

PEDALLING TO PENIEL

Hamlets of s e k a L a h t r a w Ka In the closing lines of the musical Les Misérables, Valjean, Fantine and Eponine sing one of the most remarkable lines in musical theatre: “To love another person is to see the face of God.” A little over 80 years after the events depicted in Les Mis, France had become enmeshed in the First World War. Wounded soldiers gazing into the eyes of Nursing Sister Winnifred Ethel Hardy, saw, if not the face of God, then certainly a face of kindness and compassion. The nursing sisters were, after all, known as “angels of mercy” and their ministrations won the love and respect of their patients.

In reflecting on the relationship between Canada’s nursing sisters and servicemen during that conflict, this line from Les Mis is powerfully evocative.

It seems fitting, then, that Winnifred Hardy (1889-1978) was born and raised in Peniel, Ontario — a tiny crossroads community some 20 kilometres northwest of Lindsay, so named for a Hebrew word that means “the face of God.” Peniel (pronounced with a long i, as in “mile,” and the emphasis on the second syllable: peh-NY-al) is my destination on an unseasonably hot Saturday. The apple blossoms are in full bloom, and the verdant leaves are once more gracing the maple trees I pass as I make my way east along bumpy Peniel Road. A pair of cows looks at me suspiciously as I pedal past one of the many farmsteads sporting tree-lined lanes and cedar-rail fences.

It’s about 1:20 p.m. when I reach Peniel proper. I have made arrangements to have a personal tour of Peniel United Church at 2 p.m. but first I turn south and head in the direction of Quaker Road.

There, on the northeast corner of the latter and County Road 46, is the brick schoolhouse known

variously as Cedar Grove School, Peniel School and Wylie’s School. Built in 1888, it was heated by a woodstove until 1967. This charming school served local students until 1972 and is now a private home.

I look both ways, cross the highway, and head back towards the church. It’s well past lunchtime, so I stop at the side of the road and clamber down into the ditch for a picnic consisting of ham and turkey sandwiches, bran muffins, fruit and a refreshing can of carbonated water. It hits the spot, though it’s a far cry from what was enjoyed at a garden party held at the nearby Osborne farm almost 125 years before. As the Peniel correspondent reported in the July 15, 1898 edition of the Canadian Post, “a spirited program warendered, and the ladies had prepared a grand spread, consisting of cakes, coffee, and other luxuries, which would do honour to any caterer in the city.”

I finish my lunch and after watching young carp zip through the little brook in front of me, head back up to the roadside.

Within minutes, I pass the stately red-brick house which in 1910 replaced an earlier building on George and Annie Hardy’s farm. Numbering among the seven Hardy children were Winnifred, who in 1916 graduated from the Ross Memorial Hospital’s nursing program, and William George Hardy (1895-1979), who was awarded several scholarships at the University of Toronto and went on to become a prolific scholarly writer. Hardy’s dissertation, Greek Epigrammatists at Rome in the First Century B.C., earned him a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1922 and he spent over four decades in the Department of Classics at the University of Alberta.

For the Hardys and other Peniel-area families, the church was quite literally the centre of their community. Built in 1913 to replace an earlier edifice blown down during a windstorm, Peniel United Church originally served a Methodist congregation. Today, it is one of six churches forming the United Community Ministry. Although its tin ceiling hasn’t echoed with the sound of song since pre-pandemic times, this spacious church continues to enrich the lives of residents through a number of events — not least monthly euchre nights and the annual Paddle the Drain canoe regatta, which sees participants

paddle down a drainage ditch winding its way through local farms.For more than a century, the annual church run dinner has ranked high on Peniel’s social calendar. On Nov. 5, 1914, the Watchman-Warder reported that “the hot fowl supper served on the prettily decorated and well-laden tables was enjoyed by a very large number, while the auditorium was thronged with people, even the steps and basement being called into service to hold those who otherwise could not have heard the lecture and music given.”

Growing up, Evelyn Chambers joined her fellow parishioners in preparing the suppers. “We had no running water here at the church, so those that had cream cans brought water in cream cans and we heated it up with Coleman stoves, and that’s how we cooked stuff,” she tells me as I’m shown through the church’s basement, where generations have feasted over convivial conversation.

“I can remember being here until 11 o’clock at night, still serving people,” Chambers recalls.

Serving people. From comforting the sick in a hospital during the First World War to plating pies in the church kitchen at fowl suppers, Peniel’s residents past and present have long been the face of duty, neighbourliness and hospitality.

Roasting in the Oven “My question is about the roast option in ovens.

Why do we bake when a recipe refers to roasting?

This has perplexed me for years. My experience is that when I roast, whatever I’m cooking dries out too much. – Brenda Devine Dear Brenda, In answer to the first part of your question ... The meaning for both baking and roasting, in Webster’s dictionary, is the same: “to cook (meat etc.) by dry heat, as in an oven.” Originally roasting was “to cook (meat etc.) over an open fire or in hot ashes etc.” I couldn’t discover when roasting came to mean a large chuck of meat baked in an oven.

Food being prepared in the oven, whether meat, vegetables or baked goods, smells so good. It’s definitely worth fine-tuning oven skills. The most accurate way to check doneness is to use an oven thermometer.

There are a number of reasons for roasted meat to be dry:

The temperature is incorrect.

The meat has been cut incorrectly by the cook.

The cooking time has been too long or the cut of meat is too small.

The meat hasn’t been allowed to rest properly after it is removed from the oven.

The wrong cut of meat has been used.

The roasting pan is too large for the cut of meat.

I want my flag back If someone had told me three years ago that soon a Canadian flag would make me feel uncomfortable or even angry, I wouldn’t have believed them.

But here we are.

A fringe minority, with many links to the far right, has taken my flag, using it as a prop in its quest for so-called freedom. Apparently this band of complainers has never looked up the World Population Review website, which analyzes all countries on 12 different freedom metrics including rule of law, movement and religion. That analysis finds Canada the sixth most free country in the world and far ahead of the U.S., which ranks 14th, and the U.K., which ranks 15th.

Of course, the flames of this grievance are being fanned by the presumptive leader of the Conservative leadership contest. The dumbing down doesn’t end there though.

From conspiracy theories to the denigration of our public institutions to the worship of crypto-currencies, this lifelong politician is persuading many Canadians they aren’t free.

Way back in the day, a Canadian flag sewn on my backpack led to great conversations or even a free drink as I travelled (some of ) the world. Now, for the moment, I’m not sure that I would sport a Canadian flag, for fear of association.

And that makes me sad. And angry.

Everyone has the right to peaceful protest (because, ummm, we live in a free country).

But the flag is all of ours. It’s not just for people who attended Facebook University.

Of course, flag debates are not new.

The Progressive Conservative party of the time and the Royal Canadian Legion, among others, fought vigorously against our new national flag in the mid 1960s. But over time our flag became accepted and recognized as a symbol for hope and freedom.

I am hoping that the men’s World Cup of soccer later in the year might be a neutral enough event for us to reclaim it from the anti-vaxxers (or whatever it is they are against).
