A name change suggestion

In your February issue you feature Bobcaygeon’s Lavish Locks. There’s another story “Creative in Coby.”

The previous month The Lindsay Advocate did an issue about transportation, which included Peterborough, Cameron, Fenelon Falls, Omemee. We applaud that Lindsay is not the centre of the universe. Your magazine reflects a much bigger picture. We think the name of your magazine should drop “Lindsay.” I Googled “The Advocate” and there are many Advocate magazines and newspapers (Louisiana, Pictou, Red Deer, Whitchurch/Stouffville), so we understand why the title cannot be simply the Advocate.

How about Kawartha Lakes Advocate? How about a contest amongst your readers to suggest a more encompassing name?

The topic of this letter was raised in the Fenelon Falls Library where many locals pick up their copy of the Advocate. People chimed in spontaneously in the conversation, pointing out most of your columnists are not from Lindsay.

Geoff Coleman, Trevor Hutchinson, Diane Reesor and Sylvia Keesmaat all hail from Fenelon Falls.

We love the content of your magazine but we suggest a name adjustment to mirror that content.

Dana Bachman, Fenelon Falls ~ After the amalgamation of the municipalities in the former Victoria County, so many businesses changed their name to start with “Kawartha Lakes” that we didn’t want to follow the crowd on this renaming. Consider that The Toronto Star covers news in Ajax or Milton. The Peterborough Examiner covers news in Millbrook or Lakefield. It is very common for media names to reflect the largest population centre — in our case, Lindsay. However, that’s why our tagline is “Kawartha Lakes’ finest magazine,” to proudly show we cover our entire city.

Where’s the men?

I wish to congratulate The Lindsay Advocate on its Women in Leadership special feature. I expect that all of the women showcased will experience a boost in business from that article.

When reading about Marlene Morrison Nicholls’ commitment to DEI, I wondered if the next issue of the Advocate will feature Men in Leadership. The prosperity and well-being of all citizens depends on the contributions of everyone employed in the economy.

A special edition highlighting the business accomplishments of male entrepreneurs in our region would show the Advocate’s commitment to DEI. Gene Balfour, Fenelon Falls ~ The purpose of EDI (equity, diversity, inclusion, or DEI) is to help address historical imbalances by broadening participation in the workforce and in society to ensure a wide range of perspectives, contributions and opportunities for people who have historically been shut out, in many cases to the point of oppression. For instance, it is well within living memory that women who wanted to start a business had to have their husbands cosign for a loan.

Why all the men?

After looking at your magazine today (March Advocate), I couldn’t believe your magazine had three feature articles about certain men and their accomplishments. Oh, you had a nice story on Kay Hawkins at the end and some women in their employment. I know a lady who started her business on her own from the ground up over 30 years ago and is still going strong and never stopped even through this pandemic. Her name is Debbie MacDonald, owner of the Spudster in Little Britain. That is who you should have featured in your magazine for International Women’s Day. The men could have been in a later magazine.

Janet Hutchinson ~ In the March Advocate, the publisher’s column was about a woman, the op-ed on page 11 was written by a woman, the lead story was about a woman and the many women and men she helped in their businesses. (All the people interviewed in that story were women.) In addition to the article about Kay Hawkins, the issue featured 14 pages of women in business profiles and a column by our contributing editor on the national daycare program, an issue that disproportionately affects women.

[ IAN M c KECHNIE ] Ian has been a contributing writer for The Lindsay Advocate since September 2017, when the magazine had only an online presence.

He writes the “Just in Time” column on topics of local cultural and historic interest, and has occasionally chipped in with additional features, both online and in print. A lifelong resident of Lindsay, Ian graduated from LCVI in 2009 before completing a degree in English literature at Trent University in 2013. As of 2022, he is on the verge of completing the Ontario Museum Association’s Certificate in Museum Studies. When he isn’t busy writing, Ian enjoys cycling, walking, baking, model railroading, reading and spending time with family and friends. In 2021, Ian published his first book, It’s All Relative: 170 Years of McQuarrie Memories.

Free monthly groups help with grief after suicide, overdose loss

Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Hospice Services offers several free monthly support groups. Two of them — Healing After Suicide Loss and Healing After Overdose Loss — are drop-in groups, where participants can join at any time.

These types of grief are very challenging, says Christine Warren, a grief guide volunteer with hospice and palliative (end of life care), noting that after someone dies by suicide or overdose, those left behind often need to work through isolation, shame and guilt.

“Our grief guides, Erin, Christine and Julie, bring many years of professional and life experience to the table enabling them to create a welcoming, safe, non-judgmental and healing environment for each person,” Warren says.

“This invites clients to share their stories, memories, laughter and tears.”

She adds that she cannot stress enough the importance of reaching out to others going through similar experiences for support. “As survivors we know not to judge each other, we share the same language, we can acknowledge any regrets and fears openly and without shame. We can mourn and grieve in ways not based on gossip or speculation.”

From Olde Gaol to Kawartha Lakes Museum & Archives

Kawartha Lakes Museum & Archives is the new name for an old place.

The Olde Gaol Museum now has a new identity as Kawartha Lakes Museum & Archives.

The 1863 county jail building has had a varied and rich history, from housing the area’s jail inmates to becoming a community museum.

The name change reflects its primary purpose, says Barbara Doyle, the museum’s director, of “acquiring, preserving and exhibiting items that reflect the history of Kawartha Lakes for our community.”

The building is treated as the museum’s largest “artifact” as well as housing a collection of more than 30,000 objects, photographs and archival materials. Staff and volunteers have completed some modern upgrades including new exhibits which showcase different areas and themes across the city, while also expanding their digital capacities, archival and technological supports.

Doyle says the museum is “so much more than a jail exhibit,” pointing out it is also a welcoming community space for residents and visitors.

The museum relies on visitor revenues, individual donations and grants to support its operations; it does not receive salary or operational funding in the municipal budget.

Women Changemakers Fund of Kawartha Lakes will help overcome barriers

Women in business are incredible changemakers in our communities, says Marlene Morrison Nicholls, yet they often face barriers to getting their enterprises started.

The Women Changemakers Fund of Kawartha Lakes is going to change that by investing both funding and mentorship support for local entrepreneurial women, she says.

Morrison Nicholls says as a Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes fund, “We are committed to helping our community grow and prosper, and we know women are the key to success.”

The insurance company owner says small businesses are crucial to the economic health of our region, and plenty of studies have shown that businesses with more women in leadership positions perform better, with higher profits and greater innovation and growth.

Lindsay Chamber finds its new executive director

The Lindsay + District Chamber of Commerce has hired Allyssa Adams to be its next executive director.

The 32-year-old Adams, a former board member of the LDCC, brings a great deal of event planning and admin-

istrative experience to the role and says she is looking forward to working with the small business community.

“I am excited to meet and work with our local business owners across the LDCC district,” Adams says. She worked most recently for Pinnguaq, a non-profit based in Lindsay. She also worked for several years with the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team.

“Kawartha Lakes has such a diverse business landscape from agriculture, to retail, manufacturing and more. I want to make sure the Chamber is hearing the needs of these businesses and responding with resources, events and information that matter to them and help support their work.”

The board was looking for someone who, ideally, knew the local area, was used to interacting with small business owners, and who would be an effective planner for key events, says Advocate publisher Roderick Benns, who is beginning his third year as president of the LDCC. “Our chamber is growing in many ways and we want to see that continue “including holding more in-person events this year,” Benns says. “We see Allyssa playing a big part in this growth plan.”

The board also returned Kim Downey as treasurer, Shana Kelly as secretary and Brett Goodwin, Waylon Skinner and Sarah Brown as directors, while also adding Dawn McColl as a director. The LDCC continues to look for three more board members. If interested, email president@lindsaychamber.com

BIA looks for more buzz in downtown Lindsay’s downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA) is offering community organizations, businesses and individuals the opportunity to use Lindsay’s downtown as an event venue — even offering cash incentives to do so.

The event grant program will see the BIA offer up to $2,000 in financial support, in addition to assistance with administration, planning and promotion where needed, for an approved event in the downtown.

Charest could oversee Tory reboot

Even before Jean Charest had made it official that he was entering the Conservative leadership race, Pierre Poilievre, the party’s most adroit malcontent, had already become unglued at the prospect of the former Progressive Conservative Party leader running to regain his old job.

Poilievre, representing both the unhinged and the merely unsatisfied far right wing, is the kind of politician who animates conservative discourse in 2022. A sharp but intemperate politician, he is the heir apparent to all things narrow and mean-spirited within the Conservative Party of Canada. That is, unless someone of a more moderate touch can restore it, which is of course to Poilievere’s disadvantage. After all, Skippy, as he is known, is a man who has never doubted himself — always the most dangerous kind of person.

Enter Jean Charest, who caused quite the buzz when he announced his intention to run, given his impressive political pedigree. The youngest MP ever to be sworn into cabinet, Charest, in a memorable stint as environment minister, would later help Brian Mulroney cement his reputation as the greenest prime minister in Canadian history.

When it came time to run for the leadership of what was then the Progressive Conservative Party, and even though Kim Campbell had a massive lead, Charest made it highly competitive, even though he was just 35 at the time.

After the near annihilation of the party in 1993, Charest worked assiduously to rebuild it, taking the PCs to 20 seats in the next election at a time when Reform was siphoning conservative voter support.

In 1998 he was practically drafted by the nation to stop then-Quebec premier Lucien Bouchard and the nationalist Parti Québecois from winning an election and gaining a sovereignty mandate. To do so, Charest had to work within the Liberal Party, since there was no Conservative equivalent in the province. Coming from behind, Charest won the popular vote, although not the election, and helped to arrest the sovereignty movement.

Aside from Poilievre, other social conservatives may look to Leslyn Lewis.

(As someone who has long supported strong women to run for office, and certainly strong women of colour, I consider it a shame Lewis is the “wrong and strong” type, as a friend once remarked to me.)

In 2022, it’s time for the Conservatives to field a leader with the gravitas and the political acumen to go toe to toe with Justin Trudeau and offer an alternative. It is delightful to consider that the Conservative Party could once again find its moderate roots and help change this toxic political culture. These roots stretch all the way back to John A. Macdonald, Robert Borden and John Diefenbaker and were still being nurtured by Brian Mulroney before the drought of common sense prevailed in this party.

Charest is the best way to see a Tory reboot succeed.

EDITORIAL New strategies, old delays There was much talk from the government of building back better in the wake of the pandemic, and from the left in general. (On the right it was typically couched in conspiratorial phrases like the “great reset.”) In the end, at least so far, there’s precious little of either.

Two years ago, the federal government announced the formation of the Industry Strategy Council to inform the government of where it must act. The council delivered its report more than a year ago, but there has been no action on the four major pillars the council reported on.

Industrial strategy. Where is a bold new industrial plan? At a time when there is tremendous support on the ground for this nation to start building things again, there is a dearth of corresponding political will in Ottawa. An industrial strategy must be anchored in key manufacturing sectors where we can compete or where we simply must act in the national interest, as with vaccine and medicine manufacturing.

Natural resources. The council took a broad look at our strengths, with one of the four pillars focused on environmental, social and governance factors (ESG), which is a fancy way of saying Canada must become a world leader in clean energy and technology.

Digital economy. A true digital workforce innovation strategy is needed, according to the council’s report — one that includes accelerated immigration status for high-skilled candidates who are offered jobs here. We must also retain our own university graduates looking to enter the digital sphere. The report also suggests the government buy breakthrough technology from Canadian companies.

Agriculture. One of the clearest “advantage Canada” areas is in agriculture, so why not build on the worldwide explosion of demand for plantbased foods? To make it truly work, though, the council says we will need to build new roads, bridges and ports and develop a long-term strategy to get products to market.

All four of these pillars intersect for maximum gain. However, it’s clear that what is lacking is the sense of urgency to start acting upon any of them.

Schmale’s pick for Conservative Party leader surprises reader I was surprised that MP Jamie Schmale was so quick to endorse Pierre Poilievre, rather than waiting to see who else might throw their hat in the ring. Pierre may well win the leadership but lose the next election. I believe that would make Schmale 0 for 3 on his choice for leader becoming our PM. The leadership race has already become quite nasty, with attack dogs on all sides. I fear for the future of Sir John A’s (and my) party.

Looking for a progressive municipal champion KIRK WINTER Kirk Winter is a retired high school history teacher who covers municipal, provincial, and federal politics for the Advocate.

With a decision made by retired Lindsay lawyer Jason Ward not to run for mayor in this fall’s municipal election, a gaping hole now exists for other progressively minded candidates — ideally one, to avoid splitting the vote — to declare in a race that will likely see long-time councillor Pat Dunn at least initially be viewed as the front-runner.

With Ward’s decision not to run, progressives need to start looking for an alternate candidate, and the clock is ticking. Running for mayor is not an easy task. You need to organize a campaign team, raise money, get signs made and arrange your personal and professional life so that when the race begins you can focus on the election almost exclusively.

What qualities should this progressive candidate have?

Ideally this person should have business or government experience, too, as the City of Kawartha Lakes has grown to be a $300 million enterprise with billions in assets and thousands of employees. Councillor Doug Elmslie told the Advocate in an earlier interview that a newly minted mayor with no council experience could take as long as two years to become comfortable with the workings of city hall.

A new progressive standard-bearer would be willing to highlight issues such as public transit, geared-toincome housing and active living for all. This person should have a vision for Kawartha Lakes that includes people of all ages and backgrounds. This person should have a public record on preserving the environment that is so essential to the quality of life and economic success of Kawartha Lakes. This person should also not be afraid to spend public money when the decision benefits the majority of citizens in the city.

This individual should be sure of who they are and what they stand for and have the skin of a rhinoceros, because if it was ever not the case before, politics has become a blood-sport. Two years of a pandemic that has changed millions of people’s lives, often irreversibly, has made the electorate cranky. If the last federal election was any example, this 2022 municipal campaign has the potential to be the ugliest ever.

With Ward’s decision not to run, progressives need to start looking for an alternate candidate, and the clock is ticking. Running for mayor is not an easy task. You need to organize a campaign team, raise money, get signs made and arrange your personal and professional life so that when the race begins you can focus on the election almost exclusively.

Lastly, this progressive candidate cannot underestimate Dunn, 78, who is expected to declare in early May and be the conservative choice in this race. Dunn has decades of experience on council and has been campaigning for one office or another since the early 1990s, including as a Reform Party candidate. Dunn has potential supporters and name recognition right across the city for his work on expanding the city’s off-road vehicle trail system to include urbanized areas.

To this point, Dunn also appears to have the right-of -centre territory to himself, given that fellow right-wing councillor Ron Ashmore has decided to run again for council.

Fortunately for progressives, nominations don’t open until May and the campaign will not start in earnest until after Labour Day, given the June provincial election and the electorate’s inattention over summer.

There’s still time for someone to step up and offer a serious challenge.

Self-employment in

Kawartha Lakes

}} Entrepreneurs motivated by passion, ideas and a willingness to take risks

One of the largest categories of local employment.

Self-employment has been relatively stable in Kawartha Lakes over the previous two decades. Approximately 12 per cent of Kawartha Lakes’ workforce is self-employed, a category that analysts expect will remain vital to the local economy for the foreseeable future.

In terms of financial impact, in 2019, the total selfemployment income in the city was $73,870,000. This accounts for nearly five per cent of employment income in the region.

These numbers come courtesy of Sean Dooley, the labour market information analyst for the Workforce Development Board. He said while traditional employment is the primary driver for income in Kawartha Lakes, “The net effect from self-employment income is far from insignificant.”

AGRICULTURE

Agriculture is a substantial economic driver in Kawartha Lakes with over 300,000 acres of available farmland.

Agriculture and related industries create significant economic activity through direct and indirect employment and the buying and selling of products, goods and services.

You don’t have to tell Kathy Moor or Ken Carson any of this — farming is in their genes.

Carson has a herd of 90 dairy cows and grows grains and vegetables to feed them at Cedarcrest Farm in Cameron, along with his partner, Moor. She is also an educator for the Dairy Farmers of Ontario. She says farming has changed over the years; for instance, under the national, mandatory proAction plan, dairy farmers must now fill out extensive paperwork daily. While the goal is to ensure high standards, Moor says it adds a few hours to their already long days.

Taking time off is the biggest challenge. “Cows don’t care if you are sick or on holiday. They need to be milked twice a day, day in and day out,” says Moor. “We both had COVID and were fortunate a neighbour could help us a bit.”

Finding help is always a trial, according to Moor.

While her partner has an agriculture degree from the University of Guelph, that is not required for helpers.

“Anyone can shovel manure. It is difficult finding people that want this type of work.”

A new trade agreement in 2018 allowed foreign dairy products into Canada, affecting farmers’ bottom lines.

Moor says although there was some federal compensation available, it by no means covers the long-term loss.

She says her urban friends visit the farm and love the experience, even though they don’t understand that sometimes the hours spent working can be all-consuming.

The best part of farming, according to Moor, is spending time with family. Carson concurs and says he does not know what he would do if he was not a farmer.

DOG WALKING AND BARTENDING

Very few youths aged 15 to24 are self-employed, or at least few declared this. The rate of self-employment tends to increase significantly with age, which could be for various factors, including having more experience in the workforce, looking for flexible work arrangements or a stronger desire to be their own boss.

Blake Brock is in his own age group for being selfemployed. Last year, he launched his dog walking and pet sitting business with a target in mind — to pay for fuel and car insurance. The hitch? He does not own a car or have a driver’s licence. Yet, at 11, he has a legitimate business with many clients.

The Woodville native started out walking three dogs. Last summer, a client approached him about pet sitting. Brock has always loved animals, with four dogs and two cats at home. The client offered him a job that involved watching two dogs, a fish and a rabbit for three nights. Everything went smoothly, and now Brock has the creatures as regular, daily clients.

You don’t have to look far to find Brock’s inspiration.

His mom, Kristen Slemko, started a pet cleanup business in 2016, and also ran Bartender & Co, which provides professional mixing, pouring and serving of libations at events and venues.

Slemko closed her pet cleanup business to help her son, but her bartending business has grown; she has expanded to food service and now employs 30 women.

She says she wouldn’t be anywhere without them. “These women on my team have helped me build my company up and helped me find a smile that I was missing.” Unfortunately, with the pandemic ending events and weddings.

“I’ve not been able to give all the women security.”

In the early days of her business ventures, the lack of support from people she expected it from was a significant challenge. Some said, “You’ll never make it, and you’re wasting your time,” she says, which fuelled her to push harder.

The primary reason for being self-employed is more personal: her family. Slemko’s other son has “extra medical needs.” She needed the flexibility to take him to many appointments a week, something her business allows her to do.

RETAIL

Kaitlynn McLennan — who also works as a local paramedic — opened her retail business in the middle of the pandemic. The Green Treefrog in Bobcaygeon offers Canadian-made refillable and eco-friendly products for bath, body and home.

McLennan suffered from eczema and other skin conditions as a child. “I started really digging into products and, more specifically, the ingredients that are in them.”

She found a lot of ingredients irritate the skin.

Her other passion was reducing waste. She started making small changes at home and realized how much waste households create. McLennan combined the two

passions — zero waste and clean ingredients — for her business.

She started her business online before taking the brick-and-mortar plunge. “There was so much risk, and I was hesitant.” There were only a few locations for rent in the main business area. After being turned down by a few landlords because of being a new business, she found one that wanted to support her as a new female business owner.

McLennan did not jump into self-employment alone.

She enrolled in the Starter Company Plus program through the city. Participants receive training and business skills development and mentorship from local business leaders and may be eligible for a grant of up to $5,000. “It was a great asset, and it connected us to lots of contacts, she says,” noting she now carries candles and kombucha from others she met in the program.

The entrepreneur spent summers at her grandmother’s shop, Dee Jay’s Flowers in Fenelon Falls. The support her grandma received from customers and the community inspired her. “I wanted those types of relationships in Bobcaygeon.”

In comparison, 3,870 men claimed self-employment income in the same period, claiming an average income of $11,434. This gap appeared to be closing in 2017; the average female self-employment income was $9,281, while the average for men was $12,009.

in 2000. While living in Etobicoke with their toddler and baby, they narrowed their choice to either running a motel or a convenience store.

An opportunity presented itself and made the choice easy, says Priti Patel, who owns the Kent Inn in Lindsay alongside her husband, Chris. “A couple in their 50s wanted to travel and offered us the chance to run their Whitby motel while they were away.” The job lasted nearly two years and cemented their choice. “Running a convenience store, you would not see your family as much. We wanted to spend more time with our kids.”

Patel says the Lindsay Chamber of Commerce was invaluable in helping them to get to know the community. “After our renovations, they came for a tour and started sending guests to us.”

After they moved to Lindsay, the early years were challenging as they did not have staff and did everything themselves, including cleaning 16 suites. “It is hard on your back and shoulders,” said Patel. Chris does all the yard care and maintenance of the buildings.

With two young children and no time off, the Patels did not have time to socialize at first, but that soon changed. “The community was so welcoming to us, and we had no trouble making friends.”

Patel says the Lindsay Chamber of Commerce was invaluable in helping them to get to know the community.

“After our renovations, they came for a tour and started sending guests to us.”

While the elder Patels settled in quickly, they were concerned about their children adjusting to school, as there weren’t many Indian families in the community at the time. Patel said if it had been a problem, they would have gone back to Whitby. The fears were unfounded, and their now-grown son and daughter finished school in Lindsay, with both going on to post-secondary education.

While tourism creates thousands of jobs, it is the biggest hurdle in the sense that it makes them so busy, and sometimes good help is hard to find. Patel says they

have three part-time employees who clean and help at the front desk, but finding reliable help is difficult.

“We have to do many jobs at once when staff leave or don’t show up.”

She says with the pandemic, tourism took a big hit.

They were fortunate to qualify for government funding, and now business is booming. It is next to impossible to book a room for more than one night. “We have lots of nurses staying with us because of shortages at the nursing homes, and Fleming College students are in need as well.”

The Patels’ children are not interested in taking over the inn, so the couple are unsure of their retirement plans.

That is well in the future, and for now, they are making plans to expand the business in the community they love.

CITY SUPPORTS

A rise in technology has helped self-employment to grow. Internet-based technology like Zoom, social media and cloud sharing services enable people to work anywhere at any time. Rebecca Mustard, the manager, economic development services for Kawartha Lakes, says it has “definitely changed the game.”

“We are seeing a huge shift of small businesses transitioning to real technology adoption to use platforms.”

Businesses are doing transactions and marketing online, and customers find them online. “It has opened up the ability to be accessible.”

The city offers many free programs for everyone from those just starting out to seasoned businesses needing help. Mustard said the Digital Main Street program helps businesses achieve digital transformation with a team of highly trained professionals who help businesses grow and manage their business through digital tools and technology.

Having a team to support a new business is important, Mustard said. A few she suggested having on speed dial include the Kawartha Lakes Small Business and Entrepreneurship Centre for coaching and mentoring; for financing, the Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation; and membership in the local chambers of commerce for networking.

Mustard says to own your own business, you have to be comfortable with some level of risk. “When you step out on your own, you no longer have a paycheque,” she adds. “You need to be passionate about your business as you are creating a lifestyle.”

She says self-employment is critical to the local economy. “You want to start well and have a firm foundation.

There are great resources in this community to help you do that.”

It was several days of exciting special events, community profiles, and reasons to display important bits of local history and culture ­— but it was so much more. That’s because the game of hockey has resonated profoundly in our community for more than a century.

When the Rogers Hometown Hockey festival rolled into Lindsay in October 2021, our area’s love of the sport received national exposure. Hometown Hockey presented the opportunity for local sports fans to celebrate a deep, rich hockey history and culture that Lindsay and area have proudly built, preserved and nurtured.

By the end of the 2021 calendar year, local arenas were dark and silent. Just as they had been for so many months since lockdowns came into play the previous year, leagues at all levels were affected for the second consecutive year. It was discouraging for participants, and depressing for fans, families and supporters.

During the event, and in the days leading up to it, we naturally honoured locally produced players whose names are engraved on the Stanley Cup. However, just as important was the acknowledgment of this community’s hockey roots that reach throughout all levels of play. After all, minor hockey leagues are where every player starts.

They also give local fans and supporters great entertainment and reason to cheer with pride and enthusiasm.

Simon Ward, Lindsay native and founding member of The Strumbellas band, summed up what the sport has meant for so many generations, when, on the Oct. 25 national broadcast of Hometown Hockey, he said, “Growing up, it was totally a pastime for my family on a Friday night to go watch the local hockey team, the Lindsay Muskies, and that was a huge deal for me. It was so fun going (to the arena) — the smell of the rink, and sitting with all your friends and family, and watching the hockey game on Friday night. That was a huge deal for us.”

So, we decorated storefronts and homes with displays of hockey memorabilia. We proudly waved the flag of hockey tradition and excitement for the future. We stood in the cold rain at the Lindsay Recreation Complex parking lot as Sportsnet told viewers nationwide about our hockey heritage. We cheered our wet, sopping lungs out to show our community spirit to the entire country.

And then, in the first few weeks of the 2021–22 hockey season, we returned — as allowed under COVID protocols — with pleasure to hockey arenas across Kawartha Lakes to revel in a new season of play. It didn’t matter

whether we cheered on our local junior squads, our travelling all-star teams, or our atoms, peewees and all ages in recreational minor league play. It just felt so downright great to be back in the arena after the challenging conditions that led to shutdowns, attempted start-ups, and more lockdowns since the spring of 2020.

Then, just as it seemed that hockey fans could dare to consider that a tiny sense of normalcy was returning to their sport after COVID had compromised operations for so long, things crashed to a halt. COVID lockdowns meant that public arenas and hockey leagues got shut down. Again.

By the end of the 2021 calendar year, local arenas were dark and silent. Just as they had been for so many months since lockdowns came into play the previous year, leagues at all levels were affected for the second consecutive year.

It was discouraging for participants, and depressing for fans, families and supporters. It was not what anyone wanted, but regulations called for the suspension of play, just like in 2020.

Teams did what they could to provide ice time for players to keep sharp, but guidelines and restrictions were imposing. Players had to wear N-95 masks under helmets and visors, change into their gear outside the arena, arrive no more than 15 minutes before game time and couldn’t shower at the arena afterward or get into closed arenas to retrieve equipment. Teams were limited to practices with reduced number of players at any time. There were limits on the number of people who could attend games, and those who did had to be screened and provide contact tracing information. Minor hockey games were played in three-on-three or four-on-four formats in an effort to give youngsters at least a bit of playing time.

Though such strict COVID protocol practices were not unique to our country, there’s been a certain resilience displayed by those affected that can only be described as “made in Canada.”

Steve Trumbull, coach and general manager of the Little Britain Merchants Junior C hockey club, knows all too well about recovering from challenging circumstances.

“Only in Canada would we be able to handle such rules and protocols that COVID brought on us, and come out stronger in the end,” he said when discussing the conditions over the last two seasons. After a month-long shutdown in December, the league began play again in the new year under provincially mandated protocols for public events.

The Merchants are now enjoying one of their most successful seasons in many years in the Provincial Junior Hockey League. As of the end of February, the team was in first

place in its division and Trumbull had high hopes for the Merchants in the playoffs With an excellent record and a roster comprising mostly local players, the Merchants are drawing strong, supportive crowds to their games. With recent further loosening of public guidelines for events such as hockey games, more fans are expected for what the team hopes is a long and successful playoff run this spring.

Similar optimism exists around the Junior A Lindsay Muskies dressing room.

The Ontario Junior Hockey League team is in playoff contention with a month or so to go in the season. After the past few years of less-than-stellar results on the ice, Muskie coach Brendan O’Grady and president Sal Polito say they feel good about the team’s current chances, and are especially optimistic for the 2022–23 season. Though several Muskies moved on with non-hockey priorities when the initial shutdown came into effect in the 2020–21 season, this year’s team has impressed the coach. “We want to make the playoffs this year, but we will definitely challenge for top spot in our division next year,” O’Grady says.

When COVID protocols were first enacted, some players grumbled, but team officials made it clear that if they wanted to play, they had to accept new rules. “The players get it. They have been great to be careful, to follow protocols whether they’re at the rink or at school and in the community, because they want to play,” O’Grady says.

“We have worked with the City’s protocols, and everybody from the City to the staff at the arena have been great through this. The league itself has been excellent with its guidelines and protocols and has worked hard to ensure that we get a full schedule,” despite having to suspend play for a few weeks,” Polito explains. “We worked through COVID with a whole different attitude than the general public. Safety protocols and measures that were initiated were even more cautious and strict than those that the general public had to follow.”

Parents of minor hockey players were faced with situations never anticipated when they enrolled their youngsters a couple of years ago. With the first enaction of protocols in 2020, a maximum of 40 people were allowed into the arena, Paul Duncan of the Lindsay Minor Hockey Association points out.

“That included players, coaches and officials, so that didn’t leave much room at all for parents and family to come to games. But we have had a great group of people helping with everything, which has been really appreciated.”

Though there was a “normal” start to the 2021 season in the fall, and minor hockey executive members went above and beyond screening protocols, some youngsters elected not to play this year. Games were once again shut down for a month and only resumed in February. All players 12 and older had to be vaccinated, according to Ontario Minor Hockey Association mandates.

Despite all the challenges in terms of crowd limitations up to the present, the public has strongly supported the game.

“Our fan base has grown this year and will increase even more if we make the playoffs,” Polito adds.

“People are definitely finding a way to come to the rink and watch and support us,” says O’Grady. “As much as COVID challenges have been bad news, it’s been good for people to come together around the team, to rally for the club and the community. We have reason to be positive about the future.”

A local sports fan remembers a time, not too long ago, when Friday nights in the winter meant Lindsay Muskies games at the old Kiwanis Arena on Russell Street. Saturday nights would be spent at the Little Britain Community Centre for Merchants contests. The games provided not only good entertainment value, but were important elements of many fans’ social lives.

All participants, teams and fans have been through a lot in the last two years. Now, as glimmers of hope give people reason to be optimistic about hockey’s future here, perhaps more people like that above-mentioned fan will consider heading out to games once again.

Council recommended at its committee of the whole meeting that $100,000 be set aside as potential seed money for a splash pad in Omemee.

Advocates say the supporters in the village need the time to organize and begin fundraising before the 2023 budget is discussed in November. The city’s estimates suggest the project could cost as much as $600,000.

In his presentation to council, director of community services Craig Shanks made it clear the splash pad project could be expensive and the bulk of the costs would be borne through fundraising by residents who want the facility to be built.

“There are also water issues in Omemee,” Shanks said. “We need to consider water and waste water issues and there is study and design work that needs to be done.”

Councillor Doug Elmslie pointed out that for the splash pad in Fenelon, “the water needs first to be chlorinated (before usage) and then dechlorinated (before becoming waste water). Will this need to happen in Omemee too?”

Elmslie said.

Shanks confirmed a splash pad would have to use this process, noting a holding tank will need to be provided in Omemee at a cost of $150,000.

Mayor Andy Letham brought up the the idea of using a well or the nearby lake as a water source, wondering if this would be safe. However, Shanks says this would be a greater expense.

In response to Shanks’ report, Omemee-area councillor Ron Ashmore asked for $100,000 in seed money be set aside for the 2023 budget. That money, if approved, would likely pay for the splash pad design and water study.

“I am trying to see the positives in this report,” Ashmore said. There are lots of groups in Omemee who want to help. If we have to wait till 2024 that is fine. We just want to keep the project going.”

Lindsay Lawn Bowling Club’s new president John Harper’s goal is to dispel the idea that lawn bowling is a game only for seniors.

He says the club and sport are inclusive, fun and fair for all generations, with people as young as 10 welcome. He remembers, despite being an experienced player, getting trounced in the sport by someone who was 12 and another who was 90.

This year’s lawn bowling season begins May 7. Similar to curling, lawn bowling has a target on the field, which in this case is a small white ball called the jack. A player must try and roll their bowling ball, or bowl, so it stops near the jack. Then come the twists on this premise: the jack ball can be hit to a different position, and every bowl has a heavier side, which causes the bowls to curve towards the heavier side as they roll.

The club holds barbecues on long weekends and Canada Day, with occasional pub nights that find the bowlers usually visiting sponsors like The Pie Eyed Monk, Smitty’s or Wild Wing, Harper said.

Lindsay’s club has occupied a corner of Elgin Park since 1992, but Harper says the sport has been played locally as far back as the late 19th century. The club has bounced around numerous places, from where St. Mary’s Church is today to St. Paul’s Anglican to a spot between LCVI and Central Senior School.

The club was once much more exclusive. “You used to have to try out,” explained Harper, “and could only join if you were good enough of a bowler. Around 2003, before I came on, it changed so anyone interested could sign up, and we have more members than other clubs who haven’t done this.”

The club used to have a drop-in system where members could show up, socialize and be placed on a team when a game was set up, but COVID changed that. To facilitate social distancing, the club set up a system for people to book times and teams in advance.

With things seemingly getting better with the pandemic, Harper said he hopes the drop-in system will return but because some people like booking times ahead, this year the club is looking into integrating the two.

Sandra Scott, treasurer and membership director for Lindsay’s club, started lawn bowling because of her daughter. Before COVID, Parkview Public School, where Scott’s daughter Cori Millard was attending, gave students a chance to go to the nearby club and try out the game as part of their phys ed curriculum. In 2013 that’s how both Scott and Millard were introduced to the sport, and in 2018 Millard won bronze in the Canadian Youth Championships in Winnipeg. Millard has also competed in B.C. and Halifax.

The Harper family has made the sport a passion of their lives since John started in 2012; his wife Joan shortly after tried it to be able to attend a club lunch one Saturday.

They have been playing in tournaments across Ontario and planning vacations around those locations.

Harper estimates 75 to 80 per cent of bowlers at the Lindsay club are there for fun and to socialize; the rest are well-experienced bowlers looking for challenging opponents.

They make sure that a beginner who wants to give the game a try out of curiosity is not paired up with a competitive expert.

Bobcaygeon also has a lawn bowling club, which was established in 1935.

It is located at 87 Dunn St, between Verulam Cemetery and Kawartha Settlers’ Village.

Its yearly schedule runs from May to late September and the club welcomes anyone to come out and try the game. It also offers instructions for new and prospective bowlers.

“It’s a game lots of people can try because it can be a simple one for people just starting and then becomes very strategic as you develop skills,” said Scott.

To mark whose bowl is whose when marking points, the bowls on different teams have a different colour or symbol. For instance, Joan’s bowls have a picture of a rose and John’s have one of a rabbit – designs they purchased from outside the club.

Games tend to take 1 1/2 to 2 hours. The 2022 schedule has a variety of forms of play. One is a jitney, which is where teams are created randomly from those who show up to play rather than established teams. The general lawn bowling team consists of three players, the lead, vice and skip. In that order the teams tend to go from least experienced to most experienced. Jitneys will be played Monday through Friday. From May 9 to Jun. 10, jitneys will take place at 2 p.m., and from Jun. 13 to Sept. 16, games will be at 7 p.m.

Every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. is open bowling, but players must call the club to book a rink. People can also show up to bowl Saturdays at 10 a.m. After these

games, players often go out for lunch together at a restaurant that sponsors the club.

All bowlers are asked to bring flat soled shoes (no heels) to protect the greens. There are different types of membership fees to choose from. The club will also host Give It a Try event where people are invited to give the game a try for free. It takes place on weekdays Jun. 1 to 10 starting at 1 p.m.

Championship and Household Pet Cat Show held this month in Lindsay The Canadian Cat Association presents a championship and household pet cat show at the Commonwell Exhibition Building at the Lindsay Fairgrounds on April 23-24.

Special features of the show include approximately 125 cats and kittens competing and on display.

This includes beautiful and unusual pedigreed cats and kittens, as well as regular domestic cats who will be competing for top awards, titles, and points towards national and regional wins, according to a media release.

She can breathe fire, save horses and is a sought-after burlesque dancer.

Oh, and she once jumped from a plane with a tiny Russian man on her back.

But we’ll get to the tedium a bit later.

When I meet Ivory Conover at The Pie Eyed Monk in Lindsay she apologizes for getting back to me so late. Something about long days on set, shooting an indie horror movie. Something about playing a cop, running through the wilds of Ontario, chasing a monster leech. (The usual excuses; as journalists, we just get used to these things.)

The 36-year-old is biracial, bisexual, polyamorous and happily married.

So maybe not your typical Woodville resident.

The self-described cockeyed optimist believes that Star Trek is better than Star Wars (I liked her immediately), and that archery and axe throwing are underrated pastimes.

Conover was largely raised in Toronto but spent summers in the Kawartha region while growing up. But when she and her husband moved to Woodville five years ago to an idyllic rectangle of a farm, she felt she was at home.

She explains that the panini has affected people in many ways. (Conover avoids saying pandemic so uses a substitute; cue the Italian bread.) For her, the panini caused her Toronto-based event planning business to dry up, almost overnight. From an income perspective, she had lost her bread and butter. (Okay, enough with the bread.)

Conover’s soda water arrives at our table, along with my green tea, our beverages unreflective of the spicy content in our conversation.

It was the stunning loss of her event planning business income that caused her to reevaluate her life path. She and her husband planned for a new life in Woodville, using the equity in their Toronto home to acquire the five-acre farm.

Friends and family said she wouldn’t last, that Toronto was in her veins. They were wrong.

Toronto is still there for her to visit when needed for her career, but Kawartha Lakes continues to impress her.

“I love Lindsay. I love Kawartha Lakes. Everyone had money on me going stir-crazy here. Seven months in, I said, ‘I don’t want to go back to Toronto.’ Things are at a reasonable speed now,” she says, referring to her new pace of life. She also describes herself as a “fish,” so “the 250 lakes in this city can’t hurt.”

Lunch arrives. It’s a large garden salad for Conover, minus the candy-striped beets — she’s allergic. For me, it’s a choose-your-own chicken and pineapple pizza. (Judge not, lest ye be judged.)

Back to the spicy bits. “So, I’m bi and I’m married to a man who also identifies as queer.” She told her then-boyfriend, “I date women and men. You’re welcome to do so as well.” It was also clear before they got married that they were interested in a polyamorous relationship — an open marriage.

Conover, in conversation, is not one to lean in and lower her voice, preferring instead the let-it-fly approach. From our high-top table I can see at least six heads turned our way during this part of the chat.

At first, I am self-conscious. Then I am happy that we’ve made their day more interesting.

“I don’t recommend an open marriage for everyone,” she says. “It takes humility, commitment and self-searching. It means checking in with your primary partner regularly about what you’re feeling.”

Conover says a lot of people in the queer community know how to be “poly” more easily than heterosexuals “because we’ve been used to being on the fringes.”

But Conover says there are still feelings involved in this kind of relationship and “News flash: you can cheat on someone in a polyamorous relationship.”

That happens, she says, when people act sneaky about it. Everything must be out in the open for a poly lifestyle to work. “My husband and I have been through infidelity in our open marriage. That’s a tough one to explain to my hetero girlfriends.”

Fifteen years in, though, they’re still happily married.

Even the hustle of the back and forth between Woodville and Toronto seems to be working for them.

When in Toronto and other major cities, you can sometimes catch Conover touring with Les Femmes Fatales, Canada’s premier women-of-colour burlesque troupe.

The big city has also been kind to her television aspirations, with several shows to her credit, including One Queen, Five Queers, streaming on Crave. “It’s all about sex, relationships, love. It’s more risqué than a lot of people want to hear,” she says. “I told my father, ‘You don’t want to watch it.’”

Then there’s The Succulent Six on CBC Gem or YouTube, from 2018, a show about body-positive heroes who

encourage people to love how they look. The six episodes are more family friendly, according to Conover.

She steers things back to her farm and says I should see their place sometime. She starts to paint a picture of a very normal farm life. Oh, except for the no-clothes thing.

“Clothes are like prisons. I am naked all the time.”

I make a note it’s best to call before visiting.

The boisterous nudist and plus-size model says there’s lots to do on the farm. First and foremost, there’s caring for her horses, all of them massive draught geldings. On the day we met, she was off to pick up her fourth — her biggest yet, at 19 hands high. (Back in 2007 when she got engaged, she didn’t get a ring — she got an engagement horse, which is just what she requested.)

Aside from the equine focus she loves doing archery and axe throwing on the farm and walking around breathing fire for photo shoots. It also comes in handy on the stage — a gift that’s in her blood, since her late mother also had this talent.

For Conover, it’s all about keeping “wonder” in her life. “Kids do that naturally. For adults, we need to work on that.”

Excuse us — we’re gassy

When my husband retired, he needed a project and our house needed an energy upgrade. At the time, both the federal and provincial governments offered rebates for installing energy-efficient windows and doors, or adding insulation, so he did all of the above. Then we messed it all up. We installed a high-efficiency gas furnace.

Why was that a mistake? Because it replaced our 23-year-old electric heat pump and backup electric furnace. Our energy rating for the house before the reno was 72 out of 100.

After doing all this work? The same ­­— all because of that polluting gas furnace.

Natural gas, like coal or oil, is a fossil fuel. When it is burned, it helps heat up the planet.

You can argue that at least fossil gas burns cleaner than oil or coal. True. But since it’s mostly methane, gas is nasty when it leaks. Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

I actually wanted one — I liked that instant heat.

But along with that flame comes more toxic indoor air. Increasingly, studies show that houses with gas stoves have higher levels of carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide (N02). Higher N02 levels increase asthma in kids, among other health problems.

A recent editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine recommend-ed that new gas appliances be removed from the market.

We know we have to end our love affair with fossil fuels and reduce emissions, including from heating and cooling buildings. In Ontario, our homes and businesses are our third-largest source of pollution.

Jurisdictions including Quebec, Vancouver and New York City are already moving to ban the use of gas and oil in all new buildings, with most eventually extending the ban to replacement furnaces.

Last May the International Energy Agency

recommended bans on fossil fuel-powered heating systems, saying the path to net-zero means all electricity grids must be fossil-fuel free by 2040. (Net zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere.)

Unfortunately, Ontario is going in the opposite direction by dramatically expanding natural gas use. In 2017, as little as four per cent of our electricity was from fossil gas. In 2020 it was about seven per cent. By 2040 projections show 25 per cent of Ontario’s power will be from dirty natural gas.

What we can do: • Tell our provincial politicians we want to leave a healthier province for our kids by increasing the amount of power from renewable energy and storage, cheap hydro power from Quebec while also increasing a focus on energy conservation.

• When replacing home heating systems, water heaters or stoves, consider electric. Heat pumps provide both heat and lower-cost air conditioning in one unit. An induction stovetop can boil water faster than gas and uses less electricity than regular electric.

• We can encourage our provincial government to offer rebates for such things as heat pumps, and to help municipalities offer low-cost loans for their purchase, paid back on the property tax bill. Halton Hills near Toronto and Saskatoon have both embraced this idea. So have Saskatoon and other communities.

On Feb. 28, the United Nations issued its bleakest warning yet on climate breakdown and the dire need for immediate action.

It’s definitely time for Ontario to change direction and get less gassy.

Dear Susan, Good question. The tofu that I cook with is fresh, not dried. I have never found it to be an effective substitute for meat in any recipe. The texture and flavour are all wrong. My preference is to cook it in recipes designed for its use. I’ve included a few of my favourite tips for cooking with tofu.

Tofu Tips 1. This tip came from a Thai chef in Peterborough. Cut the tofu into cubes.

Put 1/2 tablespoon of salt in a heatproof bowl, pour boiling water over it, stir to dissolve the salt then add the tofu chunks. Let sit until the water is cool. Drain thoroughly. Fry quickly in hot oil for a crispy skin if you like; otherwise, just add it to the recipe that you are using.

2. Marinating tofu is more successful if you cut it into slices and press it for a bit before marinating. The pressed tofu is able to absorb moisture from the marinade. I find that this works best with firm tofu.

3. Use the kind of tofu suggested in your recipe. Silken and extra firm cannot be exchanged for each other.

4. Use it in side dishes until you have found the preparation method you like the best.

As a side note, mushrooms are a nice substitute in many meat-based dishes: oyster mushrooms for chicken, portobello for beef. The taste is different but the colour and texture work well..

A brilliant sunrise decks the skies over Lindsay one spring morning 60, 70 or 80 years ago as the rhythmic clip-clop-clip-clop of horse hooves reverberates on a quiet residential avenue. Trailing behind the horse is a large metal non-motorized van painted white or pale yellow. It eases to a stop in front of each home, and a distinguished-looking gentleman descends from an open door in the side. In his hands he carefully bears a metal rack loaded with half a dozen or so glistening glass bottles full of milk. He climbs the steps of an old wooden porch and without any fanfare dutifully deposits a pint or a quart in a little cupboard adjacent to the front door. He hurries back to his van and moves on to the next house.

A couple of hours later the families living in this neighbourhood will be pouring milk into bowls of Cheerios or Corn Flakes — or mixing it into a morning cup of tea.

The milkman was once a cultural icon in North America, not least in small towns such as those here in Kawartha Lakes. Names such as Bob Dainard (Silverwood’s Dairy), Joseph Hutton (Hutton’s Highland Dairy) and Norm Snook (Silverwood’s Dairy) are fondly remembered by their former customers.

While there is undoubtedly a certain old-world charm about the friendly milkman making his morning rounds, the job was not without its difficulties. Especially in the early 20th century, milkmen could be the targets of

criticism from unhappy consumers.

Freedom: Not an idiot in a hot tub

Remember back last fall when some of us were getting hopeful for 2022, after a very difficult year and a half?

The Delta COVID variant was plateauing, vaccination rates were climbing and there seemed to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Well, that light ended up being an oncoming train, in the form of the Omicron variant. And oh yeah, a war in Europe.

The hits just keep coming. A local mental health care provider I know says they have never been so busy. A lot of us aren’t in a great place after whatever you want to call 2020–21. (I have some suggested names but none of them are suitable for a family magazine.)

At least with spring starting to pop we will get nature’s reminder of renewal and life, even if our news feed is reminding us of the exact opposite.

And here’s some news: COVID isn’t over. With the removal of restrictions we will all get to pretend things are normal again. But this is normalcy cosplay; it’s not real. We have never, ever defeated a disease by achieving herd immunity. It’s not how disease and viruses work. Living with COVID means neighbours dying with COVID. Removing some of the easiest non-pharmaceutical interventions like masking and vaccine passports or failing to concentrate on other easy ones (like improved ventilation) almost guarantees a sixth wave. This isn’t me saying this; this is the many, many epidemiology experts who warned us well in advance of waves two through five. As I write this, 37 million Chinese citizens are under lockdown — and not the half-assed inconveniences that whiners called lockdowns here. Trends in Asia and Europe are looking troubling with the BA.2 subvariant. The alarm bells are ringing, whether we want to hear them or not.

Worse than the political motivation of changing COVID policies is placing the emphasis on individuals alone. Don’t get me wrong; citizens should be responsible for their actions. But people who deny science and are fed a constant diet of Russian-produced disinformation are going to make different choices than most of us. Sadly though, this minority is being catered to by our provincial leaders. Every vote counts, as they say.

Meanwhile, war rages in central Europe. The brave people of Ukraine have shown us what being a true freedom fighter is. It isn’t being an idiot in a hot tub. It is risking everything you have, including your life, to fight actual tyranny.

(Tyranny is bombing children’s hospitals. Tyranny has nothing to do with being told to wear a mask at Wendy’s so that other people can live.)

I so hope I am wrong, but 2022 might not be done with us yet in the bad news department. But here’s wishing that the beauty and wonder of spring will help us all to find some warmth and joy. Slava Ukraini!

$20,000 given by FLATO Developments to Cameron-area school

New playground equipment to be purchased Fenelon Township Public School principal, Greg Arkwright, says he was “shocked” when he got a phone call about three weeks ago from FLATO Developments, letting him know his school was green lit for a big donation of $20,000 from the builder.

“I was amazed and thankful that a company like FLATO is able to help us out,” said Arkwright. The school will be investing the money in new playground equipment.

“The students in our school will be able to play on this structure for years to come,” the principal said.

For Shakir Rehmatullah, president of FLATO Developments, this is part and parcel of how Flato responds to community needs wherever they’re building.

“At FLATO we believe in supporting the communities where we build.”

“School is a very important part of community so we’re excited to support Fenelon Township school,” he said.

FLATO’s president says he has four little kids and when I see them playing, that’s a special thing. So I know the money is going in the right place and we’re excited to support the school in Cameron,” he said.

Councillor Doug Elmslie said the school’s playground is the only one in Cameron. “A lot of our rural areas, where there aren’t city amenities, count on school playgrounds, so this is just a wonderful thing. It’s great for the whole community.”

Mayor Andy Letham said “you can’t lose when you’re investing in kids.”

“They’re our future.”

Letham said this is a good example of what differentiates FLATO from other builders who are just here to build.

“They’re showing they want to be a part of our community when they do things like this. We look forward to working with FLATO.” FLATO recently gave a large donation to the Academy Theatre of $1,125,000 over 15 years. They’ve also made donations to Ross Memorial Hospital and Kawartha Lakes Food Source, among other community causes.
