Canada will become stronger by confronting racism, inequities

Thank you for focusing on Black lives in your September issue of the Advocate. Canadians are polite, deferential, and cheerful to a fault. Scratch the veneer and Canadian institutions and society in general, exhibit a massive fault line of white supremacy that’s bedrock deep.

Lest I cast stones southward I remember Canada’s slave trade, racial and gender profiling, and the abysmal subjugation, maltreatment and abuse of First Nation and Inuit peoples. Born white, I seek to set aside what I think I know; rid myself of tropes, preconceptions, outright lies and misrepresentations. I listen with attentive mind, an open heart, without bias or judgement; learn the lived experiences of marginalized Canadians of colour; First Nations and Inuit peoples. Hear their painful history of life on reserves and inner cities, abject poverty, appalling living conditions, isolated in unsustainable areas; no medical care or potable water, children ripped away from family and culture through the residential school system.

If Canadians focus on learning the lived experiences of people of differing colours, creeds, sexual orientations and those with mental and physical challenges we will, I hope, learn how to address entrenched inequality, inequities and ignorance that have kept Peyton Caldoza contributed to these people from our September edition. their place at the table. Then, I believe, Canada as a nation will become far stronger. There is much work ahead for those who care. If I do not speak out when I see injustice, I understand I am complicit. How much richer would Canada be, more wondrous as a nation if the diversity of all its cultures, creeds and all its colours were accepted and woven into the fabric of this great land?

Local residents take action to improve nursing home care

Santa Day cancelled The COVID pandemic has even affected Santa.

Fenelon Falls’ muchloved Santa Day, usually held in late November, has been cancelled.

Concerned residents from Haliburton County and Kawartha Lakes have banded together to form the Haliburton-CKL Long-Term Care Coalition to campaign for changes to nursing homes, both in Ontario and nationally.

Bonnie Roe, co-chair of the group, notes the coalition supports and includes front-line long-term care workers. The group took action following the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in local nursing homes in Kawartha Lakes this past spring and evacuation of a Haliburton nursing home due to a leaking roof last year.

Members want to see long-term care included in the Canada Health Act to ensure public funding and apply national standards.

They want the recommendations of the Registered Nursing Association of Ontario implemented. These include things like increasing staffing to ensure at least four hours per day of direct care per resident; improving workloads, working conditions, and conditions for care; increasing infection prevention and control and nurse practitioner expertise in care; and enhancing specialized expertise in long-term care leadership.

The coalition also says the culture of long-term care needs to become more resident-centred and rights-based.

Finally, members of the coalition are calling for an end to using private sector, for-profit companies for new nursing homes in Ontario. They would also like longterm care homes to consider using other models of care for older adults, such as the feelings-focused “butterfly” model.

Morrison Nicholls honoured by Insurance Business Canada

Marlene Morrison Nicholls, owner of Stewart Morrison Insurance, has been honoured by Insurance Business Canada (IBC) as one of 45 women who are changing the gender balance of Canada’s insurance industry.

About 40 per cent of those honoured hold executive level positions, from CEOs and owners to directors and department heads.

“These 45 women have proved themselves capable of overcoming stubborn cultural and societal obstacles to achieve any goal,” according to a statement from IBC. “As they forge a path for future generations of insurance professionals through today’s especially challenging economic climate, IBC is proud to highlight their individual achievements and contributions to the industry.”

Union Station is a condominium complex at the corner of Victoria Avenue South and Glenelg Street West in Lindsay that is part of the railway lands development. Its sister building is about to be built right beside it — and it’s already half full without a single brick being laid yet.

Lindsay’s LifeLabs fiasco

Since we launched the Advocate three years ago, we’ve never had so many people call or email to suggest we do the same story. The obscenely long wait times at LifeLabs in Lindsay — the only community bloodwork lab in Kawartha Lakes — has left far too many people frustrated and troubled.

They are frustrated because people — mostly seniors — are literally waiting hours to get bloodwork, or even to do something as simple as dropping off a completed home testing kit. They are troubled because they’re wondering what winter will bring and how they can possibly cope under such conditions.

It was difficult to hear people in line speak of the miserable times they have endured, whether in the unrelenting sun at the apex of summer, or in the cold rain as autumn ascends. Middle-aged clients spoke of witnessing seniors who depend on canes practically falling over from sheer exhaustion.

This is not an indictment of the individual people who work there. It is clear to everyone I spoke with for the story (which you can read on page 20), that staff members are run off their feet and doing the best they can in an imperfect system.

The only people capable of turning that system around are those in charge of LifeLabs.

People must get bloodwork done, and if they’re not in hospital, the only place to get it done is LifeLabs, which unfortunately makes it an essential part of our health care system. But because LifeLabs is a private company, its shareholders’ needs come before those of the people needing its services. It’s a situation that should never have been allowed to happen — and one that the provincial government must work to fix.

Yes, some of this is undoubtedly caused by new protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic, and by staff turnovers. But many described long wait times pre-pandemic, too. LifeLabs must work harder, then — through hiring incentives such as increased wages — anything to ensure that the people are served first, not LifeLabs’ investors.

Why did LifeLabs ever close its other location located near Giant Tiger? Four years ago, LifeLabs closed locations in 15 communities along with testing facilities in Ottawa, London and Thorold. The hours of operation were cut at 53 others, according to media reports at the time. As well, 122 people lost their jobs. By eliminating more community access points where bloodwork could be done, LifeLabs saved lots of money on the backs of the people they supposedly serve.

It is clear to any senior who has experienced such wait times that Lindsay requires another community lab — something the Advocate will fight for. By press time, MPP Laurie Scott had not returned my email asking her to comment for this article. Help us fight to make this change by calling Scott at (705) 324-6654.

This government did not cause the current fiasco, but it has the chance to fix it.

Trash talk Recycling programs across Canada have been a failure. Canada recycles just nine per cent of its plastics, while the rest is dumped in landfill, incinerated, or ends up as litter. In 2000, when Kawartha Lakes first started a city-wide recycling program, all seven types of plastics were recycled.

Now almost none are eligible. Additionally, takeout coffee cups, Styrofoam, and aerosol cans are no longer permissible under the city’s new waste contract with Canada Fibers Ltd. Since the pandemic began, data were tracked across Ontario’s municipalities and the findings show that waste production has increased compared to 2019 figures. Waste management workers have been collecting a provincial average of four per cent more residential garbage and 12 per cent more residential green bin materials, with blue box collections remaining stable.

Ontario is set to introduce a producer-pay model in 2023. This means companies will be responsible for managing and paying for the full life cycle of their products, which this page supports in theory. However, it is unclear how this will operate, what accountability producers will have, and which waste items will be included.

Kerri Snoddy, regulatory compliance officer with the city’s environmental services department has told the Advocate the program will be enforced by the provincial government with specifics expected this fall.

Snoddy admits there is only about 15 years left of capacity at the Lindsay Ops landfill and four more years of capacity at the Fenelon landfill. She says there are three other landfill sites in the city that can be used well into the future.

We would hope that this producer-accountability framework sparks some creative thinking about waste in general. About 50 per cent of Canada’s waste is compostable — but Kawartha Lakes lacks a municipally-run, curbside-pick-up, composting service. The city will review composting feasibility again in 2021. If it’s determined, once again, that we are too small in numbers for such a service, why not investigate teaming up with other smaller jurisdictions to see if this can create an economy of scale to make it happen?

LETTER SPOTLIGHT A drive through our history

I want to thank Ian McKechnie for his fine report on his bicycle trip to the Fleetwood area. (“Cycling Through Time,” Aug. issue). So close to Lindsay where I have now lived for the last few years.

I travel a lot, every week on side roads, to see the countryside. I watched how the wind turbines were installed. I travel with my little Volkswagen Beetle many side roads but the Fleetwood area I had never visited.

My friend Mary and I, we went to Bethany and took road #38 to Omemee and sure enough we found Lifford Road. Soon we saw the Grandy Tavern and a cemetery. There is Beers Road, Bethany Hill Road and dozens more. So beautiful to see the Ontario countryside. I cannot go on bicycle trips anymore.

I loved all my bikes but now the old knees cannot take it.

Mental health has suffered during pandemic, but help is available JACK VEITCH Jack Veitch is the manager of community engagement and education with the Canadian Mental Health Association for the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge region.

Every year approximately 4,000 Canadians die by suicide, averaging nearly 11 people every single day.

Suicide has been an issue that has impacted all genders, races and ethnicities around the world for centuries.

However, with the onset of a global pandemic in early 2020, suicide measurements also saw a change.

When lockdown procedures were initiated throughout Ontario and most of Canada in March, many new issues arose for the mental health of Canadians. We saw increased rates of isolation, lack of access to health care resources and even limited essential toiletries, just to name a few challenges. The Canadian Mental Health Association’s national office conducted a survey of Ontarians in May 2020 to see how these struggles were impacting the mental health of Canadians and the results, while not necessarily surprising, were concerning.

Seven out of 10 Ontarians believed the province was headed for a “serious mental health crisis” as we moved through the pandemic, and nearly eight out of 10 said more mental health supports would be necessary to help society. Concerns regarding risk of suicide presented as well.

In 2019, 2.5 per cent of Canadians reported having had suicidal thoughts within the previous year. By comparison, in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic in May, 6 per cent had recently experienced thoughts or feelings of suicide.

Suicide does not discriminate. While there may be groups with a higher statistical risk of suicide, no group is free of risk. With that said, there are many things people can do to try to create suicide-safer communities. These can include being aware of the warning signs of suicide

and knowing how to direct them to appropriate care.

CMHA encourages people to seek out education surrounding suicide intervention. These include educational programs known as safeTALK, ASIST and Mental Health First Aid, which you can learn more about by visiting our website or calling. While the pandemic has made the delivery of these courses difficult, there are still some fundamentals of which we can all be aware.

Help is available. If for any reason you or someone you love may be experiencing thoughts of suicide, direct them to care immediately. This could be a family doctor, a mental health professional, a mental health crisis line or even a local emergency room. Directing that person towards care immediately creates the best chance for that person to get help.

Providing care to loved ones who have felt the personal effect of suicide is essential as well.

While we may never live in a society complete free of suicide, we can certainly strive to work together to create suicide-safer communities for everyone.

Tending the rural economy }} Local entrepreneurs say that while they appreciate the city’s support, the needs of businesses outside the towns and villages require special attention

Although the bigger communities in Kawartha Lakes — Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls and Lindsay — are often seen as the focus of the local economy, globalization means that they are unlikely ever to return to the days of large-scale manufacturing facilities such as Fleetwood or Viskase. Economic development now means nurturing smaller operations, many of them located outside our population centres. That in turn means thinking differently about how to support these rural businesses.

Rebecca Mustard, the city’s economic development manager, says that while her department still works to attract big companies, supporting small, existing business is at least as important as what she calls “smokestack-chasing.”

She’s referring to the old way of thinking about economic development.

The cautionary example is the town of Racine, Wisconsin, which has a population comparable to that of Kawartha Lakes. In 2017, Racine persuaded Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn — best known for making iPhones and other Apple devices — to build a factory there.

The state’s governor came up with a subsidy and tax-break package totalling almost $3 billion U.S. to attract the company, but Foxconn didn’t live up to the original terms of the agreement.

Instead, it built a smaller factory that used robotic assembly lines, ultimately creating far fewer jobs than promised.

Wooing a major company is not the only road to jobs and prosperity. Though

less glamorous, supporting smaller businesses already firmly rooted in the local community and looking to expand can produce significant dividends. Those companies are also much less likely to leave town for a better offer.

Economists say that 70 per cent of new jobs come from existing businesses.

Helping them and encouraging local people looking to start an enterprise — something known as “economic gardening” — is a big focus of Kawartha Lakes’ economic development department.

Mustard points out that there are all kinds of people who want to start their own business. “And that’s great. We want to help provide them with a foundation that ensures they will start strong and remain viable.”

Her department runs programs like Summer Company and Starter Company Plus, providing seed money and advice for young people and new business owners of any age who are taking their first stab at entrepreneurship.

Mark Imrie of the Imrie Group, a Woodville-area company offering haulage, excavation, septic and landscaping services, is a graduate of both programs.

He found the pairings with two mentors arranged by the economic development department to be particularly useful.

“I got a great variety of information.

We had monthly meetings and I got really good advice on running a business, marketing, and setting up a website.”

Dan Kitchen owns Make Stuff Move, located near Argyle. The company creates sets of real tools and motors for use in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) education. The economic development department helped him with “getting the background stuff in place” to co-host an event called Invent Make Play with local non-profit Pinnquaq Association.

“They just in general seem to have an open-door policy and are always willing to share info to help grow businesses,” says Kitchen.

Not everyone has had a similarly positive experience though. One business owner in the northern part of Kawartha Lakes says she is disappointed that more isn’t being done for rural areas, such as “cutting development fees, streamlining building permits, or promoting skilled trades to improve the local labour force.” (The Advocate has withheld her name upon request due to her position in the community.)

Besides its programs for entrepreneurs, Mustard also points to the Arts and Heritage Trail as an example of economic development in rural areas. The trail was launched in 2017 to enhance awareness of the city’s heritage and the wide variety of museums, historic sites, artist’s studios and galleries located in Kawartha Lakes.

ONLINE INEQUITY Much of the training the economic development department provides is only available online, meaning it is not equally available to all. Even before the COVID-19 outbreak, the department’s offerings for local entrepreneurs were heavily focused on webinars and other internet-based training sessions. For businesses located where high-speed internet is unavailable, though, such opportunities are completely inaccessible.

Mark and Judy Spurr own Quaker Oaks Farm near Sebright and are participants in the Arts and Heritage Trail. They say they’ve been told flat out by Bell Canada that economies of scale ensure they will never have highspeed service where they live, so the city’s online programs are out of their reach. Similar scenarios play out all over Kawartha Lakes, and even businesses that pay for high-speed access may not be any further ahead.

As reported in the July Advocate, the Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunications Commission has identified a speed of 50 mbps upload and 10 Mbps download with unlimited data — often shortened to 50/10 — as the minimum for individuals and businesses to be able to take full advantage of critical online functions such as streaming high-definition video and using cloud-based software and storage.

One business owner in the northern part of the city says he can only dream of such service, pointing to wildly varying upload and download speeds at his rural location.

Just one company provides internet service where he lives.

While he finds his speeds at 2 a.m. are acceptable (occasionally reading 10 megabytes per second), during the day they are routinely around 1 to 2 mbps.

He sees the same thing every day after supper as people turn to video streaming for their evening’s entertainment. “My service degrades to virtually unusable … like .1 to .5 mbps, and we are frequently disconnected from the tower. This makes streaming or video-conferencing an impossibility, and even basic browsing a challenge. A speed of .1 mbps is 1 kilobyte per second … or about the speed of the dial-up modem I was using 25 years ago.”

Such poor service is a major barrier for rural businesses.

In fact, this particular entrepreneur was so concerned that he would actually lose business if people were to know the challenges he faces in something as basic as completing the timely electronic transfer of documents, that the Advocate agreed not to identify him or his company.

A reliable, affordable high-speed network is as essential as a transportation network, business owners say.

Rural business owners may see some light at the end of the tunnel, however; the city has thrown its support behind an initiative to bring faster internet to the city in co-operation with the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN). It is seeking federal and provincial support to deliver ultra-fast internet to homes and businesses in the region through a $1.6 billion public-private partnership.

Frustration building over long wait times at Lindsay’s LifeLabs }} Private operator is the sole provider of community bloodwork in city

Outrage over long wait times at Lindsay’s LifeLabs — the only such laboratory in Kawartha Lakes — is growing.

The Advocate received several emails and calls from residents who are increasingly frustrated not only with the wait times but with the conditions of their wait.

According to several people who were standing in line in mid-September, chairs are not provided for those who may need a break from standing and people are forced to be outside, even in inclement weather.

Gary Hamilton simply had to pick a home test kit up from LifeLabs in Lindsay, but, like everyone else, he was in a line that stretched outside to the edge of the parking lot.When he’s ready to bring the package back, he’ll have to stand in line again.

“They’re saying it’ll be an hour and 15 minutes today,” he told the Advocate, but lines have been known to last well over two hours at the location on Angeline St. S. Hamilton must go to the Angeline Street lab once every two months. Others endure these visits far more frequently, depending on their medical needs. “This isn’t right,” he said. “I’ve seen people with canes falling over.”

The Advocate paid several visits to LifeLabs over the span of a week in mid-September, and saw long lineups in every case.We requested comment from management at the location, but no one appeared. We called the main call centre phone number, but an automated message indicated staff were too busy to answer the phone and that callers should try again later. We then contacted LifeLabs’ head office and were told someone would comment — but that it would take six days. However, the corporation didn’t even respond at all in the end.

Although LifeLabs has an online system to ensure an appointment for tests, it often has no availability for several weeks at a time. For instance, in early September, not a single appointment was available for the rest of the month.

The company’s website also shows typical wait times at its facilities. On one day in mid-September, the wait in Uxbridge was 16 minutes, in Oshawa 8 minutes and in Lindsay 40 minutes.

LifeLabs is the largest Canadian laboratory services provider. It’s a for-profit, private corporation indirectly owned by OMERS Administration Corporation, which in turn is connected to the pension fund for public employees such as school board and municipal workers.

Hamilton suggested Premier Doug Ford should be paying attention. “I think Ford needs to leave Toronto once in a while and see things like this. All I ever see is GTA stuff being worried about, like transportation.”

Kim Peel, from Fenelon Falls, decided to abandon her place in the lineup. Fighting breast cancer, she usually gets her bloodwork done at Lakeridge Health Centre in Oshawa where the wait is typically 15 minutes, she says.

To make it more convenient for her this time, Lakeridge issued a requisition for her to give a blood sample locally, at the Lindsay LifeLabs. “This is not more convenient,” she said, gesturing toward the lineup. “It’s insane. I’m 57 but many here are 75 and up,” she notes.

Some older people are dropped off, she points out, not realizing they will be led through the building to join the long line outside.

“I’d rather drive to Oshawa in comfort,” and have a quick appointment, Peel said, rather than be stuck in in line.

Pru LaFreniere comes every three months to LifeLabs in Lindsay. She recently waited for an hour before she was turned away because she had no requisition.

The Lindsay resident said they “have to do something” to alleviate the lineup for older people. “With a little more thought I’m sure they could operate this better.”

Muriel Herkner waited in the hot sun for an hour and a half the last time she had to visit. “It wasn’t fun — and their telephones never seem to work,” she said, noting she has to stop by once a month.

Several people in line said they recalled when Ross Memorial Hospital used to do bloodwork. The Advocate emailed Amanda Carvalho, communications and public affairs officer at RMH, to ask when and why that ended.

She confirmed there was a lab for community bloodwork.

“Approximately a decade ago, the Ministry of Health directed most hospitals across the province to provide lab testing only for patients registered with the hospital (inpatient, Emergency Department and outpatient clinics). Bloodwork for the community was shifted to labs such as LifeLabs,” she said.

That was under the watch of Dalton McGuinty’s Liberal government.

While pathology and microbiology testing were moved to Peterborough Regional Health Centre a few years ago, a so-called “core services lab” still exists at RMH but is not available to members of the community who are not in hospital.

The Advocate emailed MPP Laurie Scott’s office for comment but did not receive a response.

Janice Richmond was one of the people who emailed to the Advocate to say something needs to be done about the long lineups at the private lab. “I have seen frail people in wheelchairs and walkers waiting in the line. Maybe they should be moving into mall space?” she wrote.

She said she recently asked a staff member at the LifeLabs door about the fact that colder weather will soon be here and what the plan was. The reply she received: “I have no idea how we will handle the winter.”

1. The Doctor’s House Tall trees obscure much of this striking home on the northern edge of Janetville — nicknamed for the physicians who lived in it for much of its history — but it’s worth stopping to admire the architecture. There are lovely views of farms and woods as you continue south.

2. Pigeon River Headwaters

This lesser-known spot rewards you for braving the terribly rough road in — don’t try it unless your vehicle’s undercarriage has good clearance.

Take Century Farm Road south from Hwy 7A and turn left just over the little bridge. It’s nearly a kilometre to the parking lot, but from there you’ll encounter few other people on the peaceful, well-marked trails. The soaring cedars and mossy logs make it feel a bit like British Columbia. Oh, and do not try to reach it by coming west on Gray Road from the highway, even if your GPS tells you it’s possible.

3. Pontypool Grain Elevator Local volunteers deserve huge credit for saving this 1918 wooden structure, the last of its kind in Ontario. Visitors aren’t allowed inside yet, but there are restoration plans underway. It’s still definitely worth a visit to see — and photograph — the grain elevator standing like a sentinel beside the abandoned railway tracks. From Hwy. 35, take Telecom Rd. east, then make a quick right on John St. and turn west again on Pontypool Rd. just over the tracks.

4. Wind turbines

I’m well aware that not everyone shares my admiration for these marvels of environmental technology — if you despise them, please feel free to skip to the next item. But if, like me, you are mesmerized by the graceful sculpture-like quality of wind turbines, you’ll be fascinated by the chance to get up close to them and discover how quiet and majestic they are. From Hwy. 35, turn east on Ballyduff Road to the point where it broadens out into a circle. Park out of the way and walk north on Wild Turkey Road.

If, like me, you enjoy the peace and history of a small rural cemetery, pay a visit to St. Mary’s Cemetery on Lifford Rd., the cemetery at Ballyduff Presbyterian Church on Ballyduff Rd., and the fascinating Bethel (Old Methodist) Cemetery on the north side of Golf Course Rd. immediately west of Hwy. 35.

5. Ballyduff Trails Ralph McKim and Jean Garsonnin have opened their breathtaking property on the height of the Oak Ridges Moraine to anyone wishing to hike, snowshoe or cross-country ski. After walking barely half of the network of trails, I can assure you they’re magical.

From the stone foundation of an old homestead and a patch of tall-grass prairie to a stand of distinctive black locust trees through poplar, pine and deciduous bushes to the gently trickling stream dubbed La Source, the beautifully maintained trails wind through a gorgeous range of ecosystems that will nurture your soul. In cooperation with Kawartha Land Trust, the couple have worked to reintroduce displaced native species pushed out by settlement — McKim continues to pull out invasive sumac and dog-strangling vine and seed the land with species that belong here.

You can drive in their laneway at 851 Ballyduff Rd.; park in on your left near the woodpiles in the open grassy area. It should go without saying, but respect the fact that you’re on private property — stay on the trails and don’t litter.

6. Fleetwood Creek

Natural Area

That same open area at the height of Ballyduff Rd. is also where you should leave your vehicle for this stop. I can’t overstate this: Don’t take your vehicle farther down Ballyduff Rd. It looks okay at the top but soon becomes a deeply rutted, rocky track that only an off-road vehicle should attempt.

As long as you’ve factored in that additional 10-minute hike down the road just to get to the Fleetwood Creek trailhead, you’re assured of a lovely outing. With rain threatening, I only walked the Valley Trail as far as the lookout; my first thought when I arrived was “I have to come back here in the fall!” As I hiked back up to my car, a soft whuffing sound stopped me in my tracks. Wait — was that a bear? I searched my brain for the right thing to do in this encounter

7. Aunt Laura’s Tea Room Don’t worry when you turn in the laneway and drive up to what appears to be someone’s house.

It is Kathleen Morton’s home, and as the fifth generation in her family to live there, she wants to welcome you in the spirit of Aunt Laura. (She also runs a cow-calf operation and is deeply involved with local history.) Until Thanksgiving, food is available Thursday to Saturday from 11:00 to 2:00 for takeout or to enjoy at an outdoor table.Watch for flags and a sign on the south side of the road at 1402 Hwy. 7A.

8. Wutai Shan

It’s kind of hard to fathom the extent of this project, but when it’s finished — possibly sometime in 2021 — it will be nothing short of astonishing.

Walking trails, a huge lake, a gigantic wooden temple assembled without nails … I can’t wait to see it. But in the meantime, if you stop to marve at the shining temple and sculptures, you won’t be alone. People are already drawn to the site, which is still blocked off, to take photos of the giant statues nestled into the hills.

Local MP Jamie Schmale is settling into his new role as shadow minister for Families, Children and Social Development. He was named to the post on Sept. 8 by Conservative Party of Canada leader Erin O’Toole.

“I’m grateful to be able to serve the constituents of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, and all Canadians on this file,” Schmale said in a media release.

“We are in an unprecedented time in our nation’s history. Families are struggling, youth are underemployed and understandably there is anxiety about what the future may hold. It is imperative that we listen to what Canadians are saying as we address housing and rental affordability, the cost of raising children and take steps to make life more affordable for families.”

Prior to being named to his new position Schmale served as shadow minister for Crown-Indigenous Relations.

“Together, with the rest of the Conservative team, we will be holding this government to account,” Schmale added.

“Our families and children are the bedrock of our society and I will work hard every day on their behalf.”

CITY GETS $1.7 MILLION FROM FEDS, PROVINCE, TO HELP FUND LINDSAY TRANSIT

Kawartha Lakes received about $1.7 million in funding from the Canadian government and the province for the renovation and expansion of Lindsay’s bus maintenance facility. This includes seven new conventional buses (five to replace retiring vehicles and two to expand the fleet) and a new transit hub. There will also be 20 additional transit stops, along with more bike racks and bike corrals as well as upgrades to transit software that is expected to improve transit efficiency.

The federal government contributed more than $946,000, the province more than $788,000, and the city is spending more than $1.1 million – for a total of $2, 856,000. The infrastructure money supports 30 public transit projects around central, north and southern Ontario.

New associate at Staples & Swain has Lindsay roots Waylon Skinner gets really fired up over injustice.

As a young lawyer who has just become an Associate at Staples & Swain in Lindsay, he’s certainly in the right place. Skinner graduated from Queen’s University last year and did his articling in Cambridge — but he’s no stranger to Lindsay, where he was born and raised.

Skinner attended Leslie Frost P.S. and then I.E. Weldon Secondary School, and then completed his undergraduate Business degree at Western University in London before law school at Queen’s.

Although he’s been away for nearly a decade, he still has family here and visited frequently. He’s got the pulse of the city, in other words, something law partners Heather Richardson and Angus McNeil noticed when he was brought on board to expand their team.

“He was so marvellously trained that he hit the ground running,” says Richardson, who saw in him the perfect opportunity to expand their team.

Skinner – who was called to the bar in May — is building a practice which focuses on helping clients with a wide variety of corporate matters, including incorporations, shareholder agreements, commercial lease agreements, and assisting with various employment matters.

He also helps clients navigate residential Real Estate transactions.

The new lawyer says he chose this path to make a positive difference in his community.

“I like the kind of work where I can give back. Working with small businesses in the area, for instance, is very satisfying,” he says, given how important they are as the backbone of the community.

Staples & Swain is not only growing in the number of lawyers representing the firm but in its physical space as well. Its location at 10 William St. S., in downtown Lindsay has expanded, now that the Lindsay Shoe Repair has closed. McNeil and Richardson see an opportunity for a main floor reception, a boardroom, and a chance to expand their skilled support staff.

“A healthy balance is important to all of us,” says McNeil, noting everyone has young families to spend time with.

Richardson agrees. “We want to expand mindfully and take our time with this.”

As for Skinner, his addition to the team seems like a natural progression for the firm — and it’s also a great opportunity to say hello to another Kawartha Lakes alumnus who has found his way home.

Wild ideas }} A place for hunting in a more

environmentally conscious world

Camouflage gear is not an unusual sight in Kawartha Lakes. Like many rural Ontario communities, hunting is part of our recreational history and has long kept retailers stocked with leaf-adorned bedspreads, decals and, yes, even masks.

But people don’t relate to hunting, or to hunters, like they once did. Despite hunters’ widespread presence in our community, a lot of folks are uncomfortable or even downright angry that some among us would go out of our way to kill an animal. Hunters are increasingly portrayed as behind the times, the strange and unfortunate remnants of a less progressive era. So, it raises the question — does hunting still have a place in our society?

As a lifelong hunter, I encounter this question from time to time, and part of my answer always seems to raise eyebrows. Hunting, I say, is a sustainable source of food. Hunting offers a unique opportunity to remove oneself from a corporate and notoriously problematic livestock system and enter into something not only per-

sonally rewarding, but environmentally conscientious.

For one thing, wild animals don’t represent an anthropogenic (human-made) source of greenhouse gas emissions. Due especially to livestock, commercial agriculture is now one of the world’s leading contributors to humanmade climate change. By consuming wild game, hunters can partially step outside of this system, effectively eliminating a portion of their personal carbon footprint (other than hunting-related transportation.) In contrast, plantbased diets usually replace calories that would otherwise come from meat with a crop of some sort and, while these generally have a much lower impact on the climate than livestock, they are still responsible for human-induced emissions.

Hunting can also be an opportunity to live a less invasive and wasteful lifestyle. Marcie Goldenburg is a local high school teacher and recent graduate of the Ontario Hunter Education Programwhose interest in hunting developed 15 years ago.

“In my 30s I moved out of Toronto to the Kawarthas and really got more connected to the outdoors. That’s when I thought ‘yeah, I really should get into hunting.’” For Goldenburg, interest in hunting has always stemmed from a desire to be less dependent on systems that generate vast amounts of waste, landscape change and overuse of our natural resources.

“I don’t want to strip the planet of its resources for a throwaway lifestyle … I wanted an alternative meat source and at first it was to go to free-range farmers, but that was so expensive and hard for me to access that I thought hunting would be a better option, especially since it allows the trees and the land to remain in their natural state.”

Despite a very real legacy of resource abuse, hunting has come a long way in North America. By the 19th century, unregulated market hunting had completely altered our natural landscape, driving species like the American buffalo to extinction and bringing countless others to the brink. Out of necessity, hunters and conservationists developed the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, a management framework which is now the foundation for all Canadian and U.S. fish and wildlife regulation. Thanks largely to this model, which has been imitated across the globe, 100 per cent of fishing and hunting revenue in Ontario goes into a special purposes account that can only be used for fish and wildlife management. In 2017, Ontario hunters and anglers contributed $71 million to this fund, accounting for two thirds of all provincial funding in fish and wildlife science, policy, enforcement, ecological rehabilitation and enhancement, licensing, and education. Hunters have also established some of North America’s largest non-profit conservation organizations, like Wildlife Habitat Canada, Ducks unlimited and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. With the help of groups like these, hunters have been an integral part of bringing back many of the vary species they once extirpated.

The trouble is, there are fewer and fewer hunters. Even with the new wave of sustainability-minded recruits, most provinces (and states) have been experiencing a steady decline in hunter participation since the late 1980s.

Locally, there are few places more directly affected by this than Nesbitt’s Meat Market. Owner Adam Hayward says that, while many local hunters still CONT’D ON PAGE 35

“Overall, we have seen numbers decrease over several years, especially in the last five or six.”

While he points out that it’s difficult to pin down an exact reason for the change, it has wide-ranging impacts.

On top of its financial implications for the world of conservation, having fewer hunters around may be an ideological issue. Hunting gives people a sense of value and connection to the natural landscape, as well as to their food. In an increasingly urban world, these qualities could mean the difference between tackling the great environmental issues of our time and complacency. For me, hunters are the natural-born champions of issues like climate change, partly for the potential that their lifestyle holds as a solution. As someone who spends much of the year outside, I don’t just bear witness to the changes our world is undergoing, I’m defined by them.

It would be naive to suggest that everyone should adopt this lifestyle, out of a desire to be sustainable or otherwise. Clearly, despite the benefits of increased hunter

recruitment, few resources on this earth could withstand humanity’s full attention. But the way forward, toward a greener future, is not likely to be created by one standalone solution that’s applicable to everyone.

It can only be a blend of ideas and lifestyle changes — a melting pot of stewardship.

I believe hunting has a place in that world. At the very least, it has a place in our community.

Kawartha Lakes Library system eliminates late fines DRIVE THROUGH + ONLINE AUCTION Public libraries in Kawartha Lakes have taken a historic step by eliminating late fines for borrowed material if it’s returned after the due date.

Over the past several years library systems throughout North America have been eliminating late fines.

There is a growing consensus that late fines punish those who most need library resources. While it might seem like removing late fines would discourage borrowers from returning items, the opposite has actually been the case. In a study of nine libraries that eliminated fines, there was no marked increase in late returns or longer wait times for holds. Instead, these libraries saw an increase in the number of borrowed items, fewer lost items, and an increase in the number of active library members.

“Our hope,” library CEO Jamie Anderson told the Advocate, “is that by being able to access the collection without fear of incurring fines we will be removing a lot of stress that some people feel.

“While for many of us overdue fines are small and not an economic burden, for others that $10 overdue fine is a big deal. In order to avoid that burden, they will just stop coming to the library. Having more people come to use the library only has positive results for the individual and the community,” he adds.

All late fines currently on members’ accounts will be waived at the end of September, and as of Oct. 1, patrons will not be charged overdue fines on library materials returned after their due date. However, the library will still be charging members for lost or damaged items.

In 2019, the library took in $9,000 in overdue fines.

This amount accounted for only 0.5 per cent of the library’s entire budget.

Stoddart Funeral Home manager has known since age 13 what path she’d take Visitors to Stoddart Funeral Home are sometimes taken aback to learn that the young woman they assume is, maybe, a receptionist, is in fact the funeral director.

That a young woman — Alison Lynch — is a funeral director shouldn’t be a surprise nowadays. When Alison completed the Funeral Service Education Program at Humber College, 110 of 114 in the program were women.

Her youth — and the amount of experience she possesses — are more surprising. She’s just turned 24 but has eight years of funeral home experience, going back to 2013 when she mystified her high school peers by arranging a co-op placement at Mackey Funeral Home.

Alison was outgoing, upbeat and sports-minded (she played hockey for the Ops Flames and Kawartha Coyotes and now runs regularly, including a 10 km race each summer with her brother and father). Why would she want to spend time in a funeral home?

“When I was eight my 16-year-old cousin died in a motor vehicle accident. My grandfather died a year later. The way my family was looked after by the funeral home was amazing and I wanted to help other families the way we were helped.

At another funeral, when I was 13, I told my mom, ALISON LYNCH, MANAGER ‘This is what I want to STODDART FUNERAL HOME do.’”

The placement went well. Alison began as a cleaner but worked her way up to overseeing visitations, greeting family members and, towards the end, preparing bodies for funerals.

She applied to Humber’s highly competitive and challenging program, from which only half to three-quarters graduate.

For her internship, Alison returned to Mackey Funeral Home and after graduating was hired with the job title Funeral Director and Prearrangement Specialist. Clearly Linden Mackey has played a big role in Alison’s career.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t be a funeral director if it wasn’t for Lindy,” she says. “He’s the funeral director I’d like to be.”

And clearly, that respect is mutual; in April, after he bought the Stoddart business, he installed Alison as manager.

Lots of responsibility for a 24-year-old. New administrative responsibilities as manager. But all the other responsibilities remain. Alison guides individuals looking to make prearrangements, meets with loved ones to make arrangements, looks after embalming, and oversees visitations and funerals.

The three funeral homes in town take turns responding to calls from police about unexpected deaths such as accidents and suicides. When it’s Alison’s turn, she will receive a call after a coroner has pronounced someone dead, go to the scene, and transport the body to Toronto for an autopsy.

Her work is emotionally and physically stressful.

The most difficult parts? Over the past months Alison has had to deal with COVID-related deaths, including donning full PPE, and the heartbreak of not being able to allow grieving friends and relatives to gather. Most wrenching, though, is the death of a child. “It’s so emotional for that family.”

It’s also difficult sitting down with families who have no idea of the wishes of their loved one, even whether they want to be buried or cremated. She’s a great believer in pre-planning; she pre-planned her own funeral when she was 16.

The rewards of being a funeral director? Knowing she’s provided what the deceased wanted. “It’s the last thing that can be done for them,” she notes. And, of course, responding to the needs of the grieving families; after all, that’s why she chose her career in the first place.

Hauntings, Halloween and History

}} October 31 can be a spooky time

The evening of July 16, 2020, saw me join my cousin and his girlfriend for a leisurely walk through historic Goderich, Ontario. A thick fog had rolled in from Lake Huron, draping itself over the town’s picturesque residential neighbourhood, which overlooks the water. So impenetrable was the mist that it was all but impossible to see the harbour below us.

Passing the imposing stone walls of the Huron Historic Gaol, we soon found ourselves standing almost in the shadows of a massive Victorian mansion on St. George’s Crescent. As the bell in Goderich’s courthouse struck the hour, a cat darted out from the darkness, ran across the street, and perched itself on a rock, staring straight at us. When we began to walk away, the feline began to follow, and no amount of picking up our pace could shake it off our tail. The fog thickened, and we took separate routes home to see if that would dissuade the meowing shadow from trailing us …

Reflecting on the whole scene afterward — the pea soup fog, the sinister-looking structures, the ominous bell, the creepy cat — my astutely observant cousin remarked, “It felt very Gothic; almost like something out of Edgar Allan Poe.” We are fast approaching that time of year when dramatic readings of Poe’s The Raven usually transpire on and off stages across the land (as was the case in 2016 at I.E. Weldon S.S., when drama students performed an original adaptation of The Raven for three soldout audiences). Such occasions are part and parcel of that one day in the

calendar year when we allow ourselves to be frightened for fun: Halloween.

Over the years, Halloween has come to encapsulate a variety of phenomena, traditions, legends and rituals.

Perhaps the most well-publicized of these are those stories of places in Kawartha Lakes that are reportedly haunted.

With its myriad of sharply angled gables, sweeping veranda, massive gates, and arboreous surroundings, Sir William MacKenzie’s mansion on Portage Road in Kirkfield checks off the right boxes for the look of a typical haunted house.

Inexplicable footsteps, voices and even the odd apparition have been reported at the site. Now a popular wedding venue called the Sir William MacKenzie Inn, it was built in 1888 for one of Canada’s wealthiest railway contractors.

Looking less like the haunted houses of popular imagination, but apparently just as spooky, is the plain-featured house at 33 Cambridge Street South in Lindsay.

Home to several businesses over the years, the building has prompted previous occupants to report paranormally-activated plumbing, lights that mysteriously turn on by themselves, and the inevitable sound of an ethereal presence pacing across the floor.

These are but a couple of examples; there are certainly more. Stories about a haunting at the Academy Theatre are well-known, as are tales about a “presence” in the former Victoria County Gaol. (About a year ago, I heard a loud “bang!” echo from one of the former cells for no readily apparent reason.)

Less frightening and more fun is trick-or-treating. One neighbour of ours, former Lindsay mayor Lorne Chester, used to require trick-or-treaters to tell him a story, sing him a song, or entertain him with a joke before goodies were pressed into the hands of waiting witches, ghouls and ghosts. Such an experience made trick-or-treating so much more memorable for countless children.

Of course, Halloween has appealed to each generation precisely because the traditions associated with it have rarely gone out of fashion. Growing up in Lindsay during the early 1960s, Karen Ford remembers the ritual of putting one’s costume together.

One neighbour of ours, “Our costumes were always homemade and deciding what to former Lindsay mayor be was always so fun,” she recalls.

For older youth, the real attraction of Halloween were not the treats, but rather the tricks. On Nov. 5, 1908, the Lindsay Watchman-Warder reported that “Hallowe’en passed off very quietly in Lindsay. There was little of the rowdyism and vandalism so rampant in years gone by.The special police sworn in had little to do, with the exception of chasing a few vivacious youngsters. No arrests were made.”

A few years later, though, in 1911, the Lindsay Post reported that, “a band of young hoodlums created havoc in the western part of town. Their sphere of operations was on Sussex, Melbourne, and Albert [streets], and they tore up wooden sidewalks as well as the narrow walks leading to private residences.

In places where the cement pavements were cracked, huge pieces were loosened and thrown into the ditch. This is carrying Hallowe’en pranks too far, and if the guilty ones are apprehended, severe punishment will be meted out.”

Halloween is bound to be different this year because of COVID-19.

Though putting on a mask will take on a whole new meaning come Oct. 31, we will continue to allow our appetites for the inexplicable to be whetted.

To misquote Poe in The Raven: “Let our hearts be still a moment and these mysteries explore.”

Seeking a little compassion in 2020

Normally I love the fall season. The beautiful colours, the different sights and sounds, the changes in the beautiful area that I am blessed to call home.

But there’s been too much change and upheaval for my taste in the last seven months. I find myself distracted from some natural rhythms that were hitherto hardwired. Instead of noticing a tree I’m standing next to in an incredible shade of red, I’m staring down at my phone fretting over the latest COVID-19 stats. Some days, if it weren’t for some amazing local photographers that I follow on Twitter, I could be described as unaware of my physical surroundings. Instead of vicariously reliving the excitement of going back to school through my kids, I am worried about wellness checks and the government’s double-speak on overcrowded classrooms.

I know I am not alone. I can see it in the eyes of every parent I know, in the faces of every business owner I talk to. Some of us are drinking too much.

Some of us are having mental health challenges. Some of us are isolated, angry, fearful or broke. Sure, I know some introverted friends who started baking or sewing in mid-March and haven’t looked back. But that’s not me, nor most people I talk to. (Shamefully, I have used exactly two cups of the five kilograms of flour I bought during the great flour shortage of April 2020.)

The non-COVID news hasn’t been helping: the impending climate crisis; the dumpster fire that is U.S. politics; the hyper-partisan political and cultural wars. It’s all just so exhausting.

To be clear, I am not complaining. Because of my privilege (and a bit of luck, touch wood) my family is doing okay, for which I give daily thanks. Like most people, we are adjusting to the new normal the best we can.

But it is clearly an emotional time. And now, more than ever, there are certain parties and politicians who are trying to appeal to my emotions. I’m being asked to help take Canada back. I’m being asked to get emotional over a statue or to care for a pipeline over our ecosystem. I am being asked to join an “us” to fight a “them.” With the meme-ification of political discourse, I am being pitched values like they were some newfangled chopping device, “as seen on TV!” But the last thing I need is more emotion. I don’t need to be soothed with vague promises of nationalism. No problem is going to be solved by persuading me to hate another politician.

I need the hate-filled echo chambers that pass for politics to be replaced by informed, compassionate and inclusive discussion and debate.

Sadly though, that may be too off-brand for 2020.
