Make no mistake — our empty streets do not tell of our retreat, but of our absolute resolve. Do not conflate our isolation for anything but our solidarity and unwavering courage. We need not move ourselves to have inexorable strength to vanquish you. We have solitary power, all that we need. This is not us avoiding this war; no, this is us winning. We’ll never relinquish in the name of fear, but only in the name of togetherness. We shall endure and prevail, as we always do. Life is stressful enough without believing in climate change I read “The farm meets climate crisis” by Sylvia Keesmaat in the April Advocate with curiosity because it surprises me that she still believes that a “climate crisis” exists.

Unlike farmers of the past, like those who endured the devastating droughts of the especially hot summers in the 1930s, today’s farmers have many advantages.

They are able to adapt to changing environmental conditions with the aid and productivity of powerful and versatile tractors, sophisticated machinery, fertilizers for every type of crop, and the Internet which readily provides access to copious amounts of land management and other types of useful information available at their fingertips.

All of this has been created to help farmers conquer Mother Nature’s surprises.

During the current COVID pandemic and all of the economic aftershocks that are sure to follow, life will be stressful enough without piling on counterproductive climate-change fears, not just for farmers, but for all citizens.

Our mom has been in Adelaide Place for the past three years. During many times in the winter and spring they faced lockdown, due to influenza. Now a larger virus has created further isolation and even quarantine for some involved.

With residents being isolated (as I write this) I want to give a shoutout to staff at this wonderful facility. They plan surprise things to help their residents get through hardtimes and involve family members as well. We have to remember those stuck in rooms with perhaps not a lot of interests are not able to socialize like they so love to do. It’s the staff members at Adelaide Place who create ideas to help their residents get through.

Our mom talks of the great meals but mostly the huge smiles of those delivering the food. It’s a difficult time for us all and it’s so stressful knowing we can’t be together, wishing this was over.

We know our mom, along with all residents at Adelaide, are being treated so kindly and are getting three meals, plus snacks, plus smiles and surprises to come.

Thank you to all the great staff at Adelaide Place.

National media ‘vultures’

The impact on Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon of having the national media descend on them like vultures worries me. Now that there are long term care facilities in the cities that are struggling with COVID-19 they are not in the news. Which is probably good in any possible perspective. But the effects of being creeped with cameras and speculated about as irresponsible will last in the minds of the staff and families forever.

How can we hold the bully press to account for their vastly more empathetic treatment of the bigger, newer, city-based facilities?

New group aims to increase local urban canopy

Concerned local citizens have formed a new organization to increase the urban tree canopy in Kawartha Lakes. Canopy Project Kawartha Lakes (CPKL) plans to increase the amount of tree coverage in the settled areas of the city — Lindsay, Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon, Omemee and other towns and villages in Kawartha Lakes. The urban tree canopy refers to the layer branches, stems and leaves that cover the ground as seen from above.

As John Ireland, one of CPKL’s founders, explains, “many studies show that increasing the urban forest helps mitigate storm water damage, decrease pollution and home energy consumption, and increase property values.” As Ireland explains, trees can absorb a lot of rainwater, reducing the cost and effects of storm water runoff. Well-placed shade trees can actually lower the air temperature, reducing the need for air conditioning in warmer months.

“The mental health benefits of an urban forest, not to mention the opportunities to address food insecurity by the strategic planting of fruit trees are also incredible benefits. And these are benefits that will be enjoyed by the generations to come,” he adds.

The group is well into the planning phase of its first project and is meeting with community partners with the goal of using education, advocacy and hands-on projects to increase the number and quality of trees in the city. With local businesses forced to close or reduce their hours amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the recently launched FanSaves Helps Gift Certificate Program will give business owners a boost across the country and in Kawartha Lakes.

The program is completely free for businesses to take part in, while encouraging social distancing and allowing businesses to stay afloat and generate revenue during the pandemic.

The Icelandic fish sticks revelation

Common sense is apparently what my grandmother had and what I lacked, at least as a child. This information was often relayed to me at her rural Apsley home many decades ago, when I would spend time with her almost every summer. If I acted too much the smart aleck she would remind me of how much I still didn’t know.

The Oxford dictionary defines common sense as “the ability to think about things in a practical way and make sensible decisions.”

I wish my grandmother had been consulted in the 1980s, when business leaders and economists decided in earnest then that the supply chain economy was the way to go.

To save pennies per unit on whatever was to be manufactured, companies determined what small component could be created most cheaply in any given country. Then airplanes, ships and transport trucks would be used to have all these base components meet up somewhere (usually China) to construct the unit itself — the most plum part of the assignment given that it created the most jobs.

Back home we’d eagerly wait for whatever was made so we could buy it, after our own manufacturing base was gutted, our middle class shredded, and our environment became sullied by those same airplanes, ships, and transport trucks that brought these goods to market.

But hey, we saved a bit of money on our stuff, right? And we figured out how to maximize corporate profits, too, which exacerbated inequality and ensured workers’ wages, when adjusted for inflation, were kept at 1970s levels, even while our education levels rose. Smarter and dumber, I bet grandmother would have observed.

As we’re discovering in this pandemic, we realize we’ve lost not only our capabilities but a good deal of our national pride along the way.

What can we do about this? For starters, the federal government should go further than encouraging the private sector to create what we need. It’s time to establish some strategic Crown corporations and figure out what we can do well — especially for our core needs as a society, like health care, food and defence production.

In the past 30 years we’ve bought into the notion only the private sector knows how to do business. It’s simply not true. As our Second World War effort showed we are more than capable of vigorous, government-led enterprises that could be intelligently designed and profitable — for all of us as Canadians, not just for corporations.

A few years ago Joli and I were in Iceland, where we learned how a local fishery operated. It was Icelandic fish they were pulling off their boats — fish battered in Iceland, put in an Icelandic box that had been printed by an Icelandic printer.

My grandmother would have appreciated their old-fashioned common sense.

Sheltering at home means a chance to observe the birds of Kawartha Lakes

The beautiful wood duck can be found in wetlands from Ontario to Florida.

I was out of breath as I burst through the door. “Kids, come quick,” I managed to gasp out. “There’s a couple of sandhill cranes in the neighbour’s field!”

My daughter lazily turned the page of her book and, without looking up, said with the patience of youth, “Mom, calm down; we’ve seen them lots of times before.”

I could feel my lecturing voice come on. “Maybe you don’t realize it, but I was 40 years old before I saw a sandhill crane for the first time …”

They both kept reading, clearly unimpressed.

Sandhill cranes, bobolinks, merlins, hooded mergansers, wood ducks, woodcocks — the birds that populate the dreams of birding enthusiasts — all live here, in our midst, cheek by jowl (or should that be beak by fowl?) with the sparrows, blue jays, and house finches that we commonly find in our yards.

Perhaps you have seen them. Perhaps you have made your way out to the marshes of the Ken Reid or Pigeon River Headwaters conservation areas and seen the common yellowthroat or the belted kingfisher. Perhaps you have climbed the trails of the Windy Ridge or the Fleetwood Creek conservation areas and seen the chickadees come when you call.

Or perhaps you have been to that mecca of birdwatching — the Carden Alvar — in search of the endangered loggerhead shrike. The Carden Alvar, with its unique ecosystem, is a flat limestone landscape. On this vast plain are alvars — places where globally imperilled native grasses and wildflowers grow, and which occur only in southern Sweden and around the Great Lakes Basin.

The Carden Alvar has almost religious overtones for birders in Ontario — birders like Hendrik Hart, who used to come up five or six times every spring when he was younger. He would stay at a local hotel and spend every day from 5 a.m. to dusk watching for the rare birds that make the alvar their home: upland sandpipers, blue-winged warblers, and the snipe that seemed particularly attracted to the deep and wide potholes on Wylie Road.

While city-dwellers like Hart have to make a special trip to enjoy the rich birdwatching opportunities of the Kawartha Lakes, those of us who live here have a privilege that many birders can only dream of. We are able to engage in the slow, patient observation of many species throughout the seasons.

Farmers are especially well placed: attentiveness to the weather and the needs of farm animals goes hand in hand with attentiveness to happenings in field, treeline and marsh. A trip to the barn at dawn and dusk — when birds are most active — creates opportunities to observe bird behaviour day in and day out.

Take those sandhill cranes that failed to impress my children. Joanne Lindsay, who farms in Cameron, can pinpoint the day when the sandhill cranes return to her farm every year. “Their voice is so loud, and projects so far,” she says, “you can hear them long before you see them.

Once you hear them, you need to be patient and you will see them fly over.” They make a series of rattling bugle calls, each lasting a couple of seconds and often threaded together. The sandhill cranes return to nest in the same spot on the edge of the swamp every year, and each year Lindsay knows how many young they have.

She also sees them walking amongst the cattle in her pastures.

While the sandhill cranes return each year of their own accord, there are also birds that Lindsay attracts commonly to her feeder: chickadees, house sparrows, downy and hairy woodpeckers, blue jays and cardinals. And there are a few birds that don’t come to the feeder but that she also listens and watches for: the barn swallows and jenny wren (also known as a house wren), beloved of her late partner Graham.

While it might seem as though those who live outside of urban areas have a better chance at seeing a variety of birds, that isn’t necessarily true. In fact, in this time of sheltering in place due to COVID-19, we all have the advantage of being able to pay more attention to the birds that live in and around our neighbourhoods.

With a bird feeder or two, anyone can see some common birds in their own backyard — even in the bustling metropolis of Lindsay. Eric Davis, one of the directors of the Kawartha Field Naturalists, recommends black oil sunflower seed as a good all-round seed that many birds like, including woodpeckers. If you put the feeder on a metal pole, with a metal shield partway up, squirrels will be thwarted from cleaning out your feeder.

(Another option is to feed the squirrels — they are fond of peanuts). Davis has one caution about feeders: it is best not to keep feeding the birds when the trees have leafed out, he suggests. Bears can be attracted to bird feeders, and hawks can hide in the foliage and prey on younger birds.

Davis recommends that you begin by just watching the birds. How do they behave and interact? Note what they look like and see if you can identify them. Birds that are more common in a built-up environment include starlings, blackbirds, robins, blue jays, house sparrows and sometimes cardinals. Davis notes that there are merlins in Lindsay. (Merlins are falcons that need a tall perch.)

A Message from the Publisher

Local news is more essential than ever As journalists, we tend to see our community in stories.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re more aware than ever that our community has amazing stories worth sharing.

There’s the story of our front line health care workers, who are the linchpins of this fight. Their courage is evident day after day as they put others’ needs first.

There’s the story of our vulnerable loved ones in long-term care and retirement homes, who hope to once again spend time with their families.

There’s the fact that our local politicians are in uncharted waters, navigating an emergency on a scale they’ve never witnessed.

Anxious small business owners have stories, too — women and men who thrive on their connection with all of us and who fear for their livelihood and their employees’ well-being.

We don’t want to run the latest press releases — we want to keep reporting, analyzing, and digging deeper.

Groundbreaking micro-needle technology developed in Lakefield

delivery issues to underserved populations worldwide, removing the negatives of sharp disposal, dosage, and pain.

PKA SoftTouch Corp. of Lakefield has launched a public equity crowdfunding campaign for its globallypatented groundbreaking micro-needle technology that may play a key role in delivering a vaccine to battle COVID-19.

“During this time of a global pandemic, the need to create fast painless vaccine delivery in pre-measured quantities has never been greater,” says Dick Crawford, PKA Board Chair and CEO. “We need to move quickly.”

On March 31, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for “made-in-Canada solutions” for desperately needed medical supplies in the face of COVID-19.

During his daily briefing, the prime minister predicted “madein-Canada supply chains” will emerge to get supplies into the hands of health-care professionals.

Crawford says the thumb-sized Micro-Needle has the potential to deliver pain medication and insulin as well as vaccines and does so with painless delivery and instant disposability, eliminating fear, needle phobia and disposal issues.

Meanwhile, in the global rush to create a vaccine against the coronavirus which is killing thousands around the world, 35 vaccine producers and academic institutions are fast-tracking clinical trials to meet the urgent need, according to a recent report in The Guardian.

The equity crowdfunding campaign (found at www. frontfundr.com/company/pka) has an initial short-term funding need of $412,000, and will concentrate first on animal clinical trials. This will be followed quickly by human clinical trials. The campaign is hosted by Vancouver-based equity crowdfunding platform Frontfundr. The campaign enables small investors to participate in the company’s future growth prospects in a market estimated at $779 billion worldwide for vaccines prior to the onset of COVID-19.

The Micro-Needle works for both humans and animals, and the animal health drug market in Canada alone is on track to reach $1.3 billion by 2024, Crawford notes. “We are confident that once we pass the final clinical trials, pharmaceutical suppliers anxious to quickly retool manufacturing to produce the devices, will step forward to license our technology.”

Clinical trials will be conducted at the University of Guelph, Ontario, and Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket, Ontario.

Vegetable gardening for newbies

If you’re thinking of growing your own vegetables at home, you’re not alone. Google searches for “vegetable garden” are twice as popular as usual and St. Catharines-based Stokes Seeds has been so overwhelmed with orders that for a while it suspended sales to home gardeners.

No wonder. There’s never been a more opportune time to begin. The pandemic has rendered many of us housebound. Gardening offers healthy exercise, a connection to the natural world, and the ultimate in fresh and nutritious food at a reasonable cost.

Ahh — just imagine ripe tomatoes and tender salad greens. Easy to picture them, but growing them requires skills and knowledge. There are rookie mistakes that many fall into.

To help, we consulted local experts Roger Hill (of Hill’s Florists and Greenhouses), Sylvia Keesmaat (lead gardener at Russet House Farm and a contributor to the Advocate), Bev Delenardo (master gardener and Lindsay Farmers Market vendor) and Jack Kyle (Lindsay Community Garden stalwart).

Here, then, are the most common errors and how to avoid them.

Thinking big Often, too big. As one popular piece of gardening lore goes, “Picture the smallest garden you can possibly get away with. Then make it half that size.”

“Widow-makers” is what Hill calls gardens started by overly ambitious retirees. It’s easy to get carried away.

If you don’t already have a garden, try constructing a rectangular, raised bed on your lawn by hammering together 10-inch non-pressure-treated boards. In a frame five or six by 12 feet long you can grow a surprising amount, and with that width, you can reach it all from the outside, meaning you’d never have to compress the soil by stepping into it. Put down a barrier (Hill suggests landscape cloth; Keesmaat a layer of cardboard), set your frame in place, fill with topsoil or triple mix, and you’re set. If you have compost to work in, or some shredded leaves, all the better.

If you don’t have a yard or space in the yard, try large pots filled with potting soil to grow some herbs or a few veggies. Just remember that sun and wind dry out the soil in pots, so be prepared to water frequently.

You could also contact your local community garden about available plots. At Lindsay’s community garden at Frost Campus, you get a prepared space, access to water, tools, wheelbarrows and support from other gardeners.

Wrong Place: Most vegetables need sun, ideally full sun all day, says Kyle. (An exception Keesmaat notes: lettuce, spinach and peas prefer a little shade in the heat of summer). Locate your garden away from nearby trees (especially walnuts, which can be harmful to nearby plants) and septic beds.

Overcrowding: This was the mistake Delenardo’s son made with his first garden. A four-pack of zucchini seedlings can be held in the palm of your hand, but a single mature zucchini vine could occupy as much as 10-16 square feet, or about one to one-and-a-half square metres.

Check seed packets for information on spacing and how big the plants will eventually grow.

Square-foot gardening can help. Use string to divide your frame into one-foot squares (30 cm by 30 cm). Online guides will tell you each square could take, for example, 16 radishes or 9 spinach plants but only 1 pepper.

Wrong Plants: You should be growing what you and your family enjoy eating. But, that said, you’ll want vegetables that are easy to grow, compact, mature quickly, and give you a big return over an extended period.

HERE ARE PICKS OUR EXPERTS RECOMMEND:

• Salad greens (lettuce or spinach): Many, many varieties, all of them fast-growing.

• Radishes: Ready to pull in just three or four weeks and add some kick to a salad.

• Beans: Big, easy to sow seeds. Keesmaat suggest making a “teepee” from 6-10 long poles wound with string, and growing pole beans or a runner variety. Scarlet runner beans attract hummingbirds and the teepee can become a fort for kids.

• Tomatoes: Summer without tomatoes?

Unthinkable. Choose earlier-maturing varieties.

(Tip: cherry tomatoes mature in about 60 days and can produce hundreds of fruit; for beefsteak you might have to wait 90 days). Stake plants or grow them up a trellis to make efficient use of garden space.

• Onion sets: Mesh bags of these tiny bulbs are readily available each spring. Just push bulbs an inch down into the soil and you’ll have spring onion shoots within a week.

• Beets: You can eat the greens as well as the

beets themselves, which can be stored or pickled.

Other recommendations: cucumbers (grown up a trellis), kale or Swiss chard (both of which can produce for many months if you pick leaves and let more grow), peas, sweet peppers.

The beans and radishes should be sown directly into your garden. For most of the others you’re far better off buying packs of started seedlings at a farmers’ market (preferably) or garden centre. We’re into May, so that’s what you will have to do for tomatoes and peppers.

Planting Too Early: Vegetables can be divided into those that prefer to be planted in the cool season (peas and spinach for example) and those that need

to wait for planting until the warm season (beans, tomatoes, and peppers).

Not Giving Enough Attention: If we are sheltering in place, there’s no excuse for this one. Plants need regular watering — not too much and not too little — and gardens need weeding. For weeding, just get them early and stay on top of them. For a small plot it only takes a couple of minutes to scuff them with a hoe.

There’s a lot to learn about vegetable gardening.

Experience will be one teacher. You can also dig into Kawartha Lakes Library’s extensive digital offerings — e-books and videos.

Don’t let the possible missteps daunt you. You’re in for a richly rewarding experience. And if you make a few mistakes — as even the most experienced gardeners inevitably will? Well, most plants will still succeed. Like us, they have a will to survive.

WILD TURKEYS

In 1984, Ontario sent river otters to Missouri, ruffed grouse to New York and moose to Michigan in exchange for 274 wild turkeys, which had been extirpated (made locally extinct) in Ontario. Now, the province has more than 70,000 turkeys. Turkeys’ heads change colour with emotion or excitement, turning white, blue, pink and red.

Their daytime eyesight is three times better than that of humans, and they run up to 40 kilometres per hour. Only males (toms) gobble and spread their tail like a peacock.

The young (poults) forage for food within 24 hours of hatching. Groups of turkeys have many names, such as crop, gang, posse, dole and raffle.

You might like to keep track of what comes to your yard. If you do that every year, you will have some citizen science about bird population and behaviour in your area.

Another member of the Kawartha Field Naturalists, Robbie Preston, offers a few additional tips to help you identify birds. Take note of what the surrounding habitat is like: if there is water, you may be seeing a shorebird.

Birds like warblers like to shelter in shrubs. In general, there are four great ways to identify birds – size and shape, colour pattern, behaviour and the aforementioned habitat.

It is also important to pay attention to the time of year, according to Preston. Many birds have brighter and more vivid colouring in the spring than in the summer or winter. And don’t forget that female birds and juveniles are often less colourful than their male counterparts.

It is wise to pay attention to these differences.

If you would like to encourage birds to make a home in your garden rather than just visit a feeder for a while, it will be important to take the next step and plant trees and shrubs that will host the insects that birds need to feed to their offspring.

“All those seed-eating birds can’t feed seeds to their babies,” says Judy Kennedy, also a member of the field naturalists and a citizen scientist who contributes observations to the scientific community. “They have to feed their young caterpillars that have some protein. If you have trees like oaks, maples and pines, more birds will nest in your yard.” Smaller shrubs and wildflowers that will also attract insects for birds to eat include dogwood, nannyberry, red raspberry, wild bergamot, columbine, goldenrod and asters.

Shortly after my unsuccessful attempt to get my children to view sandhill cranes, we were driving down our gravel road. “Stop the car!” my daughter suddenly shouted. “Back up!” In our family this usually means a bird, so I obeyed — just in time to see a pileated woodpecker moving its way up a dead tree. It appears there are some birds that are still rare enough to impress my children.

As of April 1, no outdoor fires are permitted. Many citizens appear to be ignoring the ban; Kawartha Lakes fire crews were forced to respond to 25 callouts on the first weekend in April alone.

All trailer parks, campgrounds, Airbnbs and businesses that rent cottages to tourists are closed. The only Airbnb or cottage rentals allowed under the provincial legislation will be to health care workers who require accommodation after perhaps relocating to a new community or choosing to self-quarantine.

Garbage from the parks is not being picked up as limited staff is reassigned to more important duties. Any garbage left in park garbage cans will be treated as illegal dumping until parks reopen.

Meslin has little faith in the ability of our political parties to connect with citizens in meaningful ways.

He argues that transformation will require people inside and outside of the parties: people who value collaboration and know how to engage citizens wanting to make a difference.

“The situation is intolerable. Rather than creating spaces for political community, our parties are feeding apathy and cynicism. We can and must transform these organizations and reclaim our democratic space. It’s not an easy task, but it’s crucial.”

Meslin’s activism and analysis is not all about opposition. The beauty of Teardown is that it offers concrete examples of innovative actions and projects such as Alberta’s City Hall schools, Montreal’s borough councils and Student Vote, a youth engagement organization that conducts mock elections across Canada.

Our group in Haliburton endorsed Meslin’s proposal to lower the voting age to 16. While Meslin may underestimate how difficult it can be to influence secondary school course content from outside the educational system, his assertion that students should graduate with a deeper understanding of politics has merit. He then goes on to outline how students could participate in democratic opportunities during high school, laying the foundation for political engagement in adulthood.

A minor criticism of Teardown is its focus on urban environments. This is understandable given that Meslin’s work is in Toronto. While it would have been ideal to have some rural or small-town references, the ideas and thrust of the book have relevance for those of us living in rural areas. Our group was confident that we could apply what we learned to our small community.

If you are feeling despondent about the current state of politics, read this book. If you want to do something but haven’t got a focus, read this book.

Ideally, read it with some friends or acquaintances, because who knows where your discussions will lead? For the Concerned Citizens of Haliburton County we begin this year energized by Meslin’s call to collective action with a renewed sense that the power is in the people.

For now, let’s celebrate being home.

Baked Beans In 1894, Adam and Mary Potts built Sunnybrae’s on a sunny hill overlooking Cameron Lake near Brokenshire Shore. They raised sheep and specialized in weaving. They had seven daughters.

Cathy Freestone Bevis’s parents started cottaging in the area in the 1930s. Cathy always loved Sunnybrae’s and as they passed by she would say, “Oh, I would love to have that house someday!”.

She bought the house in 2000 and turned it in to a popular bed and breakfast called A Nesting Place. Cathy now has a seasonal shop, Feather Your Nest, on Northline Road.

Cathy still makes this baked bean recipe that has been passed down from the Pottses. The flavoured beans cook for 10 hours in a low temperature oven. Cathy substitutes brown sugar for white.

Someone’s grandfather and everyone’s neighbour

During the pandemic our library system has sustained us with all its digital offerings: ebooks, audiobooks and downloadable video and music. And to keep us engaged with the world outside our walls it’s even provided “Home for Coronovirus — Virtual Learning and Activities,” a curated set of links for kids and adults.

But for sure something’s been lost.

We spent March and April without our local library branches and more importantly without our branch librarians.

If libraries are the kitchen tables we gather around, it’s the librarians who make them the welcoming spaces they are, and ensure we find what’s to our taste.

If you’re from Omemee, it’s Bill Scholey you’re missing. Easy to conjure up his image, though, if you’re a library user there, or are from Norland (where he served as branch librarian for five years), Bethany (one year), Lindsay (some Sundays through the winter), or Fenelon Falls (where he and his wife, Bonnie, live, and where he started his library career, at age 64).

If you don’t know Bill, picture a vigorous grey-haired fellow in a sweater vest and checked shirt. If you’re imagining a shorter, stockier, longer-haired Mr. Rogers, add hornrimmed glasses and you’re not far off the mark. Someone’s grandfather, and everyone’s neighbour.

In each of his communities Bill worked hard to get to know people, learn how they were using the services, and see what he could do

to improve what the library offered. It’s an approach developed in his first career. For 35 years he worked for IBM, starting off at 19 as timekeeper on a factory floor and — after earning CPA and CMA accountancy credentials — taking on senior marketing and finance positions around the world. (“IBM,” he jokes, stands for

“I’ve Been Moved.”) There were five years in Indonesia, a spell as controller for the Caribbean and as chief financial officer for the company in Thailand, a stint in each of Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

That global experience has given him a unique perspective. He’s found that every community has its own distinctive culture but that, as he explains, “Whether it’s Norland, Omemee, Hanoi or Bangkok you find diversity, unique personalities, rich heritage, food-sharing, great senses of humour and perhaps most of all that you can enter a community as a stranger and become an accepted part of that community.”

Norland is a good example of how Bill has operated.

When he arrived he became a regular at the local coffee shop, Cafe Diem (now closed), and friends with the owner, who was running a book club. Bill began ordering book sets for the club. He met up with local history buffs and community members who were using the library building for euchre, yoga and exercise programs, and encouraged them to become library users. At the same time he made the library more inviting, setting up what he called a “power wall” to display new books, ensuring there was always a pot of coffee brewing, and making space for the book club and for a textile arts group whose knitting, hooked rugs and other products were put on display.

He’s endeared himself to library users in each of his communities and made a mark, most recently in Omemee. The number of library card-holders there has steadily increased and circulation (number of items borrowed) over the past 12 months matches the total over the previous four years. When consultants held a public meeting in Omemee for the library’s new strategic plan, the first question from the audience was, “You’re not going to take away our librarian are you?”

Building bonds happens one library visitor at a time.

From the vantage point of a comfortable library chair, here’s what I saw when I dropped in on Bill in two locations.

In Omemee, he stays on top of library administrivia at the circulation desk, facing the door. Whenever someone arrives, he greets them — almost invariably by name — starts to chat with them.

A little girl comes in with her mother. “Bill,” the girl asks, “can I do a jigsaw puzzle?” He’s happy to oblige.

Someone new arrives to take out a library card and Bill takes the time to give what he calls “Library 101.” He makes sure the new user knows about all the resources and how to use the catalogue, and is aware there’s

access to a 14-branch system, not just what’s on Omemee’s shelves.

In Lindsay on a quiet Sunday afternoon he chats with an older gentleman, helps him find Lee Child novels, recommends some similar writers he might enjoy, and lets him know library staff are there to help.

It’s a typical exchange.

With the pandemic closing down branches Bill, like the rest of us, has been sheltering in place with Bonnie. He’s been making steady use of library resources. There’s a book on the go for the Norland book club he still belongs to — Hillbilly Elegy, an account of a family and culture in crisis. There’s some Canadian humour — Terry Fallis’s Alba-tross — and Neil Pasricha’s upbeat You Are Awesome. For family viewing he’s chosen Big Miracle, based on a true story of the freeing of a family of trapped whales off Alaska.

Until we’re at whatever the new normal becomes, and librarians have again opened their doors to welcome us back in, here’s his message: “The people who make up each community and their continuing to be actively engaged is what I feel is the key to sustaining us through these difficult times.”

The Latest on the Flu:

}} A Snapshot of the 1918 Outbreak On November 1, 1918, five women boarded a train in Lindsay bound for Oshawa. Etta Graham, Aileen Hughes and Elsie Sutcliffe were members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), a corps of nursing aides organized by the Canadian Red Cross and the St. John Ambulance.

The VAD was instrumental in saving lives during the First World War, and the sight of a big red cross emblazoned across the side of an ambulance piloted by VAD personnel had become one of the most famous symbols of health care during that conflict and during the subsequent flu outbreak — much as the N95 face mask has in 2020.

Joined by two nurses from Ross Memorial Hospital, Etta, Aileen and Elsie were en route to a city beset by the ravages of the influenza pandemic, often referred to as the Spanish Flu. We can just about imagine the conversation taking place in that railway carriage as it rattles its way across a countryside resplendent in the colours of autumn…

“Well girls, what’s the latest on the flu?” Aileen asks.

Her colleagues are engrossed as Elsie reads from a newspaper purchased from the news butcher making his way through the train.

“Fenelon Falls is stepping up its measures,” she notes. “‘The Board of Health has issued orders that churches, schools, and pool rooms are to be closed on account of the influenza epidemic until further notice...’”

“It’s about time, too,” Aileen interrupts. “Why they didn’t do that a few weeks back is quite beyond me. Go on — what else does it say?”

Elsie clears her throat and continues. “‘While cases of ‘flu’ in the village are fortunately few and far between, the surrounding country contains a large number of cases, some of them being of quite a serious nature, and the local doctors are kept busy attending them.’”

“Few and far between,” Aileen repeats rhetorically. “The cases would have been fewer and farther between had ‘few and far between’ been the personal motto of every citizen.

The fewer people gathered and the farther apart they stand, the better.”

“The better for all of us,” Etta pipes up.“We don’t want to find ourselves in the same predicament as Minnie Crosier. Poor girl. She had only been working for two years.”

“Has she died?” Aileen asks. Minnie Crosier, a Lindsay-born nurse, is wellknown by many of the young women.

“Yes,” Etta replies. “And only 25 years old, too. She had been sick for almost a month, according to this item. ‘Together with influenza, pneumonia, and pleurisy developed, and with such serious complications the deceased lingered between life and death for the past few days,’” reads Etta. “She was conscious until the very end.”

“Isn’t that a shame!” exclaims Aileen. “Her family was so proud of her.

A real saint.”

“She had a brother and a sister, didn’t she?” asks Etta.

“Yes,” answers Aileen. “Charles and Dorothy. Charles was wounded during the war and taken prisoner, too. Oh, the poor family has had such a time over the past few years. I can’t imagine the grief they are enduring. The ‘flu’ is so indiscriminate in its choice of victims.”

“And they’re all so young,” Elsie comments. “Two more deaths have been reported in Bobcaygeon, and one only a year younger than Minnie.”

“Oh, who now?” Aileen says. “I have several friends in Bobcaygeon.”

“A Mrs. Moody,” says Etta, grabbing the paper from Elsie. “Twenty-four years old. Leaves behind a husband, and a little girl who now won’t have a mother to tuck her in at night.”

Silence falls over the carriage as Etta, Aileen, and Elsie contemplate the gravity of the situation. Normally, the Grand Trunk Railway’s Lindsay-toOshawa train is packed with people looking forward to visiting relatives in the latter’s bustling environs. Not so on this Tuesday morning. A few travelling salesmen stare blankly through the windows as autumn’s pastoral landscape flies by, its browns, golds, oranges and reds all blurring together like the passengers’ varied anxieties. The epidemic has caused quite the slump in business, and the salesmen are wary about paying visits to homes where the flu could be lurking invisibly in the lungs of prospective customers.

A grim situation awaits our three VAD friends when they step off the train in Oshawa, which has been hit particularly hard by the flu, with almost 80 deaths reported. Almost all of those who have died range in age from 20 to 40 years old — people in the prime of life cut down by a virus wreaking havoc around the globe.

Undeterred, Etta, Aileen, and Elsie got to work.

A few months later, Lindsay’s Medical Health Officer reported that of more than 1,000 cases of influenza which befell the town in the fall of 1918, some 21 people succumbed to its ravages. Within days of his report, a brand new isolation hospital will open at the southeast corner of Colborne and Angeline Streets. Funded and furnished in part by the Women’s Institute, the little white building would stand for decades as an enduring reminder of when the 20th century’s worst pandemic made its presence felt in Victoria County. More than 100 years later, the same spirit shown by Etta Graham, Aileen Hughes, Elsie Sutcliffe, Minnie Crosier and other carers lives on in today’s front-line workers.

The rise of civility

For a majority of Canadians the amount of co-operation among levels of government and traditional rivals at the start of the COVID-19 crisis was a refreshing sight.

With the national Conservative Party leadership vote postponed, some of the rear-view criticism of the government by the candidates subsided, if only a little. But nature and politics hate a vacuum, leaving Andrew Scheer regularly criticizing most decisions and taking credit for almost everything. As one commentator quipped, Scheer has come across as someone watching a house being painted who stands there saying “You missed a spot.” And Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre has been taking Monday morning quarterbacking to a new level.

But as the kids say, ”haters gonna hate.”

It seems for some the urge to stay partisan, even during a global crisis, is just too great. Even city councillor Pat Dunn has been retweeting Trump talking points.

But like the vast majority of Canadians — according to a recent poll — I think that the federal government has done a pretty good job rolling out the biggest program of spending and procurement ever attempted in peacetime.

Is the support system perfect? Of course not. Has it been improved by the input of all the political parties? Absolutely.

While I have appreciated Premier Doug Ford’s work and his willingness to consult the other parties at this most difficult of times, I am wary of the populist photo ops that seem to be increasing. Even the 40.5 per cent of Ontarians who voted for Ford probably didn’t vote for him to be a pickup-driving delivery person. And no offence to hard-working couriers, but he’s paid by us to take on bigger files.

We are called to come together now, and most of us are doing just that.

There will be time to question the wisdom of Ford’s planned $200-milliondollar cut to public health and his many other slashes to the health care system later. We are being reminded in painful ways: policies and the budgets that support them are important. Ford’s decision to have comprehensive resident quality inspections be completed for only 1.4 per cent of the total number of nursing homes in Ontario last year should be questioned. We can only hope the decision to cancel the dollar-an-hour raise to minimum wage and three paid sick days will be reviewed, given the glowing way in which the unsung heroes of the front line are being feted by the right.

And Ford’s suspension of all environmental reviews — apparently for the period of the pandemic only — should be watched cautiously for any abuse.

There will be time for all of this later: It’s all hands on deck now. Here’s hoping the extremely partisan will join those of us from many different viewpoints and just try to get through this together.
