The next several months may well be harder than
the last few, precisely because there are no more simple answers. “Go out and support local business and get exercise but be sure to respect physical distance and don’t get carried away,” is a lot more complicated than “Stay home.” Just as in the early days of the pandemic, even our best-informed decision-makers are trying to figure this all out as we go.
We’re all scared. We’re exhausted by the hyper-alertness in public places — no one more so than retail workers who must do their jobs while constantly backing away

people will revile us if we’re not wearing a mask. We desperately miss each other. Animal fight-or-flight instincts war with more enlightened tend-and-befriend ones as our heart’s desire to draw close to people conflicts with

PUBLIC LIBRARY DISCOVER WHAT’S NEW the new fear about personal contact that’s been hammered into our brains.
The ground has shifted under our feet once again, and that means we must once again find our balance. The unprecedented lockdown has given way to unprecedented restrictions and changes in our everyday lives, and that’s frustrating and stressful.
Of course, it’s weird to have to step off the rail trail when you see other hikers coming. It’s infuriating to see people gathering too closely and in groups that are too large when you’re trying to respect the ever-changing guidelines. It’s devastating that so many small businessowners, students, self-employed people, seniors, farmers and others don’t know their fate.
Which is why we’re all going to have to dig deep to find the patience, kindness and compassion that will
get us through this newly uncertain time. Solidarity with our community and care for each other aren’t one-time principles we abandon now that the worst may be over. And remember: We’ve made it this far. Saddened by the terrible toll, more aware of the social inequality that puts the poor and frail at risk, but we’re here.
As a podcast I love put it recently, “We’ll all get through this together, because it’s the only way we can get through this.” We’ve done great things over the past few months. We rose to the occasion, not just to keep ourselves healthy but to protect everyone else, too. Now we have a new occasion, and new heights to scale. And we’ll do it together.
