It was Lois Magahay, author of the article, and before that, a book, re: Lindsay’s Great Fire of 1861, who discovered the existence of one issue of the Lindsay Advocate from 1855.

Advocate helps spread message about feeding hungry children Just a quick note to say thank you. Because of The Advocate’s online story (‘New Summer Lunch Program Feeds Hungry Children’), I was on CBC Ontario Morning talking about the Summer Lunch Outreach Program.

A CBC staffer lives in Omemee and really enjoys the Advocate for its great information.

It helps to spread the word about the program, and hopefully will be an opportunity to raise funds, volunteers and food to continue to support it and to plant the idea in other communities. At the end of the day the goal is to provide a nutritious lunch to kids in the summer.

Guns not wanted at Carden Alvar Plain Today I visited the Carden Alvar Plain near Kirkfield for the first time. What a treasure we have in this conservancy. It is a rare and beautiful nature reserve that attracts people from around the globe to enjoy the birds, flowers, and nature trails. The Couchiching Conservancy has spent years developing this site as a safe haven for rare birds and wildlife.

I was surprised to find out there is a group interested in establishing a gun range in the vicinity of this nature preserve. Not only a shooting range but one that will have gun bays, containers for commando shooting, sniper leagues, night sight training, and the sale of many kinds of firearms including weapons of mass destruction. This is not the type of business the City of Kawartha Lakes needs. In fact, it is not the type of business that should be promoted in this municipality, province or country.

I have registered my opposition to our city councillors, mayor, MPP, and MP. I encourage anyone who agrees, to do the same.

tourism upfront Best Canoe Routes in Kawartha Lakes

The Gull River/Burnt River canoe routes are popular amongst paddlers. In Coboconk, the Gull River was often paddled by Group of Seven artist J.E.H. MacDonald. A “Paddle and Paint the Gull River” experience is currently being organized to showcase the paddling route frequented by this iconic Canadian artist.

Nogies Creek flows from Bass Lake to Pigeon Lake on the edge of Kawartha Lakes. This five km route (one way) is fully navigable in the early spring with plenty of pullovers and several rugged portages, including a mandatory portage around a hydroelectric dam to the south of the widening. The easiest way to experience this hidden gem is to explore the widening midway down the creek, which offers some amazing bird viewing. There is no fishing here because it is a muskellunge sanctuary.

Kawartha Lakes is home to four provincial parks: Balsam Lake Provincial Park, Emily Provincial Park, Indian Point Provincial Park and Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park.

Balsam Lake Provincial Park is the largest tourist attraction in Kawartha Lakes drawing in more visitors to the area than any other attraction. (Ontario Parks is celebrating their 125th Anniversary this year and Balsam Lake Provincial Park is celebrating their 50th Anniversary.)

As part of their 125th anniversary, Ontario parks are promoting five legacy projects across the province, the restoration and upgrade of the Balsam Lake Waterfront Trail is one of these five projects. This trail is popular amongst cyclists and a loved hiking trail for cottagers in the area. Balsam Lake Provincial Park has a fantastic beach that attracts day visitors

throughout the summer season and also hosts their own farmers market in July and August. Both this lake and Emily Provincial Park along the Pigeon River are popular fishing destinations for anglers looking for deep level launches with ample parking for truck and trailers.

Indian Point Provincial Park is known for featuring one of the longest undeveloped shorelines in the Kawartha Lakes region. This is an undeveloped park popular for backcountry camping and paddling.

Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park is a backcountry location known for is natural landscape. Ontario Parks designates it “a non-operating park with no maintained public facilities or services.”

GREAT TO BE HOME RODERICK BENNS, PUBLISHER

In the late 1970s or early 80s, you may have spotted a young boy with red hair and freckles fishing or catching crayfish near Lock 33 in Lindsay.That’s certainly a Norman Rockwell image of my childhood, I have to admit. (And my friend Mike Perry has called Lindsay “the Norman Rockwell town of the North.”)

There was road hockey in the winter near Queen Victoria Public School, summer walks by the river in Rivera Park, and the hourly chimes of St. Andrew’s Church from that 85-foot bell tower -- sometimes reminding me that I needed to get home for dinner.

Somewhat reluctantly, I left Kawartha Lakes for school, returning for two years to accept a job as a reporter with (then) Lindsay This Week until 1997. Life happens -- and it sometimes pulls us away. Families are started. Careers take us in various directions.

In my case, magazine editor, correspondent, nearly a decade with the Ministry of Education’s Student Achievement Division as senior writer, writing a few books, and generally making my way as a media entrepreneur.

Since launching The Lindsay Advocate last September online, from our home in Waterloo Region, it soon became obvious that the community was embracing our intent to build on the social and economic wellness of Kawartha Lakes. The vision took root swiftly and by March of this year we were able to launch our print magazine, in addition to our online platforms, and we immediately made plans to return.

Having family in the area has helped. My wife and daughter got to know Kawartha Lakes from our many visits here over the years and they easily saw the charm and opportunities it offered. This includes a fantastic education system for our daughter, with full-day French Immersion, and the International Baccalaureate program at I.E. Weldon S.S.

So -- about 21 years later -- I’ve finally found my way back to Kawartha Lakes, where all those early memories that are indelibly linked to place come to the forefront of my mind. Now, with family in tow, it’s even better of course and we have created a true family business based on our collective ideas and love for the area.We hope to bring our focus on news, community, and wellness for many years to come.

It’s still early days, but I have to say it’s great to be back. Perhaps more accurately, it’s great to be home.

Spiritualism and the New Age goes mainstream in Kawartha Lakes

They come from the Toronto area and Durham Region. They come from points north, east and west. In the heart of Bobcaygeon, population 3,500, they’re coming to be a part of the Kawartha Mediums’ Zen Den and the ‘New Age,’ spiritualist beliefs that underpin who they are, and what they stand for.

For anyone who has met the three women of the Zen Den, there is an instant understanding that they do not conduct themselves on the fringes of society, despite their expertise. While there are tarot cards and energy books for sale, readings and reiki, there is also an acute understanding of what some would call ‘the real world.’

While their metaphysical space is devoted to helping people achieve healing, transformation, empowerment, and personal growth, the ladies of the Zen Den do not attempt to operate above the earth plane, free from the confines of a so-called normal life.

After all, they are mothers, grandmothers, wives – and they embrace the community in which they live. The Kawartha Mediums are made up of Debra-Claire Kemp, Emalee Kemp (her daughter), and Christine Whelan. Debra and Emalee – the mediums -- conduct the vast majority of the readings, hold circles and teach others how to meditate, heal, develop their own intuition and discover more selfawareness. Christine Whelan “keeps everyone organized,” according to Emalee, and is doing some facilitation work as well.

At the Zen Den, the Kawartha Mediums conduct three ‘circles’ a week, touching over 240 people each month – and it’s growing.

“This has manifested into a movement where we are compelled to bring more education on spiritual growth and universal knowledge to our people,” says Emalee. “We accomplish this with a monthly learning series, workshops and through community and tourist events.”

Kawartha Mediums started over five years ago with a few family members and friends as a circle in a barn for healing. As the word spread the demand for their services increased they eventually found their space in the heart of Bobcaygeon.

One of the first big events they became known for three years ago was their annual summer psychic fair, this year being held July 29 at Kawartha Settlers’ Village. “With a wonderful landscape and well preserved history it really has the perfect energy and feel for such an event,” says Emalee.

The whole historical village is taken over to showcase readers, vendors, healers, kids’ activities and more.

Got to Have Faith

And what of the traditional religious beliefs of Canadians? Are they fading away? A 2017 poll conducted by the Angus Reid Institute in partnership with Faith in Canada 150, found there is still a solid core of faith that continues to shape Canada.

The poll found that 21 per cent of Canadians were “religiously committed,” meaning they hold a strong belief in God or a higher power and regularly attend religious

services, according to the National Post. At the other end of the spectrum, 19 per cent of Canadians are pure nonbelievers.

“Yet it is the swath in between, equally divided between what the pollster terms ‘privately faithful’ and ‘spiritually uncertain,’ that offers the greatest insight into Canadians’ evolving beliefs and practices,” according to the National Post story.

This swath accounted for a full 30 per cent of respondents. Perhaps it is this core of people – the spiritually uncertain – that the Kawartha Mediums are reaching. In an age of anxiety fueled by rapid technological change the Mediums – and others like them – may offer the kind of open, inclusive, and more immediate connection to spirit than the more rigorous traditional churches are known for.

As for the Mediums’ relationship to traditional churches in the area, Emalee says it has been nothing short of fantastic.

“As we strive to be as inclusive as possible and promote, partake and connect with local churches… we have received nothing but a warm and welcoming reception from them.”

As well, Debra is an active speaker and participant within the Spiritualist Churches of southern Ontario.

(Spiritualism is a religious philosophy with epistemological ties to older traditions – not to be confused with the more all-encompassing term ‘New Age.’)

“I also send my kids to various summer camps with the area churches,” says Emalee. “They get to meet good, caring people and it’s a nice experience for them.”

The extent to which the Kawartha Mediums have embedded themselves within their community is immediately impressive. For instance, Debra is the chair, Emalee the vice chair, and Christine the secretary for the Bobcaygeon Midnight Madness Committee. (It’s hard to get any more ‘real world’ than a midnight madness event.)

This is a huge tourism draw, and popular with locals, where thousands of people wander Main Street, Bolton Street and King Street between 7 pm and midnight, shopping, eating and partaking in the festivities. The event is completely funded by merchants and vendors who participate in the event.

funding, and promotional opportunities such as waterfront improvements, marketing, beautification, and events.

A division of Impact 32 is Vibrant Village.

Volunteers Emalee, Debra and Christine are heavily involved in this civic group, too, that works to improve the physical characteristics of the village. This includes hanging flower baskets on street posts in town and ensuring their maintenance, to the annual tree lighting event, winter basket creation, and more. Emalee applies for City of Kawartha Lakes grants each year to get funds for the initiatives, so that they don’t have to ask for money directly from the merchants in town.

“We know they (already) give so much,” she says.

The ‘paddle project’ is their newest initiative being launched this summer. The project was created “to showcase and add colour to even more of our beautiful community,” says Emalee.

The Kawartha Mediums have reached out to local volunteer organizations, local artists, schools, photographers, families and community members to paint paddles. (Full disclosure: The Lindsay Advocate is diligently working on their own paddle to contribute.)

The wood paddles were crafted by volunteers John Falls and Carol Eldridge and donated by Jermyn Lumber. The paddles will be hung on street poles along King, Main, Canal, and Bolton Streets. After the summer season is over they will be taken down and auctioned off for community members and merchants to bid on. Vibrant murals depicting the village’s heritage may next be on the horizon.

Emalee is also president of the local parent council for Bobcaygeon Public School where her own children attend. She serves as a director on the board of the Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce.

Right now the Mediums are working with the City of Kawartha Lakes’ Economic Development team on business expansion goals.

This will include an intuitive mentorship program, motivational speaking opportunities and a venue for a “complete spiritual experience” that drives local and tourist traffic alike.

People sometimes ask Emalee why she is so involved in grassroots activities in Bobcaygeon, as if the world of spirit, energy, and faith should perhaps be separate from the lives that we live each day.

“Kawartha Mediums’ intense level of community involvement derives from our unique perspective as mediums,” Emalee tells The Lindsay Advocate. “We are able to see, hear and feel what it means to have connection to a community. By being active members in the community, we have the opportunity to lead by example and therefore encourage so many people to take part in and achieve community goals that raise the vibration of the town as a whole.”

It’s also about her role as a parent, too.

“I tell them about my own children, and my hopes and dreams for them. I tell them about how I want my own kids to be proud of Bobcaygeon. This is our community and we want to help build it.”

Standing by the main picture window in the Zen Den, where the light is strong, Emalee looks toward the downtown.

“Beliefs aren’t so much ‘in the lines’ anymore. We’re all connected – we’re all really one.”

Olé! Canada’s first-ever bullfight 60 years ago in Lindsay

A boisterous crowd gathers in the Plaza del Toro in a charming small town, awaiting in rapt anticipation the entrance of the magnificent bull Ferdinand and wonders what might become of Matador Jorge Louis Bernal. Who will win -- man or beast? Will the bull be vanquished? Will the matador survive? A year of planning this ‘ballet in three acts’ by organizers in the small town has come down to these tense few minutes. Our scene is not set in some small Mexican pueblo. This bullring is constructed out of plywood and the setting is old Lindsay fairgrounds where almost 5,000 people have gathered to see Canada’s first bullfight. The year is 1958.

In addition of to being the stuff of local lore, the Lindsay Bullfight is a story of tourism promotion chutzpah, of coming up with a daring (some at the time said crazy) idea all for the purposes of putting the town -- and by extension the whole area -- ‘on the map.’ And it’s most certainly a story of organizational perseverance and determination.

Holding a large tourist event today seems to require money and cooperation from every level of government and it most certainly requires a buy-in from all the local stakeholders. This was most certainly not the case 60 years ago, when the Chamber of Commerce decided that Lindsay would hold an international festival featuring Canada’s first-ever bullfight.

The town wasn’t exactly bonded in civic unity over the event. At the time Lindsay had two local daily papers.

The Lindsay Daily Post questioned on its front page whether the event was “a farce in the making.” The Watchman-Warder was as pro-bullfight as the Post was against, predicting in breathless prose “Canada’s Biggest Event.”

In the months leading to the the event, the Post devoted noticeably small amounts of space questioning the spectacle as the Watchman-Warder extolled the event with 60-point headline type.

That a bullfight might not be suitable entertainment -- given the possible suffering of animals -- seemed as much of a matter of discussion then as it might be now.

The provincial SPCA was dead set against it, and the event was starting to be debated at the provincial level. The Chamber countered by promoting a bloodless bullfight: “Pity the Matador, Not the Bull” became their slogan in response to the growing criticism.

Officially, the town council was not in favour of it

and the Kiwanis Club of Lindsay was vocal in its opposition. And much to the consternation of the organizers, the Lindsay bullfight was being debated at Queen’s Park thanks in part to the SPCA’s loud disapproval.

The riding’s MPP at the time happened to be Premier of Ontario, Leslie Frost -- a master of smalltown politics. The Peterboro Review described Premier Frost as being on “the horns of a dilemma.”

“Everyone at home expects him to sanctify the ‘Big Show,’ The Peterboro Review continued. “But of course he can’t. His home town is split down the middle. Half want the bullfight. Half don’t. And both sides number many Conservative voters.”

Ever the deft politician, Frost handed the entire mess off to Attorney General Kelso Roberts to “wave the red flag” if necessary. Roberts ultimately allowed the fight to proceed but cautioned the Chamber in writing about the Criminal Code sections relating to animal cruelty and ‘unnecessary’ torture.

Local lawyer, A.M. Fulton, a Kiwanis member, declared: “if it’s a fight it’s against the law….if it isn’t, it’s fake!”

Undeterred -- and lead by such still-recognizable names as Bob Mark and Gord Mackey -- the Chamber continued to plan for their Civic Holiday event, with an initial budget of $12,500 (over $105,000 in 2018 dollars.)

They say the best way to make God laugh is to have a plan and the Chamber definitely had a big plan. They purchased ‘rain’ insurance from Lloyd of London. They brought four matadors to Lindsay on July 22, to much local fanfare (depending of course which paper you read) but then disaster struck when the six bulls destined for Lindsay were quarantined at the US-Mexico

border when a tick was found on one of the bulls. The event had to be postponed until the weekend of August 21-22, as costs mounted for the Chamber.

Tickets for the event ranged from $3 to $7 dollars ($26 - $71 today) -- a hefty sum given that Woolworth’s that week advertised a children’s suede coat for $4.97 and you could rent two bedrooms with a washroom in town for $25/month.

Mini-disasters were handled, and there were many, as they arose. Organizers found out an hour before the show that the female Matador -- who had said she was 21 -- was in fact 20 and not legally capable of signing the contract which required new arrangements. Interest in the bulls, who by now had had a month’s vacation in the Kawarthas, grew so much that organizers had to hire security at Jim Burleigh’s farm because nightly visitors were showing up “inebriated” thinking they could challenge the bulls.

But the slightly scaled-down event finally happened. The calypso band (perhaps a bit off the mark of a Mexican-themed event, but definitely ‘international’ for 1958 Lindsay) and the announcer (full disclosure: my great uncle) warmed up the crowd.

The crowd anxiously awaited the first bull…who did absolutely nothing. It could not be coaxed to fight. To the consternation of the five armed SPCA agents (sent to Lindsay to shoot the bulls if they were suffering) the crowd screamed “hamburger” and “kill it!”

The second bull refused to leave the ring after the ceremonial ‘kill.’ Every attempt to lure the bull out of the ring -- including using a local Holstein failed.

Lindsay Police Chief John Hunter took matters into his own hands and jumped in the ring and attempted to lasso the beast. The bull, now enraged smashed the Chief to the ground and then into the boards. The Toronto Telegraph reports that the crowd feared the worst: “He’s killed,’ was the cry. The Chief, though, walked away uninjured, crediting ‘the luck of the Irish’ to a Toronto paper. It is perhaps no wonder that many newspapers, when describing the organizers, included words like ‘harried,’ ‘ulcers,’ and ‘anxiety.’ Much to the organizers’ relief, the third and final bull ‘fought splendidly.’

The Watchmen-Warder noted that “Lindsay received more publicity and international attention than any place of its size in Canada.” The Post, in a large font gleefully declared “Report Bullfight Lost $9,000,”

almost $80,000 today. It was, as the venerable Val Sears described in the Toronto Telegram, “the goldarndest bullfight that ever was.” The Canadian Press newswire said the the bulls provided a “comic touch.” Even the erudite Globe and Mail weighed in, wondering about the fate of bulls.

Like much of this story, it ended with humour. Jack Conway, publicity director for the bullfight told a local paper “Remember when you’re eating your bologna next week that you saw it fighting!”

4 IMPORTANT TIPS FOR SELLING YOUR HOME (NC) This is a popular time for listing homes. Use these tips from the Real Estate Council of Ontario to get started.

1. Research potential agents. You'll want to find a registered real estate salesperson who is right for you. Shop around before you make a decision.

You could ask friends, family or coworkers for recommendations. Once you've made a shortlist of salespeople, talk to at least three of them. Sit down with them and ask about their real estate experience, references, services they provide, and how much they charge.

2. Look them up on the RECO website. Before you sign an agreement, read it and understand it thoroughly, and be sure to check out RECO's online search tool. It will tell you if your salesperson is registered and if they have any disciplinary action against them.

3. Decide on a selling approach. Many sellers are happy when their salesperson lists the home on the MLS, places a sign on the front lawn and shows it to interested buyers. Other sellers want more bells and whistles such as open houses, home staging, digital marketing or even advertising in high-end magazines. It's important that you and your salesperson are on the same page when it comes to marketing and selling your home. Keep in mind that the fees may vary, depending on services provided. Be sure to confirm if extra services like home staging are included in your agreement or if there will be additional charges.

4. Keep your home safe during open houses. An open house is an invitation for visitors to enter your home. Protect yourself by removing valuables and personal information, ensuring that guests are asked to show ID and making sure they're accompanied at all times. If you don't think holding an open house is right for you, tell your salesperson.

Keeping seniors at home and independent takes whole community effort RODERICK BENNS

Keeping seniors in their homes for as long as possible is not the work of any one, single community group. Even Community Care Network – with its 9,000 clients across Kawartha Lakes – can’t do it alone.

That’s why Mike Puffer, communications officer for Community Care Health and Care Network, says he likes to stress the word ‘network’ when it comes to all that they do. It takes a whole community to meet the needs of seniors, he says, especially when the work is centred on ensuring as much independence for people as possible as they age.

Puffer points out that Kawartha Lakes is 50 per cent higher than the provincial average in terms of the number of seniors living here. (Nearby Peterborough County is high, too.)

In delivering on that support for being able to ‘age in place,’ Puffer says the top three programs Community Care offers in terms of size are transportation, supportive housing, and adult day programming.

Community Care’s transportation service provides thousands of rides each year to older adults and people with special needs. From medical appointments, community services, shopping and recreational activities, this is one of the best ways that people can remain independent and connected with the community, says Puffer.

“We have very reasonable rates,” he says, thanks to a high level of subsidy from the Province. In fact, about 80 per cent of Community Care’s funding is through the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), which is funded by the Province. Savings can then be passed on to clients.

Most people want to be in their homes as long as they possibly can, says Puffer, and Community Care’s services help keep this possible.

“Things don’t have to come to a halt when you get older.”

Community Care’s supportive housing program allows personal support workers (PSWs) to go into these homes to do laundry, cooking, or personal care.

For things not on the services list offered by a PSW – like shovelling snow – Puffer says there are “brokered helpers” who can be found to do these things.

“They can decide on a decent, affordable rate,” he says, and “we subsidize when we can,” depending on the income level of the senior.

Adult Day Programs through Community Care are another important area to allow seniors to remain in place for as long as possible. With five adult day programs that are supervised by staff and volunteers, Monday to Friday in Lindsay, there’s food, games and entertainment.

“We emphasize the support this offers for the caregiver,” Puffer tells The Lindsay Advocate. “It’s so important that they remain healthy and have the rest they need, or the time they need, to do what they need to do.”

Community Care has an incredible number of volunteers – about 600 – who are spread out across Kawartha Lakes. If it wasn’t for them, says Puffer, they wouldn’t be able to do what they do.

Puffer says Community Care offers an entire “basket of services,” and all of them “combine to support independence for seniors, people with special needs, and people of all ages.” From the well-known Meals on

Wheels program, to subsidized dental services, help at home, hospice and more, this particular Community Care has a high number of services they are able to provide, thanks to community connections.

“The continuum of care actually intersects and bisects all of our service areas. It’s the basics of why Community Care was founded – to help local people live independently,” Puffer says.

Graham Bashford is the owner of Castle Keep Retirement, a local business based in Lindsay and serving Kawartha Lakes. As the name implies, Castle Keep is a small business that is all about keeping seniors at home, too, and living independently, for as long as possible

From home care, companionship, cleaning, and maintenance, they offer a broad range of services.

Bashford says some common ways Castle Keep helps, beyond personal health care, is through public transportation.

“Shopping for items is very popular,” Bashford says.“We often purchase a pre-paid Visa so we don’t need to worry about pin numbers or cash,” he says. Sometimes seniors try and tip, but we don’t accept tips, he says.

“So, Community Care can take you to appointments which is economical, but we accompany to appointments, too. Kind of like a loved one being present so we can relay messages to adult children,” Bashford says.

The business owner says their cleaning services are also highly sought after.

“So many people in the community clean until they find full-time or part-time work and then leave the senior high and dry.”

As with Community Care’s experience above, respite so the primary caregiver can get a few hours off is also sought after.

“All too often a senior with advanced Alzheimer’s disease is physically fit, has good blood pressure, and can shower themselves. But they can’t remember if they had breakfast so they’re very dependent on a loved one,” says Bashford.

Castle Keep has done their best to help out in some unique ways, too.

“We have dressed up and went to weddings as a guest to ensure a grandmother can get there. I have personally also done family reunions and have been a ‘helper’ -- so that is unique as no one wants to toilet their loved one at their wedding or their daughter’s wedding,” says Bashford.

Bashford says Castle Keep staff have gone “swimming at both the local swimming pool, but also support clients who move to the cottage for the summer and swim in the lake.”

“Tracey our operations manager, used to let a client enjoy a cigar in the tub once a week as that’s just what he wanted to do,” says Bashford. “We take clients to look at Christmas lights or see the autumn leaves, and have even brought clients to our Christmas parties. A veteran in Fenelon Falls keeps us busy indoor golfing in his basement during the winter.”

Bashford also run a ‘men’s group’ at Extendicare every Thursday to talk about politics, sports, the history of Lindsay, and hobbies – he finds it’s the perfect opportunity to make connections.

As for Mike Puffer at Community Care, he echoes the belief that in this business of caring, great connections end up being made.

“The relationships and friendships that end up being formed between clients and volunteers or staff can last a long time,”

New summer lunch program to feed hungry children JOLI SCHEIDLER-BENNS

The Food Security Working Group, a committee of the Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition, will be running a pilot project in the Lindsay area centred on feeding children in the summer. The Salvation Army and the Kawartha Lakes Food Source, as part of the committee, are partnering on this project.

“This is a new and different way for us to reach out to the community,” says Heather Kirby, general manager of Kawartha Lakes Food Source, “and we are very excited to learn from this pilot.”

The Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition recognizes the gap in available food during the summer months for children who benefit from in-school meal programs. According to recent Canadian Census data, there are at least 384 children in these target areas that are below the low income measure (LIM).

The catchment areas for 2018 schools will consist of: King Albert, Queen Victoria, and St. Mary Catholic. Kirby says that they “are working with these school principals to get the word out to their students” before the summer break.

The Food Security Working Group’s goal is to make a lunch consisting of a sandwich or wrap, a fruit, vegetables, yogurt or cheese, and baked treat. Kirby says that although they are targeting these elementary schools for distribution, “no questions will be asked and any child that wants a lunch can get a lunch.”

The number of children that will access the program are expected to be between 100 and 125 each day.The program will run on Wednesdays and Fridays each week from July 4 until Aug 31 for a total of nine weeks. About 1,800–2,250 lunches will be made over the course of the summer. Kirby acknowledges that this does not cover the full need in the community of feeding hungry children, but states that “without knowing the uptake of the pilot and with the financial constraints involved,” it is hard to gauge the demand. “We are here to learn,” says Kirby as this type of program hasn’t been done here before.

The Food Security Working Group is looking for support from churches, businesses, and individuals in the community to fund and assist with the program.

United Way has offered initial financial support to get the pilot started. Kirby says that new volunteers are welcome and those with food handling and cooking experience would be “very helpful.”

She adds that those who wish to distribute the food to the children would need to get a vulnerable sector screening with their background check.

Support can be made through a donation of cash, grocery store gift cards, or food items (as listed below). A taxable receipt will be issued for any financial donation over $10. Donations can be dropped off at Kawartha Lakes

Food Source on 41 George Street West or The Salvation Army at 30 Peel Street in Lindsay. All donations of food should be dropped off on Monday or Tuesday before 4 pm to give volunteers enough time to prepare the lunches. Donations of fresh food is always welcome as well and tax receipts will be issued for over $20, according to market value.

Kawartha Lakes makes splash in craft brewery scene

For a craft beer enthusiast within the Toronto area, names like Steam Whistle, Mill Street, and Black Oak resonate. They – like several others – are all breweries recognized for their great tours in the GTA.

But given their geographic location, none of them can hold a candle to the natural charm and get-away feel of Kawartha Lakes – and at least one craft beer entrepreneur here thinks that’s going to help make this area make a splash in the craft brewery scene.

Aaron Young, proprietor of the soon-to-be-open Pie Eyed Monk in Lindsay, along with his partner, Jennifer Boksman, says Kawartha Lakes is going from zero to four craft breweries operating in Kawartha Lakes by the end of 2018. He believes that should make some waves in the GTA among folks who search these experiences out. (In addition to Young and Boksman, there are four other local business partners involved in the brewery.)

“Loads of communities across North America have built breweries,” Young tells The Lindsay Advocate, “but they don’t have what we have.”

That would be 250 lakes, the Trent Severn Waterway, four provincial parks, amazing rural bike trails, canoeing, boating, wildlife, and more. Then there are centres like Lindsay, Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, and the many other smaller communities that make up the City

New 2016 statistics just released from the City of Kawartha Lakes by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport show that tourism is one of the top economic drivers here. For domestic visitors only (not including overseas and US visitors) the data shows that over 1.6 million Canadian residents visit Kawartha Lakes every year and spend over $106 million in the municipality. A full 60 per cent of those visitors stay overnight and spend, on average, 2.4 nights in Kawartha Lakes.

Young is “gunning for a July 1 opening” in time for Canada Day, with multiple brews in the works, and he sees an amazing opportunity for the whole area.

“We not only can market our proximity to Toronto, we have the opportunity to market from the waterway, too,” he says, referencing the Trent Severn and the busy locks system that brings thousands of boaters here each summer.

Pied Eyed Monk will be more than a brewery.

It’s also going to be a restaurant, with a wood fire pizza oven, an open-concept kitchen, and a 14-person bar rail.

It will also have a wrap-around patio, private dining room, a 150-person event space upstairs, and it will feature live entertainment.

Built in a circa-1868 building in downtown Lindsay, the brewery, Young hopes, will also be of help to Lindsay’s downtown.

“Lindsay already has a healthy downtown – but we’re hoping we can give it a boost even more,” he says.

Given all the development happening in Lindsay on the west end, near the largest mall in town, he hopes it will give just one more reason to be downtown.

“People might grab a room at the Days Inn for a weekend, come downtown and see us for a meal and then maybe the next day they’re visiting another restaurant in town, doing some shopping, or catching a show at the Academy. That’s our vision,” he says, where everyone benefits.

Twenty-five minutes north of Lindsay, Bobcaygeon is the scene of two craft brewers.

Scott Nichol is the owner and general manager of Old Dog Brewing Company Inc. in Bobcaygeon. He created the brewery in late 2016 and purchased its current location the following May.

“I moved here in July and have been working on getting the brand out and building the brewery since,” he says.

Nichol says his original intention was to serve the

first Old Dog beer over the bar in its taproom at 30 King St. E., “but getting the appropriate zoning and site plan in place has taken much longer than I anticipated, so I had to pivot.”

Nichol decided to contract brew until he is able to open at the location he wants. Earlier this year he launched Old Dog’s flagship beer, Mad Dog American Pale Ale.

“We’ve recently launched our second beer, Dog Days Summer Ale and have received some amazing feedback and support on both.”

The owner says that since moving to Bobcaygeon he has been able to meet many of the business owners and citizens over the past year.

“I even joined the Bobcaygeon Curling Club to keep me busy and active in the winter, and met some really amazing people there. Everyone here has been incredibly supportive.”

He also participated in the Impact 32 auction last year to help build more docks in Bobcaygeon, and provided some sponsorship to local groups. Old Dog will also be participating the Bobcaygeon Craft Beer and Food Festival in August.

and eat it here while enjoying one of our brews.”

Nichol, like Young, says he is surprised that “until this year, no craft breweries had a physical location in the City of Kawartha Lakes.”

“Craft breweries are a destination and having four located within a short drive from each other will be amazing, not only for all of us, but for each of our communities,” says Nichol. “People may come with the intention of visiting the brewery, but while they are here, they will also eat, shop, and possibly stay. It’s going to be great for everyone.”

Bobcaygeon Brewing’s Richard Wood says his business has been around for just over three years. He says a lot of success has been achieved during this time, including an increased interest in their beers. Craft beer tourism is “a great opportunity.”

“Food and drink is one of the major drivers for millennials when they are deciding where to go on vacation, so we’re excited to work with other breweries in the local area to market the area in other regions such as Toronto and Ottawa.”

Wood says they are active in the local community, sponsoring events such as the Bobcaygeon Craft Beer Fest and the Canada USA Walleye tournament.

“We’ve also worked with Kawartha Settlers’ Village and Buckhorn Community Centre (outside of Kawartha Lakes), and sponsored the Mash Bash in support of the clinic in Bobcaygeon.

Settlers’ Village is a major tourism destination point not only for Bobcaygeon but for Kawartha Lakes.

Robyn Barton, marketing coordinator of the historic Village, says the popularity of craft beer, plus the ambience of a unique setting that is Kawartha Settlers’ Village, is a major draw.

“We are bringing a newer, modern trend into a place of heritage. It combines the two in a really fantastic way,” she says.

Attendees can not only enjoy craft beers and ciders, but “amazing food vendors, musical entertainment and the ability to stroll the Village and see its artifacts and heritage buildings.”

Barton says there are also local artisans on hand showcasing their wares. “All and all the focus is on the beer, but there is so much to do and see at the event.”

Barton says increasing tourism benefits everyone.

“We are proud to be a destination for festivals and events that bring together local vendors so that we can

can all benefit from the exposure and amount of out-oftowners they draw in.”

Just 14 minutes west of Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls is poised to see its first craft brewery open this fall. In mid-June, Fenelon Falls Brewing celebrated the release Vinh and Agatha Mac

of its flagship beers, Vienna Lager, and Red Ale, for the community.

“We’re opening the brewery as a way to say thanks to the community of Fenelon Falls,” says co-owner Vinh Mac. He owns the business, along with his partner, Agatha Mac.

“They welcomed my family when we immigrated to Canada in the 1970s without knowing a soul, or a word of English. We now want to give back to thank the Fenelon Falls community for their generous hospitality.”

The building that houses their brew house is from the 1800s and remains one of the most recognized buildings in the Kawarthas, says Mac.

“We want to transform it into a place for the community to gather, to sit a while, and to have a stressfree, amazing experience.”

The business will grow, he says, to include a taproom, an event space, and a street-side patio.

“The intention throughout is to shine a light on the people, the heritage, and the life of the region through local music, art, and cultural events.”

“From the very beginning, we set out to create a destination brewery to invite visitors to experience the beautiful village of Fenelon Falls,” says Mac. He calls it an opportunity for all businesses in the area to benefit by collaboratively working together to highlight the unique features of the area in all seasons.

“It’s going to be up to the four breweries to come together, to give people another great reason to visit City of Kawartha Lakes,” Young says.

LINDSAY’S CRAZY JIM

FRIENDS & NEIGHBOURS WITH JAMIE MORRIS

My wife, Glenda, has run marathons. It’s a terrible spectator sport: at the starter’s pistol she would set her pace and return three hours later. The distance she was running was the distance from Lindsay to downtown Peterborough.

Frankly, I thought she was crazy. So when Glenda talks with awe about another runner and calls him crazy, I take notice.

That’s how she talks about Jim Martin, widelyknown in the local running community as “Crazy Jim,” a long-time Lindsay resident and former ultramarathoner.

When I first talked to Jim, 11 years ago, Jim had twice run all 11 ultramarathons in the annual Ontario Ultramarathon Series; another year he’d run all but one.

Jim’s other pursuit is judo, and he’s achieved -- and continues to achieve -- at the highest level in that martial art. But let’s talk about his ultramarathoning history before we get to that.

An ultramarathon is not something you or I are likely to do. Jim’s ultras were 100 miles -- roughly the distance from Lindsay to, say, Burlington. It took him 29 to 30 hours to complete a run, with brief pauses for pit stops or to chow down crushed-up potato chips, soda crackers, a bagel or gummi bears. Routinely, runners vomit, or complete the race with black toes, or hands so swollen from water retention that they can’t make fists. Occasionally they succumb to heat exhaustion or hypothermia. One time, Jim tells me, he came across a runner standing still, literally asleep on his feet.

All you need to know about ultramarathons is that the last race in the series is called “Vulture Bait.”

For Jim, who’s now 68, the running began when he quit smoking. He was 34 and his first runs were to the mailbox and back, a couple of hundred yards. Gradually he increased the distances, motivated by curiosity to see how far he could go.

His racing started with a five km, then 10 km races, and he continues to complete some of these—he’s

now run 26 Lindsay Milk Runs. By his late 30s, though, he was running marathons. He still wasn’t satisfied. Then he discovered ultramarathons.

Apart from testing his own limits, part of the satisfaction for Jim came from the camaraderie. “It’s like old-home week,” says Jim. Some of the best times are gathering around a campfire the night before. In ultras, “just trying to finish” is the goal rather than beating other runners.

The camaraderie extended to the race itself.

Apparently many of the older runners liked to run alongside Jim on these ultras, “maybe because I’m a qualified CPR instructor,” says Jim. (He’s not joking.)

Jim has lots of war stories to share.There’s the time he met up with a bear while completing the Haliburton Forest Ultra, and the time he completed the last 20 km with a hairline fracture of his shin. Then there’s the time he was running in a pack with two others in Milton. “It was raining so hard you’d be almost hanging onto the shirt of the person ahead,” says Jim. Then the hail started

and they tore off branches to shield themselves.

Altogether Jim completed 64 ultramarathons (hypothermia in a Haliburton 100 miler and heat exhaustion in a Niagara 100 km stopped him in two others).

Although he continues to run a 12.4 km loop 6 or 7 times a week -- and follows this up with cycling on a rather rickety bike out to Reaboro and back -Jim’s ultramarathoning ended eight years ago at Orleans, near Ottawa. If you can imagine, it was a 24 hour race run round and round on a short indoor track. After completing 80 kilometres his hips hurt so badly he decided to pack it in.

Although he’s slow to bring it up, Jim earned a number of honours in his ultramarathon running career.

He has participated five times in the Master’s National Championships in Ottawa, winning a gold, three silver and a bronze. He has also competed in two World Masters competitions.

Does Jim have tips for those who for some bizarre reason want to run ultras? “Listen to your body” is one.Another is “Don’t run with broken toes or teeth.”

Which is probably not necessary advice for anyone but Jim himself, and which brings us to Jim’s judo.

Jim is a 5th degree Judoka, and over his martial arts career has sustained innumerable toe, finger, wrist, and shoulder injuries.

Three times he has represented Canada in Judo kata competition. In 2015 he participated in World Championships in Amsterdam and in 2016 in Malta (placing 11th and 18th respectively). His highpoint was the Pan Am games in Havana, where he earned a bronze medal for Canada in open competition. Jim -- then 66 -- was the oldest in the field; the youngest was 18.

Quite an achievement, but what Jim took greatest pleasure in was recognition of his team’s good sportsmanship. “When we were in Havana,” he tells me, “we congratulated opponents as they came off.

Afterwards the Brazilians and the Argentinians came over and thanked us for the camaraderie.”

More and more he’s been refereeing at competitions. He’s also been an NTO (National Technical Official) for the visually and hearing-impaired judo team at the Pan Am Games. (His comment: “I had to make sure their uniforms met the international protocols.)

Let’s change tack at this point. At the outset I talked of the loneliness of the long-distance spectator

(me, watching my wife’s races). What of Jim’s significant other, Dianne, to whom he’s been married for 43 years?

Dianne, a retired nurse, recognizes the pleasure Jim gets from both the running and the judo. She has an open invitation to join him, and has often taken him up on it.

At the ultramarathons she had opportunities to meet other athlete relatives and supporters. And a trip to Malta? Nothing wrong with that.

Not quite so exotic, but the day after we talked, Jim was setting off to Buffalo. There’s a refereeing clinic for Jim, followed by officiating at a competition on the weekend. Dianne? Taking a pass on this one.

‘Friends & Neighbours:’ The Inspiring Story of Stanley Dayton

I am indebted to fellow Advocate writer, Jamie Morris, for allowing me to borrow the title of his column for this month’s installment of ‘Just In Time.’ As regular readers of the Advocate will know, “Friends & Neighbours” introduces the community to familiar individuals among us who have fascinating stories to share about their life, their culture, or their vocation.

Our past is full of interesting citizens who would have been regarded as friends and neighbours by their contemporaries. Whether it was the keeper of the local general store, the milkman, or the arena manager, small communities across Ontario could once claim a cast of characters who made an indelible impression on a generation of local citizens.

One such example is Stanley Dayton. Anyone between the ages of 40 and 100 who grew up in, lived in, or worked in the Little Britain area will no doubt have a recollection or two about this memorable gentleman. They recall him shuffling along the shoulder of what is now called Eldon Road, often with the latest edition of the Lindsay Daily Post in hand. Sporting a long dark coat, a newsboy cap, and a pair of rubber boots, he stopped at homes in and around Little Britain to ask the same question of farmers and villagers alike: “Would you like to buy the paper?” Such was the job of a subscription agent for the Post, a role Stanley Dayton faithfully fulfilled well into his sunset years.

But who was Stanley Dayton? Of all the historical personages from our past, why have I chosen to focus on this particular character, and why is it important for us to respect the memory of those “friends and neighbours” who still haunt our collective consciousness, decades after their

Stanley Roy Dayton was born on November 17, 1895, to Mr. And Mrs. Charles J. Dayton, of Mariposa Township. At the time of Stanley’s birth, Queen Victoria was on the throne, Prime Minister Mackenzie Bowell was serving Canada, and Premier Oliver Mowat was in power in Ontario. Electricity and telecommunications were novelties; local, national, and international headlines made their way into communities like Little Britain through newspapers like the Post.

The Dayton clan lived north of Little Britain, in a farmhouse at the northeast corner of Concession Road 6 and today’s Eldon Road. Stanley was the younger of two children; his older sister, Delia Maude Dayton was born in 1887. Oral tradition suggests that Maude regarded Stanley with the kind of patronizing air that older siblings are often wont to bestow on their younger kin.

Maude must have had something of an adventuresome spirit in her, for she would go on to train as a nurse at the Clifton Springs Sanitarium Hospital in upper New York State, and ultimately served as a Nursing Sister in France during the First World War – an experience which afforded her the opportunity to see more of the world.

Stanley, too, had a brief stint in the army, having enlisted in the spring of 1918 with the First Depot Battalion of the Eastern Ontario Regiment, Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. Sadly, his time in the military was marred by ill health, both mentally and physically. Service records indicate that he was in constant fear of “people who mean to harm him,” corroborating stories which

suggest that Stanley was bullied as a child. Even as a senior, Stanley Dayton was frequently the victim of practical jokes committed by local youths, often at Hallowe’en.

Standing out amid those who saw him as an eccentric, the “town fool,” and a gullible recipient of pranks, were people who regarded Stanley Dayton as an intelligent gentleman whose vast knowledge of Mariposa Township, its people and history, was something to be treasured and respected.

Ruth Coppin was one such individual. She got to know Stanley in the late 1970s, after moving to the area.

“He became a truly good friend, and we considered him a part of our family,” says Ruth today.

After Stanley gave up driving, he relied on friends and neighbours like Ruth to drive him into Lindsay for errands. He was well-known throughout the area for his frugality, something Ruth remembers well. “He was a very careful shopper,” she reminisces. “He would have bought a pie or some sweet treat, but he never paid full price for it. He would find what he wanted, then shuffle up to (the grocer) and ask ‘Is this the best you can do?’ and they would mark the price down for him. He would tell me what he got, and then he would say, ‘And I got it for my price!’”

Stanley Dayton died on July 31, 1990, aged 94.

Nearly 30 years after his death, elements of his story continue to inspire us.

He inspires contentedness. The accompanying picture of Stanley Dayton beside his beloved Model “T” Ford was taken in the summer of 1967, at a time when the world was undergoing enormous cultural, social, and technological change. This image captures someone who was clearly undaunted by the latest trends and fashions, being content with what had served him well for so long.

He inspires renewed appreciation for everyday history. Our past includes much more than the dramatic and often controversial meta-narratives found in “official” histories. It also includes people like Stanley Dayton, who through his work as the Little Britain correspondent for the Lindsay Daily Post saw the 20th Century play out in the everyday lives of his friends and neighbours: births, weddings, deaths, and annual events enjoyed by a tight-knit community. As Ruth Coppin recalls, “He was always ready to go to any strawberry social, or the steam shows, and he always enjoyed the Lindsay Fair.”

He inspires us to respect seniors and listen to

to their stories. As the author of the Book of Job put it, “Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?”

This was indeed the case for those who saw in the person of Stanley Dayton living history.

When Sarah Williams had her first daughter at age 15, she found herself at Rosalie Hall in Toronto, a Catholic high school specifically for pregnant or postpartum young women. It was a phenomenal experience, she says, where she went on to learn crucial life skills.

Fast forward to today in Lindsay, where Sarah is one of three sisters who operate Ballroom Beauty Recycled Formal Wear. Sarah works with her siblings, Bekki Willis and Nicole Carruthers; they are joined by their mother, Carol Williams, and volunteer/board member, Katherine Stevens.

The whole reason for the business – which is set up as a non-profit – is to financially funnel profits into a future housing complex and school for young mothers in Lindsay. The idea, says Sarah, is to give back to the community so that local teen mothers might get the support they need, just as she did long ago.

“So many girls are trapped, in part, because of the cycle of poverty,” says Sarah. Through education and support, the women hope to help break the cycle of teen pregnancy here.

The five year plan is to open the housing complex first, then begin adding the education component as they go along. As their business grows, more and more of the money will go into kick-starting the housing unit.

In the meantime, Ballroom Beauty Recycled Formal Wear gives away dresses to those who can’t afford them (and accepts formal wear for donations.) They also sell gently used wedding, prom and formal wear. The women are looking for business and community partners to make their dream for the community a reality.
