EDITOR’S LETTER Holla, kawanWH! There is always a silver lining in every cloud, but do so rain in a shiny park. Someone that is already gone, someone that is no longer there with us anymore surely deserve a special place for whatever it is that they already done. Their kindness, their wholeheartedness, their desire to be there whenever we needed them is an irreplaceable persona from our daily life. That is why Warta Himahi brings up this topic titled Gone to describe to kawanWH how it feels like losing that special someone and how do we cope with that loss. Sad, empty, grief, and tears might occur, but sometimes, happiness, smile could also be one of the indicator showing that particular one is ‘gone for good’ and we can take silver lining behind it. This particular topic finally brings us to the closure of all working programs of Warta Himahi for the period of 2016-2017. Whenever there is a meet, farewell soon follows. This special edition is produced as our deep condolences toward Mbak Diandra Dewi, our beloved lecturer, who passed away too soon for all the good she gave upon our life. Her passion, her tenacity, her willingness to teach will always be in our remembrance. The Fushimi Inari-taisha, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Japan is one of the most visited landmarks in Japan. Its Torii Path is what makes it special and beautiful where there are orange pillars that are put close to each other and form a path from one end to another. The Fushimi Inari-taisha is considered to be a holy or sacred place because it is filled with shrines where people worship their God or in this case, Inari, the God of Rice.

NORWAY IS
THE WORLD’S HAPPIEST COUNTRY FOR 2017 6 / WH

O
n a recent World Happiness Report released by the United Nations on Monday (20/3), Norway has been named as the world’s happiest country for 2017. The Scandinavian nation ranked first this year, after ranked fourth on last year’s World Happiness Report. Norway was followed by Denmark that ranked second on the report, after named as last year’s world happiest country. Iceland, Switzerland, and Finland were ranked third, fourth, and fifth respectively. On the contrary, Rwanda, Syria, Tanzania, Burundi, and Central African Republic was ranked as the bottom five countries on the list. All 155 countries were being measured on the making of this report. Some factors that were being measured in this report are including levels of caring, the freedom to make life decisions, generosity, good governance, honesty, health, and income. Other factor that also being measured are employment, income inequality, life expectancy, GDP per capita, social support, and lack of corruption in government and business. The report also noted that happiness was falling in the United States, as there was drop in some factors such as social support, a sense of reduced personal freedom, lower donation, and increased corruption. Those factors made the United States slid from being the 13th place to the 14th place. Other than that,
the report also mentioned that China’s happiness has decreased, despite the constant growth of the country’s income. Slow development in Africa also has caused the low level of happiness for the African, although the people continues to express optimism for their future. Other notable findings in the report were that a high number of unemployment and the quality of the work and its environment still play as the major factor in people’s happiness. In addition, a higher pay will make the workers feel happier just as much as the balance in work-life, health, and safety does. Furthermore, in all countries, happiness would be achieved by eliminating depression and anxiety disorder than by reducing poverty, low education, and unemployment. Moreover, in Western countries that are wealthier, mental health was considered as more important factors in people’s happiness, more than income was. The director of Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Jeffrey Sachs, said that the most important thing is to create policies for the well-being of the people. He said, “As demonstrated by many countries, this report gives evidence that happiness is a result of creating strong social foundations.” Sachs also added, “It’s time to build social trust and healthy lives, not guns or walls. Let’s hold our leaders to this fact.” (LJ)

ACEH TSUNAMI MUSEUM KEEPING THE HOPES ALIVE

E
very single year since the Indian ocean earthquake and tsunami occurred in Aceh in 2004, many people from all over the world would commemorate December 26th as the date of one of the most disastrous and catastrophic events ever in the world. Nearly 250.000 people were killed during the natural disaster, and many of its survivors still grief about it. To continue living was nowhere near easy, as they had lost their family members and friends. The whole city was a mess, bodies were found all over the place, and it took almost three weeks to evacuate the dead bodies. Right after the tsunami happened, many people were voluntarily coming to Aceh to help with the evacuation and rescuing the lucky ones who survived. They’d done all of the steps in evacuating, including collecting the personal data and family backgrounds and burying the bodies in a mass grave. On the other side, trauma healings are done by both psychologists and volunteers, and the huge amount of aids which was outpouring is said to be the largest in history. Five years later, a massive building located at the heart of Aceh was built as a symbolic monument. The Aceh Tsunami Museum. This four-story monument was designed by M. Ridwan Kamil, an architect who became the mayor of Bandung. This building was built mainly to commemorate the tsunami tragedy, but it also functions as an evacuation center, in which people can run up to the top of the building in case of another tsunami. This museum once became a controversial topic, as it had overshadowed hundreds of homeless families in Aceh. There were arguments of how the government’s priority had gone wrong, yet it dwindled and the
museum was given its chance to become a beacon at the province’s capital, Banda Aceh. With zero admission fee required, visitors of Aceh Tsunami Museum will have approximately an-hour tour into four different chambers inside the building. As a very philosophically-built establishment, this building will give the visitors a quite trembling feelings at first. Into the museum, the first chamber encountered will be the Chamber of Fear. It is a dark and narrow corridor with humidity and water flowing on the sides. As it goes along, an audio of terrifying water rushing and voices of devastation will accompany. That is why, for visitors with trauma, phobias and other psychological issues related to this chamber’s features are suggested to take the stairs instead. Following the first chamber, the second one was designed to picture the massive agony. Around 40 monitors are displayed in analogous tombstones. In these monitors, photos are shown to recall the memories of the tragedy. The lights are dim, and reflective mirrors are installed to depict the bed of the ocean. And from time to time, visitors will encounter earthquake simulations as well as dioramas and relics. The third and fourth chamber is shaped like a chimney of 30 meters high. Around the cylindrical structure, nearly 2.000 names of those who deceased during the tragedy are displayed. And by the end of the chimney, God’s name is engraved in Arabic with yellow lighting. Just another illustration that one shall never lose hope, and about human’s connection with The Creator, that those who lives will always return to Him. And finally, the visitors will be taken to The Bridge, just a little over a small pond. Over the bridge, 54 flags are hung to credit 54 nations who had contributed in supporting Aceh and Indonesia after the tsunami.

US WARSHIPS DEPLOYED TO KOREAN PENINSULA
T
he United States’ Carrier Strike Group, The Carl Vinson Strike Group, is headed toward Western Pacific Ocean near the Korean Peninsula on Sunday (9/4). There were the Nimitzclass aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, two guided-missile destroyers, and a guided-missile cruiser in the strike group. The strike group was initially stopped in Australia, but Pacific Command’s Commander, Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr., diverted the route to sail north to the Western Pacific, where they held exercises with the South Korean Navy, that made North Korea provoked as they thought the joint military exercises was done as preparation for invasion. The President of United States of America, Donald Trump, said that the US has prepared an act alone to encounter the nuclear threat from North Korea. US Pacific Command spokesman, Dave Benham said, “The number one threat in the region continues to be North Korea, due to its reckless, irresponsible and destabilizing program of missile tests and pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability,” Several nuclear tests were conducted in North Korea. On April 5, North Korea projected a Scud extended-range

missile, ballistic missile technology, and in September, they successfully developed and tested a nuclear warhead which predicted could reach the United States. Pyongyang said that these nuclear weapons were made to defend themselves from the aggression of United States. There were 4 medium–range ballistic missiles fired towards the Sea of Japan; Nodong, Musudan, Taepodong 1, and Taepodong 2, which made Japan responded furiously. So, what is the purpose of all these moves? It was all started when China’s president, Xi Jinping, met and discussed how to reduce the tension that North Korea made related to the nuclear and missile programs, and how to restrain North Korea’s missile projects. China, however, was the type of state which are not going to cut the relation between the states out of fear of its collapsing and would spawn refugees. China also has been North Korea’s closest ally, but their relationship now has gap since Pyongyang refused to end nuclear and missile testing. Mr. Trump said in the recent interview on April 3, that Washington will still solve North Korea even if China will not do it. (BP)

It was held as a celebration for the athletes who have been participating in the series of sport game event, also to announce the winner of the game. The tagline for the event was “Only the chosen one deserve to celebrate and feasting with Them.” The theme for the celebration change every years, with name for a place chosen from year to year. Last year, the name of the celebration was One Night in Vegas. And for this year’s name, the committee has
The celebration consisted of awarding night for the athletes, food tenants with varied food, and performance from big artists such as Kahitna, GAC, and Aileen. Before the celebration, every major within Telkom University had participated in the sport represented by their chosen athletes. The Olympic also consisted of series of sport, such as basketball competition, futsal competition, badminton competition, PES competition, table tennis competition, billiard competition, chess competition, Dota 2 competition, and running competition held from February 7th until April 28th.

MOVIES AND BOOKS GONE GIRL VS. THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN The concern of both stories is circulating around marriage, where it was deeply concerned on women as a sole victim (not to mention about the effect, causing them to drift off somewhere) but there’s nothing fresh about that. “Dark side of suburbia” have been around for quite a long time. Though each movies are a subject to heavy comparison in certain aspects, apparently the differences are much greater. Gone Girl is filled with sharp prose and rich formula that is compelling enough, something The Girl on The Train lacks of. There’s a nightmare that resides comfortable beneath a sunny picket fence, and Gone Girl fits perfectly with the condition.
THE LOVELY BONES A story who embarks on a journey of a spirit called Susie Salmon, who got raped and murdered by his neighbor by the time she walked home. After made her way to “Heaven”, she then became an observer of her own life. Susie decided to make absorbed in a normal living just like her closest people, leaving an unsolved question for us to answer: has she truly disappeared? Things around her started to collapse and ruined one by one, but slowly forming into a stronger entity. Though some aspect seem to appear a bit bland, The Lovely Bones successfully serves as a loneliness completed in concrete form. COLORLESS TSUKURU TAZAKI AND HIS YEARS OF PILGRIMAGE by Haruki Murakami Back again with his specialty in making up nihilistic and aimless protagonists, Murakami begins a story with a 36 year old designer named Tsukuru. Tsukuru has to deal with the aftermath of being left by his 4 bestfriends which are also kind of the only friends he had, tsukuru got depressed, became friends with death and simply hit the lowest point of his life until he met a new friend and a new girl, slowly he pulls himself together again. The story unfolds into how tsukuru try to find out why his friends left him and eventually finds out why, sounds pretty simple but it’s quite intriguing. GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES I never called myself a fan of war drama that don’t emphasize in its historical side, nor even an anime; but Grave of the Fireflies just proved itself as a successful war-themed anime that runs a tear. Through a captivating animation, the movie tells a life of two young children, Setsuko and Seita who struggled to survive during WW2. Even Grave of the Fireflies barely dwells in war and destruction, instead it captures on a connection between Setsuko and Seita who take care of each other. Without any doubt, I would consider this movie as an absolute must-see to anyone who’s looking for a good sentimental punch.

I lost one of the most important person of my life, my only brother. He was only eighteen but he had to gone early. My days feel different now without him around. The idea that there would never be that playful grin anymore every morning in the house and the idea of not be able to see us grow together and raise our own family are two of the things that sadden me. But as time goes by, I understand that this was God’s plan and we just have to embrace it. After all, he may be gone from this world, but he is “there”.
Yes and it was really hard. Getting used to being without the one thing that you always count on, not being able to use it when you need it the most. It was like walking in the dark without any light to help you, but like every anchor you can always remake it and make it okay again. When I was around 25-26 I hit some kind of a quarter-life crisis where I found myself at an intersection, for a reason and another I doubt if I should continue my passion to keep being an educator or chose another career path. I was lost, I got nowhere to go and it was quite a difficult process to pull myself together again. It was until my daughter’s kindergarden teacher asked me about my passion, that’s when I got inspired and found myself again. I learned that when we’re in the middle of an identity crisis or when we’re losing hope, something as random as an event or a stranger could help us and give us some kind of enlightenment. Hope can come from anywhere, even from places we never thought of. In the end we never ‘lose’ anything, it’s either we ‘win’ or we ’learn’.
I lost my love few years ago. Losing her was not the worst part. The worse was she took out an option. An option that most people seek, an option to love. It’s not that I couldn’t feel love, it’s just an option I would never bother to choose. To love is to be vulnerable, and to be vulnerable means to compromise with chaos. Ever since, I always thought that love was just an irrationality. It is a dimension where logic remains at rest, where hopes emerge even without hard work. I also thought that love is only an illusion of choice, where your choice doesn’t really matter because the result will somehow be determined by something else. I hope that someday, someone will give me an option. Not an option to love, but an option to forget.

ANOTHER ISIS’ INFLUENCE IN EGYPT

A
pair of bombs exploded in Egypt, when a lot of Palm Sunday worshipers prayed together on Sunday (9/4). At least 100 people were hurt and dozens of people dead in the accidents, whom 36 of them were the worshippers at Nile Delta Town at Tanta, where the bomb was put under the chair in the main prayer hall of the church. The other one was a suicide bomb in Alexandria and killed 11 people. The head of Egypt’s Catholic Church, Pope Tawadros II, was there during the attack but he was not injured. ISIS claimed both of the attacks. In order to protect the citizens, The Egyptian Cabinet announced a threemonth state of emergency, to make sure that authorities can find the killers. “The state of emergency allows both the armed forces and the police to execute those procedures necessary to combat the threats of terrorism and its financing, maintain security around the country and protect public and private property, as well as preserving the lives of citizens,” the representative stated. The government need to make fast moves within seven days to three months to finish this problem. The people of Egypt condemned the government because the security provided by the government is very weak. “Security is very weak and they are falling short of their duty. How can someone plant an explosive inside the church? Why didn’t they search him?” said Amel Roushdi, a Christian and Egypt citizen. “Down with any president as long
as Egyptian blood is cheap,” and “Down with military rule!” the youths protests. It seems that many of the citizens are disappointed but have stated that they are still one Egypt even if there are Muslim and Christian. The reason why ISIS attacked the churches was not clear but most likely it is because Christians in Egypt are a soft spot. ISIS needs to widen its influence and the fastest way is by attacking these soft spots. “The Crusaders and their apostate followers must be aware that the bill between us and them is very large, and they will be paying it like a river of blood from their sons, if God is willing,” the radical group has stated. “Christian targets are easier–churches are far more difficult to fortify than say an army barracks or a police station. It is a disturbing development because it indicates we have the possibility of repeated and continued attacks against soft targets,” said H.A. Hellyer, senior nonresident fellow at the Atlantic Council and the Royal United Services Institute. The international community has expressed the condemnation against ISIS. Trump has shown America’s commitment to protect all Christian and all Egyptian. António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General showed his sympathy and also condemns the attacks through a spokesman. Israel Prime Minister also stated that “The world must unite and fight terrorism everywhere.” (VCI)

s a further form of encouragement for the citizen to take action into dealing with unwanted foreign spies, the Beijing government had offered reward for anyone that’s capable on unearthing any possibly espionage threat in the country. The Beijing City National Security Bureau is encouraging citizens by offering rewards of 10,000 to 500,000 yuan ($1,500 to $73,000) for information on spies and by discovering espionage equipment, such as recording and monitoring devices, could bring extra rewards on Monday (10/4). China had been actively promoting and wide spreading the danger of getting to know, or even becoming close with decent foreign people as it is possible for them to be spies. The officials released a comic strip titled “dangerous love” and it circulates all over the nation’s local government bulletin board in attempt to warn female government worker and other citizens in general, as a part of the first ever National Security Education Day, not to share any kind of internal governmental information or any form of information that might be used against the government. In this comic strip, despite its colorful nature, it is shown that anyone who aided the foreign spies in any way, or in the case of the comic is sharing the government information, will be sentenced to death. The urgency and needs for new measures to guard against foreign spies is an unfortunate side-effect of China’s reform and opening up to the world. The government has acquired and
conducted new means and policies to assure China’s safety. There are a lot of Western governments that spoke out their disagreement and critiques. Most of them had thought that this new measure could be threatening to China and had defined the nation’s interest a bit too broadly to be safe. China also risking itself that these measures would even create some sort of cracks in the government itself. Even so, the Chinese officials had claimed that they’ll be doing what they’ve agreed on and they see this new law as fitting. Propaganda or not, the Chinese really takes matter seriously when it comes to foreign spies. The Beijing officials (and the state in general) were not only releasing campaigns as such “dangerous love”, they also said that the public should help on constructing an iron Great Wall in combating evil and guarding against spies. The authorities had claimed that the heart of Chinese governance and innovation, Beijing, is the best place for spies to sneak in and others who are trying to carry out infiltration, subversion, theft, and destruction. No one doubts that China, like all major world powers, is a target for espionage. But however real that threat, raising the specter of hostile foreign forces to rally domestic support can be a useful tool and it would not be the first time that the Chinese authorities have reached for it. .S. government started to apply “extreme vetting” for Taiwanese travelers as a practice toward visitors from friendly countries. In May 5, 2017, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that foreign nationals planning to visit the U.S. could be forced to “reveal mobile contacts, social media password, and financial data” and answer questions about their ideology. The report said, citing an unnamed senior official, that planned measures could even be applied to visitors from the 38 countries that participate in the U.S. visa waiver program, including Taiwan. This program was administrated by the Department of Homeland Security in consultation with the State Department. This program would permit citizens of 38 countries to travel to United States for business or tourism for staying up to 90 days without a visa and, in return, those 38 countries must permit U.S. citizens and nationals to travel to their countries for a similar length of time without a visa for business or tourism purposes. The 38 countries in U.S. visa waiver program are Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore,
Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and United Kingdom. All of them are generally those that meet U.S. standards on data sharing and passport control and whose citizens have traditionally had very low refusal rates in the United States. Furthermore, they must have authorization trough the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to boarding a U.S. bound air or sea carrier. “We are aware of the WSJ article. We will keep the public informed about changes affecting travelers to the United States,” said Sonia Urbom, the spokesperson for the American Institute in Taiwan, which represents American interests in Taiwan. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that they had not been able to confirm the report from WSJ and promised to release a statement as soon as it obtained any information on the matter. The measures were being objected by human rights and civil liberties groups. They already object the comment by Homeland Security Secretary, John Kelly, in which he suggested that U.S. would ask visitors for internet browsing information and passwords. Kelly told a Senate committee in February that passwords were asked for “so we can see what they do on the internet ... If they do not want to give us that information, then they cannot come.” (JDA)

THE UNSOLVED MYSTERY OF THE

ave you ever heard about the Zodiac Killer? In the late 1960s, people in America and also the world were shaken by the Zodiac Killer phenomenon. The Zodiac Killer was the most famous serial killer in the United States; he killed at least 5 people in the late 1960s until 1970s, though he claimed to have killed about 37 people. The Zodiac first murder occurred on December 20, 1968, in Vallejo, California. The victims were David Arthur Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen; they were killed while sitting in a parked car. Not long after that, on July 4, 1969, the killer killed two more people not far from the first murder location. Unfortunately, one of the victims, Darlene Ferrin, did not survive but Michael Mageau, the other victims was survived from the hideous event. Mageau was able to give the police a description of the killer. A few weeks after that, the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Examiner, and the Vallejo Times-Herald receives a letter from someone claiming to be the killer and called himself as “Zodiac”. Besides the letter, the killer also gave three different cryptograms codes that claimed would reveal his identity. In the letter, the Zodiac also drew a crosscircle symbol and it became famous because it represents his “signature”. On September 27, 1969, in Napa, California, a couple was stabbed while they were picnicking, one of the victims, Bryan Hartnell, told the police that he was stabbed by a man in a hood with the Zodiac symbol on his chest. Another victim is a taxi driver, Paul Stine, who was shot in the head by his passenger on October 11, 1969. Later, the Zodiac wrote in his letter “PS. 2 Cops pulled a goof about 3 min after I left the car”
making it likely that two cops drove by the serial killer without even knowing. There were a number of suspects that have been named; the first suspect was Earl Van Best Jr, there was a resemblance between him and the sketch portrait of the Zodiac, but he didn’t match the description. The second suspect was Arthur Leigh Allen, he became the suspect because he told his family he was going to Lake Berryessa which was where the Zodiac killed his other victims, and Allen came home with blood all over his body, a bloody knife was found in his car and he also wearing a watch with the same cross-circle symbol that the Zodiac use as his signature. In 1987 his inmate told the police that when he was in a jail, Allen confessed that he killed Paul Stine. But when police compared Allen’s DNA with the Zodiac’s stamp saliva, the result was negative. Even though the police have been working hard to solve all of these murders, unfortunately, the identity of the murderer is still unidentified. Until this day many speculations and theories are out there about the identity of the Zodiac, many people admitted that they are the real Zodiac Killer, but not one person matches the description of the Zodiac. The mystery became an international talking, and inspired many books and even adapted into a movie called Zodiac in 2007, but as entertaining as it is, only about 35% of the story was accurate from the actual event. Until this day, no one is really sure who is the man behind all of the brutality, the killer seems like magically gone under the radar, but many people believe that there is more than one Zodiac Killer and they are still out there breathing and alive and his mystery remains unsolved. We all have our own experiences with loss and those who are gone from our lives, this is how the world experience it’s loss over influential people.(AA) 1. THE DEATH OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. Martin Luther King, Jr. Is a civil rights leader, he was shot and killed at Tennessee on April 4th. Martin Luther King Jr. Was a social avtivist who led civil rights movements in the United States from the mid-1950s. After being involved in marches, going to jail, and living under threats Martin Luther King Jr. was killed by a sniper’s bullet. His death had quite an impact on race relations in the US, later on he became a known African American Leader of his era and have been honored with a national holiday, schools and building named after him, and a memorial. His speech and values have inspired movements that sparked even decades after his death as a visionary leader who was deeply committed to achieve social justice through nonviolent ways.
2. THE DEATH OF GANDHI Gandhi is an anti-war activist that leads India’s independence movement and influence the world with a form of non-violent civil disobedience. Gandhi organized boycotts against British institutions in peaceful ways. He grew up following Jainism, an ancient Indian religion that held the values of nonviolence, fasting, meditation and vegetarianism. His father encouraged him to be a government minister so in 1888 he sailed for London to study law. He became a leading figure of the Indian home-rule movement, he urged components of Indian society to stop giving benefits to the British and rather being self-reliant and independent. On January 30th 1948 Gandhi was assasinated by a Hindu extremist that hates his tollerance for Muslims, after his death Gandhi’s belief in simple living and independence have brought hope for oppressed and marginalized people all over the world, his actions have also inspired human rights movements that happens for decades.
3. THE DEATH OF CHE GUEVARA Che Guevara is known as an icon of revolution rebellion and even pop culture today. Strange combinations indeed, with his face all over guys
T-Shirts and posters on walls along with quotes about rebellion and revolution. Ernesto “Che” Guevara de la Serna is a doctor, he became active in politics after completing his medical studies at the University of Buenos Aires then he met Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro and his brither Raul in 1954 while he was in Mexico. He then became a military advisor to Castro and led guerrilla troops as an effort to overthrow the Batista Government in Cuba. He was in charge of La Cabaña Fortress prison and executed around 550 people. He also became minister of industry, left his post in 1965 and spread the ideas of Cuba’s Revolution. Che has become a legendary political figure after he got captured by the Bolivian army and killed in La Higuera on 9th October 1967. His interesting life is portrayed in several books and films such as The Motorcycle Diaries (2004).
4. THE DEATH OF MUNIR Munir Said Thalib was an Indonesian activist, he became the founder of KontraS, a non-governmental organization also known as The Commission for ‘the disappeared’ and victims of violence. He was found dead on an airplane allegedly poisoned on an airplane heading towards Amsterdam on 7th September 2004. His death then sparks controversy and anger of other Indonesian human rights Activists, a museum then built dedicated to him to tell his story, Munir was also known for his involvement and key knowledge in major human rights violation cases in Indonesia. He was a researcher and an activist especially investigating numerous human rights cases under Suharto regime. Allegedly the death of Munir was linked to numerous government officials. His death later sparks many other activism in Indonesian community specifically issues about human rights.
5. THE DEATH OF ANNE FRANK Anne Frank was a victim of the Holocaust who documented her life in a journal that she wrote. Anne Frank lived in Amsterdam during WWII, her family went on a run and hide from Nazi persecution of Jews. Anne was 15 when her family was found and sent to concentration camps where she died eventually. In her journal she wrote about her experience during the holocaust, her writings shows that she’s a creative, wise, have the emotional depth and rhetorical power far beyond her age. Anne Frank died when she was 15 because of health problems. The death of Anne Frank and the publication of her journal spread the story of the horrific holocaust.

ationality and humanity may not always be those two things people compare, nor the two terms that somehow own correlations. See, being rational is to lean our mind on logic and evidence, even if it is against our comfort. Say, to believe in superstition or have a belief. We are aware of the fact that most of people believe in things they don’t see just because that certain entity provides sense of sincerity or even answers to their problem. And it is totally fine to hold on to it. But how tolerable is that going to be? When we live our life, one of the advice from our mothers we always remember is that don’t burden others, especially for our own happiness and needs. Well, apparently in Africa, this goes all the way to the opposite side. It reaches a whole new level since people in Africa use their belief in black magic as an excuse to kill people. A strong relation to the terms rationality and humanity is built perfectly here. People start to lose their humanity because of the lack of rationality. To live as an albino in Africa is not a normal or easy thing to pull off. Until 2015, Under The Same Sun (UTSS) reported that there are at least 448 cases of attacks against albino in 25 countries all over Africa. These attacks consist of mutilation, violence, rape, and kidnapping. Ikponwosa Ero as an albino who works in the UN said there might be 10.000 albinos that will face total extinction. Their existence covered one out of 5.000 until 15.000 of births in Africa, and is saleable enough to be the main target for people to hunt. What about them? It’s about their body parts, actually – the way they are all so functional that people would kill to get them. In Africa, they believe that the body parts of albinos are able to bring luck,
wealth, and success in politic. For example, their bones are said to be contained by gold and some sort of magical power in them. The local belief even said that having sex with an albino can cure HIV/AIDS. However, it is not the only thing that got impacted. It has gone so far to the minds of albinos and parents whose children are albinos. They live in fear of unpredictable death. Kids who are albinos are also often to get discriminated in school or neighborhood. In fact, some children don’t go to school because their parents just can’t carry the thoughts of losing them. This becomes so frighteningly viral since in April 2016, four albino kids including a baby were murdered in Malawi, Africa. In Tanzania, Africa, they call kids with albinism ghosts. The albino kids will be hunted by shamans who categorized themselves as albino hunters. These albino hunters then will take the body parts of them to support the making of some traditional medicine and to perfect their magical needs, if that’s even a term. A shaman once cut a hand of a 6-year-old albino kid only to have it as a fetish. One thing that differentiates Tanzania from Malawi is that in Tanzania, people who hunt albinos are shamans. But in Malawi, people tend to kill albinos for money. KawanWH, a motive doesn’t entirely define itself. It is common for it to wander for replacements. It happens in Africa, it could be anywhere too – where people lost both of their rationality and humanity. At the end, these two things have a same component in them; logic. You can’t blame your superstition for the murder you commit. Therefore, people in Africa who hunt albinos, they “simply just missed”; inhuman and irrational. (EME)

eople were really shocked by the results of the second round Jakarta election: that almost everyone I know are the supporters of Ahok-Djarot, regardless the fact they are from Jakarta or not. Some even voluntarily participated in their campaigns, having their time and energy invested for a better Jakarta. Perhaps, it is because my university, particularly my major, is considered quite “liberal” in terms of our way of thinking, compared to other Indonesian in general. Many of my Muslim friends express their admiration for all the great works done by these two men, giving appreciation on the basis of their merits without citing any Quran verse that seems being used by people out there to justify their opposition towards Ahok in particular. Or, perhaps, it is simply because Ahok and Djarot re-define what it means to work for the people, and it is crystal clear that they are far from typical corrupt Indonesian elites. But the result of 19th of April election shows the other way: it is time for Ahok and Djarot to say goodbye to Jakarta, just like it is time for Batman to be gone (temporarily) from Gotham. Personally, besides this whole election thing, I also sense that changes are also coming into my life. Regardless the existence of any scientific proof, I somehow believe that this “syndrome” of overthink the upcoming young adult
years naturally occurs. Are we ready to plunge into the pool of adulthood? Having a job, financially independent, and expected by society to build family really soon. They say life will be boring in those years, and you cannot have the same joyfulness you find in your youth anymore. But I simply do not know what will come in the future, not even what tomorrow will bring. What I know is life will be different. Sooner or later, Jakarta will not be the same anymore, at least for me: perhaps it does not work as my home anymore, but a place where I crave for job, in the name of money. However, be that Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Pekanbaru, Pontianak, Manado, Jayapura or anything, as a part of our life, these times may be the point where the bond between us and our hometown will be felt differently. We may say that it is still a long time to arrive into that, but at the first place, I never imagine batch 2014 finally completed our mandatory Diplomacy in Practice. We are, simply, getting older. Just like Jakarta will never be the same without Ahok-Djarot, changes will also arrive into our life as we enter the adulthood. Just like those men master the art of letting go, so do we need to let go what is killing us for the better upcoming years. Embrace what is going to come in years ahead. Que sera sera.

I can never thank everyone enough for what they have contributed to this organization, and I will be forever grateful for that. Since the beginning of this administration, I knew that my days are numbered, and I planned to make them count. Departure, is something that is inevitable, it is always certain, but what is important, is not the fact that you will not be there anymore, but what you leave behind. What we will be leaving behind, is a foundation. This foundation, and whatever we have done within this term, serves as foundation for an even better HMPSIHI, and we will not even be there to see it. I do not want HMPSIHI to move two squares forward, only for it to go back by one square. I want this organization to hold its ground for today, to leap forward by ten squares without a setback tomorrow. Don’t look back, you are not going that way. For all of you, you will all be part of the next administration, and your biggest duty is to not let the next administration be stationary, or even worse, experience setbacks. Criticize, question, and make sure
that HMPSIHI does right by you. Our departure is inevitable, we have left a foundation, the goal is to build a house, do not create another foundation when we leave, when you are supposed to build the first floor. Build your own future, it is not handed to you. For all of us who leaves this organization for good, there are exciting and wild unknown experiences waiting for us in other places. For the past one to three years, we have experienced so much in this organization, but our numbered days have all been counted, it is now time to go. We may not have that much time left in here, so cherish it while you can, and do not let our departure holds you back from going forward. Thank you, HMPSIHI, you will be missed.

A LOVE LETTER FOR OUR

S
he was an educated girl, she was persistent, she was strong-willed, she knew what she was doing, she was our dearest Diandra Dewi. Some may have known her as a tiny person that learned warfare as if it was some kind of art – and, better believe it, for some people, it is art, including herself. Though her genuine smile – which we could never forget – represented a sweet girl at heart, she had always been a true fighter. In a world full of everyone else that tries to fit in and claims of being true with themselves, she was always ‘that girl’ that stood out amongst the crowd. Her ombré hair, her high-pitched voice, her one-of-a-kind sense of fashion – I mean, who could ever forget? The answer is most likely no one. The mind is a powerful thing, and so was hers. Many said that she was more than just smart, she was critical – in a good way, at the right time – a quality only a few possess, making her a role figure to certain people. The excitement to share what she knew was always visible, I bet
she would have been very delighted to share all of them, but then again, you could only learn so much. Rumors were flying like birds about her being a perfectionist when it comes to grading, and this always scared the life out of every single one of us. And just laying the fact here, it was true. But I say it was never a liability to expect a lot from people that you are proud of, even more so, the people that you think could do so much better. And now, some may find themselves missing those sleepless nights trying to figure out ways to win her applause because her opinions always mattered. Are you one of them? So, this one is for you. We are abundantly blessed that we had the chance to know you and see you at your very best. “One of the memorable moments I had with her took place in Diplomacy in Practice back in 2015. At that time, even though I was not in the logistic division, some of my friends and I did help them by lifting and moving some chairs for the meeting. At this point, Mbak Di gave me money to buy us some treats I guess. So then of course, I managed to give her back the change. Not long after that, my friend sent me a photo of that particular money I gave her. One thing that blew my mind was that it was on display, on the wall, in her office. I was not sure what that was about, I did not know why it was so important to her that it made its way to her office wall. But I guess, it was never about the money, it was actually the fact that she appreciated my action. I’ve heard a lot of people saying you should really prepare yourself if you are in one of her classes. But after all, it was worth it. And hey, Mbak, just a little side-note, I survived Prakdip! If I were given the chance to talk to you one last time, I would like to ask your thoughts about my draft, your office was just right next door to Mas Idil’s right? No one likes to lose because it will leave grief and wound for anyone who experienced it. Losing the nearest person, valuable things, health, time, opportunity, and even hope. No one wishes to lose something or someone in his/her life, even though loss is truly an inseparatable part in a human life. I, myself, have experienced many losses as well. I remember it well, when I was in the 1st grade, I lost my favorite earrings. At that time, a friend of mine was the one who stole those earrings. I also once lost a wallet that my aunt had just given me. I have only had it for three days. Not just stuffs, I have lost the people I care about. I once felt a huge loss after graduating from college because I did not know what to do and was scared by the fact that I might be unemployed. I, once, almost lost hope when my thesis draft was perpetually rejected by my graduate supervisor. It was then that I really wanted to give up and leave my study behind. I also almost missed the chance to be the part of this campus because of a communication error. I also lost one of the senior who happens to be a friend of mine on this campus. She just “transferred” half of her knowledge to me and suddenly she “went to a better place”.
But, when something is gone, something better is coming .. Losing something or someone is painful, but it should not be a barrier for us to move on. I have learned that loss would just make me a better person, a person who appreciated all that God gave me and never take anything for granted. After the loss of my earrings and wallet, I learned to be more careful with stuffs I have. When I thought I might lose hope, I learn to be a stronger person and not give up easily to achieve my dreams. When I knew that I had almost missed the opportunity to work on this campus, I realized that I should not waste what I have now, and give my best performance as I can. When I lost my loved ones, I learned to keep loving and caring people who remained around me, continuing the dreams and hopes of those who had gone first. Loss is painful, however, if we look from another point of view, loss could be a motivation for us to have a better life. Learn to continue to be grateful for all the things that are still in our lives until this day. Never waste time, hope, opportunity, including our relationship with the our closest people. So, yes, sometimes loss must be part of our life in order to get something better on its way to you. - JESSICA MARTHA

I
believe that everyone has ever experienced missing something or somebody. And sadness might be the most dominant emotion we feel. This condition might discourage our spirit and strength, distract our focus on our works, and even cause depression. Even though sadness can attract unpleasant situations to happen, it does not mean that we do not need it. If you ever watched Inside Out Movie, you can see that The Sadness character caused lots of troubles yet in the end it is the emotion that can make up Riley with her parents. Expressing our sadness might help us cure our feeling of loss. Recently, International Relations Department of Universitas Katolik Parahyangan has experienced a big loss. Our beloved colleagues and lecturers, Mas Arie dan Mbak Diandra, have left us. They might be gone yet they will always inspire us with their legacies. Mas Arie has conducted a research and his work has inspired me and other lecturers to launch
a book this month titled “Komunikasi Internasional dan Perubahan Sosial di Indonesia.” Mbak Diandra assisted the new Board of Directors to arrange the new diplomacy in practice model. She knew that it would not be easy and BoD would get many critics, yet she still supported us. We could feel her presence in the World Summit on Cyber Governance at Grand Tjokro. No need to be sad anymore, I believe that Mas Ari and Mba Diandra do not want to see us to get trapped sadness. They might be gone but their spirit will ever glow within us.

And with the end of this edition comes the end of our period, we will too be ‘gone’.
