Throughsuch structures, webeginto readspace notasstatic, butaslayers, shifting,and alive.
Theseearlyquestionsbecameentry pointsintoadeeperunderstanding oftheenvironmentswedesign, build,contest,andcallhome.
Observinghowcoastalcommunities adapttheirdwellingsrevealedhow underlyingsocialandpolitical forcesinfluencethemandtheir spatialingenuity.Environmental pressures,resourceconstraints, andinformalgovernancesystems arealletchedintothewalls, materials,andabsences.
Tolearnfromthesespacesisto recognizearchitectureasa conversationbetweenpeopleand place-provisional,responsive, andmostimportantly,constantly evolving.
Thisprocessofinquirymoves beyondconventionaldrawingand documentation.Itisaninvitationto engagewithdisciplinesthatmay seemdistantfromarchitecture, likeanthropology,environmental justice,oralhistories,andopens upnewwaysofseeing,drawing, andimaginingspace.

Establishedover50yearsago,the communityorganicallyonapost-quarry landscape.Thishistoryofresilienceand self-organisationwasdisruptedin2021ananti-encroachmentorderledtoa large-scaledemolitionofhomes.The supremecourthadcharacterisedtheir inhabitationasan“environmental violation”,raisingdifficultquestionslike: Whohastherighttoland?What constitutesaliveableenvironment?And howshouldrehabilitationbeapproached inthewakeofforcedevictions?
