This month’s issue of The Beacon takes us on a journey of innovation, technology and education. As we celebrate the University’s ninth Commencement ceremony from December 2018, we recognize the efforts of a large community of people who have made the University a success since its beginnings.

One of these people is His Excellency Ali Ibrahim Al-Naimi, former chairman of the KAUST Board of Trustees and former Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, who received the first honorary doctoral degree from the University during Commencement.

Our journey continues to KAUST partnerships with Saudi Aramco and McLaren Racing, through which new innovations in supercomputing and extreme performance

technology are taking shape. We also look into new University startups like iyris, which creates technologies that turn windows into solar panels, and we find out how KAUST researchers teach machines to learn.

Partnerships with the younger members of our communities are also important.

Through KAUST initiatives like the Young Learners’ Development Program, children from local communities experience the University’s unique educational environment.

The KAUST School also gives its pupils chances to work with University research centers like the Red Sea Research Center.

At the start of a new year, creating new opportunities for learning and future innovation continues to be key to our mission.

HARBOR ARTS & MUSIC FEST

WATER POLO TOURNAMENT The University’s first water polo tournament took place in November 2018, with the KAUST team “ORCA” playing against Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli and Jeddah Stars teams—and the KAUST team won! The event also included kids’ games, food trucks and a shopping bazaar.

Community members enjoyed the cooler weather at the Harbor Arts & Music Fest in November 2018, which featured an Artisan Fair; bands; a Quilt Exhibit hosted by the KAUST Stitching Club; food trucks; and prizes.

IT OPEN HOUSE The University’s Information Technology Department held its 5th IT Open House in December 2018. There, the KAUST community learned about the inner workings of IT and enjoyed food, entertainment, games and other activities. Companies like Crestron, FalconViz, DELL EMC, Microsoft, Zenith Arabia and BenQ also had booths at the event.

‘MUSICAL CELEBRATIONS’ CONCERT

DEBUSSY TRIO PERFORMANCE The KAUST community heard beautiful music during a lunchtime performance by the Debussy Trio from Germany. The ensemble continued the 41-year-long tradition of the Abegg Trio that has graced international concert halls in over 1,200 concerts since 1976. KAUST musician Wendy Keyes joined the group in once piece from the concert program.

The University’s Office of the Arts produced the “Musical Celebrations” concert featuring musicians from the KAUST community in December 2018. Special features included the Gardens Elementary School Choir co-directed by Peter Diglin and Shani Laulua and an original work for small orchestra by graduate student Andris Erglis.

WINTER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

THE NINTH KAUST COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY The entire KAUST community was invited to attend the ninth KAUST Commencement ceremony on Discovery Walk. Commencement 2018 speakers included student speaker and Ph.D. graduate Nada Aljassim and distinguished speaker His Excellency Ali I. Al-Naimi. Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

Dec. 28 to 29, 2018

The Winter Enrichment Program (WEP), one of the hallmarks of KAUST, will return in 2019 from January 13 to January 24 under the theme “TIME” and will be chaired by Professor Valerio Orlando. The two-week program is open to the entire KAUST community.

WEP is designed to inspire students to be creative and think outside the box, showing students how they can impact others and how others can impact them—often in surprising ways. All students must participate in WEP for credit at least once during their studies at KAUST. The Enrichment Office puts on festival-style events with technical and artistic components designed to enrich participants through lectures, workshops, entrepreneurial, cultural and recreational events. Since 2010, the Office has produced a total of 1,450 events; invited 1,240 international and in-Kingdom speakers; and attracted a cumulative audience of 101,850 attendees. The events can also be experienced online, and WEP 2018 reached 2.2 million people. Learn more about WEP and other Enrichment programs at enrichment.kaust.edu.sa.

FARMERS MARKET The aroma of freshly baked Arabic bread welcomed visitors to the KAUST Farmers Market at Discovery Square in January 2019. Other items for sale included dates, maamoul, mixed nuts, coffee, fruit and vegetables, honey, fish and organic products and plants. Community artisans joined Jeddah artisans in the Community Hub, selling items like hand-crafted jewelry, soy candles, arts and crafts, pashminas, homewares and more.

EXPLORE SAUDI ARABIA – AL-JAWF TRIP Forty-five adventurous KAUST community members joined the trip to Saudi Arabia’s city of Al-Jawf organized by Government Affairs in December 2018. The group took part in a guided tour of many interesting sights including Sisra well, the Omar Bin Alkhatab mosque, the Mared Castle, Domah Aljandel Lake and the area’s Olive Festival.

New journeys begin at ninth KAUST Commencement ceremony

On December 14, 2018, KAUST welcomed 243 graduates into its international alumni community at the University’s ninth Commencement ceremony.

Attended by members of the University’s Board of Trustees, including Board Chairman HE Khalid A. Al-Falih, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources; senior leadership; faculty; students; and the KAUST community, the ceremony saw 102 Ph.D. candidates and 141 master’s degree candidates receive their diplomas.

In his Chairman’s Address, HE Al-Falih noted the evening was “an occasion…to mark a number of milestones and celebrations” for KAUST, and thanked the entire community for efforts in making the University a success.

HE Al-Falih added that, although HE Al-Naimi is a graduate of Lehigh and Stanford Universities, when he was born as a Bedouin boy in Saudi Arabia, the only education on offer was in the “university of life.”

“From an early age, however, [HE Al-Naimi] was convinced that real university education has the power to change individuals, change societies and change the world,” he continued. “Through his work at KAUST, he has contributed immensely to giving this and future generations a great choice to pursue their education in life.”

Letting ideas take flight In his speech, HE Al-Naimi recognized that KAUST “has taken its place in the world’s scientific and academic landscape and begun to realize the late King Abdullah’s dream of a new House of Wisdom.” He added, however, that “KAUST is not an ivory tower for academics, but a workshop for brilliant minds and innovative problem solvers…[T]he idea of KAUST…is all about what happens beyond this point on the map…Ideas and innovations are hatched and take flight here in Thuwal, but they make a difference when they soar above our nation and around the world.”

“As new graduates of KAUST,” HE Al-Naimi advised the degree candidates, “you are the inheritors of that idea. Today marks the end of one chapter of your academic career and life…[but] tomorrow a new chapter opens to each and every one of you—a chapter that you will have to write for yourself.” ►

A new journey Nada Aljassim, 2018 Ph.D. graduate and Commencement 2018’s student speaker, echoed HE Al-Naimi’s words in her remarks. Her KAUST experience began in 2008 as a member of the founding cohort of the KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP), through which she completed her bachelor’s degree at University College London. She then returned to KAUST for her master’s degree (’13) and Ph.D. studies, both in environmental science and engineering, and 8

is the first KGSP participant to receive her Ph.D. from KAUST. “Tonight we step into the next chapter of our journeys,” Aljassim told the audience. “Each of our journeys had its own unique beginnings—and it’s a confluence of a lot of hard work and a little bit of good luck that led each of us to this moment here today.

“I was sold on the vision that KAUST will serve as a beacon of knowledge and catalyze solutions for Saudi Arabia and the world…I

want to give back—as I envision we all will—to the Kingdom, to the world and to our shared understanding of reality…Our futures are here! Let’s go on to do great things and never stop learning.”

‘Shine bright’ In his Inaugural Address, KAUST President Tony Chan outlined how his life was also transformed by education.

“I have gone from a boy who grew up in Hong Kong to being

educated and making a career in the U.S. to being president of an outstanding young university in Hong Kong to now leading a unique university with a bold vision in Saudi Arabia,” he said.

“Life is an adventure…I am privileged and honored to be given the opportunity to lead this great institution into its second decade, poised to realize its founding vision for making a mark in the world.”

President Chan encouraged the graduates to “emulate [HE AlNaimi’s] passion for education

and for KAUST and for the opportunities now laid out before [them]…It is up to you to shine bright,” he said. “Bring to your work the values of passion, integrity and excellence KAUST is built on…As you continue to shine, the future will get even brighter—not just for you and KAUST but for the world.”

In his closing remarks to the graduates, HE Al-Falih noted, “You are leaving [KAUST] at a time of tremendous change and great promise, whether here in the Kingdom as it advances towards its Vision 2030 goals or

in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

“As you graduate, know that we will continue to look to you to make a positive, lasting impact in the world. Just as your friends and families are proud of each of you…I know that one day your children and grandchildren will be equally proud knowing you were pioneers during the first decade at one of the world’s greatest universities.”

Honoring Professor Jean Fréchet

Jean Fréchet, senior vice president for Research, Innovation & Economic Development, retired from KAUST at the end of 2018.

As an accomplished and highly cited chemist, researcher and entrepreneur, Fréchet came to KAUST in May 2010 from the University of California, Berkeley.

He has written more than 800 scientific papers with more than 119,000 citations and has about 200 U.S. and international patents.

The number of citations continued to increase since Fréchet’s arrival at KAUST, attesting to the longterm impact of his work.

At KAUST, Fréchet set research strategy and consolidated the full spectrum of research administration into one organization, from distributing research funding with the Office of Sponsored Research to providing centrally available research instrumentation and expertise with the Core Labs to delivering on-site equipment support with Lab Equipment Maintenance. He developed strategies and managed resources to support interdisciplinary, collaborative research bridging science and engineering. He also helped KAUST establish its

vision of becoming a globally renowned research university with an entrepreneurial culture by overseeing the University’s Research Centers and Innovation and Economic Development.

KAUST has benefitted immeasurably under Fréchet’s strong, clear-eyed and effective leadership.

On December 12, 2018, an appreciation celebration took place in the University Library in honor of Fréchet. KAUST President Tony Chan, University leadership and community members attended to honor his service to KAUST and his years of scientific innovation for the world.

Pushing the limits of science on the track In the world of Formula 1 racing, the difference between the quickest driver or the fastest car and the team finishing last comes down to mere fractions of a second per lap. Over the course of an average race of 70 laps, this means a gap of one to two minutes. Those crucial few hundredths of a second that make all the difference are the result of many things: the aerodynamics of the vehicle; the weight of the car; race strategy; the driver; the tires; and the fuel composition.

A recently announced five-year research partnership between McLaren Racing and KAUST focuses on R&D and extreme performance technology. The partnership’s main objective is to push science and engineering to new limits and improve the performance of the Formula 1 race cars.

An ideal center of excellence When McLaren’s racing director, chief engineer and chief business officer came to visit KAUST in December 2017, they were impressed with the University’s state-of-the-art facilities and expertise in key areas like sensors and electronics, numerical simulations on supercomputers and fuel and engine combustion research.

“To engineer technology for such an extreme environment—which a Formula 1 car is—we really need to do better science,” said Mani Sarathy, associate director of the University’s Clean Combustion Research Center.

“Our scientists have to develop new experimental methods and new types of mathematical models. We need to train our students to understand more about very complex systems.”

“The Formula 1 vehicle is a laboratory we don’t have at KAUST. It’s a real-world laboratory.

It’s a place where we can develop new types of fuels [and] new combustion concepts as well as new types of sensors and computer algorithms,” he continued.

The extreme real-world laboratory is all about performance.

The core of the KAUST-McLaren partnership is being reflected in a series of research projects to be selected by a joint Steering Committee that are aimed at advancing research in five main areas: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), machine learning, fuels and lubricants, advanced mathematics and sensors and electronics.

Sensors, computer vision and machine learning There are about 300 sensors and lightweight electronic components on a Formula 1 car. Many of those require battery power, are tethered by cables and add weight to the vehicle. If teams can manage to skim off 2 to 3 kilos by having new types of lighter-weight sensors, this is a significant advantage.

Formula 1 vehicles use fuel but run on a hybrid engine, which is why sensors and electronics are important. They also have an internal combustion engine as well as an energy recovery system powered by batteries and electric motors.

“Anything that can be done to reduce the weight of electronic components and sensors is very valuable. McLaren Racing was interested to learn about what

KAUST does in terms of flexible sensors, lightweight electronics and wireless technologies,” Sarathy noted.

McLaren was impressed with the work of KAUST researchers from the University’s Nanofabrication Core Lab. They met with Atif Shamim, KAUST associate professor of electrical engineering, who works on wireless sensors, and Jürgen Kosel, KAUST associate professor of electrical engineering, who specializes in flexible and lightweight sensors.

Discussions are ongoing about research collaborations to explore those areas.

Another area of investigation is computer vision. Bernard Ghanem, KAUST associate professor of electrical engineering from the University’s Visual Computing Center, focuses his research

efforts in the fields of computer vision, machine learning and image processing. Ghanem has worked on scanning sporting videos and getting computers to recognize what athletes are doing. Similarly, Formula 1 racing offers a wealth of live video feeds, audio and sensor data from the vehicle—which can be more effectively analyzed through machine learning.

The agreement between McLaren and KAUST stipulates the joint intellectual property (IP) sharing of innovations generated from the collaboration. For instance, the development of new sensor technology or computer algorithm may be spun-off into the commercial automotive sector.

“The partnership with McLaren will help us to develop the science into real-world ► 15

applications which will likely cascade from the exciting extremes of F1 to become part of the road-going cars of the future,” said Kevin Cullen, vice president of KAUST Innovation and Economic Development.

with the wider community.

Different types of science and engineering initiatives like a forum during the Formula 1 race in Bahrain are being planned. People from the region and beyond will be invited, and they will have the chance to learn about KAUST and take part in discussions about science and engineering.

The KAUST Steering Committee members are: Sarathy; Dr. Teofilo (Jun) Abrajano, the University’s Office of Sponsored Research director; and Cullen.

this undertaking. The pioneering work of Mani Sarathy and his colleagues at the CCRC, the Extreme Computing Research Center and the Sensor Initiative and the state-of-the-art research infrastructure of the University all converged to create this opportunity to meet the performance challenge posed by McLaren and Formula 1 racing.

Instead of sitting at their desks, the grade 12 biology class and the Environmental Systems and Societies class from The KAUST School (TKS) visited the Ibn Sina Research Station at the King Abdullah Monument on the KAUST campus. Once at the shoreline, Joanne Ellis, a research scientist from the KAUST Red Sea Research Center (RSRC); Marco Fusi, a KAUST postdoctoral researcher; and Timothy Thomson, a RSRC master's degree student, got the class to work in the mangrove forest located there.

The task for the day was to measure the heights of local mangroves, record crab abundances and measure associated changes in the soil properties along a zonation gradient. The seaside outing is an example of the ongoing collaboration between TKS and RSRC researchers. Teachers at TKS and researchers at the University work hard to bring realworld research to every level of education.

A passion for science and desire to share this with her children and students inspired Emma Nason, TKS head of science and biology teacher and mother of two children at the school, to reach out to Ellis, whose children also attend the school.

"As a parent, I want to know that my children are being exposed to the very best around, and in this case, it's high-level science.

It is an enormous privilege to be able to make the most of the... knowledgeable researchers working just down the road," Nason said.

Getting into the thick of it

Diving into learning

Looking beyond the mangroves

Mangroves are small trees or shrubs that have adapted to survive in coastal saline or brackish water. They are commonly found in tropical or subtropical regions, including in Saudi Arabia. The mangrove forest at KAUST includes larger trees called fringe plants that grow along the seaward edge of the coast. These trees are exposed directly to tides and waves and are generally inundated by seawater all year. Moving closer towards the coastline, the plants are dominated by dwarf trees that are affected by the ebbs and flows of the tidal water, surviving in a harsher, more saline environment that becomes arid in the summer.

On another trip, the grade 10 cohort worked with a different group of RSRC researchers, including Matt Tietbohl, Ruben Martins da Costa and Noura Zahran as part of an Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) between Science and English Language and Literature. Students focused on the problem of coral bleaching. They conducted a variety of experiments over several days at the University and got a taste for work as an academic researcher. The activities culminated in a documentary during which students articulated their ideas for biodiversity conservation by implementing persuasive and emotive language.

The RSRC has a history of working with TKS to bring marine biology research into the classroom. In addition to the snorkeling and mangrove trips, the center’s researchers have regularly given presentations on plastic pollution, fish ecology, sustainable fishing and conservation, among other topics.

“We had the students look at how the plant size and crab communities changed as you move from the seaward fringe plants to the inland dwarf trees,” Fusi said. “The students measured the plant circumference and height and logged the number and type of crabs living in this transect. We also brought sensors for measuring oxygen, acidity (pH) and redox potential (oxic/anoxic conditions) in the sediment where the crabs were living.”

On yet another trip, the grade 12 biology class got out into the water with Tietbohl, a KAUST Ph.D. student, as part of an ecological learning unit. Kitted out in snorkeling gear and equipped with waterproof pads, the students carried out line transects of the reef below.

Off the back of the success of the recent trips, the TKS teachers and RSRC researchers are hoping to make the mangrove and snorkeling trips a recurring part of the academic curriculum.

“There’s an opportunity to bring in other [International Baccalaureate] components for the next mangrove trip...Further, the students collected an excellent data set, so there’s an opportunity to embed the statistical analysis of the data within the math curriculum. There are lots of opportunities to expand this field trip and incorporate new ones,” stated Ellis.

Turning windows into solar panels By 2025, 68 percent of the world population is expected to live in urban areas, according to the 2018 Revision of World Urbanization Prospects produced by the United Nations. This means that alternative sources of energy have to be considered when launching future urban projects.

“In the cities of the future, I believe that every building will produce its own energy,” said Derya Baran, KAUST assistant professor of material science and engineering and member of the University’s Solar Center (KSC).

“Everything will go renewable.

There is no other way. I am not saying oil will be gone, but I think in the future we will use it in more valuable ways than just fuel,” she added.

The KSC runs industrially translational projects to commercialize research. Baran and her team have developed a photovoltaic technology that turns any window into a transparent solar panel.

The TAQADAM Startup Accelerator grant-winning spin-out iyris, which was co-founded by Baran, develops building-integrated photovoltaics for indoor applications and facades and windows for buildings and greenhouses that maintain transparency to visible light, keeping the aesthetic aspects of the building. The 20

technology helps reduce the electricity consumption of buildings by as much as 25 percent while generating energy, with additional infrared absorbing properties to manage the heat.

“The transparent solar area is very exciting and a potentially quite large market,” said Iain McCulloch, director of the KSC and KAUST professor of chemical science.

“The technology that Derya and her group are developing with low cost manufacturing could have a big impact.”

More than 70 percent of domestic electricity in Saudi Arabia is consumed in cooling and air

conditioning, according to an in-Kingdom research paper published in 2017. At present, electricity production relies heavily on burning fossil fuels that are not only of high cost but also harm the environment through the release of emissions that increase air pollution. In line with the Saudi Vision 2030 objectives, reliance on fossil fuels for electricity production is expected to be reduced as sustainable sources of energy emerge to fulfill demands.

“I really believe this is the future for new cities. We know that cooling—especially in this region—is huge and it will continue to be a huge problem—even

bigger—with the growing population,” Baran said.

The Red Sea Farm that Mark Tester, KAUST professor of plant science, started with his University colleagues, is iyris’ first customer. His company is an agricultural business based on the research done by the KAUST Physical Science and Engineering division. The purpose is to utilize iyris’ windows to create a better environment for plant growth and increase crop yield.

“This is a really exciting prototype under the umbrella of KAUST, where two ideas are coming together from different perspectives

and building a very nice demonstration of the potential of both technologies,” said McCulloch.

Bridging the gap between the science and the application can be a challenge.

“KAUST provides an environment where these researchers can come together, meet and discuss the technology and also receive support from KAUST to make it a reality. Very often, ideas fail because they don’t have the initial impetus to get over the first hurdle, and once you get that momentum, it becomes much easier...

[What] KAUST can do like no other university is to provide the infrastructure and capability to allow the first hurdle to be overcome,” he added.

“We are pressing ahead, developing our product and looking for investment and partnership to scale up,” Baran added.

As the largest peninsula on Earth, the Arabian Peninsula measures over 3.2 million square kilometers.

For decades, scientists have sought to map the geologic formations of the area and its surrounding seas for the purposes of resource extraction to within one meter. Thanks to record breaking simulations run on the KAUST supercomputer Shaheen, that goal may be within reach.

Shaheen recently completed a set of ultra-resolution subsurface mapping and characterization simulations for the Geophysics Technology Division at the Saudi Aramco EXPEC Advanced Research Center. For the first time, scientists produced a 3D image of the subsurface geologic layers to a 7.5 meter resolution.

“Unlocking ultra-resolution subsurface mapping and characterization at production scale is a major milestone for exploration,” said Ali A. Al-Meshari, manager of EXPEC ARC. “This is a major step toward seamless integration of geophysical, geological and engineering models.”

To put the team’s accomplishment in perspective, it allows scientists to see underground features half the length of a semi-trailer or lorry; one-third the length of a bowling alley; or about three times longer than a sedan car.

KAUST hardware and Aramco software Aramco scientists used integrated GeoDRIVE (Geophysical solution for Dynamic Real-time Image and Velocity Estimation) software to successfully produce a 3D image of subsurface geologic layers at a record resolution of 7.5 meters at production scale. Previous simulations had a resolution of tens of meters.

“The vast computational cost of accurate seismic simulations created a gap between theoretical advancements in the academic world and practical industrial applications,” said Ali Momin, GeoDRIVE project lead. “This provided us with a unique opportunity to build an innovative solution that can satisfy our current needs as well as the future needs of researchers and professionals.”

Shaheen Cray XC-40 supercomputer Supercomputers consist of tens of thousands of CPUs, memory chips, kilometers of networking cables, thousands of disks and hundreds of applications and libraries.

Shaheen, which is located in the KAUST Supercomputing Core Laboratory (KSL), is one of the largest pure CPU systems in the world with a total of 12,348 Intel Haswell CPUs, 790 TB of memory and 17.6 PB of storage. It is currently the largest supercomputer in the Middle East.

Campaigns like the one conducted by the Aramco team require upward of 54,000 simulations using more than 100,000 cores, or around half of the total capacity of Shaheen. Large scale campaigns—referred to as hero runs—require careful optimization of the system.

Supercomputing expertise One key element of a successful hero run is the readiness of the system. A single underperforming component can jeopardize the performance of the entire run. Maciej Olchowik, the systems administrator team lead, and Bilel Hadri, a computational scientist in the KSL, checked the health of all Shaheen components using a special test suite they developed before handing over the system to Aramco scientists.

“My mission is to help scientists use our resource in the most efficient way,” said KSL computational scientist Samuel Kortas. “That is why I developed the software tool Decimate—it makes complex things as simple as possible for end users.”

With the Decimate tool, Aramco scientists were able to test all the possible combinations of cache usage patterns by exploring large numbers of parameter values. The optimum pattern found with the tool was used for the final production run.

Racking up supercomputing records This is the third world record resulting from the productive collaboration between Saudi Aramco and the KAUST Supercomputing Core Lab. The teams previously collaborated to conduct the largest-ever scale reservoir simulation and the largest-ever scale engineering simulation.

Beyond self-driving simulations: teaching machines to learn Teaching algorithms to learn using machine learning is making it possible for cars to do away with human drivers in the near future, but this has also opened up new questions about the limits of our knowledge of the brain and learning.

Bernard Ghanem, KAUST associate professor of electrical engineering from the University’s Visual Computing Center and principal investigator of the Image and Video Understanding Lab, applies machine learning techniques to computer vision for automated navigation (for example, self-driving cars and self-flying unmanned aerial vehicles [UAVs]), video content searching and object tracking, among other topics.

I find it very interesting that we are aiming to imitate a system that we have inside [of] us. It basically means we don’t really understand how our brains work,” explained Ghanem.

Man vs. machine “Creativity is a specific intelligence that is central to what it means to be human. A creative algorithm would be real artificial intelligence— possessing the ability to create. Humans are able to transfer skills from task to task, evolving knowledge without direct training. That’s creative because something was learned without being taught. We’d love to reach creativity in machine learning, but we’re not at that point yet,” Ghanem said.

When developing machine learning algorithms with the ability to create, researchers must first understand what mechanism underlies the transfer of knowledge from one task to another. There are a variety of challenges to overcome, but Ghanem surmises that perhaps researchers need to question the fundamentals—is deep learning the right technique?; what type of learning does this skill require?; and even if we assume deep neural networks is the best method, how do you actually teach transfer?

learning still begins with human input. Selection of a reward function is a crucial aspect in programming algorithms.

“It comes down to design choice. We have to start with the question [of] what reward function do we need to program in order to get our desired outcome? This can be a very complex question to answer,” Ghanem said.

Despite being inspired by the brain’s ability to perform complicated tasks, Ghanem doesn’t think human cognitive strategies and processes are necessarily the only—or even most efficient—outcome of machine learning. The brain is one example of a successful model that machine learning wants to imitate, but, as Ghanem noted, “You can reach the peak of a mountain through many, many roads. It’s about reaching the peak.”

Driving tests for self-driving cars Since Google and other companies started making impressive leaps forward in self-driving cars, the field of autonomous vehicles has experienced an explosion of investment, interest and technological innovation. A recent incident resulting in a fatality in Arizona involving an Uber self-driving car, however, brought the issue of safety to the fore. Ghanem explained that the industry is now wondering whether there should be a testing process before self-driving cars are allowed to perform field tests on the road. He and his team are well placed to deliver a solution.

The team spent the past year developing intelligent automated navigation algorithms learned from simulation (for example, those used in self-driving cars) that teach the vehicle to properly react in dangerous or unusual situations before hitting the road. Some of this work was developed in collaboration with Intel Labs in Germany and tested on the roads near the company’s research center in Munich. The same remote control car was also tested on KAUST roads.

Cars are not the only method of transport getting an autonomous update. Ghanem and postdoctoral fellow Silvio Giancola are collaborating with Boeing to develop machine learning algorithms for airplanes that would allow them to land and taxi without pilot intervention.

KAUST: sharing knowledge with our neighbors For master’s degree and Ph.D. students at KAUST, it’s not all about learning—sometimes students get to be teachers too.

As part of the University’s ongoing Young Learners’ Development Program (YLDP) for students in our neighboring communities, in 2018, KAUST Social Responsibility worked with the University’s Red Sea Research Center (RSRC), the Visual Computing Center and the Coastal and Marine Resources Core Lab to coordinate a series of science outreach events, including an intensive summer school series. Preparing and delivering the varied workshops gave students an opportunity to share their skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for discovery with pupils from local schools in neighboring Thuwal and Qadimah.

Graduate students, researchers and postdoctoral fellows led workshops in marine ecology and oceanography, introducing the intermediate and secondary school pupils to research techniques and equipment used in the marine environment. They also helped carry out hands-on activities for the pupils to conduct experiments and generate results.

Jihad Al Jahdali, a grade 12 student from Thuwal, said, “It was amazing. I was interested in the water types and we did experiments on shells and how they are impacted by acids. We learned about the relationships between corals and fish, growing stages and life expectancy. It was my first time using a microscope!”

Matt Tietbohl, a KAUST marine science Ph.D. student, was impressed with the Thuwal pupils.

“The quality of their questions was outstanding,” Tietbohl said. “The students not only engaged, but they also retained the information.

It was good to see their interest go beyond and to see the curiosity. [The program] is a fantastic initiative. We have the resources in marine science and the reward in the output is so much greater than the input.”

The introduction of summer school was a particular success.

Twelve grade 11 and grade 12 YLDP students attended the three week program which ran alongside the annual RSRC Summer Program for Undergraduates.

The YLDP students attended all the main lectures, with postlecture sessions taking place with Arabic-speaking university students to reinforce their understanding of higher-level learning. The RSRC included the Thuwal students in many of the undergraduate activities, including a trip on the RV Thuwal; backstage talks at the Jeddah Aquarium; and research visits to the fish market. After identifying research projects, the 12 students divided

Since its inception in 2008, the KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) has provided talented Saudi high school graduates with guidance and opportunities critical to their success as undergraduates at premier institutions in the U.S. The KGSP program aims for the skills and perspectives gained by participating students in the U.S. to ready them for their subsequent master’s degree and Ph.D. studies at KAUST while also adding to the cultural and intellectual makeup of the University and the Kingdom.

Muhanned Alsaif and Olla Almajed, two KGSP undergraduate students, recently spoke about how they adjusted to life as college students in the U.S. Both described how the extensive logistical support, personalized advice and ongoing encouragement from their KGSP advisors has provided the stability and confidence to transition into their new surroundings.

Alsaif: The KGSP has created a very welcoming and warm community—both directly through advising and through events sponsored through KGSP, such as group dinners at advisor visits, engagement events and enrichment opportunities.

Almajed: My transition to the U.S. academic system was rather difficult at first, and it took me some time during my Foundation Year to learn to adjust to the differences between Saudi and U.S. teaching styles and studying fully in English instead of Arabic.

My undergraduate university is definitely a challenging academic environment. I am majoring in chemical engineering and I have had to learn ways handle its fast pace. It requires a lot of extra work in order to be successful, but I like to be challenged and I now feel comfortable at CSM.

Muhanned Alsaif (senior, North Carolina State University (NCSU), studying electrical engineering): The change from studying at a Saudi high school to being a U.S. college student was not very difficult because I took [part in] the KGSP Foundation Year. This helped me adjust to U.S. life and culture, so I felt comfortable when I began my undergraduate studies as a freshman.

Olla Almajed (freshman, Colorado School of Mines (CSM), studying chemical engineering): My KGSP advisor was able to guide me as I went through the transition process to the U.S. by providing multiple orientations and always being available to answer all of my questions. My Foundation Year advisor was also very helpful in guiding me through the admissions process and transitioning to CSM.

Alsaif: At NCSU, I have been able to meet many American and international students, and I feel very well-adjusted to college life now. I spend so much time bouncing around from different activities, such as the Underwater Robotics Club, the Saudi Student Association and the Cultural Exchange Network. I enjoy my academics and studying with my electrical engineering classmates.

I prefer to live an active life with a full schedule instead of spending [time] on TV and Facebook— [I’m] making the most of this opportunity!

My KSA: Adventures on horseback in-Kingdom and around the world

It’s six o’clock in the morning on a Saturday and Alison Rankin, communications lead from the University’s Physical Science and Engineering division, tightens the saddle on her favorite thoroughbred horse AlHazm at Trio Ranch in Jeddah. She’s getting ready to ride the ranch’s desert trail while watching the sun come up, after which she and her horse may do some jumping in the arena there. This is a typical Saturday morning for the passionate equestrian.

Rankin grew up on a farm in the beautiful countryside of Marlborough, New Zealand. On her 4th birthday, she got a present every child dreams of: her own pony. Riding soon became a passion, and Alison rode regularly till her mid-30s. Then she moved to the city of Christchurch for work, where it became a challenge to ride regularly. In 2001, she 30

relocated to the Middle East and resumed riding at stables in Riyadh and later in Bahrain. However, when she moved to Dubai, it again became a challenge to go riding frequently, as the stables were located far from the city. When Rankin began working at KAUST in 2011, she discovered she could spend weekends riding and caring for the horses at Trio Ranch.

In 2015, one of her nieces invited her to go with her on a charity horse ride across Mongolia—the ride is the longest endurance horse ride in the world covering 700 kilometers over 10 days.

In preparation for the trip, she became a member of the KAUST self-directed group Kingdom Equestrians so she could go riding every weekend. She also trained by completing a sevenday horse ride in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt, that included galloping across long stretches of sand

and riding in the sea. Two years ago, she completed the ride in Mongolia with her niece.

“You can’t have a bad attitude with a horse—it will remember,” Rankin said.

Rankin recently became president of Kingdom Equestrians and helps the club organize activities at Trio Ranch on a regular basis.

Everyone—children and adults from beginners to advanced horseback riders—can join riding classes. Non-riders are also welcome to come along to interact with the animals.

Rankin’s passion for horseback riding and the opportunity to enable people to interact with horses and meet fellow equestrians at the ranch are all motivators for her dedication to the club and its members.

“Horses are very sensitive animals [who] have a sixth sense, making them in dynamic communication with their surroundings [and] humans,” Rankin noted.

Corrado Calì KAUST researcher awarded at Italian neuroscience conference

KAUST researcher Dr. Corrado Calì recently won an award at the Brainstorming Research Assembly for Young Neuroscientists (BraYn) held in Genoa, Italy, from June 29 to 30, 2018. The BraYn meeting was created with the goal of attracting young researchers (under the age of 40) from different laboratories from Italy, Europe and abroad to come together to share their knowledge and skills and forge collaborative ties between different institutions and research groups.

Calì, who is a research scientist in Dean Pierre Magistretti’s Laboratory of Cellular Imaging and Energetics at KAUST, won 32

an award for a talk based on his current research on how the modulation of glycogen can enhance or prevent the stabilization of synapses, which play a key role in mechanisms of memory.

“I presented work—part of a project in collaboration with KAUST Professor Andrea Falqui and Dr. Elena Vezzoli from the University of Milan—where we investigate the involvement of the lactate shuttle discovered

“One of the [conference] sponsors was the Italian Association for

the Development of Talent and Surplus (AISTAP). Nasir Alfaraj Ph.D. student represents KAUST and Saudi Arabia at the 2018 Chicago Forum on Global Cities

KAUST Ph.D. student Nasir Alfaraj was selected to represent KAUST and Saudi Arabia at the 2018 Chicago Forum on Global Cities in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. The event, which was held from June 5 to 7, 2018, was hosted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and The Financial Times. It brought together more than 80 speakers from 27 countries to discuss the influence of global cities and how attendees could solve pressing global challenges.

In his delegate role, Alfaraj, a Saudi electrical engineering doctoral student under the supervision of KAUST Professor Boon S. Ooi, attended forum panels focusing on water, food and energy security

for sustainable global cities in the future.

Alfaraj completed his master’s degree in electrical engineering at KAUST in 2015 under the supervision of Professor Muhammad Mustafa Hussain. His master’s degree thesis entitled “Reversibly Bistable Flexible Electronics” was published as a cover article in the journal Applied Physics Letters.

He has also published 12 journal papers. His current research focus at the KAUST Photonics Laboratory centers on photonic devices and their applications—especially those pertaining to sustainability.

More specifically, he focuses on the development of special types of light-emitting devices that can

positively contribute to current global issues concerning water, the environment, energy and food.

“I believe my experience at the 2018 Chicago Forum on Global Cities will have a positive impact on me as well as those communities that I will have the opportunity to organize and serve in the future,” Alfaraj emphasized.

Samuel Horváth Master’s degree student wins best poster award at Data Science Summer School

Samuel Horváth, a master’s degree student in the University’s statistics and optimization M.S./Ph.D. program, won a best poster award at the second edition of the Data Science Summer School (DS3). The event took place in Paris from June 25 to 29, 2018, and is one of the largest global data science summer schools. It was co-organized by the Data Science Initiative of École Polytechnique and DATAIA Institute.

The primary goal of DS3 was to provide a series of courses and practical sessions covering the latest advances in the field of data science. Five hundred students, 34

postdoctoral fellows, academics, members of public institutions and professionals from over 30 countries attended the summer school. In a competition featuring 170 posters, Horváth’s poster was one of only two to win the best poster award— which included a €500 cash award.

Horváth’s winning poster entitled “Nonconvex Variance Reduced Optimization with Arbitrary Sampling” is based on a paper of the same name currently under review. The paper features joint work between Horváth and his supervisor Professor Peter Richtárik from the KAUST Visual Computing Center.

“It was an honor to win the award and a big motivation for future work to win this prize among so many great posters [at the event],” Horváth noted. “I would like to thank KAUST and my supervisor for giving me the opportunity to conduct research and travel to conferences and summer schools where I can present my work—which resulted in this prize.”

Michał Mańkowski Ph.D. student wins poster award at the 18th Annual American Society of Transplant Surgeons Symposium

Michał Mańkowski, a Ph.D. student in the University’s Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Science and Engineering division, won the Poster of Distinction Award at the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) 18th Annual State of the Art Winter Symposium earlier this year in the U.S. During the event, Mańkowski’s soapbox presentation was also voted as the symposium’s best solution on how more lives can be saved through transplantation.

Mańkowski presented on behalf of Professor Sommer Gentry, his supervisor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Mańkowski’s winning poster at the symposium was entitled “The Future Is Now: Saving More Lives Through Transplantation,” and it is a result of his summer 2017 research training at Johns Hopkins University under the supervision of Gentry. The winning poster highlighted his ongoing research regarding combinatorial optimization, operation research and management science (with an application in healthcare).

Mańkowski is currently developing an algorithmic and theoretical framework for combinatorial optimization. The application side of his research centers on an ongoing collaboration with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. “[With our collaboration,] we work on supporting organ transplantation via our algorithms and simulations. Also, another effort is to connect both parts of the research,” he noted.

Guy Olivier Ngongang Ndjawa

Ph.D. 2016, material science and engineering

Guy Olivier Ngongang Ndjawa, a native of Cameroon, received his Ph.D. in material science and engineering from KAUST in 2016, with his research focusing on thin film organic solar cells. He has since joined the Organic and Polymer Electronics Laboratory at Princeton University (U.S.) as a postdoctoral researcher.

“I still remember vividly what led me to come to KAUST,” he recalled. “I was still a student at Stellenbosch University in South Africa when a team from KAUST came over to give us a presentation in November of 2009.” Ngongang Ndjawa was immediately intrigued by the vision of the University and the commitment to ensuring KAUST would become a leading scientific and research destination.

“I was very tempted to be part of this new adventure,” he said.

“It was a real pleasure to be [at KAUST]. I worked with an excellent advisor and was given the opportunity to immerse myself in research involving a lot of high-end vacuum processing and spectroscopy tools that were not available in many places,” Ngongang Ndjawa said.

“I formed my professional network thanks to the investment that KAUST made into making all of this network accessible to us,” Ngongang Ndjawa acknowledged.

It was actually through one of the conferences on photovoltaics organized by the KAUST Solar Center that Ngongang Ndjawa connected with Dr. Lynn Loo, a renowned faculty member from Princeton, which led him to his current role.

JANUARY 2019

M.S. 2017, chemical science Maram Al-Malki graduated from KAUST in 2017 with a master’s degree in chemical science,, with her research based at the University’s Clean Combustion Research Center. Her ambition did not stop there— she decided to continue on at KAUST as a Ph.D. student at the University’s Advanced Membranes & Porous Materials Center.

“I’m very interested in developing our energy consumption,” she said. “In my studies, [I want to] build a future that relies on the intelligent use of energy sources and help save these resources for future generations.”

Maram Al-Malki Al-Malki advised current students to work hard and make a lot of mistakes—mistakes are the best way to learn; to get to know new people from different fields; and to help students pave their own paths in their own styles, she explained.

“I would like to thank all of my wonderful friends at the Clean Combustion Research Center,” Al-Malki said. “I will continue benefitting from everything I learned from you, and I hope we can all work together to create a brighter future for the world.”

“After getting my B.A. from Al-Baha University, I chose KAUST because it’s different from all the other universities in the world...[I]t embraces students from different cultures who have diverse and wonderful ideas,” Al-Malki continued.

Ming-Hui Chiu

KAUST postdoctoral fellow

KAUST postdoctoral fellow Ming-Hui Chiu describes himself as a passionate and selfmotivated researcher who is devoted to scientific innovation. Chiu is based in the University’s Physical Science and Engineering (PSE) division. He joined KAUST in the fall of 2014 and is currently a member of the 2D Materials Research Lab.

At KAUST, his research focuses on twodimensional (2D) material heterostructure synthesis and characterization utilizing chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology.

The overarching goal of Chiu’s research is the development and optimization of the CVD technique for transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) growth.

Before joining KAUST, Chiu obtained his master’s degree in electrical engineering from Nation Hsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan.

After graduating from NTHU, he worked as a senior research and development engineer at the electronics manufacturer Au Optronics Corporation before joining the research institute Academia Sinica.

“2D materials have potential to replace silicon when device shrinking to sub-nm scale. The IEEE International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS) also considers 2D materials as one of the possible solutions for next-generation electronic devices. I believe I [can] contribute my knowledge in this field,” Chiu emphasized.

“My background comprises both electrical engineering and material science. This comprehensive background knowledge allows me to address current electronic device challenges from different perspectives,” Chiu noted.

“My research work enables scientists to quickly find the best material combination and shorten future development periods. It will benefit future low dimensional and flexible electronic device development,” he added.

Ph.D. student, material science and engineering Areej Aljarb is a third year Ph.D. student in the University’s material science and engineering program under the supervision of KAUST Professors Lain-Jong Li and Xixiang Zhang. As a member of the KAUST 2D Materials Research Lab, Aljarb’s research interests focus on 2D materials, chemical vapor deposition, density functional theory and electronic structure calculation. Her thesis topic concentrates on controlling the orientation of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) materials.

“I received my bachelor’s degree from the physics department at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in 2009 and received my master’s degree from the same department in 2012. I worked as a lecturer from 2009 to 2014 in KAU. In 2016, I joined the 2D Materials Research Lab...at KAUST as a Ph.D. student. My research interests relate to the controlled growth and exploration of the fundamental phenomena of two-dimensional atomic layer thin materials,” Aljarb said.

“Exploration and discovery have always been my passion, so I decided to pursue my education in an area that aligns my passion for science with a prosperous career direction.”

Areej Aljarb Upon visiting the University in 2012, she was struck by the diversity of KAUST and was equally impressed by the faculty and facilities on hand.

“The cultural diversity was the most striking aspect. The visit opened my eyes to the fact that I can live the experience of studying abroad while being here in Saudi Arabia. [It] is exciting for me to interact with so many cultures. I was impressed with the professors, modern equipment, the facilities and the environment,” Aljarb noted.

“As Ph.D. students, we face challenges,” she continued. “When days get tough, it’s important to remember how advantageous it is—we’re doing this experience so we can get an education in something that interests us. We’re growing our skills and talents so that we can thrive in the field of our interests. It might be a bit demanding at times, but sooner or later, I believe we will know just how significant it is.”

Community roundup As the cooler months of the year began, the KAUST community enjoyed the beautiful weather on campus during the Harbor Arts & Music Fest at the Harbor Walk on November 30, 2018. The event included an Artisan Fair showcasing items made by community members, activities, live music and food trucks.

The KAUST self-directed group the Stitching Club invited the Quilting Bees group from Jeddah to take part in the Quilt Exhibition displaying quilts made with different techniques and colors. A jury awarded prizes for the best quilts and community members voted for their favorites. At the same time, the Artists of KAUST Junior Exhibition in the Harbor Library attracted visitors to see pieces created by talented young community members.

During the fall of 2018 on campus, artist and designer Nadya Suvorova exchanged and developed ideas with researchers from the University’s Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Science and Engineering (CEMSE) division. Suvorova’s time at KAUST was supervised by Professor Wolfgang Heidrich, director of the University’s Visual Computing Center (VCC), and was organized by the Artists-in-Labs Program from the 40

Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts (Switzerland) in collaboration with the KAUST Office of Enrichment Programs and with the support of CEMSE and the KAUST Library.

In November 2018, Suvorova gave a lecture entitled “Unveiling Hidden Dimensions of Light,” during which she talked about her artistic exchange experience at KAUST. While on campus, she worked closely with research scientist Qiang Fu, whose research interests lie in the multidisciplinary area of computational imaging. Suvorova also collaborated with Ph.D. student Simeng Qiu from the VCC. Her interactive work, which sparks curiosity to playfully engage access to and awareness of our natural world through digital media, will be presented during the University’s Winter Enrichment Program, which will take place from January 13 to 24, 2019.

At the beginning of December 2018, the community took part in the “Say ‘no’ to plastic” campaign.

With plastic accounting for 90 percent of the trash in the world’s oceans, and as KAUST is located on the shores of the Red Sea, it’s the community’s duty to advocate for reduced plastic use on campus.

To educate and to raise awareness on refusing plastic bags, water bottles, packaging, dish wares, etc., plastic artwork was displayed at Discovery Square, on campus and at the supermarket, where visitors were given free reusable bags. The campaign was a great success in helping to reduce plastic consumption, and it will lead to a change in sustainable everyday behaviors on campus.

My University Hugh Gyetvai Hugh Gyetvai joined KAUST along with his wife Karen from their home in Colorado, U.S., in May 2015. He works in Graduate Affairs Operations as an onboarding and exiting advisor, guiding admitted students through the many requirements for their student visas.

Answering students’ questions about living in Saudi Arabia is part of Gyetvai’s commitment to making them feel at home.

“The moment I begin to work with the students, I think of them as part of the future KAUST community,” he said.

Gyetvai and his wife were excited to join KAUST so they could connect with people from all over the world and experience the rich culture on campus. His time here so far inspires Gyetvai to make each student’s relocation journey a smooth one.

In the U.S., Gyetvai was passionate about hiking and cycling. Due to the heat in Saudi Arabia, he adjusted to pursue his favorite activities—he and his wife both cycle indoors at the on campus spinning classes, or they join in rides with the KAUST Red Sea Cyclists on Friday mornings during the cooler months.

One of his favorite activities on campus is riding his bicycle to the University’s King Abdullah Monument and watching the tropical fish in the water nearby.

Since joining KAUST, Gyetvai and his wife have visited the Netherlands, Belgium, Morocco, Spain, France, Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, the UAE, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Portugal and Malta. From his travels around the Middle East, he found “wonderful people who are simply welcoming and friendly.

You can never learn enough about a culture through documentaries, movies and popular media alone,” he said.

Where do you read The Beacon?

This month’s submission comes from Abdullah Al Abdulghani, a master’s degree student from the KAUST Catalysis Center. Al Abdulghani photographed a “star trails” Beacon through a camera exposure time of one hour, producing a composite photograph consisting of 218 shots, each with an exposure time of 15 seconds.

“The exposure time made the stars appear to be moving along precise arcs because of the Earth’s precise rotation,” Al Abdulghani explained.

Al Abdulghani’s longtime fascination with photos of the Milky Way led him to pursue astrophotography, and in April 2018 he finally purchased a tripod, a digital camera with low-light capabilities and a fast wide-angle lens.

“In addition to equipment, astrophotography requires ideal sky conditions, but a clear dark sky is hard to find nowadays,” he said. “In this photo of the Beacon, I wanted to combine two sources of inspiration. The first one is the Beacon itself—the arrangement of the Beacon’s asymmetric hexagons is artistically pleasing and must have been architecturally challenging. The second source of inspiration is the stars and their movement in the sky. By combining the Beacon and star trails in one photo, art meets natural beauty.”

‫جامعتي كاوست‬ ‫هيو يتفاي‬ ‫ممارســة هوايتهما المفضلة من خالل المشــاركة في‬ ‫إنضــم هيو يتفاي مــع زوجته كارين إلى جامعة الملك‬ ‫حلقــات ركــوب الدراجات في األماكن المغلقة‪ ،‬أو‬ ‫عبــداهلل للعلــوم والتقنية‪ ،‬قادمين من منزلهم في‬ ‫المشــاركة في رحالت صباح يوم الجمعة‪ ،‬مع دراجي‬ ‫كــوالرادو في الواليات المتحدة‪ ،‬في مايو ‪.2015‬‬ ‫البحر األجمر في كاوســت في أنحاء الحرم الجامعي‪،‬‬ ‫ويعمل هيو في إدارة عمليات قســم شــؤون الدراسات‬ ‫خالل األشــهر الباردة نسـ ً‬ ‫ـبيا‪ .‬ومن هوايته المفضلة‬ ‫العليــا‪ ،‬كمستشــار لعملية دخول الطلبة وخروجهم‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليــا‪ ،‬ركــوب الدراجة إلى معلم الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫ومســاعدة الطلبة المقبولين في كاوســت في عملية‬ ‫الحصول على تأشــيرة الدراســة‪ .‬ومن مهام هيو‪ ،‬مساعدة التذكاري‪ ،‬ومراقبة األســماك اإلستوائية التي تعيش‬ ‫الطلبــة على التأقلم علــى الحياة في المملكة‪ ،‬واإلجابة في المياه المجاورة‪.‬‬ ‫عن جميع أســئلتهم التي تتعلق بهذا الموضوع‪.‬‬ ‫منذ إنضمامهما إلى كاوســت‪ ،‬تمكن هيو وزوجته‬ ‫من زيارة كل من هولندا وبلجيكا والمغرب وأســبانيا‬ ‫وكان هيو وزوجته متحمســان لإلنضمام إلى كاوســت‪،‬‬ ‫وتجربــة العمل في مجتمع متعدد الجنســيات والثقافات وفرنســا واألردن ولبنان وقطر واإلمارات العربية‬ ‫المتحدة وتايالند وماليزيا وســنغافورة والبرتغال‬ ‫فــي مدينة جامعيــة حديثة‪ .‬وبفضل المدة التي قضاها‬ ‫هيو في كاوســت‪ ،‬أصبح يعتبر أنه من مســؤولياته‪ ،‬توفير ومالطا‪ .‬ومن خالل تجربة ســفره في الشــرق األوسط‪،‬‬ ‫وجد هيو أبناء المنطقة "أناسـ ًـا لطيفين‪ ،‬بســطاء‬ ‫عملية إنتقال ســهلة للطلبة إلى كاوســت والمملكة‪.‬‬ ‫بمحبتهم وصداقتهم"‪ .‬ويقول ‪ ":‬ال يكفي أن تشــاهد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫المسلســات الوثائقية أو األفالم أو حتى األخبار‪،‬‬ ‫ولعا‬ ‫فــي دياره فــي الواليات المتحدة‪ ،‬كان هيو ُم‬ ‫بالمشــي لمسافات طويلة (‪ )Hiking‬وركوب الدراجات‪ .‬لتعــرف الثقافات والحضارات من حولك"‪.‬‬ ‫وبســبب طقس المملكة الحار‪ ،‬إســتطاع هيو وزوجته من‬

‫وفي مطلع ديســمبر ‪ ،2018‬شارك‬ ‫مجتمع كاوســت في حملة "ال‬ ‫للبالســتيك"‪ ،‬وذلك بهدف تقليل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يشكل‬ ‫إســتخدام البالستيك الذي‬ ‫‪ 90‬بالمئــة من النفايات الموجودة‬ ‫فــي بحار ومحيطات العالم‪ ،‬األمر‬ ‫الذي يحتم مســؤولية كبيرة على‬ ‫كاوســت ومجتمعها كونهما يقعان‬ ‫على شــواطئ البحر األحمر‪ .‬وألغراض‬ ‫التثقيف والتوعية بشــأن مخاطر‬ ‫األكيــاس وزجاجات المياه واألواني‬ ‫وغيرها من المنتجات البالســتيكية‪،‬‬ ‫تــم عرض عمل فني مصنوع من‬ ‫البالســتيكي في ساحة االكتشاف‬ ‫ضمــن الحرم الجامعي وقرب‬ ‫الســوبرماركت‪ .‬وتم توفير أكياساً‬ ‫مجانية يمكن إعادة اســتخدامها لزوار‬ ‫هــذه المناطق‪ .‬وحققت الحملة نجاحاً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا‪ ،‬إذ ســاعدت في تقليل استهالك‬ ‫البالســتيك‪ ،‬ومن المتوقع أن تؤدي‬ ‫إلى تغيير في الســلوكيات اليومية‬ ‫المســتدامة في أنحاء الحرم الجامعي‪.‬‬

‫أخبار المجتمع‬ ‫مع بدء الشــهور المعتدلة‪ ،‬اســتمتع مجتمع جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت) بالطقس‬ ‫الجميــل فــي رحاب الحرم الجامعي‪ ،‬خالل مهرجان‬ ‫فنون وموســيقى‪ ،‬الذي أقيم في ممشــى المرفأ في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫معرضا للحرفيين‪،‬‬ ‫‪ 30‬نوفمبــر ‪ .2018‬وتضمــن المهرجان‬ ‫وتضمن‬ ‫ُعــرض فيه أعمــال ومنتجات أعضاء المجتمع‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا باقة من األنشــطة والموســيقى الحية وعربات‬ ‫الطعام‪ .‬كما وجه نادي الخياطة في كاوســت‪،‬‬ ‫وهي مجموعة يديرها أعضاء من مجتمع كاوســت‪،‬‬ ‫دعــوة إلــى مجموعة كويلتينج بييز (‪)Quilting Bees‬‬ ‫من جدة‪ ،‬للمشــاركة في معرض ّ‬ ‫اللحف والبطانيات‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫لحفا مصنوعــة بتقنيات وألوان مختلفة‪.‬‬ ‫الذي اســتعرض‬ ‫ومنحــت لجنة تحكيــم جوائز ألفضل اللحف المعروضة‪،‬‬ ‫صوت أفراد المجتمــع للمعروضات التي أعجبتهم‪.‬‬ ‫فيمــا ّ‬ ‫وخالل المهرجان‪ ،‬جذب فنانو "معرض كاوســت‬ ‫للصغــار"‪ ،‬والــذي أقيم في مكتبة المرفأ‪ ،‬الزوار‬ ‫لمشــاهدة اللوحات الفنيــة التي أعدها أعضاء المجتمع‬ ‫األصغر سنّ ًا والموهوبون‪.‬‬ ‫خــال خريف عــام ‪ ،2018‬تبادلت الفنانة والمصممة‬ ‫ناديا ســوفوروفا بعض األفكار‪ ،‬وطورتها مع باحثين‬ ‫من قســم العلوم والهندســة الحاسوبية والكهربائية‬ ‫والحســابية في كاوست‪ .‬وكانت سوفوروفا قد‬ ‫أمضت وقتا في كاوســت تحت إشــراف البروفيسور‬ ‫فولفجانج هايدرك‪ ،‬مدير مركز الحوســبة المرئية في‬ ‫الجامعة‪ .‬وتواجدها في كاوســت كان ضمن إطار‬

‫خريجة دكتوراه‬ ‫في هندســة وعلوم المواد‬

‫تدرس الطالبة أريج الجرب درجة الدكتوراة في برنامج هندســة‬ ‫وعلــوم المواد في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية(كاوســت)‪،‬‬ ‫تحت إشــراف البروفيســور لين جونغ لي والبروفيسور زيزيانغ زانغ‪.‬‬ ‫أيضــا عضو في مختبر أبحــاث المواد ثنائية االبعاد (‪ )2-D‬التابع‬ ‫وهــي ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫للجامعــة‪ ،‬حيــث تجري أبحاثا على المواد ثنائية األبعاد وترســب البخار‬ ‫الكيميائــي والنظرية الوظيفية للكثافة وحســاب البنية اإللكترونية‪.‬‬ ‫ويركــز موضوع أطروحتها البحثيــة على معادن الكالكوجينيدات‬ ‫الثنائيــة االنتقالية (‪ ،)TMDs‬والتــي تمهد الطريق ألقصى تصغير‬ ‫ممكــن للتطبيقات اإللكترونية‪.‬‬ ‫وتقــول أريج‪":‬حصلت على درجة البكالوريوس من قســم الفيزياء في‬ ‫جامعــة الملــك عبدالعزيز في عام ‪ ،2009‬ودرجة الماجســتير من نفس‬ ‫القســم في عام ‪ .2012‬وعملت محاضر في الفترة مابين ‪2009‬‬ ‫و‪ 2014‬في نفس الجامعة‪ .‬ثم التحقت بكاوســت عام ‪،2016‬‬ ‫كطالبــة دكتوراة فــي مختبر أبحاث المواد ثنائية االبعاد (‪.)2-D‬‬ ‫وتتركــز اهتماماتي البحثية على دراســة الظواهر الجوهرية للمواد‬ ‫ثنائيــة االبعاد ذات الطبقات الذريــة الرقيقة‪ .‬ولطالما كان البحث‬ ‫واالكتشــاف شــغفي الدائم‪ ،‬لذا قررت مواصلة دراستي في مجال‬ ‫واعدا"‪.‬‬ ‫يتيــح لــي إجراء األبحاث العلمية ويحقق لي مســتقبال مهنيا‬ ‫ً‬

‫أريج‬ ‫الجرب‬ ‫زارت أريج كاوســت أول مرة عام ‪ ،2012‬حيث أعجبت‬ ‫بمجتمــع الجامعة المتنوع ومســتوى أعضاء هيئة التدريس‬ ‫والمختبــرات والمرافــق‪ .‬وتقول أريج عن ذلك‪ ":‬كان التنوع‬ ‫الثقافي في كاوســت الجانب األكثر لفتً ا لالنتباه‪ .‬لقد‬ ‫فتحــت هــذه الزيارة عيني علــى حقيقة أنه يمكنني أن أعيش‬ ‫تجربة الدراســة بالخارج أثناء وجودي هنا في المملكة‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حقا ان تتعرف على العديد من الثقافات‬ ‫أنه شــيء رائع‬ ‫المختلفــة‪ .‬لقد أعجبت بأســاتذة الجامعة والتجهيزات‬ ‫والمرافــق المتطــورة والبيئة الفريدة‪ .‬وكطالبة دكتوراة‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تماما أهمية أن نطور من أنفســنا ونحســن مهاراتنا‪،‬‬ ‫أدرك‬ ‫حتــى نتمكن من االزدهار فــي مجال تخصصنا مهما كانت‬ ‫التحديات والعقبات"‪.‬‬

‫مينغ هوى‬ ‫تشيو‬ ‫يصف مينغ هوي تشــيو‪ ،‬باحث ما بعد الدكتوراة في‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبد اهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت) نفســه‬ ‫ومتفان لالبتكار العلمي‪.‬‬ ‫متحمس وشــغوف‬ ‫بأنه باحث‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫انضم تشــيو إلى كاوســت في خريف عام ‪ ،٢٠١٤‬وهو‬ ‫حاليـ ًـا عضو في مختبــر أبحاث المواد ثنائية األبعاد في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قســم العلوم والهندسة الفيزيائية (‪.)PSE‬‬ ‫قبل انضمامه إلى كاوســت‪ ،‬نال تشــيو درجة الماجستير‬ ‫في الهندســة الكهربائية من جامعة ‪Nation Hsing‬‬ ‫‪ )Hua) NTHU‬فــي تايــوان‪ ،‬وعمل بعد تخرجه كمهندس‬ ‫أبحاث وتطوير في شـ�ركة( (�‪Au Optronics Corpora‬‬ ‫‪ ) tion‬لإللكترونيــات قبــل انضمامه إلى معهد األبحاث‬ ‫(‪.)Academia Sinica‬‬ ‫"تضم خلفيتي العلمية ّ ً‬ ‫كل من الهندســة‬ ‫يقول تشــيو‪:‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الكهربائية وعلم المادة‪ .‬وتســمح لي هذه المعرفة‬ ‫األساسية الشــاملة‪ ،‬التعامل مع تحديات األجهزة‬ ‫اإللكترونيــة الحاليــة من وجهات نظر مختلفة "‪.‬‬

‫خريج دكتوراه‬ ‫في الهندسة الكهربائية‬

‫يركز بحث تشــيو في كاوســت على تركيب وتوصيف المادة غير‬ ‫المتجانســة ثنائية األبعاد (‪ )2D‬باســتخدام طرق ترسيب األبخرة‬ ‫الكيميائية (‪ ،)CVD‬التي تمكن من طالء مســاحات كبيرة دون‬ ‫الحاجــة إلى معدات تفريغ هواء باهظة الثمن كالتي تُ ســتخدم‬ ‫في الطرق األخرى‪ .‬ويعتبر تشــو أن الهدف الرئيســي ألبحاثه هو‬ ‫تطوير وتحســين طرق ترســيب األبخرة الكيميائية‪ ،‬النتقال معادن‬ ‫الكالكوجينيــدات الثنائية االنتقالية (‪.)TMDs‬‬ ‫وتعتبــر جمعية مهندســي الكهرباء وااللكترونيات ( ‪ )IEEE‬الدولية‬ ‫المــواد ثنائية األبعاد‪ ،‬كأحد الحلــول الممكنة لألجهزة اإللكترونية‬ ‫من الجيل التالي‪ .‬ويقول تشــيو‪ ":‬أعتقد أنه يمكنني المســاهمة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يمكن العلماء‬ ‫فــي معرفتــي في هذا المجال‪ .‬فعملــي البحثي قد‬ ‫من العثور بســرعة على أفضل مزيج من المواد‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى‬ ‫تقصير الفترات المســتقبلية الالزمة للتطوير‪ ،‬والمســاهمة في‬ ‫تطويــر أجهــزة إلكترونية مرنة و ذات أبعاد منخفضة‪".‬‬

‫طالبة ماجستير‬ ‫في علوم الكيمياء‬

‫تخرجــت مــرام المالكي‪ ،‬من جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوســت) بدرجة الماجســتير في تخصص علوم الكيمياء في العام‬ ‫‪ .2017‬ولم يتوقف طموحها عند هذا الحد‪ ،‬فقررت مواصلة دراســتها‬ ‫بعــد انتهائهــا من الماجســتير في مركز أبحاث االحتراق النظيف‪،‬‬ ‫والتحقت بمركز األغشــية والمواد المســامية المتقدمة في كاوست‬ ‫للحصــول على درجة الدكتوراة‪.‬‬ ‫وتقــول المالكــي‪ " :‬انا مهتمة جدا في تطوير طريقة اســتهالكنا‬ ‫للطاقــة‪ .‬وبنــاء على ذلك‪ ،‬التحقــت أوال بمركز أبحاث االحتراق النظيف‬ ‫في كاوســت للحصول على الماجســتير‪ ،‬وحاليا أتابع دراستي في‬ ‫مركز األغشــية والمواد المســامية المتقدمة لدرجة الدكتوراة‪ ،‬بهدف‬ ‫بناء مســتقبل يعتمد االســتخدام الذكي لمصادر الطاقة ويحفظها‬ ‫لألجيال القادمة"‪.‬‬

‫مرام‬ ‫المالكي‬ ‫ـخصيا‪ ،‬ووسعت معرفتي في‬ ‫في كاوســيت الكثير إلي شـ ً‬ ‫مجــاالت العلــوم المتنوعة واألبحاث الفريدة‪ ،‬وفرت تجربة‬ ‫مميزة مع اشــخاص مميزين‪ ،‬تعلمــت الكثير بالعمل معهم"‪.‬‬ ‫وقدمت مرام نصيحة للطلبة الحاليين بأن يعملوا بجد‪،‬‬ ‫ويرتكبوا الكثير من األخطاء إذ أنها أفضل طريقة للتعلم‪،‬‬ ‫باإلضافة إلى التعرف على أشخاص جدد من مجاالت‬ ‫وشق طرقهم الخاصة بأنفسهم وبأسلوبهم الخاص‪.‬‬ ‫مختلفة‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫واختتمت مرام‪ ،‬قائلة‪ " :‬أود أن أشــكر كل أصدقائي‬ ‫الرائعيــن في مركز أبحاث االحتراق النظيف‪ :‬بســببكم كانت‬ ‫مستعينة‬ ‫رحلة الماجســتير مميزة ورائعة‪ .‬سأســتمر بالعمل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ـتقبال مشــرقا للعالم"‪.‬‬ ‫بما تعلمته منكم‪ ،‬لنصنع جميعنا مسـ‬

‫وتضيــف المالكــي‪ " :‬بعد تخرجي مــن مرحلة البكالوريوس من جامعة‬ ‫الباحــة‪ ،‬اخترت كاوســت إلمتيازها عن باقــي جامعات العالم بإحتضانها‬ ‫طلبــة من ثقافات مختلفــة وأصحاب أفكار متنوعة ورائعة‪ ،‬إضافة‬ ‫الــى مســتوى األبحاث المميز الذي تقدمــه الجامعة‪ .‬وبالفعل لم يخب‬ ‫ظني ً‬ ‫أبدا‪ ،‬فقد كانت فترة دراســتي في كاوســت مميزة ومليئة‬ ‫بتحديــات تعلمــت منها الكثير‪ .‬إذ أضافت فترة الماجســتير التي قضيتها‬

‫غاي أوليفير‬ ‫ندجاوا‬ ‫حصل الخريج غاي أوليفير نغونغانغ ندجاوا من الكاميرون‪ ،‬على‬ ‫درجة الدكتوراة في هندسة وعلوم المواد من جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم و التقنية(كاوست) في عام ‪ .2016‬وتركزت‬ ‫أبحاثه أثناء دراسته في الجامعة على الخاليا الشمسية‬ ‫العضوية الرقيقة‪ .‬وانضم بعد تخرجه إلى مختبر اإللكترونيات‬ ‫العضوية والبوليمرات في جامعة برينستون (الواليات المتحدة‬ ‫األمريكية) كباحث ما بعد الدكتوراة‪.‬‬ ‫تعرف غاي على كاوست أول مرة‪ ،‬بعد مقابلة فريق من‬ ‫ممثلي الجامعة كان في زيارة لجامعته االم لتقديم عرض‬ ‫وشرح عن كاوست في نوفمبر ‪ ،2009‬حيث أعجب ً‬ ‫جدا‬ ‫رائدا‬ ‫برؤية الجامعة الطموحة والتزامها بأن تصبح‬ ‫مقصدا ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫للبحث العلمي‪ ،‬األمر الذي بحسب ندجاوا هو أكثر ما حمسه‬ ‫لإلنضمام للجامعة ّ‬ ‫جزءا من هذه‬ ‫وولد لديه دافع قوي ليكون ً‬ ‫الرحلة الجديدة‪.‬‬ ‫وأشاد غاي بما توفره كاوست من مختبرات ومرافق متطورة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن شبكات وفرص التواصل الفريدة‬ ‫ساعدته في أبحاثه‪،‬‬ ‫والمفيدة من الناحية المهنية‪ ،‬كالمؤتمرات الدولية أو تلك‬ ‫التي تستضيفها الجامعة‪ ،‬والتي تعكس التزامها بإتاحة كافة‬

‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مشرقا لطلبتها‪ ،‬وزمالء ما بعد الدكتوراة‪،‬‬ ‫مستقبال‬ ‫الموارد التي تضمن‬ ‫والعلماء‪ ،‬وأعضاء هيئة التدريس‪ .‬ويوضح غاي ذلك‪ " :‬بنيت شبكتي‬ ‫المهنية من خالل االستثمار في شبكات التواصل العالمية المتميزة التي‬ ‫وفرتها لي كاوست"‪.‬‬ ‫وفي أحد المؤتمرات حول الخاليا الشمسية‪ ،‬التي نظمها مركز أبحاث‬ ‫الطاقة الشمسية في الجامعة‪ ،‬استطاع غاي التواصل مع الدكتور لين‬ ‫لو‪ ،‬عضو هيئة التدريس الشهير من جامعة برينستون‪ .‬وكانت هذه نقطة‬ ‫البداية في حصوله على منصبه الحالي في جامعة برينستون‪.‬‬ ‫وعبر غاي عن امتنانه العميق للجامعة بقوله‪ ":‬سررت ً‬ ‫جدا بالتحاقي‬ ‫بكاوست‪ ،‬حيث تمكنت من العمل مع هيئة تدريس متميزة‪ ،‬وتمكنت‬ ‫من إجراء أبحاث متقدمة كثيرة باستخدام مرافق وتجهيزات متطورة‪ ،‬غير‬ ‫متوفرة في العديد من المؤسسات األكاديمية األخرى "‪.‬‬

‫جائزة الملصق المتميز في معرض الفنون الشتوية لندوة الجمعية‬ ‫األمريكية الثامنة عشر لجراحي زراعة األعضاء‬

‫شاركت كاوست في معرض الفنون‬ ‫الشتوية لندوة الجمعية األمريكية الثامنة‬ ‫عشر لجراحي زراعة األعضاء (‪ ،)ASTS‬الذي‬ ‫أقيمت في وقت سابق من هذا العام‬ ‫في الواليات المتحدة األمريكية‪ .‬وفاز‬ ‫طالب الدكتوراة ميكال مايكوفسكي‪،‬‬ ‫من قسم العلوم والهندسة الحاسوبية‬ ‫والكهربائية والحسابية (‪ )CEMSE‬في‬ ‫الجامعة‪ ،‬بجائزة الملصق المتميز للندوة‪،‬‬ ‫حيث شارك نيابة عن مشرفه‪ ،‬األستاذ‬ ‫سومر جينتري‪ ،‬من كلية الطب بجامعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا التصويت على‬ ‫جونز هوبكنز‪ .‬وتم‬ ‫عرضه باعتباره أفضل الحلول المطروحة‬ ‫في الندوة‪ ،‬إلنقاذ المزيد من األرواح‬ ‫بواسطة زراعة األعضاء‪.‬‬

‫وجاء ملصق مايكوفسكي الفائز‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا‪:‬‬ ‫في الندوة بعنوان "المستقبل‬ ‫إنقاذ المزيد من األرواح من خالل‬ ‫زراعة األعضاء"‪ ،‬كنتيجة لعمله البحثي‬ ‫في صيف ‪ ،2017‬في جامعة جونز‬ ‫هوبكنز تحت إشراف البروفيسور‬ ‫جينتري‪ .‬واستعرض ملصقه الفائز أبحاثه‬ ‫المستمرة عن عملية التحسين التجميعي‪،‬‬ ‫وبحوث العمليات الجراحية وعلم اإلدارة‬ ‫وتطبيقات الرعاية الصحية‪.‬‬

‫خوارزمية ونظرية‪ ،‬لعملية التحســين‬ ‫التجميعــي أو التوافقي‪ ،‬بهدف البحث‬ ‫وتحديد الحل المناســب‪ .‬أما من الناحية‬ ‫التطبيقية‪ ،‬فلدى مايكوفســكي أبحاث‬ ‫تعاونية مســتمرة مع كلية جونز هوبكنز‬ ‫للطــب‪ .‬وحول هذا التعاون يقول‬ ‫مايكوفســكي‪ ":‬تركز أبحاثنا المشتركة‬ ‫علــى دعم عمليات زراعة األعضاء‪ ،‬من‬ ‫خــال تطوير الخوارزميات والمحاكاة‬ ‫الحاسوبية"‪.‬‬

‫جائــزة أفضــل ملصق أبحاث في المدرســة الصيفية لعلوم البيانات‬

‫فــاز صموئيل هورفاث‪ ،‬طالب درجة‬ ‫الماجســتير في برنامج اإلحصاء لدرجتي‬ ‫الماجســتير والدكتوراة في جامعة‬ ‫الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوســت)‪ ،‬بجائزة أفضل ملصق بحثي‬ ‫في النســخة الثانية من المدرسة‬ ‫الصيفيــة لعلوم البيانات (‪ )DS3‬التي‬ ‫أقيمت في مدينة باريس في فرنســا‪،‬‬ ‫فــي الفترة من ‪ 25‬إلى ‪ 29‬يونيو‬ ‫‪ .2018‬وتعتبر هذه المدرســة من أكبر‬ ‫المــدارس الصيفية لعلوم البيانات في‬ ‫العالم‪ ،‬حيث شــارك في تنظيمها مبادرة‬ ‫علوم البيانات في مدرســة العلوم‬ ‫التطبيقية في فرنسـ�ا( (�‪École Poly‬‬ ‫‪ ،)technique‬ومعهد داتايا (‪.)DATAIA‬‬

‫وتهدف المدرســة الصيفية لعلوم‬ ‫البيانات إلى توفير سلســلة من التدريب‬ ‫والــدورات العملية التي تغطي أحدث‬ ‫المواضيــع والتطورات في مجال علوم‬ ‫البيانات‪ ،‬بمشــاركة ‪ 500‬طالب وطالبة‬ ‫وزمــاء ما بعد الدكتوراة‪ ،‬واألكاديميين‬ ‫واألكاديميات وأعضاء المؤسسات‬ ‫العامــة‪ ،‬والمهنيين من أكثر من ‪30‬‬ ‫دولــة‪ .‬وفاز ملصق أبحاث هورفاث‬ ‫ملصقا‪ ،‬وتم‬ ‫في مســابقة ضمت ‪170‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اختيار ملصقــه من بين ملصقين إثنين‬ ‫وقــع عليهما اختيــار لجنة التحكيم للفوز‬ ‫بالجائزة‪ ،‬والتي شــملت جائزة نقدية‬ ‫بلغــت قيمتها ‪ 500‬يورو‪.‬‬ ‫واســتند ملصق هورفاث الفائز‪ ،‬على‬ ‫ورقة بحثية تحمل االســم نفسه وهي‬

‫حاليا‪ ،‬وتتناول العمل‬ ‫قيــد المراجعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫المشــترك بينه وبين مشرفه‪ ،‬البروفيسور‬ ‫بيتر ريتشــتريك‪ ،‬من مركز الحوســبة المرئية‬ ‫في كاوست‪.‬‬ ‫ويقــول صموئيل هورفاث‪ " :‬كان فوزي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عظيما وحافزً ا‬ ‫شرفا‬ ‫بهذه المســابقة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا كــي أواصل العمل للفوز بالمزيد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫من الجوائز في المســتقبل‪ ،‬خصوصاً‬ ‫أن هذا الحدث اشــتمل على العديد‬ ‫من الملصقات الرائعة‪ .‬أود أن أشــكر‬ ‫كاوســت ومشرفي البروفيسور بيتر‪،‬‬ ‫على إتاحة الفرصة لي للمشــاركة‬ ‫فــي المؤتمرات والمدارس الصيفية‬ ‫والتعريــف بأعمالي وأبحاثي‪ ،‬األمر الذي‬ ‫أســفر عن فوزي بهذه الجائزة‪".‬‬

‫ناصر الفرج‬ ‫ممثل كاوســت في منتدى شــيكاغو للمدن العالمية‬ ‫لعام ‪2018‬‬

‫احتضنت مدينة مدينة شيكاغو‪ ،‬بوالية‬ ‫إلينوي األمريكية في الفترة من ‪ 5‬الى‬ ‫‪ 7‬يونيو الماضي‪ ،‬منتدى شيكاغو للمدن‬ ‫العالمية لعام ‪ .2018‬وكانت المملكة‬ ‫حاضرة في هذا الحدث الدولي‪ ،‬حيث اختير‬ ‫طالب الدكتوراة السعودي في الهندسة‬ ‫الكهربائية‪ ،‬ناصر الفرج‪ ،‬الذي يشرف عليه‬ ‫البروفيسور بون أوي من جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبد اهلل للعلوم والتقنية(كاوست)‪ ،‬لتمثيل‬ ‫الجامعة والمملكة في هذا المنتدى‪ .‬ويرعى‬ ‫المنتدى كل من مجلس شيكاغو للشؤون‬ ‫العالمية وصحيفة الفايننشال تايمز البريطانية‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫متحدثا من ‪27‬‬ ‫وشارك فيه أكثر من ‪80‬‬ ‫دولة‪ ،‬ناقشوا مدى التأثير الذي تحدثه المدن‬ ‫العالمية‪ ،‬وكيفية وضع الحلول للتحديات‬ ‫العالمية الملحة‪.‬‬

‫وأدار صحفيين من الفايننشال تايمز خالل فترة‬ ‫المنتدى‪ ،‬سلسلة من المناقشات والمحادثات‬ ‫السريعة وورش العمل المكثفة‪ ،‬بهدف‬ ‫تحسين فعالية وإدارة الشبكات في المدن‪.‬‬ ‫وشارك طالب الدكتوراة‪ ،‬ناصر الفرج‪ ،‬في‬ ‫حلقات نقاش تضمنت موضوعات في مجال‬ ‫المياه والغذاء وأمن الطاقة للمدن العالمية‬ ‫المستدامة في المستقبل‪.‬‬ ‫وكان الفرج قد أكمل درجة الماجستير في‬ ‫الهندسة الكهربائية في كاوست عام ‪،2015‬‬ ‫تحت إشراف األستاذ محمد مصطفى حسين‪.‬‬ ‫ونُ شرت أطروحته لدرجة الماجستير كمقالة‬ ‫في المجلة العلمية ‪Applied Physics‬‬ ‫‪ ،Letters‬كما قام بنشر ‪ 12‬ورقة بحثية‬ ‫في منشورات علمية مختلفة‪ .‬ويركز بحثه‬ ‫الحالي في مراكز مختبر الفوتونات الضوئية‬

‫في كاوست‪ ،‬على األجهزة الفوتونية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا تلك المتعلقة‬ ‫الضوئية وتطبيقاتها‪،‬‬ ‫باالستدامة‪ .‬باإلضافة إلى أبحاثه المتعلقة‬ ‫بتطوير األجهزة الباعثة للضوء‪ ،‬التي يمكن‬ ‫أن تساهم بشكل كبير في معالجة القضايا‬ ‫العالمية الحالية المتعلقة بالمياه والبيئة‬ ‫والطاقة والغذاء‪.‬‬ ‫ويؤكد ناصر‪ ":‬استفدت ً‬ ‫جدا من تجربتي في‬ ‫منتدى شيكاغو للمدن العالمية لعام ‪،2018‬‬ ‫حيث كان لها أثر إيجابي كبير وأتوقع ان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫شخصيا وعلى المجتمع الذي‬ ‫علي‬ ‫ينعكس‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫سأعمل على خدمته في المستقبل"‪.‬‬

‫فــاز باحث جامعة الملك عبد اهلل‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت)‪ ،‬الدكتور‬ ‫كــورادو كالي‪ ،‬بجائزة مؤتمر أبحاث‬ ‫العصــف الذهني لعلماء األعصاب‬ ‫الشــباب (‪ ،)BraYn‬في جنوا بإيطاليا‪،‬‬ ‫الــذي أقيم في الفترة من ‪ 29‬إلى‬ ‫‪ 30‬يونيــو ‪ .2018‬وهدف المؤتمر إلى‬ ‫جمع الباحثين الشــباب (تحت سن ‪،)40‬‬ ‫مــن مختلف المختبرات في إيطاليا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫معا‬ ‫وأوروبا والدول األخرى‪ ،‬للمشــاركة‬ ‫في تبادل المعارف والخبرات وإنشــاء‬ ‫تعاونية بين مختلف المؤسســات‬ ‫عالقات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫والمجموعات البحثية‪.‬‬ ‫ويعمــل الدكتور كورادو كالو في مختبر‬ ‫تصوير الخاليا الحية ومســارات الطاقة‬

‫فيهــا (‪Laboratory of Cellular Imaging‬‬ ‫‪ ،)and Energetics‬بقيادة البروفيســور‬ ‫بيير ماجســتريتي‪ ،‬عميد قسم العلوم‬ ‫والهندســة البيولوجية والبيئية في‬ ‫كاوســت‪ .‬وتم ترشيحه للفوز بهذه الجائزة‬ ‫نتيجة كلمته التي شــارك بها في المؤتمر‪،‬‬ ‫التي اســتندت على أبحاثه الحالية حول‬ ‫دور نمــاذج مــن الجليكوجين في تعزيز أو‬ ‫منع اســتقرار التشابكات العصبية‪ ،‬والتي‬ ‫دورا رئيسـ ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ـيا في ذاكرة الدماغ‪.‬‬ ‫تلعب‬ ‫يقــول الدكتور كالي‪ " :‬تناول العمل‬ ‫الذي قدمته دراســة ناقل الالكتات الذي‬ ‫اكتشــفه البروفيسور ماجستريتي قبل‬ ‫بضع ســنوات في اللدونة المشبكية‬ ‫جزء من دراســة‬ ‫البنيوية في الدماغ‪ .‬وكان ً‬

‫مشــتركة قمت بها مع البروفيسور أندريا‬ ‫فالكي مــن جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنيــة والدكتورة إيلينا فيزولي من‬ ‫جامعة ميالنو"‪.‬‬ ‫وأضاف "كانــت الجمعية اإليطالية لتنمية‬ ‫المواهــب (‪ )AISTAP‬من رعاة المؤتمر‪.‬‬ ‫وهــي جمعية تهدف لتطوير مهارات‬ ‫الطلبة الشــباب الموهوبين في جميع‬ ‫المراحــل الجامعية في المجاالت التقنية‬ ‫والعلمية‪ .‬وارتــأت الجمعية مكافئة بحثنا‬ ‫الذي يهدف لدراســة مطاوعة الدماغ‪ ،‬أي‬ ‫التغيــرات في طرق النقل العصبي التي‬ ‫تســمح لنا بالتعلم وتجعلنا أذكياء"‪.‬‬

‫ســبعة أيام في شرم الشيخ في مصر‪،‬‬ ‫شــملت ركوب الخيل عبر مساحات طويلة‬ ‫في الرمال وفي البحر‪ .‬وبهذا‪ ،‬اســتطاعت‬ ‫رانكيــن أن تكمــل رحلتها في منغوليا مع‬ ‫ابنــة أخيها قبل عامين من اآلن‪.‬‬

‫بيــن الحصان والفارس‪ .‬فالخيول ّ‬ ‫تعلم‬ ‫اللطف والصبر والشــعور بالمسؤولية‬ ‫والتعاطــف‪ .‬ال يمكن أن تتعاطى مع‬ ‫الحصان بطريقة ســيئة‪ ،‬ألنه لن ينسى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دوما"‪.‬‬ ‫ذلك وسيتذكره‬

‫أخيرا أصبحت رانكين رئيســة لنادي‬ ‫المملكة للفروســية‪ ،‬حيث تساعد النادي‬ ‫على تنظيم األنشــطة في مزرعة "تريو‬ ‫رانش" بشــكل منتظم‪ .‬ويمكن للجميع‪،‬‬ ‫من األطفــال و البالغين من المبتدئين‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وصوال إلى راكبي الخيول المتمرســين‪،‬‬ ‫االنضمــام إلى صفوف ركوب الخيل أو‬ ‫زيارة المزرعة لمشــاهدة الحيوانات‪.‬‬

‫يشــكل شغف رانكين بركوب الخيل‪،‬‬ ‫وإتاحــة الفرصة لتمكين الناس من‬ ‫التفاعل مع الخيول والفرســان في‬ ‫المزرعة‪ ،‬حافـ ً‬ ‫ـرا لتفانيها للنادي وأعضائه‪.‬‬

‫مغامرات على ظهر‬ ‫الخيل في المملكة‬ ‫وحول العالم‬

‫عند الســاعة السادسة من صباح يوم‬ ‫الســبت تشد أليسون رانكين مديرة‬ ‫االتصاالت في قســم العلوم والهندسة‬ ‫الفيزيائيــة في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت)‪ ،‬سرج‬ ‫المفضل ‪ " -‬الحزم" ‪-‬‬ ‫حصانهــا األصيل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫فــي مزرعة تريو رانش في مدينة جدة‪،‬‬ ‫أثناء مشــاهدة شروق الشمس‪ ،‬ومن ثم‬ ‫القفــز وحصانها فوق الحواجز الموجودة‬ ‫في الساحة هناك‪.‬‬ ‫نشــأت رانكين في مزرعة في ريف‬ ‫مارلبــورو الجميل في نيوزيلندا‪ .‬وفي‬ ‫عيــد ميالدها الرابع‪ ،‬حصلت على هدية‬ ‫يحلــم بها كل طفل‪ ..‬مهرها الخاص‪.‬‬ ‫وســرعان ما أصبح ركوب الخيل شغفها‪.‬‬ ‫واســتمرت أليسون بركوب الخيل بانتظام‬ ‫حتــى منتصف الثالثينيات من عمرها‪،‬‬ ‫ثم انتقلت إلى مدينة كرايستشــيرش‬ ‫للعمل وأصبــح من الصعب ركوبها للخيل‬ ‫بانتظــام ‪ .‬وفي عام ‪ ،2001‬انتقلت إلى‬ ‫الشــرق األوسط واستأنفت الركوب‬

‫في اســطبالت الرياض وبعد ذلك في‬ ‫البحريــن‪ .‬ولكن عندما انتقلت إلى‬ ‫دبي لم يعد ركوب الخيل سـ ً‬ ‫ـهال ألن‬ ‫االســطبالت كانت بعيدة عن المدينة‪.‬‬ ‫وعندمــا بدأت رانكين بالعمل في‬ ‫كاوســت عام ‪ ،2011‬اكتشفت أنها‬ ‫تســتطيع قضاء عطالت نهاية األسبوع‬ ‫فــي ركوب الخيل ورعاية الخيول في‬ ‫مزرعة" تريو رانش"‪.‬‬ ‫وفــي عام ‪ ، 2015‬دعتها إحدى بنات‬ ‫خيرية‬ ‫أخواتهــا للذهاب معها في رحلة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫لعبــور منغوليا وخوض أطول تجربة‬ ‫لركوب الخيل في العالم لمســافة تتجاوز‬ ‫‪ 700‬كيلومتــر على مدى ‪ 10‬أيام‪.‬‬ ‫وفي إطــار التحضير للرحلة‪ ،‬انضمت‬ ‫رانكين الى نادي الفروســية في كاوست‬ ‫لكــي تتمكن من ركوب الخيل في كل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا من‬ ‫عطلة نهاية أســبوع‪ .‬كما تدربت‬ ‫خالل إتمام جولة لســباق الخيل لمدة‬

‫هيأ لنا برنامج ‪KGSP‬‬ ‫مهند الســيف‪ :‬لقد ّ‬ ‫مرحبة وحاضنة للغاية‪ -‬ســواء‬ ‫أجواء‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫من خالل تقديم المشــورة أو من خالل‬ ‫األنشــطة التي يرعاها‪ ،‬كحفالت العشاء‬ ‫خالل زيارات المستشــارين‪ ،‬وأنشطة‬ ‫التعــارف واالندماج وفرص اإلثراء‪.‬‬ ‫ُعــا الماجــد‪ :‬كانت النقلة إلى النظام‬ ‫صعبة في‬ ‫التعليمــي األمريكي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫البداية‪ ،‬واســتغرق األمر بعض الوقت‬ ‫خالل الســنة التحضيرية لنتعلم التكيف‬ ‫مع االختالفات بين أســاليب التدريس‬ ‫الســعودية واألمريكية‪ ،‬وبين الدراسة‬ ‫الكاملة باللغة اإلنجليزية والدراســة‬ ‫ـد جامعتي بيئة أكاديمية‬ ‫بالعربية‪ .‬وتعـ ّ‬ ‫عالية المســتوى ذات تحديات‪ .‬أتخصص‬ ‫في الهندســة الكيميائية‪ ،‬وكان علي‬ ‫أن أتعلــم طرق التعامل مع وتيرتها‬ ‫الســريعة‪ ،‬إذ يتطلب تخصصي الكثير من‬ ‫العمــل اإلضافي لكي أنجح‪ ،‬لكنّ ني‬ ‫أحب التحدى‪ ،‬وأشــعر اآلن براحة في‬ ‫كلية كولورادو للمناجم‪.‬‬

‫مهند الســيف (طالب سنة أخيرة‪ ،‬جامعة‬ ‫والية نورث كاروالينا ‪ ،NCSU‬هندســة‬ ‫كهربائية)‪ :‬لم تكن النقلة من الدراســة‬ ‫في مدرســة ثانوية سعودية إلى جامعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أمريكية أمـ ً‬ ‫جزئيا‬ ‫صعبا‪ ،‬ألنني التحقت‬ ‫ـرا‬ ‫بالســنة اإلعدادية في برنامج ‪KGSP‬؛‬ ‫األمر الذي ســاعدني على االستعداد‬ ‫للحيــاة والثقافة األمريكية‪ ،‬لذلك كنت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مرتاحا عندما بدأت دراســتي الجامعية‬ ‫كطالب جديد‪.‬‬

‫ُعال الماجد (طالبة ســنة تحضيرية في‬ ‫كلية كولورادو للمناجم‪ ،‬هندســة‬ ‫كيميائية)‪ :‬ســاعدني مستشاري في‬ ‫برنامــج رعاية الطلبة الموهوبين خالل‬ ‫عمليــة االنتقال إلى الواليات المتحدة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دائما للرد‬ ‫مستعدا‬ ‫بشــكل كبير‪ ،‬وكان‬ ‫على جميع أســئلتي‪ .‬كما كانت السنة‬ ‫مفيدة‬ ‫اإلعداديــة من برنامج ‪KGSP‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا في إرشــادي خالل عملية القبول‬ ‫واالنتقــال إلى كلية كولورادو للمناجم‪.‬‬

‫ّ‬ ‫تمكنت في جامعة‬ ‫مهند الســيف‪:‬‬ ‫نــورث كاروالينا من مقابلة العديد من‬ ‫الطلبة األمريكيين والدوليين‪ ،‬وأشــعر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا مع حياة‬ ‫جيدا‬ ‫ـكل‬ ‫أنني تأقلمت بشـ ٍ‬ ‫الكليــة اآلن‪ .‬أقضي الكثير من الوقت‬ ‫في النشــاطات المختلفة‪ ،‬مثل نادي‬ ‫الروبوت‪ ،‬ورابطة الطلبة الســعوديين‪،‬‬ ‫وشــبكة التبادل الثقافي‪ .‬كما أستمتع‬ ‫بحياتي األكاديمية وبدراســتي مع‬ ‫زمالئي في الهندســة الكهربائية ‪.‬‬ ‫أفضل أن أعيش حياة نشــطة مع‬ ‫فأنا ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فعاليــات تمأل وقتي كامال‪ ،‬بدال من‬ ‫إهداره على التلفزيون والفيســبوك‪.‬‬ ‫دراســتي هنا فرصة أنوي أن أستثمرها‬ ‫بأقصى شكل ممكن!‬

‫الحياة في الواليات‬ ‫المتحدة كطلبة في‬ ‫برنامج كاوست للطلبة‬ ‫الموهوبين‬

‫منــذ إطالقه في العام ‪ ،2008‬عمل‬ ‫برنامــج جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية (كاوســت) للطلبة الموهوبين‬ ‫‪ ،KGSP‬علــى تقديم التوجيه لخريجي‬ ‫المدارس الثانوية الســعودية الموهوبين‪،‬‬ ‫وإتاحــة الفرص الداعمة لنجاحهم‬ ‫كطلبة جامعيين يتابعون دراســتهم‬ ‫في الجامعات والمؤسســات العلمية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ويتطلع برنامج ‪KGSP‬‬ ‫األمريكيــة الرائدة‪.‬‬ ‫إلى المهارات والرؤى التي يكتســبها‬ ‫الطلبة المشــاركون في الواليات‬ ‫المتحدة‪ ،‬بهدف تهيئتهم لدراســة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الحقا في‬ ‫الماجســتير والدكتوراة‬ ‫كاوســت‪ .‬األمر الذي من شأنه أن يثري‬ ‫النســيج الثقافي والفكري للجامعة‬ ‫حد ســواء‪.‬‬ ‫وللمملكة على ّ‬

‫وعلــق جهاد الجحدلي‪ ،‬تلميذ الصف‬ ‫الثاني عشــر من ثول‪ ،‬عن مشاركته‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قائـ ً‬ ‫مثيرا‬ ‫رائعا‪ .‬كان األمر‬ ‫ـا‪" :‬كان األمر‬ ‫لإلهتمــام أن أعرف أكثر عن أنواع المياه‬ ‫والمشــاركة في التجارب على األصداف‬ ‫وكيفية تأثرها باألحماض‪ .‬كما درســنا‬ ‫العالقات بين الشــعاب المرجانية‬ ‫واألســماك‪ ،‬ومراحل النمو ومتوسط‬ ‫العمــر المتوقع‪ .‬وكانت هذه هي المرة‬ ‫األولى التي اســتخدم فيها المجهر!"‪.‬‬

‫برنامج تطويــر المتعلمين الصغار جميع‬ ‫المحاضرات الرئيســية‪ ،‬مع جلسات تعقد‬ ‫عقــب المحاضرات‪ ،‬تحاوروا خاللها‬ ‫مع طلبــة الجامعة الناطقين بالعربية‬ ‫لتمكينهــم من المعلومات المطروحة‬ ‫وتأكيــد فهمهم لها‪ .‬وبادر مركز أبحاث‬ ‫البحر األحمر إلى إشــراك تالميذ ثول‬ ‫في العديد من األنشــطة الجامعية‬ ‫األخــري التي يقوم بها المركز‪ ،‬كرحلة‬ ‫علــى القارب "آرفي ثول"‪ ،‬وزيارات‬ ‫إلــى ما وراء الكواليس في أكواريوم‬ ‫جدة ومناقشــة أبرز ما يعرضه‪ ،‬وزيارات‬ ‫بحثية إلى ســوق السمك‪ .‬وبعد تحديد‬ ‫المشــاريع البحثية‪ ،‬انقسم التالميذ االثنا‬ ‫عشــر إلى ثالث مجموعات بحثية‪ ،‬تحت‬ ‫إشــراف كل من طالبة الدكتوراة رويال‬

‫ً‬ ‫أيضا المعلومات‪ .‬وكان من‬ ‫حفظوا‬ ‫الجميل أن نشعر باهتمامهم المتزايد‪ ،‬وأن‬ ‫أن البرنامج‬ ‫نلمس فضولهم العلمي‪ .‬أرى ّ‬ ‫مبادرة رائعة‪ .‬فكاوست تمتلك الموارد‬ ‫الالزمة في العلوم البحرية‪ ،‬والنتائج التي‬ ‫حققناها أكبر بكثير مما توقعنا"‪.‬‬

‫هاردنشــتاين‪ ،‬وطالبة الماجستير جورجينا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن ماثيو تيتبوهل‪،‬‬ ‫شــورت‪،‬‬ ‫لتوجيههم في مشــاريعهم المختارة‪.‬‬

‫من جهته‪ ،‬أبدى ماثيو تيتبوهل‪ ،‬طالب‬ ‫الدكتوراة في العلوم البحرية في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قائال‪:‬‬ ‫كاوست‪ ،‬إعجابه بتالميذ ثول‪،‬‬ ‫"كانت أسئلتهم رائعة‪ .‬لم يكتفي‬ ‫التالميذ بالتفاعل مع الورشات‪ ،‬بل‬

‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫نوعيا‪،‬‬ ‫نجاحا‬ ‫حققت المدرســة الصيفية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫طالبا من الصف الحادي‬ ‫إذ حضــر ‪12‬‬ ‫عشــر والثاني عشر برنامج تطوير‬ ‫المتعلمين الصغار‪ ،‬الذي اســتمر ثالثة‬ ‫أســابيع‪ ،‬والذي ترافق مع البرنامج‬ ‫الصيفي الســنوي لمركز أبحاث البحر‬ ‫األحمر للطلبــة الجامعيين‪ .‬وحضر تالميذ‬

‫ثم قــدم تالميذ ثول مقترحات أبحاثهم‬ ‫في ورشــة عمل أقامها مركز أبحاث‬ ‫البحر األحمر بعنوان‪" :‬مســتقبل التنوع‬ ‫البيولوجــي في البحر األحمر" خالل‬ ‫برنامــج اإلثراء في الخريف‪ .‬ويجري‬ ‫ـتعدون‬ ‫التالميذ اآلن بحوثهم بتعمق ويسـ ّ‬ ‫لتقديــم نتائجها في ربيع العام ‪.2019‬‬ ‫يقدمون بحوثهم ليس فقط‬ ‫وســوف ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا إلى‬ ‫إلى حضور كاوســت‪ ،‬ولكن‬ ‫المعنية التي ستســتفيد‬ ‫الجهات المحلية‬ ‫ّ‬

‫من إســتنتاجاتهم‪ ،‬بما فيهم مجتمعات‬ ‫الصيــد ومديري البيئة في ثول‪.‬‬ ‫يأتــي إعداد وتأهيل تالميذ ثول‬ ‫للمشــاركة في المدرسة الصيفية‪،‬‬ ‫كثمرة لعامين من االســتثمار في برامج‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫التوعيــة العلمية والعمل مع أعضاء‬ ‫هيئة التدريس وطلبة الدراســات العليا‪،‬‬ ‫لتطوير وتنفيذ برنامج "ســتيم" (العلوم‬ ‫والتكنولوجيا والهندســة والرياضيات)‬ ‫في أنشــطة المملكة‪ .‬وتهدف هذه‬ ‫البرامج إلى تحقيق منافع مســتدامة‬ ‫وطويلــة األجل في المجتمعات‬ ‫والمناطق المجاورة للجامعة‪ ،‬وستســاعد‬ ‫على تحديد وإلهــام التالميذ المحتملين‬ ‫المرشــحين للمشاركة في برنامج‬

‫مشاركة المعلم‬ ‫والمعرفة مع‬ ‫مجتمعنا‬ ‫ال تتمحور جهود طلبة الماجســتير‬ ‫والدكتــوراة في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دوما حول‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت)‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التعلــم‪ ،‬بل يتطلب منهم في بعض‬ ‫األحيان أن يكونوا أســاتذة ومدرسين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‪ .‬وكجزء من النســخة األولى لعام‬ ‫‪ 2018‬من برنامج الجامعة المســتمر‬ ‫لتطوير المتعلمين الشــباب (‪،)YLDP‬‬ ‫والموجــه لطلبة وتالميذ المرحلة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المتوســطة والثانوية في المناطق‬ ‫المجاورة‪ ،‬بادر قســم المسؤولية‬ ‫المجتمعية في كاوســت‪ ،‬إلى التنسيق‬ ‫مــع مركز أبحاث البحر األحمر‪ ،‬ومركز‬ ‫الحوســبة المرئية‪ ،‬ومختبر الموارد‬ ‫الســاحلية والبحرية‪ ،‬إلقامة سلسلة‬ ‫تضمنت‬ ‫فعاليــات التوعية العلمية‪،‬‬ ‫من ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫سلســلة دورات مدرسية صيفية مكثفة‪.‬‬ ‫وعمل طلبة كاوســت على إعداد وتقديم‬ ‫ورش عمــل متنوعة‪ ،‬أتاحت لهم فرصة‬ ‫مشــاركة ما لديهم من مهارات ومعرفة‬ ‫وحماســة لالكتشاف‪ ،‬مع التالميذ‬ ‫المشــاركون من المدارس المحلية في‬ ‫بلدتــي ثول والقضيمة المجاورتين‪.‬‬ ‫وعقد طلبة الدراسات العليا والباحثون‬ ‫وزمالء ما بعد الدكتوراة حلقات عمل‪،‬‬ ‫تناولت مواضيع في علوم البيئة البحرية‬ ‫وعرفوا تالميذ‬ ‫وعلوم المحيطات‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫المدارس المتوسطة والثانوية المشاركين‬ ‫على تقنيات البحث والمعدات‬ ‫المستخدمة في البيئة البحرية‪ .‬كما‬ ‫ساعدوا في أنشطة عملية للتالميذ‪ ،‬أجروا‬ ‫فيها التجارب واستخالص النتائج‪.‬‬

‫ويقــول غانــم‪ " :‬علينا أن نبدأ بالســؤال عن النتيجة المرجوة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫معقدا‬ ‫من هذه البرمجة؟ و يمكن أن يكون هذا الســؤال‬ ‫للغايــة ويصعب اإلجابة عليه"‪.‬‬

‫اآلن‪ ،‬حول لزوم فرض اختبار قيادة ميداني للســيارات‬ ‫الذاتية‪ .‬ويعتبر أنه وفريقه على اســتعداد تام لتقديم‬ ‫العــون في هذا الموضوع‪.‬‬

‫على الرغم من كون التعليم اآللي مســتوحى من قدرة‬ ‫الدمــاغ علــى أداء المهــام المعقدة ‪ ،‬إال أن غانم ال يعتقد‬ ‫أن آليــة وطريقــة عمل الدماغ هي الطريقة الوحيدة – أو‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫للتعلم اآللي‪ .‬إذ يقول غانم أنه"صحيح أن‬ ‫األكثــر فعاليــة –‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫التعلم‬ ‫مثاال ألحد النمــاذج الناجحة التي يريد‬ ‫يعد‬ ‫الدمــاغ ّ‬ ‫اآللــي تقليدها‪ ،‬ولكــن يمكننا الوصول إلى قمة الجبل‬ ‫مــن خالل طرق عــدة‪ ،‬فالمهم هو الوصول إلى القمة"‪.‬‬

‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كامال في تطوير خوارزميات‬ ‫عاما‬ ‫ولقــد أمضى الفريــق‬ ‫المالحة اآللية الذكية‪ ،‬مســتندين على المحاكاة‬ ‫المســتخدمة في الســيارات ذاتية القيادة على سبيل‬ ‫المثــال‪ ،‬التي ّ‬ ‫تعلم المركبــة أن تتفاعل كما ينبغي عند‬ ‫مواقف خطرة أو غير عادية‪ ،‬قبل أن يتم اســتخدامها‪ .‬وتم‬ ‫تطويــر بعض هذا العمــل بالتعاون مع معامل إنتل في‬ ‫ألمانيــا‪ .‬كما تم اختبــاره على الطرق القريبة من مركز‬ ‫أبحاث الشــركة في ميونيخ‪ ،‬وتم اختبار نفس الســيارة‬ ‫المتحكم بها عن بعد على طرق كاوســت‪.‬‬

‫ً‬ ‫اهتماما من ناحية‬ ‫شــهد مجال الســيارات الذاتية القيادة‬ ‫االســتثمار واالهتمام واالبتكار التكنولوجي‪ ،‬منذ أن‬ ‫بدأت غوغل وشــركات أخرى في تحقيق قفزات هائلة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حادثا نتج عنه حالة موت في‬ ‫فــي هذا المجــال‪ .‬ولكن‬ ‫والية أريزونا شــمل ســيارة اوبر ذاتية القيادة جلب قضية‬ ‫الســامة إلى الصدارة‪ .‬وأوضح غانم أن هناك تســاؤل‬

‫وال تعتبر الســيارات وســيلة النقل الوحيدة التي ُيعمل‬ ‫على تطويرها‪ .‬حيث يتعاون غانم وزميله ســيلفيو‬ ‫جيانكوال مع شــركة بوينــغ‪ ،‬لتطوير خوارزميات التعليم‬ ‫اآللي للطائرات‪ ،‬التي من شــأنها أن تســمح لها بالهبوط‬ ‫والســير على مدرج المطار دون تدخل قائدها‪.‬‬

‫ما وراء القيادة الذاتية‪:‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التعلم‬ ‫تمكين اآلالت من‬ ‫إن خوارزميات تعليم اآللة تســمح للســيارات أن تستغني‬ ‫عن الســائقين البشــريين في المستقبل القريب‪ ،‬و لكن هذا‬ ‫الموضوع يطرح العديد من األســئلة حول حدود معرفتنا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التعلم‪.‬‬ ‫عــن الدماغ و كيفية‬ ‫قام برنارد غانم‪ ،‬البروفيســور في الهندســة الكهربائية في‬ ‫مركز الحوســبة المرئية فــي جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية (كاوســت)‪ ،‬والباحث الرئيســي في مختبر إدراك‬ ‫الصــور والفيديو (‪Image and Video Understanding‬‬ ‫‪ ، ))Lab (IVUL‬بتطبيــق تقنيــات ّ‬ ‫تعلــم اآللة على الكمبيوتر‬ ‫وذلك لتمكينه من المالحة اآللية‪ ،‬مثل الســيارات ذاتية‬ ‫القيــادة والطائــرات ذاتية الطيران بدون طيار‪ ،‬ومحركات‬ ‫التعرف ومواضيع أخرى‪.‬‬ ‫البحــث ومحركات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يشرح غانم‪" :‬تقوم ادمغتنا بمهام معقدة مثل التحرك‬ ‫والتعرف على األشياء باستهالك منخفض للطاقة‪ ،‬ونحن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أبحاثا لفهم كيفية وضع هذه الوظيفة في اآللة‪،‬‬ ‫نجري‬ ‫ومن المثير أننا نسعى لتقليد نظام موجود بداخلنا‪ ،‬مما‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فعال كيف تعمل أدمغتنا"‪.‬‬ ‫يعني أننا في الحقيقة ال نفهم‬

‫اإلنسان واآللة‬ ‫ويقول غانم‪ " :‬اإلبداع هو نوع ذكاء محدد يميزنا كبشــر‪،‬‬ ‫ذكاء‬ ‫تكون‬ ‫لــذا فــإن أي خوارزمية إبداعية‪ ،‬يمكن أن ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حقيقيا‪ ،‬بمتلك القدرة على اإلبداع‪ .‬ويســتطيع‬ ‫اصطناعيـ ًـا‬ ‫البشــر االنتقال من مهمة إلى أخرى وتطوير معرفتهم‬ ‫دون التــدرب على ذلــك‪ .‬هذا هو االبداع بعينه‪ :‬امكانية‬

‫ّ‬ ‫تعلم شــيء دون أن تدرســه‪ ،‬وهذا ما نحاول الوصول‬ ‫اليــه فــي ّ‬ ‫تعلم اآللة و لكننــا لم نصل لهذه المرحلة حتى‬ ‫اآلن"‪.‬‬ ‫إن تطوير خوارزميات التعليم اآللي مع اســتحداث قدرة‬ ‫اآللــة على اإلبداع ‪ ،‬يحتّ ــم على الباحثين ً‬ ‫أوال أن يفهموا‬ ‫آليــة نقل المعرفــة عند االنتقال من مهمة إلى ما‬ ‫يليهــا‪ .‬وهناك مجموعــة متنوعة من التحديات التي يجب‬ ‫التغلــب عليهــا ‪ ،‬لكن غانــم يفترض أنه ربما يحتاج الباحثون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أوال إلى تحديد ما هو أساســي‪ -،‬هل التقنية الصحيحة‬ ‫تقــوم على التعليــم العميق؟ ما هو نوع التعليم الذي‬ ‫تتطلبــه هذه المهارة؟ ولو افترضنا أن الشــبكات العصبية‬ ‫المعقــدة هــي الطريقة األمثل ‪ ،‬فكيــف يمكننا تعليم نقل‬ ‫المعلومــات في الواقع ؟‬ ‫علــى الرغم مــن أن الخوارزميات بدأت بالتفوق على‬ ‫البشــر‪ ،‬إال أن التعليم اآللي ال يزال يتم تحت إشــراف‬ ‫اإلنســان‪ .‬حيث أن اختيار النتيجة المطلوبة هو جانب هام‬ ‫في برمجة الخوارزميات‪.‬‬

‫(‪ )CPU‬ورقائــق الذاكرة ‪ ،‬والكيلومترات من كابالت‬ ‫الشــبكات وآالف أقراص التخزين ومئات التطبيقات‬ ‫والمكتبات‪ .‬ويعتبر شــاهين الموجود في المختبر‬ ‫واحدا من أكبر‬ ‫الرئيســي للحوســبة الفائقة في كاوست‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أنظمــة وحدة المعالجــة المركزية في العالم‪ ،‬بإجمالي‬ ‫‪ 12,348‬وحــدة معالجــة من نوع ‪ ،Intel Haswell‬وحجم‬ ‫ذاكرة يبلغ ‪ 790‬تيرابايت‪ ،‬ومســاحة تخزين بحجم ‪17,6‬‬ ‫حاليا أكبر حاســوب خارق في الشــرق‬ ‫بيتابايت‪ .‬وهو‬ ‫ً‬ ‫األوسط‪.‬‬ ‫وتتطلــب بعض المشــاريع البحثية العمالقة‪ ،‬مثل تلك التي‬ ‫يجريهــا فريق أرامكــو‪ ،‬ما يزيد عن ‪ 54000‬عملية محاكاة‬ ‫باســتخدام أكثر من ‪ 100,000‬نواة معالجة‪ ،‬أو ما يقارب‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أحيانا‬ ‫نصف الطاقة اإلجمالية لشــاهين‪ ،‬وذلك يســتدعي‬ ‫إجراء تعديل وتحســين دقيق للنظام بأكمله‪.‬‬

‫خبرات مختبر الحوســبة الفائقة (‪)KSL‬‬ ‫أحد العناصر األساســية لنجاح مثل هذه العمليات‬ ‫الحاســوبية المعقدة‪ ،‬هــو جاهزية المكونات المختلفة‬ ‫للنظام‪ ،‬وعدم وجود أي خلل من شــأنه تعريض العملية‬ ‫للفشــل‪ .‬ولهذا‪ ،‬يعمل الدكتور ماتشــي أولتشوفيك‪،‬‬ ‫رئيــس فريــق إدارة األنظمة‪ ،‬والدكتور بالل هدري‪ ،‬عالم‬ ‫الحوســبة في مختبر الحوســبة الفائقة في كاوست‪،‬‬ ‫على فحص مدى صحة جميع مكونات شــاهين باســتخدام‬ ‫حزمة برمجيات من تطويرهم الخاص قبل أن يســتخدمه‬ ‫علماء أرامكو‪.‬‬ ‫كما يســاهم علماء مختبر الحوســبة الفائقة في تحسين‬ ‫عمليــات المحــاكاة‪ ،‬بحيث يتمكن علماء أرامكو من‬ ‫تنوعا‪.‬‬ ‫الحصول على نتائج أكثر دقة وســيناريوهات أكثر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ويقول عالم الحوســبة‪ ،‬صاموئيل كورتاس ‪ ":‬تكمن‬

‫مهمتي في مســاعدة العلماء على اســتخدام مواردنا‬ ‫بفاعليــة مطلقة‪ ،‬ولهذا قمت بتطوير برنامج داســيمايت‬ ‫(‪ )Decimate‬الذي يبســط للمستخدمين النهائيين‬ ‫العديد من األشــياء المعقدة في النظام قدر اإلمكان"‪.‬‬ ‫وباســتخدام برنامج (‪ ،)Decimate‬تمكن علماء شركة‬ ‫أرامكو من اختبار جميع التشــكيالت الممكنة ألنماط‬ ‫ذاكرة التخزين المؤقت‪ ،‬ثم اســتخدام النمط األمثل‬ ‫لتشــغيل عملية المحاكاة النهائية‪.‬‬

‫محاكــة "الترليون خلية"‬ ‫هذا هو اإلنجاز القياســي العالمي الثالث الذي يحققه‬ ‫الحاســوب الخارق شــاهين‪ ،‬نتيجة التعاون المثمر بين‬ ‫أرامكو الســعودية والمختبر الرئيســي للحوسبة الفائقة‬ ‫في كاوســت‪ .‬حيث ســبق أن تعاون الفريقان في‬ ‫مشــروعين بحثيين إلجــراء أكبر محاكاة معقدة لمكامن‬ ‫النفــط والغاز‪ ،‬تعــرف بمحاكة "الترليون خلية" ومحاكاة‬ ‫تدفق الســوائل‪ ،‬التي تعتبر األكبر على مســتوى الهندسة‪.‬‬ ‫ومن جهته‪ ،‬يقول الدكتور جاســتن ماينار‪ ،‬نائب الرئيس‬ ‫المشــارك لألبحاث والمدير التنفيذي للمختبرات الرئيســية‬ ‫في الجامعة‪ ":‬تضم المختبرات الرئيســية في كاوســت‬ ‫تجهيزات ومرافق متطورة وعالمية المســتوى مثل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وطنيا يمكن‬ ‫موردا‬ ‫الحاســوب الخارق شــاهين‪ ،‬الذي يعتبر‬ ‫االســتفادة منه لتلبية احتياجات المؤسســات في جميع‬ ‫أنحاء المملكة"‪.‬‬ ‫بقلم فريق المختبر الرئيســي للحوســبة الفائقة‪،‬‬ ‫ونيكــوالس ديميــل‪ ،‬من فريق أخبار الجامعة‪ ،‬وأندريا‬ ‫هولســبوش‪ ،‬من فريق المختبرات األساسية‪.‬‬

‫ســعى العلماء منذ عدة عقود لرســم خريطة التكوينات الجيولوجية‬ ‫لشــبه الجزيــرة العربية والبحــار المحيطة بها‪ ،‬بهدف تحديد مواردها‬ ‫الكامنة والعمل على اســتخراجها‪ .‬ولكنهــا مهمة بالغة التعقيد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫نظرا لعظم مســاحة شــبه الجزيرة العربية‪ ،‬التي تعتبر أكبر شــبه جزيرة‬ ‫علــى وجه األرض بمســاحة تتجــاوز ‪ 3.2‬مليون كيلومتر مربع‪ .‬إال أننا‬ ‫اليــوم‪ ،‬أصبحنــا على مقربة من تحقيق ذلــك‪ ،‬بفضل النتائج المتفوقة‬ ‫لعمليات المحاكاة القياســية‪ ،‬التي أنجزها الحاســوب الخارق شاهين‬ ‫التابــع لجامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت) والذي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يعتبر من أســرع ‪ 30‬حاسـ ً‬ ‫خارقا في العالم‪.‬‬ ‫ـوبا‬ ‫وقد اســتكمل شــاهين مجموعة من عمليات المحاكاة الرقمية‬ ‫للتخطيــط والتوصيف فائق الوضوح لباطن األرض‪ ،‬والخاصة بقســم‬ ‫تقنيــة الجيوفيزياء في مركز إكســبك (‪ )EXPEC‬لألبحاث المتقدمة‬ ‫التابع لشــركة أرامكو الســعودية‪ .‬وتمكن علماء المركز‪ ،‬وألول مرة‪،‬‬ ‫مــن انتــاج صورة ثالثية األبعاد للطبقــات الجيولوجية في المنطقة‬ ‫بدقــة حتــى عمق ‪ 7,5‬متر‪ ،‬يمكن مــن خاللها تحديد مالمح الطبقات‬ ‫في باطن األرض‪.‬‬ ‫يقول الدكتور علي المشــاري‪ ،‬مدير مركز إكســبك لألبحاث‬ ‫تخطيط‬ ‫المتقدمــة التابع ألرامكو الســعودية‪" :‬إتمام عملية‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫وتوصيف فائق الوضوح والدقة لباطن األرض وعلى مســتوى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫إنجازا رئيسـ ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فارقا فــي عملية التنقيب عن النفط‪،‬‬ ‫ـيا‬ ‫اإلنتــاج‪ ،‬يعد‬ ‫وخطــوة رائدة نحو االندماج الســلس للنماذج الجيوفيزيائية‬ ‫والجيولوجية والهندسية"‪.‬‬

‫مرافــق الجامعة وبرامج أرامكو‬ ‫اسـ�تخدم علماء أرامكو برنامج( (�‪Ge‬‬ ‫‪ )oDRIVE‬إلنتــاج صورة ثالثية األبعاد‬ ‫للطبقات الجيولوجية تحت ســطح األرض‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مترا مقارنة‬ ‫بدقة قياســية على عمق ‪7,5‬‬ ‫بمقيــاس اإلنتاجية‪ ،‬متفوقة على عمليات‬ ‫المحاكاة السابقة‪.‬‬ ‫وقال المهندس علي مؤمن‪ ،‬مدير مشروع‬ ‫(‪" :)GeoDRIVE‬إن التكلفة الحسابية‬ ‫الواسعة للمحاكاة السيزمية الدقيقة‪،‬‬ ‫خلقت فجوة بين التقدم النظري في‬ ‫العالم األكاديمي والتطبيقات الصناعية‬ ‫العملية‪ .‬وال شك أن هذا اإلنجاز يقدم‬ ‫لنا فرصة فريدة لتطوير حلول مبتكرة‪،‬‬ ‫يمكنها أن تلبي احتياجاتنا الحالية‬ ‫باإلضافة إلى االحتياجات المستقبلية‬ ‫للباحثين والمتخصصين"‪.‬‬

‫ضخم وسيظل مشكلة كبيرة‪ ،‬بل أكبر مع‬ ‫تزايد عدد السكان‪".‬‬ ‫تعد شركة مزارع البحر األحمر التي أسسها‬ ‫مارك تستر‪ ،‬أستاذ علوم النبات في قسم‬ ‫العلوم والهندسة البيولوجية والبيئية‬ ‫(‪ )BESE‬مع زمالئه في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬أول عميل لشركة‬ ‫"آيرس" الناشئة‪.‬‬ ‫والغرض من هذا التعاون هو استفادة‬ ‫الشركة‪ ،‬المعنية باألعمال التجارية الزراعية‬ ‫المبنية على األبحاث العلمية‪ ،‬من نوافذ‬ ‫"آيرس" لخلق بيئة أفضل لنمو النباتات‬ ‫وزيادة غلة المحاصيل‪.‬‬

‫ويقول مكولوك‪" :‬النموذج األولي مثير‬ ‫حقا وهو تحت مظلة جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬حيث أتيحت الفرصة للقاء‬ ‫فكرتين من مجالين مختلفين لبناء وعرض‬ ‫جدا إلمكانيات كلتا التقنيتين‪".‬‬ ‫مثال ً‬ ‫رائعا ً‬ ‫ويضيــف‪" :‬توفر جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنية بيئة يســتطيع الباحثين من‬ ‫معا ومقابلة ومناقشــة‬ ‫خاللها االجتماع ً‬ ‫أيضا على‬ ‫التقنيــات المختلفة والحصول ً‬ ‫دعم مــن الجامعة لتحقيق ذلك‪ .‬في‬ ‫كثير من األحيان‪ ،‬تفشــل األفكار ألنها ال‬ ‫تملك الدافع األولــي للتغلب على العقبة‬ ‫األولــى‪ ،‬وبمجرد تخطيها‪ ،‬يصبح األمر‬

‫شركة "آيرس" الناشئة‬ ‫تطور تقنيات لتحويل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫النوافذ إلى ألواح شمسية‬ ‫تتطلب مدن المستقبل إنشاء مباني ذكية‬ ‫منخفضة الطاقة‪ .‬فبحلول عام ‪ ،2025‬من‬ ‫المتوقع أن يسكن ‪ 68‬بالمائة من سكان‬ ‫العالم في المدن وذلك وفقا لتقرير أصدرته‬ ‫األمم المتحدة عام‪ 2018‬عن توقعات‬ ‫التطور الحضري‪ .‬وبالتالي‪ ،‬يتحتم النظر في‬ ‫مصادر بديلة للطاقة عند إطالق مشاريع‬ ‫متعلقة بالمدن في المستقبل‪.‬‬ ‫تقول ديريا باران‪ ،‬أستاذ مساعد في هندسة‬ ‫وعلوم المواد في قسم العلوم والهندسة‬ ‫الفيزيائية (‪ )PSE‬وعضو في مركز الطاقة‬ ‫الشمسية‪" :‬في مدن المستقبل‪ ،‬أعتقد أن‬ ‫كل مبنى سيقوم بإنتاج طاقته الخاصة‪ .‬كل‬ ‫شيء سيعتمد على الطاقة المتجددة‪ .‬ال‬ ‫يوجد سبيل آخر‪ .‬أنا ال أقول إن النفط سوف‬ ‫يزول‪ ،‬لكنني أعتقد أننا سنستخدمه بأساليب‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وقودا فقط‪".‬‬ ‫أكثر قيمة من كونه‬ ‫متعددة‬ ‫يدير مركز الطاقة الشمسية مشاريع‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫صناعيا لتسويق األبحاث‪ .‬فقد طورت باران‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وفريقها تقنية فلطائية ضوئية تسمح ألي‬ ‫نافذة أن تكون بمثابة ألواح شمسية لتوليد‬ ‫الطاقة وأن تحافظ على شفافيتها في‬ ‫الوقت ذاته‪.‬‬ ‫تقوم الشركة الناشئة "آيرس" التي أسستها‬ ‫باران مع فريقها والحائزة على منحة‬ ‫"تقدم" لمساندة المشاريع الناشئة بتطوير‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الخاليا الكهروضوئية وبناء تطبيقات داخلية‬ ‫وواجهات مباني ونوافذ للمباني والدفيئات‬ ‫الزراعية مع المحافظة على الشفافية‬ ‫للضوء المرئي‪ ،‬والحفاظ على النواحي‬ ‫الجمالية للبناء‪ .‬وتساعد هذه التقنية على‬ ‫تقليل استهالك الكهرباء في المباني بنسبة‬ ‫تصل إلى ‪ 25٪‬أثناء توليد الطاقة‪ ،‬باإلضافة‬

‫إلى خصائص إضافية المتصاص األشعة‬ ‫تحت الحمراء إلدارة الحرارة‪.‬‬ ‫يقول إيان مكوليك‪ ،‬مدير مركز الطاقة‬ ‫الشمسية وأستاذ العلوم الكيميائية في‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪" :‬يعد‬ ‫مجال تقنية الطاقة الشمسية الشفافة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وسوقا كبيرة للغاية"‪ .‬وأضاف‪:‬‬ ‫مثيرا للغاية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫"التقنية التي طورتها ديريا وفريقها مع‬ ‫تصنيع منخفض التكلفة يمكن أن يكون لها‬ ‫تأثير كبير"‪.‬‬ ‫ُيستهلك أكثر من ‪ ٪70‬من الكهرباء المحلية‬ ‫في المملكة في التبريد وتكييف الهواء‪،‬‬

‫وفقا لورقة بحثية نشرت في عام ‪.2017‬‬ ‫وفي الوقت الراهن‪ ،‬يعتمد إنتاج الكهرباء‬ ‫بشكل كبير على حرق الوقود األحفوري‬ ‫الذي ليس فقط ذي تكلفة باهظة‪ ،‬ولكن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫نظرا لالنبعاثات التي يطلقها‬ ‫يضر بالبيئة‬ ‫وتماشيا‬ ‫والتي تزيد من تلوث الهواء‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مع أهداف الرؤية السعودية ‪ ،2030‬من‬ ‫المتوقع أن يتم التخفيف من االعتماد على‬ ‫الوقود األحفوري إلنتاج الكهرباء مع ظهور‬ ‫مصادر الطاقة المستدامة لتلبية الحاجة‪.‬‬ ‫تضيف باران‪" :‬أعتقد حقا أن هذا هو‬ ‫مستقبل المدن الجديدة‪ .‬نحن نعلم أن‬ ‫االحتياج للتبريد خاصة في هذه المنطقة‬

‫التعمــق والغوص في العلم‬

‫ما بعد أشــجار القرم‬

‫تعد نباتات القرم أشــجار أو شجيرات‬ ‫صغيرة‪ ،‬تكيفــت للبقاء على قيد الحياة‬ ‫في المياه الســاحلية والمياه المالحة‪،‬‬ ‫عادة في المناطق االســتوائية‬ ‫وتتواجد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وشــبه االستوائية‪ ،‬بما في ذلك في‬ ‫المملكــة‪ .‬وتتضمن غابات القرم في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أشجارا أكبر تُ سمى النباتات‬ ‫كاوســت‬ ‫الهامشــية‪ ،‬تنمو على طول الحافة‬ ‫الســاحلية للبحر‪ .‬وتتعرض هذه األشجار‬ ‫مباشــرة إلى المد والجزر واألمواج‬ ‫وعــادة ما تغمرها مياه البحر طوال‬ ‫العــام‪ .‬ويالحظ مع االقتراب من الخط‬ ‫الســاحلي كثرة األشجار القزمة‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫غالبـ ًـا مــا تتأثر بحركة المد والجزر‪ ،‬وتعيش‬ ‫في بيئة أكثر قســاوة وملوحة وأكثر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قحال في الصيف‪.‬‬

‫فــي رحلة أخرى‪ ،‬عملت مجموعة من‬ ‫الصف العاشــر مع مجموعة مختلفة من‬ ‫الباحثيــن في مركز البحر األحمر لألبحاث‬ ‫"‪ ، "RSRC‬تضمنــت مات تايتبول وروبن‬ ‫مارتن دي موســتا ونورا زهران‪ ،‬من‬ ‫وحــدة متعددة التخصصات بين العلوم‬ ‫واللغة اإلنجليزية "‪."IDU‬‬

‫يتمتع مركز البحر األحمر لألبحاث بتاريخ‬ ‫في العمل مع مدرسة كاوست‪ ،‬إذ يهدف‬ ‫هذا التعاون إلى إدخال أبحاث علوم‬ ‫األحياء البحرية إلى الفصل الدراسي في‬ ‫المدرسة‪ .‬وباإلضافة إلى رحالت الغوص‬ ‫وأشجار القرم‪ ،‬يقدم الباحثون في المركز‬ ‫محاضرات حول التلوث البالستيكي‪ ،‬وبيئة‬ ‫األسماك‪ ،‬أثار الصيد المستدام‪ ،‬باإلضافة‬ ‫إلى مواضيع أخرى‪.‬‬

‫ومن جهته يقول ماركو فوســي‪:‬‬ ‫"اســتطاع الطلبة مالحظة تغير‬ ‫حجم النبات ومجموعات ســلطعون‬ ‫البحــر عند االنتقال بين النباتات‬ ‫الهامشــية الساحلية واألشجار‬ ‫القزمــة‪ .‬وقام الطلبة بقياس محيط‬ ‫النباتات وارتفاعها‪ ،‬وتســجيل أعداد‬ ‫وأنواع الســلطعون التي تعيش في‬ ‫هــذه المنطقة‪ .‬كما أحضرنا أجهزة‬ ‫لقياس األكســجين والحموضة (‪)pH‬‬ ‫وإمكانية األكســدة (حاالت األكسدة‬ ‫‪ /‬األكســجينية) في أماكن تواجد‬ ‫السلطعونات الحية"‪.‬‬

‫ّ‬ ‫ركز الطلبة خالل الرحلة على مشكلة‬ ‫ابيضاض المرجان‪ ،‬وأجروا مجموعة‬ ‫متنوعة من التجارب على مدى عدة‬ ‫أيام في الجامعة‪ ،‬أبرزها تجربة العمل‬ ‫كباحثين أكاديميين‪ .‬كما وثق الطلبة‬ ‫تجربتهم في فيلم وثائقي‪ ،‬عرضوا خالله‬ ‫أفكارهم للحفاظ على التنوع البيولوجي‬ ‫باستخدام لغة مقنعة وعاطفية‪.‬‬ ‫وفــي رحلة بحرية أخرى‪ ،‬خرج طلبة‬ ‫الصف الثاني عشــر – قسم علم األحياء‬ ‫برفقــة مات تايتبول‪ ،‬طالب دكتوراة في‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التعلم البيئي‪.‬‬ ‫كاوســت‪ ،‬كجزء من وحدة‬ ‫وتــم تجهيز الطلبة بمعدات الغطس‬ ‫وألــواح تابلت مقاومة للماء‪ ،‬وقاموا‬ ‫بفحص الشــعاب المرجانية هناك‪.‬‬

‫ودفع نجاح الرحالت األخيرة مدرسي‬ ‫مدرسة كاوست والباحثين في مركز‬ ‫األبحاث‪،‬إلى األمل بأن تصبح رحالت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جزءا من المناهج‬ ‫أشجار القرم والغطس‬ ‫األكاديمية‪ .‬إذ تشير ايليس‪" :‬هناك فرصة‬ ‫إلدخال مواضيع من البكالوريا الدولية‬ ‫ضمن رحالت أشجار القرم القادمة‪ .‬كما‬ ‫يمكن ادخال البيانات التي جمعها الطلبة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا"‪.‬‬ ‫خالل رحالتهم ضمن المنهاج‬

‫رحالت كاوست المدرسية‪:‬‬ ‫تعليم ذاتي وإدراك العالقات‬ ‫بين مكونات البيئة‬

‫عوضـ ًـا عن الجلوس في مقاعدهم‬ ‫الدراســية‪ ،‬قام طلبة علم األحياء للصف‬ ‫الثاني عشــر والصف الخاص باألنظمة‬ ‫والمجتمعات البيئية من مدرســة‬ ‫مدينة الملــك عبد اهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوســت)‪ ،‬بزيارة مركز ابن سينا‬ ‫لألبحــاث القائم عند نصب الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫في الحرم الجامعي‪.‬‬

‫ما بعد الدكتوراة في الجامعة ‪ ،‬وتيموثي‬ ‫طومسون ‪ ،‬طالب ماجستير في المركز‪،‬‬ ‫بمساعدة الطلبة للعمل في غابة القرم‬ ‫الموجودة هناك‪.‬‬ ‫تمحــورت مهمة الرحلة حول قياس‬ ‫ارتفاع أشــجار القرم وتسجيل كميات‬ ‫ســلطعون البحر‪ ،‬باإلضافة الى قياس‬

‫أن يأتي سائق فورموال ‪ 1‬من فريق‬ ‫ماكالرين إلى الجامعة للمشاركة في‬ ‫إحدى فعاليات برنامج اإلثراء الشتوي‬ ‫في يناير ‪ ،2019‬والذي سيكون‬ ‫موضوعه هذه المرة عن "الوقت"‪.‬‬ ‫ومن خالل هذه الشــراكة التي تمتد‬ ‫إلى خمس ســنوات‪ ،‬سيتم تعيين‬ ‫لجنــة توجيهيــة من ثالثة أفراد من كل‬ ‫مؤسســة‪ ،‬يقع على عاتقهم مسؤولية‬ ‫دراسة المشــاريع التعاونية المشتركة‬

‫بين الطرفين‪ ،‬واتخاذ قرارات بشــأنها‪.‬‬ ‫وتضم هذه اللجنة من كاوســت كل‬ ‫من‪ :‬البروفيســور ماني ساراثي‪ ،‬و د‪.‬‬ ‫تيوفيلــو (جون) أبرايانو‪ ،‬مدير مكتب‬ ‫تمويــل األبحاث في الجامعة‪ ،‬والدكتور‬ ‫كيفــن كولن‪ ،‬نائب الرئيس لالبتكار‬ ‫والتنمية االقتصادية‪.‬‬ ‫وفــي هذا لصدد‪ ،‬يقول د‪ .‬أبرايانو‪:‬‬ ‫"إن عمــل اللجنة التوجيهية هو الجزء‬ ‫األســهل في هذا المشروع‪ ،‬ولكن‬

‫تقاســم الملكية الفكرية‬ ‫وتنص االتفاقية المبرمة بين كاوســت‬ ‫وشــركة ماكالرين على تقاسم الملكية‬ ‫الفكرية المشــتركة لالبتكارات الناشئة‬ ‫بموجب هذا التعاون‪ ،‬بحيث يســتفيد‬ ‫الطرفان من تســويق التقنيات التي‬ ‫يتــم تطويرها من هذه االتفاقية في‬ ‫الســوق‪ .‬على سبيل المثال‪ ،‬يمكن‬ ‫تســويق التقنيات المبتكرة في مجال‬

‫وزن خفيــف ألداء مرتفع‬ ‫هناك ما يقارب ‪ 300‬جهاز استشــعار‬ ‫ومكونــات إلكترونية خفيفة الوزن‬ ‫في ســيارة الفورموال ‪ .1‬ومعظم‬ ‫هــذه األجهزة والمكونات تحصل على‬ ‫الطاقــة من البطاريات‪ ،‬ناهيك عن أنها‬ ‫متصلة ببعضها البعض بواســطة أسالك‬ ‫وكابالت‪ ،‬مما يزيد من وزن الســيارة‬ ‫ويؤثر سـ ً‬ ‫ـلبا على أدائها‪ .‬ولو استطعنا‬ ‫إنقــاص ‪ 2‬إلى ‪ 3‬كيلوغرامات من هذا‬ ‫الــوزن‪ ،‬من خالل اعتماد أنواع جديدة‬ ‫من أجهزة االستشــعار ذات الوزن‬ ‫الخفيف‪ ،‬فإن األداء المكتســب سيكون‬ ‫جدا‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مرتفعا ً‬ ‫تعد أجهزة االستشــعار واإللكترونيات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا لســيارات الفورموال ‪ 1‬كونها‬ ‫مهمة‬ ‫تعمــل على محرك هجين‪ .‬ويوجد بها‬ ‫أيضــا محرك االحتراق الداخلي‪ ،‬ونظام‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اســتعادة الطاقة بواسطة البطاريات‬ ‫والمحــركات الكهربائية‪ .‬ويوضح‬

‫ســاراثي‪ ":‬أي عمل نستطيع من خالله‬ ‫إنقــاص وزن المكونات اإللكترونية‬ ‫وأجهزة االستشــعار داخل السيارة‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا على األداء‪.‬‬ ‫مردودا‬ ‫ســيكون له‬ ‫لهذا كان فريق ماكالرين راســينغ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مهتما بصورة خاصة بأبحاث كاوســت‬ ‫في مجال أجهزة االستشــعار المرنة‪،‬‬ ‫واإللكترونيــات الخفيفة والتقنيات‬ ‫الالسلكية"‪.‬‬ ‫كمــا أبدى فريق ماكالرين اهتماما‬ ‫خاصا بعمــل الباحثين في جامعة الملك‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا‬ ‫عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪،‬‬ ‫أعمال المختبر األساســي لتصنيع‬ ‫النانو‪ ،‬حيث التقوا البروفيســور عاطف‬ ‫شــميم‪ ،‬بروفيسور مشارك في الهندسة‬ ‫الكهربائيــة والذي يعمل على أجهزة‬ ‫االستشــعار الالسلكية‪ ،‬والبروفيسور‬ ‫يورجين كوســيل‪ ،‬بروفيسور مشارك في‬ ‫الهندســة الكهربائية‪ ،‬والمتخصص في‬ ‫أجهزة االستشــعار المرنة والخفيفة‪ .‬وال‬ ‫تزال المناقشــات مستمرة حول أوجه‬ ‫التعــاون البحثي في هذه المجاالت‪.‬‬

‫ومــن المجاالت العلمية األخرى التي‬ ‫حــازت على اهتمام فريق ماكالرين‪،‬‬ ‫هي تقنية الرؤية الحاســوبية التي تعد‬ ‫من االهتمامات البحثية للبروفيســور‬ ‫برنارد غانم‪ ،‬البروفيســور المشارك في‬ ‫الهندســة الكهربائية‪ ،‬والذي يعمل‬ ‫في مركز الحوســبة المرئية في‬ ‫الجامعــة‪ ،‬حيث تتركز جهوده البحثية‬ ‫في مجاالت الرؤية الحاســوبية والتعلم‬ ‫اآللي ومعالجة الصور‪ .‬وقد ســبق‬ ‫للبروفيســور غانم العمل على تقنية‬ ‫المســح الحاسوبي لمقاطع فيديو‪،‬‬ ‫تتضمــن مجموعة من األلعاب الرياضية‬ ‫بهدف دراســة وتحليل حركة الالعبين‬ ‫والرياضيين‪ .‬وفي هذا المســار‪ ،‬تقدم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا‬ ‫مصدرا‬ ‫ســباقات الفورموال ‪1‬‬ ‫من مقاطع الفيديو المباشــرة وبيانات‬ ‫الصوت وقراءات أجهزة االستشــعار في‬ ‫سيارات الســباق‪ ،‬التي يمكن تحليلها‬ ‫بشــكل أكثر فعالية من خالل تقنية‬ ‫التعلم اآللي‪◄.‬‬

‫أبحاث كاوست في حلبة‬ ‫الفورموال ‪1‬‬ ‫قــد تكون أجزاء من الثانية الواحدة‬ ‫هــي الفاصل في تحديد الفريق الفائز‬ ‫أو الســيارة األسرع في معظم سباقات‬ ‫الفورموال ‪ .1‬فعند النظر الى ســباق‬ ‫في حلبة متوســطة من ‪ 70‬دورة على‬ ‫ســبيل المثال‪ ،‬فإن هذه األجزاء من‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فرقا بين السيارات‬ ‫الثانية قد تشــكل‬ ‫المتســابقة‪ ،‬يصل ما بين دقيقة الى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫دقيقتيــن‪ .‬ويتحكم في ذلك‬ ‫ظــروف وعوامل كثيرة‪ ،‬منها مدى‬ ‫االنســيابية الهوائية لتصميم السيارة‬ ‫(ديناميكية الهواء)‪ ،‬ووزن الســيارة‪،‬‬ ‫وبراعة الســائق‪ ،‬ونوع اإلطارات‪ ،‬وجودة‬ ‫احتراق الوقود‪.‬‬

‫للتميز العلمي‬ ‫مركز‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫في ســبتمبر العام الماضي‪ ،‬وقعت‬ ‫كاوسـ�ت وماكالرين ريسينغ( (�‪McLar‬‬ ‫‪ )en Racing‬اتفاقية شــراكة لمدة‬ ‫خمس ســنوات‪ ،‬تهدف بصورة أساسية‬ ‫لتطوير العلوم والهندســة في مجال‬

‫تقنيات األداء الفائق وتحســين سيارات‬ ‫الفورموال ‪ .1‬وحضر مراســم التوقيع‪،‬‬ ‫التي أقيمت في كاوســت‪ ،‬كل من مدير‬ ‫عام ماكالرين ريســينغ وكبير المهندسين‬ ‫وكبير مديري األعمال في الشــركة‪،‬‬ ‫حيــث تم اطالعهم على المرافق‬ ‫والخبــرات المتطورة في الجامعة‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تحديدا في المجاالت الرئيســية ذات‬ ‫العالقــة التي تهم ماكالرين كمجال‬ ‫أجهزة االستشعار واإللكترونيات‪،‬‬ ‫والمحــاكاة الرقمية على أجهزة‬ ‫الكمبيوتــر العمالقة وأبحاث الوقود‬ ‫واالحتراق داخل المحركات‪.‬‬ ‫من جهته‪ ،‬يقول البروفيســور ماني‬ ‫ســاراثي‪ ،‬المدير المشارك لمركز أبحاث‬ ‫االحتراق النظيف في كاوســت‪" :‬‬ ‫بالتأكيــد نحتاج الى علوم وأبحاث‬ ‫مثالية‪ ،‬كي نتمكن من هندســة تقنيات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فائقا‬ ‫أداء‬ ‫مؤثــرة في بيئات تتطلب‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مثل حلبة ســباق الفورموال ‪ .1‬لذلك‬ ‫يقع على عاتق علمائنا مســؤولية تطوير‬

‫طــرق تجريبية جديدة وأنواع جديدة من‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا بحاجة‬ ‫النمــاذج الرياضية‪ .‬ونحن‬ ‫لتدريــب طلبتنا على فهم المزيد عن‬ ‫هذه األنظمة المعقدة‪ ،‬التي تســتخدم‬ ‫في حلبة ســباق الفورموال ‪ ،1‬والتي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫علميا على أرض الواقع‪.‬‬ ‫مختبرا‬ ‫تعتبــر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫األمر الذي ستســتفيد منه أبحاث‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حتما في مجاالت مهمة‪،‬‬ ‫الجامعــة‬ ‫مثــل تطوير أنواع جديدة من الوقود‬ ‫وطــرق االحتراق‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى أجهزة‬ ‫االستشــعار والخوارزميات الحاسوبية"‪.‬‬ ‫وتقوم شــراكة كاوست مع ماكالرين‬ ‫في جوهرها‪ ،‬على سلســلة من‬ ‫المشــاريع البحثية التي سيتم اختيارها‬ ‫من قبل لجنة توجيهية مشــتركة‪ ،‬تهدف‬ ‫إلى تطوير األبحاث في خمســة مجاالت‬ ‫رئيســية هي‪ :‬ديناميكيات السوائل‬ ‫الحاســوبية (‪ ،)CFD‬والتعلم اآللي‪،‬‬ ‫والوقود ومواد التشــحيم‪ ،‬والرياضيات‬ ‫المتقدمة‪ ،‬وأجهزة االستشعار‬ ‫وااللكترونيات‪.‬‬

‫تكريم البروفيسور‬ ‫جان فريشيه‬

‫تقاعد البروفيسور جان فريشيه‪ ،‬نائب‬ ‫الرئيس األعلى لألبحاث واالبتكار‬ ‫والتنمية االقتصادية في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‪ ،‬في‬ ‫نهاية العام ‪.2018‬‬ ‫وكان فريشــيه قد انضم إلى كاوست‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مرموقا في الكيمياء‬ ‫علميا‬ ‫بصفتــه مرجعـ ًـا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قادما من جامعة‬ ‫فــي مايو ‪،2010‬‬ ‫كاليفورنيا في بيركلي‪ .‬وكتب فريشــيه‬ ‫أكثــر من ‪ 800‬ورقة علمية‪ ،‬حازت على‬ ‫أن‬ ‫أكثــر من ‪ 119‬ألف اقتباس‪ ،‬كما ّ‬ ‫لديــه حوالي ‪ 200‬براءة اختراع أمريكية‬ ‫ودولية‪ .‬وارتفع عدد االقتباســات من‬ ‫أبحاثه منذ وصوله إلى كاوســت‪ ،‬ما يدل‬ ‫علــى التأثير الطويل المدى لعمله‪.‬‬

‫وفي كاوست‪ ،‬بادر فريشيه إلى وضع‬ ‫استراتيجية بحثية محكمة‪ ،‬وإلى دمج‬ ‫مجموعة كاملة من المجاالت البحثية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بدءا من توزيع‬ ‫جامعة واحدة‪،‬‬ ‫ضمن‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫التمويل البحثي عبر "مكتب رعاية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مرورا بتزويد أدوات البحث‬ ‫األبحاث"‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وصوال‬ ‫عبر مختبرات كاوست األساسية‪،‬‬ ‫إلى الدعم من خالل توفير المعدات‬ ‫في مواقع األبحاث عبر قسم صيانة‬ ‫طور فريشيه‬ ‫معدات المختبرات‪ .‬كما ّ‬ ‫االستراتيجيات وأدار الموارد الضرورية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫لدعم األبحاث التعاونية والمشتركة‬ ‫الهوة‬ ‫تجسر‬ ‫المتعددة التخصصات‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بين العلوم والهندسة‪ .‬كما ساعد‬ ‫كاوست في وضع رؤيتها الرامية إلى‬ ‫أن تصبح جامعة أبحاث ذات شهرة‬ ‫عالمية‪ ،‬مع ثقافة ريادية من خالل‬

‫قال‪" :‬لقد انتقلت من صبي نشــأ في‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يتعلم ويبني‬ ‫هونغ كونغ‪ ،‬إلى شــخص‬ ‫مهنة في الواليات المتحدة‪ ،‬ليصبح رئيســاً‬ ‫لجامعة شــابة بارزة في هونغ كونغ‪،‬‬

‫رحلة جديدة‬ ‫رددت ندى الجاســم‪،‬‬ ‫وفي كلمتها‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫الحاصلة على شــهادة الدكتوراه ‪2018‬‬ ‫والمتحدثة باســم الخريجين‪ ،‬كلمات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫معالــي المهندس علي النعيمي‪.‬‬ ‫وكانــت ندى قد بدأت تجربتها في‬ ‫كاوســت في العام ‪ 2008‬كعضو‬ ‫في المجموعة التأسيســية لبرنامج‬ ‫كاوســت للطلبة الموهوبين ‪،KGSP‬‬ ‫والذي حصلت من خالله على شــهادة‬

‫الجامعية‬ ‫كلية لندن‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫البكالوريــوس من ّ‬ ‫‪ ،UCL‬ثم عادت إلى كاوســت للحصول‬ ‫على درجة الماجســتير في العام ‪،2013‬‬ ‫ومــن بعدها درجة الدكتوراه في علوم‬ ‫وهندســة البيئة‪ .‬وتعد ندى أول مشاركة‬ ‫في برنامج ‪ KGSP‬التي تتلقى شــهادة‬ ‫الدكتوراه من كاوست‪.‬‬ ‫خاطبت الجاسم الحضور قائلة‪" :‬الليلة‬ ‫ندخل في الفصل التالي من رحالتنا‪ .‬ولكل‬ ‫رحلة من رحالتنا بداياتها الفريدة والخاصة‪.‬‬

‫احتجنا إلى الكثير من العمل الشاق‪،‬‬ ‫وبعض الحظ الجيد‪ ،‬لكي يصل كل واحد‬ ‫منا إلى هذه اللحظة‪ ،‬هنا واليوم"‪.‬‬ ‫وأضافت‪" :‬إنها جزء من رؤية كاوســت‬ ‫أن تكــون منارة للمعرفة وإيجاد الحلول‬ ‫أرد الجميل ‪-‬‬ ‫للمملكــة والعالم‪..‬‬ ‫وأود أن ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كما أتصور أننا جميعا ســنفعل‪ -‬للمملكة‬ ‫وللعالم ولفهمنا المشــترك للواقع‪...‬‬ ‫فمســتقبلنا هنا! دعونا نواصل اإلنجازات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أبدا"‪.‬‬ ‫العظيمــة وال نتوقف عن التعلم‬

‫ً‬ ‫صرحا‬ ‫كانت الســبب الذي جعلها اليوم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عظيما‪ .‬فقبل ‪ 10‬ســنوات‪ ،‬أسند‬ ‫علميا‬ ‫مؤســس الجامعة‪ ،‬الملك عبداهلل بن‬ ‫عبدالعزيــز ‪ -‬رحمــه اهلل ‪ -‬لمعاليه مهمة‬ ‫تحويــل حلمه إلى واقع ملموس‪ :‬حلم‬ ‫إنشــاء جامعة عالمية تساهم في تحويل‬ ‫البــاد وجعلها في مقدمة دول العالم‬ ‫فــي مجال األبحاث واالبتكار‪ .‬فكانت‬ ‫قيادة معاليــه الحكيمة للجامعة منذ‬ ‫بداياتها‪ ،‬الســبب الذي جعلها اليوم صرحاً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عظيما"‪.‬‬ ‫علميا‬ ‫أن النعيمي‪ ،‬وعلى‬ ‫وأضــاف الفالح ّ‬ ‫الرغــم من أنّ ه خريج جامعات ليهاي‬ ‫بدوي‬ ‫وســتانفورد‪ ،‬إال أنّ ه‪ ،‬كأي فتى‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫في طفولته فــي المملكة‪ ،‬كان التعليم‬ ‫الوحيــد المتاح له هو "جامعة الحياة"‪.‬‬

‫وأشــار الفالح‪" :‬منذ صغره‪ ،‬كان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مدركا ألهمية التعليم‬ ‫النعيمــي‬ ‫الجامعي وقدرتــه الحقيقية على تغيير‬ ‫األفراد والمجتمعات وتنمية الشــعوب‬ ‫وازدهارها‪ .‬وقد ســاهم النعيمي من‬ ‫خالل عمله في كاوســت مساهمة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خيارا‬ ‫كبيرة فــي منح األجيال المقبلة‬ ‫رائعـ ًـا لمتابعة تعليمها في الحياة"‪.‬‬

‫لألكاديميين‪ ،‬بل ورشــة عمل للعقول‬ ‫الالمعــة والحلول المبتكرة‪ .‬ففكرة‬ ‫كاوســت تتمحور حول كل ما يدور‬ ‫أبعد مــن هذه النقطة على الخريطة‪،‬‬ ‫فاألفــكار والمبتكرات تتوالد وتنطلق‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فرقا‬ ‫مــن هنا في ثول‪ ،‬لكنها تحدث‬ ‫عندمــا ّ‬ ‫تحلق‪ ،‬في عموم وطننا وحول‬ ‫العالم"‪.‬‬

‫لندع األفكار تنطلق‬

‫نجاحات كبيرة وبدايات‬ ‫جديدة تسطر قصة كاوست‬

‫احتفلــت جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية (كاوســت)‪ ،‬في ‪ 14‬ديسمبر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خريجا إلى‬ ‫‪ ،2018‬بإنضمــام ‪243‬‬ ‫مجتمــع خريجيها العالميين‪ ،‬وذلك خالل‬ ‫حفل التخرج التاســع للجامعة‪.‬‬ ‫وحضــر الحفل أعضاء مجلس أمناء‬ ‫الجامعــة‪ ،‬بمن فيهم رئيس مجلس‬ ‫األمنــاء معالي خالد الفالح‪ ،‬وزير‬ ‫الطاقــة والصناعة والثروة المعدنية‬ ‫فــي المملكة؛ والقيادة التنفيذية‬ ‫للجامعــة؛ وأعضاء هيئة التدريس فيها‬ ‫وطلبتهــا‪ ،‬وعدد من أعضاء مجتمع‬ ‫كاوســت‪ .‬وشهد الحفل تسليم ‪102‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خريجا شــهادة الدكتوراه و‪ 141‬شهادة‬ ‫درجة الماجستير‪.‬‬

‫فيها بالشكر إلى المجتمع بأكمله على‬ ‫جهوده في إنجاحها‪.‬‬

‫وكان أبرز ما شــهده االحتفال‪ ،‬التنصيب‬ ‫الرســمي للرئيس الثالث لكاوست‪،‬‬ ‫الدكتور توني تشــان‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى منح‬ ‫درجــة الدكتوراه الفخرية األولى من‬ ‫كاوســت‪ ،‬إلى سعادة المهندس علي‬ ‫إبراهيــم النعيمي‪ ،‬رئيس مجلس أمناء‬ ‫كاوســت السابق‪ ،‬ووزير البترول والثروة‬ ‫المعدنية الســابق‪ ،‬والذي كان متحدث‬ ‫حفل ‪.2018‬‬

‫وقال الفالــح‪" :‬لدينا الكثير لنفخر به‬ ‫اليــوم‪ .‬ففي العام الماضي وحده‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مهم ًا في‬ ‫تقدما‬ ‫حققت كاوســت‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مجــاالت البحث والتعليم واالبتكار‬ ‫ورعايــة المواهب‪ ،‬وكل ذلك كان له‬ ‫تأثير كبيــر على المملكة وعلى العالم"‪.‬‬ ‫ٌ‬

‫برنامج اإلثراء الشــتوي‬ ‫سيعود برنامج اإلثراء الشتوي‪ ،‬أحد أبرز الفعاليات‬ ‫في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوست)‪ ،‬لينعقد في العام ‪ 2019‬في الفترة‬ ‫حفل التخرج كاوســت التاسع‬

‫من خالل محاضرات وورش عمل وفعاليات تجارية‬ ‫وثقافية وترفيهية‪ .‬وأنتج المكتب منذ العام‬ ‫‪ 2010‬ما مجموعه ‪ 1450‬فعالية؛ دعا خاللها‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جمهورا‬ ‫ومحليا؛ واجتذب‬ ‫دوليا‬ ‫متحدثا‬ ‫‪1240‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن‬ ‫شخصا‪،‬‬ ‫تراكميا بلغ عدده ‪101,850‬‬ ‫المتابعات على اإلنترنت‪ ،‬حيث تابع فعاليات‬ ‫برنامج اإلثراء الشتوي ‪ 2018‬حوالي ‪ 2.2‬مليون‬

‫ً‬ ‫مغامرا من أعضاء مجتمع‬ ‫انضم خمسة وأربعون‬ ‫كاوست إلى رحلة إلى مدينة الجوف السعودية‪،‬‬ ‫نظمها مكتب الشؤون الحكومية في الجامعة‬ ‫في ديسمبر ‪ .2018‬وقامت المجموعة بجولة‬ ‫سياحية شملت مناطق ومشاهد ممتعة‪ ،‬منها‬ ‫بئر سيسرا التاريخي‪ ،‬ومسجد عمر بن من الخطاب‪،‬‬ ‫وقلعة مارد‪ ،‬وبحيرة دومة الجندل‪ ،‬ومهرجان‬ ‫الزيتون في المنطقة‪.‬‬

‫فــي عدد هذا الشــهر من مجلــة المنارة‪ ،‬نأخذكم في‬ ‫رحلــة مميــزة عن اإلبداع والتقنيــة والتعليم‪ .‬ومع‬ ‫إحتفالنا بتخرج الدفعة التاســعة من طلبة كاوســت‬ ‫في حفل أقيم في شــهر ديســمبر الماضي‪ .‬نطلع‬ ‫فــي هــذا العدد على جهود شــخصيات أثرت مجتمع‬ ‫كاوســت وســاهمت في نجاح الجامعة منذ تأسيســها‪.‬‬ ‫وأحد هذه الشــخصيات‪ ،‬معالــي المهندس علي بن‬ ‫إبراهيــم النعيمــي‪ ،‬الرئيس الســابق لمجلس أمناء‬ ‫كاوســت‪ ،‬والوزير الســابق للبترول والمعادن في‬ ‫المملكة‪ ،‬الذي نال أول شــهادة فخرية من كاوســت‬ ‫خــال حفل تخرج األخير‪.‬‬ ‫وفي رحلتنا هذه‪ ،‬نسلط الضوء على أبرز شراكات‬ ‫كاوست مع شركة أرامكو السعودية وشركة مكالرين‬ ‫ريسينغ‪ ،‬التي توجت بإبتكارات جديدة في مجاالت‬ ‫الحوسبة الخارقة وتقنية األداء الفائق‪ .‬كما نطلع‬ ‫على الشركات الناشئة الجديدة التي تحتضنها الجامعة‬

‫كشركة أيريس التي تصنع تقنيات من شأنها تحويل أي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن معرفة كيف يعلم‬ ‫نافذة إلى لوح شمسي‪.‬‬ ‫علماء كاوست األالت وتمكينها من قدرة التعلم‪.‬‬ ‫باإلضافة إلى تســليط الضوء على الشــباب المحلي‪ ،‬الذي‬ ‫يعد ركيزة أساســية في مجتمعنا‪ .‬فمن خالل برنامج‬ ‫كاوســت لتنمية المتعلميــن الصغار‪ ،‬تمنح الجامعة أطفال‬ ‫المجتمعــات المجاورة الفرصــة لتجربة بيئة الجامعة‬ ‫التعليمية الفريدة‪ .‬كما توفر مدرســة كاوســت الفرصة‬ ‫لألطفــال للعمل في مراكــز أبحاث الجامعة كمركز أبحاث‬ ‫البحر األحمر‪ ،‬األمر الذي من شــأنه خلق فرص تعليمية‬ ‫جديدة من أجل إبداعات المســتقبل التي من شــأنها‬ ‫المســاهمة في رسالة الجامعة‪.‬‬
