Art Mecca in the Mountains Celebrating its 50th year in 2016, Anderson Ranch Arts Center boasts one of America’s leading yearround art programs.

Situated in a collection of historic barns and cabins remodeled into working studios and galleries, the Ranch is a uniquely idyllic place to visit and to create and celebrate art.

Founded by celebrated ceramist Paul Soldner in 1966, it has continuously drawn well-known artists such as painter Enrique Martínez Celaya, sculptor Tom Sachs and photojournalist Ed Kashi to teach, reside, show and discuss their work, as well as thousands of students and visitors every year. Situated in a collection of historic barns and cabins remodeled into working studios and galleries, the Ranch is a uniquely idyllic place to visit and to create and celebrate art.

Throughout the summer, you can experience a weeklong workshop in ceramics, photography, woodworking, digital fabrication, or another cutting-edge artistic medium. Visit the open studios or hear an art talk from an acclaimed international artist, then mingle at lunch in the healthy on-campus café. There are also programs for children and teens, including half-day, full-day and week-long art camps.

In celebration of its golden anniversary, Anderson Ranch is inviting back its top faculty and hosting a number of special events and exhibitions throughout Snowmass, boosting its programming especially during the 50th Anniversary Celebration Week, July 17–22, with events every evening including art openings, an open studio with Tom Sachs and artist lectures. — Steve Alldredge

ZEN VIEWS The views reveal themselves gradually as you ascend the switchbacking Rim Trail. Then, upon reaching the marble yin-yang platform at Spiral Point, the Elk Mountains spread themselves in front of you in all their glory. Nearly 360-degree views include Mount Daly with its distinct diagonal stripe, the pointed cap of 14,137-foot Capitol Peak, and a panorama of Snowmass Ski Area.

HEAVEN’S BELLS

There’s nothing more iconic to Aspen Snowmass than the Maroon Bells — and a unique perspective on them can be found at the top of the Elk Camp chairlift.

Presiding over the upper end of a glacier-carved valley like royalty, the twin 14,000-foot peaks top off a panoramic alpine view that also includes jagged summits, steep cirques and Snowmass’ rugged Hanging Valley.

The lookout point just one mile into the flat, easy Ditch Trail offers major rewards for minor effort.

Looking into the magical Snowmass Creek Valley you’ll see a mosaic of aspen and evergreen trees dominated by majestic Mount Daly. It’s like you’ve discovered a natural fairy tale kingdom that begs further exploration.

THE ICE AGE

While it’s fun to point out landmarks from a mountaintop, the view from Snowmass’ Sam’s Knob includes perhaps the most interesting story of all. Ringed by aspen trees and perched on a ridgeline, the nearly perfectly round lake below you is Ziegler Reservoir. Ziegler is the repository for thousands of perfectly preserved fossils of Ice Age animals, including mastodons and ancient camels, accidentally discovered by a bulldozer operator in 2010.

BIRD’S EYE

Between Snowmass and Aspen, a ridge crisscrossed with trails rises from sage-and scrub oakcovered foothills, offering endless views in all directions. From the imposing peaks in the Elk Mountain Range, to the gentler terrain rolling down toward the lower elevations of Basalt and Carbondale, to the bucolic hayfields of the Owl Creek Valley and the flank of Aspen Mountain behind it, it’s a beautifully complete vista of the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond.

ANIMAL ATTRACTIONS

Mammoths, Huskies, and Bulls.. Oh, My! Can you imagine a 13-foot tall mammoth walking through Snowmass Village? Well, they did many thousands of years ago and now you can see their teeth and bones at the Ice Age Discovery Center on the Snowmass Mall. There, you can learn the amazing science and mystery behind the 2010 discovery that unearthed fossils from mammoths, mastodons, ground sloths, and ancient camels more than 100,000 years old.

As you are entertained by an authentic western program that’s sure to delight the whole family, be sure to take in the views — the rodeo grounds are perfectly situated to enjoy a kaleidoscopic Snowmass sunset.

Before the rodeo, starting at 5 pm, enjoy the western ambience with a cowboy dinner, saloon, and free kids’ activities including a petting zoo and roping, mechanical bull rides and a bouncy house.

Krabloonik Mountain Dining & Dogsledding, the largest sled dog kennel in the continental United States, is right here in Snowmass Village. In summer, you can see these athletic dogs train, take a kennel tour to see the 250 sled dogs and their puppies or enter a puppynaming contest. An exquisite summer brunch or dinner is available in Krabloonik’s romantic, gas-lit log cabin.

Learn more about the animals, plants and trees that make up this magnificent landscape on a guided walk with one of the Naturalists from Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES). ACES offers two free guided tours daily in Snowmass including a Wildflower Walk and a Snowmass Ice Age Discovery Hike. Both tours cover approximately 3.5 miles, are 2 hours roundtrip and depart daily from the Ice Age Discovery Center on the Snowmass Mall.

Two Wheels

Novice mountain bikers can get comfortable on the flat, wide, shady Ditch Trail, a two-mile round trip to a spectacular lookout point into the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. Or let gravity help on the flowing 3.5-mile Verde Trail, descending from the top of the Elk Camp Gondola through spruce and aspen forest to Snowmass Base Village.

There are more than 40 miles of intermediate bike trails, from the massive aspen groves that curve along the mountainside shading the Tom Blake Trail to the buffed-smooth singletrack through the rolling scrub oak of Sky Mountain Park. Advanced downhillers get their thrills on the 3.2-mile, 1,400-vertical-foot Valhalla freeride trail, full of features including jumps, table tops and a wall ride. And for cross-country enthusiasts, the Snowmass Loop links together 25 miles of varied singletrack on a circumnavigation of the Snowmass valley — challenge yourself to this classic ride in one day or conquer it one section at a time.

Explore the area’s paved roads and trails on a road bike and you’ll be in good company. Consider the light. Early morning sunrises and late evening are best, as the angle of the sun produces softer light with longer shadows that will give your image extra depth and dimension.

Shoot in RAW format if your camera allows. The uncompressed file contains much more “information,” allowing more opportunities for post-production enhancement.

Before setting up, visualize the image you’re trying to make.

Consider your composition. For landscape shots, place points of interest in the foreground to set it apart.

To maximize depth of field, so that as much of the scene is in focus as possible, choose a small aperture (meaning a big f-stop, such as f/16 or f/22).

When using a small aperture, you will need to compensate by lengthening your shutter speed. Consider bringing a tripod to ensure your camera is completely still during the exposure.

Celebrating summer with music has been a tradition in Snowmass since the days of a then-unknown John Denver serenading a small bar audience with “Rocky Mountain High.” Summer in Snowmass is filled with music, made even more enjoyable by the spectacular outdoor setting of many of the shows — a mountain-ringed natural amphitheater under brilliant blue skies.

The Snowmass Summer of Free Music series kicks off on Snowmass’ Fanny Hill on June 11, with 11 free concerts over the course of the summer season. Drawing thousands each week, the free concerts are a longstanding tradition that celebrate and reflect the fun-loving local community.

Bring a blanket or a chair and have a picnic, dance up a storm or simply watch a spectacular Rocky Mountain sunset with a wide variety of musical styles, from rock to R&B to reggae to bluegrass. It’s a familyfriendly affair, with face painting, hula hoops and a bouncy house at select shows to keep the little ones entertained, too.

As the leaves begin to turn to gold, the JAS Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Experience (September 2-4) brings three days of worldclass musical performances on multiple stages to Snowmass Town Park. The incredible lineup includes Stevie Wonder, The Killers, Duran Duran, Train, Thievery Corporation, Andy Grammer and more.

In addition to all of the above, you’ll find plenty of tunes at bars and restaurants throughout Snowmass Village, whether it’s local minstrels serenading the crowd or DJs spinning the latest beats. TURKS, a new live-music venue on the Snowmass Mall, brings local, regional and national musical entertainers to town for nightly shows.

Beyond Snowmass

SNOWMASS IS A SLICE OF HEAVEN AND THERE ARE PIECES OF PARADISE ALL AROUND IT.

The Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness is home to 100 miles of trails, six of Colorado’s fourteeners (peaks over 14,000 feet) and the world-famous Maroon Bells. Options for discovering it range from a scenic, guided bus ride to Maroon Lake, where you’ll spend as much time as you want strolling this majestic open part of the valley and soaking in views of the most photographed peaks in North America, to a fully catered horseback exploration of the wilderness.

More experienced hikers can challenge themselves by climbing one of the local fourteeners — such as Castle Peak (14,279 feet), a good introductory peak because you can drive to 12,800 feet — or by hiking the 11 miles to Crested Butte, with an overnight stay in that charming mountain town.

Snow from all those high peaks eventually fills the glacier-carved river valleys around Snowmass, creating thrilling rapids as well as idyllic flatwater. Blazing Adventures offers rafting trips with various levels of excitement on three area rivers, plus trips and instruction on inflatable kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Fly fishing is another magical way to experience the area’s waterways —

there are 42 miles of gold medal trout waters along the Roaring Fork and Frying Pan rivers. Other unique water experiences include a sunset float down the upper Roaring Fork River through North Star Nature Preserve, a beach day at Ruedi Reservoir, and a stroll around Hallam Lake, an oasis for wildlife at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies.

Besides all that outdoor activity, there’s plenty of action in the Valley’s distinct towns. There’s Aspen, of course, with its Saturday farmers market, wealth of art galleries, boutiques, and cultural events such as Theatre Aspen, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and the renowned Aspen Music Festival and School’s eight-week summer season.

Ride a cruiser bike down to the funky hamlet of Woody Creek, home to the late Hunter S. Thompson and other characters.

Further downvalley lie charming Basalt, hip Carbondale, and bustling Glenwood Springs — each with their own unique character. And for a sense of local history, explore the ghost towns of Ashcroft and Independence, or take one of many tours through the Aspen Historical Society.

JUNE 16 HERITAGE FIRE Complementing the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Heritage Fire is an annual wood-fired, meat-laden feast featuring wineries, breweries, craft distillers and more than 40 notable chefs and butchers cook 3,000 pounds of heritage-breed animals in celebration of breed diversity, family farming and traditional outdoor cooking techniques. 4-7 pm.

JUNE 18 GRAND COCHON Complementing the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, this headto-tail, winner-take-all culinary showdown includes more than 1,200 pounds of heritage breed pork and the signature dishes that won the participating chefs their ticket to Snowmass, one of several regional competitions across the country that lead up to the Grand Cochon and the crowning of the “King or Queen of Porc.” 7-11 pm.

JUNE 20-24 13TH ANNUAL AREDAY SUMMIT, FILM FEST AND EXPO AREDAY, America’s premier renewable energy summit, offers a deep immersion into topics designed to precipitate a historic and necessary transition to an environmentally sound future.

JUNE 25 THE PRESTIGE IMPORTS SNOWMASS LOOP MOUNTAIN BIKE FONDO New to the mountain bike race calendar, this event for intermediate and advanced riders showcases the new Snowmass Loop, more than 20 miles of singletrack featuring over 3,000 feet of vertical gain with plenty of scenic vistas.

JUNE 25-26 SNOWMASS DEMO DAYS Demo the season’s hottest bikes on the lift-served downhill trails of the Snowmass Bike Park and the scenic roads and bike paths of Snowmass Village. 8:30am-4pm.

JULY 16 SUMMER OF FREE MUSIC: DEAF CAMP BENEFIT The Deaf Camp Benefit was established in the 1970s with the help of John Denver, Jimmy Buffet, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and others to support the great things Aspen Camp does for deaf and hard of hearing kids. Although it’s a free event as part of the Summer of Free Music, donations are encouraged to benefit the Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. 4-9pm.

JULY 17-22 50TH ANNIVERSARY ANDERSON RANCH ARTS CENTER Enjoy a week of festivities in celebration of Anderson Ranch Arts Center’s 50th anniversary. Festivities include exhibitions, workshops, lectures and more, culminating with a free concert on Fanny Hill.

SUMMER CALENDAR JULY 21-24 SNOWMASS DOUBLES VOLLEYBALL This boutique mountain tournament, produced by Volleyball of the Rockies, organizers of some of the largest volleyball tournaments in Colorado, brings to Snowmass a few hundred teams competing in multiple divisions for cash prizes. Sand and grass courts will be located throughout Snowmass Village with plenty of spectating opportunities.

AUGUST 7 AUDI POWER OF FOUR TRAIL RUN A 50K ultra trail-running race covering all four area mountains headlines a weekend that also includes a 22K trail run as well as a Vertical K race. The 50K and Vertical K are part of the US Skyrunner Series.

AUGUST 11 SUMMER OF FREE MUSIC: THE SAMPLES This free concert series draws crowds by the thousands to Fanny Hill. Bring a picnic and a blanket. Purchase drinks onsite. 6:30-9pm.

JULY 27-31 ENDURO WORLD SERIES Snowmass hosts the only US stop of the Enduro World Series (EWS), featuring eight rounds across three continents on the best trails possible. Riders will see six stages and over 15,000 vertical feet of descending, with both lift-served and backcountry access to the starts and a wide variety of gnarly terrain.

AUGUST 12-13 RAGNAR RELAY COLORADO This overnight running relay race makes testing your limits a team sport. Racers run in teams day and night from Copper Mountain to Snowmass.

AUGUST 19-21 ZOPPÉ ITALIAN FAMILY CIRCUS The Zoppé Italian Family Circus welcomes guests into their intimate 500-seat tent for a one-ring circus that honors the best history of the Old-World Italian tradition featuring acrobatic feats, equestrian showmanship, canine capers, clowning and plenty of audience participation.

AUGUST 1-2 CHALLENGE ASPEN’S VINCE GILL & AMY GRANT GALA & GOLF CLASSIC Hosted by Grammy Award winners Vince Gill and Amy Grant, their friends, disabled athletes and wounded veterans, this two-day event of musical and golf excellence provides an unforgettable experience. Proceeds benefit Challenge Aspen, providing year-round recreational, educational and cultural experiences for anyone with a cognitive or physical disability.

VIDA will complete the Flagship weekend with healthy meals, yoga, bike maintenance classes and happy-hour events.

AUGUST 5-7 COLORADO SCOTTISH FESTIVAL & ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGHLAND GAMES Now in it’s 53rd year, this festival features bagpipes, highland dancers, great highland athletes, clans, dogs of the British Isles, British cars, Celtic music, a free concert and more. And it’s dog friendly with free admission.

AUGUST 6 AUDI POWER OF FOUR MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE This aggressive cross-country mountain bike race starts with a ride to the top of Snowmass, across Buttermilk, up Aspen Highlands, then up to the Sundeck on Aspen Mountain. Two hundred people accept this yearly challenge that is quickly becoming a staple on the Colorado racing calendar.

SEPTEMBER 10-11 TOUGH MUDDER COLORADO This team-oriented 10- to 12-mile (18- to 20-km) obstacle course is designed to test physical strength and mental grit. With innovative courses, over 1.5 million participants worldwide to date, and more than $6.5 million raised for the Wounded Warrior project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world.

SEPTEMBER 15-17 THE FINEST AUTOMOBILE AUCTION AT ASPEN SNOWMASS The Finest Automobile Auctions is a new auction house focused on delivering the finest experience for collector car enthusiasts. They provide boutique auctions and customized buying opportunities for on-site and online buyers.

SEPTEMBER 16-17 SNOWMASS WINE FESTIVAL Hosted by Rotary Club of Snowmass Village, this flavorful weekend includes a dinner at the Viceroy Snowmass and a Grand Tasting in Town Park accompanied by live music, a silent auction, and a Ferrari Showcase all for the benefit of nonprofits and charitable organizations.

SEPTEMBER 16-18 SNOWMASS BALLOON FESTIVAL One of the highest-altitude balloon events in the country, the Snowmass Balloon Festival attracts 30 pilots who compete over three days in challenges such as a distance race that covers the Roaring Fork Valley. Highlights include the Saturday Evening Glow on Fanny Hill and free music with a light show, featuring brightly colored balloons lighting up the night sky.
