2022 SPRING GAL A HONOREES

JENNIFER & IAN WINTERS Jennifer and Ian Winters have been proud members and strong supporters of WJC for over 20 years. Jennifer and Ian attend contemporary and traditional Shabbat services, are active participants in WJC’s varied programming, and are dedicated and valued members of our community. They are grateful to be honored for their service at this year’s Gala.

Jennifer is a graduate of WJC’s Sulam for Emerging Leaders program and a former WJC Trustee.

Over the years, she has chaired or served as an active member of the Welcoming, Gala, B’nai Mitzvah, Religious School, New Member Outreach, and Green Committees, in addition to organizing women’s softball events. Jennifer regularly participates in WJC’s Israeli Dancing program, appears in the Purimspiel, and cooks and delivers meals with the Social Action Committee. Several years ago, Jennifer embarked on a project to enhance our Shabbat kiddushim. Each month, she organized a group of volunteers to join her in the WJC kitchen to share recipes and prepare tasty new dishes to supplement the usual kiddush fare.

Ian is also a graduate of WJC’s Sulam for Emerging Leaders program and currently serves as a WJC Trustee, Officer for Development and co-chair of WJC’s endowment campaign. Ian is the former chair of the Spiritual Life Committee and still serves as a high holiday coordinator for the sanctuary service. Ian participated in WJC’s most recent Strategic Planning Committee and has served on past Assistant Rabbi search committees.

Jennifer is a retired special education teacher and the author of two children’s books, including the recently published The Butcher, The Baker, and the Candlestick Maker: A Shabbat Story. She is also an avid crafter, baker, golfer, scuba diver, and a lover of Broadway musicals.

Ian is a partner at Klestadt, Winters, Jureller, Southard & Stevens, LLP, a law firm specializing in bankruptcy, restructuring, and commercial law matters. Ian enjoys cooking, scuba diving, golf, music, and rooting for New York sports teams that lose games with a maddening frequency.

Jennifer and Ian are the proud parents of Isaac, Abigail and Mitchell, each of whom attended WJC’s ECC and Religious School. Isaac is currently finishing his studies at SUNY Delhi, where he is majoring in Culinary Arts and Hospitality. Abigail is a junior at Elon University and hopes to pursue a career as a Physician Associate. Mitchell is currently a junior at The Harvey School in Katonah where he plays football and baseball. He and Isaac enjoy basketball at the open gym night each week at WJC.

2022 SPRING GAL A HONOREES

LINDA ALPERT & MARC KARELL Marc Karell and Linda Alpert have been valued members of WJC since the mid-‘90’s. They are regular attendees at Shabbat services, where Linda can sometimes be found assisting with the Haftorah reading, and Marc and Linda are stalwarts at Israeli dancing.

Over the years, Linda has been actively involved in many different aspects of WJC life, including stints as a WJC Trustee, Chair of the Israel Committee, and a member of the Spiritual Life and Music Enrichment Committees. Linda currently participates in the Women’s Renewal Service Choir and has been a member of the Rhythm and Ruach ensemble since its inception, where she plays recorder and tambourine. Linda is extremely proud to have brought Israeli dancing to WJC, as well as various movie nights, speakers, and other programs.

Marc is also active in WJC’s Israeli dancing program. When not dancing, Marc is a regular participant at WJC’s weekly pick-up basketball night. As the Chair of the WJC House Committee, Marc has been a truly invaluable asset. Marc has worked tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to improve WJC’s physical plant and to make the building more safe, efficient, and sustainable. Marc was instrumental in identifying opportunities for significant energy usage reduction and cost savings for WJC, actively involved in exploring various “green initiatives” and “green improvements”, and he has served as the point person for numerous repair, maintenance, and replacement projects. Marc’s efforts behind the scenes have made ours a more sustainable building, as well as a comfy place to daven, learn, and spend time together.

Linda grew up in Crestwood (Yonkers), NY and received her B.A. degree from Brandeis University and J.D. degree from Brooklyn Law School. Growing up, she was the first woman at her synagogue to read Torah at a Saturday morning Bat Mitzvah service, and still reads Torah and/or Haftorah at WJC as well as giving Divrei Torah. She practiced law for over 25 years and now does anti-money laundering compliance reviews for Barclays’ Financial Crime Unit.

Marc grew up in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx, is a Bronx High School of Science graduate, and graduated with a B.S. from New York University. He then got two Masters degrees, one from the University of Wisconsin in Biochemistry and the other from Columbia University in Chemical Engineering. Marc runs his own business, helping companies and building owners reduce their energy usage, costs, and environmental impact.

Marc and Linda got married in 1989 and have two wonderful and active children, Daniel and Jeffrey, who were educated at WJC and are proud to be Jewish and love Israel. They live in the Midwest and attend some WJC events on Zoom. Daniel and his wife, Hannah, have a beautiful daughter, Lily, now 2 years old, who had her baby-naming ceremony at WJC in the summer of 2021.

MESSAGE FROM RABBI ARNOWITZ Dear WJC Family, What a blessing to have the opportunity to recognize Ian and Jennifer Winters and Marc Karell and Linda Alpert for their extraordinary contributions to our WJC community. We learn in Pirkei Avot: …those whose deeds exceed their wisdom, to what may they be compared? To a tree whose branches are few but roots are many, so that even if all the winds in the world come and blow upon it, they cannot move it out of its place (after 3:18). Indeed, these four people do represent a tremendous amount of wisdom, which I have personally called upon for guidance on several occasions. And yet what truly amazes is their actions on behalf of this sacred congregation. In fact, there is nary an aspect of synagogue life that one of these four exceptional volunteers has not touched and made the better for it.

As a rabbi, I cannot adequately express my gratitude to each of them. To name just a few occasions upon which their activity and wisdom have been essential: I have worked closely with Ian as an officer of the synagogue on myriad issues. Jennifer has been a go-to person for enhancing the connections between members of the WJC family, including now co-chairing our Welcoming Committee. Marc’s expertise and effort have been essential in helping to overcome many of the challenges related to our physical plant, including issues with the building and my own house following Ida. And Linda, who chairs our Israel Committee has been an advisor and activist on everything from Israel to liturgical leadership to playing a mean recorder in our instrumental services. And these only scratch the surface of their activities related to WJC. It’s the same energy and activity that I have been privileged to witness them bringing to their personal lives. As parents and grandparents and in a variety of professional settings, Ian and Jennifer, Marc and Linda, live with an unusual integrity. A sense of rightness, dignity and commitment to others pervades every aspect of their lives. I am grateful to our event chairs, Linda Schwartzreich and Ann Colin, our Journal chairs Ann Goode and Sherry Thaler, and our raffle chairs Isabelle Arditi and Jacqui Kaplan for helping us honor these truly honorable people.

As we learned in Pirkei Avot - folks like our honorees have deep roots that stand them upright no matter what gets thrown at them. I will add that they are also the roots that hold up our holy congregation, literally and figuratively enabling us to weather the storms of this moment and keeping us upright and intact.

MESSAGE FROM THE WJC PRESIDENT Our honorees represent what is so special about WJC – more than just a synagogue, we are a family bound together by powerful bonds of love, devotion, and community involvement.

There is not a single aspect of the WJC community that has not been impacted in a positive way by our honorees, not only as individuals but as devoted and dedicated couples that enrich the life of our community in so many ways.

Ian and Jennifer have participated – and taken leadership roles – in virtually every aspect of WJC life. Ian is not only an accomplished attorney, but has emerged as a shul leader, serving in roles too numerous to list. God willing, his already long WJC resume will continue to grow. Having served with Ian as a fellow officer I have the highest regard for his ongoing contributions. His comments are always well thought out and constructive; his commitment to the welfare of our community is unsurpassed. Jennifer lights up our community in everything she touches – from chairing our Welcoming and Kiddush Committees to lending her hand to countless other ventures– not to mention those star turns in our Purimspiel plays. Ian and Jennifer, we are delighted that you, Isaac, Abigail and Mitchell, have found a home in our community.

Marc and Linda, your presence and active involvement in our Shul for more than 25 years enriches our community in so many ways. Marc’s expertise in engineering and environmental issues not only has made us more environmentally conscious and sustainable but has saved us money in the process. Our Building Superintendent, Jose Luis Fonseca, noted that Marc “reminds him of Moses; he seems to have an answer to every question.” Unlike Moses, however, Marc also sets a mean pick on the basketball court, and is a fleet-footed Israeli dancer. Linda is ever-present in so many aspects of WJC life – former Trustee, Israel Chair and active member of multiple committees, Israeli dancer extraordinaire, and talented musician and singer. I have enjoyed listening to, playing music and singing with Linda over many years and look forward to more opportunities to do so. We are thrilled to have you in our WJC family, along with your sons Jeffrey and Dan, daughter-in-law Hannah and beautiful granddaughter Lily.

A very special thank you to our incredible Gala co-chairs Ann Colin and Linda Schwarztreich. You have done an incredible job bringing this event together in difficult circumstances. Sherry Thaler was her usual amazing self in organizing the Journal and much else. And thanks to the other members of your committee for all your hard work, as well as the office and custodial staff. The results of your labors are clearly on display and much appreciated.

MESSAGE FROM THE GALA CHAIRS What a joy to celebrate the return of WJC’s Spring Gala--live! We are delighted to once again tear up the dance floor and clink our glasses together in cheer. We can’t imagine honorees more well-suited to ring in our jubilant return than Jennifer & Ian Winters and Linda Alpert & Marc Karell!

Always the “life of the party” but also the “brains behind the operation,” Jennifer and Ian have brought their extraordinary enthusiasm and commitment to countless volunteer efforts on behalf of WJC and our broader community. They have selflessly dedicated their time and energy to making WJC a welcoming and thriving “home” for us all, and the impact of their contributions will be felt for years to come.

Linda and Marc have led, participated in, and invigorated so many varied activities at WJC it is hard to keep count. From pioneering Israeli dancing and the “green initiative” at WJC to reading Torah and playing basketball, they have truly made WJC the center of their lives and are an inspiration for all of us to do the same.

We are so grateful to Sherry Thaler and Ann Goode for their hours of work on this fabulous journal and to Isabelle Arditi and Jacqui Kaplan for all of their efforts putting together our amazing raffle and silent auction. We also offer a shout-out to Sarene Shanus, who lent her experience and organizational talents to our community engagement efforts.

We extend our warmest appreciation to Randy, Seth, Sherry, David, Ian, and Jennifer for their thoughtful guidance throughout. Also, many thanks to Evan Schapiro and Katie Schlientz, who were the brains and creative genius behind all of our Gala communications.

Thank you to everyone on our Gala Committee, who lent us support, canvassed for raffle prizes, and devoted their efforts to reaching out to almost the entire WJC community.

We are grateful to the Westchester Jewish Center for honoring us at the 2022 Gala, and are particularly pleased to be recognized alongside Linda Alpert and Marc Karell. We have known Linda and Marc for years and appreciate all they do for our community.

WJC is a special place. For over 20 years, we have prayed, studied, and celebrated holidays and festivals here. We have been blessed to have Isaac, Abigail and Mitchell’s Bnai Mitzvahs at WJC, led by clergy whom we admire and respect, and Abigail received her Hebrew name on WJC’s bimah. We feel grateful to be part of such a dedicated and talented community which consistently strives to grow and to be a source of support and comfort to its members and to the greater community.

Our sincere thanks to our Gala co-chairs, Ann and Linda, and to the rest of the Gala Committee leadership team, Randy, Sherry, Ann, Jacqui, and Isabelle. This wonderful night would not have been possible without your hard work and the work of all of the other Gala Committee volunteers.

We are thrilled that we can share this honor with the Winters, who are not only friends but fellow Israeli dancers and Purim shpielers! We also thank all the dedicated volunteers recruited by the co-chairs, who worked tirelessly on all the small details to make this evening a success.

A heartfelt thank you as well to Rabbi Arnowitz, Rabbi Dalton and Cantor Goldberg for leading our services and providing opportunities for us to learn and participate spiritually and musically (including a baby naming ceremony for our granddaughter Lily last summer!) A special thanks as well to the Rhythm & Ruach band led by Cantor Goldberg, as well as the Sisterhood Women’s Choir led by Randy Heller, providing Linda the opportunity to spread her wings musically.

We also give thanks to the entire WJC community who have welcomed, embraced and supported us in good times and bad; to the WJC staff and especially Jose Luis for all their hard work in keeping the synagogue running like a well-oiled machine; and to all our friends and family joining us in celebration.

Last but not least, we thank Shmulik Gov-Ari for leading our Israeli dance group for so many years, creating a special community of dancers and enlarging our repertoire of “golden” dances.
