Financial Literacy
We participated in a Backpack Giveaway Celebration put on by Duluth School District and Neighborhood Youth Services. Families from Duluth were able to come get a free backpack full of all the school supplies they need. We encouraged youth to open savings accounts by funding new accounts with $25 to jump start their savings. We gave kids glitter tattoos and fun was had by all!
As a part of our robust partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Superior, Devin (East End Branch Manager) and Bre (Community Engagement Manager) have been providing financial literacy to athletes. They have met with each fall team and played “The Price is Real” to encourage fun and real conversations about money and budgets. Devin and Bre also gave them SCCU’s top financial tips for college students and talked about building credit. The UWS athletes loved the sunglasses and stickers.

Brewery Creek
We were proud to stand alongside Essentia Health, One Roof Community Housing, and Heirloom Property Management for a press conference on the revitalization of Brewery Creek Terrace. SCCU funded the loan as a way to help restore and revitalize a beloved piece of Duluth. “Our entire membership can be proud of longtime commercial members, Heirloom and Mike Schraepfer, for their dedication to the revitalization of this historic property in the Duluth Medical District,” said Tim Foster. “As a credit union, Superior Choice cares about people over profits and giving back to our communities. We have a mission to improve the financial well-being of our communities and see this monumental project being a key piece”.

Ben and Mary Anderson are thrilled to be the new owners of this historic and iconic spot in Superior, WI. Founded in the late 1880’s, Eddie’s Restaurant has been a staple restaurant in the community. They hope to revitalize the restaurant and plan to offer more robust food and drink choices, including vegetarian options while embracing the community by using local food suppliers, wine, spirits, and beer vendors. “SCCU is proud to provide this funding to Ben and Mary to help them achieve their dream of becoming business owners along with enhancing the Superior area community and encouraging growth in the restaurant industry,” says Eric Anderson, SCCU Commercial Loan Officer.

Mellen Home & School Association
The Mellen Home & School Association is an organization that was formed to help parents, school staff, and the community work together to share ideas about programs and activities that benefit our students. Their main goal is to establish a strong connection between parents and the school by supporting our faculty, staff, and students. Their purpose is to represent and advance the views, interests and perspectives of parents in the school community; to lend its support to activities and programs for students and faculty. Together we can achieve our common goals of supporting our children, the school, and the entire Mellen School Community.

Each month we will feature a different non-profit organization, nominated by our members and employees, by awarding donations and celebrating the hard work they do. At the end of 2022, we will vote for 3 of the 11 non-profits and award the winners with a larger additional donation up to $10,000.
SCCU is going mobile! We are starting our journey to helping students save for their future by providing them an easy and convenient way to access their bank account. Starting this month SCCU will be at Superior High School every Tuesday & Thursday to open accounts and perform transactions. We are also growing our partnership by providing financial literacy and support for students, families and faculty. We will have more info on this next month, along with some pics!
