Food insecurity—another world issue drastically worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. And another world issue that our community is striving to solve on a local basis.

The Mini Farm Project (MFP), a community initiative established to eliminate food insecurity, makes use of special purpose urban and peri-urban farms. Each farm is specially designed to produce food for those in need, with the help of local charities and food relief agencies. It is the MFP’s belief that our community’s vulnerable members deserve access to nutritious food—always.

By converting underutilised spaces into urban farms to grow good quality food, this registered charity is saving livelihoods all round—and turning the heads of generous locals willing to offer more helping hands. Moreover, you can find the MFP locally at Samford with the organisation leasing half an acre from Millen Farm. In addition, they have partnered with Meals on Wheels Pine Rivers & Districts and grows fresh nutritious produce at no cost to Meals on Wheels. This allows them to divert funds that they would have spent on produce to other vital services. Liam (pictured on the left) is the Samford sites farmer and he works hard on the farm to supply a weekly Liam Dolan,MFP Farmer delivery to Meals on Wheels. with CEO & Founder of the MFP also grows and delivers free produce to our neighbourhoods, and has harnessed the power MFP Nick Steiner of Patreon—their fresh website—to set up a fundraising initiative where people can sign up to support them. Park Jam Coming Soon to Everton Hills

Sundays in spring are getting a creative boost with live music and hands-on art happening in parks across Moreton Bay Region.

From acoustic live music to hands-on creative art activities and installations, Park Jam is bringing joy and colour to local communities over five Sundays in October.

Lucky enough for The Hills District residents, there is a Park Jam taking place on Sunday 24th October at The Hills District All Abilities Playground, Everton Hills. Three music acts will perform, ranging from soulful originals to jaunty folk and atmospheric jazz and two local artists, Mel Brady and Marian Reginato, are also offering a hands-on creative art activity, inviting community members to share what makes their heart sing.

Park Jam is open to all ages and free of charge, Mayor Peter Flannery encouraged everyone to come along and enjoy the entertainment.

Monster Event in Blackwood Street

Recipe of the month Tuna & Pea Patties

Ingredients • 2 Cups Frozen Peas • 3/4 Cup Panko Breadcrumbs • 3 eggs • 1/4 Cup Plain Flour • 185g Canned Tuna in oil • 250g pkt microwave rice • 2 Garlic Cloves

Method: Mash peas in a bowl and add breadcrumbs, flour, garlic, tuna. Stir to combine and season with salt and pepper.

Heat half the oil in a pan.

Place 1/4 of pea mixture in the pan and flatten slightly with a spatula. Repeat to form 6 patties. Cook for 3 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through.

Ghosts, ghouls, witches and definitely some Harry Potter inspired dress ups!! These are just some of the sights you will find down at the 2021 Blackwood Street Halloween Festival on Sunday 31 October in Mitchelton.

The community festival is one of the most popular - and definitely the spookiest - events to take place on the northside of Brisbane with over 5000 children and adults expected to participate this year. Unfortunately last years event had to be cancelled due to COVID 19 restrictions, so this year it is something the community is very much looking forward to.

The Rotary Club of Mitchelton will again coordinate the event in conjunction with the Brisbane City Council, who is the major sponsor and the theme is ‘Harry Potter’!

Blackwood Street, between Samford Road and Grovely Terrace, will close to car traffic between 3pm and 6pm on Sunday 31 October and the street will be transformed into a veritable playground of free entertainment.

There will be something for all the family including children’s games, entertainers, live music, market stalls, face painting, jumping castle and a sensational Doughnut Eating Competition, plus so much more!!. It promises to be hugely popular with the kids! There will also be awards for the Scariest and Best Costume so get your thinking cap on to what costume you might adorn.

So venture if you dare, and ‘Trick-or-Treat’ your way through the local businesses and market stalls.

Longstanding Local Vets Sport A New Look

The team at Everton Hills Veterinary Surgery are delighted to unveil their modern new-look practice to the community.

This longstanding veterinary practice has called The Everton Shopping Village on Camelia Avenue in Everton Hills home since 2004 and was due for a well earned refurbishment.

And what a big refurbishment it was, with the entire surgery closing down for six weeks to accommodate for the extensive renovations.

However, as staff member and clients can testify, it was well worth the wait with the practice now boosting a state-of-theart sterile surgery, a purpose built Pharmacy and Laboratory, along with brand new kennel facilities. Out front, the impressive reception area has also undergone a transformation and is modern, bright and welcoming with a cheerful mural by Alan ‘Sheeps’ Scheepers spanning one side of the waiting area.

Vet Anita is revelling in her new setting and finds treating her furry friends much more practical.

‘Although we have always had the most contemporary equipment at the practice, the previous layout of the surgery was dated and far from ideal,’ says Anita.

‘Now we have a fantastic practice that has so much usable space, everything has its place and it feels the entire space was made for a vet clinic! Even the dogs have given it a paw seal of approval!’

The Wolves Women Show Their Bark

Celebrations are in full swing at the Everton Wolves Junior Australian Football League (JAFL) club with their U15.5 Girls Division 3 winning the AFLQ juniors Grand Final last month.

The Grand Final took place on the first weekend in September at the AFLQ Headquarters, Cansdale Street, Yeronga. Despite stiff opposition, the ladies triumphed!

Last year, due to low numbers, the team was merged with the Ipswich Eagles and they only won 2.5 games. However, this year, with some good recruiting from the players, the club was able to form their own team with nine brand new players to AFL from the squad of 21. They were part of this year’s 30% growth at the Everton Wolves JAFC. Some of the girls have been playing since 2015 and were part of the first Girls team at Everton in 2016. Seven of the girls are from the first female team to make finals in 2019.

Charles Tibbitts, President of the Everton Wolves AFL could not be prouder of the clubs all -female team who have worked incredibly hard all year to develop their skills.

‘These girls have shown an amazing camaraderie to become a great group that plays as a team,’ said Charles.

‘The skills have increased week by week and nothing stopped them from training and playing as a group. They are an inspiration to all girls, that anyone can play AFL and all are welcome down at The Den.’ The club trains at the 93 Mott Street, Gaythorne. Players are welcome from ages 8years old to 17 years old.

Arana Finishes Season with a BANG!

Arana Netball have finished off the 2021 season in terrific form, with three of their ten competitive teams winning their Grand Finals.

Arana 1, one of their opens teams, fought hard for a spot in the Grand Final and took home a challenging win.

In addition, despite having three players out due to illness or injury, Arana 3 (one of their inter teams), took home a convincing Grand Final win. The team called in the help from three fresh faces from the cadets to make numbers up, and the girls gelled together beautifully.

Finally, Arana 8 (the under 12’s team), had their chance for Grand Final victory. After being moved up a division, it was destined to be an exciting game. The girls were down significantly at half time, however, they rose to the challenge and came home with a Grand Final win.

Local Gymnasts Triumph at Championships!

The Gymnastics Queensland MAG & WAG Junior State Championships took place at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre from the 20th –23rd of September.

The championships are an ideal place to watch talent from Queensland’s junior gymnasts.

We are excited to report that gymnasts from The Mitchelton Youth Club (MYC) had an incredible result, with Loen Field finishing second in the All Around Level 3 competition. He had phenomenal performances that resulted in him becoming the State Champion on floor, along with placing third on the Horizontal Bar. Furthermore, another MYC gymnast, Christian, took out second place in the All Around in Level 5. He won the State Champion title on the Floor and the Pommel Horse. He also took second place on Rings and Horizontal Bar, with a third place on Vault.

Well done kids, the MYC coaches and the community as a whole are so proud of you!

Seven Tips to Look After Your Mental Health During the Pandemic During these challenging times it’s especially important to look after your mental health and overall wellbeing.

Here are seven simple tips to assist: 1. Keep Physically Active Keeping physically active is great for your mind and body. Exercising outdoors is a great way to get fresh air and feel more energised. Exercise regularly and choose activities that you enjoy, such as walking, jogging, yoga or an indoor workout. There are also many free exercise and yoga videos on YouTube.

2. Eat Healthy Nutritious Food Eating healthy food is important for our mental and physical health – after all, “you are what you eat”. Eat lots of different fruits, vegetables and other high-fibre foods. Limit snacks and drinks which are high in sugar, unhealthy fats and salt.

3. Stay Connected Social connection is crucial for our mental health. Stay in touch with family and friends over the phone or online.

Share your feelings with loved ones and trusted people from your community and invite them to share with you.

4. Take a Break From the News and Social Media It’s good to stay informed but choose trusted sources of information. Social media can help you stay connected,

but too much can make us feel stressed, passive and overwhelmed.

5. Stick To a Routine Have a regular bedtime and mealtimes. Plan your day so you have time for household chores, connecting with others, activities you enjoy, and rest.

It’s also good to be aware of family, friends and neighbours who may be worried or stressed. Things to look out for include difficulty concentrating, poor sleep, and feeling distressed or overwhelmed. These are signs that it’s time to reach out.

7. Seek Support Don’t be afraid to talk to someone if you feel stressed or anxious. Talk to friends and family about how you’re feeling and if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you can talk to a trained counsellor any time, by calling the Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Line on 1800 512 348.

Healthier Kids Menus Coming Soon to QLD

Queensland cafés and restaurants will be empowered to offer healthier menus for children, thanks to the state’s first Healthy Kids Menu initiative, launched by Health and Wellbeing Queensland.

Launched in July, this new initiative will see Queensland venues participating in the program offer healthier menu options for children so it’s easier for families to make healthier food and drink choices when eating out.

Childhood obesity is fast becoming a significant problem, with one in four Queensland children overweight or obese.

Given the amount of food and drink consumed outside of the home, venues can be a positive force for helping to set kids up with healthy eating habits for life.

Local food venues are invited to become part of this new initiative. Approved venues will be given access to promotional resources such as posters, flyers, certificates and social media content, to help get the word out to customers and provide greater exposure within your local community. This includes the Queensland Healthy Kids Menu tomato icon, which can be displayed beside the healthier items on your kids menu. Venues are encouraged to use the tomato icon to make it easier for families to choose healthier options.

Rehabilitation For Your Best Life

The rehabilitation unit and allied health team at North West Private Hospital in Everton Park continues to grow in response to community needs, since opening with its purpose-built, light-filled gym and consulting rooms on the hospital’s ground level in June last year.

Allied Health Manager Graeme Walker said while the team works with a wide variety of patients, the Day Patient Rehabilitation Programs are particularly popular – including arthritis exercise, chronic pain program, and the newest: a cancer care program.

“The service has grown beyond our expectations in the first year.

“We see patients for surgical reasons or medical reasons to help them recover – and we can provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy, exercise physiology, also psychology, speech therapy and dietetics,” he said.

The Day Programs generally run twice a week, for two to three hours at a time, over a six week period –available to eligible privately insured and veteran patients from hospitals and directly from the community.

The Arthritis Day Rehab program provides exercise specifically tailored to help those struggling with the aches and pains of arthritis. Graeme said as well as providing potential to reduce joint pain, exercise also has potential to improve joint mobility and aid better mental health.

“Many Australians aren’t aware that there are simple proactive ways to address arthritis, long before it reaches the point of being a debilitating condition, and ideally

preventing that entirely.”

Graeme said the Pain Day Rehab program also offers small group education sessions on topics including explaining pain, pain and exercise, managing pain and pharmacy / medications and pain.

The newest addition to the Day Rehab offerings is an education and exercise program supporting people who have experienced a decline in functioning and quality of life as a result of cancer treatment.

Cancer treatment can affect the ability to perform everyday activities, and by combining education and exercise, our multidisciplinary team at North West Private Hospital works to help empower people to maintain an active and fulfilling life through the CancerCare ACTIVATE program.

Participants can be at various stages of their journey, whether that be before, during or after any treatment.

The program is designed to assist individuals to maximise participation in an active and fulfilling life, with a focus on functional and psychological wellbeing.

Referrals into the North West Private Day Patient Rehabilitation Programs can be made by GPs or medical specialists and one of the hospital’s three rehabilitation physicians will meet with the patient and assess their needs.

Want To Help Other Seniors Learn About Technology?

Brisbane Seniors Online (BSOL) has been assisting seniors and over 50s with computers and internet training in the Greater Brisbane area for over 20 years.

Tuition is undertaken in the learners’ own homes on their own computer or device and at a pace that suits them. They are taught what they would like to know as well as what they need to know to minimise risk from scams and fraud. Mentors teach learners how to make their devices safe and avoid the risk of viruses and malware. Tuition is carried out using empathetic, volunteer, unpaid mentors who ideally need to be around the same age as the learners they are teaching. The current average age of BSOL learners is 74.

There has been an influx of new learners in the local area and Brisbane Seniors Online is now desperate to recruit more volunteer mentors to continue this service to seniors and over 50s.

BSOL teaches Windows, Apple, Android and smart phones.

A recent concern is the introduction of the Qld Health QR code requirement. BSOL mentors can assist learners with installing and using this application and explain the alternative options where they do not have a smart phone running the application. Computer and internet users with some or all of skills and experience on these devices are welcome to become volunteer mentors.

Mentors join Brisbane Seniors Online at no cost. There are no paid staff in BSOL, but mentors receive great satisfaction in helping seniors and over 50s safely and confidently use their computer and the internet. Mentors can receive support through the Mentor Support Group that is currently meeting through Zoom, but pre-coronavirus they used to meet face to face.

Learners receive - as a guide - 12 hours of lessons. When that is complete, they receive ongoing support for the balance of their membership year.

There is also a Digital Photography Group, as well as a Linux Group. The Linux group meet currently by Zoom, but the photography group do have regular photographic excursions to interesting locations, as well as face to face meetings.

Serenata Singers Have Emerged!

The Gap Serenata Singers have, like everyone else, have had their fair share of disappointments in cancellation after cancellation of concerts for community groups.

The group has been active for more than 50 years, engaging with the community. A large part of their existence has been to provide concerts for community groups, particularly Aged Care facilities. The group finally had the opportunity to perform in public again on Monday 13th September. Fifteen of their members had the privilege of presenting a short repertoire to a senior’s group which meets regularly at The Gap Uniting Church. The performance included a number of regular tunes of the group, four solos by members of Serenata Singers and a community sing-along with the seniors, of old favourites like ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ and ‘When You’re Smiling’. From all accounts, the concert was well received and many a senior wanted the singing to continue. The Little Viking Story

A million years ago there lived a magical viking named Loki, the magical wizard.

He loved spells and magic. He was incredible at performing magic in front of vikings. He was the leader of all the vikings and they lived in viking lands.

He was 599 years old!

One stormy night Loki dreamed about having a big feast with his crew. It was so amazing. When he woke up, he thought it was real, but it wasn’t. So, he decided to leave the viking lands where everyone knew they were so happy.

But then a little viking asked, ‘Where are we going?’

Then Loki said, ‘We are going to China!’

So, they built a long ship. They sailed across the sea until they came across the Cracken. They wanted to fight it but there were 10 Crackens so the crew went under the boat.

They were safe. They planned a good plan. ‘So, one Viking for each Cracken and the rest of us turn the boat, okay?’

The plan worked. They kept sail across the sea.

When they arrived at China, they walked and walked until they reached a village. They declared a battle and they won.

They had a feast to celebrate, and they had a good village.

Loki’s dream was real.

The Lonely Tree

‘Come build a nest in me, sit under this shady tree’ Once there was a tree, not just any tree, it was a lonely tree. In fact, he was the only tree in the whole park. The tree would usually sing songs so that he wouldn’t get bored.

It was summer and this is when the tree feels very lonely.

No people would ever sit or play under him; no birds would ever build nests in him. It’s like he was almost…..

INVISIBLE! Days went by and still no one would sit under the lonely tree. He could see some trees in the distance with plenty of people under them. The people were playing and sitting to talk and having picnics. Everyone was having lots of fun; everyone except the lonely tree. Oh, the tree wished he could join the fun. He gave plenty of shade; more shade than any of the other trees in the town. So why would no one notice him? Why would no one play with him?

It started to get late, so more and more people left and the animals went to their homes. All the animals, people and trees went to sleep. The lonely tree was woken by someone whistling. The gardener was watering all the trees. As he watered the lonely tree, the tree thought, “At least someone notices me. Every morning the gardener would come by to water all the plants and make sure everything is their natural colours.

The next day the lonely tree noticed something very odd.

There were little things growing around him. He had no idea what they were. Then he started thinking… ‘Ohhhh I’m going to have some new friends. I can’t wait!’

The lonely tree kept thinking things like “Maybe I won’t be so lonely anymore”.

The tree got all excited but then he remembered something.

It can take a while for something to grow. ‘Oh well I’ll just have to wait a bit,’ he thought.

The next day the tree kept thinking about the little things growing in the ground. ‘What are they?’, he wondered, and “Why are they growing here?”.

The tree had so many thoughts that his head started to hurt.

‘Hmmm’, he thought. ‘Maybe I just need a nap.’ The tree took a nap but there were noises around him. He didn’t open his eyes though. When he woke up, he was overjoyed!

There were people playing with him.

Arana VIEW Club’s November meeting is on Wednesday 3rd November at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade, Keperra 10.30am for an 11am start. The cost for lunch is $30 for a 2-course lunch with tea and coffee.

This meeting is our last ‘Make, Bake and Grow’ table for this year. We missed out on the last one as a lockdown was in place so this one should be full of wonderful items for everyone to purchase. Remember Christmas is just around the corner, so this could be your chance to buy some gifts.

This meeting is also our annual Cent Auction, with more chances to organise Christmas. Bonnie has been collecting auction items all year for this event.

New Service Hub to Open for Veterans

RSL Queensland and Mates4Mates is proud to The Mitchelton Branch of the Older Womens Network Qld announce a new service hub for the veteran community Inc (OWNQ) meets formally and informally throughout the month and you are welcome to join them for any or all of our at Stafford.

The Hub will provide support, rehabilitation and camaraderie to current and former Australian Defence Force members and their families.

The new service hub will be located at 274 Stafford Road with works due to be completed by September 2022.

RSL Queensland and Mates4Mates will occupy the 1500 square metre top floor of the two-storey building designed by Brisbane firm Architectural Collaborative for builders Rogerscorp.

RSL Queensland State President Tony Ferris said the new services hub will provide more veterans in the highly populated area with easy access to services as well as a place of understanding, acceptance and community.

‘RSL Queensland and Mates4Mates will provide accessible in-person counselling, physical rehabilitation, employment support and mentorship support to current and former defence personnel and their families,’ Mr Ferris said.

‘We are committed to providing critical services to this highdensity community of veterans to address the root causes leading to veteran mental health issues. We are also proud to provide practical support, assistance and social connection to the families of veterans impacted by Defence service.’

More veterans live in Queensland than any other state and RSL Queensland proudly delivers more veteran wellbeing services in Queensland than any other Australian ex-Services organisation.

In 2017, after living abroad and in Sydney for many years, author K. M. Steele, made the decision to return to Brisbane, and settle in the Hills district.

While teaching creative writing and English Literature is her day job, she continues to build on the success of her debut novel, Return to Tamarlin, published in 2014, and recently teamed up with local up-and-coming outfit, Hawkeye Publishing, for the release of her second novel, Hunt for the Virgin Rainbow. Hawkeye has authors from all over Australia, with two, in addition to K. M. Steele, also from the local area. Hawkeye Publishing decided to sign K. M. Steele because she’s a master at comedic crime.

The first in a series of three, Hunt for the Virgin Rainbow, follows three jewel thieves as they attempt to steal the famous opal, the Virgin Rainbow (it does exist!), from a gallery in Coober Pedy. Throw in some camels, a helicopter, a cast of eccentric supporting characters and authentically captured landscape, and you have a cinematic, comedic romp through that starts in the Australian Outback, moves to Canada and returns to Queensland for the inevitable showdown. The main character, Mallory Cash, a mistress of disguise and a resourceful jewel thief, will return in Books 2 and 3: Race for the Topaz Stallion and Dash for the Diamond Crown.

K. M. Steele is appeared at Albany Creek Library on September 11th from 10.30am -noon with publisher Carolyn Martinez and local author C. T. Mitchell. As well as talking about the process of writing and publishing, the panel will discussed the history of pulp fiction in Australia.

Delving into the BCC Budget An update from Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association

Community Planning in Action The scope of our Association covers the suburbs of Ferny Grove, Upper Kedron and Keperra. These suburbs are all part of The Gap Ward of Brisbane. The Gap Ward also includes the suburbs of Ashgrove and The Gap. Following the recent release of the Brisbane City Council budget for the year ending 30 June 2022, we took a deeper look at how the budget will be applied to the suburbs we represent. In our August column in the Hills Echo, we provided some of the high-level analysis which found that as part of The Gap Ward’s $10.3m budget, Ferny Grove, Upper Kedron and Keperra have been allocated just over $3m in funding. This month, we share more detail on where that $3m has been assigned. See table to the right.

General Meeting & Planning Session The interactive community planning workshop we held as part of our August general meeting spurred plenty of constructive discussion on ways in which our local roads, parks, bikeways, footpaths, reserves and public transport could be improved or maintained.

A Musical Masterpiece Coming Soon!

For over 40 years, an Iconic Building sat high on top of Bowen Hills overlooking Brisbane.

Artie McClure-Sapper The Australian Army

Artie McClure was born in Caboolture in March 1918. He joined the war effort as a topographer due to the threat of Japanese invasion. He went to Darwin immediately after the bombing as much of the Northern Territory coastline had not been adequately mapped. Artie continues to live a simple life in Caboolture Queensland, not far from where he was born over 103 years ago.

Douglas Farmer

Leading Aircraftman - Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF)

Douglas was born on the 1st of February 1924 in Gympie, Queensland and has very fond memories of the region. Doug served the Kingaroy community, where he still resides for over 50 years. He was awarded a 'Comrade of Legacy' in 2006 and was presented with an OAM for his extensive community service in 2009.

Robert McDermant Nursing Orderly - The Australian Army

Robert was born in Motherwell, Scotland in 1923. Robert was working with the Queensland Ambulance service when he joined the Army and served in Papua New Guinea and Bougainville from 1941-1945. During his time in the war he supervised the new advent of blood transfusions in field hospitals and was instrumental in teaching doctors the proper procedures for this new skill. Robert lives in Caloundra and in 2019 he published "The Ambo", a memoir recounting his times in the Queensland Ambulance Service.

Preserving Fruit with the Pioneers

A monthly update from The Samford Museum The winter fruit season has passed. Are our pantries stocked with marmalades for another year?

Did you know Pioneering families planted fruit trees and were well known for preserving fruit? Turning citrus and other fruits into jams and marmalades was the best way of preserving in times before home refrigerators and freezers. Old recipe books also have instructions on how to preserve lemon juice, as well as making lemon syrup and orange cordial.

Cape gooseberries grew wild locally and the fruit was gathered and preserved as jam, as well as sold to Fischle’s Jam Factory in Roghan Rd, Bald Hills. Furthermore, Masons Preserving Works at The Gap was also well known for its variety of jams.

A key ingredient in marmalades and cordials etc is sugar, however Samford cannot boast of growing and processing Sugar Cane - that honour goes to Dayboro’s earliest days of settlement.

Sugar was purchased by the 70 lb (31.7 kgs) finely woven hessian bag on infrequent shopping trips to Brisbane or the nearest store. Once emptied, these strong bags were given new uses - with just a little imagination! Some examples were; aprons, door mats and oven cloths. In showery weather, it is reported that they even became a rain poncho! From the Samford Reminiscences we read of ‘a local walking to Samford’s four shops with a sugar bag tied with rope at the top and bottom and slung over his shoulder.’

Capital Gains Tax- When you sell assets such as property or shares you may incur a capital gain, and therefore be liable to pay capital gains tax.

When you sell an asset for more than it cost you - you have a capital gain. If you sell it for less, you have a capital loss.

There is a capital gains discount of 50% for Australian individuals who own an asset for 12 months or more.

This means that you pay tax on only half the net capital gain on that asset.

It is important if you own an investment property to keep all records associated with the purchase and sale of that property. Costs such as stamp duty, legal fees, real agent commissions, advertising etc are all costs that are used to reduce your net capital gain or increase your net capital loss. For example, Mary sells her investment property for $600,000. The cost base is $530,000 made up of $500,000 being the purchase price of the property, $15,000 stamp duty and $1,200 conveyancing fees.

Sale costs of $1,300 conveyancing fees and $12,500 agent’s commissions. Mary’s capital gain on the property is $600,000-$530,000 = $70,000. Mary is entitled to a 50% discount so the net capital gain is $35,000 that Mary must include in her taxable income.

The Girl Guides enjoy getting amongst nature

Ferny Hills Girl Guides have proudly been in your community for over 40 years. In recent years, we have seen our group go from strength to strength and grow in numbers in a huge way.

We have faced the pandemic together; doing online Guides through our laptops and tablets, moving to in-person socially distanced Guiding and back again, and we have come out the other side an impressively strong unit.

In the last few months, Ferny Hills Girl Guides have been camping, canoeing, crafting and climbing. This along with all of the activities we do each week during Guides; including cooking, science, art, drama, environment, dance and sport.

The girls particularly loved being a part of ‘The Great Guide Hike’ where we explored our local bushland, as well as getting out and about, spreading our love of Girl Guides in our community.

The girls range from 5 years to 17 years and participate in a wide variety of activities to develop their confidence, their leadership, their teamwork, their sense of community and most of all, their friendships. It seems that every week we have new friends coming along to try out Girl Guides – and we are expanding our units to let them all in! We even have an older unit for members aged 18-30, where we get involved with others our age from all across the State!

It is quite normal for us to shape our reality around those who have had an influence over our lives. This can be caregivers, friends or romantic partners. This is where we can get our self-worth and status from and learn how to behave and react, how to connect, and what to expect out of others.

The majority of us assume emotional abuse is just yelling, swearing, put-downs and threats. Yes, you are right – but so are criticisms (never good enough), judgements (never do anything right), unrealistic expectations (which you always fail), not showing love when you actually succeed or do good, not attentive to your needs (no affection/nurture), stonewall (refusing to communicate/silent treatment), won’t acknowledge your presence, cold or dismissive. Often these additional emotional treatments can hurt more than the verbal abuse.

Let’s get deep. These are all learned behaviours and can be developed into coping strategies to protect ourselves. If we were raised in a household where the above is familiar, this for you is considered ‘normal’ because it happened to you. You saw it all time, it was almost like expected responses to your

behaviour. So, this ‘moulds and shapes’ your development and teachs you what is safe, who you can trust, what you deserve.

Ultimately, how you should be treated and the romantic partners to look for as an adult. For example, if we were told as a child ‘it’s not OK to cry’ it teaches us to withdraw and disconnect from our own emotions. We now believe that our own feelings don’t matter. If we are told that nothing you did was ever good enough, as an adult it has the potential to develop perfectionism traits and OCD behaviours. As Aussies, this is SO common: what do you think Bruce sayin’ “Don’t worry, she’ll be right” actually tells us? 1. Bury our feelings 2. Denial (survival mechanism) 3. Not safe to talk about our concerns. Now we shut down. Thanks Bruce…

It’s so interesting that, as a whole, we may have not realised we experienced some form of childhood trauma, such as emotional abuse. This means that our needs were not met.Physical (affection, touch and cuddles), emotional (ignored, not good enough) or social (isolation & interactions with others). This Emotional Volcano can result into adults who are people pleasing, develop low self-esteem, struggle to recognise our emotions (so you detach), feeling numb, sensitive to rejection or avoiding it all together by isolating yourself (self-sabotage), feeling empty or even display narcissistic personality traits.

Too far? Now explains why we may treat others the same way we were - it is a ‘learned behaviour’.

All is not lost. Always remember that all your reactions are normal; you survived the best way you know how with the skills you developed. To change this pattern is to first recognise it - realising that your adult behaviours are a result of your childhood experiences. Secondly, we have to learn kindness and acceptance for who we are. Practice how to be warm and nurturing to yourself, understanding your needs and how to help you feel safe (so you don’t rely on others to make you feel good about yourself). This can be done with learning Emotional Intelligence, self-care and increasing wellbeing.

Thirdly, mindfulness. Listen to yourself, relax your mind and learn how to self-soothe. This helps you understand what is going on with your body, where the physical reactions are coming from, why they may be happening. Finally, Selfcompassion; you are making the positive change you deserve to break the lifetime of reinforced learned behaviours. This helps you to now be kind, gentle and patient with yourself rather than critical or attacking others. And no, please don’t blame the parents. They were trying their best at the time with the information they had. Holding onto resentment and blame can be exhausting and destructive. The only way to find a resolution is to work on yourself.

If this information is triggering or upsetting for you, please be brave and speak up. Get help, talk to a therapist like myself, or someone you feel respected, implement these strategies and be mindful of your own thoughts. Don’t believe everything you think.

You’re Not Listening To Me!

Dear Robin, I wonder if you have any thoughts on some strategies I could use with my 20 year old daughter. I find the way she flies off into an almost uncontrollable rage over what I feel are ridiculous things, really intolerable. It makes living with her very unpleasant. I’ll describe a recent and typical scenario.

Fran has recently shifted back from Bundaberg where she’s been working for the last year. In this instance she was putting her stuff away in her old bedroom, when she called me in to see if I could see her difficulty, which basically was that the room was too small. She had too much stuff, and the window, on a hot still day, does not provide much ventilation. To my mind, the room looked like a dump with all her junk piled everywhere.

After I listened to her, I applied as asked, I thought, logic to the situation, saying ‘Sort yourself out, store what you don’t need, organise your present stuff, and then when you’re tidy and organised, you won’t feel so hot and bothered, and you’ll have more room to position the fan properly et cetera.’

Well! She just went off again with ‘You’re not listening to me. You‘re not listening to me, you never do.’- et cetera. She really winds herself up and can become quite abusive. I try to show that I have listened by staying calm and repeating, word for word, what she has just said, and once again supplying a solution I thought she had asked for. This only makes her worse, and she keeps repeating the same tirade until I walk off and usually out of the house to get away from her until she‘s calmed down. What’s happening here? I can’t understand what she’s wanting of me.

Nola.

Dear Nola, I think ‘You’re not listening to me’ could roughly be translated as ‘You‘re not giving me the answer I want to hear.’ She hands her problem over to you, and when you can‘t fix it the way she wants, you get ‘You‘re not listening.’ Now there’s a pretty difficult piece of sub-text going on here that you have to read, and you‘re getting conned into trying to solve the unsolvable.

There are a few strategies that may be useful that I can think of.

If you haven’t already, I would try sitting down with her when she is calm, and discuss with her how she thinks her emotional reactivity helps her solve any of her problems. Ask her is this the effect she wants to have on her friends or family? Can she see the consequences of her reactivity? How will it help her

Counselling Corner solve any of the big issues in life that she is going to encounter as an adult if she continues to behave in any stressful situation in this way? Also ask her if she can see when she has calmed down (a) what it was she was wanting from you; (b) because you would like to be able to support her in her finding a solution if you can. But at the moment, and because of the way she chooses to deal with it, you are totally lost as to what it is she really wants. Can she help you with this problem?

Put it back on her. And a question for both of you is: Does she really know what she wants? Does she have a hidden agenda?

That is, in the present case, a bigger bedroom, maybe another family member’s. And she knows she can’t really have it. Is this the real origin of a lot of her reactivity? A refusal by her to accept the fact that she wants something that is neither appropriate nor possible to have at this point in time.

See if she is amenable to such self observation and when she is aware of her triggers, disciplining herself to make the choice to use her will to calm herself down (a) by slowing her breath; (b) relaxing the tension she’s building up in her body; and (c) using positive self-talk not to go into that space. It is important to stress that this is what she is choosing to think and do to herself, and then dump on others to try and get her own way. This needs to be said gently, not judgmentally, or blaming, simply pointing out that we have choices about how we behave and that there are outcoms to them. Would she like others behaving this way to her?

Also letting her know when you are talking things through, that you will no longer be willing to listen to or support her in any way if she continues to behave abusively. You will not be reinforcing such inappropriate and immature behaviour any longer. Make sure you stick to this whilst maintaining the calm that you have employed so well in the past. Robin.

Wildflowers, Wood Fossicking & Workshops An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club

The last field trip the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club held was on the 11th and 12th of September to the Chinchilla – Miles district to fossick for petrified wood and various other materials in the area.

On Saturday we concentrated in the Greenswamp Road area, which is only about 10 Kms from Chinchilla.

There are two fossicking areas here where you pay $5 a day to dig for wood etc. The payment is made at the Tourist Information Centre who will also give you directions to the digs.

On the Sunday, we travelled to Miles and further north. After a short time fossicking along the side of a dirt road, we headed off for the wildflower circuit through what is known as the Gurulnundi Wildflower Some of the beautiful trail. The wildflowers were wildflowers found on the recent at their peak, and along this field trip road, there were several sites where you could pull up and photograph the flowers. There were information signs and photos describing what each flowers name is.

We are fortunate to have such a display of wildflowers which are accessible so close to Brisbane at this time of the year.

Continuing along this road brings you out west of Drilham on the Warrego Highway, which is wheat growing country.

We will be busy over the coming months sawing and polishing our petrified wood and other material collected on our Club trip.

The club has reopened their workshop after the last Covid 19 lockdown. We are open on Thursday mornings 9am – 12noon and Saturday afternoon 1pm – 4pm with a limited number of four members who can attend each session.

Aspley Art Group (AAG) has a membership of local artists who choose to showcase and sell their original works to the public.

Their art works comprise of oils, watercolours and acrylic paintings. The AAG also supports the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

From the 11th to 24th October 2021, the AAG will be using a shop space, formerly a hairdressing salon, in the shopping centre located on Rode Road at McDowall for this show.

Do you want to try a slower placed outdoor activity - FOR FREE?!

Every Tuesday evening in October, from 6pm to 8pm, there will be FREE ‘Have-A-Go’ Lawn Bowl sessions at Gaythorne Bowls Club, Prospect Road, Gaythorne. The sessions are primarily aimed at people aged 50 and over, as this activity is included in the Brisbane City Council’s Active and Healthy Program. Booklets listing all activities in this program are available from all Brisbane City Council (BCC) Libraries, and can also be viewed on the BCC’s website.

Additionally, anyone outside this age group is also welcome to come along and try their hand at this sport. Yes, it is a sport, not fast paced like running or with heavy physical contact like football, but the same degree of skill levels are required in order to achieve high results. The majority of people seen on a bowls green will most likely always be in the older age bracket, but the majority of people seen competing in bowls competitions are in the younger age bracket. So, all age groups are covered for people playing bowls.

Bowls of old were always black and boring to look at with only a small differing picture on the side. However, now, bowls can be coloured as brightly as you like in swirls and other splashes of colours as complicated as the manufacturers can develop.

At the Gaythorne Bowls Club’s Have-A-Go sessions, you will be using the boring black bowls, but they are mostly of lighter weights for easier use and introduction to the game of bowls. If you come and like bowls and decide to get more involved with the game, then the colourful world of bowls will be at your fingertips.

See you every Tuesday evening at 6pm in October at Gaythorne Bowls Club. All you need to do is to wear enclosed flat soled shoes, as the greenkeeper likes to be the only person aerating the greens!

FIRIES V’s COPS

9/11 20th ANNIVERSARY RL CLASH I refereed 300 NRL games but none were tougher than the annual Cops v Firies rugby league clash.

This year commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9/11 where many police and firefighters lost their lives. This year the Firies got up 14-12 and it was great to have the game played locally at the South Pine Sporting Complex.

The year is going quickly, school is back for term four, winter sports are finished and many in our community are preparing for Christmas and end of year activities. It is also a time to catch up with family and friends and I am looking forward to seeing many of you at end of year functions, school graduations and other events in coming weeks.

As we approach Christmas, the Vaccine roll-out is moving ahead rapidly. We are getting close to reaching the targets laid out in the National Plan for reopening with more than 70% of Australians have had at least one dose of the vaccine.

At the time of writing, the National Cabinet is due to meet in coming days to determine the next steps for re-opening based on the latest advice.

Ferny Grove TOD Many of you will have seen work is now underway on the new Transit Orientated Development at Ferny Grove Train Station.

Fences are up and changed traffic conditions have been implemented to enable the construction of stage 1, the commuter carparking deck. Traffic control and management is currently in place and will be for the duration of the project.

There is also now a new access way between Archdale Rd and the Finger Car Park.

AUKUS will build on the three nations’ longstanding and ongoing bilateral ties, and will enable the partners to significantly deepen cooperation on a range of emerging security and defence capabilities. AUKUS is built on a firm foundation of shared values.

The first initiative under AUKUS is for Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarine technology, leveraging decades of experience from the US and UK. Nuclear-powered submarines do not have the same limitations that face conventional submarines on weapons storage, speed and endurance. They can stay completely submerged for many months, limiting the opportunities for detection by adversaries.

As a three-ocean nation, it is necessary for Australia to have access to the most capable submarine technology available.

Australia has no plans to acquire nuclear weapons and this proposal will remain consistent with Australia’s longstanding commitment to nuclear non-proliferation.

The Government’s intention is to build the nuclear-powered submarines in South Australia, maximising the use of Australian workers.

Reptile Day is on it’s Way

On the 21st of October, reptile owners all around celebrate and share their love of their scaly pets.

Reptile Awareness Day is created and designed to educate people on the wonders of reptiles, and to appreciate these amazing and unique creatures.

Reptiles are a diverse range of animals, characterised as cold-blooded – ectothermic – and basking in the sun. They are also covered in scaly skin or rigid plates called scutes, which shed as they grow.

Did you know, there are nearly 900 species of reptiles within Australia alone? Over 90% of those are endemic to our continent. They range from magnificent sea turtles, chunky crocodiles, playful bearded dragons, spectacular pythons, tiny geckoes, and colourful skinks. And many, many more species. Unfortunately, reptiles are also some of the most ‘forgotten’ species when it comes to care and husbandry within households. That’s why we must ensure the best and appropriate care for them to thrive, be happy and healthy! Schrinner Council opens the doors to its first women’s shed in Ferny Grove

The Shed comprises 12 workspaces and the Women’s Shed will access the area on Wednesdays and Thursday from 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm.

Since the announcement we’ve received overwhelming interest from women in the community. To become a member, applicants must complete an induction, a membership form and pay a joining and yearly membership fee.

Scone for Sunday

The first Women’s Shed was announced in June by the Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and I am very pleased that it will be located in The Gap Ward. What an opportunity for women looking to up-skill, socialise or gain confidence. The sspace provides for women from all backgrounds and ages to learn more about the timber and the tools and tricks of the trade!

This Women’s Shed is the first in Brisbane and has evolved from the Men’s Sheds which Council has supported since 2008. The Women’s Shed was allocated $50,000 is this year’s budget and is located at the Brisbane Tramway Museum in Ferny Grove which also houses the Men’s Shed. It’s equipped and ready to go with a range of timber and metal work power tools, welding and wood turning machines. No experience is required in metal or wood work, as with the support of the Men’s Shed members and talented women from the community. Almost 50 members have registered and are ready to get into the space and work on projects including home improvements, wood working, furniture repairs, hobbies, and craft.

Mark Sunday 7th November in your diary for our next outdoor event at the Yoorala Street Community Garden.

With the support of the Garden members and Karen Browne, owner of Come and Cook, a locally run kitchen business in The Gap, we are hosting ‘Scone Sunday’. The members of the garden will be conducting tours of the Garden and passing on their tips in growing seasonal fruit and vegetables.

We’ll be using ingredients from the garden and making sweet and savoury scones that will made and cooked onsite! Look forward to seeing you there!

An Op Shop for the Vets

The Veteran’s Op Shop at 29 Samford Road, Alderley opened in December 2020 and has successfully navigated through this pandemic to remain open and provide a valuable service not only to the veteran community, but also to the community at large. Proceeds from the Veteran’s Op Shop are directed to help Wo u n d e d H e r o e s provide vital financial and housing support to veterans and their families in crisis.

The Op Shop has been a huge success since its inception with shoppers coming from far and wide to snag a bargain! Their shop motto is ‘We have a treasure for all - your job is to find it!’

The shop is open from Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm, so pop in and have a browse!

Gardening

A Hive of Activity is Underway at HOG

From The Hills Organic Garden Community Spring is here and the weather is warming up. A good drop of rain would be wonderful for our garden and hopefully this will not be too far away.

Our snow peas have produced very well over the last couple of months but are almost at the end of production. When the plants die back they will be cut up and placed in our compost bay.

We are just starting to pick our broadbeans from the first crop we planted in May and we have a backup crop which is growing steadily and flowering well. The bees love the flowers on the broadbeans and it is great to see them busily flying about the garden. They also love the basil which is still flowering and will be ready for seed collecting once they dry out.

Our potato plants are gradually dying back which means they are ready to be dug and hopefully we will get a nice lot of potatoes to share amongst our members. The sweet potatoes are also starting to produce. We have just planted some Lebanese cucumbers and a couple of passionfruit plants as well as some rosella plants. We look forward to some very tasty jam when they start producing.

How to Become a Tech Savvy Senior

Senior’s Month is being held during October and this is when all seniors are given the chance to show their achievements to the general community.

Furthermore, Get Online week is also taking place from the 18th to the 24th October. Get Online week is an international digital inclusion campaign organised by Good Things Foundation. Last year, over 700 community organisations around Australia held a Get Online Week event, helping people with limited digital skills get more out of life online.

To celebrate this, The Hills & District Chamber of Commerce Senior Committee, together with the Older Woman’s Network Queensland Mitchelton (OWNQ) is organising a lunch, for the senior members of our community.

The lunch will take place on Thursday 21st October 2021 at the Arana Leagues Club from noon to 2pm. Transport can be taken by the Arana Leagues Courtesy Bus if required. There will be a Smorgbasboard and the cost is $20. The guest speaker at the event will be Brian Battersby OAM, a retired Moreton Bay Regional Councillor who will chat about ‘Seniors Learning Technology’.

If you are over 65 and feeling like meeting other fellow seniors, come and enjoy lunch with us. You do not have to be a techno wiz as technology is at all levels of our ability.

This is just one of many initiatives to come that are a result of The Seniors Committee of The Hills and Districts Chamber of Commerce Inc and the OWNQ Mitchelton branch combining their efforts. This joint venture between the two organisations will address the needs of older people, including dealing with isolation, giving seniors a voice, strengthening confidence and ability to engage within the community.

More live events are in the pipeline and there will also be workshops offering an introduction to the Be Connected website and tools, and offering tips on how to safely connect with others using technology. The joint venture will also seek to engage with other like minded organisations to achieve their goals. A team of technology support people will be developed to assist seniors with basic technology devices, including phones, laptops, computers and tablets/pads etc.
