‘Friends of Hungerford Farm’ Unite to Save its Future

One of Mitchelton's last remaining farmlands may soon disappear with a development application (D.A.) lodged earlier this year to Brisbane City Council by the Uniting Church to put 92 housing lots on the land. The 25-hectare property planned for development is affectionately known to Mitchelton residents as Hungerford’s Farm and is located at 76 Kooya Road, Mitchelton. This farm has been owned by the Hungerford family since the early 1900’s. However, in 2020, following the death of Greg Hungerford, the Uniting Church acquired the land for $3.5 million.

Since the D.A. has been lodged, there has been much concern amongst residents about this development. Many who knew the late Greg Hungerford, would also have known his wishes were for this land to be left to the community for recreational purposes, and for it to never be developed into housing. Aside from the ethical issues many residents have over the purchase of the land, if approved, it is anticipated that the development will introduce many problems for the residents in Mitchelton. Some issues include flooding to new and existing properties, lack of usable parking space for the community, disrupting the Kedron Brook water flow and destroying native tree and animal species in the area, to name but a few. Residents have also made concerns regarding the development's potential lack of compliance with the Mitchelton Neighbourhood Plan. The community has formed a community group ‘Friends of Hungerford Farm’ which aims to stop or minimise the development so that the space can be put to better use for

the whole community. A spokesperson for the group has expressed their frustration with the lack of community consultation surrounding the development.

‘There is a huge opportunity for the Uniting Church to work with the community to create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable environment for new residents to live in whilst accommodating the

The beautiful Hungerford Farm as it is today. needs of the existing community and the significant native flora and fauna,” explained the Spokesperson.

‘Residents are disappointed that the Uniting Church has made no attempt to consult with the community throughout their planning process.’

The Uniting Church has since met with the community, but no further changes to the D.A. have been made at the time of going to press. New look in store for local RSL

Take A Bow

An update from The Hills Players Community Theatre Group

The Hills Players latest ‘Disfunctional’ production, proved to be a whole lot of fun with their audience being thoroughly entertained!

The group was confident the plays were entertaining, but they never quite know how the performance will be received until they perform live. That’s the beauty and mystery of live theatre. By all reports, the audience really enjoyed the plays, which is always the ultimate aim.

Each of the five plays brought something a little different to the stage. Deception, introspection, frustration, humour, and of course a healthy dose of disfunction.

An artists impression of the proposed new look for the Gaythorne RSL

The Gaythorne RSL will soon be sporting a trendy new look with a development application being lodged for an internal refurbishment, external facade amendments and an extension for the existing building.

The Gaythorne RSL, located at 534 Samford Road, Mitchelton is a popular spot for dining and gathering and has become busier than ever over the past few years. Other changes in the development application include; relocating the existing memorial to the southern entrance, new landscaping throughout and a reduction to 110 pokie machines.

Designed by Altis Architects, the proposed improvements are designed to meet the growing needs of the club and provide improved options for club members.

There is of course a lot of work required in the lead up and on the night of the performances. The Hill Players would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the production the success that it was; from front of house, sound and lighting, backstage managers to prompts, every role is integral to ensuring things run smoothly. Special thanks to our patron Tim Mander Member for Everton for the donation of the bountiful hamper. Our most heartfelt thanks goes to the audiences, their continued support makes it all worthwhile.

The group, looks forward to their next production, watch this space for future updates. In the meantime, The Hills Players will be holding their annual Trivia night, always a great evening.

So, stay tuned for more information in the next edition, or check-out the Hills Players Facebook page.

A Drive For Independence

Learning to drive is something many of us take for granted, however for the young parents in our community this luxury can simply be too far out of reach.

These days, a single driving lesson costs around $90 and the driving test costs on average $75. So to even apply for a Learner’s licence can be several hundreds of dollars that the young parents simply don’t have when preparing for a baby. This is where Encircle Community Service’s Young Parents Program (YPP) is making a difference. Now in its 35th year, Encircle Community Service’s YPP offers group antenatal education, peer support connections, and referrals to relevant services for pregnant and parenting families from Greater North Brisbane.

According to YPP Senior Practitioner, Talitha Eckermann, the biggest issues for young parents are the cost of living, social isolation, affordable and stable housing, domestic and family violence, and access to adequate, affordable and timely mental health support.

Ms Eckermann said there is an immediate need for financial support to help young parents in the program gain their drivers licence, and is inviting expressions of interest from local businesses and organisations.

‘With cost of living skyrocketing for our young parents, many are navigating public transport to save money, but are struggling with inconvenient timetables and routes to get to their destinations, and the logistics of carrying baby capsules, prams and nappy bags, or being heavily pregnant across multiple modes of transport,’ she said.

‘Our young parents want and need the independence that comes with the ability to drive to hospitals, appointments, mothers’ groups, child health appointments, employment, study and other community services and facilities, but face numerous financial hurdles with obtaining their licence.’

Encircle Community is putting the call out to our community in order to seek support to help vulnerable young mothers obtain their licence for greater independence and convenience.

The program has recently moved from Stafford Road to the heritage-listed premises at 12 Emerald Street, Kedron. It is open now with its official launched planned for September where YPP will continue to deliver programs that support young parents, help build peer connections, and provide information from a variety of services including midwives and child health nurses.

To provide financial support for the program’s independent transport drive, interested organisations can contact Talitha Eckermann on 0420 794 527 or talithae@encircle.org.au

Remember to Recycle

Did you know that only 50% of mixed recyclables are being placed into yellow lid bins? This means the other half is currently being disposed to general waste bins (25,000 tonnes per annum) and ends up in landfill. To make our region more sustainable ensure all accepted items are effectively sorted and disposed in your yellow lid bin.

A Roaring Success For Red Ride

A sea of red rode through the streets of the Moreton Bay Region on Saturday May 20, raising awareness for domestic violence.

More than 200 bikes took part in the Moreton Bay Red Ride covering about 184km of road from Caboolture out to Redcliffe, down to Strathpine, across to Dayboro and then on to Woodford and Beerburrum before finishing back in Caboolture at the showground. An afternoon of festivities followed with a show and shine featuring 20 cars, loads of fun and entertainment for all family members.

A beautiful day of fine, sunny weather set the scene for an event that was all about turning heads. Red Ride committee member Randall Macey was grateful for the sunshine and positive feedback they received about the ride.

‘It was a great day, full of red which is what we wanted to see,’ he says. ‘The weather was awesome. When I woke up that morning, I rode out there at 530am to help start the set up and to see the sun coming up was the best view. ’

‘It’s everything – the planning and behind the scenes stressing – it’s all worth it to see the smiles on people’s faces as the ride takes place. We actually had one lady that started tearing up because she realised what the event was for. So when you get people out in the community talking to you and actually recognising this is all about a good cause, it makes it so worth it.’

All too often now we hear about domestic related incidents happening to families out there and the Red Ride is all about trying to combat it from happening.

‘We can’t save everybody,’ Randall says. ‘As much as you

want to help everybody and give them all the money, you just can’t. But if you can save say 10% out there, that’s 10% more getting the help they need.

‘We’re just our best to get the awareness out there and then hope at some stage, it will all become preventable.’

Creating awareness is a big focus of the Red Ride with participants encouraged to wear red or even add the flag featuring the event emblem to their bike. All funds raised from the day will be donated to organisations that provide services and support to victims of domestic violence.

For Randall, doing his part to make his bike stand out was up there as his favourite part of the day.

‘Setting up my bike and having people looking at it was just the best part of it for me,’ Randall says. ‘I had a big flag on the back and another small flag at the front, along with a fair bit of red ribbon all the way around it…I wanted it to stand out. And then riding it, that was pretty special too.’

Planning is already underway for the next Red Ride to be held on May 18 next year, with members of the community already putting their hands up to take part. But none of it would be possible without the contributions of the many volunteers and sponsors.

‘Planning an event of this size takes quite a lot of combined effort,” Randall says. “There’s a lot of people involved in the background and a lot of unsung heroes. For everyone who helped out and did their bit, whether it was volunteering, sponsorship or riding in the event itself, thank you so much!’ For further information about the Red Ride, please visit www. redride.org

Resilience Expo, Far From A Disaster

An update from the Picabeen Community Centre

In the gorgeous sunshine of Saturday 20th May, Picabeen Community Centre organised a Community Disaster Resilience Expo at George Willmore Park. The expo saw hundreds of local residents, emergency services and various organisations come together to connect and learn about disaster preparedness and recovery. Some of the event highlights included: a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony from Uncle Alex, wholesome performances by the Ferny Groovers, Sweet Freedom Singers and Bring a Plate Dance Crew and an engaging science show explaining weather and natural disasters. The kids were thoroughly entertained with activities including; a minfulness craft mat, giant natural disaster snakes and ladders and had they all scored take home packs with torches, disaster directories, emergency kits, and supportive resources. However, the highlight for the kids (and adults!) it seemed was the opportunity to meet firefighters, police officers, SES volunteers and first aiders. And let's not forget the delectable burgers, desserts, and coffee from local caterers that were devoured!

Picabeen thanks the Brisbane North PHN for their funding support that made the event possible. We believe that wellconnected and well-prepared communities are resilient communities. If you’d like more information and support in preparing for severe weather or forming better connections in the community, please contact Picabeen on 3354 2555.

Cake Show Coaching in Full Swing

An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators

Preparations are in full swing at Brisbane North Cake Decorators HQ for the Annual Cake Show taking place in September at Upper Coomera.

At the recent May meeting, members enjoyed a demonstration by Robyn who showed the group how to create articles for their displays. The group look forward to putting this knowledge gained into practice and will create some of these articles at the June workshop.

The Brisbane North Cake Decorators were also delighted to surprise Fay, one of their longest serving members, with a Life Membership of their branch. She was thrilled, if a little shocked by the honour, and was presented with a bunch of flowers and her badge.

Bowling Out A New Menu

Mouth-watering Lamb Rump, Sri Lankan Curry, and Crispy Pork Belly Salad —these are just three of the spectacular meals you will find at the Ferny Grove Bowls Club these days. And just wait until you see the rest of the menu!

Upon the previous caterer leaving, the Ferny Grove Bowls Club decided to take charge of the restaurant themselves, and with Head Chef Roshan at the helm they haven’t looked back. Although only 23 years of age, Nepalise born Roshan has a wealth of experience and culinary wisdom at his fingertips.

After completing his studies at the Queensford College Brisbane City in Commercial Cookery, along with gaining an Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management, Roshan kickstarted his career—and fine-tuned his impeccable skillsets—at a variety of accoladed restaurants including Spicers Retreat, Sous Chef Industry Bins - experience many a chef can only dream of.

However, lucky for us, Roshan has now found home at the Ferny Grove Bowls Club and with a team of 4 behind him, the crew are whipping up mouth-watering delights with their Modern Australian cuisine. Using only the freshest of ingredients and locally sourced produce, the menu has been welcomed by the community and also encompasses your typical “Bowlsy” delights including a kids menu, seniors specials and regular evening specials.

All that being said, the Ferny Grove kitchen certainly knows how to make your experience one to remember. Whether it’s a wedding, a work function, or simply a family breakfast, the team will ensure you leave with a smile on your face and a happy food baby beneath your belt with custom menus tailored

to your requirements. And things don’t get mundane at the club with the menu being ‘changed up’ every quarter to offer the community variety throughout our seasons. So, what are we waiting for, Brisbane locals? Come on down to the Ferny Grove Bowls and Community Club to get amongst the action!

The Ferny Grove Bowls Club is located at 20 Tramway Street, Ferny Grove. The restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday from noon to 2pm for lunch and from 5.30pm to 8pm for dinner. Sundays operate on a lunch only basis from noon to 3pm. To make a booking, call 07 3851 1889. Takeaway and catering also available.

Master Your Fear Of Public Speaking

Like many of us, you have probably found speaking in front of an audience terrifying.

Jerry Seinfeld, famously said, ‘According to most studies, people’s number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.’ If this is you, there is a way to overcome this fear.

The answer is Toastmasters.

Toastmasters can be rewarding, challenging, educational, exciting and a great way to meet and make new friends. Stafford Heights Toastmasters (SHTM) is all this and more. Their club was formed in October 1982 and last year they celebrated the clubs 40th anniversary. Since then, they have helped many members, both past and present, to become more confident public speakers. The club promotes ‘hands on’ experience, or ‘learning by doing’. Toastmasters have found that this is the only way to improve listening, thinking and speaking skills. Toastmasters promotes better communication, a skill that can be used by every person in his or her daily life. SHTM has members from diverse cultural backgrounds and has a wonderful mix of youth and experience. The club welcomes all people over the age of 18 years. Although education is our prime objective, SHTM, like all Toastmasters Clubs is organised not as a class but as a club. A Toastmasters club format is not a formal course in public speaking. It is an ongoing series of experiences that will directly involve you in a variety of communication situations.

Benefits of Toastmasters

3 Gain self-confidence and self-awareness

3 Improve your public speaking skills

3 Build leadership skills

3 Practice writing speeches and presenting in a group setting

3 Receive regular and constructive feedback

If public speaking is a skill you want to improve or you know someone who could benefit from this, then please contact the club via the details below.

Swagman Arrives at the Bowls Club

An update from the Gaythorne Bowls Club

The cooler months are here but the temperatures seem higher than in previous years with the rainfall increasing in the last few weeks. Both of these things make the greens greener and the bowlers happier at Gaythorne Bowls Club.

The past month has been a busy one for the club as we welcome Swagman Spit Roast as our new caterer. Now Friday night meals and takeaway, will be available as well as function catering when the club’s facilities are hired for those special occasions, work functions, meetings or social get togethers. Shinae and Cameron are the new faces in the kitchen, so come along and have a relaxed evening meal with family and friends. Meals are available between 5pm and 8pm but you can stay later if you like. Families with young children are always welcome with kids meals on the menu and all at very reasonable prices.

Did you know the club has an old style jukebox that you can use to play some of your old favourites to listen to and maybe even dance to on the polished timber dance floor. The club house was built in the early 50’s and still retains that old world charm making for a great alternative to all the glitz and glamour of so many other venues in our area.

Gaythorne Bowls Club held a fundraising day for Stuart Gorton at the club in early April. The event was a great success. A necklace was also made and donated by a club member, Meg Olssen, and this was the raffle prize to also help raise funds for Stuart to attend the World Special Olympics in Germany later this year. Gaythorne Bowls Club would like to thank everyone who attended the fundraising day and would also

Get ready for the next installment of tremendous theatre from local community group Growl Theatre. The group are busy in rehearsals for their next production, ‘Rope’ by Patrick Hamilton, directed by Brendan James & Charles Langford . Here is a quick synopsis of what is in store: A brilliantly tense play from Patrick Hamilton, the author of Gaslight, which was performed by Growl Theatre in 2022. Believing themselves to be intellectually superior to their contemporaries, two flatmates murder their friend purely to see if they can get away with it. They then throw a cocktail party, serving food from the top of the trunk where they have hidden his body. Tension and suspicions increase as the evening wears on.

The show hits the stage on the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th, 9th, 14th and 15th July 2023. Shows commence at 7.30pm on the Friday and Saturday evenings, with Matinee shows starting at 2pm. The play will take place at the Windsor School of Arts, 381 Lutwyche Road, Windsor. Tickets are $20 for an Adult, $17 for a concession and $15 for groups of 6+. Tickets can be reserved online www.growltheatre.org.au or email boxoffice@ growltheatre.org.au

Creativity at every turn on the Arts Trail

Weeds: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

The last few weeks have been a busy time for executive members of The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club which participated in The Twilight Years Expo at Arana Hills.

Local art is a prominent feature once again in this year’s Samford and Surrounds Arts Trails. This popular event, organised by Creative Samford Inc., will be held in and around Samford during the first four weekends in June with some studios and art spaces open from Wednesday to Sunday. Fifty artists, across 20 studios are participating in the trail, with their studios open from 10am to 4pm daily over these four weekends. Visitors will be treated to a wide variety of arts and interesting places to visit, in the beautiful Samford District and surrounds. Artists will open their studios so visitors can learn about their making process, view and purchase the art. This year, studios are open from Samford to Cashmere, Clear Mountain, Yugar and out to Dayboro.

The Studio Guide, and photos of the People’s Choice entries, will be available for viewing on the Creative Samford website www.creativesamford.com

Also, at the June meeting a farewell function was held for Pat Killoran who retired from the club towards the end of 2022. Pat, apart from being president several other times, has recently served continuously as president for almost twelve years. Her club membership covers well over fifty-five years, and she is wished peace, good health, and happiness.

The next Garden Club meeting at the Enoggera Memorial Hall is on Thursday, 6th July. The guest speaker, Helen Rattenburg‘s topic is Good/Bad Weeds in the Garden. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, the definition of a weed is a plant considered undesirable, unattractive and troublesome, especially one that grows where it is not wanted and spreads quickly! There’s a saying - One year’s seed, seven years, weeds. How true it is! One such weed is the Dandelion, but its herbal qualities are beneficial for good health too. Some others are Clover, Onion Weed, Oxalis. etc. Attend this meeting to see what Helen has to say. Visitors and new members are most welcome and admission is $3 with morning tea provided from 9.15am. The meeting commences approx. 10am. More information is on Facebook @mitcheltongardenclub

Hayley Grant

Meet Hayley Grant, founder of HMG Home Loans

based in beautiful Samford.

Upon finishing high school in 1995, Hayley had big dreams of joining the police force and began studies to make this a reality.

Whilst studying, Hayley started a part time job with Suncorp Bank and soon became a revered member of the team impressing each and every executive as she climbed the corporate ladder. Ultimately, this saw Hayley becoming a Lending Manager at Chermside - one of Suncorp's busiest branches in Brisbane. This was the beginning of an unforeseen career in finance.

After 15 years with Suncorp, and many national awards as a Lending Manager, she took a massive leap (along with many sleepless nights) and started her own company - HMG Home Loans. She was 32, single and had just purchased a home in Hamilton. Talk about pressure! It was the unknown, the lack of a stable income (and only income) and starting a business from scratch.

In her first year as a Mortgage Broker, Hayley won the 'New Broker of the Year' award at a national conference. This was to be the start of many award recognitions for the hard work she has put into establishing and running this successful business solo.

Fast forward to 2023, Hayley is a mother of two, Charlotte (8) and Cooper (5). She continues to run her business full time from home and is actively involved in the kids’ school and the local community. She was recently recognised for these efforts and awarded the Peter Dutton 2023 Dickson Community Service Award on Australia Day. After 28 years in finance, Hayley still loves what she does and derives joy and satisfaction from helping clients achieve their financial goals whilst guiding them along the way. Community Musicality Comes To Brisbane’s Northside

Are you looking to develop your musical skills in a fun and social environment? If so, consider joining the Second Wind Community Band based on Brisbane’s Northside.

The band was established in July 1998 and now has over 80 members from a wide demographic. They provide live musical entertainment to a variety of events, and encourage members to develop their musical skills through rehearsals, weekend workshops, and performances. Members are committed to the continued improvement in their own playing, whilst, at the same time, assisting others and being part of the many social activities the band stages throughout the year.

The Second Wind Band was originally established through the Adult Starters Program to improve members’ musical skills. However, over many years, it has developed into a community focused organisation that aims to provide musical enjoyment and entertainment to the southeast Queensland community. There are five established ensembles;

Concert Band: a mix of brass, wind and percussion instruments.

Big Band: an auditioned group consisting of brass, woodwind and rhythm section.

Intermezzo: a woodwind and brass ensemble.

Second Wind Voices: our singing group.

New Beginnings: until players are ready to join one of the above groups.

The group are encouraging the community to pop along and either join in or just have look and a listen to see if what they do is right for you. Rehearsal times and venues are as follows;

Thursday nights at the Everton Park Bowls Club, 7 Gearside

St, Everton Park. Big Band: 6pm - 7.15pm, Concert Band: 7.45pm to 9.15pm, New Beginnings: 7.45 to 9pm.

THE FERNY REPORT

New hall for Oakleigh State School

Last month I had the very great pleasure to join with Oakleigh State School leaders Harper Ackland, Tadgh Jaffrey, Emily O’Brien, Charlotte Effeney, and the Oakleigh School team to turn the first sod on the new hall.

Oakleigh alumni have told me the school has been working towards building a hall since the early 1950s! In 2020 I promised the Oakleigh community that a re-elected Palaszczuk Government would build the long-awaited hall and now we are delivering on that promise. Construction is expected to commence shortly.

Construction update for Mitchie Special School

Also, recently Mitchie Special School Principal Sheldon Hooper invited me to inspect the progress of the construction of their new facilities. At over fifty years of age, Mitchie Special School was badly in need of an upgrade – and the Palaszczuk Government is delivering that upgrade for some of the most vulnerable students in our community. The new learning site will include specialty classrooms, breakout areas, amenities, and a new admin and staff area. The project is due to be completed later this year.

School Tours

In the past month many of the schools in the Ferny Grove Electorate sent leaders to tour Queensland Parliament. The questions the student leaders asked were informed and insightful. I am always inspired by the attentiveness and interest of our local students and am inspired by their determination to build the future.

Reviewing your goals for 2023? Looking for a group of inspiring, motivating and energetic individuals? Come join the Run With Rob running group at Eatons Hill, Ferny Hills or Warner. We guarantee it will be life changing and just the motivation you need to kick start 2023.

Suitable for ALL ability levels. Our no cost sessions will change your life.

Thank you to Oakleigh State School leaders Harper Ackland, Tadgh Jaffrey, Emily O’Brien, Charlotte Effeney for helping me turn the first sod on their new school hall!

Active Clubs Grants

The latest round of the Active Clubs program has delivered $30,000 to twelve local clubs as part of the Queensland Government’s 10-year strategy to further enrich the Queensland way of life and build on our strong community foundations to deliver better health and well-being outcomes for all Queenslanders.

The grants provided will fund local sport and active recreation organisations and will support volunteers and provide opportunities to increase participation.

Youth Crime Epidemic

Ceremonies

Enough is enough. How many more tragedies have to occur before the Palaszczuk Government implements real reform to combat the youth crime crisis tearing our State apart. Unfortunately, our district has not been immune from the youth crime crisis that has gripped our state.

I’ve had a number of local residents come to my office to personally communicate the ordeal their families endured as victims of young criminals. Properties being broken into, cars and valuables stolen and in one incident, the offending youths returning on three occasions, the last time armed with a tomahawk to bash the front door in! These crimes have not only cost the victims thousands of dollars in damages, their trauma, as a result of these home invasions, is real and ongoing. There must be consequences for actions, detention as a last resort must be removed and we need gold standard early intervention that diverts young offenders away from a life of crime.

Winner of Colour Run

Albany Creek State School celebrated the end of the first Term with their annual Colour Run. I couldn’t resist joining in the fun armed with a super water pistol! It was an additional honour to donate a bike for the winner of the Colour Run Raffle and present it to her on assembly. Congratulations Ellie!!!

Anzac Day is our national day of remembrance to honour those who have fought for our freedom, and I am always moved and grateful to be included and participate in many of the Anzac Ceremonies across the Everton Electorate. It is always an honour to be invited and I truly appreciate the importance of these events in our community. I find it encouraging to see so many of our local schools and sporting clubs participating.

Senior School Leader’s Lunch at Parliament House

This month I had the pleasure of welcoming the senior school leaders from Prince of Peace College and Northside Christian College to Parliament house for a tour and lunch. It is always interesting and refreshing to listen to the younger generations’ views on tackling some of today’s issues.

Celebrating Major Milestones In Our Community

An update from Cr Andrew Wines, Enoggera Ward

A decade of SAM signs

In May, the Lord Mayor and I celebrated Speed Awareness Monitors (SAMs) with Newmarket State School. The first sign was installed a decade ago to encourage motorists to reduce speeds. As a motorist approaches the sign, their speed is detected by a radar, and a smiley face will appear if they're driving at or below the speed limit.

After almost 10 years in operation and 1 billion trips, SAMs are one of Council's most successful road safety programs to date. By raising awareness of speed limits, we hope motorists reduce their speeds, get home safely, and keep SAM smiling!

The first sign was installed on Banks Street, Alderley, and now:

• One billion motorists have passed SAMs

• Speeding motorists slow down by an average of 7.5km/h

• Currently 190 monitors rotating across 894 locations across the city

• Currently 83 permanent School SAMs

• Program started in 2013 with 26 signs

Find out more about the program on Council’s website. Visit brisbane.qld.gov.au and search ‘SAM signs’.

Enoggera Memorial Park clubhouse upgrade complete

I was delighted to visit Enoggera Memorial Park last month to celebrate the official opening of the new clubhouse and canteen. Council was happy to partner with the Everton Districts Sporting Club by making a significant financial

contribution to the works. The club here is a key community association who have been growing and improving, and these upgraded facilities will make it even better. This park at the end of Mott Street, Gaythorne is home to the Everton Wolves, Mayne Tigers, and Ashgrove Cricket Club.

Celebrating 30 years of St Vincent’s Care on Church Road

This year St Vincent’s Care on Church Road, Mitchelton celebrated 30 years of caring for older and vulnerable people in our North Western community. The occasion included a liturgy and morning tea. It was an excellent way for the current St Vincent’s residents to recognise the longevity of this great centre.

Champion Bowlers

Ladies Striking Out in the Premier League

An update from Mitchelton Football Club

Brisbane District Bowls Association, Division 2 winners of the State District Sides Championship

Earlier in May, Bowls Queensland conducted the State District Sides Championship on the Sunshine Coast.

Men’s games were held at Coolum and Tewantin-Noosa Bowls Clubs. Ladies’ games were staged at Club Maroochy and Club Kawana.

Teams came from throughout Queensland – Far West (Mt Isa), Bundaberg, Fraser Coast, Downs, etc. – each embracing players from different clubs to represent their district. The first three days were devoted to Sectional play. Each team played three games daily, making for some very tired players at week end. Saturday was Final Day. The top four teams formed Division 1, the next best four teams became Division 2, and so down to Division 5.

Brisbane District entered both a men’s and ladies’ team. The Ladies’ team finished third in the Division 3 final. The men’s team enjoyed considerable success by gaining entry into Division 2 (missing Div 1 by only 2 points), and winning all three final games. Winning Division 2 in the state title, earns Brisbane District bragging rights with only four teams ranked above them in the state.

Its been a busy month for Mitchelton Football Club with the National Premier League Women’s (NPLW) team playing Peninsula Power FC at the home grounds of Teralba Park on Sunday 30th April.

The home ground advantage did not help Mitchie as they went down 5 – 3 to the Power in an entertaining game. Mitchie missed an opportunity to level the game three all midway through the second half, as Power made the most of their chances and took all three points. The rivalry between the two clubs builds after last year’s win. Some say this was unexpected, by Mitchie in the FQPLW’s grand final against Power.

The two teams were promoted to the NPLW competition this year. The team led by Katie McDonald put up spirited effort in a physical match. Emilie Adams performed well in goals weathering some strong challenges from the opposition and Kallie Peurifoy scored with a rocket off a free kick.

If you are free on Saturday or Sunday, why not pop down to Teralba Park and give the Mitchie Mustangs some support. Fixtures and more information can be found on their website www.mitchiefc.org.au

Camaraderie in Bocce Comp

An update from the Newmarket Bocce Club by Mario de Marco

There is nothing more satisfying like getting 20 bocce member players for a friendly competition.

On the 17th May we played a precision bowl competition at the club. Six teams played four games and as always it comes down to the last game to decide the winner.

So, each team has 8 bocce balls and they are played into a set of rings drawn on the courts. So the inner ring is worth 10 points, then 5, 3 and 1 point. Get the idea. You add the points after completion of the teams play and that is the teams score. Add all the points after 4 games and you get the podium standing.

We had a great time, but not before we all enjoyed a great dinner, throw down a little vino and coffee and the rest is history.

Remember there are no losers in bocce, we are all winners. Want to know more? Please call Mario 0403 257 325, Tony 0418 731 423 or Bill 0431 458 481 for more information or details.

State-of-the-art BMX track off and racing

Racing Round The Tracks

BMX'ers can rejoice with the official opening of one of the best BMX racing tracks in Australia at Nolan Park, Brendale, taking place last month. This new facility and clubhouse has been delivered to a standard capable of hosting national-level events and competitions. With BMX racing rapidly growing in popularity in Australia since it was introduced to the Beijing Olympics in 2008, this track is certain to be a focal point ahead of the 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

*Please note: Residents are required to be a Pine Rivers BMX Club member to use the track at Nolan Park.

From Albany Creek To Australian A Team

Jade, who is an Albany Creek local is one of the club’s premier players in league 1. Arana Ascot could not be prouder of their player as she joined the Australian team that features a selection of Australia’s best emerging women’s hockey talent. The games took place on the 25th and 27th May at MATE Stadium in Adelaide with Australia winning 3-2 in game one and India winning 2-1 in game two. Again well done Jade, the local community and your club are so proud!

With the hotter days easing, the Mountain Trail Bike (MTB) racing season is under way. The North Brisbane MTB Club has representatives racing in many disciplines including Downhill, Gravity Enduro and Cross Country.

Downhill Report

The first round of the Boomerang Farm Down Hill Series was run on the 30th April with a record turnout of 206 riders from all over the state, including 3 riders from the North Brisbane Dirt Dogs. Tom Stutz in U15, Allick Tierney in U17 and Craig Collins in over 50’s age group. The course was fast and challenging with large drops, big gap jumps and ruthless rock gardens. Practice was very tricky due to overnight rain making some of the sections very slippery with a few riders coming to grief, thankfully nobody was seriously hurt. The course was running very well by the time race runs were called. Craig was

A race report from the North Brisbane Mountain Bike Club riding smooth and finished 11th. Tom pushed hard and came away with 5th out of 30 riders. Allick scorched his way down the track finishing 2nd out of a huge 50 rider field. With the racing season in full swing a few club riders made the journey to Cairns for Crankworx where Tom Stutz brought home the gold medal in u15 Downhill!

Gravity Enduro Report

The second Round of the Rocky Trails Fox Superflow was held at Toowoomba on some very technical and rocky trails, it saw ten club members compete in various categories. Allick Tierney, Ben Malatzky and Julieanne White secured podium positions in their categories, whilst Craig Collins and Rohan Coyle worked hard to finish in the top 10 for their categories. Special thank you goes out to the Ditchburn Family who put in a massive effort on the day, setting up and packing up the clubs tent and pit area, in addition to the full day of racing.

Cross Country
