Ferny Grove TOD right on track

Construction on Ferny Grove Railway Station’s Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is one step closer, after receiving sign off from the Queensland Government.

Member for Ferny Grove Mark Furner said the Ferny Grove TOD would positively transform the local community.

‘The station’s value to the community will be enhanced beyond the single-level car park and train platform it is today,’ Mr Furner said.

‘Once built the TOD will offer eight cinemas, multiple dining options, a supermarket, retail spaces and a residential development. Jobs in both the construction and ongoing retail phases will provide a great boost to the local economy.’

‘The Palaszczuk Government has committed to funding 253 exclusive commuter car spaces for the project, at a cost of $9 million.’

Mr Furner said the governmentfunded car spaces will be in addition to over 300 car spaces provided for residential, retail and cinema customers, taking the total car spaces to more than 1500 once construction is complete.

‘As well as the greater availability of car parks, the ability to combine retail with travel will be of enormous convenience for time-poor commuters.’

Queensland’s own Honeycombes Property Group were selected as the preferred developer to undertake the $100 million project, following a competitive tender process.

Mr Furner said Honeycombes will now start a detailed design and approval process which will take place over the next 12 to 18 months.

Work is expected to commence in 2018 and the community will be continually updated about this important project throughout the development process.

2017 BIG Breakfast

The 2017 Hills Chamber of Commerce 25th Anniversary Big Breakfast went off with a bang on the 13th September.

Almost 290 local business people, community groups, high school students and MP’s attended to mark this milestone for the Hills Chamber of Commerce at the Eatons Hill Hotel.

It is anticipated more than $15,000 will be raised from this fantastic annual event for local charities.

The guest speaker on the day was John Buchanan who coached the Australian cricket team from 1999-2007.

Champion Gardens in The Hills

The 2017 Hills District and Bunya Garden Competition has been judged. This is the 49th year of this competition which is run in Ferny Hills, Everton Hills, Arana Hills and the Bunya area.

Judging was independently done by Noel and Heather Prior who are members of the Australian Horticultural Judges Association.

Entries were down this year due to the tough weather conditions and no rain. However for our small competition we still managed three new entries in amongst our 14 entrants. We look forward to seeing many more in our 50th year in 2018.

Sponsorship was wonderful once again from our many and varied businesses that supported us and our gardeners who will receive all of their vouchers and goods. For the gardeners’ free entry, it’s not a bad return for doing something you love.

Our grand champion this year came from Arana Hills.

Kaye & Norm Williams entered our garden competition for the first time last year and received a first in New Entry garden and third in Residential garden. This year with their First in Residential Gardens (both front & back yard gardens) the judges’ points put them in as the overall winner.

All of our entrants put in huge efforts to not only get their gardens ready for our competition but for their own

enjoyment. There is nothing better than sitting back at the end of the day and enjoying the fruits of your labour.

Plus it continues the theme of why the garden competition started 49 years ago with its view to beautify the area.

Arana Netball Winner

‘Positive Or It’s Pointless Award’

Anna Bardini was the worthy recipient of Arana Netball Club’s 2017 Positive Or It’s Pointless Trophy, announced at presentation night in early September.

This award, as the name suggests, is for good sportsmanship and a positive approach to playing sport. The award is covered by a donation from the Hills Echo each year, and so is able to include a sports shop voucher along with the trophy, to assist the recipient a little as she continues in her chosen sport of netball.

As distinct from the Club’s senior sportsmanship award, the Hills Echo Positive Or It’s Pointless Award is restricted to junior players. Anna, as this year’s recipient, was singled out by her coach, Julie, and choosing Anna was endorsed by Committee personnel as they considered the most worthy player for the award. This year Anna played in Arana 7, Division 4, where the team moved into the semi-finals. Anna has been playing netball for six years, and we wish her all the very best as a role model as she continues to play sport.

Arana Netball Club once again thanks the Hills Echo very sincerely for their generosity in helping junior sport in the local area with this annual donation.

Mitchelton Garden Club On Thursday 2nd November, when the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, Althea and Barry Connor will be the guest speakers and they’ll talk about African Violets.

In the late 1800’s this plant was found in Tanzania by Walter von Saint Paul whose father sent some of them to a botanical garden to be scientifically studied, hence the name, Saintpaulia, is an alternative name for African Violets which have a variety of forms and several species. As well, many hybrids have been created.

African Violets are very fussy. If they are not happy with conditions they’ll just wilt and die. They cannot tolerate temperatures less than 16 degrees Celsius and require good light such as near a window, away from direct sunlight and drafts. To maximise indirect sunlight a location facing east to south east is probably the best. Some growers have found African Violets like being near a T.V. or in the bathroom or laundry where there’s a humid atmosphere. They like to have their roots confined in a pot of moist (not wet) potting mix. Using a wick through the potting mix, then through the drainage hole in the pot is a successful method of letting the plant absorb moisture from a saucer of water. Sit the pot on stones to raise it above the water and only replace the water when the contents of the saucer have dried up. Never let the pot sit in the water. In spring or summer it’s easy to propagate African Violets from healthy leaves, and once you find a suitable growing situation, you will be rewarded with interest and colourful blooms for many years to come.

In October there’s a lot of maintenance work for gardeners.

Shrubs will need attention; spring bulbs will need nourishment to store for next year’s flowering; lawns will require mowing more often and garden beds should be enriched with compost and fertilisers before mulch is applied.

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the calendar month, and commence immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. It is pleasing to note three exhibitors, Vera, Hedy and Glenys, who became members this year, received award cards for their exhibits on the show bench at the September meeting.

The Memorial Hall is situated at the corner of Wardell and Pratt Streets, Enoggera. It is accessible by wheel chair and close to public transport.

We enjoyed a two course lunch, tea and coffee before the fashion parade. We also drew our major raffle for the year and it was great to see members winning the fabulous donated prizes.

The proceeds from this raffle go towards supporting our ‘Learning for Life Students’ and the Smith family.

For Ferny Grove I Will Fight to Fix Traffic Congestion!

Tara and I settled in Mitchelton to raise a family, because like many suburbs in the Ferny Grove electorate, it offers a great lifestyle. It’s becoming an ever-more popular place to live and housing development has increased dramatically.

The problem is, nothing has been done by this Labor Government to mitigate the growing congestion on our main roads. On top of this, Queensland Rail is in chaos, so fewer people are catching the train. It is critical that we plan NOW for the extra people moving to our electorate or our quality of life will deteriorate. Our suburbs are in danger of being loved to death!

I believe I have the experience, the determination and the new energy to get Ferny Grove moving again!

After a decade serving my country as a Transport and Logistics Officer in the Australian Army, I am still driven by a strong sense of duty. With this experience and after 265 days knocking on doors and talking to residents, I believe we can deal with growing congestion by targeting the following key areas for improvement: Major Road Upgrades • Intersection upgrades on Samford Rd to maximise flow from tributaries such as Dawson Pde. • New roads to provide better access to new housing developments.

• Better interconnectivity of bikeways to make Active Transport more viable.

More Effective Public Transport • A better plan for the redevelopment of Ferny Grove Train

Only the LNP government will build the roads and transport infrastructure we need for the future. We have a proven record of this. The Samford Rd and Wardell Street intersection is just one example, but this was just the start. There is still more work to do to get Ferny Grove moving again!

Everton Volunteers Afternoon Tea and Awards

I am fortunate to attend school, sporting club and community group events across the electorate and I am always amazed by the number of dedicated individuals volunteering their time and talents.

They truly are the backbone of our community.

Last year I hosted an afternoon tea and awards ceremony to recognise and thank some of these volunteers. It was a fantastic event, with 35 groups represented, 27 awards presented and over 100 people attending.

There were a number of Hills groups recognised, including Arana Hills SES, Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre and Arana Hills and District Seniors Club, for their hard work and commitment to the local area.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in Queensland for children under 5. As the summer season begins, it is important to remember pool safety. If a child is under five, and adult should be in the water and within arms’ reach at all times.

Ferny Grove Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan

I would like to thank the residents of Ferny Grove and Upper Kedron for providing feedback in the second round of consultation on the draft Ferny Grove-Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan.

In making this amendment package, Council followed the statutory requirements as directed by the State Government.

Council also undertook significant non-statutory consultation which included information sessions and pop-up kiosks at a number of community events to inform and collect feedback on a wide range of discussion points.

As a result of community consultation the draft neighbourhood plan has been amended to include increased biodiversity outcomes for the rehabilitation areas and improved habitat connectivity. The plan also protects visual amenity and natural topography by managing cut and fill.

Over 40 percent (910,000m2) of the site will be preserved for public use in line with Council’s bushland acquisition policy. This area is a combination of existing bushland and rehabilitated land that will contribute to the city’s green space and increasing biodiversity. In addition Council has acquired further bushland in The Gap to protect the ecological connectivity between the D’Aguilar National Park and the Keperra Saddle.

Public Transport for the area will continue to evolve as the supporting infrastructure is provided to accommodate the movement of buses through Cedar Creek south precinct.

The draft plan is now before the State Government to declare state interests and endorse the plan before Council ratification.

With the September school holidays behind us, the end of another year is in sight.

It’s a busy time of year for most of us, but spare a thought for our Year 12 students; it’s an exciting, but also a challenging time for them as they deal with examinations and look to life ahead.

To help with that transition from school to what’s next, my office will distribute a School Leavers’ Guide for students in Dickson.

The Guide contains useful information on training options, further education, career development and financial assistance and a wealth of useful contact details.

CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION

For those at the other end of the school journey, the Dickson Christmas Card Competition is underway.

The theme for this year’s card competition is: The Night Before Christmas.

There are prizes for the winners and their class.

CENTENARY OF ARMISTICE DAY

Next year marks the centenary of Armistice Day and Australians will pause to reflect on the end of the First World War. A grant programme will support community groups and organisations which develop projects or activities to mark this significant anniversary.

The Armistice Centenary Grants Programme will open in November and provide funding of up to $50,000 for selected projects.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT UPDATE

There are some promising economic signs that reveal solid and more balanced growth for our economy.

The National Accounts for the June quarter showed evidence of there being more investment, more exports, more jobs and more wages.

Growth in the economy was up 0.8 per cent in the June quarter, more than double the 0.3 per cent in the March quarter.

To the end of August there have been 11 consecutive months of jobs growth with the economy generating more than 300,000 jobs over the last year.

The Turnbull Government continues to place downward pressure on rising living costs.

Up to two million households will be contacted by their electricity providers and offered a better, cheaper deal on power bills.

The Government has banned all businesses from placing excessive surcharges on credit card transactions.

Last month we introduced legislation into Parliament to reduce pressure on housing affordability for first home buyers and downsizers. Young people can accelerate savings for a deposit through their superannuation while older Australians can contribute to superannuation from proceeds of a house sale when downsizing.

As a Government we remained focussed on making the right economic choices to create more and better paying jobs, guarantee essential services and ensuring the Government lives within its means.

Samford Road review underway

I’m thrilled to advise that as a result of my representations to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) regarding Samford Road, the department has agreed to undertake a comprehensive review into traffic flows from Dawson Parade to Imbros Street.

I am pleased this stretch of Samford Rd will become part of the Ferny Grove Electorate after the next election as it finally gives me the chance to address a major traffic issue which has been a bugbear for local residents. This section of Samford Rd was sadly ignored by the Newman/Nicholls Government and by the current Member for Everton. I refused to wait for the next election because I know people want to see some positive action now.

The initial phase of the review will focus on seven key intersections. Drivers may have already noticed cameras set up at key points along Samford Road capturing hourly traffic counts. Once the data is obtained over an extended period, engineers will model the traffic impacts of potential improvements, including lane configuration and turning.

DTMR will then develop a business case for each viable option they identify.

Upper Kedron update

After the 2015 election I delivered on a key election promise to have the Cedar Woods development called in and the development approval assessed. As a result, Brisbane

City Council was required to develop a new Ferny Grove/ Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan through consultation with the community.

685 submissions were made, and 70 per cent of those submissions objected to any further development beyond the 480 already approved.

Mark Furner MP consulting with Of the remaining community members submissions 80 indicated the development should include a southern access road to Mt Nebo Road to alleviate congestion on Samford Road.

Despite overwhelming opposition to further development on the site, LNP councillors voted unanimously to approve a plan almost identical to their original proposal. I’m disappointed that my advocacy and the voices of our community were disregarded.

I will continue to fight for your right to be heard. To that end I am supporting the formation of a residents’ association which will hold its inaugural meeting at the Cedar Creek Hall, 78 Cedar Creek Rd Upper Kedron, on Sunday 8 October at 2:30pm.

People ask me ‘why are you standing for State Parliament?’

I grew up in relative poverty in Ireland. It was a place where the only thing harsher than the climate was the lack of any real opportunities. When I was young, my Dad had to leave us to go find work overseas, and my Mum and I moved in with my grandparents.

But they are good people who know that the most important thing in life is family – that is at the core of their purpose, and it’s a value which I share.

And I came to Australia so that my kids could have a better life. The ‘Lucky Country’, where you can aspire to be better and your kids will do better if you work hard and abide by our shared values.

I fundamentally believe in the promise of Australia – equal and inclusive, the fair go and opportunity. Australia can be the best country in the world – the best place to raise a family and grow old in prosperity and security.

But my fear is that Australia’s promise is under attack. There are those who want to tear us down – to make us less equal and less inclusive. To dismantle the fair go and make sure only billionaires and corporations have opportunity.

And when I was asked to run for State Parliament, I realised that we each have a choice. We can choose to remain silent, or we can choose to stand up and fight for our way of life.

I am a values-driven candidate who will always stand up for our local community. I will stand up against politicians who tried to sell off schools to developers, who gutted our TAFEs, and who plan to sell off our assets to foreign corporations.

As someone who lives in the electorate, I know our community can do better. With energy and vision and a bit of fight, we can make life better. And that is why I am standing for State Parliament.

Members of The Hills Players are busily rehearsing for the final production for 2017 which is another Devon Williamson play called ‘Twas the Fight Before Christmas’ and stars some of our most experienced actors as well as new member, Ally McDonough.

This play is about a very dysfunctional family leading up to Christmas. Since losing her husband twelve months ago, Mary is dreading the arrival of her two horrible adult daughters who will do their best to ruin Mary’s Christmas.

Make October Your Month To Have A Breastscreen

Many of us find excuses when it comes to making appointments for our own health checks. How many times have you heard yourself say,‘I just don’t have the time’ or ‘I’ll do it next week?’

If there is one thing you should do for yourself in the month of October, it’s make an appointment to have a breastscreen.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a timely reminder for eligible women to take advantage of the free BreastScreen Queensland Program.

Medical Director of BreastScreen Queensland Brisbane Northside, Dr Jane Brazier, said women of all ages need to be breast aware. This means getting to know the normal look and feel of your breasts.

‘If you notice any change in or around the breast it is important to contact your GP without delay,’ she said.

Dr Brazier said all BreastScreen Queensland radiographers are women and a doctor’s referral was not needed for this free service.

A breastscreen is strongly recommended every two years for women aged between 50 and 74, as this is the age group where the benefits of screening are most evident, however women in their 40’s or 75 years and over are also eligible to attend.

The Ferny Hills Swim and Survive Program is a swimming and water safety initiative of the Royal Life Saving Society and Belgravia Leisure.

The program seeks to increase swimming and water safety skills of Australian children in order to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity. We cater to all of the community including children and adults of all ages and abilities, including Special needs This program ensures the essential components of personal survival and water safety are provided as well as the process of developing a strong and effective swimming technique.

Learn to read the signs if you suspect a loved one of suffering Depression.

• Are they simply ‘not themselves’?

• Are they quieter than usual, more withdrawn, or more emotional, moody or irritable?

• Are your phone calls unanswered or not returned?

• Are there noticeable changes to their eating or sleeping patterns?

If you observe signs such as these, consider the following: 1. Raise the issue with them. Ask how they’re feeling.

2. Encourage them to visit their GP. Accompany them.

3. Don’t say ‘snap out of it.’ They’d love to, but can’t.

4. Don’t say you know how they feel if you don’t.

5. Listen to what they’re saying, and NOT saying?

6. Don’t give advice. When they’re ready to talk, they’re

not seeking advice, just a friend. If you have nothing to say, say nothing.

7. Put them at ease. Don’t add to their stress.

8. Stay calm and relaxed. Having positive body language will help you both to feel more comfortable.

9. Neither blame nor abandon them. You may be their only support: they can’t afford to lose you too.

10. Finally, take care of you! Supporting someone with depression is demanding. Take ‘time out’ to look after yourself.

Depression doesn’t just affect individuals. Families, friends and relationships also suffer from its effects. And often we’re the first call for help. Be there.

DENTURES - What you need to know!

This is a very common question.

Dentures offer a number of benefits to people who have lost their natural teeth: They can help them regain the ability to eat a greater variety of foods, speak more clearly, and smile with confidence. However, it’s important to recognize that there are also some downsides to wearing dentures.

For one thing, they put pressure on the gums and consequently the bony ridges beneath them. This causes resorption, a process that results in a gradual decrease in bone volume and density. Resorption and bone loss are accelerated if dentures are worn 24 hours per day. With the loss of bone comes inadequate support for the dentures, causing them to become loose and fall out more easily. This also results in less support for the cheeks and lips, which can cause very dramatic changes in facial appearance.

In addition, if they are not properly cared for, the under surfaces of dentures in particular can become breeding grounds for oral bacteria and fungi, which can cause odors, irritation and disease.

You’re Not Listening To Me!

Dear R, I wonder if you have any thoughts on some strategies I could use with my 20 year old daughter. I find the way she flies off into an almost uncontrollable rage over what I feel are ridiculous things, really intolerable. It makes living with her very unpleasant. I’ll describe a recent and typical scenario.

Fran has recently shifted back from Bundaberg where she’s been working for the last year. In this instance she was putting her stuff away in her old bedroom, when she called me in to see if I could see her difficulty, which basically was that the room was too small. She had too much stuff, and the window, on a hot still day, does not provide much ventilation. To my mind, the room looked like a dump with all her junk piled everywhere.

After I listened to her, I applied as asked, I thought, logic to the situation, saying ‘Sort yourself out, store what you don’t need, organise your present stuff, and then when you’re tidy and organised, you won’t feel so hot and bothered, and you’ll have more room to position the fan properly et cetera.’

Well! She just went off again with ‘You’re not listening to me. You‘re not listening to me, you never do.’- et cetera. She really winds herself up and can become quite abusive. I try to show that I have listened by staying calm and repeating, word for word, what she has just said, and once again supplying a solution I thought she had asked for. This only makes her worse, and she keeps repeating the same tirade until I walk off and usually out of the house to get away from her until she‘s calmed down. What’s happening here? I can’t understand what she’s wanting of me.

Dear Nola, I think ‘You’re not listening to me’ could roughly be translated as ‘You‘re not giving me the answer I want to hear.’ She hands her problem over to you, and when you can‘t fix it the way she wants, you get ‘You‘re not listening.’ Now there’s a pretty difficult piece of sub-text going on here that you have to read, and you‘re getting conned into trying to solve the unsolvable.

There are a few strategies that may be useful that I can think of. If you haven’t already, I would try sitting down with her when she is calm, and discuss with her how she thinks her emotional reactivity helps her solve any of her problems. Ask her is this the effect she wants to have on her friends or family?

Can she see the consequences of her reactivity? How will it help her solve any of the big issues in life that she is going to

encounter as an adult if she continues to behave in any stressful situation in this way? Also ask her if she can see when she has calmed down (a) what it was she was wanting from you; (b) because you would like to be able to support her in her finding a solution if you can. But at the moment, and because of the way she chooses to deal with it, you are totally lost as to what it is she really wants. Can she help you with this problem?

Put it back on her. And a question for both of you is: Does she really know what she wants? Does she have a hidden agenda?

That is, in the present case, a bigger bedroom, maybe another family member’s. And she knows she can’t really have it. Is this the real origin of a lot of her reactivity? A refusal by her to accept the fact that she wants something that is neither appropriate nor possible to have at this point in time.

See if she is amenable to such self observation and when she is aware of her triggers, disciplining herself to make the choice to use her will to calm herself down (a) by slowing her breath; (b) relaxing the tension she’s building up in her body; and (c) using positive self-talk not to go into that space. It is important to stress that this is what she is choosing to think and do to herself, and then dump on others to try and get her own way. This needs to be said gently, not judgmentally, or blaming, simply pointing out that we have choices about how we behave and that there are outcoms to them. Would she like others behaving this way to her?

Also letting her know when you are talking things through, that you will no longer be willing to listen to or support her in any way if she continues to behave abusively. You will not be reinforcing such inappropriate and immature behaviour any longer. Make sure you stick to this whilst maintaining the calm that you have employed so well in the past.
