Is this the Final Solution for Arana Hills Traffic Congestion?
Moreton Bay Regional Council has awarded a $1.6 million tender for the Patricks Road and Dawson Parade intersection upgrade at Arana Hills following extensive community consultation and feedback. Work will commence in coming weeks and is expected to be completed by October, weather permitting. Both Patricks Road and Dawson Parade present accessibility problems with traffic flow a major issue especially during morning and afternoon peak hours. Shopping centres on both sides of Patricks Road, popular fast food outlets and a busy bus stop all combine to create a motoring nightmare. Patricks Road into Arana Hills runs through three sets of traffic lights – Bringelly Street, Kmart entrance and Dawson Parade. Previous attempts at relieving congestion along this strip achieved partial success. A right turn arrow (outbound) at Bringelly Street reduced congestion and calmed frustrated motorists previously caught behind turning traffic. A further right turn arrow (inbound) at the entrance to Kmart allowed safe passage to turning motorists. Despite numerous configurations of turning lanes, arrows and prolonged green lights for turning traffic – confusion still reigns at the very busy Dawson Parade/Patricks Road intersection. Only one left turning lane from Patricks Road into Dawson Parade results in a long line of waiting traffic stretching back to Bringelly Street. Similarly, traffic from the north wishing to turn right into Patricks Road has only one lane open to them. This line of waiting traffic stretches even further back and impatient drivers will resort to a short cut via Nepean Avenue if the opportunity presents. Generally this is the quickest option. Moreton Bay Regional Council is now offering a new solution. Division 10 Councillor Matt Constance said following an 18 month community consultation period with local residents, motorists and business owners, council had finalised designs on the upgrade and would now construct two new right turn lanes into Patricks Road from Dawson Parade, relocate the existing Kmart Plaza bus stop and create a new right turn and U-turn lane at the Patricks Road and Bringelly Street intersection. ‘The existing Kmart Plaza bus stop will be relocated further west of the shop’s Patricks Road entrance, to avoid any traffic backing onto motorists while buses stop to pick up passengers,’ Cr Constance said. ‘In addition to improved traffic flow, this is a project that will increase safety for road users including cyclists, and that’s why as part of the project, new cyclist bays will also be installed at all legs of both the Dawson Parade and Bringelly Street intersections.’ ‘To minimise disruptions, contractors would implement a traffic management plan throughout the duration of works, and where possible, works would be carried out at night,’ said Cr Constance. The next meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera, is on Thursday, 6th July. The guest speaker is Wendy Skelton who will talk about Pests and Diseases. You’ve probably noticed how the weak is often overpowered by the strong, e.g. a lame bird is tormented and attacked by the other birds, or a child with a disadvantage is the victim of bullies. Well in the plant world a similar thing happens. If plants are under-nourished or have the wrong conditions, they become weak, which can result in an attack by pests and diseases. Just a simple precaution like disinfecting the secateurs in Methylated Spirits or bleach before proceeding to the next plant, will prevent the spread of disease from one plant to another, or care with watering will prevent attack by fungi. With Wendy’s vast knowledge and expertise, she will be able to advise what to do or not to do. Now that it is winter, remember to water the garden between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Herbaceous perennials may be lifted and divided. Large limbs may be removed from trees while they are in less active growth. Bare-rooted roses will be on sale. Choose a variety that has proved it is suitable for a warm climate and do not delay planting it in a well prepared spot. Also don’t delay in planting winter vegetables, and potatoes can go in now. Only 55 students from across the nation have been selected for entry into this program. The inspiration for the KYCP comes from the young, untested soldiers of the 39th Battalion who fought on the Kokoda Track during World War II. The students will take part in this 14 month experience that includes walking the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea, community volunteering and completing the 30km and 96km Challenges here in Queensland. Ferny Grove State High School are very proud of these students for committing to supporting the Kokoda Foundation and it’s life changing charity work.

Brendan along with his wife Lara are the owners of Baxter and Sons Coffee Roasters in Everton Hills. Brendan has been in the coffee industry for 15 years and has spent a lot of time working on coffee farms overseas. He started up the roastery in Everton Hills when he moved to the area five years ago. He is dedicated to using directly traded coffee that they import to Australia themselves. One of Rotary’s contributions towards education of youth is the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) which takes place once a year. This unique opportunity allows for students entering Year 12 to explore prospective vocation, study and employment options within science, engineering and technology. Rotary clubs approach their local schools for nominations and may assist with funding where necessary. Each year in January NYSF takes almost 500 students to three sessions in January. In 2018 two sessions will be held in Canberra and Brisbane. This 12 day intensive, residential program will involve living on campus at either the Australian National University or the University of Queensland. The students will attend lectures and seminars, tour labs and talk with leading researchers, visit industrial sites and have fun getting to know each other and experiencing life on campus. NYSF also runs a series of follow up programs. Training covers topics such as personal resilience, logistics, group development, personal wellbeing, time management, taking responsibility for actions, and other considerations to facilitate the safe and successful January sessions. At this years Hills Carnivale we decided to mix things up from previous years, setting up a dunking booth where Brendan, Barry, Allanah and a couple of helpers took the stand. The dunking booth was a great attraction to not only the kids but adults as well. After losing track of the number of dunking's we raised $220.30 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. If you are 65 or over, the Government will allow you to make a non-concessional contribution of up to $300,000 from the proceeds of selling your home from 1 July 2018. Both members of a couple are allowed to take advantage of this measure for the same home—effectively allowing them to invest $600,000. This non-concessional contribution will be excluded from the existing age test, work test and the $1.6 million balance threshold.
Helping first home buyers From 1 July 2017, first home buyers can contribute up to $15,000 per year and $30,000 in total in voluntary contributions to their superannuation account, within existing contribution caps, that can be withdrawn for their deposit. These savings will benefit from the tax advantages of superannuation. Contributions and earnings will be taxed at only 15%, rather than at marginal rates, and withdrawals will be taxed at marginal rates less 30%. Tightening foreign investor rules The Government will stop foreign and temporary tax residents from claiming the main residence capital gains tax exemption when they sell their Australian property. YMCA Enoggera has moved!
The YMCA Enoggera is moving to a new location at 25 Harvton Street, Stafford. The doors open Monday 10th July. They will then be known as YMCA Stafford.
The YMCA Enoggera began over 40 years ago as the Y-North Family Centre at Windsor. December 2008 saw the end of an era. After 40 years of service to the local and surrounding Windsor community, the centre was resumed by the Department of Natural Resources for the combined Northern Busway and Airport Link Project. A total of 380 gymnasts and their families were affected by the closure. Thankfully due to an exhaustive search by YMCA staff, a new home was found at 240 South Pine Road, Enoggera (our present location). Whilst not all families could relocate to the new venue, the Enoggera community welcomed the YMCA with an overwhelming response to marketing at the end of February 2009. Over the last few years, it has again shown growth, and now stands at over 600 members. However the YMCA Enoggera was always temporary as it was housed in a leased facility and so now, 8 years later, we have finally found a new home at 25 Harvton Street, Stafford. At YMCA Enoggera (Stafford) Gymnastics, the staff are committed to delivering a quality gymnastics program where the individuality of each child is respected and catered for, talents are nurtured and special needs are recognised. We foster the development of positive experiences through progressive physical development, communication, problem solving, self-help skills and conflict resolution through verbal communication. Teaching respect for other people and their belongings as well as good manners is also important. Samford Museum’s National Trust Heritage Festival Commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Camp Mt train disaster took place recently.
The commemoration drew many who came to remember family and friends who were on the ill-fated Customs Dept picnic train on Labour day 1947. Others came to remember how their family was touched in other ways. Some who were on the train or went to offer assistance told stories so vivid it could have happened much more recently. Who would have thought that after 70 years a passenger would be able to meet and thank two of Camp Mt locals who assisted with rescues? Thank you to Rotary Club of Samford and Samford Progress Assn for taking care of the Memorial Service and participation of Rev Peter Armstrong, Mr John Ikin, Acting Commander, Regional Command Queensland, Australian Border Protection, Mr Greg Hallam, Q’ld Rail Historian, local Federal Minister Peter Dutton Minister for Immigration and Border Protection. Arana Netball Club
Now just past the half-way point of fixtures for the season, Arana Netball teams are performing well, with five teams sitting in the top half of their points table - Arana 1,Opens Div. 2; Arana 3, Opens Div. 7; Arana 4, Intermediate 4; Arana 5, Intermediate 6; and Arana 8, 13Yrs Div.4. However, with a number of games to go, these tables can change as teams continue to improve. Also affecting the outcome of future games in each grade is the impact of re-grading which occurred with Downey Park teams at the completion of the first rounds of fixtures. Re-grading is implemented where it is perceived that a team has originally been positioned in a grade too easy or too difficult for their current standard, and by moving such teams it is hoped to achieve a more even competition for all in the grades. Arana
Netball’s two 12 Year Old teams, Arana 8 and Arana 9, were both moved to one division lower, which should ensure them more competitive games for the rest of the season. Arana Netball continues to celebrate 40 years of operations in 2017. The Gala Dinner is on 17th May, and a movie night and special trophy presentation event are further celebrations being planned and yet to be finalised. Club meetings are held monthly, on the third Monday of each month, at the Arana Sports meeting room, at the Hills District Community Centre, Dawson Parade, Arana Hills. Joined by member for Ferny Grove, Mark Furner, the members enjoyed a breakfast with music then a fun social bowls morning. Arana VIEW Club meets on Wednesday 5th July at Arana Leagues Club at 10.30am. Cost is $25 for a 2-course lunch. The 49th Hills District & Bunya Garden Competition has been launched.
Once again the Arana Hills Library looked after our committee and prospective entrants on Saturday 5th May when we launched this year’s competition. Kylie Stapleton one of our past garden winners did a great presentation on how to prepare your edible garden. Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, My ex-husband disappeared out of my children's lives two years ago. Basically when he was forced to honour his legal obligations, he thought he could get at me by withdrawing from his children. I certainly was hurt, but because of the hurt that my children suffered, I have not to this day criticised him in front of them, or told them the truth. I have given them a cover story, saying that he is working far away and can't contact us, but sends his love. They have accepted this because they were young enough - two and five years old - to be able to be conned. Now, amazingly, because of our impending court case re financial settlement and custody arrangements, he has appeared out of the blue and wants access to them. Through legal representation we worked out a time when he could re-contact them, first by phone. My dilemma is how to deal with what I fear will continue to happen once this contact is re-established. My daughter who is the younger, appeared to handle the re-connecting telephone conversation better than my sevenyear-old son, who became very needy and aggressive after the phone-call. He was blaming me and becoming very upset, saying I hadn't given him enough special time. This is the oneon-one with me time I put aside for each of my children. He was also saying that grown-ups lie. When I asked him about what, he said about Father Christmas, the tooth fairy, etcetera. And how could he believe what he was being told. I'm not sure what was happening here, but I knew it was to do with the absence of his father. I am concerned as to how to work with the up-coming custody contact. I want my children to have a relationship with their father but I am afraid of his inconsistency, and how to deal with that possibility and its effect on our children. Jenny Dear Jenny, Before I answer the questions you have posed, let me first congratulate you on your loving good sense. It is truly tragic when parents use their children as weapons to get at the other. It may not be an entirely conscious act but at some level, by God, we know what we are doing, and eventually we are going to have to sit with it and face the uncomfortable truth of our actions and the long-term effect on those that we are supposed to love. It is fortunate that your children have been young enough that you could protect them with that cover story. Good work! They will have felt his abandonment enough without taking on any extra garbage of self blame and guilt, as children tend to do. To your first question: Why is your son acting out on you? You
are the safe one. You didn't leave, so it feels safer for him to express his anxiety, often via hostility and blame, on to you. You can see the effect of irresponsible action: the child is very confused, and is feeling an inability to trust what adults do and say because of what he has experienced in his relationship with his father. And it is unsettling him greatly. Whilst not allowing a continuance of inappropriate behaviour, as soon as possible sit down with him and explore with him why he is doing what he is. Deal with his concerns about not having time with you, but let the questioning lead to how he is feeling about his father and the renewal of contact. Explore what his feelings are behind the anger. It is important to acknowledge and validate all of his feelings, to let him know that it is okay to feel this, but also that there are more positive ways to behave that can allow us to express our anxiety and get the support we need to help us move through them. It will also help him to take responsibility for his behaviour, and demonstrate that he has a choice. And what he gets in terms of behavioural outcomes is dependent on this. This is also how you would support either of your children and yourself in what is usually a difficult transitional period. This stuff has a tendency to keep coming up, and mothers more often have to deal with this behaviour because they are the ones who tend to be the primary care-giver and the one who spends the majority of time with the children : What can you do about your fear of future inconsistency from your husband? Nothing, ultimately. His learning to be more responsible with regard to his children's emotional well-being is his responsibility. I would also consult your solicitor so that these concerns and your fear of future repetition are voiced in the appropriate way when custody arrangements are being made. Meanwhile, do not distract yourself with what has not yet happened. Your resourcefulness and primary love and care of your children will enable you to deal with it in the way that best supports them, just as you have done in the past. Robin

Federal Budget Supports Defence Families
I am delighted to share with our Defence community that the Federal Budget will be expanding counselling for Veterans and their families. The government has stated that ‘it understands that partners, families and former partners are an important part of the Defence community and they too are affected by military service.’ Now, partners, children and immediate family members of veterans will have access to counselling and group programs. The mental health of the broader community in general is something I care very much about and I welcome your suggestions on any local or State wide community programs which you believe could address this issue.

ANZAC Day Services
As a returned serviceman, I was deeply honoured to be asked to represent LNP Members of Parliament across the electorate on ANZAC day. Record crowds attended the Gaythorne RSL dawn service. Hundreds of children represented schools from across the district as well as sporting and social clubs. It was tremendous to see them proudly displaying their uniforms and banners and demonstrating their respect for the ANZAC legacy. I feel immensely proud to be a part of this community which came out in such numbers to pay their respects. I was also very proud to represent the Hon Mr Tim Nicholls MP at the Students’ ANZAC day service held at ANZAC Square on the Monday before. The two and half hour long service was attended by Defence and Government representatives including Governor of Queensland, the Hon Mr Paul de Jersey. It was also a privilege to meet retired COL Arthur Burke OAM (and his grandson) who was responsible for the inaugural Students’ ANZAC day service. The students acquitted themselves with distinction and were an outstanding example of how enthusiastically young Australians have taken the significance of the ANZAC spirit and sacrifice to heart.

Coalition’s needs-based funding model. The total increase in funding for our 32 primary and secondary schools in Dickson over the next 10 years is $205 million as part of the Coalition’s broader investment of $18.6 billion extra across all Australian schools. There are more than 9000 families in the electorate that use government supported child care. Our Budget will ensure that children in Dickson can access 15 hours of preschool a week, while more than 2500 children will reap the benefits of an additional $3.2 million in funding for Dickson for preschool education.
Energy Cost Assistance
More than 17,000 people in Dickson on pensions and a range of other government support payments will be provided a one-off Energy Assistance Payment of $75 (single) or $125 (couple) to help meet the rising cost of electricity.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was in Petrie and Eatons Hill in recent weeks. I invited him to see the location of the proposed Moreton Bay campus of the Sunshine Coast University at Petrie (USC). Moreton Bay Regional Council and USC have a great vision for the old paper mill site and I have made sure Canberra is aware of the significance of the project to our local community. Our efforts were rewarded in the recent Federal Budget with the Federal Government providing a concessional loan to enable construction of the university to get underway. The significance of this project for our region cannot be underestimated. It will provide thousands of jobs during construction and once it is operating. It’s been estimated it could add almost a billion dollars in economic activity to the region annually. Importantly it will provide access to tertiary education for our children within our community – offering an alternative to city based institutions. The Prime Minister also took time out to meet locals at a ‘politics in the pub’ function at the Eatons Hill Hotel where residents took the opportunity to discuss current issues.
Support for Veterans
2400 veterans in Dickson will have easier access to mental health services and counselling while investments in technology will provide easier access to DVA services for 3400 DVA clients.
Support for Small Business
13,000 small businesses across the Dickson electorate can benefit from an extension of the $20,000 instant asset writeoff for a further 12 months. That comes on top of a tax cut that will be backdated to July 1 last year for almost 14,000 businesses in this electorate.
Bruce Highway improvements
Half a billion dollars is provided to make the Bruce Highway six lanes wide all the way to Caloundra. Importantly there’s also funding for the Deception Bay interchange - $120 million to upgrade it.
Budget delivers other benefits for Dickson
There was more good news for the Dickson electorate in the recent Federal Budget. It guarantees record funding for Medicare, the PBS and the NDIS now and into the future.
NDIS to help 2500 local people
The NDIS is one of the largest social and economic reforms in Australia’s history. It is a new way of providing support for people with disability, their families and carers. An estimated 91,000 Queenslanders will access the NDIS over coming years; here in Dickson its estimated 2500 local people will be directly helped by the NDIS. The Coalition has taken action to ensure the NDIS is fully paid for in the future by increasing the Medicare Levy by 0.5 per cent. Any of us could be in an accident tomorrow and be in need of support under the NDIS. It is a national insurance scheme for all of us and the Government’s increase in the levy adds up to about $1 per day extra.

National Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day
National Reconciliation Week this year marked two landmark events for recognition of Indigenous people: The 50th anniversary of the ‘yes’ vote, and the 25th anniversary of the Mabo land rights decision. The overwhelming ‘yes’ vote in the 1967 referendum, which removed words which excluded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders from the constitution and allowed the Government to legislate for all Australians, was an important step towards reconciliation. I’ve been honoured to attend many ceremonies over Reconciliation Week as Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, beginning with the Teralba Park Stolen Generations commemorations to honour National Sorry Day on Friday 26 May. The ceremony was attended by many in the community who were entertained by Indigenous dancers from Mitchelton State High School under the direction of a Bangarra Dance Theatre choreographer. This year’s Sorry Day marked 20 years since the Bringing Them Home report was tabled in the Federal Parliament. This report detailed the experiences and hurt of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children stolen from their families, their communities and culture under the shameful practices of governments past. On National Sorry Day I acknowledged the hurt, the healing and the resilience of the Stolen Generations, and reflected

Historical convictions expunged
In the spirit of reconciliation for past wrongdoings, on Thursday 11 May the Palaszczuk Government apologised to members of the LGBTI community who were convicted of historical homosexual activity in Queensland, and introduced legislation to Queensland Parliament to expunge these historical convictions. When introducing the legislation, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk acknowledged the harm that had been inflicted on people convicted of homosexual activity during the time that it was considered a criminal offence. This is an important step towards addressing the stigma attached to outdated criminal charges and convictions, and I’m proud to be part of a Government which delivers progressive policies and recognises fairness and equality as fundamental rights.

It was great to see so many people and families from all over Brisbane coming to support local stallholders and businesses at the Hills Carnivale. I was delighted to see many of you again, and to meet many people from suburbs of Brisbane which will become part of the newly redistributed seat of Ferny Grove.
