An Ekkanomical Success

For first-time bidders in the Ekka’s notorious cattle auction, Arana Tender Cut Meats sure left the Brisbane show cheering. Each year, the Ekka plays host to Australia’s largest annual ‘cattle comp’, with breeders herding their best cattle for auction. The tradition first appeared in the year 1876, where just three beef breeds were on offer at the show—Durham, Devon, and Hereford. This year, 30 breeds paraded through the Ekka’s Main Area, with over 1300 of the beasts featuring in the led steer and stud beef competitions.

As well, we’ve ‘herd’ that sales in excess of 15 million will be generated just from this year’s fruitful heavyweight deals! One of those sales now belongs to Arana Tender Cut Meats, a local butcher in Kmart Plaza on Patrick’s Road, in the form of four hooves. Although it was established in 2009, the butcher

only changed ownership to Ross and Brooke Catanzariti last year. Hence, this was the couples’ first year bidding on a cow in the Ekka. In their case, their chosen cow also won Junior Champion.

As the new owners, the Catanzariti’s keenly await their prizewinning meat to be processed and ready to be sold to customers in coming weeks. Ross informs Echo News that their business intends to participate in the auction every year from now on. For those interested in a slice of Arana Tender Cut Meats’ Ekkanomic success, it can be purchased in store. Alternatively, the butcher offers website ordering, click & collect and delivery services across majority of Brisbane and the Moreton Bay Region. Arana Tender Cut Meats is contactable on (07) 3158 3646 or aranatendercutmeats@gmail.com

Charity Golf Day Raises $17,200 to Support Bereaved Families

Children in heaven ensured a charity golf day at Keperra Golf Club last month was a ‘hole in one’ success for a Queensland support group that parents and families hope they never need. The event took place in support of The Compassionate Friends Queensland (TCFQ) - a dedicated charity to the support, care and comfort of parents, siblings and grandparents following the death of a child from any cause at any age. The group offers a haven of understanding, care, and comfort during times of profound grief.

Hosted in partnership with sponsor Rhino Finance, the golf day that showcased a heartwarming display of community solidarity, raised an impressive $17,200 for the cause. The golf day drew substantial support from both the community and sporting heroes. Queensland State of Origin legends Scott Sattler, David Shillington, and Greg Conescu lent their star power to the cause. Sattler's swings added to the excitement on the greens, while Conescu and Shillington engaged in a spirited question-and-answer session during the lunch break.

Peter and Erin Hobson's personal connection to TCFQ underscores the group's profound impact. The couple, who lost their youngest son Brendan in a motorcycle accident overseas at the age of 19 in 2016, have not only benefited from TCFQ's services but have also become dedicated volunteers. Peter emphasized the significance of finding support from others who have walked a similar path, stating, ‘The support and friendship of other bereaved parents helped us to find hope and strength after Brendan died.’

Peter, who is also President of TCFQ, expressed his gratitude

for the overwhelming success of the event. ‘The money raised is used by TCFQ to provide support services to bereaved parents, including a range of seminars and interactive workshops,’ he said. These initiatives offer a lifeline to parents navigating the challenging journey of healing after the loss of a child.

TCFQ, which began its mission in 1985, has since assisted over 3000 parents and boasts nearly 400 active members. The group's regular meetings provide a safe haven for bereaved families to find solace, understanding, and a listening ear. For those seeking more information about TCFQ and its support services for bereaved families in Queensland, visit their website at www.compassionatefriendsqld.org.au.

The charity golf day's triumph stands as a testament to the power of community, compassion, and unity in the face of heartache.

Kevin Couch—The Smiling Face of our Community

This August, signs were unveiled to crown a section of pathway in Cowrie Pde Park, Albany Creek, renaming it in dedication to one charming resident, Kevin Couch.

Echo News Brisbane recently caught up with the man, the myth, the legend himself, accompanied by Kevin’s good friend Malcom Triplow, who helped the 90-year-old resident down to meet us. Despite his mature age, Kevin was switched on, bright-eyed and bushytailed, and eager to tell his story!

Kevin shared that it is through walking the local pathways that he has established a life-altering connection with his local community and turned them into one big family. In agreeance, Malcom told us, “It is not geographically where he walks, but the way he walks.” Indeed, Kevin’s routine involves going on walks 1-3 times daily to get out in the fresh air and befriend the neighbours he passes. Now, it has reached the point where Kevin knows everyone he walks by, and everyone knows him. Even during our interview in Cowrie Parade Park, cars were tooting their hellos while passersby waved and stopped to ask how he was doing—it felt like being in the presence of a celebrity!

To meet and greet as many of his neighbours as possible, Kevin aims to walk at different times of the day; he recognises the 6am walkers, the 7-8am walkers, and the after-9am walkers. On quite a heartwarming note, Kevin carries a writing pad

in his zimmer frame about the people he sees regularly. As there are so many faces and stories to remember, Kevin began keeping notes of peoples’ names, life situations, illnesses, etc.

Kevin’s daily strolls through Albany Creek began during COVID lockdowns as a way of returning cheer and connectedness to the quiet streets. While he still embarks on these walks, Kevin’s efforts have also turned to organising morning teas

and festive barbeques for the neighbourhood. The first one was held in the park, coming out of COVID, with around 70 people showing up. Now, due to their ever-growing popularity amongst the community, Kevin holds these events every 3-4 months, often on public holidays like the Queen’s Birthday and Christmas.

With the help of his son, Kevin gets out the blower to tidy up the space, then lays out tables, paints signs of advertisement to hang in trees, drops flyers in letterboxes, and local kids write in chalk on pathways promoting the morning tea. On the day, people tend to bring their own chairs to come chitter chatter for a couple hour, usually in accompaniment with music playing, snacks and refreshments, dogs, kids, and plenty of laughter. Recently, a special morning tea was held for Kevin’s 90th birthday, to which around 150 locals attended to celebrate him and all the joy he’d brought to their community.

As well, in January, Kevin received a Moreton Bay Australia Day Community Spirit Award for his voluntary role in organising community events and fostering a sense of connectedness in the suburb. Moreton Bay Regional Council voted unanimously to rename Kevin’s usual park route “Kevin’s Way”, and to mount a board describing Kevin’s connection to the space.

Proud as punch, Kevin’s gratitude is etched all over his face— as you can see in the accompanying photo. Kevin’s wife jests, “If Kevin had it’s Way, he’d always get his way!”

An update from the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club

At the end of each financial year Lions Clubs across the world induct new ‘Boards of Directors’ to move the club forward into the New Year. Last Sunday saw your local Keperra Lions induct their new Board of Directors at Club Arana.

meeting new people, help our bodies combat the sickness’ that were so prevalent 60 years ago. Life expectancy was 66.6 for males and 73.1 for females – but now that has increased to 81.3 and 85.4 respectively. Another good reason to volunteer! Thanks again, Paul Ryan – Golden Valley Keperra Lions

Can You Help To Kickstart A Students Day?

In August, we had the pleasure of visiting Grovely State School to meet the new Principal – Eliza Borsht. We were there in order to set up a bursary in honor of our late member and past Principal of Grovely SS – PDG Lion Lyndsay Barton.

So what - I hear you say! Well, the idea is if you have a large enough club you can train new leaders, turn over the executive, while ensuring existing members don’t get stale. This process also fosters new ideas to reinvigorate the organisation. That’s why each month in the Echo I ask for more volunteers. Our donations to the Community this year was in excess of $55,000. So, if you have a few hours free (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) give me a call. The new Board of Directors is as follows.

President – Rodd Chignell, 1st Vice President – Ben de Groot, 2nd Vice President – Denis Stirling, Immediate Past President – Darryl Robson, Secretary – Jan Spathonis, Treasurer – Kevin Greensill, Directors – Sandra Downing, Margaret Owen, Tim Brinums, Debbie Payne, Paul Ryan and Colin Hambrecht.

Now, like most residents in the area, the closest we usually get to Grovely SS is the Arana Leagues Club across the road! However, we had a terrific time at the school and we were more than impressed, with this fabulous local school. The campus was clean and tidy, staff welcoming and, although students were in class when we visited, it was clear that this was a school that cared for their students. Principal Eliza advised they currently had 380 students and, like so many schools in Australia, there were still students coming to school without breakfast.

President Rodd in his report advised that ‘Being a Lion was not only about Fundraising and Community service but also about fellowship and having fun while helping others.’ Our motto “We Serve” says it all.

If you would like more information, such as a copy of our Annual Report, membership information, an invitation to a social night where you can meet us informally or a Coffee at Kakowan Community Facility we would love to hear from you. Medical Research is a passion of Lions but volunteering and

To overcome this problem, Principal Eliza has taken steps to introduce a ‘Breakfast Club’ at Grovely. Available to every student this breakfast club will not only provide food to empty bellies but also build an even stronger school community. So here’s where the rubber hits the road: Grovely SS needs the support of local business and residents to assist with the provision of food required on a daily basis. Some items required are bread, fruit, spreads, cereal, milk and juice. While your local Keperra Lions Club will assist as much as we can, Grovely SS could certainly use the support of other locals. If you or your business is in a position to assist the ‘Grovely SS Breakfast Club,’ please get in touch via their website https://grovelyss.eq.edu.au/ or give them a call on 3354 6333.

Big Effort for Small Steps

A massive congratulations to the local running group, Run with Rob (RWR), who took out the ‘2023 Largest Team’ trophy at the Sunshine Coast Marathon last month for the second year in a row.

This local running family has grown exponentially over the last few years. In 2021, they had a handful of runners participating, then in 2022 took out the largest team trophy with 149 runners! Now in 2023 an incredible 152 took part in the festivities with runners participating across a distances.

The RWR community mission is to not only foster an all inclusive running group that welcomes all abilities but to raise funds for charity through their running initiatives. Last year the group raised a mammoth $12,000 for the Small Steps for Hannah Foundation. This year, the team topped that with over $20,000 raised.

Master-Planned Community Revealed

event spaces, library and work zones. ClubQ will also include a 25m lap pool with an adjoining sun deck, two additional resort-style pools with an integrated waterfall, kids’ splash and play area, and a private wellness centre featuring a fully equipped gymnasium and meditation room.

The developer, Frasers Property Australia, has spent the past two years undertaking the extensive transformation of the landscape with a focus on placemaking and connectivity as Cameron Leggatt, Executive General Manager Development explains.

The much-anticipated $500 million master planned community, The Quarry at Keperra, was officially revealed to the community on the 8th July with an Open Day hosted by the developer Frasers Property Australia.

Spanning 48.7 hectares, the hillside precinct is transforming from the Keperra Quarry into Brisbane’s most elevated community featuring a mix of home and land sites, Rothelowman designed terrace home residences, extensive place making and shared resort-style amenities. However, this is not your traditional subdivision, nor urban jungle. More than 40 per cent of the community is dedicated to existing bushland and newly curated green space and resident amenities. Homes will be built on elevated platforms up to 170m above sea level, enabling them to capture views overlooking the D’Aguilar Range, Glasshouse Mountains, Moreton Bay and beyond. In addition, residents will also enjoy access to ClubQ, the $5 million Rothelowman-designed community recreation centre complete with an entertainer’s kitchen, dining room,

‘This is without doubt one of the most significant urban transformations we’ve undertaken and it’s a challenge we’ve embraced wholeheartedly,’ Mr Leggatt says.

‘Some of Brisbane’s most celebrated precincts have been transformed from industrial style uses into vibrant urban renewal precincts and The Quarry is one of those chapters in that renewal.

‘The site’s sculptural setting lends itself to dynamic architecture and landscaping, and we have partnered with an exceptional team of architects, place makers and landscape designers to bring our vision to life.’

It seems the development is a much-needed asset for Keperra with over 1,000 people attending the Open Day keen to experience the transformation for the first time. Furthermore, since the opening, 450 enquiries and 150 walk-ins to the onsite sales centre have been made for the first land release of 29 home sites.

The current working Keperra Quarry, which mines granite, has operated for more than 60 years and will progressively curb operations as the development of the residential stages advance.

Land prices at The Quarry start from $580,000. For more information, visit keperraquarry.com.au

A Day Trip To Samford Museum

An update from the Samford Museum

As summer days arrive, the outdoors is an appealing places to go.

When looking for somewhere to spend an hour or so on a day trip, why not head ‘over the range’ and consider dropping into Samford Museum next to John Scott Park in Samford Village? Following school class visits, children often return with all the family in tow. Grandparents enjoy the visits too reminiscing as they move throughout the museum complex. What are visitors likely to see? Examples of childhood toys without screens and batteries, communication before mobile phones, and a collection of farm machinery and tools to name but a few. There are glimpses into the local timber industry, milk and cream production before electricity and the corner store. Discover the reason for Samford Village being where it is and Samford School’s early days are just some points of interest.

Dakabin now host to local Wildlife Hospital

Moreton Bay Wildlife Hospital Foundation’s committee

Christine West,

Since becoming a fully endorsed charity with land secured to build the region’s first wildlife hospital, Moreton Bay Wildlife Hospital Foundation’s mission to improve outcomes for native wildlife is succeeding.

In late July, Moreton Bay Regional Council announced that the hospital’s new home will be 420 Old Gympie Road, Dakabin. Moreton Bay Wildlife Hospital Foundation’s dedicated committee is working harder than ever to make wonders for wildlife through fundraising, advocacy, research, education, and establishing an ongoing operation of a native wildlife hospital.

A child’s pull-along toy. Pre plastic toys.

Like to read? There are plenty of local history books focused on Samford and surrounding districts covering topics of the earliest days of settlement, local schools (yes, there were one teacher schools in various locations), the horror story that lead to the culprit being the last man hanged in Queensland, WW2 in Pine Rivers and the American Army to name a few. Now let’s not forget those published by The SDH Museum Society Inc, Samford Reminiscences, the 1947 Camp Mt Rail Crash, and Camp Mt quarry which can be purchased for reading in idle moments. An admission of $5 for adults and $1 for school children makes for an economical visit just a few minutes drive away. Oh, the price on the Golden Fleece bowser is a little cheaper than on self-serve pumps today! For further information email info@samfordmuseum.com.au, call 3289 2743 or find us at 21 Station Street, Samford Village on Wednesday and Sundays 10am-4pm.

Primarily, the hospital’s function is emergency veterinary care. It will be set up as a triage clinic; once the animal is stabilised, it can be sent either to a carer for rehabilitation or onto Australia Zoo/RSPCA for specialised care and surgery if required. The approximately 14, 000 square-metred space will accommodate for a hospital building, outdoor enclosures, food preparation area, and parking. The hospital site is surrounded by core koala habitat of approximately 134, 500 square metres. The hospital location is very accessible via the local road network, a must for ensuring that animal can reach the hospital quickly. On behalf of Echo News, as well as the people—and the little critters—of our region, a huge thanks is issued to all those involved in the development of this hospital. The positive impact of your efforts will be mammoth.

The Seniors’ Expo was a tremendous success, with close to 2,000 visitors and over 100 stalls. I’d like to thank all the members of the Dickson Seniors’ Council for their tireless work in organising the event and congratulate them on continuing to make the Expo bigger and better each year. I started the Dickson Seniors Expo in 2004 with the help of the Dickson Senior’s Council to support seniors in our local

community. Every year since, I have been proud to host and sponsor the event.

Thank you also to the army of volunteers who make this local event such huge a success. I look forward to seeing you all again at the 2024 Dickson Seniors Expo.

Local Shows

This year’s Dayboro, Samford and Pine Rivers shows were a great success with great weather to match. I hope you enjoyed your visit to one or more of the shows.

Congratulations to all the Show Societies who work tirelessly all year to organise these events.

Educational resources

Once again, my children’s charts were popular at the recent shows and festivals. I'm particularly excited to mention that our latest addition, the Australia map received an overwhelming response.

Just a reminder that these educational resources to help your youngsters with schoolwork are available free from my electorate office in Strathpine. Contact details below.

They include multiplication and alphabet charts, growth charts and of course the Australia map.

Australian National Flag Day

Australian National Flag Day took place on Sunday 3 September 2022, marking 122 years since the Australian flag was first flown in 1901 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. Australian National Flag Day has been officially celebrated every year since 1996, following a proclamation by the Governor-General.

Our flag inspires love of country, gratitude to our forebears, loyalty to our nation, and dedication to its future when it matters most.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day

On 18th August, we commemorate Vietnam Veterans' Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War.

I was honoured to be invited to lay a wreath at the commemoration service at Gaythorne RSL to pay respect to all who served.

Inflation / Cost of Living

New Consumer Price Index numbers released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics have revealed Queensland recorded the biggest increases in the country last financial year for the big four cost-of-living responsibilities for state governments: Rent (QLD: 8.9% increase), Electricity (QLD: 25.4% increase), Health costs (QLD: 6.7% increase), Insurance (QLD: 17.1% increase)

Housing, electricity, health and insurance premiums are critical responsibilities of the State Government

These are the big bills Queenslanders are now paying due to the systemic service delivery failures of this Government. The Palaszczuk Government’s failure to properly...

1) Increase housing supply has driven up rents.

2) Maintain the State’s power plants like Callide has driven up power prices.

3) Plan and resource the health system over the past decade has driven up health costs.

4) Strengthen laws, created the Queensland Youth Crime Crisis which is now so out of control it’s driven insurance premiums.

Queenslanders deserve a calm and stable government that will bring their household costs down, not push them up.

THE FERNY REPORT

Body Corporate Law Changes

The Queensland Government has introduced legislation which will significantly update the rights of bodies corporate to make all residents’ lives more liveable. The changes will, amongst others will include:

• Allow bodies corporate to make by-laws that prohibit smoking (including vapes) on common property or an outdoor area such as a balcony.

• Make clear that regularly exposing a person in another unit or on common property to second-hand smoke is an unreasonable hazard.

• Prevent bodies corporate from making by-laws blanketbanning pets in community titles schemes.

• Enhance the ability for bodies corporate to tow vehicles from common property in a timely manner.

Acting on Sunset Clauses

The Queensland Government has also taken a significant step towards strengthening protections for Queenslanders buying land ‘off the plan’ and improving liveability for the growing number of people residing in body corporate communities. There have been many reports of developers invoking a ‘sunset clause’ to terminate an ‘off the plan’ contract, allegedly in order to re-list and sell the proposed lot for a much higher price. This has left home buyers out of pocket and without a home.

The government is proposing limits on when property developers can invoke a ‘sunset clause’ to terminate ‘off the plan’ contracts for land to situations where the written consent of the buyer has been provided, the Supreme Court has issued an order or in another situation prescribed by regulation.

The ‘off the plan’ purchasing reforms will strengthen buyer protections by limiting when sunset clauses can be used to terminate ‘off the plan’ contracts for the sale of land. The Bill will also confirm that sellers, often property developers, cannot gain early access to deposits under ‘off the plan’ contracts.

Local School Construction Updates

Construction on Oakleigh State School’s Multi-Purpose Hall is well underway with pre work now underway and foundations for the hall soon to be laid.

The final plan for the Ferny Hills State School Amenities Block has now been finalised. Construction will commence in Term 4.

The major upgrade at Mitchie Special School is nearly complete with part of the new building already being used while the finishing touches to the remainder of the construction now being applied.

Is Collagen Worth the Hype?

As an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Nutritionist, I am often asked about the health benefits of collagen supplementation. Here are the facts about collagen so you can decide whether it’s right for you.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It can be thought of as the glue that holds us together because it is the main component of connective tissues such as skin, bone, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. It is made in our bodies when the protein we eat is broken down into amino acids.

As we get older, collagen production decreases and results in reduced elasticity in our skin, evidenced by fine lines and wrinkles, as well as changes to the way our bodies move, such as reduced flexibility and range of motion in our joints. UV exposure and stress can also slow down the production of collagen in our bodies. Unfortunately, the first five years of menopause can see a 30 per cent decline in skin collagen and it continues to decline by around 2 per cent each subsequent year.

Collagen is found in the connective tissue of animals, therefore dietary sources are foods like red meat, chicken, and seafood. However, our bodies also require vitamin C, zinc and copper to make collagen, so eating foods such as citrus, dairy, legumes, wholegrains, avocado, eggs and leafy greens are beneficial to boost your collagen production. This means a having balanced diet including all the major food groups is a great way to support your body to make collagen. There’s a growing body of research into collagen supplementation which shows it can be beneficial for improving joint functionality and reducing joint pain(1). Other studies have shown hydrolysed collagen supplementation can have favourable results compared to a placebo in terms of skin hydration, elasticity, and hydration after 3 months (Ref 2 below).

Common collagen supplements are from bovine and marine sources. Vegetarian collagen supplements may contain ingredients that support your body’s own production of collagen. The most important thing to keep in mind is that there’s no point taking collagen or other supplements if you aren’t eating a healthy balanced diet to begin with. In summary, the good news is, there’s no harm in collagen supplementation if it fits within your budget. However, it can take up to 12 weeks before you notice any changes, so don’t expect overnight results.

Enhancing Lives Dynamic

Podiatry's Dedication to a Pain-Free, Active Lifestyle

In 2005, Matt and Vicki Hayter established Dynamic Podiatry, driven by a growing need for foot and ankle care in the community.

Over the years, the clinic has expanded to include a team of three skilled podiatrists who share a common passion: helping people of all ages lead active and fulfilling lives. By combining their expertise with the latest technology, they strive to diagnose, treat, and prevent lower limb issues, all while maintaining a friendly and professional approach.

A lot has changed in the area over those 18 years, with the new development at the Ferny Grove train station, new estates in Upper Kedron and The Quarry about to be built in Keperra. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to high quality foot care with a focus on family.

These days we are sometimes seeing the children of people who were brought in as children by their parents when we first opened! We love the small part we are able to play for families across generations, to help them live active and fulfilling lifestyles. Whether it’s cutting toenails and treating corns for grandparents, helping to heal plantar fasciitis (heel pain) in 30-something -year-olds, to helping little ones with gait issues or even getting rid of those pesky verruca (plantar warts), we’re here for you.

We also incorporate the latest technological advancements, including 3D laser foot scanners, Doppler Ultrasound with PPG for blood flow assessments and the Sensor Medica Treadmill which boasts a high speed camera integrated with a pressure detecting base which can show areas of the feet which are exposed to too much force.

However, it’s still all about the personal connection. Our team prides itself on being approachable and relatable, ensuring that patients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and developing their treatment path with us. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of trust and partnership between patients and practitioners, making the journey to pain-free living much smoother.

We have enjoyed wonderful support from the community over the past 18 years, and we hope to be helping local families with their foot care needs for many more years.

If you’d like to make an appointment please call: 3351 8878 or you can book online at www.dynamicpodiatry.com.au. Dynamic Podiatry is located at 135 Ferny Way, Ferny Hills.

Award Winning Physio Delivering Innovative Healthcare to Brisbane's Northside

Husband and wife team, Sam Bhojwani and Yamini Kapoor are the proud directors of IntegratePHYSIO, an award-winning physiotherapy business that is delivering innovative healthcare solutions on Brisbane’s northside.

IntegratePHYSIO, launched in 2017, is a musculoskeletal and sports injury outpatient service with clinics at Warner, Narangba and North Lakes and 18 dedicated employees. The business is also successfully growing its mobile service, Physio on Wheels and bringing allied health care to people in their own homes. Physio on Wheels has grown by over 300 percent in the past six months by delivering high-quality care at a fraction of the cost, competing against larger participants in the NDIS allied health.

The entire IntegratePHYSIO business has grown by up to 400% in terms of revenue and staff. This growth has supported Yamini’s passion to create a focused Women’s Health Physiotherapy for her patients and team. With only a small selection of clinics offering women’s specialised services on Brisbane’s northside, many travel to the city and wait up to six months before seeing a consultant, which is also a very expensive experience. This long-awaited addition to IntegratePHYSIO provides a valuable service for women, including pelvic examinations, pre-and post-natal physiotherapy, and treatment for bladder issues and mastitis.

Yamini and Sam acknowledge their success is because of their exceptional and growing team, plus their focus on mentoring and professional development of their staff. This has allowed the expansion of their services they provide to include women’s health, hydrotherapy and exercise physiology.

IntegratePHYSIO’s team collectively has about 80 years of clinical experience and helped more than 25,000 clients. They now see 400-500 clients a week, including their community clients.

Sam and Yamini’s passion to grow a business that provides high quality customer service and care, that is evidencebased and cost-effective delivered a complete surprise for them both when not only did they win the Moreton Daily Award for Customer Service Excellence at the Moreton Bay Business & Innovation Awards in July, but they also took home the 2023 Moreton Bay Business of the Year award. “It was very unexpected, we were excited just to win the customer service category,” Sam says. “It was all a huge surprise.”

We provide the following services:

• Physiotherapy

• Women’s health physiotherapy

• Physio on Wheels

• Manual therapy

• Hydrotherapy

• Exercise physiology

• Ergonomic assessments

Bringing JOY to the Community

For the past four years a group of locals – whose ages range from 55 to 90 - have been meeting every week for exercise, fun and a lot of laughter.

It’s called JOY – Just Older Youth – exercise classes for the over 55’s. Local business Enhance PT offer these low to moderate intensity exercise classes that have been designed specifically for people who are 55 and above. The classes focus on increasing balance, strength, and flexibility as well as the improvement of general fitness levels, as Miranda Pardon, owner/operator of Enhance PT explains.

"It's not inevitable that people of a certain age won’t be capable of doing things. There's a lot of research out there that suggests feeling good about ageing and about ourselves can actually help us to live more positively and longer," says Miranda.

“Ageing can bring challenges and not all of life is within in our control. However, there's a lot that we can do. We are extremely passionate about keeping our more mature population moving freely, living stronger and living independently for as long as possible. Our JOY classes have had a big positive social affect in that they are a community within a community. Members look out for one another and if someone is missing from class we will text or phone them to check if they are okay or need help.”

At Enhance PT, some of their clients have reconnected with friends they had lost contact with, while others have formed new friendships and bonds. Miranda explains that the social interaction that comes with attending these types of classes can have such a positive impact on both physical and mental health.

Enhance PT has been working with this age group for several years now, which Miranda feels is super important. According to research, injuries after 55 can be life-changing and exercise prescription must be tailored to suit ageing bodies and be delivered by an experienced instructor. Exercise can assist in many age-related changes and can help hone muscles and joints. Remember, it’s never too late to start. Lymphatic drainage massage is a form of gentle massage that encourages the movement of lymph fluids around the body. The fluid in the lymphatic systems helps remove waste and toxins from the bodily fluids. You won’t believe the difference in improved energy, effective fat loss, health, relaxation and many more positives.

The Secret Behind Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Your journey to better health and fat loss begins here with the Lymphatic Massage and a specialised fitness training system.

We know many factors can contribute to not feeling and looking your best. What a few of us don't realise is that our body has its own hidden transport and septic system made up of lymph veins, over 700 nodes, ducts and other tissues that works for us 24/7. They remove damaging toxins and waste that are hiding in your fat cells making weight loss much more difficult than it should be.

By removing toxins that fat cells hide within, you will enable your body to take out the trash and create a more efficient way to burn fat and keep your circulatory and immune system working so you can rise and shine to make every day your best.

The lymphatic system measures more than 100,000km in length and plays a powerful role in how we feel on a cellular and metabolic level. The lymph is a collection of over 10 litres of excess fluid that circulates through our system, which doesn’t have a pump like our heart. Therefore, our pathways need to remain clean and open to remove waste, dead blood cells, excess fluid, cancer cells, pollutants, pathogens and toxins. It relies on our muscles to contract and keep it moving. The lymph also transports oxygen, blood, fatty acids, hormones and nutrients to the cells that make up the tissues of your body.

What you may not realise is that excess weight can just be extra fluid that can be removed once the lymphatic system is working effectively. When in conjunction with exercises we can get in shape more quickly, recover from sickness, autoimmune diseases, surgery, stress or injury and can even prevent cancers from occurring.

Needless to say, in today’s world, if you want speedy results, you simply must start with revitalising your lymphatic system. An ideal way to do this is with the LymFATic Glove - a specialised sequence using magnetic haemotite balls that will leave you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to embrace optimum health.

Symptoms of blockages can occur throughout our whole body that include; chronic joint conditions, fluid retention, cancer, stress, hormonal problems and menopause, weight gain, sickness, cellulite, itchiness, chronic fatigue and IBS, to name but a few. Common triggers can come from; coffee, alcohol, pesticides, stress, grains, heavy metals and beauty products.

These days, more and more people are benefiting from adding a gentle Lymphatic massage into their health and wellness regimes to remove stagnant and blocked fluid. You won’t believe the difference in improved energy, effective fat loss, health, relaxation and many more positives. Try it today for the health of it at body.fitness.forever the one stop body shop. How to reduce common pregnancy symptoms

Are

you pregnant or planning a pregnancy?

The nutritional requirements of pregnancy are high, and many pregnancy symptoms and complications are associated with nutritional deficiencies. Court Garfoot Nutrition delivers a practical and scientifically-backed approach to take the stress out of meeting your nutritional requirements in conception, pregnancy and postpartum. Here are 5 pregnancy symptoms that can be prevented and managed by working with Court Garfoot Nutrition:

1. Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy

Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, also known as morning sickness, is among the most common symptoms women experience and can indicate nutritional deficiencies. Women who experience morning sickness are more likely to have insufficient intake and absorption of key nutrients needed in pregnancy.

2. Fatigue

Another common pregnancy symptom is fatigue. This can be due to poor nutritional intake, nutritional deficiencies, dehydration, reduced blood pressure and blood sugar and slower digestion. You may also find your sleep interrupted due to insomnia, heartburn or restless legs syndrome. These can all be addressed with some small dietary changes or supplements.

3. Food cravings and aversions

Cravings and aversions often go hand-in-hand during pregnancy and indicate various nutritional deficiencies. It’s not always obvious what these deficiencies are so it can be helpful to see a professional for some advice.

4. Constipation

Constipation in pregnancy can be problematic and unfortunately, if you have experienced constipation before pregnancy you’re more likely to experience constipation during pregnancy. You can help prevent or manage constipation by assessing your nutritional intake, addressing other factors that cause constipation and increasing the intake of foods containing natural laxatives before and during pregnancy.

5. Insomnia

More than 75% of mums will experience pregnancy insomnia, particularly towards the end of pregnancy. Good sleep quality is associated with better diet quality, which can be assisted by consuming foods high in tryptophan and magnesium.

Court Garfoot Nutrition delivers a practical and scientifically backed approach to nutrition for hormonal and reproductive health, fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum care to take the stress out of achieving your health goals. In particular, Manuka honey is considered especially effective for treating burns.

Get Your Skin Ready For Spring

Spring is the time shake off that coat of dry, itchy, flaky winter skin and instead aim for a healthy all over spring glow.

At Ebb & Flow Day Spa we have a variety of treatments and products to help you achieve a beautiful, glowing refreshing start to this welcomed warmer change of season. A slight change to your skin routine is needed for this transition so here’s a few spring tips to help you along on your skin’s journey:-

1. Exfoliate to reset your skin and rid it of excess dead skin cells. As the weather becomes hot and humid it is important to remove unwanted skins cells which can cause blocked pores resulting in lumps, bumps and acne issues on your face and back. We use Environ Cool Peel to treat facial skin they quickly exfoliate, smooth and promote collagen production to reboot your sleeping winter skin.

2. Antioxidants found in all fruit and vegetables play a very important part in fighting free radical damage to our cells. They help maintain a healthy glow and function to our skin and are part of the Environ’s Step Up System of moisturisers containing Vitamin A for retexturizing, Vitamin C for collagen production and brightening, and Vitamin E for plumping and hydrating.

3. Switch up your cleanser. It could be time to change your cleanser as these months bring extra outdoor activity. If you’re using a heavy cream or milky cleanser, you may prefer a low foaming gel or micellar water to remove unwanted sweat and pollution from your skin in the hotter months.

4. Step Up your Spf application. Using a UVA/UVB broad spectrum sunscreen daily is the most anti-aging thing you can do, especially as we head into the hotter part of the year. Hydrate! Drink plenty of water 6- 8 glasses a day to help with a spring reset by flushing unwanted toxins from your body, keeping your skin clear and radiant.

5. Nourish! Add a nourishing mask to your skincare routine once or even twice a week as a booster treatment to feed your skin. Not just your face but also your body needs nourishing. Try a vitamin oil or antioxidant body moisturizer, especially after exfoliating to get your spring glow on! Pop in and see us for a Spring Refresh to kick start you on your skin and wellness journey!

Adult ADHD - Achieve Your Potential

Did you know?

• References to ADHD appear in medical textbooks dating back to 1775

• There are over 100,000 scientific journal articles that provide insight into ADHD

• Around 1 in every 20 Australians is affected by ADHD Yet, this common mental health condition is widely misunderstood.

Attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) starts during child development and frequently persists into adulthood. It runs in families and there are two subtypes and a combined presentation.

If you have the inattentive subtype, it will manifest as limited attention span, careless errors, distractibility, and forgetfulness. You struggle to sustain attention, lose focus, and easily get side-tracked. You have trouble organizing tasks and prioritizing activities, and although you start several projects, many go unfinished. You tend to procrastinate on tasks that are taxing. Time management is a challenge. You often misplace things, and your mind wanders off when others are speaking. Things that do interest you, you can hyperfocus on them to the exclusion of all else. But for most things you may quietly stare out of the window or be distracted by social media while your work goes unfinished. In your personal interactions, this 'spacey' or 'daydreamy' behavior may have been mischaracterized as laziness or apathy or irresponsibility, leading to frequent arguments, anger outbursts and trouble coping with stress.

If you have the hyperactive-impulsive subtype you may feel

restless a lot of the time, fidgeting and squirming more than others. You may talk non-stop and be loud and boisterous. You may butt into other people’s conversations and finish other’s sentences. You may be impatient and find boredom intolerable. For many adults the hyperactive symptoms do settle with age.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, hyperactive children are often seen to be disruptive in class and easily draw the attention of teachers. However, the inattentive subtype is far less likely to be recognized by parents, teachers, and medical professionals. Without a diagnosis, necessary treatment is not provided leading to anger, frustration, apathy, and shame in many walks of life, casting a shadow that can last a lifetime. However, it is never too late to get help. If any of the symptoms listed above continually disrupt your life, talk to your General Practitioner about whether you might have ADHD. Request a referral to a Psychiatrist for an Adult ADHD assessment. There are evidence based effective pharmacological and psychological treatments available which may help you realize your true potential.

Local medical clinic, Keperra Medical Centre is delighted to welcome Associate Professor Dr Manaan Kar Ray to the fold. Dr Manaan is a visiting Consultant Psychiatrist and is trained in Adult Psychiatry in Oxford. He has extensive knowledge and experience within this sector and was the Director for Mental Health Services in Cambridge, UK for a decade before moving to Brisbane.

For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call Keperra Medical Practice on 3355 4082.

Protect The Skin You're In

Queensland's breathtaking landscapes and abundant sunshine make it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. However, amidst the splendor lies a potential health threat that requires our attention: Skin Cancer.

As a state with one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, it's imperative that we prioritize prevention and early detection to safeguard our skin and well-being.

The Sun-Smart Approach: Prevention is Paramount

The age-old campaign Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide remains so relevant today. Slip on protective clothing, slop on sunscreen with a high SPF, slap on a wide-brimmed hat, seek shade during peak hours, and slide on sunglasses to shield your eyes.

Early Detection: A Lifesaving Practice

Know Your Skin: Familiarize yourself with your skin's normal appearance. Regularly check your skin for any new or changing spots, moles, or lesions.

SCAN Your Skin: Utilize the SCAN method - Sore, Changing, Abnormal, New - to recognize potential signs of skin cancer. Any sore that doesn't heal, changing moles, abnormal growths, or new spots (especially if you are over 40yrs ) should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Professional Skin Checks: Annual skin checks by a doctor trained in Skin Cancer Medicine are a proactive step in detecting skin cancer. Experts can identify subtle changes that might not be apparent to the untrained eye.

Promote Self-Care: Encourage family and friends to prioritize skin health. Empower each other to perform selfexaminations and share any concerns for timely intervention.

Queensland's sunny climate is a gift, but it comes with a responsibility to protect our skin from its potential harm. By embracing sun-smart strategies, encouraging early detection practices, and fostering a culture of skin health awareness, we can collectively reduce the impact of skin cancer in our beloved state. Remember, prevention and early detection are not just steps – they are lifesaving habits that ensure our well-being for years to come.

If you are looking for a local expert in this field, give Keperra Medical Centre a call on 3355 4082. The team is delighted to welcome Skin Cancer expert Dr Taz Zamani to their family. Dr Zamani graduated medicine from the University of Queensland and is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). Since graduating, he has obtained additional training in skin cancer medicine and is now a dedicated Skin Cancer Doctor and a member of the Skin Cancer College of Australasia (SCCA). Dr. Zamani is experienced in detection of skin cancers and offers both surgical and non-surgical treatment of skin lesions and cosmetic mole removals. He visits Keperra Medical Centre twice weekly and appointments are available without a referral.

Medicare records show there were over a million treatments for squamous and basal cell carcinoma skin cancers in 2018 –that’s more than 100 skin cancer treatments every hour. For more info, visit www.sunsmart.com.au

Healthy Mouth - Healthy Body

The mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body! Taking care of your oral health is much more than brushing teeth twice a day and flossing. There are many things you can do to maintain a healthy mouth and body! Here are some helpful suggestions:

Avoid sugary sticky foods & frequent snacking, high sugar foods get stuck to your teeth and snacking lowers the PH in your mouth which makes it more susceptible to decay.

Rinse with water after meals – Don’t let acidic food and drink sit on your teeth; his includes fresh fruit (pineapple, oranges, tomatoes, grapes, lemons & limes) and occasional treats (wine, cider, kombucha, apple & orange juice).

Follow an anti-inflammatory diet to reduce inflammation in your gut and gums. Avoid generic / supermarket mouthwashes, they kill all bacteria, eliminating your much-needed good bacteria.

Trouble sleeping or waking up unrefreshed? Consult your GP to investigate any sleep disorders. Poor sleep causes daytime tiredness & irritability, low energy, decreased libido, digestive issues, depression/anxiety, headaches/migraines, poor circulation, reflux, and links to teeth grinding.

Check your vitamin levels- they help to maintain good gut and oral health eg. Vit K – regulates blood calcium levels & aids in healthy blood clotting. Vit D3 – strengthens bones & muscles, reduces inflammation, boots immunity. You can check your vitamin levels easily by getting a blood test through your GP.

Do you have difficulty breathing through your nose? If so, a consult with an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist to check for airway obstructions can be life changing. The correct & healthy way to breath is through your nose as it helps the immune system by filtering out billions of particles of foreign matter every day before they reach your lungs. Mouth breathing also dries your mouth which irritates your gums and increases the chance of tooth decay, we need saliva to protect our teeth and gums. Has this reminded you that you’re due for your dental visit. Call the friendly team at Admire Dentistry Arana Hills and book you consultation today! 30641044 or book online at www.admiredentistry.com.au

Healthy Snacks recommended by your local dentist

Fresh water – do not add lemon as this creates an acidic environment which attacks your teeth

Carrot – Carrots are a great natural cleanser for your teeth, and the high content of vitamin A and Keratin also help to attack dental plaque

Almonds – strengthen enamel as they are full of calcium

Flaxseeds – great for dental health as they are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, which reduces inflammation.

Thinking of a smoothie? Combine flaxseeds, strawberries, unsweetened natural yoghurt, cucumber, and spinach. You’ve got yourself a smoothie that can help keep your gums healthy

HOG Springs into Action

An update from the Hills Organic Garden

We have had a rather mild winter this year hence we have been able to take produce home with us much earlier than normal. The warmer weather has matured our plants much more quickly than last year and produced some very nice vegetables. Our cabbages have been delicious. Our beans and peas are fresh and crunchy, and we have had some lovely bunches of bananas.

Our members have been turning up each Sunday enthusiastic and ready to work and look forward to filling their baskets with fresh produce from the garden.

We are still planting snow peas and lettuce as well as beans as we feel we will get another crop before the hot weather is upon us. This year our snow peas were being eaten by some predator which we have not experienced in previous years. If anyone has some knowledge of what this might be could you kindly let us know. We could not find any trace of a grub on the affected produce.

Our beetroots have been eaten by some unwelcomed visitor – perhaps a rat or bandicoot?? as have some of our cabbages. Silverbeet is flourishing and is so fresh and tender. Our strawberries are just starting to produce fruit. We have had to cover the strawberries as our resident magpie was taking bites out of the fruit. A scrub turkey has also made its presence felt at the garden. Not really a welcome visitor as they can be quite destructive.

Spring is just around the corner and hopefully we have a couple of months of pleasant weather for gardening before the heat of summer sets in. Our flowering basil is still attracting the bees and we should be able to harvest some seeds when the plant dries. Our parsley is also looking very healthy.

The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance.

You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors. Visit www.hog. org.au, search The Hills Organic Garden on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information. We look forward to meeting you.

Fertilise for a Fruitful Garden

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

Spring has sprung and the time has come to fertilise. Most garden plants will be putting on new growth in the coming months which means their need for nutrients and water will increase dramatically. As growth begins to step up, fertilise and mulch the garden generally. Be sure to use a low-phosphorus fertiliser for sensitive natives such as grevilleas and banksias and keep water up to actively growing plants.

Last month, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club convened on August 3rd, when green thumbs and plant enthusiasts were treated to an enlightening session on the art of brewing herbal teas. The morning featured guest speaker, Rose Graham, a renowned herbalist from the Queensland Herb Society Inc., who shared her wealth of knowledge about the benefits and flavours of herbal teas. The meeting kicked off with a warm welcome from the club’s president, Trish Parkinson, who expressed her delight at the turnout and the opportunity to learn from an expert like Rose Graham. Rose, with her years of experience in herbalism and a passion for all things botanical, captivated the audience with her informative and engaging presentation. She began by introducing the concept of herbal teas and emphasized their natural origins and potential health benefits. The attendees were treated to a fascinating journey through various herbs and plants that can be used to create flavourful and therapeutic infusions. Two brews shared on the day were: rosemary, cinnamon and lemon myrtle; and parsley, mint and ginger – both so enlivening and delicious!

The September meeting of the Ferny Grove Garden Club will be on Friday, 29th September, at 1 pm. The club meets in St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. At the September meeting the group are looking forward to a helpful talk from Bunnings horticulturists on the use of mulches and composts in the garden. For more information please telephone Elizabeth 07 3851 0568.

Our September meeting will be focussed on Plant and Tree Health. John Daly is our guest speaker for the month, and he will be sharing his invaluable knowledge and advice on how best to prevent or treat disease, while promoting the robust health of our gardens.

Go get ‘em, gardeners!

The club meets at The Enoggera Memorial Hall at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Entry is $3 and morning tea is provided. Visitors are most welcome. For more information email at mitcheltongc@gmail.com
