Local Initiative Nourishing Our Community

In the heart of the Hills, on 82 Dawson Parade, a kernel of generosity shines from the cherished Dawson Pde Community Library and Pantry. Birthed from the shared vision and kindness of local couple Claudia and Peter, the initiative first graced our lively streets on December 18, 2023.

Originally, there was only a library, equip to this day with books of many flavours and sizes. But as the ever-worsening cost of living crisis began to press harder upon themselves and their neighbours, Claudia and Peter soon tapped into our community’s unmet hunger by adding the pantry.

‘I felt quite despairing about the big issues,’ Claudia shares with Echo News. ‘This is one small thing I could do to hopefully make a positive impact on the community.’

And so the Community Pantry and Library emerged—a testament to the power of the couples’ collective action. From pasta, soups, cereals, canned goods and breads to the ever-reliable long-life milk and other non-perishables, each pantry-themed shelf is adorned with staples of sustenance and comfort—all generously donated by locals.

One local in particular, Paul from grassroots charity organisation Northwest Community Group Inc, is a frequent donator of bread rolls. Paul’s partnership with the pantry began when Claudia noticed his call out on Facebook, seeking volunteers to help with outreach stalls. In return for regular pantry top-ups, Claudia agreed to offer him a helping hand whenever possible.

So far, Dawson Pde Community Library and Pantry

has been a hit with locals, emptying and restocking in the blink of an eye. A few times over, both the library and the pantry have been filled to capacity! Only temporarily, of course.

Claudia also notes that in the future, she plans to add a small garden of herbs and flowers to the humble display.

She shares, ‘We hope to give the community a sense of belonging. Everyone is welcome to use the pantry with no judgement. The pantry doesn’t belong to us, it belongs to the community. We just started it.’

To show your support for struggling locals in these uncertain and challenging times, head on down to Dawson Pde Community Pantry and Library. You can also find them on Facebook by searching ‘Dawson Pde Community Library and Pantry’. Together, we can make all the difference.

Lights Dimmed and Local Issue Illuminated

Late-night journeys to Ferny Grove Station just got cosier, thanks to a recent development that's dimming the worries of nearby residents.

It was late January when Echo News caught wind of the raised concerns regarding Ferny Grove Station’s perpetually bright lights. As per Queensland Rail reference CFT-23-2871, a dimmer system had been installed to reduce the harsh lighting overnight. However, there was no evidence that it had been activated—or installed, for that matter.

In true journalistic fashion, Echo News turned to Queensland Rail themselves for answers, hoping to ease the minds of local residents. Fast forward three months, and our long wait for answers is over! Confirmation has arrived, straight from the desk of Queensland Rail's Head of South East Queensland, Neil Backer. Becker’s statement read,‘Queensland Rail has installed an automatic dimmer system at the entrance and levels two to six of the new Ferny Grove station carpark which activates later in the evening. We recognise the importance of balancing any environmental impacts of our assets with the security of those using the carpark. This system reduces lighting pollution on neighbouring properties without compromising a well-lit environment for customers to safely return to their vehicles. The dimmer system is now fully operational, and we apologise for any discomfort the previous lighting may have caused the community.’

Echo News is delighted to finally close the case on the toobright lights at the station and release this good news to the community.

Community Reflections: Seeking Kindness Amidst Turmoil

The recent events in NSW and Victoria have given rise to this month’s.

We have seen the best and worst in Australians with the recent murders and stabbings. It’s happening all over Australia and I wonder why someone’s brain snaps, why someone becomes radicalized and what is the tipping point that triggers their extreme actions?

Would some gesture of kindness or inclusiveness from one to another – at an important time have helped these people to live a different life?

Most people receive their initial sense of community, what's right, and what’s wrong from their family. This progresses to the extended family, maybe church, school, friends, etc – it’s a lived experience.

If, for some reason, that lived/learned experience is broken down by a fractured family structure, friendships, a loss of belonging, lack of community, drugs, and self-interest, it’s possible to see how someone could snap.

I believe ‘Gratitude’ is such a great word. We all need to be grateful for the great things we have in our lives and never take the little things for granted.

I think that’s why I like being a Lions International Club Member – we use simple things to raise money to help the community such as; sausage sizzles, christmas cakes, raffles, coffee shop sales. We meet and interact with the community daily, offering an ear to listen, a hand to help, a smile, and financial assistance when needed.

This financial year we have assisted; children to attend their

school camps, the Grovely State School Breakfast Club, the Samford Riding for the Disabled, helped out at Agoonaree Scout Camp for children with disabilities, plus so many other initiatives.

This month, we would also like to welcome new members, Cherie Wolf and Rebecca Kleid – welcome to GVK!

Our club has a goal to establish a young people's group of 20+ years of age, operating independently, to carry out community service projects they are passionate about. Your indication of interest would be most welcome so please get in touch i by emailing cottontrees@bigpond.com. Furthermore, if you have a little time to help us do more in our community – give me a call. I’d love to have a chat over a coffee 0409 688 675

A Red Hot Ride To End DV

For Randall Macey getting out on his motorbike is a big part of his life. So when he saw a post about the Moreton Bay Red Ride come up on his Facebook feed a few years ago, he knew it was something he wanted to support.

After riding in the 2022 and 2023 events and already living within the local area, Randall decided to join the committee and be a part of organising the next ride. The 2024 Moreton Bay Red Ride is on Saturday 18th May and will once again be a scenic ride to spread the word about putting a stop to domestic violence.

A rider for many years, Randall participates in several charity rides throughout the year and will hit the road on his trusty Cruiser motorcycle for the Red Ride.

‘Supporting a worthy cause but also just being out there and being part of the biking community is important to me,’ Randall says. Creating awareness is a big focus of the Red Ride with participants encouraged to wear red or even add the flag featuring the event emblem to their bike. Starting at the Caboolture Showground, the ride will also head out to Redcliffe travelling back through Strathpine, out to Mount Samford and Dayboro

and on to Woodford, Peachester, Beerburrum and ending back at the showground where there will be show and shine, entertainment and fun activities.

‘It’s not just about the ride, it’s also about getting people together and to mingle, talk and have some fun,’Randall says. ‘Come and join in the spanner or helmet toss. Check out the cars and bikes on show, have something to eat or just make a donation if you can. Come along and enjoy the day.’

Funds raised will be donated to organisations that provide services and support to victims of domestic violence. The Red Ride serves to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence and to promote a culture of non-violence and respect for all. This is an opportunity for riders to join in on a charity motorbike ride, to hit the open road and raise funds for a great cause.

Don’t miss all the action of the 2024 Moreton Bay Red Ride on Saturday 18th May kicking off at the Caboolture Showground. For further information about the event or to become a sponsor, visit www. redride.org

Brisbane couple swap the bayside for The Quarry’s picturesque views

‘Lifestyle

seekers’ to build dream home at Brisbane’s most elevated community

A Brisbane couple will live the best of both worlds when they begin building their ‘dream home’ with views to the D’Aguilar Range and beyond at Frasers Property Australia’s $500M masterplanned community, The Quarry at Keperra, while keeping their large waterfront home on the shores of Moreton Bay.

Russell Island residents Eileen and Thomas Neigenfind will retain their island home but relocate to enjoy lifestyle closer to family at The Quarry, ideally located just 9.5 km from the CBD.

Ms Neigenfind said the pair found The Quarry after a sixmonth search for land, falling in love with the idyllic lifestyle of Brisbane’s most elevated community.

‘The Quarry is different to everything else we’d seen, and the perfect place for us to build our dream home,’ she said.

‘Frasers Property is establishing a new neighbourhood which embraces the landscape, with trees along the hillside to give that traditional feeling of open space and privacy.

‘We love that there are areas dedicated to the environment and we can’t wait for the natural amphitheatre to finish. The space and the views will be spectacular.’

Ms Neigenfind said their four-bedroom, three-bathroom home design was simple and modern to suit their lifestyle needs.

‘We’ve spent a lot of time renovating over the years and it’s so great that we don’t have to do anything when we move in. We can now spend that quality time with our son on the weekends,’ she said.

‘We are really excited about moving into The Quarry and look forward to seeing the community develop over the next stages with new homes being built and the fantastic amenity spaces coming to life with residents.’

Spanning 48.7 hectares, The Quarry features a mix of about 500 home and land sites, terrace homes, extensive landscaping and resort style amenity.

Scott Ullman, General Manager Queensland Development at Frasers Property Australia, said The Quarry had been popular with local buyers.

‘The Brisbane community understands how truly special this site is and appreciates The Quarry’s irreplaceable uniqueness in the Brisbane property market and beyond,’ he said.

‘With over 80% of Release One and Two now sold, we recently launched a collection of 28 elevated homesites which is responding very well in market.

‘This special release includes ridgeline lots with expansive mountainous views, private east-facing parcels and entry-level blocks with northerly aspects.

‘From upgrading and building dream homes, to downsizing for a low maintenance lifestyle, our buyers recognise the value of our quality product, exclusive amenities and stunning views right across the community.’

The existing Keperra Quarry, which mines granite, has operated for more than 60 years and will progressively curb operations as the development of the residential stages advance.

Prices for available lots at The Quarry start from $585,000. For more information, visit www.quarrykeperra.com.au

Young Actors Slow Crawl to Full-Speed Ahead Stardom

A Fitness-Focussed Resolution That’s

We’ve all seen the exhilarating new film adaptation of Trent Dalton’s award-winning novel Boy Swallows Universe. But have you heard Behind the Scenes intel from one of the actors themselves?

tness.forever

If you’ve been tuning into Echo News’ fresh podcast, Talk of the Town, you might have! Otherwise, let us introduce to you Jake Cockburn, the 11-year-old born-to-be actor who portrays the character Gus in the film.

Quick empowering workouts to help you be the best you can be everyday for everybody.

At just 6 years of age, Jake decided he was destined for the silver screen. Having already developed a passion for the stage through years of dancing and performing, Jake was ankle-deep in the industry. He just had to make the leap and fully submerge himself in the world of acting.

Exercise is medicine and along with a manageable eating and lifestyle plan you will see the change and feel the difference. This is not Bootcamp but a sustainable way to live in your body and love your life.

Securing representation with Agency 888 proved instrumental—a partnership that endures to this day. Jake initially lacked formal training, but kickstarted his journey with modest gigs such as a Wet n Wild commercial and Sea World’s Spooky Nights campaign. However, it was his selftape audition for Boy Swallows Universe that catapulted him into the spotlight. Following a callback in person, Jake clinched his first major role, playing selectively mute character Gus. Beyond Boy Swallows Universe, Jake’s acting repertoire boasts a variety of other smaller gigs, ranging from commercials to student films. Notable appearances include a stint in Tiger King and Young Rock 2. Since his breakout performance as Gus, Jake‘s career trajectory has only sky-rocketed, with recent ventures including a Channel 9 kids’ program (to be aired) and a role in a QFS commercial.

Life gets messy, busy, complicated and unpredictable sometimes. In the New Year, an ‘all or nothing’ approach to your New Year’s health focussed resolution just doesn’t last. So, incorporating a plan that is realistic and sustainable is of upmost importance.

Focusing on daily choices that are achievable and simple will create changes that don’t just last until March when your effort and energy has run out, but are long lasting. Here are 12 real-world ways that can help you achieve your health goals in 2024.

1. Eat protein for breakfast to keep your insulin levels steady and appetite satisfied.

2. Eat slow, chew your food.

3. Eat healthy meals. You will not lose weight by skipping two meals a day. Your body needs quality adequate calories from carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

4. Include exercise snacks in your day. Maybe one minute of steps, squats or wall pushups whenever possible. This keeps your energy levels boosted whilst burning calories.

in his trailer on the Boy Swallows Universe set

5. Learn about how food affects your body, so you can burn fat more efficiently.

6. Strength training is your secret weapon. Muscle preserves age, keeps you toned and takes up less space than fat.

‘The most rewarding part was getting to see myself on TV. I got to learning new skills as an actor and improving my acting ability. I also loved the different environment as all the crew knew what they were doing and I got to meet some awesome people that helped me throughout the whole journey,’ Jake explains.

7. Schedule exercise sessions for 20 or 30 minutes - you don’t need hours in the gym. Check in with yourself, show up and prepare the night before.

8. Plan for bad days. You can still succeed by doing what you need to do most of the time.

In his interview with Echo News, Jake reflects upon his experience filming his big break. Despite not having lines, due to his characters’ muteness, Jake found himself thrown into a whirlwind of challenging scenes alongside seasoned actors like Simon Baker. Jake shares, ‘The first scene that we shot was at night in a quarry... I am a strong swimmer, but I had to wear a full body suit with long PJs and shoes. It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be…There were divers in the water with me and three other boys that looked like me and young Eli that could step in for us if we were cold or scared, but they were not needed.’

Call Kim today for a quick chat and health check 0407 919 143

Amidst the rigors of production, Jake found solace in the camaraderie of his fellow cast and crew, as well as the opportunity to hone his craft to a professional standard alongside inspiring individuals.

9. Find your fit. You have everything you need inside of you to get you where you need to go.

10. Enjoy the journey. Make it part of your new lifestyle and enjoy what you do.

11. Sleep should be your priority. Getting adequate sleep reduces the amount of food people eat during the day and your food choices are wiser.

12. Getting adequate water is amazing for weight loss as a natural appetite suppressant and helps remove waste from your body.

Looking ahead, Jake remains steadfast in his pursuit of acting excellence, claiming 2024 as a year of ‘full steam ahead’ effort toward his blossoming career. He is currently engaging in weekly acting lessons with LeBlanc School of Acting in Canada while taking as many local courses as possible. While Jake may have his work cut out for him, the support of his friends and family serves as a constant source of encouragement. But none as great as that of his mother’s encouragement. Leanne Cockburn, her son’s biggest fan, shares her pride with Echo News: ‘Jake has come a long way from the little boy who had 3 years of weekly speech pathology. It always amazes me watching him be able to memorise a script in a night and take direction on set and how hard he works at this. Every time he does something he tells me it’s the best day of his life. He just loves it.’

A healthy resolution doesn’t need to focus on weight loss. Create a wellness resolution/goal to live a healthy, happier life on any day you decide to start.

Give local Fitness & Nutrition coach Kim a call on 0407 919 143 to help you achieve your New You in 2024.

And Echo News has loved hearing about Jake’s immense achievements in the world of acting. We wish our community’s youngest rising star the best of luck with all the opportunities sure to come his way!

Studio Cakes' Sarah Jane Delivers Super Session

An

update

from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Club

The April meeting of the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Club was a really busy and productive one. The team welcomed Sarah Jane from Studio Cakes at Mitchelton to the fold and she arrived with a magnificent decorated three-tier cake . This cake illustrated how finishes could be used in a Fairy themed cake. This was followed by atutorial on how to create the bark effect, the crackle effect, and the rough cement-like finish on the top tier. An huge thank you is extended to Sarah Jane for such an informative afternoon. The next meeting is on the 18th May and this will be a short business meeting followed by a demonstration by one of the members. Meetings are held at the Arana Hills Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills, commencing at 1pm. The club’s aim is to encourage the love of cake decorating in all its aspects and they love to share their knowledge with everyone. The meeting is followed by afternoon tea.

The Annual Cake Competition and Display is coming up in June with an exciting new venue at the Queen Alaxander House at Coorparoo. It will be on over three days from 21st to 23rd June. More details will follow shortly but it promises to be better than ever.

Details of the group are on our Facebook page if anyone is interested, Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail.com

Building Conversation Skills at MPC

Conversation skills are important for children’s development and wellbeing.

That’s because being able to have conversations helps children make friends, be listened to, ask for what they need and develop strong relationships with others. Conversation skills are about being able to talk and listen well (Raisingchildren. net.au, 2022).

As we begin our Kindy year at Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC) the art of conversation skills is so important to get to know our little people and you, our parents. Through conversation we are building a sense of trust and belonging, which is the core of getting to know one another. As your children see this adult interaction, they are gaining a sense that this is an okay place and that information is shared through reciprocal chatter, taking turns, waiting, and listening. They can see facial expressions, concern, serious, excited, enlightenment and perhaps hear some laughter, even sometimes tears. We are role modelling manners and greetings, listening with eye contact and listening quietly! As adults we have taken many years to perfect the art of conversation, and for some it still does not come easily. We have learned to accept the quiet and shy along with the brave and gregarious and even the rambunctious, it is an important social skill we deal with every day. In these early days of Kindy, we are beginning to build the art of listening and taking turns to share the very important information that must come out right now, or they might explode! We love our group conversations, and equally listening to a quiet one on one conversation when we are sitting beside your child, and they get to tell us a story. Listening and acknowledging

helps us to build that same sense of belonging and trust with your child as we do with you. Learning to wait at being one of twenty-two is enormous!

In our group sessions at times, we use our talking stick to take turns to say what is on our mind and then pass it to the next person. This is a reminder, it is my turn when the stick is in my hands, oh the power of a talking stick! Through the course of the day, when at play, gathering at transition times or morning tea and lunch, learning how to listen, talk and take turns at this stage is very much a time for practice. Learning to listen is vital to learning routines and hearing information that is needed for the flow of the day. The children may hear us say, ‘it is my turn to talk and your turn to listen’, ‘this is important information for you to remember’, ‘these are the instructions to follow’. Many occasions during the day the children will also hear us say, “Did you listen/hear what …just said to you”’ or “…is talking to you, can you help them or listen to what they are asking?” These conversations can revolve around a dilemma, an idea, a discovery or just a comment, but what is vital to learning about the art of good conversation is to learn to stop, look and listen.

Our role as educators and parents is to give the children the sense that what they have to say is important and needs to be acknowledged by listening to them. If we model these important behaviours, they will learn that the art of good conversation means, stopping, looking, and listening to the message that is being shared, and learn how to respond. I would encourage everyone to look at the article on the www. raisingchildren.net.au page for some good practical tips and reminders on conversation skills.

Willmore Kindergarten Celebrates First Nations Culture

Nestled amongst tall, leafy trees with beautiful natural outdoor spaces, Willmore Kindergarten & Preschool was founded in 1970 by the Ferny Hills community. Here, individuality is celebrated, children and families are loved, nurtured and heard, and everyone is accepted. This environment allows children to grow into passionate learners, brimming with curiosity. The team at Willmore recognises the transformative power of early childhood education and believe children are the changemakers of the world. It's through their understanding of our country and its origins that real connections and learnings can grow, and respect for First Nations people’s culture and history - the original storytellers and keepers of Country.

Each day begins with a heartfelt ritual – acknowledging the Turrbal people, the traditional custodians of the land where Willmore resides. Children gather in our special meeting space, where we hope to honour the Turrbal people’s traditional ways of caring for the environment,

from the tiniest worm to the largest tree, and show the children how to tread gently on this precious land we live and play on.

We align our curriculum with the national "BELONGING, BEING & BECOMING: The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia – V2.0," which emphasises the importance of embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in all educators' philosophy and practice. This approach advances reconciliation efforts, contributes to Closing the Gap commitments, and fulfills every Australian child's right to learn about First Nations' histories, knowledge systems, cultures, and languages.

Willmore translates this philosophy into engaging experiences that spark curiosity and connection with the land. Last term, the staff captivated the children with the beautiful story, "The Last Gundir" by Nayef Din, which revolves around the Bunya Nut festival. The children learned about the tradition of Aboriginal tribes coming together to celebrate the harvest of the Bunya nuts. They even held a real Bunya nut in their hands, marvelling at the fact that this ancient tree patiently waits 100 years to produce its first fruit.

We believe it's essential for their wellbeing and development to be connected to their environment and a keen eye for wonder is another cornerstone of Willmore's approach. During playtime, we discovered some squiggly lines etched on one of the beautiful trees in our space. As we wondered what it could be, little Alex said "I think it's a message from the Turrbal people. I think they are saying hello!"

By embedding First Nations stories and voices into our learning and play spaces, we hope to help our children become the storytellers of tomorrow. We want to ignite a lifelong awe of the beauty of the land we live on, and a deep respect for First Nations culture and Country.

Willmore is more than a classroom; we want the children in our care to grow with the knowledge of how to be empathic, thoughtful, considerate of others and their world, and to have a voice in their community which is valued.

Community Connection at Arana Netball

On Saturday the 23rd of March, Arana Netball held their inaugural Family Fun Day.

This was an a fun-filled afternoon with free sausage sizzle and games for our community to come together before the season started. It was great to see so many families come down and have fun together! The day boasted low-cost drinks and ice creams to raise money for the club, as well as a raffle which gifted the winner a $100 merch voucher. All Arana merch –including our bucket hats – can be purchased on training nights and can be worn to support all Arana Panthers sport teams. This day couldn’t have been done without the help of all of our committee working hard to put this day on, including our new social events sub-committee. As well as this, we would love to thank Arana Sports and the Arana Leagues Club for their support throughout the year. We look forward to holding this event in years to come and connecting more with our netball community!

Arana Netball’s season has just kicked off at Downey Park, with 10/14 competitive teams winning their games. This success couldn’t have been done without their amazing coaches, umpire and managers who work extremely hard to get the girls on the court. If passing the courts at Leslie Patrick Park, you will see Arana Netball working hard at training in the afternoons and at their games on Saturdays. Community is the key reason as to why Arana has been performing so well in recent years and we look forward to connecting more with the community, increasing participation and gaining more volunteers to allow us to have the best season we can! Preparations Begin for the Next Crop

An update from the Hills Organic Garden

It’s that time of year again – preparation time – where we must prepare the beds for fresh plantings. More soil, compost and fertilizer must be added to the gardens and of course there is crop rotation so we must ensure that different vegetables are planted in different beds this year.

The rain has affected the basil tree which was pruned back and hopefully it will rejuvenate and flower well as it attracts the bees which we need in our garden. The passionfruit vines are doing well as a result of all the rain we have received and hopefully we will get some nice fruit before the cockatoos discover them.

Planting of new seeds and seedlings will commence in the next couple of weeks. Some vegetables are best grown from seed to avoid transplant shock such as; carrots, peas, beans and radish Snow peas, beetroot, silver beet, baby spinach and tomatoes will be on the list of plantings and we look forward to getting them into the ground and watching them grow.

The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden.

Members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm and also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors.

Visit hog.org.au, search “The Hills Organic Garden” on Facebook or phone 0415 856532 for information. We look forward to meeting you

Butterflies: Nature's Delicate Beauties

An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

Butterflies are captivating creatures that grace our world with their delicate beauty. These winged wonders are not only stunning to behold but also play crucial roles in our gardens as pollinators and as part of the food chain.

Our Guest Speaker for April, Jutta Godwin from Brisbane’s Big Butterfly Count, introduced our members to some of the 160 different butterfly species recorded in the Brisbane area, in a fascinating talk about this graceful insect. Jutta

explained that butterfly habitat is declining as urban centres continue to grow. To help address this problem, Brisbane’s Big Butterfly Count works hard to educate gardeners and the public at large about protecting habitat and growing native larval host plants at home.

In suburban gardens and urban green spaces alike, butterflies add a touch of magic as they flit from flower to flower in search of nectar. Their presence reminds us that all living beings are interconnected and of the importance of preserving biodiversity. Next time you spot a butterfly, take a moment to appreciate its beauty and significance in our world.

Our next meeting at The Enoggera Memorial Hall (entrance via Trundle St) will be on Thursday 2 May at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Entry is $5.00 and morning tea is provided. Visitors are most welcome. Feel free to contact us via email at mitcheltongc@gmail.com for any further information or find us on Facebook @mitcheltongardenclub.

THE FERNY REPORT

Jobs & Energy Plan Secures Queensland’s Future Queensland’s clean economy future will be secured through our landmark Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan which we passed in Queensland Parliament last month. As a result of this legislation, we are making the biggest investment in clean energy and emissions reduction in Australian history. This is only possible because we kept Queensland’s public assets in public hands.

The transformation of Queensland’s energy grid will create more than 100,000 new jobs in manufacturing, renewable energy generation, power transmission and the industries of the future and will provide a world-first Job Security Guarantee for our energy workers.

Already we have hit our emissions reduction targets eight years ahead of schedule with a 30% reduction. To this we are now adding:

• 80% renewable energy generation by 2035, supporting the creation of over 100,000 new jobs.

• Powerful emissions reductions targets have also been entrenched in law – 75% by 2035.

• World-first guaranteed financial support, training, jobs as part of Job Security Guarantee.

Dangerous Dogs Legislation Passed

The Queensland Government has delivered on its pledge to institute tougher dangerous dog laws after the legislation passed last month.

Thousands of Queenslanders lodged formal submissions or completed surveys backing a tougher approach. The new laws mean irresponsible owners of dogs that attack and cause serious injury or death can now face jail terms.

The changes come after a review of the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 and recommendations of a taskforce including the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, participating local governments, the Local Government Association of Queensland and RSPCA Queensland.

The changes will be supported with a $7.57 million funding package, which will provide more coordinated, consistent and effective government action in response to dog attacks, and support dog management initiatives in First Nations communities.

The funding will also include a community education and awareness campaign rolled out over three years to build responsible dog ownership, prevent dog attacks, and reduce the risk of harm from dog attacks.

The laws include;

• Maximum fines for failure to take reasonable steps to ensure a dog does not attack to double to more than $92,000;

• Maximum fines up to $108,000 and up to three years jail for the owner of a dog that kills or seriously injures a person; and

• Bans on five dog breeds, namely Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa, American pit bull terrier or pit bull terrier, and the Perro de Presa Canario or Presa Canario.

• Victim numbers were up 17.7% last year alone.

Our best stories come from you! If you have a story to share, get in touch! Email admin@echo-news.com.au

Despite a slightly rainy start to the morning, on Sunday 24th March we had a fabulous turn out of families and community members all set to join in the fun of this great event once again.
