An Army of Angels

There wasn't a dry eye in the house on the 24th May at the Schmidt family home in Arana Hills family thanks to a home transformation thanks to Triple M Brisbane, TAFE Queensland, Paynters and over 60 small businesses, individual tradies and people who simply wanted – and needed - to help.

At just seven years old, Brisbane’s Ollie (Olive) Schmidt has been through more than most people do in a lifetime. She has up to 250 seizures a day, due to a severe condition. The seizures are so intense that they cause her to stop breathing several times a day. She is now developmentally delayed and intellectually impaired, and as a result, can’t do everyday activities like dress, feed or toilet herself. Ollie also has a compromised immune system meaning she is a frequent flyer in hospital.

Over the years the family have often had to isolate, including home schooling Ollie and her two brothers. To keep Ollie as healthy as possible, parents Mandy and Cory avoid indoor play areas and outdoor play areas are becoming increasingly dangerous due to the number of seizures she is having. This limits the places Ollie can go to be a child and to develop everyday skills.

Needless to say, the family desperately needed a area in their home where little Ollie could practice her walking, play and Ollie with father Cory be safe. Something her parents

approached NDIS for but were unfortunately turned away.

‘After being knocked back twice by NDIS for an area that we know would give our beautiful, cheeky little girl the chance to thrive and live her best life we were shattered,’ said Ollie’s mum Mandy.

Triple M heard their story, and rallied around to help the family.

Greg ‘Marto’ Martin put a call out in April for help to plan and build a padded deck and safe area at Ollie’s home so she, and her family, can live their lives together, in safety.

‘TAFE Queensland and Paynters Construction company immediately answered our call. They were joined by over 60 other businesses and individuals. The inspiring part? More than 150 businesses wanted to help, proving this city has a huge heart,’ said Triple M Breakfast’s Greg ‘Marto’ Martin.

Now after months of planning and four intense weeks of building, Ollie’s home is complete with a new padded deck and safe area.

Needless to say there wasn't a dry eye in the house on the day the deck was presented to the family with hardened tradies showing their huge hearts by forming a guard of honour for Ollie, her parents and two brothers as they returned to the family home – a home transformed by the love of a city.

Dear Editor, In coming months, our 93 state MPs will vote on a proposed law to introduce voluntary assisted dying (VAD).

The state government asked the independent and expert Queensland Law Reform Commission to draft a VAD Bill which has now been released and will soon be the subject of scrutiny and feedback by the parliamentary Health Committee before being debated by MPs in September.

The QLRC’s report and draft Bill mark a milestone in the long and hard battle to secure VAD laws for Queenslanders.

Many people involved with Dying With Dignity Queensland have waged this fight for more than 30 years.

Many of them could have benefited from a VAD law but have died long before seeing the latest positive developments in the law reform process. As we continue to push for VAD laws we should remember them.

VAD laws have been passed in Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania, and already operate in many places overseas.

But there is no guarantee the Queensland Bill will succeed.

So all Queenslanders wanting a better choice at the end of life must let their local MP know that they are expecting them to vote for VAD. While MPs will have a conscience vote on the VAD Bill, they should remember that the Bill is not about them.

It is about giving terminally ill people or those dying from a neurological condition a voluntary choice to end their intolerable suffering.

Voluntary assisted dying will not result in a single extra death but it will mean a lot less suffering.

What’s Developmenti got to do with it ?

An update from Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association (FGUK RA)

Previously known as ‘PD Online’, Developmenti is a website that keeps you informed about development going on in the Brisbane City Council’s local government area.

It’s also the place to make a submission or comment on a development application (DA). Moreton Bay Regional Council have a similar platform called DA Tracker.

Regularly checking Developmenti or DA Tracker is a valuable way for you to keep up-to-date and actively contribute to the way in which our community evolves. And while Facebook is a great resource for learning what’s going on around us, Council doesn’t use Facebook comments to make decisions about developments – they refer to properly made submissions on official platforms like Developmenti.

Making a submission isn’t complex. Simply login at https://developmenti.brisbane.qld.gov.au/, search for the development, review the application documents and then select ‘make a submission’ to put forward your views. If you have the

technical skills to challenge, say, problems with drainage runoff or road access points, even better – but for most of us, just a clear and respectful opinion on the DA is a great step toward you being a more active participant in building and improving the liveability of your community.

General Meeting Our recent general meeting generated discussion on the DA’s for 173 Upper Kedron Road and Ellendale Stage 5 and the plans to build a bridge from Ellendale across to Rosella Street Upper Kedron. We also expressed concerns about traffic pressures on Upper Kedron Road and the general need for better public transport and infrastructure planning in response to growth. We followed up the meeting with an email to attendees outlining how they could have input to State and Local government on the various discussion topics – including how to make a submission on Developmenti.

Community-Led Vision Later this year, our Association aims to hold a community planning session where we’ll invite residents to share ideas on how to make our suburbs the best they can be. The feedback will be collated by the RA Committee into a ‘community-led vision’ that can be used to inform Developers, Council and State Government on the decisions they make about our suburbs.

Wildlife Pocket Now Protected from Development

A small but vital piece of Moreton Bay Region will be protected as wildlife habitat forever, thanks to the incredible generosity of a Clear Mountain couple.

Jan and Dennis have donated six hectares of bushland on their private property to be managed in perpetuity under a Voluntary Conservation Agreement (VCA). The VCA will protect this land from future development and safeguard the wildlife in the area.

The bush-loving couple have always admired this piece of land for the spectacular array of flora and fauna, which makes it an ideal habitat for native wildlife like koalas, possums, many bird species and more. Jan, a Virologist, has always been interested in nature and seeks the importance to record what’s here – just this year she has found new plant species that she had never seen before on the property.

Her husband Dennis said he’d like to thank Council for getting the ball rolling on this project for the sake of the local wildlife.

‘There are definitely koalas, and we’ve had echidnas walk past our back door,’ Dennis revealed.

‘We find it distressing when things are cleared and there’s no thought given to native species and what’s actually on the land, so we thought this would be our own little bit to help that.

‘Because of the pressure for population in this part of the world it means there’s a lot of development going on, and we’re just trying to form some kind of buffer between that and the wildlife and trees.’

The Year That Was at GVK

An update from the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club: By Club President Paul Ryan Lions Clubs follow a financial year program so my year as President of this great club is drawing to a close. It’s at times like this that you reflect on the past year and revisit what the Club did well and what the Club could have done better.

It still amazes me that our Lions Club is relatively unknown in our community with our 50th Year in the Hills District arriving next year. Our new President Lion Debbie Payne and her Board of Directors will continue our work to provide assistance where needed – ‘We serve’.

We have provided $44,226.28 to support children and families through School Chaplaincies this year. The local schools include; Ferny Grove State School, Mitchelton State School, Ferny Hills State School, St Williams Catholic School, Patricks Rd State School, St Andrews Ferny Grove and Mitchelton Special School.

Two major retailers have been secured as long-term anchor tenants by the Queensland developer for the transit-oriented development’s 12,000sq m of retail space.

In cornerstone leasing deals for the project, supermarket giant Woolworths and liquor chain Dan Murphy’s have signed up for a total of 7000sq m.

Woolworths has taken a 15-year lease over 3200sq m — the biggest tenancy in the retail centre — for a full-line supermarket fronting Samford Road with a grocery pick-up service in the basement. Dan Murphy’s will occupy 1700sq m, also fronting Samford Rd, on a 10year lease.

Peter Honeycombe, Managing Director of Honeycombes Property Group, said the mix and calibre of the duo of anchor tenants reflected both a pent-up demand for quality retail space in the area and the community focus of the Ferny Grove Central project.

‘The huge level of interest from retailers, big and small, in what we are creating at Ferny Grove Central has been unprecedented and just goes to show the heightened demand for quality retail opportunities in the area,’ said Mr Honeycombe.

The multi-use development will adjoin the Ferny Grove train station, which caters for more than 5000 passengers per day.

Along with the 12,000sq m retail component and car parking, it also will comprise a residential enclave, The Fernery, featuring 82 luxury boutique apartments complete with a recreational deck, as well as improved pedestrian and cyclist connections through the site.

Facilities for train passengers will also be enhanced with the introduction of a multi-deck commuter car park providing the convenience of undercover parking bays.

Weekly Activities at Picabeen!

Picabeen is a Community Centre in Mitchelton that runs activities and provides services to people in the North West corridor. Picabeen also has an Op Shop, The Change Room which is located at 65 Gilston Street, Keperra. We rely on Volunteers to help run our community programs. Currently we are looking for new volunteers to fill specific roles. If any of the below opportunities interest you please get in touch!

• Art & Craft Facilitator: Thursday 10am - noon We are seeking someone who would like to help facilitate our Thursday Art/Craft class. This is a class for beginners and a small project is completed each week.

• No Interest Loans (NILS) application volunteer: 1 day per week. For this role, all training will be provided.

The role needs to be available to complete NILS application out of the Picabeen centre one day a week.

• Change Room volunteers. Training will be provided for people volunteering at the Op Shop. We welcome people who are available for a weekly shift, half day, or people who have a seasonal availability.

• BBQ lunch volunteers, Tuesday 11am-1pm. We are seeking people to add to our monthly BBQ roster. There are various roles such as cooking the BBQ, food prep, greeters, and general help setting up/packing away.

• Marketing/ IT volunteer. We are seeking a volunteer to help with some marketing for our groups and IT updates.

The Samford Show Entertainment Committee has a huge lineup of award winning entertainers, including Street Science stage show and workshops, Aussie FMX, Ashton’s Globe of Death and the Ashton’s Circus, and Dreamtime Reptiles to name a few.

Samford mother of three, Stacey Bathe says, ‘We love the Samford Show. We have three kids under the age of seven and it is a great way for us to spend time as a family creating some great childhood memories – and who doesn’t like the Aussie FMX team performers?’

The increasingly popular Samford Dog Jump and now Miniature Dog Jump will be held around lunchtime Saturday.

Champion woodchoppers will be competing throughout the weekend culminating in a huge showdown of raw strength.

For a little bit extra, showbags will be on offer and of course the many rides that sideshow alley has to offer. A food festival full of our favourite food vans will also be on offer throughout the weekend.

Dawson Parade: The way it was

An update from the Samford Museum The Hills District and surrounds is steeped in a rich history. In fact, most of the area was once made up by a number of farms.

Thanks to the Samford Museum, we are pleased to publish an extract from local lady, Gwen Finney’s story that was sourced from the Samford Reminiscences Vol 5.

‘My parents Peter and Jessie Barker’s farm was in Dawson Parade, Grovely where Leslie Patrick Park, Arana Hills is today.

Their family of three boys and two girls.

The eldest son Hector died aged 5 years from diphtheria.

I, Gwen, was a horse lover. I used to ride my horse Flora to Groveley School on Samford Road. This school later became Mitchelton Infants School. During the school day, I would unsaddle and unbridle Flora and let her go Photo from the 1932 Telegraph on Mitchelton flats featuring Gwen Barker (later which was an area Mrs Finney) between the school and Blackwood Road. The grass was always green there but often she would go home without me and I’d have to walk.

When I was twelve, I took the cream can in the sulky to Mitchelton Railway Station for my father. The Station Master lifted the can out for me as I was too small to handle it. He would say “Hurry along Miss Barker” as I was always running late and had to go home and get ready for school. Sometimes I walked through the bush.to school.

On the southern side of Kedron Brook where Wests Arana Rugby Leagues Club now stands, there were market gardens One of these gardeners was named Mon-hop.”

In 1932, Gwen was a passenger on a special rail trip to a mystery hike destination at Closeburn. The hike was to Upper Cedar Creek. An article appeared in The Saturday Night Telegraph which included a photo of Gwen in breeches and riding boots (see above).

This was long before another picnic train destined for Closeburn crashed at Camp Mountain. A new book by Peter Burden and Graham Bailey titled The Camp Mountain Railway Disaster 5th May 1947 is available from the Samford Museum.

Cost is $15 per copy and the book tells the story of the special trains that ran on the Dayboro line to accommodate Picnic and Labour Day holiday traffic, the accident and the inquiry which followed.

Arana Netball Club would like to put a BIG shout out to all of the families who give so much to their club.

Arana Netball is a local Netball club supported by volunteers who are the heart and soul of their organisation. They have a tribe of managers who help keep their daughters' teams organised each Bri, Kym & Gem Streeter week, coaches who develop players, committee members who give up time to raise funds for the club, keep our socials alive and manage the money and memberships.

On Mothers Day, the club paid tribute to the many mothers who contribute so much. One of these mums is Kym Streeter.

Kym has been involved with Arana Netball Club for 18 years and has worn many hats! As a mum, manager, umpire, coach and executive committee member, Kym has made a significant contribution to the organisation, something of which the club is very thankful for. A passion for netball must run through the Streeter blood, with two of Kym's daughters having followed in their mothers footsteps. Once old enough, daughters Bri and Gem joined the coaching and umpire ranks as well as volunteering on the committee!

Prime Time for Travel to the Gemfields News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

As winter time approaches many members feel it is the time to have a winter break and travel to distant Gemfields.

The Queensland State Government has set aside areas that fossickers can fossick for gemstones. Some of the fields are quite a long way from Brisbane but that is the position we are now in, whereas most local deposits have now been dug out or have been developed. Nearby places include the Warwick and Gympie area for Gold, Yowah, Toompine and Opalton for Opal and the Chinchilla area for petrified wood. We have many members who travel to these distant fields in Winter time as the digging and sieving is less arduous than in the hotter months.

Quite a few of our members also head to the Gemfields such as Anakie, Rubyvale, Sapphire and The Willows in search of sapphires and zircons, etc.

In the cooler months, we try to plan field trips to different locations on a monthly basis for those members who have remained at home.

Many of our members travelled to the Lismore Gem Show in May and while in that area searched for Labradorite near Casino. Labradorite is a faceting material and is relatively easy to find in the area our Club goes to. The Labradorite found is of the Golden variety and is not as hard as Topaz and Sapphire, so is not generally cut to set in rings (because of softness), but more often are set in brooches and pendants.

The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its clubrooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove, and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm.

The Club caters for Gemstone enthusiasts in the North West area of Brisbane.

Emily was born and bred on Brisbane's Northside and called Samford home before moving over to the U.S. after scoring a golf and academic scholarship to Virginia Tech University. Here, she now majors in Human Development.

Emily attended Ferny Grove High School and joined Keperra Golf Club back in 2009 as one of their Junior girls. From the outset, she has Keperra Golf Clubs Emily Maher always demonstrated immense talent. It comes as no surprise to her golfing buddies that she has qualified for this prestigious competition.

Although she is overseas for the majority of the year, Emily is still affiliated with the club and pops down to practice whenever in town.

The U.S. Womens Open will be played from the 3rd to 6th June The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California.

‘Always A Bridesmaid’ almost seemed like it was never going to happen, but the Players were so glad it did! Their southern belles (Kari, LibbyRuth, Sedalia, Monette, Charlie and Deedra) kept everyone entertained with their antics. The script

by Jesse Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten was super witty and an absolute joy for the group to perform, the audience’s One of the hilarious scenes from laughter over the four ‘Always a Bridemaid’ nights was testament to that.

The Hills Players would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all their performers and backstage crew for their commitment and passion. However, their biggest thanks goes to the audience, for their support and appreciation for what they do, it makes it all worthwhile and so much more fun. So what’s next in 2021? Watch this space.

Activities for grandparents and grandchildren to do together

Spending time with grandchildren is a special opportunity to deepen bonds, share stories, teach them a skill and even impart grand old wisdom.

Grandchildren may have dozens of toys or technology devices but always prefer precious time with doting grandparents.

Choosing activities everyone will enjoy safely means considering both the child’s interest level as well as a grandparent’s energy and mobility levels.

Here are some fun ideas grandparents and grandchildren can enjoy at different ages and life stages: For Babies And Pre-School Aged Children Storytime at the local library Most local libraries offer a weekly story time for babies and pre-schoolers, aimed at introducing little ones to the joys of language through rhyme, music, story and craft. Check out Brisbane City Libraries and Moreton Bay Libraries for their session times for children of different ages.

The short engaging children’s programs that most libraries offer are the perfect free weekly outing that fits in well with nap and mealtimes. The books, songs and craft activities offer ample inspirational and great tips to encourage continued reading and music at home.

Animal encounters Animals of all shapes and sizes are always interesting to small children and can hold their attention for a long time.

Feeding ducks or bird watching in the local park makes a fun, educational activity where a child can learn about creatures and

their habitats. Playing with domestic pets, such as a dog, bird or goldfish, is another great daily activity that brings pleasure to young and old. A trip to the zoo or wildlife park has plenty to amaze and entertain young children but is more manageable when they are older and can walk (without a stroller) and don’t need a long daily nap.

Primary School-Aged Children Fishing and other hobbies When children are aged 6 to 12 years old, they are eager to learn skills from a patient and caring teacher. If a grandparent has knowledge of how to fish, this is an activity every child loves to learn. Fishing with a child means endless hours of de-tanging lines, baiting hooks and dealing with snares, but the joy of catching the first fish is well-worth the forbearance.

If fishing is not a family passion, another hobby may be equally as absorbing. Making model trains or flying kites are timeless hobbies, often most loved by children and patient grandparents.

Grandparents who are handy with woodworking tools can also share this craft with a child and make a wooden toy together.

Teaching a child a life skill such as this takes time and gentle encouragement, so it’s best to set aside a whole afternoon or even a full weekend.

Knitting Knitting is a timeless craft that children often find soothing and enjoyable. It is a great activity for a cold, wet winter’s day too. Boys and girls alike enjoy knitting and creating something they can be proud of. When teaching a child to knit, keep it very simple. Use large needles (size 12 or bigger) and chunky yarn which they can handle. The added advantage is chunky wool comes together quickly to make a simple scarf, so a grandchild can see their progress quickly.

Baking simple recipes together Everyone loves eating delicious food. Most children jump at the chance to help in the kitchen and be part of the action. If a grandparent has a special signature recipe, children are always eager to learn, to keep the traditional recipe in the family.

Start with simple dishes or involve the child in simple, but memorable steps in the process – like cracking eggs, stirring or adding the finishing touches.

Picking veggies or flowers Children can be encouraged to help in the garden, picking flowers for a vase or harvesting any vegetables or herbs. This is a rewarding experience for everyone, especially children who learn where food comes from, how it grows and why they should eat their veggies!

A beautiful bunch of flowers picked from a grandparent’s garden makes a beautiful memento of a lovely day together too.

Beddown Finds Kindness in Cushlets

In 2019, Norm McGillivray, Beddown CEO had a vision, he wanted to provide a safe, secure, and comfortable place for vulnerable people to get a good night’s rest and help restore health, dignity and respect.

Norm had been personally impacted by homelessness and he wanted to target those who sleep rough around Australia. The lightbulb moment came when Norm went to a local shopping centre and noticed that the car park was nearly empty. He The shopping centre car park that has been Year 10 students hard at work instantly saw the potential in utilising transformed by Beddown into a safe, secure preparing the Cushlets in their Food the space at night when car parks are place for guests to sleep and Fibre class vacant. After some research, Norm connected with Secure Parking as a National Partner and Beddown was born. The world first two-week trial was successfully held in late 2019.

Last month, Beddown commenced a second trial for eight weeks in a car park in Brisbane CBD. The vast generous army of volunteers has made this possible each night. However, as this trial nears to an end and Norm works to secure long term sponsors and partners to make this a permanent program, he is concerned about what happens next to the vulnerable guests Beddown has watched over, especially as the colder nights draw in.

A wonderful act of kindness from Carolyn Cox and the Year 10 Food and Fibre students at Everton Park State High School has helped with this challenge. Recently, the students presented 50 ‘cushlets’ (fleecy blanket cushions) to Beddown for their homeless guests to help them keep warm over winter. The students have been learning about homelessness while also learning to sew and make the ‘cushlets.’ This generous donation will help the Beddown guests while Norm and his team pursue a permanent program….because everyone deserves a bed to sleep in.

Gardening

HOG is a Hive of Activity this month From The Hills Organic Garden Community

Over the last month we have been busily preparing our garden beds for planting by adding extra soil, compost, fertiliser and dolomite. We have also been very lucky to have received some very nice rain which has really watered the fertiliser into the soil.

A wonderful crop of beans has just been harvested and shared with our members. The beans are now finished and ready to be mulched back into the garden. The pumpkin crop has also been plentiful and also great to share amongst the members.

Planting has begun in earnest with Beetroot, Snow Peas, Pak Choy, Spinach, Lettuce, Potatoes, Kale, Egg Plant, Climbing Beans, Broccolini, Cauliflower, Cabbage, and Brussel Sprouts being planted. The soil is still warm, so the plants should be able to establish a good root system before the colder weather arrives.

At the moment, the herb garden has flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), thyme, tarragon, mother of herbs and garlic chives.

The Federal Budget was handed down last week, with one of the big ticket items being that single parents will be backed to buy their own home with just a 2% deposit.

Dubbed the ‘Family Home Guarantee’, the new scheme aims to help single parents enter the housing market. From July, single parents with dependent children will be able to buy a home with a deposit of just 2 per cent with the Government guaranteeing the remaining 18%.

Also,the low and middle income tax offset (LMITO) has been extended for another year, meaning Australians will be $1,080 better off at tax time.

A number of tax incentives have been included in this year’s budget for small and medium (SME) businesses. The corporate tax rate for SME’s will drop from 27.5% to 25% come July 1.

Retirees will be given more flexibility when it comes to their superannuation. Those over the age of 60 will now be allowed to contribute up to $300,000 into superannuation if they downsize their home. Previously retirees needed to be 65 or older to make this contribution.

Note also the $450 per month minimum income threshold for the superannuation guarantee. This means those who earn under that amount will now receive superannuation contributions, whereas previously they did not.

June 30th is fast approaching, so if you haven’t yet lodged last years tax return or previous years for that matter then you need to get your returns lodged.

Whipping up a wonderful workshop

Members of The Brisbane North Cake Decorators were recently treated to a fabulous workshop.

The guest demonstrator, Sue, was from another branch of the Qld Cake Decorators Association and showed the ladies how to make flowers, leaves and scenery on cakes using a palette knife and a soft medium like buttercream to sculpt the shapes.

They then all had a go themselves, some with more success than others!

The Brisbane North Cake Decorators are a branch of the Qld Cake Decorators Association and are a not-for-profit organisation. They foster the art of cake decorating and love sharing their Members watching Sue doing knowledge with palette knife sculpting each other.

Members meet at the Arana Hills Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade Arana Hills on the third Saturday of each month, commencing at 1pm. Afternoons are busy usually with a workshop or demonstration of some particular technique, afternoon tea, a very short business meeting and usually lots of laughter! New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show 12.1 per cent of the nation’s 5.9 million employed woman are now their own boss.

More than a third of all small businesses are run by women, and there’s a blooming world of networking, blogs and entrepreneurial women taking ­advantage of the trend.

‘If you look at women in particular, they are more formally educated and moving into their family forming years in their 30s, and they have invested more to prepare themselves, with more education, so they want to make sure they can continue a burgeoning career,’ social demographer Mark McCrindle explained.

Jaimi Wilson Hayley Crisafio and Jaimi Wilson—a two-woman team that have taken Brisbane’s café industry by storm.

As dreamers turned doers, this local power-duo are certainly a force to be reckoned with. Here’s their inspiring timeline: 2015 After visiting the Gold Coast and falling head over heels in love with their dream of owning a café on the strip, Hayley and Jaimi packed their bags and relocated from Perth to Brisbane in a heartbeat.

traction on social media was phenomenal, with the café earning almost 2000 likes pre-launch. However, there were many sceptical folks in the community, after seeing a handful of owners come through over the years who couldn’t quite hit the mark. But not to fear—after being open for only 18 months, it was already crystal clear that Ferny’s, like Blackwood, was on track to smashing Hayley and Jaimis’ 5-year goals out of the ballpark, too.

2016 Fast forward a year later, and they had seized the opportunity of purchasing an old store in Mitchelton, then transformed it into what is now known as Blackwood Café & Espresso Bar. Nestled amongst the tree-lined streets of North West Brisbane, this café quickly became a booming, suburban hotspot for neighbourhood residents to enjoy.

Well, according to two little birdies, this year there are two new stores in the business’ pipeline. Scheduled to open September 2021 is store number 3, Moggill Café & Espresso Bar. Moggill is a suburb west of Brisbane (19 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD) that is home to 12 000 people, with lots of newly built-up homes in newly established estates. It has a very limited selection of coffee and breakfast places around them, so the girls’ café is sure to be a massive triumph with the locals, or with anyone planning a day trip down west!

2019 Three years have passed, each a step-up from the last.

By now, Blackwood Café & Espresso Bar have hit all of its 5-year goals from the girls’ business plan, including sales targets, employee structures and succession plans, and having a majority of the café’s policies and procedures automated.

It was from these successes that Hayley and Jaimi were able to step out, duplicate, and open another store. December 2019, the duo launched Ferny‘s Cafe & Espresso Bar—only 4 months before COVID-19 hit.

2020 With the shadow of the pandemic looming over us all, Ferny’s became a shining beacon in our community’s long journey to recovery. We fell in love with Ferny’s before the store’s doors were even open; a well-oiled café was on everyone’s wish list, it seemed. The

Store number 4—yet to be named—will definitely hit closer to home for Hills and Everton residents. Word has it that this store will rep a completely new venue and brand. While the first 3 cafés share the same brand, similar logos, and identical menus, store number 4 will have exciting, fresh twists to keep things interesting.

Located in Ferny Grove in a new development scheduled for 2023, planning has already commenced for this exciting new secret in the Hills.

Susanne Jones Managing Director Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD A lot has changed since the last ‘Women in Business’’ feature. As I am preparing my contribution for this year’s edition, I am asking myself whether a similar rendition of last year’s content is going to meet people’s expectations in this new world.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed our lives. It has changed the way we think, feel and go about our day-to-day. We had to re-learn to wash our hands properly, keep our distance from others, tap elbows instead of shake hands and queue in orderly fashion at the coffee shop while standing on taped crosses. A small compromise one would think in order to prevent the spread of a disease that has claimed the lives of so many across the globe. However, we must not underestimate the impacts Covid-19 had on people’s mental health.

A select few people thrive with very little human contact, but most of us need to spend time with others to remain emotionally healthy and happy. Soon after Covid-19 had reached the community my business serves, the team and I experienced a noticeable change in the behaviours in our customers while dealing with increased loneliness and social isolation.

Our Community Support Professionals were tasked to share strategies with those customers who do not have loved ones around them in support during a time that brought unprecedented (term of the decade?) challenges to us all.

There is a lot we can do to ease the discomfort of loneliness and social isolation and having time alone doesn’t have to be a bad thing: 1. Be productive. Just because you might be spending extra time alone doesn’t mean you just have to be miserable. Everyone feels better when they are being productive.

2. Get a pet. If you don’t already have a pet, consider adopting one. What type of animal interests you and will suit your lifestyle.?

3. Connect with others in a safe manner. Use your imagination and find a way to connect with people while making your health a priority.

4. Take up a solo hobby. There are plenty of hobbies you can do by yourself. Yoga, online chess, knitting, writing and painting are just a few.

5. View beautiful things. You can view just about anything in the world with your smartphone or computer. Spend a little time looking at beautiful things each day and you’ll feel great.

6. Maintain a high level of self-care. It’s important to continue taking good care of yourself even if you’re spending a lot of time alone. For example, a long hot bath is something that you do for yourself, not for others.

7. Be creative. Many people find extra creativity when they have some time to themselves. Why not take advantage of your solitude and let the creative juices flow!

Dr Ema Bowman BVSc (dist), MANZCVS (SAIM) Experienced New Zealand and USA trained veterinarian, Ema Bowman has been smashing the glass ceiling of the veterinary profession since she graduated from Massey University in 2008.

With a broad knowledge base that has been cultivated over 13 years,this experienced young lady is not only a talented Small Animal General Practitioner, but possesses a broad range of additional skills including; Internal Medicine, Feline Medicine and Breed specific considerations (especially BOAS).

Ema is extremely focused on wellness and preventative care in order to foster long, happy, healthy relationships between pets and their owners. “Essentially I want to prevent problems, not wait until they turn up!‘’ explained Ema. It is therefore of no surprise to learn that she is one of the very few surgeons proficient in Bracycephalic Airway Improvement Surgery (BOAS) that essentially enables brachycephalic dogs eg. pugs, french bulldogs, boston terriers and bulldogs to breathe! This special surgery is recommended for every flat faced dog if they are to have the best chance at a long and happy life. Airway improvement surgery widens the nostrils, shortens AND thins the soft palate, removes everted laryngeal saccules (grade 1 laryngeal collapse) as well as removing abnormally enlarged tonsils. This all adds up to providing more oxygen to the heart and lungs. Ema encourages any owner of a brachycephalic dog to look in to this procedure.

‘I continue to be heartbroken by the lack of awareness and education among vets, breeders and owners of the unnecessary hardship these dogs experience - and worse in the Qld heat!’ said Ema. Not one to sit on her laurels, this skilled vet is constantly learning, upskilling and devouring all new literature to keep up to date with developments within her profession.

Dr Judy Quinn BVSc (Hons) With over 30 years experience in veterinary practices, you can be sure your pet is in safe hands with local vet Judy Quinn.

Growing up in Brisbane, Judy always had an affinity for animals, and was particularly drawn to horses. At a young age, she recalls a story that sticks in her memory about the treatment of injuries sustained by a foal belonging to her Grandfather. It was this story that set her on the path to studying veterinary science.

After graduating from the University of Queensland in 1987, she started her career working in mixed animal practice. During this time she found her interests were more for companion animals which led her to spend a few years in the UK working in a small animal practice, giving her invaluable experience.

Judy has a particular interest in preventative medicine and keeping our pets healthy. She says this month can be a challenging time for our older-aged pets and encourages the community to keep a good eye on them.

‘In June, I am starting to focus on our senior pets. Often more problems become apparent in our older-aged pets during the colder winter months,’ explains Judy.

‘We can really help animals to enjoy a happier, healthier life by seeing them regularly and identifying and treating problems/issues early.’

As a nature-lover, Judy is passionate about the conservation of our natural environment and preserving it for years to come. With this comes a strong interest in protecting and treating wildlife.

Judy’s interests away from work include; horseriding, gardening, playing the piano, cooking and reading. She also loves to travel, particularly to Africa. Judy is also kept busy after work, with her small farm where she lives with my her family, two dogs, three horses and a small herd of cattle!

Welcome to ‘Grab that Grant’, a monthly column brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall. Carolyn is the founder of the Little Project Management Company, and has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry. This month, Carolyn chats about how the future of funding is changing.

Do grants support charities to thrive?

According to Social Ventures Australia’s May 2021 report, grant funding can create ‘unique vulnerabilities for charities’.

Yes, you read that right.

Grant funding can sometimes be a bad thing for charities.

There are differences in the way we invest in an organisation depending on whether they are for-profit or non-profit. Let’s take a closer look at some of these.

Before an investment is made to a for-profit organisation, investors look at the way the whole organisation runs. If they decide to invest, they trust the organisation to make good long-term decisions.

However, before funding is given to a non-profit organisation, funders look at what programs the nonprofit runs rather than the whole organisation. Non-profits are usually asked questions about their operational or running costs like how much they spend on essential staff or the infrastructure they have in place. If grant funding is successful, they must report back regularly when and how it suits the funder.

When funding is restricted to individual programs, it limits an organisation’s opportunity to focus on strengthening core foundations, investing in staff and innovating to come up with better solutions for our community. When we don’t trust non-profits as the experts in their field, this comes as a huge cost not just to non-profits but to all of us.

The future of grant funding is changing.

I remember a time that I was shocked if I found out that some of my donations went to core operations of a charity versus the ‘cause’ I was supporting. Now though, I am grateful if my donation goes towards marketing, to bring on board more donors like me, or towards amazing staff, who will create more impact with my donor dollars. This type of unrestricted funding is the type of funding that creates change.

In 2020, the Ford Foundation along with over 800 US-based and international foundations pledged their commitment to providing more flexible funding during the COVID-19 crisis to make it as unrestricted as possible. Funders can continue to make this pledge.

Non-profits can also be part of this change, by developing relationships with funders that have an aligned mission, by being purposeful in funding applications, and by being vocal about what your organisation needs to thrive including the funding of your core operations.

The Society would like to send a special‚ ‘shout out‘ this month to the Enoggera State School, who turns 150 years young in 2021!

With European settlement occurring in the Enoggera district from 1845, the school opened its doors way back in 1871 at a location that was then Great Northern Road (now part of South Pine Road). 26 students were on the initial enrolment and the teacher was Mr John Chasely Towell.

In the ensuing decades, the school and its grounds became a focal point for local concerts, dances, meetings and Sunday School picnics.

With the local area population rapidly increasing, and school enrolments rising, a new school building was built. On 2nd September 1916, the new Enoggera State School opened at its current site at 235 South Pine Road.

The original school building is now located at the back of the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Wardell Street and houses the collection of the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society.

Enoggera State School has become a much-loved and notable feature of the local community. It is still going strong with a recently completed Performing Arts Centre and enrolment currently standing at approximately 300 students.

Building Positive Support Around Those Affected By Addiction

Drug and alcohol addiction are challenges families and the wider community have difficulty understanding.

People subsumed by these dependencies face negative social judgement. Shame, humiliation and isolation haunt, not only the addicted, but also their families and friends. Blame is sometimes heaped on parents when what they need is help and support for their family and the family member who is addicted. Faced with the perceived stigma and the lack of community conversation around addiction, many families feel reluctant to reach out or are at a loss as to who to turn to for help and support. To try to make our community aware of the truths behind addiction, and the support services available for the addicted and their families, Samford Health And Wellbeing Support (an initiative of Samford Lions) is holding a free information evening on 15th June at the CWA Hall Samford.

There will be a wide range of speakers at this event who include: Gai Lemon from Primary Health Network (PHN) North Brisbane. PHN runs programs and has networks dealing with alcohol and drug support, mental health and suicide prevention.

Chrissie Kelly of Family Drug Support who runs programs to help families and friends of the addicted.

North Brisbane District Vulnerable Persons And Domestic Violence Unit of Queensland Police, which gives domestic, family violence and vulnerable persons support as well as educating fellow police officers,.

Chemmart Samford which gives information on prescribed drugs and help to those who need it.

Beyond Blue which provides Mental Health support and information.

Margie Riley and Kevin Doyle who will share their lived experience as parents trying to help their addicted children.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, It feels like I have to deal with and look after our three girls all on my own. To get my husband to really pay attention to them requires a gargantuan effort. And whenever I mention it to him, he becomes extremely defensive. The girls crave his attention, but he just does not see this. Their ages range from seven to three. I need his support at night and on the weekends to look after them. He leaves very early for work in the morning, so I deal with the morning rush-hour. But that time from 6.30 to 8 at night when we all need him, he makes himself very unavailable by going on a compulsive cleaning frenzy of the kitchen, kids' toys, and general mess. He's a very tidy and organised person and it irritates the hell out of him if things aren't in their right place before we go to bed.

I used to feel like he was having a go at my house-keeping, and feeling like somehow I wasn't doing my job. But I realised sensibly enough that I could not do everything, so I no longer feel upset in myself or feel like I'm being criticised when he behaves like this. However, he gets upset when I ask for help with the girls because that's where I really need it. And he says he is being supportive because he's doing all this tidying up for me. My reply is that what we, and particularly he, has, is limited time with the girls, and that they need his presence, not their toys put away.

I feel like I've done a lot of work on myself, but I don't seem to be able to get him to change. Any ideas? Sue.

Dear Sue, I have to agree with you on this one. It is terribly important that both parents spend quality time with their children. Fathers who work long hours are particularly prone to miss out, and when this happens, it sets up the behavioural expectation and pattern that men, as represented by the father ideal they see, are not emotionally available. While these fathers may provide lots of material comfort, the emotional component is distant or lacking. This is something that is often commented on by my adult clients. "My father was not there. He was too busy working or doing stuff." Without doubt, each person would have liked to have had more time and a deeper and more meaningful relationship with their father. Not only do we feel we are missing out as kids, but also it does not provide good modelling for out adult partner relationships. Distance and unavailability is not a good building-block for successful intimate relationships.

Of course, being a good provider is an important aspect of a male's positive sense of self, but there has to be a balance.

ROBIN BOTIC

There are many parental behaviours, but a very important one which is applicable in your case, and that provides quality quality time, is open-hearted listening. By this, I mean listening to understand what is really going on for your child.

What, if anything, is bothering them? Don't come in with a judgment or an immediate fix-it remedy so you feel you have done your duty and can move on to what you want to do. Give them the time and patience to let them explore their situation and come up with their own solution. With your support and guidance, this is a great way to build confidence and selfesteem. Children also learn to trust this space with you as a place they can come to when they need to. And by God, you might well need this when they reach their teen years. Bedtime, when the day's rush is over, is both a safe yet vulnerable time when they, if allowed the space, are more likely to open up. Reading stories, and chats about what's happened in each of our days, opens up the above possibilities.

It can and should be a really special time for fathers, not just for mothers. Encourage your husband with the above ideas in mind and with gentle suggestions that this would be more beneficial to the developmental growth of your children, than fulfilling the Mr Clean need, which is about his needs rather than his children's. (The probability is that his behaviour re cleanliness is something again modelled from his own family or origin.) The time you save in his sharing his time with your children is a time you could use to offer to help him tidy things up later. Then you can both relax together.

Another important aspect of parenting is being there for children, engaging and I really do mean engaging with themin their play. Showing enjoyment and pride and praise in any of their scholastic, sporting or extra-curricular activities, makes such a difference to how they feel about themselves, and how comfortable they feel with you. Praise with no conditions.

By that I mean no buts - ‘you could or should have’. That method of instruction - and you may think you're being helpful - is actually a great teacher of the debilitating belief that many people have, that ‘no matter what I do, it's never good enough’. Good coaching in any form does not dismiss prior effort. Emphasise that what you are asking is for the longterm benefit of the children. It's not about who's doing what most or best between you two. It's about working together without blame or judgment for what works best to support the family effort. Make sure that you too are also appreciative of his efforts re cleaning et cetera, so his contribution to date is not negated, or he is made to feel wrong. Needing to be right, and you perhaps making him feel wrong, could be part of his resistance to change. When he feels the emotional benefits in himself and in the response from your daughters, that in itself is the reward that keeps us doing more of the same. Subtle and supportive recognition from you of this is very important.

Social Activities Galore at Arana VIEW

Arana View Club members had a ball reminiscing about a different life from a bygone era at a recent trip to the Caboolture Historical Village.

The club have many social activities like these each month (in addition to their regular meeting) which the ladies always thoroughly enjoy.

The Club’s next meeting is on 7th July at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade Keperra at 10.30am for an 11am start. Cost for the two course meal and tea or coffee is $30. There will be the usual lucky door and raffle prizes, the proceeds of which go towards supporting their 14 Learning for Life students.

The guest speakers for July will be Glen Gillard and Amatus Akouboo Douw.

Both are from the Free Papua Movement so should provide some interesting and thought -provoking information.

EVERTON PARK LINK ROAD

Finally, after many years of applying pressure on the State Labor Government, the Everton Park Link Road (Stage 1) is open.

This new link road through Everton Park’s retail hub provides a direct route between Stafford Road and South Pine Road, which will improve congestion and redistribute traffic turning left into South Pine Road.

Motorists who are travelling northbound on South Pine Road will have more traffic light green time during peak periods.

Bike riders will also benefit from dedicated facilities including a direct link to the Kedron Brook Bikeway.

Whilst this is a positive development, more effective traffic relief will only come about if the State Government funds stage 2 which is the direct upgrade of the notorious Stafford and South Pine Roads. At the last election, I committed, under an LNP Government, $100m to this much needed project. I will continue to lobby the State Labor Government to match this so we can spend less time stuck in traffic!

FEDERAL BUDGET 2021 EDITION

Tax relief Around 67,400 taxpayers in Dickson will benefit from tax cuts of up to $2,745 this year. This is a result of the Morrison Government’s decision to extend the low- and middle-income tax offset to 2021-22 and the decision to bring forward Stage 2 of the Government’s tax relief plan.

75,300 people in Dickson have already benefited from the plan.

Childcare The Government has increased the Child Care subsidy for families, with more than one child under age five in childcare.

We have also removed the $10,560 cap on the Child Care Subsidy. This will benefit 1,710 families in Dickson.

Skills and Training A new 50% wage subsidy will help create 170,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships, building on the 1,785 apprenticeships we already have in Dickson. There is also an extended and expanded JobTrainer Fund, which will support more than 450,000 new places to up-skill job seekers and young people.

Seniors The Budget includes a $17.7 billion investment in aged care over the next five years. This additional funding will provide practical and targeted improvements including 80,000 new home care packages in the next two years and $10 extra per resident per day for those in residential aged care from 1 July.

For anyone in our community thinking of downsizing there is also good news.

From 1 July, Australians aged over 60 will be able to make a one-off, post-tax contribution of up to $300,000 per person (or $600,000 per couple) to their super when they sell their home.

For those not wishing to sell but still wanting to increase their cashflow, there is the Pension Loan Scheme, which allows eligible singles and couples to access up to almost $20,000 in a one-off non-taxable cash payment by borrowing against their home (if it is owned outright).

Building Better Roads The Budget invests an extra $2 billion in upgrades to the Bruce Highway helping to build better transport links right across Queensland. In our local community, there is an additional $25 million in funding to flood proof Youngs Crossing. The upgrade will see a new four lane bridge built using the existing alignment.

These are just some of the measures included in the Budget.

Ross Road Park - Nature Reserve Upper Kedron Previously to Council’s purchase of Ross Road Park in Upper Kedron, the property was owned by five generations of the Marshall family and operated as a dairy farm until 2004.

In 2010 the property was acquired through Brisbane City Council’s Bushland Acquisition Program because of the high level of biological diversity, ecological integrity and significant native corridor linkages including Cedar Creek, which runs along the edge of the Park.

The initial tree plantings are now over 10 years old and the site was selected to receive restoration through the environmental offset program in the 2019/20 financial year. This work has continued this year because of the interruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of the previous land use, exotic pasture grasses, weeds and vines can be found in the Park and weed management activities continue to control weed species and facilitate regeneration of native plant species. Council has undertaken the restoration of the Park by using a method called

mosaic, which is endorsed by Birds Queensland. The mosaic method entails clearing small sections of weeds and it enables the local fauna to remain in situ whilst the rehabilitation is undertaken. New native plants are planted and established before removing the weeds.

The total rehabilitation area of the park is 15.38 acres. To date, over 34,000 native plants have been established into the habitat. Recently Council partnered with Kawana/Bellbowie Rotary Club to plant another 2,000 plants and I would like to thank all the Rotarians from other clubs who joined us in this mass planting.

Ross Road Park adjoins Bellbird Grove Picnic Facility within D’Aguilar National Park. The Park is another great example of Council’s commitment to the environment,. Council has formed partnerships with bush care groups and residents who are passionate about rehabilitation and volunteer their time to improve our local environment and would like to acknowledge the commitment of these residents.

Transit Oriented Development construction to commence in July Last month I had the great pleasure of officially opening the shopfront for the Fernery – the apartment complex component of the Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development (TOD).

The apartments look fantastic and, I am told, selling fast. If you are keen to check out what the development will look like, or if you are thinking about getting an apartment at the TOD head on down to the Fernery office near Coffee-On-The-Way on Ferny Way in Ferny Hills.

In addition to the unit complex, the TOD will use the footprint of the existing Ferny Grove Railway Station carpark to construct the multi-level carpark as well as new retail, dining spaces cinemas, and even a new day-care centre.

Most significantly, the TOD will inject around $140 million into our local economy and will boost local employment by more than 1,400 full time jobs. Over 700 of those jobs will be during the build with over 700 extra ongoing jobs in the precinct once the build is complete.

The TOD is a unique investment in our local economy with private enterprise contributing $120 million and the Federal Government and the State Government working together to fund more than 400 extra car spaces for commuters. The site will be handed over to the builders in June and construction will commence in July 2021.

Mitchie High new facilities Mitchie State High School’s new coding lab and Resource Centre is now fully operational. This amazing new facility

The amazing new Resource Centre and Coding Lab at Mitchie High. was delivered as part of the $10 million I promised to deliver to the school in 2017. The new facilities were completed earlier this year.

The new labs are home to state-of-the-art computers and software, which will be used to train our kids for the next generation of high-tech jobs. The resource centre is an amazing mix of traditional library spaces and flexible learning options.

When I was a kid, schools did not have these sorts of facilities.

It is imperative that we give our students the best possible start in life. I can’t wait to see the sorts of things that graduates of Mitchie High will contribute to our society in the future.

Dolphins NRL Bid I am supporting the bid by the Redcliffe Dolphins to become the 17th National Rugby League Team. The Moreton Bay Regional Council, along with support from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, are also backing the bid. The Moreton Bay region is one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia and I believe it makes sense to plant the new team in what will become an economic powerhouse in the next few years.

The Nest Community Announces Their Flagship ‘Exchange Project’

One of our local not-for-profit organisations has shared with us details of their exciting community initiative, which will bring teenage girls into their women’s space to provide mentoring workshops.

The Nest Community is an organisation built on empowering and connecting women of all ages, and providing them a safe space to nurture and learn from one another.

In their upcoming Exchange Project, the organisation will welcome girls from surrounding schools into their community home, where they will be offered the opportunity to connect with and be mentored by the Nest’s dedicated volunteers.

This innovative initiative is a collaborative project focused on developing skills, fostering confidence and friendships in the local community.

Over the course of the program, the girls will be involved in a variety of handmade living workshop experiences, as they will learn and develop a host of skills including sewing, knitting and sustainable gardening.

The Nest Community’s co-founder and CEO, Roz Fenson, shared with us some of the goals behind the Exchange Project.

“Forming intergenerational connections, sharing the often forgotten art of handmade living skills and providing these young women with a safe and inclusive space to share and manage their issues are the key outcomes we hope to see from this program,” Roz stated.

“We understand the need for a place dedicated to women, their issues and their needs. Giving young girls a chance to become a part of our community has always been a key goal for our organisation, and the Exchange Project will play a huge part in allowing us to achieve that goal.” Roz continued.

The Exchange Project is the Nest’s response to the growing disconnect being found between women of all ages, more than ever many girls are suffering from a lack of interaction with supporting and nurturing female figures.

“Allowing these girls to work together with our volunteers as they guide them through the learning process creates an amazing, soft entry point to address and support them through the issues they may be facing in their school or home life.”

Roz explained.

Roy Atfield Arthy

Born 19th October 1919 | From Gympie, QLD

When the war broke out Roy was playing football (Rugby League) at Curran, and he signed up right away in 1939. After training in Darwin, Roy was sent to the Middle East, Benghazi in Lybia, Syria and eventually to New Guinea.

Roy offered some interesting insight into the Japanese tactics of fighting in the jungles and mountains of New Guinea.

A keen North Queensland Cowboys supporter, Roy celebrated his 100th Birthday at the Cooroy RSL Sub-Branch in 2019. Roy passed away in February of last year.

Bill Elliott

Born 19th August 1921 | From Ayr, QLD

Bill speaks of the “Yellow Peril” scare in 1939 and the push for men to join the militia.

Both Bill (17) and his brother (15) joined the Army in 1939 but were taken into the infantry (31st Battalion) full time when Japan entered the war in December of 1941.

Bill speaks of hearing Tokyo Rose on the radio threatening Australia, before he was deployed to New Guinea. Bill was discharged due to injury and he shares stories of Townsville, American troops and what life was like after the war.

Alan Brown Born 21st March 1922 | From Stanthorpe, QLD

Alan joined the Airforce in 1941 with a mission to become a Night Fighter.

He and his co-pilot Vic ‘Possum’ Whitfield, a master of astro navigation were the first Australians to land in Greece after the German occupation.

Alan received a special commendation from the President of Greece at Expo 88 here in Brisbane.

Alan continued his love of flying after the war, founding gliding clubs across the Sunshine Coast area of Queensland. Alan passed away in May of 2019.
