Local Legend Lorraine is Honoured

A lovely lady by the name of Lorraine Duckwitz chapped on the door of Echo News HQ a few months back with a Certificate of Appreciation for some advertising we had carried out for the annual Cent Auction to raise funds for the Queensland Medical Research Institute.

We were really humbled, but from this gesture we thought, this lady should be the one receiving an award for all the hard work in the community that she does. So, we were delighted to hear that this local legend was recently awarded the ‘Senior Volunteers Award’ by the Order of Australia Association, Queensland Branch in recognition to her community service. This presentation was one of three awarded to Senior Volunteers. This inspiring lady’s unstinting passion to raise funds for various community causes can be traced back to her support for her children attending Geebung State School. I am sure many readers can relate to the truly mammoth efforts required for building and manning of school tuck shops and annual school fetes in order to raise funds for swimming pools and classroom equipment, etc.

Lorraine tells us these were rewarding days of achievement but also very hard work! Lorraine, like you, followed her children as they moved onto high school and outside sporting activities. Her attention was then diverted to other causes as time passed and she became involved in supporting medical research in the field of asthma and eventually cancer

The Queensland Medical Research Institute has benefitted immensely from her efforts as she led regular Pop-up Stalls in shopping centres and Cent Auctions which she conducted several times a year. The support she has received from all levels of the community from centre and club management, businesses helping with the supply of excess goods and YOU, the elderly citizens who find they cannot actively participate, but lend support by donations of cherished craftwork, has been outstanding.

Lorraine‘s Senior Volunteers‘ Award, although awarded to her, recognises the Volunteering Spirit of many who have served our country in this way. Through her enthusiasm and dedication, she has provided a means for so many of us to contribute in our own small way. The reward for us all is the continued successes QMRI makes in Medical Miracles. The Ridley Road Community Men’s Shed has supported Lorraine in her fund raising efforts and congratulates her on this prestigious award. Support for Lorraine‘s Fund Raising can be made by an email to lorraineduckwitz@gmail.com Well done, Lorraine!

Familiar Faces Moving To The Hills

Bumps & Beyond BULLETIN

The Samford Patisserie is excited to take up the lease of the unique Capsule Café that is located at the front of the Terry White Chemmart Arana Hills.

The patisserie is somewhat of an institution over the range in Samford, serving up legendary cakes, pastries, desserts and sandwiches for the community to enjoy. In fact, many a Hills resident have been known to travel over to Samford to experience their delights. However, now locals don’t need to clock up the kilometers in order to do this as Anthony and Kylie, owners of the Samford Patisserie, bring their delights to the Hills community through their new tenancy.

Karen and Rod, owners of the award-winning Terry White Chemmart Arana Hills, have welcomed the Samford Patisserie to their pharmacy with open arms. As Karen tells us, the Capsule Cafe is a bustling hive of opportunity despite the unique location.

‘A café in a pharmacy in unusual but we like to do things differently! You would be surprised how many people in the morning grab their coffee and pharmacy needs at the same time or enjoy a treat following a vaccination or catch up with local mums when they are seeing the midwife,’ explains Karen.

Soon, there will also be a hot box with some of the Patisserie’s hearty pies, triangles and sausage rolls on offer. Anthony tells us their dailymade ‘Turkish Rolls To Go’ and their famous Almond Croissants are also a possibility with freshness a top priority at the Capsule Cafe. ‘We have a wonderful team of pastry chefs who make all the cakes and pastries on site, with extra love at the Patisserie in Samford. They are then transferred daily to Capsule to keep an extra fresh and great variety of cakes on offer,’ said Anthony.

‘If you have a particular favourite you’d like to see at Capsule Cafe, feel free to let one of the staff know or message the cafe through Facebook. If you need a celebration cake you will be able to order and collect them here.’

The shelves will also be filled with various Patisserie biscuits as well as specialty jams, relishes, pastes and dressings all made locally by The Larder Store. On weekends you will be able to pick up a bunch of flowers that are carefully crafted by Samford’s The Rusty Bucket Floristry.

Opening daily from 6.30am, Capsule can also provide an easy drop in coffee, a relaxing comfortable place to sit and a breakfast option on the way to work. So, be sure to pop in and say hi to the new tenants, grab a cuppa and delicious bite to eat while you are at it!

The Capsule Cafe is located in front of TerryWhite Arana Hills Pharmacy at 2 Patricks Road, Arana Hills.

Pregnancy can be overwhelming, there’s so much information to take in and no two pregnancies are the same, even for the same mother. While it’s nice to hear anecdotal stories from friends, sometimes these stories can make you feel better about what’s happening, but sometimes they can do the opposite. So, keep reminding yourself, this is your pregnancy, no one else’s. Don’t feel like you have to keep up with or compare yourself to anyone else.

From the moment you see those two little lines show up on the pregnancy test, you can feel your whole world changing. No longer are you just ‘you’, you are growing a tiny little human inside you. It’s both amazing and terrifying! But as soon as you start telling people you’re pregnant or your bump starts showing everyone, and I mean EVERYONE starts dishing out advice and sharing stories, often horror stories. Just because your (insert whichever well-meaning friend, relative or stranger) opted for a certain pain relief medication or required X number of stitches following their birth, doesn’t mean your birth will be the same. Unfortunately, this unsolicited advice will undoubtably continue once your baby is born… As long as you’re well informed, what you’re doing is safe, you’ve discussed it with your midwife or doctor, and you and your partner are happy, that’s all that really matters.

We are often reminded that millions of women around the world have been doing this whole ‘pregnancy’ thing for millions of years, but don’t let that dilute how incredible this process really is. Gather your support team around you, choose people who are on the same page as you. Make sure they are encouraging, calming, reassuring and not discouraging. Talking with your partner, midwife, doctor, friend or doula about your fears and concerns, is a good way of putting things into perspective. Look after yourself, your mind and your body, exercise and practice relaxation. Feel confident about your pregnancy and birth choices by attending birth and parenting classes. Knowledge is power. A Spectrum Of Brains

7-year-old

is a young lady with drive—drive to create, drive to overcome, and drive to share her passions with the world.

‘I’m a nice lady’, Tey assures Echo News when asked to describe herself. She is also a ‘true greenie at heart’ and the developer of her very own all-natural beauty brand. Having struggled with her diagnosis of Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder and ADHD, Tey has faced many challenges throughout her youth in engaging with extracurricular activities. Her mother, Amina, explained that, “In the early childhood education system, she was being left out of both individual and group activities despite being able to express interest.” Amina recalls a vast array of instances where Tey has attempted to engage in a new skill set at school but has been advised by teachers that they cannot manage her daughter. Unfortunately, not every classroom has the capacity to “manage” diverse children. While this has led to her exclusion, it also taught Tey to redirect her sensory seeking and diverse qualities into her own passions and interests—hence, the creation of Tey’s Cosmetics.

It was about a year ago, when Tey began school, that the girl decided to bring her brand into fruition. She’d taken interested in other kids’ make-up palettes and nail polish and realised that make-up for kids was too expensive and made of unnatural ingredients. Being a creative greenie, it was Tey’s first thought to create an alternative herself. She now takes pride and joy in making cheap, natural, skin-friendly bath and lip products for all ages. So far, the business remains “low-key”, while Tey’s family works out the kinks of marketing, media, and business-

management. It is predominantly just for Tey’s enjoyment, and a means by which she can learn about basic science, maths, art, and geography. More information and products can be found on Tey’s newly established website: www.teyscosmetics.com Of course, to this day, Tey is still learning to embrace her neurodiversity. However, with the unconditional love of her parents, as well as her own determination to give things a go, Tey is an inspiration to all. Amina shares that, ‘The love I have for Tehya is totally unchanged with her diagnosis. Tehya is the same person she was prior to the diagnosis as to who she is today. I just love her for everything she is and for her witty personality.’

Echo News looks forwards to the new heights Tey’s Cosmetics will reach, and congratulates Tey for her outstanding achievements.

How to refinance in a declining market

An update from Scott Palazzi from Loan Market

With interest rates steadily rising over the last 12 months, it’s important to make sure your mortgage rate is still competitive – which is why so many Australians are refinancing right now. However, refinancing can be more challenging when property prices are falling, as they are in many parts of the country. That’s because your equity (or the debt-free share of your property) tends to fall during a declining market, which may cause one of two problems:

1. If your equity is now lower than 20%, you may be asked to pay lenders mortgage insurance as part of the refinance – even if you’ve paid it before.

2. If your equity is now lower than 10%, you will be limited with lenders willing to accept your refinance application. That may seem unfair if you’ve been making all your home loan repayments on time. However, because refinancing technically involves applying for a new loan, lenders perform the same due diligence as they would for brand-new borrowers. Get an expert on your side

That’s why it’s a good idea to get help from a mortgage broker, who understands the home loan market and lenders’ appetites. As your broker, I will:

• Advise you on whether you’re able to refinance and whether it would be suitable for you.

• Calculate how much equity you have in your home, so I can better understand your options.

• Use my knowledge of different lenders’ credit policies and interest rates to see which lenders could offer you a better deal than your current provider.

If you decide to proceed, I’ll manage your refinance application from start to finish, so the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Two options

if you can’t refinance

If it turns out you don’t have enough equity to refinance, there are two options you may wish to consider.

First, I could ask your existing lender to reduce your rate. There would be no guarantee your lender would agree, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Second, if you had cash savings, you could use that money to pay off some of your mortgage ahead of schedule, thereby increasing your equity. However, this isn’t the right strategy for everyone, so it would be a good idea to speak to us to discuss first.

Why refinancing could be profitable

By refinancing to a suitable loan with a lower interest rate, you could potentially save tens of thousands of dollars over the life of your loan.

That’s why I strongly recommend you contact me today, to see if refinancing might be right for you.

Although refinancing may be a little more complex in a declining market, I’ve been helping other borrowers refinance, and I’d love to help you too.

A celebration of the talented women that own (or work in) local businesses in and around the region

Sisters are doing it for themselves in North-West Brisbane (and Australia wide!), with a record number of women running their own small businesses. Sprinkling sweetness around the region.

Mother of two and wife to husband Rob who also runs a community group ‘Run With Rob’, Warner local Richelle Hopkinson founded Sprinkles N Cookies almost two years ago amidst the COVID epidemic.

After almost 20 years working as a Radiation Therapist, Richelle felt the pressures of working as essential worker during COVID, causing her to re-evaluate what made her happy.

"Working in the cancer treatment area is rewarding, however very emotionally draining and very medical. I have always had a passion for creating, so, I ended up turning my weekend hobby of baking and creating for my loved ones into a side business, which still continues to bring me joy and balance with family and home life," said Richelle.

After founding Sprinkles N Cookies, the business quickly gathered momentum leading to lots of community connections, sales, and smiles.

Richelle is now renowned for her delightful vanilla cookies that don’t only look heavenly, but taste like it, too with regulars even allowing her to be part of their annual family celebrations. Furthermore, Richelle has been recognised by the Australian Cake Artists and Decorators Association for her incredible creations and has been nominated for the 'best new cookie artist' in this years awards.

But Sprinkles N Cookies isn't just any baking business as they bake and decorate not only fondant, but also royal icing cookies. There are only a few cookies artists in the Moreton Bay Council region licensed to sell royal icing cookies due to the stringent licensing procedure -and Sprinkles N Cookies is one of them! Stay tuned for classes, to learn how to decorate and make your very own cookies!

Georgia Wright

As a young, aspiring writer who dreams for the moon, Georgia Wright has certainly already begun to rattle the stars. A published author, journalist, digital editor, copy writer, and proof-reader at age 19, this girl doesn’t muck around.

Perhaps it was her childhood love of books that lit the fire in her belly to produce stories of her own. Perhaps it was the fact that 7-year-old Georgia was promised by all her teachers that her talent for writing would make her famous someday. Admittedly, it was both. Either way, by the time she had reached Year 11 at Wavell State High School, all the students knew her name, and everyone knew she had put a book on the library’s shelves.

‘Love Hurts’, Georgia’s debut novel—a witty and romantic coming-of-age tale—was co-published by the author herself and InHouse Publishing in 2020, right in the thick of COVID-19. It became quite the local hit within the community!

For work experience in Year 10, Georgia chose to jump aboard The Echo News ship for the week. The team liked her enough to keep her around, and ever since, her role at the Echo has only grown. From producing journalistic work for the company, to then also proofreading the publications, to securing the position as Digital Editor for The Little Echo, Georgia’s contribution is never-ending. Currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Creative Writing and a Minor in Journalism at Queensland University of Technology, Georgia is working hard in all departments to set up her future. Just this month, she secured an internship at the 4ZZZ radio station, where she now produces news stories to present on the radio each Thursday (tune in if you dare!). This way, she can gain a wider range of real-world journalism experience before graduating next year.

What’s more, Georgia offers freelance journalism services to businesses and individuals. She hopes to turn these services into her own business one day, with novel writing to be her side hustle. Until then, she will continue climbing up in the world from publication to publication. Star to star.

It's a win for wildlife in The Hills District with the recent purchase of a 14.5-hectare property by Moreton Bay Regional Council under the Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes program.

The property located at 519 Bunya Road, Bunya is a prime koala and wildlife habitat that will now remain untouched by development for many years to come under the program that was introduced in 2020.

The objective of Council’s Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes Program is to acquire strategic properties for the management and conservation of our region’s natural ecosystems. The properties seek to maintain and enhance connectivity of our local wildlife, through a focus on the management of green corridors and the protection of priority species into the future. This property will be Council’s fifth purchase under the program and another step towards preserving 75% of Moreton Bay’s land mass from development.

Other recent purchases of land in our region have been 13 hectares of land on Eatons Crossing Road at Eatons Hill. This land is vital wildlife habitat, with the property containing two vegetation communities suitable for koalas and the site contributes to the extension of the green corridor of Four Mile Creek. This corridor facilitates the movement and dispersal of koalas and other species towards core habitat in the Eatons

Councillor Matt Constance (Div 10) said he was glad Council had secured the first property within the Hills District of

‘It’s a major drawcard for residents to have that connection to nature and we know locals want to see more protections in place for our wildlife, so I’m glad Council was able to deliver by purchasing this key property in Bunya.’

Council officers will now monitor this land and rehabilitate it if necessary by removing invasive weeds and planting further wildlife habitat to help improve this sanctuary for wildlife.

Healthy Living for Healthy Older Adults

Health is important at any age, but it’s especially important for older adults. As we age, our bodies become more susceptible to disease, our energy levels and cognitive abilities decline, and our risk of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, increases.

Eating a balanced diet and being physically active can help reduce the chance of developing chronic diseases, improve mood and quality of life, and help maintain strength, physical function, and cognitive abilities.

limited mobility or time. Gourmet Meals is here to help! Our meals are made with health in mind, using the best quality ingredients and no preservatives; and because they are portion-controlled, they make it easier for you to stay within your calorie and nutrition budget. Albany Creek School Students Supporting Homeless Youth

Young people facing homelessness are getting their lives back on track thanks to a generous donation from Albany Creek State High School.

Money raised by the school’s students is supporting the Sponsor a Bed program at Carinity Orana. The service provides crisis accommodation for homeless people aged 16 to 21 years and young people at risk of becoming homeless. The organisation provides immediate supported accommodation at Bald Hills for up to five residents at a time, for an average stay of six months.

Ainsley Gilbert and Nadia de Gong were members of Albany Creek State High School’s Student Representative Council which late last year organised the fundraiser.

“We were looking for a charity to support and we saw how Carinity Orana provides for people who are less fortunate, and helps those who are in dire circumstances,” Ainsley said.

“I personally thought for us teenagers who may know young people who need some help sometimes, Carinity is a very helpful organisation to have in our community and to support.” Nadia said the school’s students raised around $500 through a Christmas-themed free dress day.

“We asked students to wear a Christmas shirt to school and bring a $2 donation. The support was amazing; we didn’t expect the event to be so large and for so many of our junior school students to participate,” she said.

Carinity Orana Program Manager, Dave McNair, thanked the school students for their generosity in supporting an important

local community service.

“Many of the young people referred to our service lack the basic items they need to live such as clothing, uniforms, toiletries, linen and access to transport – things we often take for granted. Our service relies on generous donors for support,” Dave said.

Anyone wishing to sponsor a bed at Carinity Orana can pledge their support online at www.carinity.org.au/campaign/ sponsor-bed or by phoning (07) 3550 3737.

Anzac Day Commemorations

Each year, Our Lady of Dolours School commemorates ANZAC Day with a special service at the school and this year was no different, with students paying homage to the sacrifices made by the men and women in our Defence forces.

Principal, Mrs Tricia Howard, explained that the school has a long and mutually supportive relationship with the Australian Defence Forces (ADF).

“Our Lady of Dolours has many Defence families within the school community, and we are very proud of the close ties we maintain with the ADF,” she said.

“We are very fortunate to have a Defence School Mentor (DSM) on staff at O.L.D. to provide specialised support to the children and families of ADF members, particularly when they are arriving at or leaving the school on a posting, or when a parent is absent from home”, said Mrs Howard.

“Our DSM, Mrs Kerri Wilson, does a wonderful job of supporting our Defence students and she always ensures that our commemoration of important dates in the Defence calendar is meaningful to everyone in the school community.”

The ANZAC Day service was held in Our Lady of Dolours’ Memorial Garden and attended by staff, students, and families. A number of special guests also took part in the service, including Councillor Andrew Wines, Gaythorne RSL Director Mr Ryan Shaw, and Defence personnel from Enoggera Barracks. The School Choir performed, and O.L.D. student, Penelope, delivered a beautiful rendition of the New Zealand National Anthem.

“The annual ANZAC tribute at O.L.D. is an important part of our school year”, said DSM, Kerri Wilson.

“Our students always attend the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the Gaythorne RSL and are proud to march with our servicemen and women in the parade, but it is really special to have our own memorial service at the school, presented by our Defence students.”

“For many of our students, the ANZAC history is the history of their own families”, said Mrs Wilson. “Quite a few of them not only have mums or dads in the Defence forces, but their grandparents and greatgrandparents also served our country. Our school ceremony commemorates all servicemen and women, and honours those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.”

“It is the perfect way to acknowledge our mums and dads on active service, as well as recognising the sacrifices their families make. Lest We Forget.”

Willmore Children Explore Peace

This year at Willmore Kindergarten we are researching what Peace means.

The UN Sustainability area we are focusing on is: Number 16 “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.”

Peace is a unique word that means different things to many of us. Learning how young children view peace is important if we are to have a society of people who care for each other. We asked the children what does peace mean to them. Some of their responses were:

“I feel peaceful when I hold a worm.”

“Water makes me feel calm and peaceful.”

“Hugs make me feel peaceful”

“Putting a shell to your ear sounds peaceful”

“ The smell of rain makes you feel peaceful.”

We ask the children other questions like “What would a peaceful world look like?” “A peaceful home?”

“A peaceful street?” “A peaceful wall?”

By noticing these things and discussing and researching the children gain a deep understanding of what peace

could be and how it feels. Recently families have returned from holidays and one child brought back a picture of him and his family sitting together and watching the sunrise and how it felt peaceful.

What does peace look like for you? How can we create peace in our community?

For more information about Willmore Kindergarten, why not visit their Open Day on Saturday 13th May from 9am -11am? This is an event for past, present and future family and friends to come and explore their beautiful community Kindergarten and experience Willmore in action.

We Play at Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre

Play means different things to different people. Some play can be aimless, fun and amusing. It can also be a focussed, highly engaging learning process. Children, adults and even animals need to play to make sense of the world, practice skills and face new challenges. Play is human nature and it is survival!

"Play is essential to childhood and all children, everywhere, have a right to have play in their life- at home, in learning environments and in the community- so that they can thrive and learn, now and in the future," statement by Early Childhood Australia Draft Statement on Play 2022.

At MPC, play is valued as a significant means for learning and allows opportunities for children and teachers together, to plan the curriculum (what happens in the day). Play can provide insights into children’s interests, skills, beliefs, joys, what makes them laugh, anxieties and frustrations, how they learn, their intentions, how they represent their ideas, what they think, their skills, knowledge, and dispositions. Allowing time for play enables children to develop their ideas, understandings, and relationships, to persist, to take a risk, to make mistakes and try again.

Play is critical for children’s development, combined with good nutrition and quality sleep, PLAY builds healthy brains. Neurological pathways, synapses and neurons are made strong when children engage in play and repetition of play.

We are lucky at MPC that our days operate with lots of opportunities to play.

Teachers and educators use their knowledge and understandings about early childhood frameworks, current research, theories of learning as well as their observations and interactions with children to support each child’s growth, learning and development. We advocate for and promote the importance of allowing time and opportunity for children to be, play and feel a rich sense of belonging to their world. Play enables children a myriad of opportunities to learn, grow and become avid, ambitious and resilient learners.

If you are a parent and would like to learn more about how we play at MPC. Come along to our annual parent Play Night on Wednesday 24th May 2023 email admin@ mpc.net.au to RSVP. Saturday

Serenata Singers Launch in 2023

The Serenata Singers performed their first concert for 2023 on the 22nd March at St Vincent’s Care, Mitchelton.

With the choir ready in the morning, the residents started to arrive quickly for a 10.30am start – standing room only. The audience was put in the mood with a Community Sing-a-Long with some old favourites such as ‘On the Sunny Side of the Street’, ‘Red Roses for a Blue Lady’, and ‘My Blue Heaven’. With everyone in full voice, the formal program began with Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ followed by a John Denver medley which had toes tapping and sing-a-long favourites from ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Les Miserables’.

Two welcome solos from choir members providing the choir with breaks and John McCollow, the Serenata Singer’s President entertained as MC. The choir finished off with ‘I Am Australian’.

The choir members commented that it was very rewarding to be performing again to an audience after the Christmas break and taking on a largely new repertoire. The Serenata Singers would like to extend a big thank you to their new Musical Director,

The next meeting of the club is on Thursday, 1st June at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. A Lion By Choice With A Lifetime Of Service

Meet Jack Connolly, he’s turning 97 this week, and although an Accountant by trade, he’s a Lion by choice, and is celebrating 61 years as one - an outstanding milestone - congratulations Jack!

Born in Gayndah, and educated at Nudgee College, Jack’s Lions story began when his career as an accountant and bank manager saw him move around Southeast Queensland. He’s been a member of five different Lions Clubs over the years. Initially joining Eagle Farm Club, his work took him to Clubs at Nambour, Southport, Grange and finally to the Lions Club of Brisbane Bunya, where he’s still a member today.

Jack has taken on multiple roles over his 61 years of service including District Governor, Cabinet Secretary (twice), President, Vice-President and various Director roles (multiple times!). These positions took him from Brisbane to Roma to San Francisco and back.

Jack shared his view on one important aspect of being a Lion.

‘In my opinion, Lions is built on friendship,’ he said.

‘It sort of grows on you.’

‘Getting involved and meeting people is the most enjoyable part of being a Lion.’

Jack reflected on one of the biggest changes since he joined, the ‘inclusion of women’, which he said was needed.

‘Different talents were required, not just businessmen.’

‘We began doing far more social work and fellowship, and giving more to those in need,’ he shared.

When asked about the future of Lions, Jack said he firmly believes there’s still a place in the world for service clubs and

their survival hinges on our ability to recruit new members to lighten the load.

‘Many hands make light work,’ Jack said.

‘Give it a go, come and see what we’re all about.’ For more information about the Brisbane Bunya Lions Club visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LionsBrisbane or look up their website https://brisbanebunya.qld.lions.org. au

A Busy Season Ahead At HOG

An update from the Hills Organic Community Garden

Our summer months have been rather hot and dry, which is not so good for our garden. Very little has been grown over the last few months with not much produce to share. However, autumn has arrived and hopefully it will bring cooler temperatures.

There is a lot of work to be done at the garden this month with a view to getting the beds ready for planting. They all need topping up with new soil, compost, and fertiliser added, along with time to rest. Planting will take place when the temperatures get cooler to give the young plants a chance to survive and grow.

Our vegetable planting will consist of broccoli, spinach, radish, snow peas, silver beet, cauliflower, cabbages, zucchinis, eggplant, lettuce, beetroot and tomatoes. As it is not recommended to plant the same crop in the same bed as the previous season, we ensure that crop rotation is carried out. This is the fun time of the year for the Community Garden and also a busy time as the newly planted seedlings will need regular watering and fertilizing.

The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier, so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Our members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm They also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya, next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors For more information, visit www.hog.org. au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980. We look forward to meeting you!

The Impacts Of Childbirth No One Talks About

This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry.

It is estimated that one in three women experience trauma during childbirth.

Once we started talking about it together, we realise how common it actually is. Giving birth for some women is the most important thing in life they can do, so when they have a traumatic birth, this moment can get taken away from them. It can be a combination of psychological trauma, physical injury, or long-term recovery. What we expected to happen during our birth compared to what actually happened. And there is still taboo and shame to talk about it openly, especially if we didn’t seek help immediately after. Sometimes we are just trying so hard to manage with a newborn, our needs are not a priority because it can feel like we are just trying to make it through the day. We now feel there are time limits in talking about our birth trauma, so we keep everything inside, or sometimes we don’t realise that our experience was actually traumatic. Sometimes there are even barriers for women to get support, even when they ask. This means that people’s words, responses or how we are spoken to, all contribute to the additional trauma, guilt and shame.

Imagine trying to be vulnerable and opening up about the traumatic experience during birth, and you are then you hear this;

• That’s just what happens

• Of course your body won’t be the same

• What did you expect, you’ve just had a baby?

• Happens to everyone

• That’s nothing, my birth was way worse

After this, being vulnerable and opening up is now punished because this makes you feel ignored, dismissed, or you are overreacting. So, you shut down, sometimes feel like you are the inconvenience and don’t want to mention it again.

So, what defines a traumatic birth? If you feel your birth experience was distressing, disturbing or you couldn’t cope psychologically it was traumatic. During birth you may be feeling out of control because you were not involved in the decision-making process. The experience was too big and too terrifying because it didn’t go as we expected. This results in a heightened state of emotional distress. Trauma is defined as ‘any situation that overwhelms our capacity to cope’.

You are the only person who can decide if it was traumatic for you. No one else. Sometimes understanding this can sound unmeasurable, inaccurate, undefinable, or invalid… but so is experiencing personal trauma. We sometimes don’t have a choice about how trauma is processed within our body and our nervous system. Sometimes with trauma it can’t be rationally controlled or a choice. However, you may be left with ‘measurable symptoms.’ This can look like anxiety, depression, fearful flashbacks, permanent pain, guilty numb. Panic attacks, hyper- vigilance, feelings of failure, disappointment, Lack of confidence, worthlessness, disregarded, impacted your sense of worth or lack of motivation. Additionally, there has been some real and disturbing results about our Aussie hospital systems when it comes to childbirth– more than 1 in 10 women interviewed for the study (peer reviewed journal Violence Against Women) reported they were made to feel violated, powerless or dehumanised while giving birth in the past 5 years – and have experienced treatment that amounted to ‘Obstetric Violence’.

Yes, this is a lot and it can be extremely scary and overwhelming, but it can always get better. Grief is like glitter. When you try to clean it up, you will never get it all. Even long after the event, you will still find glitter tucked away in the corners. It will always be there. But you are so strong and so beautiful; you will be able to heal. There is always help. This is me empowering you to have a voice and be heard. Make birth trauma common knowledge. Help reduce isolation and make mums and dads feel like we don’t have to suffer in silence. Dads can actually experience vicarious trauma by witnessing the event, feeling too helpless to your pain and powerless to make it stop. You are not an inconvenience. Understand that you are important, and you are not alone. Be brave and reach out.

THE FERNY REPORT

Cheers!

In an Australian-first, the Palaszczuk Government will expand the Containers for Change program to include glass wine and spirit bottles from November 1, 2023. Since the start of the program, our community has made well over one million dollars from containers deposited.

Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Update

Since the pandemic, as anyone who has been building a home or renovation knows, the building industry has faced difficulties with building supply costs, supply chain issues, labour shortages, and weather and flooding events.

Broad Construction, the company building the TOD, have announced they are facing significant delays in delivering the project. Although you may have seen the crane come down recently, there is still a great deal of work remaining to do inside the building.

The multi-level carpark, which is the part of the project I am most anxious to see completed is currently past its original delivery date and the Queensland Government is working with all concerned to resolve the issues Broad is facing to deliver the project as soon as possible.

Ferny Grove Markets Update

As you may read on my Facebook Page, the present Ferny Grove Markets have closed. Colin, the convenor, has decided to not take up the new contract offer from Queensland Rail (QR) and has moved his business to the Kedron Wavell Services Club in Chermside.

I am disappointed with this decision as once I forced QR to the negotiating table all parties involved in the negotiation worked in good faith to deliver the outcome Colin had requested.

As private businessman however, Colin is well within his rights to make a business decision which is best for him. I wish him all the best for the future.

The future for the markets at Ferny Grove remains open.

The offer QR made to Colin still stands for anyone who would like to run the markets at Ferny Grove. If you or anyone you know may be interested, please contact my office and my staff will connect you with the QR Leasing Team.

Have your say on Queensland’s Rental Laws

With more Queenslanders renting, and renting for longer, it is important that our rental laws reflect the modern rental market. The Queensland Government has released the Rental Law Options Paper (qld.gov.au/rentinginqld) and is inviting you to have your say.

Feedback is being sought on proposed changes including safety, security, and accessibility modifications; minor personalisation changes; rules governing privacy and access; and a review of the bond, fees and charges relating to transparency and accountability.

Gambling Community Benefit Fund now open

A maximum of $35,000 per organisation is available under Round 117 and applications will close at midnight on 31 May 2023. Organisations don’t need to hire a professional grant writer to apply – they can read the Fund guidelines and tell their story in their own words. Visit https://bit.ly/2Y0Cxkg for more information.

Neighbour Day and Easter Egg Hunt 2023

Finally! After three years of disruptions, we managed to celebrate and host our Annual Neighbour Day Event with the eagerly anticipated Easter Egg Hunt again sponsored by Hicks Real Estate. More than 2000 locals came down to Teralba Park on Sunday April 2nd to join in the fun and games with some of our wonderful community organisations.

We had over 25 stalls from local Community Groups and were entertained by the Brisbane Brass Band and the National Servicemen‘s Memorial Pipe Band.

Kids scrambled for Easter Eggs and participated in some good old-fashioned games of tug-o-war, sack races, egg & spoon races and 3 legged races.

I’d like to thank all our participants for their great efforts to make it such a fun morning, not forgetting our Emergency Services teams who do such a great job and let the kids clamber through their vehicles!

Congratulations to Youth Member for Everton, Vidar Pittendreigh on his great work so far as the youth advocate for the Everton electorate. I look forward to working closely with Vidar throughout the year to improve representation of young people in Everton and state-wide.

It was my pleasure to welcome the senior school leader’s from Everton Park State High School and Albany Creek State High School to Parliament House recently. I enjoyed hearing lots of bright ideas about how we can improve our state and I‘m confident our future is in good hands!
