A Green-Thumbed Gift for the Community

Two years ago, passionate ‘edible gardener’ Kylie Stapleton suggested to Moreton Bay Regional Council that our community deserves a ‘library garden’.

Council was enthusiastic and embraced the idea, to place one at the Arana Hills Library, however plans were put on hold throughout last year due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Nevertheless, with sheer dedication, Kylie persisted through the planning stages with Council and earlier this year they had everything in place to start the Library Garden.

But what on earth is a Library Garden?

Well, if you ask Kylie, her partner Steve Lambert, or their neighbour Alex, they would tell you that construction of a library garden is no easy task and a lot of hard work! Taking an entire weekend to piece together and garnish with finishing touches, Kylie’s passion project sure involved a lot of hard work and planning. Nevertheless, in her words, ‘It was a lot of physical labour, but we all had the satisfaction of creating something exciting for our community.’

For that is what a library garden is—a little special something for locals to enjoy. Its purpose is to teach people how to plant, harvest, save seeds, and propagate / help maintain a garden. It is hoped that the garden can be used for years to come to inspire, empower and educate the public on how edible plants grow. It has been designed to be accessible with the well-spaced out (and Plants are already blooming in the gardens possum-proofed!!) garden beds.

The current plantings include peas, lettuce, capsicum, rainbow chard, parsley, basil, mint, dill, and a Lotsa-lemons and Tahitian Lime tree. There are also a few other fruit trees ready to plant!

Having been actively involved with The Hills District & Bunya Garden Competition, as well as using her own garden to produce most of her Kylie with her partner Steve with the finished gardens home’s fresh food, Kylie certainly knows her way around the ropes. Now, she wishes to pass on some of her knowledge and enthusiasm to others in our neighbourhood. To her delight, the community has already begun to embrace her green-thumbed gift.

On another note, Moreton Bay Regional Council is currently in the process of joining the ‘Grow it Local’ platform.

The intention behind joining the platform is to generate conversations, connections throughout the region, and host themed events such as talks, workshops and competitions (e.g., Moreton Bay’s wonkiest vegetable). Council hasn’t announced a firm date yet of when it will start up, but we will keep you posted here at The Hills Echo. THANK YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY! Dear Editor, At about 4.30pm on the 10th June, my 6 month old Kelpie broke off his lead along Collins Road. Whether he thought it was play time, I have no idea. I tried in vain to coax him back to me but he refused and panic set in as he darted along the busy road, even crossing it at one point when he saw another dog. I am so grateful to the number of drivers - and - there were many, who took such care and stopped to help me catch him.

I would like to thank them all. If it wasn’t for their care I have no doubt the outcome would have been very different. Thank you!

PROJECT UPDATE: Harry Evans Park Proposal discontinued

In October of last year, Moreton Bay Regional Council unveiled a plan to construct a new shared cycle and pedestrian pathway and a new playground at Harry Evans Park, Arana Hills between Dinterra Avenue and Jane Street. This pathway would have ultimately connected with the popular Kedron Brook Bikeway.

However, with environmental considerations in mind, Council has decided to not proceed with the proposed shared pathway and playground.

‘While the proposed alignment of the shared pathway had been selected to minimise impact on the native vegetation and wildlife, after extensive ecological assessment and consideration of views and advice from the community, the likely impacts on the environment were considered too great.

The project will therefore take a new direction and not proceed as initially proposed,’ Mayor Peter Flannery stated.

Council are investigating the rehabilitation of the bushland in Harry Evans Park and looking to remove weeds and nonnative species.

As outlined in the initial proposal, the demolition of the old scout hall near Dinterra Avenue that was home to the Golden Valley Keperra Lions will still proceed. This land will also form part of the area to be rehabilitated. It should be noted that the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club will not be without a roof over thier head as they will still be relocating to a brandnew den at James Drysdale Reserve, Bunya

Parks and Green Spaces brought into Focus in 2021/2022 Budget

More than $5 million has been secured to modernise parks and green spaces across Division 10 over the next few years, as part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s ongoing investment in The Hills District’s reputation for popular outdoor recreation amenities.

Councillor Matt Constance said he was proud to be delivering more variety in public play and gathering spaces, which is what locals have been calling for in their suburbs.

‘Over the next 12 months, there’ll be a number of new playgrounds, renewals and upgrades for local parks, including Pine Hills Park in Arana Hills, Richard Lee Reserve in Albany Creek and Sylvia Gibbs Park in Everton Hills,’ Cr Constance said.

‘The old skate park at Albany Creek will get an awesome $1.2 million upgrade to create a contemporary new play space for children, families and thrill seekers to enjoy - just wait until you see this concept design!’

In addition, nearly $1 million has been secured to convert a small pitch at James Drysdale Reserve in Bunya into a fullsized senior soccer field from, exciting news for the young soccer fans in our region.

This coming financial year will also see concept designs for the redevelopment of the old Club Arana building at 303 Dawson Parade commencing. This area will be transformed into an entirely new community space based on community feedback that was gathered earlier in the year.

Budget 2021-22 will also fast track design work for a bridge connection at Boundary Park to the Kedron Brook Bikeway

to help improve active transport connectivity through The Hills District.

Budget 2021-22 delivers a record $245 million capital works program and a renewed focus on community engagement, to ensure every action of Council aligns with the values of our local community.

Youngster Lifting Her Way To Powerlifting

Those are two words to describe The Hills’ amazing Emily, a young and determined powerlifter who is bound for the record books. A star in the making, here is her inspiring journey:

2019 marked the beginning of Emily’s passion for powerlifting.

Only 14 years old at the time, Emily begged her mum—a gym enthusiast herself—to let her join the gym. The Ritual HQ family welcomed the youngster with open arms, introducing her to their world full of strong, female powerlifters. Emily adored watching their craft and was intrigued by their strength and rapt by their discipline. One day, Chantal (Emily and her mum’s coach) asked Emily if she would like to partake in a weekly, personal training session to give the sport a go.

Needless to say, it was love at first lift.

However, it wasn’t until 2020 that Emily began to really dedicate her mind and body to powerlifting. At Civil Raw 3.0, Emily’s first competition, she came to the realisation that this sport was not only fun, but physically and mentally lifechanging. With her mum’s support, Emily began to take powerlifting more seriously.

Then came this year, 2021, in which Emily’s New Years’ resolutions, tough gym sessions, and silent prayers finally began to pay off. In January, Chantal and Emily decided to push themselves toward February’s Capo Sanction Competition—a qualifier competition to compete in the annual National Powerlifting Competition in Perth.

Weighing in at 53.5kgs, Emily was over the moon to achieve a total lifting weight of 240kgs across her 3 lifts on the day.

That’s a whopping 4 and a half times her body weight! She

Emily with fellow powerlifter Hazel finished the day on a 92.5kgs squat (a new PB!!), a 47.5kgs bench press and a 100kgs deadlift, which was also a new PB. As a result of her outstanding performance, Emily qualified and came out victorious in second place—a title won against 11 other inspiring women that had been refining their technique for years.

Emily’s mum, Tamsyn Kiely, exclaims, ‘This is a huge accomplishment and we, her family, as well as her gym family, are very proud of her. However, what we are most proud of is the consistency, commitment, and dedication it has taken for Emily to reach this point!’

Tamsyn went on to reveal that the family will indeed be travelling to Perth in August so that Emily can compete at Nationals against teenagers from all over Australia—a huge step up from a 12-woman competition. At age 16, this is not only super exciting, but it is also an impressive achievement for a 2nd year powerlifter. Emily's goals for CAPO Nationals competition are to complete a 120kgs squat, a 55kgs bench press, and a 125kgs deadlift. Also, she hopes to join the Ritual HQ 300 club before her 17th birthday. These are big goals, Emily knows. But with her drive and dedication, no one doubts her ability to achieve these lifts.

A “village vibe” is coming to Ferny Grove with long-term leases secured for major tenants for the $140million Ferny Grove Central development .

The answer is Warwick Brown, a man who spent his childhood living the farm life on the outskirts of Dayboro.

From chasing cows, to getting chased by cows, to stacking motorbikes and learning how to gracefully fall off horses, Warwick sure made the most of it. The food especially. Public transport use it or lose it?

An update from Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association (FGUK RA)

With anticipated car-parking pressures at the Ferny Grove train station during TOD construction, our Association has been working with local and State authorities to find solutions to ease inconvenience for commuters and those who live close to the station.

As a refresher, we estimate that across the 28-month development commencing June 2021, there will be a reduction of between 326 and 188 car parking spaces compared to now.

Upon completion, the total number of spaces will be 1416, compared to the current 973 spaces.

Avenues we’ve explored with decision-makers to alleviate the long-term parking pressures included temporary use of Movilla Park as a flow-over carpark and increased bus services to encourage commuters to leave their cars at home and provide a more convenient alternative for accessing the train station.

Unfortunately, we’ve been unsuccessful in securing any of these options, however through Facebook, printed flyers, public meetings and this column, we've endeavoured to keep

the community informed of what to expect as the TOD takes shape.

Our request for more frequent bus services to and from the station to take pressure off the reduced car park capacity raised an interesting dilemma. Translink’s data indicates that our local bus services are, on average, operating at less than 50 percent capacity. Because of this, Translink have no plans to introduce additional trips even during the TOD construction.

They will however continue to monitor services against local passenger demand.

This response was disappointing as it failed to explore why there is less than 50 percent patronage at the moment, nor whether the TOD construction constitutes a major enough disruption that additional bus services could be warranted regardless of current-state patronage.

So what’s the solution for our community if car parking issues at the TOD become untenable? Do we each increase use of the bus service so we can demonstrate genuine demand ? Do we write to Translink outlining whether their current bus service meets our typical daily needs and whether this influences our use of the bus service now and in the future? Do we ask the Lord Mayor to include Ferny Grove in its new shared e-bike scheme ?

Our Association is open to creative solutions and will continue to engage with State and Local representatives to alleviate as much traffic and parking disruption as possible until the TOD is completed.

Robots Arrive at Local Hospital

The robotic surgical assistant Da Vinci Xi has arrived at North West Private Hospital in Everton Park, helping support the latest surgical capabilities.

The da Vinci Xi system allows the surgeon to control the da Vinci robot from a console.

The surgeon’s hand movements are translated to perform tiny movements within the body in real time. The system also offers optimised 3D vision, magnification and motion tremor control are designed to help the surgeon with greater dexterity and precision.

The robotic technology will help empower surgeons with minimally invasive surgical options for patients and the Dr Meade working with robotic assistant will be used for Da Vinci Xi a variety of procedures including colorectal, urology, gynaecology and general surgery.

Colorectal surgeon Dr Brian Meade performed the first surgery utilising the Da Vinci Xi robot at North West in mid-May. ‘For me, it’s about instrument advancements – it enhances ergonomics and my visualisation of tissues. It’s much easier to control instruments and optics and improves dexterity and suturing in tight spaces,’ Dr Meade said.

We have some sad news to report this month. One of our dedicated members Gloria Badke passed away on the 28th May 2021. She been unwell for a few years and had been in and out of hospital for quite some time.

Gloria - a Club member since 1998- held most positions on the Committee! She was also a Life Member and worked tirelessly for our club, and will be missed a great deal.

The upcoming events are as follows:• 2nd July: Bingo and Winter Warmers, a selection of hot soups.

Hope Springs Eternal in Ferny Grove History

An update from The Brisbane Tramway Museum By David Fryer.

A Trolley Bus under construction When Alexander Pope coined the phrase ‘Hope Springs Eternal’ in his thumping 2,300-word philosophical poem of 1734, little did he know that it would be used to promote hi-tech electric buses in Brisbane over two centuries later.

To be fair, Pope had never heard of Brisbane because it didn’t officially exist at the time, though he probably heard rumours of Hoogh Landt - a strange continent in the southern hemisphere first described by Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon in 1606. It is better known as Queensland today.

And Pope certainly had no concept of electrically powered transport because the first example – a railway locomotive built by Scottish chemist Robert Davidson – didn’t appear until 1837, almost a century after his death in 1744. However, fellow countryman - Charles Hope - was certainly fascinated with innovative transportation. It’s here that the story gets interesting for Brisbane readers.

Charles Lowther Hope was born in 1892 in rural Gloucestershire, a sprawling county in the south-west of England. Gloucestershire is famous for magnificent mangelwurzels, prodigious pigs, Pam Ayres and Prince Charles, but it also yielded the world’s first rotary lawnmower with a patent lodged by Edwin Budding in 1830 (he also invented the adjustable spanner, or “shifter” as we say in Australia).

Hope was determined to succeed despite being the son of impoverished and illiterate parents. At the age of 17 he helped out at a local blacksmith’s forge whilst studying engineering at night. Then, two years later, he was apprenticed to a local coach-building factory. It was here that he gained useful skills for construction of motor car and bus bodies. The skills were further honed after joining the prestigious coachbuilder Hooper and Co., manufacturers of high-quality carriages for Queen Victoria and Edward VII (Hooper also built luxury bodies to order for Rolls-Royce and Daimler).

But it still wasn’t enough for an ambitious young man. Hope moved to Sydney in 1912, hoping to make his fortune, but opportunities were limited. After a succession of unrewarding jobs he opened his own business, Charles Hope Ltd, in Lismore in 1914. The company made sulkies and springs for motor cars and in 1924 Hope expanded by opening Monarch Engineering Works in Brisbane. By the late twenties he boasted to supplying 80% of vehicle springs for Australia.

The Great Depression of 1929 impacted heavily, but Hope was undeterred and with the help of his brother, Harold, Hope’s Body Works Pty Ltd was formed in Brisbane in 1932. By the late-thirties, Hope had agents in Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane and it was at this time the slogan - Hope Springs Eternal - first appeared.

Hope introduced a kerosene-powered refrigerator for the domestic market in 1939, but production was short lived and they switched to servicing American military vehicles during WW2. Manufacturing resumed immediately after the war.

By 1953, over 100,000 households used Hope Cold Flame refrigerators. Bespoke coachbuilding also prospered thanks in part to a Brisbane City Council contract for a fleet of bus bodies.

Hope certainly springs eternal at the Brisbane Tramway Museum as the first Hope electric trolleybus still survives.

The platinum-silver people parcel is celebrating a Platinum Birthday (her seventieth) this year, so don’t miss the Cavalcade of Electric Vehicles, past and present, on the 22nd of August.

Everton Park High Turns 60!

A monthly update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc

The Society would like to send a special 'shout out' this month to the wonderful Everton Park State High School – which turns 60 years young in 2021!

The school was originally gazetted in September 1960 as the Stafford State High School. It was renamed in December that year to Everton Park State High School and opened to students – at its location on Stafford Road – on 23 January 1961.

Over the years, the school has been home to some notable students, including Oscar winner and former Australian of the Year, Geoffrey Rush, rugby league identities Paul Vautin and Adrian Lam, professional squash players Michelle and Rodney Martin, and former bass player with the Masters Apprentices and John Farnham manager, Glenn Wheatley.

On Saturday 31st July, the school will have its official 60th anniversary celebrations with a Market Day from 10am to 1pm and a gala evening in the Performing Arts Centre from 6pm. Catching Up With The Past At Cedar An update from the Samford Museum

Samford Museum members were thrilled to receive an invitation to participate in Cedar Creek Hall’s open day. A day of catching up with old friends, introducing family ‘to where we used to live,’ as well as sharing photos and memories was had by all. Here is a little bit of a snippet of some of the stories on offer on the day:When the boys in the band that played at Cedar Creek/Closeburn Hall went to WW2, local lady Thelma Knight became the pianist and played at Cedar Creek, Samford, and Samsonvale dances. She was also a relief pianist for Laceys Creek and Dayboro dances. Thelma’s parents arrived at Kobble Station about 1923, then in 1939 transferred to the Samsonvale Station.

A group of local farmers used to gather at the hall fortnightly to play euchre. A farmers’ night out before today’s mens’ sheds.

The following day was the ever-popular Anzac Day event at the museum. Volunteers noticed several visitors research their family history following on from the museum’s display at Cedar Creek Hall. Children also had a great time, eagerly returning from their completed treasure hunts (hoping they were correct!) to receive their penny reward. Older children were kept busy making copper poppies in the blacksmith shop whilst the adults browsed displays or shared stories over tea and fresh damper.

A few months back, the museum participated in the National Trust’s Heritage Month, with launch of Peter Burden’s and Graham Bailey’s revised book ‘The Camp Mountain Railway

Roy Atfield Arthy

Born 19th October 1919 | From Gympie, QLD

When the war broke out Roy was playing football (Rugby League) at Curran, and he signed up right away in 1939. After training in Darwin, Roy was sent to the Middle East, Benghazi in Lybia, Syria and eventually to New Guinea.

Roy offered some interesting insight into the Japanese tactics of fighting in the jungles and mountains of New Guinea.

A keen North Queensland Cowboys supporter, Roy celebrated his 100th Birthday at the Cooroy RSL Sub-Branch in 2019. Roy passed away in February of last year.

Bill Elliott

Born 19th August 1921 | From Ayr, QLD

Bill speaks of the “Yellow Peril” scare in 1939 and the push for men to join the militia.

Both Bill (17) and his brother (15) joined the Army in 1939 but were taken into the infantry (31st Battalion) full time when Japan entered the war in December of 1941.

Bill speaks of hearing Tokyo Rose on the radio threatening Australia, before he was deployed to New Guinea. Bill was discharged due to injury and he shares stories of Townsville, American troops and what life was like after the war.

Alan Brown Born 21st March 1922 | From Stanthorpe, QLD

Alan joined the Airforce in 1941 with a mission to become a Night Fighter.

He and his co-pilot Vic ‘Possum’ Whitfield, a master of astro navigation were the first Australians to land in Greece after the German occupation.

Alan received a special commendation from the President of Greece at Expo 88 here in Brisbane.

Alan continued his love of flying after the war, founding gliding clubs across the Sunshine Coast area of Queensland. Alan passed away in May of 2019.

World Class Medical Researchers with real outcomes An update from the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club

Recently I attended a presentation at Royal on the Park – Brisbane to listen to some brilliant Brisbane based Medical Researchers.

Nicole Zanyat from UQ TRI, Associate Professor Carlos Salomon, Professor Trent Munro, Dr Olivia Holland, Associate Professor Fiona Simpson and Mrs Charmaine Keal from SPARQ-ed were among the inspirational speakers present on the day.

Since 1963, Queensland Lions Clubs have supported over 50 Medical Researchers who had an idea, but not the finance, to get their research moving. Here are just a few of the topics we heard a bit about at the presentation.

• Professor Carlos discussed his work in Ovarian Cancer early detection so survival rates increase.

• Professor Trent spoke about UQ’s work on the COVID 19 vaccine. How the UQ vaccine worked but their work

• Dr Olivia Holland works on Diabetes during Pregnancy (there are 1.7 million diabetics in Australia today – the population of South Australia). It’s the leading cause of Adult Blindness, Limb amputation and Heart Disease in Australia. Olivia advised that after pregnancy half of the women will go on to have type 2 diabetes later in life.

• Professor Fiona Simpson discovered the genetic pathway that gives your eyes and hair their colour, leading to melanoma research. Amazing work in cancer research working on how different drugs effect cancers more differently, and now by using immunotherapy, they can get the drugs to be 100% effective.

• Mrs Charmaine Keal spoke about SPARQ – ed (Students Performing Advanced Research Queensland) this program identifies new potential researchers through the School system. They spend a week in Brisbane doing actual research.

There are many Research Foundations around the World, however Queensland - Brisbane in particular - punches above its weight, providing World Class research with real outcomes.

Professor Ian Frazer (Cervical Cancer – Gardasil fame) was a recipient of a Lions fellowship.

So, while Lions give back to the local Community they also support causes that have National and International impact.

I was truly humbled by the wealth of knowledge we have in our Brisbane Researchers as well as their passion and willingness to share their journey and explain what they do.

Learning made fun at the Samford Show

The Samford Show prides itself on the range of attractions that change from year to year while sticking to the basics. One of our key objectives this year is to provide fun learning experiences for kids of all ages. Exhibitions and lessons in science, the environment, and nature, will be all around the Grounds.

Talents of Cake Decorators showcased at recent workshop

Serenata Celebrates!

An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association Recently another branch of our association held a Demonstration Day that a number of our members attended.

These days provide a wonderful chance to learn from other decorators and to catch up with cake decorating friends, all for a minimal cost. One of our members, Robyn Reed was a demonstrator on the day and she made a beautiful mermaid sitting on a rock. We were all fascinated to watch this creation as it was all done freehand.

The Brisbane North Cake Decorators are a branch of the Qld Cake Decorators Association and are a not-for-profit organisation. They foster the art of cake decorating and love sharing their knowledge with each other.

Members meet at the Arana Hills Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade Arana Hills on the third Saturday of each month, commencing at 1pm. ]Afternoons are busy usually with a workshop or demonstration of some particular technique, afternoon tea, a very short business meeting and usually lots of laughter!

New members - experienced or new to cake decorating - are always welcome.

The celebratory concert at The Gap Uniting Church

The Serenata Singers presented a belated 50th anniversary concert for family, friends and former members of the choir at The Gap Uniting Church on Saturday afternoon, 29 May 2021.

In 1970, The Gap and District Musical Society was founded.

In 2020, it achieved its 50th anniversary under the name Serenata Singers. Just as activities to observe the occasion were being planned, COVID-19 arrived in Australia and it became necessary to defer any celebrations. Indeed, 2020 saw the choir cancel all its scheduled performances.

Better late than never! The choir was keen to return to performing and relished the opportunity to sing in front of an appreciative audience. Under a slide show of photos from the choir’s history, the choir presented a varied program of medleys from Broadway musicals, folk and rock songs. A highlight was the choir’s performance of “Singing with Friends”, an original composition composed for the choir by Lynette Reville. Guest performances included a violin solo by Ran Luo, a saxophone number from Angus Campbell, and a piano duet by Lois Cutmore and Alison Siemon. The audience joined in enthusiastically with the community sing-a-long numbers.

After the concert, there was a ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake and much conversation and catching up over coffee, tea and cakes (following COVID-safe guidelines of course).

No Hibernation for HOG this Glorious Winter

From The Hills Organic Garden Community What a difference the cooler weather makes! Over the last few weeks, we have been very busy planting vegetables for our spring harvest and with the cooler weather, our little seedlings are now starting to flourish.

We have Pak Choy, Shallots, Spinach, Beetroot, Lettuce, Silver beet, Tomatoes, Cauliflowers, Cabbages, Broccoli, Beans, Snow peas, Eggplant, Brussel Sprouts, Carrots and Potatoes all doing very well.

Our members are all enjoying their time at the garden as it is so pleasant to be out in the sunshine watering and weeding and maintaining our beautiful community garden. We have a wonderful bunch of keen gardeners who are all willing to lend a hand.

Each Sunday afternoon, we gather at the garden to tend to the plants and keep the surrounds neat and tidy.

At the moment, our herb garden has flowering basil that is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), thyme, tarragon, mother of herbs and garlic chives.

The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people From the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden.

Our members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm.

As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance.

Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry. This month, Elena focuses on the topic of 'Self-Sabotage'

‘Self-Sabotage is a sweet romance.’ It's like a relationship that you know is bad for you, but just can’t seem to shake – and don’t know why. It can be little things, like always seeming to be running late, the ultimate procrastinator, being best mates with the fridge and eating your feelings away, fear of committing to that long-term safe relationship, have every excuse under the sun why you can’t attend that dinner party, paid for that gym membership but there is always a reason why you can’t go?

Bizarre how you can get a little ‘thrill’ from the adrenaline and anxiety of being put under the pump - like completing that work assignment only hours before it is due. But why do I do that? Why can’t I just get it together? These are examples of self-sabotage; when you consciously (or unconsciously) make decisions that ruin your attempts at success, destroy the ability to complete tasks to the best of your ability or damage your personal/professional goals.

You may think this sounds innocent enough, I am sure reading this it reminds you of someone – yes, sometimes we just think of them as ‘lazy’ or not motivated. To be honest, it is really

common, there are just different extremes. Realising when it becomes destructive is the key. And more importantly, why. People who self-sabotage can sometimes act passiveaggressively, defensive, deflective or begin to withdraw. It can be overlooked as an innocent sleep in or just those extra couple of drinks in the afternoon until you realise you are ‘tipsy’ and avoiding family time with the kids. It can become established patterns of procrastination (anxious, fun, perfectionist and ‘plenty of time’), substance abuse, avoiding social connections, notoriously late, intimacy issues and fear of commitment.

Think of it like you are a covert spy secretly destroying or undermining your own goals and values. And then talking trash about yourself because you can’t get it together! Why did I do that!

Self-sabotage can be a little monster because it typically is motivated by lack of self-esteem. Self-sabotage can also be learned coping mechanisms from the past to cope or survive. I am here to let you know that that little monster on your shoulder talking in your ear doesn’t have to be there, if the nasty little voice is speaking up more often and more frequently, than we have to figure out a way how make you strong again.

Firstly, understand if you are consciously choosing these decisions or if it has now become an unconscious habit? If it is conscious then that is great, this is an easier path to follow.

Otherwise, it could be unconscious which may need some more work since you haven’t realised you are purposefully attacking yourself - until now.

So, if you realise you are sabotaging your success and future happiness, recognise your ‘patterns’. When you can understand a pattern, you are more likely to have success at making positive change. For example, procrastination = how often does it happen, what context does it occur (work, relationships, personal goals) what happens before the avoidance that makes you sabotage yourself and then how do you feel when you know you have ‘done it again’? Next, think about the emotions that are connected to the behaviour – anxiety, anger, worthlessness, fear. These emotions are very powerful and can be clouding your rational thoughts, making you confused and overwhelmed. When you think this way, challenge your thoughts - don’t believe everything you think - sometimes it can be a learned behaviour to have negative self-talk, but you are worth it and yes, you are important. Finally, don’t give up on yourself. When you can understand this cycle, know that it is common and believe you deserve better, you can then practice being kind to yourself and being patient when you feel overwhelmed, anxious, upset or frustrated. Learn to support yourself with positive self-talk. You are not a bad person, you are trying your best, you are stronger than you give myself credit for, and deserve better – kick that monster to the kerb!

We create our own reality

‘We create our own reality.’ How do we do this?

And how does this apply to the most fundamentally important experience in our lives: our relationships?

What we choose to think, feel and then act out from that thought, determines the reality we experience.

That sounds easy enough. However, when you understand that for the majority of the time we are deeply unconscious about why we are thinking, feeling and acting the way we are, then we can see that this is really not so simple. It is in the realm of these unconscious reactive behaviour patterns that relationships really become unstuck.

The difficulties around difference that relationships experience, are our growth challenges. Unfortunately, we often don‘t see or use them this way, and the reality we experience is painful and confusing. The trick to turning a negative interaction into a more positive one is to get past the content (that‘s anything you‘re arguing about) and decode each step of the interaction by asking the question: ‘Why do I think, feel and then act the way I do when I think or feel you are behaving in that way?’

This step immediately makes us become more present and conscious as to what is happening. Remember: Everything the other person feels you are doing is interpreted through their set of filters, which is determined by all their conditioning from their life experiences and the degree of consciousness that they bring to bear at that moment. This is also true for you.

The degree of reactivity and emotionality we exhibit in any situation is in direct proportion to the degree of unconscious threat/fear that we experience. Our fear of not being loved, being rejected, and of the lack of safety we experience because of this, is at the heart of most relationship discord.

And guess what? This all operates in the energetic field. We react, not so much to what is said, but to what we feel is coming at us from the other person. If we feel we are under attack we usually defend with attack. We stop listening. We stop trying to understand, we go into protection mode, and the interaction spins further out of control. At this point it makes equitable resolution impossible. In relationships these are the things we have to deal with differently if we want change.

In the next article I will break down a commonly experienced problematic interaction to show how this works.

Limitless Facets to Lapidary News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

There are many aspects to the Lapidary hobby.

If someone joins a Lapidary Club they will be amazed at the branches of the hobby which they can be involved in.

Firstly, there is cabochon cutting. This can be either to create a collection of cabochons of various material and sizes or fit the cut stones into ready made jewellery pieces.

These ‘findings’, as they are called, come in standard sizes such as 30x40mm and 30x22mm and are available in gold and silver. There is also the option of making your own jewellery from silver wire and silver plate.

Then there is slicing collected stones. If they are suitable, polishing the faces of the stones to form a collection. Stone halves need to be perfectly flat and smooth in order to then be polished. Depending on the size of the cut stone, they are generally ground down with silicon carbide grit, starting off with coarse and ending up with fine before being polished on a leather buff with polishing powder.

There is also ‘tumbling,’ which are small stones in a barrel with added water and silicon carbide grit. Generally, these barrels are composed of a hard material, like poly, and of at least a 20cm diameter. The barrels rotate on a set of rollers and need to be continuously going for weeks at a time in order to grind the stones smooth. It is advisable to pre-shape your stone to the desired shape you wish the end product to be.

The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its clubrooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The Club caters for Gemstone enthusiasts in the North Western region of Brisbane.

The May meeting of the Arana View Club is on Wednesday 4th August at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade, Keperra, 10.30am for 11am start.

Tim Mander MP and Cr Tracy Davis attend the Sorry Day Ceremony at Teralba Park Sorry Day The Sorry Day Ceremony held at Teralba Park, Everton Park is getting bigger and bigger each year – in fact, I believe it’s the largest gathering in Brisbane. This is an important annual commemoration to help raise awareness of the Stolen Generations and assist in the process of healing and reconciliation. It was encouraging to see so many schools and community groups represented.

I want to thank the Teralba Park Stolen Generation Support Group for hosting this special event and for inviting me to read the pledge.

Gambling Community Benefit Fund Congratulations to Everton’s recipients of round 108 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund!

Albany Creek Pony Club, Amparo Advocacy Inc, Help Enterprises Limited and Pine Hills Netball Club were all recently provided with funding to improve the valuable services they offer to our community.

Organisations in the Everton Electorate have now received a total of $904,836.99 from rounds 100-108 as part of this fund.

Schrinner Council has invested over $680Million on suburban services and infrastructure provided by our local contractors throughout Brisbane. We are doing our part to ensure Brisbane’s economy is healthy and ready to prosper as we exit the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, one of the projects the Schrinner Council completed, was the Beech Street Pedestrian Bridge that connected a link across Cedar Creek to the local schools and amenities. Over 30 roads were resurfaced throughout the ward as well as active travel links and the continuation of the Keperra connected footpath program. The Schrinner Council has provided support to many community groups during the COVID19 pandemic.This support has enabled our community and sporting groups to continue to operate over the past year.

Very early on we suspended large item collections across Brisbane, during the pandemic this would have put the collection crews at risk of COVID19, these diverted financial resources benefitted community groups such as the Brisbane Tramway Museum, the Girl Guides and Scouts, The Gap Football Club, Arana Contract Bridge Club, and Communify.

As we move out of COVID-19, the Schrinner Council has taken action to support local business through the recovery by suspending small business fees, turning off parking meters, increasing deep cleaning for public transport and changing procurement requirements to preference local traders, contractors and suppliers.

As we approach the end of 2020-21 financial year the

The Schrinner Council continues its commitment to support over 30 registered bush care groups in every suburb throughout the ward. These groups are funded via the Habitat Brisbane Program and it is our goal to grow and connect our natural areas to protect our rich and unique biodiversity.

I would like to thank all of our volunteers who dedicate their free time to work along our waterways through Enoggera and Kedron Brook catchments.

The financial year 2020-2021 work has continued to rehabilitate the Keperra Saddle. The acquisition of property in O’Quinn Road is part of our program to increase bushland habitat and the City’s biodiversity.

The Schrinner Council is dedicated to ensuring the Green Future Fund will continue to support our Green Suburbs Program.

2021/22 State Education Budget This year’s state budget continues to deliver on the strong record of investing education Ferny Grove constituents have come to expect.

All of our state schools will share in the $9.76 million announce in the budget with a range of classroom renovations and repairs at the top of the list.

Mitchelton Special School comes in for special attention with the provision of new, much-needed specialty classrooms and time out areas. Early planning for the new building is now well underway with final plans expected later this year. This is something the Mitchie Special School Parents and Citizens have been crying out for and something I am proud to deliver on.

Round 108, Gambling Community Benefit Fund Congratulations to Grovely State School P&C who are one of three Ferny Grove electorate not-for-profits who have shared in over $75,000 in Round 108 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

Grovely State School will put the $35,000 they have received in this grant round to replace their aging school playground.

The Fund is offered to registered not-for-profits five times per year. For more information, please call my office on 3535 7100.

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) construction to commence in July The long-awaited Ferny Grove TOD will use the footprint of the existing Ferny Grove Railway Station carpark to construct

the multi-level carpark as well as new retail, dining spaces cinemas, and even a new day-care centre.

Construction will commence in late July and will inject around $140 million into our local economy and will boost local employment by more than 1,400 full time jobs. Over 700 of those jobs will be during the build with over 700 extra ongoing jobs in the precinct once the build is complete.

It is important to note that around 230 car spaces will be unavailable during the multi-level carpark build – which is expected to take around 13 months. Once complete, commuter parking at the station will increase by more than 40%.

Hills Chamber of Commerce Big Breakfast The Hills Chamber of Commerce is back to hosting its annual Big Breakfast charity fundraiser after last year’s COVIDenforced hiatus. This is a great opportunity to network with other business and community leaders while raising some much-needed funds for worthy organisations. Queensland Day Sponsorships Each year on 6 June, communities across the State celebrate Queensland Day – the day Queensland officially separated from New South Wales in 1859.

Grants of up to $15,000 (exclusive of GST) are on offer to not-for-profit, non-commercial associations, local governments and school P&Cs that are running initiatives to promote social, cultural and economic benefits to the community, encourage public participation and showcase our great State.

Each year I have the privilege of hosting school leaders at Queensland Parliament for a BBQ and tour. There were some highly focused future leaders in this first group from last month. I look forward to hosting the rest of our schools in the coming months.
