Brookside’s Sweet Secret

Brookside Shopping Centre’s rooftop is a-buzz with excitement with the harvest of the first pot of honey from its resident bee hives taking place last month.

With bees playing a critical role in preserving ecological balance, along with acting as an integral part of the wider ecosystem, the team at Brookside were keen to introduce the bee hives to the area. Through pollination, bees have an impact of many parts of the environment, but particularly on the growth of crops, flowers, and plants. Not only is it helping to strengthen the bee population, but is assisting to pollinate suburban gardens around the shopping centre’s trade area. The beehives are managed by the centre’s very own Brook News Nextra Newsagent, Mr Stephen Bird. Brookside’s Centre Manager, Mr Shaw said that with Stephen’s support and guidance, they were able to proceed with the environmental initiative with confidence. ‘The hives were installed earlier last year and produced their first crop of honey last month. The rooftop was the chosen location for the bees to call home, as it is otherwise unused, and ensures there is no risk to customers,’ Mr Shaw said. Mr Shaw continued on to reveal that Brookside wanted to contribute to the wonderful green spaces that surround the shopping centre, and that the bees will play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and keeping the area in bloom. With local customers keen to pay a premium for the pleasure of being the first to taste Brookside’s honey, the first pot of honey was auctioned off. Proceeds from the auction were donated to the Youngcare - a charity fighting for freedom, dignity and choice for young people with high physical support needs to

Pots are available for purchase from Brook News Nextra Newsagent in Brookside Shopping Centre. The Brookside beehives are part of a broader sustainability strategy for Retail First, who manage a portfolio of 20 shopping centres in South East Queensland. Brookside Shopping Centre is jointly owned by YFG Shopping Centres Pty Ltd and Trondage United Pty Ltd, and is managed by Retail First Pty Ltd.

Brent of Brent’s Kitchen is a hugely talented chef and is excited to bring his mouth-watering delights to our local bowls club for the community to enjoy. Furthermore, the function area and Brent’s Kitchen is also available for hire for social functions so if you have an event occurring in 2022, give the club a call on 3855 2725 for more information. Please note, if the hall area has been booked for a function, Brent’s Friday and Saturday evenings meals may not be available at those times. In 2022, it is hoped that the line dancing group will recommence at the club on Friday mornings. The sound of the dancers boots hitting the floorboards is always music to our ears. In addition, the 8 Ball clubs will be at the club on a Tuesday and Wednesday evening playing their club competitions with social 8 Ball on Friday evenings starting at 6pm. On the 2nd Sunday of each month the club will be open from noon until 4pm, so consider coming down to the club for a barefoot bowls game or two. Also, on the second Sunday of each month, some individual musicians come and jam, playing The Shadows music. All around the world there are musicians who pay tribute to Cliff Richard and his band, The Shadows, and Gaythorne Bowls Club is fortunate enough to have this music played in its club house. What a great, relaxing, backdrop to your barefoot bowls game. Gaythorne Bowls Club can be found at 18 Prospect Road, Gaythorne. Applications now open:

Another year down and still the threat of COVID 19 is around, but at least our borders are open. Our Christmas party was enjoyed by all and we had a fantastic turn up of members. The meal prepared by the two chefs at Meals on Wheels, Manuel and Jason was a complete hit followed by Plum Pudding and Pavlova. Our long time Hostess, Marie Stibbe, gave in her resignation at the last committee meeting after 18 years in the position. Marie plans to take it easy for a while but will still remain a member of the club. The club will be returning on the 24th January and we hope to see all our old members and welcome some new ones. Celebrating 30 Years of Success

Nobody imagined that thirty years after conception, The Hills Echo (The Everton Echo’s sibling) would still retain its popularity as a community newsmagazine in The Hills District and surrounds.

It all began in January 1992 when the very first Hills Echo edition rolled off the printing presses in Warwick and bussed its way to Ferny Hills. Those were the days of light tables, wax guns, photocopiers to increase/reduce logos and layout sheets. Yes, it was typeset on a computer, but ads were made up individually - printed out and then pasted into the blank boxes left vacant on the typeset page. It was hot work, bent over the light table wielding the hot wax gun in the middle of a Brisbane summer! Full colour was only a dream as it involved specialised film to be made by a graphics company which incurred added production costs. Instead, spot colour was available and the first edition boasted two spot colours - red and yellow. Each spot colour required a clear acetate overlay over the layout sheet and precise, fiddly placement to ensure the “colour” stayed within the black lines beneath. That light table was so very important! The Hills Echo commenced at the beginning of desktop publishing when computers replaced hot metal type. But the predecessor of The Hills Echo started in a more primitive fashion. The Advisor was the first community publication in the Hills District. With local historian Melva Welch as its Editor and chief organiser, The Advisor was produced by the two local Progress Associations - The Arana Hills Progress Association and The Ferny Hills Progress Association. All work was voluntary from the writing of articles, sale of advertising, printing and distribution. The final product was a collection of stories and advertising printed on different sized and coloured paper and held together by a staple in one corner. It was printed on a spirit print press where the handle was turned for each page of copy. Volunteers assembled once a month to print, collate and staple The Advisor all ready for distribution. Further volunteers would collect their copies and distribute their allotted area. Whenever newcomers settled in The Hills District they would be visited by a greeter who would welcome them to the local area, answer any questions and leave them a Welcome Pack which always included the latest copy of The Advisor. But all good things come to an end eventually. Volunteers became scarce and more and more people were discovering The Hills District as a great place to live. The President of the Arana Hills Progress Association, Bruce Smith sought the assistance of a local publications company, R.P.K. Publications, who agreed to typeset The Advisor and print it professionally. The Advisor changed its format to an A4 magazine with spot colour and centre staples. The Progress Associations were still in control of the writing of articles and sale of advertising. This arrangement continued for some time until once again, the scarcity of volunteers saw The Advisor run at a loss and its final edition was printed and distributed in December 1991. Roger and Lyn Fryer, owners of R.P.K. Publications, recognised the benefits of a local community newsmagazine and saw the potential for further growth and success. While on a family holiday over that Christmas period, they planned, costed and devised schedules which saw the birth of The Hills Echo. The January 1992 first edition of The Hills Echo was 24 pages in A4 size, printed on 40 gram newsprint. The same format as The Advisor but with a new masthead and layout. The print run was 3,500 which covered the whole of The Hills District plus Ferny Grove. The sale of advertising supported the cost of production and the distribution was done professionally into letterboxes and businesses. Thirty years later, The Hills Echo print run is now 14,500 copies, Page 8 - January 2022, The Everton Echo

The first edition of The Hills Echo - January 1992 covering an almost identical area and is now owned by Katie Maclean of MAC Group Publications Pty Ltd - a local independent publisher. The paper still retains a very local flavour and has continued to conquer many local hearts within the Hills District and surrounding suburbs. Furthermore, to keep up to the times, The Hills Echo is now a multi media platform, comprising print and digital media including a popular website (www.echo-news. com.au), social media, and enewsletter. In addition, she now also has three sibling publications - The Everton Echo, The Eatons Echo and Acreage Living lifestyle magazine. Back issues of The Hills Echo can be found in the Arana Hills Library and the State Library. They provide a walk through the history of The Hills District, showcasing developments, politicians and achievements of many talented citizens. It is the only local newsmagazine now servicing this community and its popularity continues to grow with constant contributions from local groups, loyal advertisers and readers. THANK YOU to our wonderful local community for embracing and supporting our much-loved Hills Echo. From local businesses who advertise with us, to local residents who send in their stories, to our loyal readers, who continue to pick up the paper and support us each month! Stay tuned as we have so much planned for the next year - after all we aren’t just surviving - we are thriving! Happy 30th birthday Hills Echo!

Decades Of Locals Caring For Locals

Albany Creek resident Karen and Ferny Hills resident Ellen and have both worked at North West Private Hospital for decades and say it’s the caring local community that keeps them there.

‘It’s the sense of family… it’s a tight knit community and we look after each other. I have patients coming back and looking out for me and it’s just lovely having that connection,’ said Karen – who worked in a variety of roles over her past 30 years at the hospital – from surgical ward nurse to theatres, and for the past seven years as Perioperative Service Manager, where her responsibilities include overseeing theatre, day surgery and more. Karen said the hospital still has that ‘small hospital’ caring feel, despite having undergone a $55 million upgrade recently and now being licensed for 150 beds. ‘We do a lot more surgical specialties here at North West Private than ever before, yet I think you get really personalised care here as people are recognised as individuals - not just a number.’ Ellen has worked as the hospital’s Director of Clinical Services for 15 years. Before that, she worked for 10 years in various other roles, always valuing the connectedness between team members. ‘The size of our hospital allows us to have a flat management structure and my clinical managers are very hands-on , allowing me to keep in touch with the day-to-day operations of the hospital.

www.echo-news.com.au

North West Private Hospitals’ Ellen and Karen ‘This helps us provide patient-centred care here at North West.’ The Everton Park private hospital has had several operators during Ellen’s time. Ellen believes that Ramsay Health Care – Australia’s largest private hospital operator – which took over in 2005, is the most supportive and inclusive. Ellen reflects on having met Ramsay Health Care’s founder Paul Ramsay before his passing in 2014. His passion, company’s ethos, has always inspired her. ‘He always used to say over and over how we’ve got to care for our people – and that’s now known as ‘The Ramsay Way’ – we’re people caring for people.’

It’s in the Bag

Dickson & Ryan Candidates Where Are You?

The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce Inc. will be holding a ‘Meet the Candidates’ Forum at their breakfast meeting in the new year.

Some of the bags that were packed.

The students in the Montessori Adolescent Program at Mitchelton State High School have been involved in a very worthwhile community project – supporting Share the Dignity charity.

This organisation aims to address the problem of period poverty for women and girls at risk, fleeing domestic violence or living below the poverty line, to help them to meet their personal hygiene needs. During the festive season, the charity aimed to collect and distribute period products and essential toiletries (and small non-food treats) packed into handbags. Mitchelton State High School were thrilled to be able to support their ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign and Montessori students gathered and sorted donations of period products, soap, shampoo, toothpaste etc along with pre-loved and new handbags. They organised the donations received into boxes labelled ‘Essential Items’ and ‘Extras’ to ensure that each bag was packed appropriately. Each Monday afternoon saw them enthusiastically packing the handbags to be delivered to women’s refuges, hospitals and directly to homeless and at-risk girls and women. Students appealed to families and staff for donations from the beginning of the school term. Along with these generous donations, they received money from amazing fundraising from other school departments, (warm thanks to Jo Smith from SEP, Maddy Smith and Chen Ji from the International school) which permitted them to purchase even more bags and products and allowed including little extras like sunscreen, lip balm, fold up tote bags, moisturiser and hair ties. These efforts, along with all the kind donations, resulted in a total of 45 bags to this very worthwhile campaign. Three bags were specifically packed for Mums and Bubs and 25 bags were aimed at teenage girls. Many of the students paid extra special attention when selecting from the donation boxes to choose items that other teenagers, doing it tough, would appreciate. This activity generated many important conversations regarding poverty awareness in general, especially homelessness and the importance of volunteering in our community. Students discussed the positive impact that even small endeavours can have. There were conversations about the increased hardship that Covid-19 and the lockdowns would have caused for the people who would receive the bags. Many comments were heard hoping the people receiving the bags would feel cared for and seen despite the many challenges they were facing. Our students and staff benefited from these positive side effects of contributing to the larger community. Students hope to make this a yearly enterprise in the Montessori Adolescent Program at Mitchelton State High School as part of our efforts to contribute to the general community. Page 12 - January 2022, The Everton Echo

They are working with an approximate timetable that the election will be no later than May 2022, meaning the Forum would most likely be held on March 22, 2022, or a date (to be confirmed) in April 2022. The Chamber are inviting all known candidates for both the Dickson and Ryan electorates to take part. The ‘Meet the Candidates’ forum is an opportunity for chamber members and the wider community to question and hear the responses of candidates standing for election. They aim for a friendly and cooperative atmosphere in which the community can hear political discussion free of overly enthusiastic or disruptive attendees. As always, an experienced chairperson will be present to ensure that a balanced, cordial arena will provide all candidates with the opportunity to explain why they are offering themselves as candidates. The Chamber are conscious that many things can change in the months leading up to the election, however if you intend to nominate for either electorate and wish to take part, they would be grateful if you could forward your best contact details as well as your intention in principle via return email to Committee Chair, Mr Brian Battersby by mobile on 0418 878 508 or by email advocacy@hillschamber.org.au MEET THE CANDIDATES FORUM: Date: Tuesday, Breakfast Meeting, date to be determined. Time: 6:45 am sharp - 9am. Location: Arana Leagues Club, 247 Dawson Parade, Keperra. Please note that this event will be subject to COVID-19 status at the time. All attendees must register their details and pay an entry ticket fee. No Walk-ins will be permitted. Bookings via the events page at www.hillschamber.org.au/events

Community Choir Entertains Regis

During November, the Serenata Singers were invited to sing at two Regis Aged Care facilities, namely The Gap and Ferny Grove.

On both occasions, an appreciative audience enjoyed the varied repertoire of the Singers and were observed singing along during a number of items, especially the Sing-a-Long with old favourites that are very familiar to an older set. The Singers needed to be early as Regis is very cautious about inviting outsiders in, as a means of protecting their residents in these times of pandemic. No matter, they were able to entertain themselves as warm-up for the main event. In more recent concerts, the musical directors have encouraged members to present solos and accompanied acts. They have had some willing members and others who had to be encouraged! However, all have been appreciated by audiences and choir. In Regis The Gap, the additional program acts included a cappella ballad and a trio of an old Scottish folk songs, while at Regis Ferny Grove, the residents were treated to ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘The Blue Danube’ and the introduction of ‘Fiddler on the

The residents joined the choir in classics such as ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ and ‘I Belong to Glasgow.’ If you would like to join the Serenata Singers, they would love your company. Home Computer Tutoring Leads To Confident Learning

Brisbane Seniors Online is a not-for-profit community group that has been helping seniors and over 50’s with computers, emerging technology and the internet in the Greater Brisbane area for 20 years. Assistance is provided by volunteer unpaid mentors who provide tutoring in the learner’s own home, on their own device and a pace that suits the learner. New learners as well as volunteer mentors are sought in most areas of the Brisbane Seniors Online coverage area. Office volunteers are also sought to help run the central office at Woolloongabba. Brisbane Seniors Online teaches Windows, Apple, Android and smart phones. Volunteer mentors joining BSOL are offered a formal induction and ongoing support through the Mentor Support group. Upskilling and training of mentors occurs from time to time. Volunteer mentoring can be a rewarding experience and assists mentors to improve their existing knowledge and skills. Learners applying to join BSOL can indicate their current experience and knowledge, the devices and operating systems they use and what they would like to learn. The learner is then matched to a suitable mentor who can assist them in home tutoring. Learners, as a guide, receive 12 hours of home lessons and then ongoing support for the balance of their membership year. Whilst computer classes have benefit, home tutoring on a one-on-one basis on your own device is more

conducive to quicker and more confident learning. During the coronavirus crisis, there has been a proliferation of scams by opportunistic fraudsters using email, text messages and phone calls. Many computer and internet users have had their devices infected with malware and viruses. Brisbane Seniors Online can help learners identify how to recognise and avoid scams and make their devices safe and secure.   An important aspect of security is protecting passwords and using multi-factor authentication to make access more secure. It is also important to have a system in place so that when a user passes away, family or trusted friends will be able to access websites, social media, email and important private information. Whilst learners are sought, volunteer mentors who have the necessary skills and able to relate to seniors are also required in most of the Greater Brisbane area. Mentors join at no cost. All home tutoring is carried out within the coronavirus safety plan guidelines. Learners pay a one-off joining fee of $20 and $45 for a year. Brisbane Seniors Online would like to acknowledge funding and support from Jim Sullivan MP, Member for Stafford that has been provided to Brisbane Seniors Online. Age is no barrier, so pop along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around their beautiful garden. Members meet on Sunday afternoons during the summer months from 3.30pm - 5pm. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find them at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook, or phone 0407 582 980 for information.

After closing the workshop in December members were busy cleaning and repairing the equipment ready for the new year opening. The Club is planning to go on several field trips in the new year to fossick for various material. Three of our regular trips are to Casino for Labradorite, Chinchilla for Petrified Wood and Cloyna/Windera for agate and Jasper, plus we hope to add more trips as the year progressives. These trips are generally done in the cooler months when it is not too hot for digging. These three regular trips are generally weekend trips because of the distance we need to travel. As the year progresses, we will have more details about other trips we will embark on throughout the year. Other than fossicking trips we sometimes travel as a group to Gem Shows which are held by other Clubs in close proximity to Brisbane. Club Gem Shows planned for next year are to be held at Wondai, Casino and Caboolture. These Gem Shows are a great source of buying lapidary material for use by members. Our fresh new look welcomes new members who may wish to join our Club. You can come along any Thursday morning between 9 am and 12 midday or Saturday afternoon from 1 pm to 3 pm. to have a look around and see if you would like to join our Club. We are hoping that conditions for organising field trips to collect cutting materials will improve in 2022.

Top Tech Tips For Our Seniors

Connectedness enhances older Australians’ wellbeing and has a positive effect on their physical and mental health.

Yet while Australians aged 65 and over are willing to learn and add new digital skills that enable them to live a better life, they also recognise that new technologies can help facilitate this. Research shows that 44 per cent of people aged over 65 years experience social exclusion, which is twice the rate of exclusion for other age groups. Moreover, at least 10 per cent of senior Australians suffer from loneliness or social isolation, a number that has failed to drop over the last two decades. Shaping Connections is a research program co-created by RMIT University’s School of Economics, Finance and Marketing, and the University of Third Age (U3A). The program was set up to better understand how technology use supports seniors’ connectedness and enhances social inclusion and participation. The group’s chief investigator, Dr Torgeir Aleti, says that while the project is ongoing, findings so far indicate that seniors recognise that new technologies can help them develop supportive and rewarding relationships with their families, there are barriers around the perceived risks of using the internet, smartphones, email and social media. Unsurprisingly, these typically revolve around safety; however, the problem is compounded by what many seniors see as a lack of volunteers to help them cross the digital divide. The results also showed that seniors who went looking for advice often faced serious obstacles, with many noting their own families often displayed a ‘can’t be bothered explaining’ attitude.

Follow-up interviews with older Australians revealed that explaining new apps and constantly evolving technologies to someone who isn’t a digital native can carry a lot of emotional tension, Dr Aleti explained. Dr Aleti conveyed that while these hurdles are not easily overcome, there are other ways you can help your older friends and relatives gain confidence in using digital technologies. Seniors benefitted from collective computer classes, such as those held at the University of the Third Age, seniors’ computer clubs and local libraries. Surprisingly, YouTube also turned out to be one of seniors’ biggest allies for learning new digital skills as it allowed them to search for content and watch at their own pace as many times as needed, he says. Helpful tips from BE Connected: 1. Choose a strong password that only you will know. 2. Keep your antivirus software up to date. 3. Use secure Wi-Fi networks and avoid using public Wi-Fi for banking or credit card transactions. 4. Think twice before sharing on social media and be sure to keep your personal information private. 5. Make secure payments online, look for the padlock symbol and ‘https://’ in the website’s address bar. THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

The tower crane at the construction site of the Ferny Grove TOD is much larger than any seen in our community in many years.

Ferny Grove TOD construction update I have been receiving great numbers of positive enquires regarding the construction of the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at the Ferny Grove Railway Station. I can report the project is on schedule and proceeding well. Initial excavation work is now complete, with construction of the carpark now underway. Once complete, the TOD will increase commuter car parking at the station by more than 43% and will provide hundreds of much needed local jobs. The multi-level carpark, which is under construction at present, should be completed around Christmas 2022 – before construction moves on to the next stage. I am informed most of the units have now been sold – with the majority of interest coming from locals who wish to stay in the area while changing their lifestyle to incorporate the convenience the TOD will offer. New citizens The last couple of years have been very difficult for everyone, but for residents seeking to become citizens there have been more hurdles than usual. I would like to wish everyone who is planning to become a new citizen this Australia Day all the best! Well done on your perseverance. School Watch Empty schools can become targets for unlawful entry, arson, stealing, graffiti and property damage, especially during school holiday periods. This comes at a cost to the whole community and not just the financial cost of repairs. Over the past three years the Palaszczuk Government has invested over $50 million in our local schools to improve facilities. Please help to keep our schools safe over the new year period by reporting suspicious activities. Look, Listen, Report. Call School Watch on 13 17 88. January Jobs for the Garden An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

Happy New Year! At present the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club is still in recess for the holiday season. All being well, the first 2022 meeting will take place at the Enoggera Memorial Hall on Thursday, 3rd February. Debbie Aitcheson, the guest speaker that day, will talk about Medicine from the Garden. Debbie and her husband have a property at Minden called ‘The Chilli Patch’ where herbs and by-products are grown to sell, so it will be interesting to learn what can be grown at home to enhance our well-being. January is a busy time for gardeners. Have you noticed bright orange delicate looking insects hovering above the lawn? That’s a sign of the presence of lawn grubs in which this insect lays its eggs. Don’t delay in treating your lawn if you want to avoid ugly brown patches. Rose bushes need attention this month. If you give them some plant food and a light prune to remove spent blooms and any diseased or dead material, you’ll be rewarded with an autumn flush of choice roses. Fruiting trees require nutrients and a check to control insect attack. Any

fruit that has fallen to the ground should be picked up and put in the garbage bin. Tip prune any young shrubs to make them develop into the desired shape. Some of the cuttings could be used for propagation. This month the warm humid weather makes mature parsley plants rot off at the base, so be ready to plant a new supply. Ideally, every six months parsley plants should be replaced. The December meeting was enjoyable. The club patron, Margaret Morrow, presented the club with another perpetual trophy, a tray, because there wasn’t any space for more inscriptions after 57 years. After carol singing and other entertainment everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. There are vacancies for new members and visitors are most welcome. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. For more information please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

Rotary Festive Fundraisers Are A Huge Success

Aspley Rotarians at the Carols at their Sausage Sizzle Stall

December has been a very busy and successful month for local not-for-profit club, Aspley Rotary.

The club has made a tremendous difference to some of the less fortunate families within our community by donating $3,000 to Aspley Care. This money assisted them to compile Christmas Hampers that were distributed to some of the families doing it tough within the region before Christmas. Moreover, the club held a free Christmas Carols Community Event in conjunction with the Aspley Hornets that raised a mammoth $600 through gold coin donations which will be presented to Youngcare at their meeting on Thursday 13th January 2022. And to top off all the hard work, the Aspley Rotary Club also raised $11,793 through their annual Christmas Trailer Raffle which will be put to good use supporting charities in the local community. Congratulations to Maria Gilbuena of Fitzgibbon who held the winning ticket! The second prize ticket holder was Debbie Dewberry of Banksia Beach. The club also carried out their ‘Christmas Wrapping’ services at Harvey Norman Aspley and raised $1,729 through gold coin donations which will be presented to Hummingbird House at the January Meeting. Aspley Rotary would like to thank the community for their support of the above events. Maria, winner of the Christmas Trailer Raffle

A Very Special Graduating Class

On the 19th December 2021 Mitchelton State High School’s Year 12 students gathered for a very last time in the Performing Arts Centre to celebrate the successful completion of their high school years: Graduation of the class of 2021!

After six years of high school, their efforts, determination and hard work have made them a cohort of exceptional resilience, flexibility and commitment, always embracing the school’s vision of Engaging Minds and Connecting Hearts. Mitchelton State High School’s Principal, John Searle, summarised their journey to success in his address. ‘I think the real answer being why these Year 12’s are so special lies in the well-known proverb - It takes a village to raise a child,’ said Mr Searle. Mr Searle emphasised the important role parents and families play in educating well-rounded and resilient young people. He also highlighted the significant contributions of teachers, school staff and the whole Mitchelton State High School community that provided all students with the skills and knowledge ‘that will hold you in good stead whatever the future brings.’ A very special acknowledgment was given to the Year 12 Year Level Coordinator, Mrs Karen van Raders, who has accompanied these students over a period of five years. In her address, Mrs van Raders looked back over the years where they were sharing laughter as well as tears, successes as well as set-backs, times of joy and celebrations as well as times of building resilience and strengths. Mrs van Raders described her work and role with the Year 12s as ‘one of the best adventures I have had in my life. Something I will never forget and for which I will treasure always.’ She thanked her cohort for inspiring her to ‘continue her learning to be a better person, teacher and leader’. The Mitchelton State High Graduates cutting the cake School community wishes the class of 2021 well in all of their future endeavours and pursuits. It was a pleasure being able to see them grow into beautiful young adults and we hope that their resilience, hard working mindset, care and infinite abilities will serve them well throughout their lives.

Kedron Brook Bikeway after December rains

You only need to take a walk or ride along the Kedron Brook Bikeway to see the impact of the wet weather we’ve been experiencing over the past few weeks. Brisbane received over 250mm of rainfall in November, and with a La Nina weather pattern expected this summer by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), there’s likely to be more rain on the way. BOM’s Head of Operational Climate Services, Dr Andrew Watkins, predicts with La Nina on the cards for the second year in a row, we should expect wetter than average conditions. ‘Last year’s La Nina was weak to moderate and it gave us average to above average rainfall….this summer...the outlook is favouring wetter than average conditions,’ said Dr Watkins. ‘The difference this time is that any rain that falls will fall upon a wet landscape. We have full rivers, we have full dams, we have wet soils, so the risk of flooding is higher this year than last year.’

December marked a milestone for the celebrated sport of Basketball. In December of 1891, James Naismith, a Canadian PE teacher invented the game of basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts to keep his students active during the winter. In fact, the nets we now use in the game actually evolved from peaches, or rather the baskets used to collect peaches! www.echo-news.com.au

Community Sport – Why Play It? By Georgia Wright

As a sport-lover and a writer for Echo News, I thought to myself, why not fuse my enjoyment for both hobbies together for this month’s article? For as long as I can remember, sport has always been a big part of my life. From carving up the dance floor as a child, to finding my strength at Tae Kwon Do, to calling myself an Arana Hills Netball Club player, I have never gone a period of time without sport—and I don’t plan to, either! According to research, children who dabble in sports are eight times more likely to grow up to be healthy, productive adults with stronger leadership and communication skills. Even the academic performance and mental health of young ones are evidenced to improve, along with their social abilities. The countless benefits of participating in regular physical activity are known far and wide by all. However, the bottom line is—kids need exercise. And lucky for all the rising pocket rockets in our community, our region has a marvellous array of sporting clubs on offer.

www.echo-news.com.au

With 2021 finally coming to a close, another year of opportunities and open doors lies ahead of us. For the youth in our district, the New Year Resolution of ‘getting fitter, happier and healthier’ can easily be made into a reality. Dozens of signon days and try-outs are right around the corner, so make sure to take note of some of these essential dates in our feature. Personally, I’ll be forever glad that I started up sport from a young age, and even gladder that I found my love for netball. Some of my highest highs have been felt on the netball court, and over the years it really brought me out of my shell. So, community sport – that’s why your child should play it.
