A Cart Full of Kindness

Amid the doom and gloom surrounding the rise in the cost of living, it can be hard to keep a positive mindset. But thankfully, inspiring initiatives from within our community have popped up such as ‘The Kindness Cart.’

The Kindness Cart is a community pantry whereby nonperishable goods have been donated by local businesses and community members for ANYONE in need. Located at The Daily Fix Espresso, 609 Stafford Road, Stafford, locals doing it tough are welcome to take as much or as little from the pantry as they need at no charge. Items within the cart may include; food items, toiletries, pet food and other necessities. Last month, Energex popped into the store to present a $1000 donation to the Kindness Cart community pantry. This money will go directly towards providing food and non-perishables to people in need in the local community.

Homestyle Meals, Delivered With Heart

For over five decades, a remarkable service to our neighbours has been quietly shaping our community. Bringing more than just food to the table, this local not-for-profit meal delivery service has been serving up a blend of warmth, nourishment, and care to households across our area. In March of this year, this beloved institution underwent a rejuvenating transformation, revealing its new identity: Caring Cuisine.

Don't let the new name fool you – the spirit remains unwavering. Caring Cuisine is the same community-driven organisation that has touched the lives of thousands over the years, bringing forth over 2 million meals of comfort and sustenance to date. In the core of their mission lies a combination of heartfelt people, homestyle culinary delights, and a personalised touch that has been their signature since day one.

Caring Cuisine extends compassionate care to each household it reaches. At the heart of this endeavour is the volunteers – the lifeblood of Caring Cuisine’s operation. Beyond simply delivering meals, these volunteers bring smiles that warm hearts, lend an attentive ear to stories, and season each interaction with laughter. For numerous members of our community, these volunteers may very well be their sole social contact in a day – an interaction that holds immeasurable value. And for families, it's a beacon of reassurance that their loved ones are being looked after.

The concept of 'locals supporting locals' is a philosophy close to Caring Cuisine’s heart. Their doors are always open to those eager to make a difference. Whether from their Mitchelton or St Lucia branches, or at one of their hubs elsewhere throughout Brisbane, Caring Cuisine eagerly welcomes new volunteers into their fold. It's an invitation to play a pivotal role in supporting our elderly and other vulnerable community members to continue to enjoy home life while receiving the essential nourishment they deserve.

If you feel the calling to be a part of this important movement, consider stepping forward. Reach out to Caring Cuisine’s dedicated volunteer coordinator, Marie, at 0422 020 747. Or to learn more about the various roles available, visit www. caringcuisine.org.au/volunteer. There are several volunteering opportunities that each hold the potential to touch lives, create connections, and foster a stronger, more compassionate community.

Caring Cuisine’s legacy isn’t confined to its past - an ongoing narrative of compassion and care continues to unfold, coupled with a commitment to meet modern community expectations, and genuinely care about the clients they serve.

Charity Golf Day Raises $17,200 to Support Bereaved Families

Children in heaven ensured a charity golf day at Keperra Golf Club last month was a ‘hole in one’ success for a Queensland support group that parents and families hope they never need. The event took place in support of The Compassionate Friends Queensland (TCFQ) - a dedicated charity to the support, care and comfort of parents, siblings and grandparents following the death of a child from any cause at any age. The group offers a haven of understanding, care, and comfort during times of profound grief.

Hosted in partnership with sponsor Rhino Finance, the golf day that showcased a heartwarming display of community solidarity, raised an impressive $17,200 for the cause. The golf day drew substantial support from both the community and sporting heroes. Queensland State of Origin legends Scott Sattler, David Shillington, and Greg Conescu lent their star power to the cause. Sattler's swings added to the excitement on the greens, while Conescu and Shillington engaged in a spirited question-and-answer session during the lunch break.

Peter and Erin Hobson's personal connection to TCFQ underscores the group's profound impact. The couple, who lost their youngest son Brendan in a motorcycle accident overseas at the age of 19 in 2016, have not only benefited from TCFQ's services but have also become dedicated volunteers. Peter emphasized the significance of finding support from others who have walked a similar path, stating, ‘The support and friendship of other bereaved parents helped us to find hope and strength after Brendan died.’

Peter, who is also President of TCFQ, expressed his gratitude

for the overwhelming success of the event. ‘The money raised is used by TCFQ to provide support services to bereaved parents, including a range of seminars and interactive workshops,’ he said. These initiatives offer a lifeline to parents navigating the challenging journey of healing after the loss of a child.

TCFQ, which began its mission in 1985, has since assisted over 3000 parents and boasts nearly 400 active members. The group's regular meetings provide a safe haven for bereaved families to find solace, understanding, and a listening ear. For those seeking more information about TCFQ and its support services for bereaved families in Queensland, visit their website at www.compassionatefriendsqld.org.au

The charity golf day's triumph stands as a testament to the power of community, compassion, and unity in the face of heartache.

Charlie Cup Champions

Sponsorship is an asset to any club as it showcases the sponsor and assists the club in many ways.

On Sunday 23rd July, the Newmarket Bocce Club held the Charlie Parrella Cup. Sponsor Charlie Parrella is a long time member of the club and even brought along his grandson Michael to enjoy the day.

32 players from the Newmarket and Redlands Bocce clubs participated with eight teams of four players per team. A great day of camaraderie and fun was had, but at the end of the day there has to be a winner - even though we are all winners. Unfortunately for Redlands, Newmarket achieved 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th with Redlands in the middle with 3rd place. Congratulations is extended to everyone for a great competition.

A superb lunch was enjoyed by all, with Silva providing the first course, and resident Super Chef Gina rustling up the rest with her helpers. Add a raffle and cheer and the Charlie Parrella Cup was a successful and fun day.

Is Collagen Worth the Hype?

As an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Nutritionist, I am often asked about the health benefits of collagen supplementation. Here are the facts about collagen so you can decide whether it’s right for you.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It can be thought of as the glue that holds us together because it is the main component of connective tissues such as skin, bone, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. It is made in our bodies when the protein we eat is broken down into amino acids.

As we get older, collagen production decreases and results in reduced elasticity in our skin, evidenced by fine lines and wrinkles, as well as changes to the way our bodies move, such as reduced flexibility and range of motion in our joints. UV exposure and stress can also slow down the production of collagen in our bodies. Unfortunately, the first five years of menopause can see a 30 per cent decline in skin collagen and it continues to decline by around 2 per cent each subsequent year.

Collagen is found in the connective tissue of animals, therefore dietary sources are foods like red meat, chicken, and seafood. However, our bodies also require vitamin C, zinc and copper to make collagen, so eating foods such as citrus, dairy, legumes, wholegrains, avocado, eggs and leafy greens are beneficial to boost your collagen production. This means a having balanced diet including all the major food groups is a great way to support your body to make collagen. There’s a growing body of research into collagen supplementation which shows it can be beneficial for improving joint functionality and reducing joint pain(1). Other studies have shown hydrolysed collagen supplementation can have favourable results compared to a placebo in terms of skin hydration, elasticity, and hydration after 3 months(2). Common collagen supplements are from bovine and marine sources. Vegetarian collagen supplements may contain ingredients that support your body’s own production of collagen. The most important thing to keep in mind is that there’s no point taking collagen or other supplements if you aren’t eating a healthy balanced diet to begin with. In summary, the good news is, there’s no harm in collagen supplementation if it fits within your budget. However, it can take up to 12 weeks before you notice any changes, so don’t expect overnight results.

Enhancing Lives

Dynamic Podiatry's Dedication to a Pain-Free, Active Lifestyle

In 2005, Matt and Vicki Hayter established Dynamic Podiatry, driven by a growing need for foot and ankle care in the community.

Over the years, the clinic has expanded to include a team of three skilled podiatrists who share a common passion: helping people of all ages lead active and fulfilling lives. By combining their expertise with the latest technology, they strive to diagnose, treat, and prevent lower limb issues, all while maintaining a friendly and professional approach.

A lot has changed in the area over those 18 years, with the new development at the Ferny Grove train station, new estates in Upper Kedron and The Quarry about to be built in Keperra. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to high quality foot care with a focus on family.

These days we are sometimes seeing the children of people who were brought in as children by their parents when we first opened! We love the small part we are able to play for families across generations, to help them live active and fulfilling lifestyles. Whether it’s cutting toenails and treating corns for grandparents, helping to heal plantar fasciitis (heel pain) in 30-something -year-olds, to helping little ones with gait issues or even getting rid of those pesky verruca (plantar warts), we’re here for you.

We also incorporate the latest technological advancements, including 3D laser foot scanners, Doppler Ultrasound with PPG for blood flow assessments and the Sensor Medica Treadmill which boasts a high speed camera integrated with a pressure detecting base which can show areas of the feet which are exposed to too much force.

However, it’s still all about the personal connection. Our team prides itself on being approachable and relatable, ensuring that patients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and developing their treatment path with us. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of trust and partnership between patients and practitioners, making the journey to pain-free living much smoother.

We have enjoyed wonderful support from the community over the past 18 years, and we hope to be helping local families with their foot care needs for many more years.

If you’d like to make an appointment please call: 3351 8878 or you can book online at www.dynamicpodiatry.com.au. Dynamic Podiatry is located at 135 Ferny Way, Ferny Hills.

Award Winning Physio Delivering Innovative Healthcare to Brisbane's Northside

Husband and wife team, Sam Bhojwani and Yamini Kapoor are the proud directors of IntegratePHYSIO, an award-winning physiotherapy business that is delivering innovative healthcare solutions on Brisbane’s northside.

IntegratePHYSIO, launched in 2017, is a musculoskeletal and sports injury outpatient service with clinics at Warner, Narangba and North Lakes and 18 dedicated employees. The business is also successfully growing its mobile service, Physio on Wheels and bringing allied health care to people in their own homes. Physio on Wheels has grown by over 300 percent in the past six months by delivering high-quality care at a fraction of the cost, competing against larger participants in the NDIS allied health.

The entire IntegratePHYSIO business has grown by up to 400% in terms of revenue and staff. This growth has supported Yamini’s passion to create a focused Women’s Health Physiotherapy for her patients and team. With only a small selection of clinics offering women’s specialised services on Brisbane’s northside, many travel to the city and wait up to six months before seeing a consultant, which is also a very expensive experience. This long-awaited addition to IntegratePHYSIO provides a valuable service for women, including pelvic examinations, pre-and post-natal physiotherapy, and treatment for bladder issues and mastitis.

Yamini and Sam acknowledge their success is because of their exceptional and growing team, plus their focus on mentoring and professional development of their staff. This has allowed the expansion of their services they provide to include women’s health, hydrotherapy and exercise physiology.

IntegratePHYSIO’s team collectively has about 80 years of clinical experience and helped more than 25,000 clients. They now see 400-500 clients a week, including their community clients.

Sam and Yamini’s passion to grow a business that provides high quality customer service and care, that is evidencebased and cost-effective delivered a complete surprise for them both when not only did they win the Moreton Daily Award for Customer Service Excellence at the Moreton Bay Business & Innovation Awards in July, but they also took home the 2023 Moreton Bay Business of the Year award. “It was very unexpected, we were excited just to win the customer service category,” Sam says. “It was all a huge surprise.”

We provide the following services:

• Physiotherapy

• Women’s health physiotherapy

• Physio on Wheels

• Manual therapy

• Hydrotherapy

• Exercise physiology

• Ergonomic assessments

• Work injury management

Body Image – The Body Project

I’m sure everyone's seen something about Barbie by now. Whether you think the film’s a masterpiece or offensive, it’s hard to argue with the history the toy brand is moving itself away from; one detrimental to how we view our bodies.

It’s well established that childhood exposure to dolls reflecting thin body ideals can damage girls’ body images. Interestingly, this also affects boys, with evidence suggesting young boys and girls equally value muscularity in action figures as the preferred male body image.

Over time, the ideal body image, reflected in toys, fluctuates with society’s expectations and the fashion industry, from Malibu Barbie to today’s more inclusive options. Whether this image is healthy or not matters less than the willingness of companies to exploit it commercially. Fitspo, for example, promoting low-fat high-muscle tropes through TikTok and Instagram, ‘inspiring’ people to buy leggings and feel negative towards their bodies. Body image (thoughts, feelings and beliefs about your body) can be positive or negative, things you like or dislike. There’s no problem emphasising the positive or changing the negative – style, exercise and diet can all be healthy. However, body image can affect self-esteem, sometimes so much that beliefs about ourselves, like dissatisfaction with a body part, become so persistent they seem to be all we think about – ‘I don’t look good in this, must be because of my shape’, ‘people are looking at me, must be my acne’. Young people, especially teens, are particularly susceptible to this way of thinking.

It is more observation than pathology to think this way. Even as adults, being mindful of insecurity-targeting ads – on billboards, our phones, dolls… – which keep us thinking about how we WANT to be, rather than how we ARE, is difficult. For children, it’s even harder not to make comparisons to your own body.

Research tells us that body image concerns affect people as young as 11, and that over a short time someone experiencing this will respond, potentially developing harmful behaviours and self-criticism based on negative beliefs about themselves and how they should look. Thus, teens are at peak risk of developing harmful ways of thinking about and behaving towards their bodies. This trajectory (self-beliefs to vulnerability to developing harmful behaviours) can be addressed. Because young people are all so equally affected, they are perfectly placed to solve this problem. Getting them together and giving them the opportunity to reflect on how the media, ads and their peers are affecting them, and guiding them to support each other is an evidence-backed method of preventing body image concerns developing further.

How Can Acupuncture Help You?

Acupuncture is a versatile therapy that can provide assistance with various conditions, ranging from physical ailments to mental health concerns. Olwen Bishop is an AHPRA registered acupuncturist and founder of Zen Acupuncture.

One of the primary benefits of acupuncture is its effectiveness in managing chronic pain and musculoskeletal injuries. By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture can help alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and promote natural healing processes. Olwen enhances these effects by employing electro-acupuncture, which utilizes gentle electrical stimulation to regulate neuro-muscular patterns.

Beyond physical health, acupuncture has proven beneficial for mental well-being. It can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, stress, and other mental health conditions. Acupuncture treatments promote relaxation, reduce tension, and restore balance within the body, thereby fostering a sense of calm and emotional stability.

Olwen also focuses on addressing women's health concerns, particularly menopause and menstrual regulation. Acupuncture can help manage menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. For menstrual irregularities, acupuncture can help regulate hormonal balance and promote a healthy menstrual cycle. With Olwen's expertise and personalized approach, acupuncture becomes a powerful tool in addressing a variety of conditions. THE FERNY REPORT

Body Corporate Law Changes

The Queensland Government has introduced legislation which will significantly update the rights of bodies corporate to make all residents’ lives more liveable. The changes will, amongst others will include:

• Allow bodies corporate to make by-laws that prohibit smoking (including vapes) on common property or an outdoor area such as a balcony.

• Make clear that regularly exposing a person in another unit or on common property to second-hand smoke is an unreasonable hazard.

• Prevent bodies corporate from making by-laws blanketbanning pets in community titles schemes.

• Enhance the ability for bodies corporate to tow vehicles from common property in a timely manner.

Acting on Sunset Clauses

The Queensland Government has also taken a significant step towards strengthening protections for Queenslanders buying land ‘off the plan’ and improving liveability for the growing number of people residing in body corporate communities. There have been many reports of developers invoking a ‘sunset clause’ to terminate an ‘off the plan’ contract, allegedly in order to re-list and sell the proposed lot for a much higher price. This has left home buyers out of pocket and without a home.

The government is proposing limits on when property developers can invoke a ‘sunset clause’ to terminate ‘off the plan’ contracts for land to situations where the written consent of the buyer has been provided, the Supreme Court has issued an order or in another situation prescribed by regulation.

The ‘off the plan’ purchasing reforms will strengthen buyer protections by limiting when sunset clauses can be used to terminate ‘off the plan’ contracts for the sale of land. The Bill will also confirm that sellers, often property developers, cannot gain early access to deposits under ‘off the plan’ contracts.

Local School Construction Updates

Construction on Oakleigh State School’s Multi-Purpose Hall is well underway with pre work now underway and foundations for the hall soon to be laid.

The final plan for the Ferny Hills State School Amenities Block has now been finalised. Construction will commence in Term 4.

The major upgrade at Mitchie Special School is nearly complete with part of the new building already being used while the finishing touches to the remainder of the construction now being applied.

HOW DO YOU WANT TO MAKE OUR COMMUNITY EVEN BETTER?

An update from Cr Andrew Wines, Enoggera Ward

New courts for Downey Park Netball Association

Council committed $400,000 in partnership with Downey Park Netball Association (DPNA) to modernise facilities at their courts in Windsor, with works commencing last year. I'm proud to support the Premier Women's Sport facility in Queensland, if not Australia. This hugely successful association provides opportunity for people to participate in sports across all ages and abilities. DPNA converted courts 22-28 from grass courts into hard, lit courts, and I was delighted to join them in July to officially open the site. Many of our local sports clubs were significantly impacted by flooding, and DPNA have shown great commitment to repairing damage, while continuing to improve their facilities for our community.

Upgraded playground for Kinnen Street Park

I am proud to deliver a new playground for our community at Kinnen Street Park, Enoggera.

Works have commenced on site, and weather permitting, will be completed by the end of September 2023.

This is the second time I have upgraded this park, and the new works make the park even better.

Works will increase the size of the playground with new equipment being installed. This includes a new structure with slides and swings, soft fall under the equipment, and upgraded concrete edging.

Scan the QR code to share your feedback

I have always been committed to improving our community’s transport, drainage, and parkland. You can find out more about local projects I have delivered on my website andrewwines. com.

My focus has always been making Council serve our community, feedback ensures our community’s values are best represented by Council. I look forward to hearing your suggestions to make Enoggera Ward an even better place to live. Please contact my office to request a paper copy of the survey.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day

On 18th August, we commemorate Vietnam Veterans' Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War.

I was honoured to be invited to lay a wreath at the commemoration service at Gaythorne RSL to pay respect to all who served.

Inflation / Cost of Living

New Consumer Price Index numbers released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics have revealed Queensland recorded the biggest increases in the country last financial year for the big four cost-of-living responsibilities for state governments: Rent (QLD: 8.9% increase), Electricity (QLD: 25.4% increase), Health costs (QLD: 6.7% increase), Insurance (QLD: 17.1% increase)

Housing, electricity, health and insurance premiums are critical responsibilities of the State Government

These are the big bills Queenslanders are now paying due to the systemic service delivery failures of this Government. The Palaszczuk Government’s failure to properly...

1) Increase housing supply has driven up rents.

2) Maintain the State’s power plants like Callide has driven up power prices.

3) Plan and resource the health system over the past decade has driven up health costs.

4) Strengthen laws, created the Queensland Youth Crime Crisis which is now so out of control it’s driven insurance premiums.

Queenslanders deserve a calm and stable government that will bring their household costs down, not push them up.

An Ekkanomical Success

For first-time bidders in the Ekka’s notorious cattle auction, Arana Tender Cut Meats sure left the Brisbane show cheering. Each year, the Ekka plays host to Australia’s largest annual ‘cattle comp’, with breeders herding their best cattle for auction. The tradition first appeared in the year 1876, where just three beef breeds were on offer at the show—Durham, Devon, and Hereford. This year, 30 breeds paraded through the Ekka’s Main Area, with over 1300 of the beasts featuring in the led steer and stud beef competitions. As well, we’ve ‘herd’ that sales in excess of 15 million will be generated just from this year’s fruitful heavyweight deals! One of those sales now belongs to Arana Tender Cut Meats, a local butcher in Kmart Plaza on Patrick’s Road, in the form of four hooves. Although it was established in 2009, the butcher only changed ownership to Ross and Brooke Catanzariti last year. Hence, this was the couples’ first year bidding on a cow in the Ekka. In their case, their chosen cow also won Junior Champion.

As the new owners, the Catanzariti’s keenly await their prize-winning meat to be processed and ready to be sold to customers in coming weeks. Ross informs Echo News that their business intends to participate in the auction every year from now on. For those interested in a slice of Arana Tender Cut Meats’ Ekkanomic success, it can be purchased in store. Alternatively, the butcher offers website ordering, click & collect and delivery services across majority of Brisbane and the Moreton Bay Region. Arana Tender Cut Meats is contactable on (07) 3158 3646 or aranatendercutmeats@ gmail.com
