Environmental Protections & Lifestyle Brought into Focus in 2021/2022 Budget

Community calls in Division 9 for greater environmental protections, and investment in local lifestyle and infrastructure will be actioned this financial year, all thanks to the 2021/22 Budget.

Councillor Cath Tonks said she was thrilled to be delivering an array of practical and positive initiatives , including suggestions from local residents.

‘In response to local calls for action to prevent wildlife being hit by vehicles along Winn and Samsonvale Roads in Cashmere, we’ll install a number of fauna crossings and signage in this area worth $460,000,’ she said.

‘Residents have told me they want to see more tree plantings to offset losses associated with housing development, so we’ll start a $129,000 planting program in Kimberley Court Reserve and William Johnson Park this year.’

Local parks will receive some attention with $280,000 being allocated to build a new playground, fitness area, basketball half-court and landscaping in John Leitch Memorial Park at Albany Creek. Another $420,000 will be set aside for new pathways, a multi-court, shelter, seating and new play elements for Frank Nichols Park in Warner.

There will also be significant investments in Division 9 this year to create more sporting and recreation options that people of all ages will enjoy for generations to come.

Local roads around Brendale, Cashmere, Albany Creek and Warner will see improvements and a massive $1.02 million will be invested into rehabilitating a 600 metre stretch of Old North Road between South Pine Road and Kremzow Road.

Much like her siblings, The Hills and The Everton Echo, The Eatons Echo will celebrate the wonderful people, places, local organisations, and businesses our area has to offer.

Community is at the heart of everything we do at Echo News and we are looking forward to providing trusted content for residents. Now more than ever, it is so important to stay connected to our community and we hope that our 'local rag' can help do just that. We are honoured to offer community groups, clubs, and organisations an opportunity to showcase their monthly news, views and stories and reach potential new members. If you are a local community group or resident who would like to share a story, please get in touch. We would LOVE to hear from you!

Our newspaper is proudly independently owned. Therefore, we reflect the views of the local community in an unbiased and non-political manner. In addition, we are locals; we don't just talk about being local, we live it every day!

Recipe of the month

Slow cooker Baileys Caramilk fudge

If you've never made fudge in your slow cooker before, there are plenty of reasons to try it. Slow cooking allows the fudge to cook at a lower temperature, which means the chocolate doesn't seize, resulting in a creamy texture.

Ingredients • 30g unsalted butter, chopped • 395g can sweetened condensed milk • 600g Caramilk chocolate, broken into squares • 60ml (1/4 cup) Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur

Method: Step 1: Turn slow cooker on to Low. Arrange the butter in the base of the slow cooker and allow to melt a little (this will grease the base of the bowl).

Step 2: Add condensed milk and chocolate to the slow cooker. Cook for 20 minutes to allow the chocolate to soften.

Cook, stirring every 15 minutes, for a further hour or until smooth and evenly combined. Stir in Baileys.

Step 3: Meanwhile, line a 20cm square cake pan with baking paper, allowing paper to overhang the sides. When the fudge is ready, use a large spoon to transfer to the prepared pan.

Set aside to cool for about 30 minutes before placing in the fridge for 6 hours or until firm.

IMPROVING THE TRADITIONAL GOLF SWING Dear Editor, The Traditional Golf Swing has developed over hundreds of years. It is difficult to master. Only 3% of golfers, who are those possessing superior coordination and timing, have a handicap of 3 or less, while the average for all handicap golfers is about 20.

Of course, practice will improve one’s handicap. But, if the method of hitting the ball can be improved and adopted, the average handicap may also be lowered, and perhaps more golfers might get more fun out of their golf.

The question therefore is ‘how can this be done?’, if indeed it is possible.

This question troubled me as a ‘golf tragic’ and now-retired scientist, so during the pandemic I started to think about it. I watched videos of elite golfers, read a few so-called instruction books and used my many years of playing the game to identify the ‘essential movements’ of the elites even some with radical swings.

My initial theory was that if the EM’s could be put together in a different way, a new and more effective stroke might be developed. Initial trials of hitting plastic golf balls inside into a curtain eight metres away were unsuccessful. Finally, a new procedure emerged, which was partly successful but complex. After simplification, but retaining the EM’s, the New Golf Stroke seemed to at least provide an alternative swing warranting further trials. And it might be easier on the golfer’s back and need a lower energy input.

An update from the Albany Creek Lions Club This is the first opportunity that we have had to talk to you, the members of our community through this medium.

This year, we celebrate 45 years of serving our communities of Albany Creek and Eatons Hill and I am sure that some of you did not even know that you had a local Lions Club ready and willing to assist where needed.

We have been regularly supporting the six schools in the area, along with Estia at Albany Creek and delivering Meals on Wheels in both Albany Creek and Eatons Hill. When needed we assist, the local Chaplains along with many other requests and projects.

You may often see us doing a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings at Brendale and of course at varying times out and about selling our well known and loved Traditional Lions Cakes.

If you would like to get involved in volunteering, we would love to have you join us. We need more members to help - male or female of any age, as long as you have a desire to make a difference. If this is you please contact either our Secretary, Graeme on 0408 374 719 or President Kaye on 0477 212 242 for more information. We would warmly welcome new members to the Club.

Month Ambo Tales From The Frontline

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work as a paramedic?

Sure, you can watch the TV shows and get a taste for the role, but is that a true depiction of reality?

Government institutions are by their very nature ‘risk averse’, and so footage that might suggest their staff are anything but consummate professionals tends to be edited out, which can lead to a sanitised portrayal of modern-day ambos. The fact is, paramedics have a dark sense of humour; it’s how they cope with the often harrowing situations they face. Talking about a job and making light of what they see lessens the impact and allows them to move on to the next patient with a lighter mental load.

Therefore, it seems quite ironic that perhaps the best way to learn what it’s really like to be a paramedic is through fiction. By removing the onus of truth, and all the legal implications that entails, especially in the medical field, a fictional story can accurately portray the camaraderie, banter, and inappropriate humour that is an integral part of being a prehospital clinician. For the past five years, a local Brisbane paramedic, Harry Colfer (a pseudonym), has been doing just that, writing and publishing a series of humorous short-story eBooks entitled ‘Ambo Tales from the Frontline’. After getting great reviews from both paramedics and the public, Harry has recently released his debut novel, ‘Dead Regular’, featuring the same characters (available from his website www.harrycolfer.com, in print or ebook format). It’s a murder mystery in which the main protagonist, Jono, believes a serial killer is bumping off the regular time-wasting patients. Full of suspense, twists, confronting scenes, and lots of dark ambo humour, he seems to have hit the mark with his audience, garnering an average rating of 4.97 out of 5 on Goodreads. The story certainly appeals to Brisbane residents as the city itself functions like an additional character, with suburbs, road names, and landmarks littered throughout the text. And being a local author, Harry is offering free delivery to ‘The Eatons Echo’ readers, just click the local delivery option on his website.

So, if you’re looking forward to watching the new season of ‘Ambulance Australia’ that’s due to air later this year, perhaps you might want to check out what the job’s really like by reading some of Harry’s work.

If you are looking into playing touch football locally, look no further than the Arana Touch Football Association.

Registrations and team nominations are now open for the August to December 2021 season and the club is looking forward to welcoming new and existing members from the local community.

The season kicks off on the 25th August at West Mitchelton League Fields at the corner of Samford Road and Prospect Street at Mitchelton. All games are played on a Wednesday afternoon and take place at Mitchelton.

This friendly club accommodates players from a wide range of age groups, with divisions available in the under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 boys and girls. The Queensland Junior State Cup was held in Hervey Bay again this year on the 8th, 9th and 10th July. Arana Touch was delighted to have several teams competing in the Under 10, 12, 14, 16 boys and girls age groups, as well as the Under 18 girls teams, all of whom played extremely well. Since last years cup was cancelled, all teams were really excited to be able to go to Hervey Bay again this year.

‘Ever Upward’ For ACE Soccer

Registrations are now open for the Albany Creek Excelsior (ACE) five-a-side competition – one of the biggest and best football events in north Brisbane.

More than one thousand players sign-up each year for the spring tournament, which caters for everyone in more than 20 age groups and categories from Kindy (aged 4) to Overs (45 plus).

The ACE five-a-side has built up a reputation for being a great fun and social event, but also an ideal way to keep fit and improve ahead of the next winter season. Hundreds of players and teams return each year. In fact, many have already started to register.

This year’s competition will run from the 5th October to 1st December, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at South Pine Sports Complex – where ACE is based.

Such has been the growth of the club – and its sister club Moreton Bay United – more fields and a new clubhouse are to be built at Brendale. Work is to start this year. It will be fitting for a club which caters for everyone - from those aged four or five playing for the first time, to over 45’s who love the game and camaraderie.

ACE has won countless premierships and grand finals over the years. In recent seasons, the men’s team has become a dominant force in Football Brisbane’s Premier League.

In 2018, ACE won the Premiership; in 2019, the Premiership and Grand Fina, and this year it topped the Premier and reserves ladders.

Many players have gone on to professional and international careers including; Joey Champness, Brandon Borrello and Robbie Kruse.

It is a far cry from the day ACE was formed in 1963 as part of Albany Creek Sports Club. The first junior team was formed in 1964.

The following year, land was secured in Albany Creek. By public vote, it was named Wolter Park and remains, to this day, the footballing home of ACE. In 1974, the club fielded its first senior team, and by 1983 had 21 senior and junior sides. By 2010, more than 1000 players registered to play for ACE and that figure has grown every year since.

Now one of the biggest clubs in Brisbane, ACE always strives to live up to its name - Excelsior being a Latin word translated into English as a motto meaning ‘Ever Upward’.

Lockdown Won’t Stop State Hockey Titles

These talented girls were; Josie Burgess, Vanessa Infanti, Matilda De Silva, Poppy Lind, Isobel McKeon, Ruby Price, Leela Christie, Georgia Beal, Jordan Halliday, Madilyn Standley, Charlie Elborne, Bianca Ryan, and Celeste Ryan.

With Brisbane in the running to host the Olympics in 2032, let’s hope that we may be able to see some of our locals representing their country one day.

The lifting of Queensland lockdown restrictions at the beginning of July came in the nick of time for 18 young hockey players from two of our local clubs.

The players were attending the 2021 Under 13’s State Hockey Championships. An early morning bus ride on Sunday 4th July allowed the girls to make their first games in Gympie, whilst the boys had to hop on a flight to Townsville with fixtures pushed back to accommodate the Brisbane teams.

It is fantastic to see so many young players enjoying their chosen sport and having the opportunity to represent at a State Championship.

Runner Rob Making it Rain for Local Charity Yet another local champion, Rob Hopkinson, made waves recently, causing an overflow of support for those involved in Small Steps 4 Hannah. Living a double life as a pharmaceutical company worker and a notoriously talented Ultra Marathon Runner, Eatons Hill local Rob saw a chance to bring generosity to the table.

Every year, Rob runs marathons to support one charity that tugs on his heart. But not only does Rob run for charity, the 46-year-old often runs in marvellous costumes! All the more to put smiles on our dials. This year, his choice was Small Steps 4 Hannah—a foundation that seeks to end cycles of domestic violence and be the guiding light for those who need the confidence to act.

When asked what pushed him to fundraise for SS4H, Rob revealed, ‘Having female friends that have gone through the experience of domestic violence motivated me, but so did the loss of 4 beautiful souls. Seeing Lloyd and Sue and how they are so strong and willing to make a difference for the future was enough motivation to help them as much as I can.’

So, earlier in 2021, Rob reached out to the Small Steps 4 Hannah to ask if he could raise funds for their cause. Little did the foundation know, Rob’s idea of fundraising was to run 100km through the Blue Mountains, scaling a whopping 4,400 metre elevations along the way!

To most people, this ‘fun run’ sounds anything but fun. To Rob, however, it was all in a day’s work. After less than 16 hours, he was crossing the finish line wearing a grin the size of the Nile. Later, Rob met with Lloyd and Sue at Hannah’s place to hand over the funds he raised along the way—an incredible total of $10, 581.

A Sweet Treat for a Barking Good Cause

Who doesn’t love a cupcake, and it tastes so much sweeter when you buy one for a good cause!

With this in mind, be sure to head down to the RSPCA Cupcake Day at Boxwood Court Dog Park, Warner, on the 15th August 10am-1pm to purchase a cupcake or two.

This is the second year in a row that Warner local Renee Hague has organised the Cupcake Day that raises much needed funds for the RSPCA. Renee’s ‘fur baby’ Buddy was a rescue dog leading her to being a big advocate for the ‘Adopt Don’t Shop’ program and loves the idea of helping out animals who are in need.

‘My first dog, Buddy was a resuce dog and had an unfortunate start in life. He needed a lot of rehab and special care. This hands on and personal experience with Buddy motivated me to help other animals get the care they need and find new loving forever homes, ’ said Renee.

‘I want to help all creatures great and small be heard, grow, find new homes and get a second chance at a happy, healthy life that they deserve.’

Last year Renee managed to raise just over $500 for the RSPCA selling cupcakes, dog friendly ‘pupcakes’, brownies and cookies. This year, she has set the bar even higher and has a target of $600 to reach.

However, this year the event isn’t just limited to sweet treats.

Thanks to the support from the business community there will be a raffle taking place with some superb prizes on offer. A big thankyou goes out to local businesses; Hooray Brownies, Coffee Club Warner, Stellarossa Warner, Stone & Copper bar dining restaurant that have offered up some fabulous prizes. Furthermore, there have been some generous

last minute community donations thrown in for prizes, which include a new plush dog bed, picnic blanket and a Tupperware pac,k!

Plus everyone knows coffee and cake are a winning combo so local coffee cart Energize Espresso will be on hand to sort out all those caffiene fixes.

Every year, the RSPCA receives more than 57,000 cruelty reports around Australia and cares for more than 112,000 animals who come through its doors.

As a not for profit charity, they rely on the generosity and support of the community to give these animals a second chance at life.

So please head down and grab a cuppa and a cake to support this great cause.

Rehoming Charity saving Gorgeous Greyhounds

You may know Greyhounds as racing dogs. Athletes.

You may have seen them running around the track at breakneck speeds, muzzles covering their faces. You may not know that Greyhounds are intelligent, gentle, affectionate dogs that make wonderful companions for adults and children. They enjoy being part of a family and after a short daily walk will happily laze away the day snuggled up on a bed or lounge.

However, Greyhounds bred for racing spend most of their lives in kennels, with little socialisation or exposure to the outside world. For Greyhounds making the transition from racing life to pet life it is new and exciting, but it can also be a scary experience for them.

This is where rehoming charities like I Want A Greyhound (IWaG) Inc. are invaluable. IWaG is a Brisbane based registered not-for-profit Greyhound rehoming, education and support charity. IWaG was founded in 2018 by four Greyhound loving people with many years experience as Greyhound foster carers, adopters and volunteers for Greyhound rehoming and welfare advocacy groups.

Many racing Greyhounds have never entered a house, encountered stairs, walked on tiles or carpet, or ever seen another breed of dog. Everything is new for them from the sound of the tv, ceiling fans, sliding glass doors to washing machines etc.

All Greyhounds that enter IWaG’s rehoming programme are placed in foster homes where they are slowly introduced to pet life. Every Greyhound adapts to these changes at their own pace. Some embrace the perks of pet life quickly. Others may require a high level of support from their foster carers and IWaG’s volunteer team (The Hound Crew), and also IWaG’s training partners and vets to help them adjust.

Once their vet work is complete and they have had time to

settle into pet life and have been assessed, the Greyhounds are adopted into forever homes where they can live out the rest of their natural lives as much loved family pets.

But all this comes at a financial cost. It takes around $1000.00 to transition Greyhounds from racing life to pet life. In the short time they have been operating IWaG has rehomed over 100 Greyhounds with more in foster care and others waiting to come into IWaG’s care. IWaG’s dedicated volunteers work tirelessly and put their heart and soul into fundraising and educating the wider community about the welfare of Greyhounds to build a strong, supportive Greyhound-loving community.

Picabeen is excited to be a part of Brisbane festival in 2021.

Picabeen will be hosting free Creative Workshops for LGBTQI+ seniors and allies. It is the perfect way to find your inner creative!

Seniors from the LGBTQI+ community are invited to engage in creative workshops that lead to the inaugural Little Miss Lifetime pageant. Workshops in headwear and costume design, stories and movement, culminate in the pageant as part of Brisbane Festival’s Street Serenades, ‘At Our Place’ performance. Participation for the workshops is free but bookings are essential.

Volunteers Needed + Op Shop!

Picabeen is also calling for volunteers to help with some of their regular programs. The Ability Art Class would welcome a volunteer to run weekly activities from 10am-12pm. The Tuesday BBQ needs people who are happy to cook up a snag or butter some rolls and they also require a volunteer to collect our bread from a bakery on Saturdays. These roles only take 1-2 hours of your time, and you can bring a friend to volunteer with!

Picabeen also has an Op shop on Gilston Street in Keperra.

All the funds raised from the Op Shop go straight back into services that Picabeen runs. The Change Room is calling for more volunteers to help run the Op shop. Shifts are generally 4 hours either morning or afternoon and training is provided.

Picabeen is always thankful for the amazing contribution of our volunteers, and they can continue their services because of them!

Wildlife Pocket Now Protected from Development

A small but vital piece of Moreton Bay Region will be protected as wildlife habitat forever, thanks to the incredible generosity of a Clear Mountain couple.

Jan and Dennis have donated six hectares of bushland on their private property to be managed in perpetuity under a Voluntary Conservation Agreement (VCA). The VCA will protect this land from future development and safeguard the wildlife in the area.

The bush-loving couple have always admired this piece of land for the spectacular array of flora and fauna, which makes it an ideal habitat for native wildlife like koalas, possums, many bird species and more. Jan, a Virologist, has always been interested in nature and seeks the importance to record what’s here – just this year she has found new plant species that she had never seen before on the property.

Her husband Dennis said he’d like to thank Council for getting the ball rolling on this project for the sake of the local wildlife.

‘There are definitely koalas, and we’ve had echidnas walk past our back door,’ Dennis revealed.

‘We find it distressing when things are cleared and there’s no thought given to native species and what’s actually on the land, so we thought this would be our own little bit to help that.

‘Because of the pressure for population in this part of the world it means there’s a lot of development going on, and we’re just trying to form some kind of buffer between that and the wildlife and trees.’

Manipulation & the ‘Gaslighting Tango’

I don’t know about you, but have you ever walked away from a conversation confused after apologising for something you haven’t done, feeling awful or guilty?

This can be your Mum’s guilt-trip speech for not visiting more often, your boss teasing you: ‘Oh come on, I never said that, you’re just being too sensitive’. Or could be a co-worker: ‘Ha, didn’t you know they’ve all been talking about you?’ Even your sibling: ‘you seriously can’t find your sunnies, what’s wrong with your memory?’

It hurts. This is because it comes from either a person with some kind of authority or someone you care about, which is why it is easier to blame yourself. The term ‘Gaslighting’ means ‘a form of manipulation’ where the goal is control.

This can take shape by the form of questioning your own reality, memory or perceptions. They can do this by causing someone to distrust themselves, making someone feel intimidated and vulnerable or by preventing someone’s ability to stand up for themselves. It can be intentional and calculated or unconscious as a learned behaviour from their previous life experiences.

Some examples of Gaslighting are; Withholding affection as a way of punishing you (implying they don’t care, silent treatment) : Victimhood where they exaggerate situations to make them the victim & they can’t function without you: Aggression or personal attacks like shaming, scapegoating, criticisms, mocking you, intimidation: Trivialising how you feel to make you feel belittled, like you are overreacting: Countering is when a person questions someone’s memories, like planting a seed of doubt in your mind: guilt-tripping that convinces you to feel bad: Diverting, when they feel trapped they literally divert the focus on you & your trustworthiness :

Stereotyping when they intentionally use negative stereotypes to manipulate.

Brutal. I know right. It’s easy for an outsider to judge someone ‘falling for this’ and why don’t they just see through it and stand up for themselves? This is like living with the enemy, but you actually respect their opinion, like a form of Stockholm Syndrome or self-fulfilling prophecy. It can start off harmless, but over time makes you anxious, depressed and developing feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness. You’re defending their behaviour and not being honest to your mates to protect them (and your shame), eventually a habit of apologising for yourself or second-guessing yourself, feeling like you can’t do anything right.

So, how do you protect yourself without ‘setting them off’ and making things worse? Acknowledge its not your fault, you’ve done nothing wrong - and accept it could be happening to you (or someone you love). Start with a journal. This is evidence of the frequency, tactics that are used and importantly to validate your suspicions but - keep this is a safe space for your eyes only. There are support groups to connect with others to reinforce that you are not alone. You can see a therapist, a safe space to talk honestly about how you are feeling and discuss strategies to protect yourself. Re-learn to trust your instincts; this will help you regain a sense of self again. As hard as it is, resist the urge to argue as you are then playing their game - you won’t win. You can speak up and call out the manipulation when it happens - use respectful language and ‘I’ statements to avoid aggression. Follow these steps: 1. Acknowledge their perspective 2. Explain how the manipulation affects you and the relationship 3. Remind them of the original question/situation and correct any inaccuracies.

Yes, it is easier said than done. So, don’t get distracted by their personal attacks, try to stay focused on what it is you originally want to say – even if you have to practice in the mirror before you can do it in person. By practicing you can correct any lies because you know the facts. Remember to keep your body language neutral to show that you are not upset or getting frustrated, be cool as a cucumber. Importantly, remember that you can’t control anyone else’s opinion, even if you are right. You can’t change someone that isn’t ready to change, especially if they don’t think there is a problem. So please, have compassion and understanding for yourself.

Using your intuition to access funding Welcome to ‘Grab that Grant’, a monthly column brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall. Carolyn is the founder of the Little Project Management Company, and has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry. This month, Carolyn chats about how you can use intuition to have more success with grants.

The Grants in Australia research report estimates that there is around $80 billion given away in grant funding each year in Australia. Applying for each grant opportunity that arises is not an option. So how can you be more effective and efficient with your grant applications?

By using your intuition.

Barbara describes intuition as the ‘voice of your soul’. This is something that everyone can access.

Using your intuition can be as easy as pausing, trusting, and taking inspired action. You pause and feel into what you desire, trust the decision that you make and take the next action that you are inspired to do.

Barbara applies this to grant applications. An organisation may be presented with ten different grant opportunities.

They each have grant guidelines, so you have all the logical information you need, but this is the point where you pause.

Which grants can you imagine receiving? Which applications bring your program come to life? Those, Barbara says, are the applications you should apply for.

Trusting yourself is sometimes the hardest thing to do as we are taught to always have logical explanations for our decision making. Your ‘gut feeling’, though, is all that you need. Barbara encourages us all to give it a try.

Taking inspired action is just that. What is the one next step that comes up for you? You might feel the need to speak with a contact at the funding agency or collaborate with a partner. Action sometimes feels ‘heavy’ or ‘tiring’ but when connected with inspired, it takes on a whole new level of energy. It brings us energy.

History

From Bunya Park to Blossoming Wildlife Sanctuary

Many locals will be familiar with Kumbartcho Sanctuary and Nursery in Eatons Hill. However, did you know that the site actually used to be a wildlife sanctuary and tourist attraction called Bunya Park, which operated in North Brisbane from 1968 -1994?

We are lucky enough to have tracked down founding volunteer of the Kumbartcho Sanctuary and Nursery, Kim Pantano who has given us a wonderful account of how this beautiful Flora and Fauna haven came to fruition and was actually saved from widescale development in the 90’s.

Bunya Park The Closure This iconic Brisbane tourist attraction was set to close in late 1994 and the 25acre site was earmarked by developers to become a 56 lot housing development. This would have been a tragic loss to the wider community. Fortunately, the Pine Rivers Shire Councillor at the time, Graeme Ashworth and his wife Betty-Anne, were keen to preserve the site. Graham worked with the local community, who banded together to lobby all levels of government to have the site saved. Key members of the community who galvanised local support were Gary and Lisa Mitchell, Peter McLachlan, John and Rowan Lyndon, and Kim Pantano.

After 12 months of negotiation between the community, the developer and Council a resolution was achieved. The site would only be able to have 16 housing blocks and the remainder of the site was returned to community ownership through the Council as a designated fauna and flora reserve.

It was a wonderful win for the community as the site offered not only the opportunity to extend and enhance the Riparian rainforest along the South Pine River, but also engage the wider community into the importance of our native fauna and flora species.

Bunya Park Moving Forward When the site was returned to Council in early 1997, the rebirth of the venue began.

Whilst it was empty it had become overgrown and vandalized. The volunteers came to the site to rediscover overgrown areas and make them part of a community nature hub. In 1998, the Pine Rivers Community nursery was established to propagate local native plant species and encourage the community to plant them instead of introduced species. The nursery operates as a not for profit association and has gone from strength to strength since its inception.

The site was subsequently renamed Kumbartcho -the local indigenous word for Hoop Pine.

The 80 volunteers who are part of Kumbartcho are the back bone, which makes it the special place it is. The Council works in partnership with the volunteers to make it a hub of community-based activity, environmental education, passive and active recreation and native plant propagation.

The site is open to the public 7 days per week from dawn till dusk. The nursery and environment centre have limited opening hours.

Artie McClure

Born March 1918 | From Caboolture QLD

Artie McClure joined the war effort as a topographer due to the threat of Japanese invasion.

Artie went to Darwin immediately after the bombing as much of the Northern Territory coastline had not been adequately mapped.

After his work in the Northern Territory, Artie was sent to Papua New Guinea and then on to Borneo. In a very poignant interview, Artie recalls what it was like to see the horrors of war first hand.

Artie continues to live a simple life in Caboolture Queensland, not far from where he was born over 102 years ago.

Ken Bridges OAM

Born November 1926 | From Narrandera, QLD

Ken Bridges was born in Narrandera on the Murrumbidgee River, New South Wales in November 1926.

As a youngster he joined the Sea Scouts and this path eventually led him to becoming a Merchant Marine during WWII. Ken served on some of the more famous vessels involved in WWII, including the HMAS Shropshire and the HMAS Bataan.

After World War II, Ken was involved with the occupation of Japan followed

by Naval service in the Korean War. Ken thoroughly enjoys his time living alongside the Noosa river and visiting some of his favourite fishing holes with mates.

Pick Porcelain for the Perfect Medium An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association

At a recent monthly meeting we had an inspiring demonstration in the use of cold porcelain as a way to make our creations permanent.

Items made with fondant and other icing mediums tend to have a limited life and often people wish to keep these items as mementos. This product solves many of these issues and can be used to create flowers, figurines etc.

Maria demonstrated Nicron cold porcelain and some of the moulds to make cute figurines. At a later date we are doing a workshop with the product.

The Brisbane North Cake decorators are a branch of the Qld Cake Decorators Association and meet on the third Saturday of each month (except December) at the Arana Hills Community centre, 291 Dawson Parade Arana Hills, commencing at 1pm. We try to keep the business side of the meeting as short as possible so we can concentrate on learning new skills and refining old ones with workshops and demonstrations.

Our annual Cake Competition and Display is on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th of September at the Upper Coomera Community Centre. Our display item is progressing well and some members are busy with competition cakes for the show.

New members - experienced or new to cake decorating - are always welcome.

Prep’s from Albany Hills State School handed over a BIG cheque to Peggy and Al from ‘Save the Bilby Fund’

Prep students from Albany Hills State School were busy last term as they took part in the Easter Bilby Adventure Program in conjunction with the Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre.

The students learnt about the plight of the Bilby at school, along with studying the animal and its ecosystem. As the students learnt about how endangered this endemic animal is, the Preps decided to hold a fundraiser. A free dress day was held to raise money for the Save the Bilby Fund. This fund’s aim is to save the Bilby from extinction and to help build an insurance population of 10,000 Bilbies in Australia by 2030.

The Prep's did a terrific effort and managed to raise a massive $215.60.

On Monday 29th March, students visited the Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre to present a VERY BIG cheque to Peggy and Al from the Save the Bilby Fund with the proceeds from their fundraising. This money will support the breeding and releasing of captive bilbies to a sanctuary surrounded by a predator exclusion fence in Currawinya National Park with the aim of building a population of 400 free-living Bilbies.

The partnership between the BEEC and Albany Hills State School has been a long lasting one with teachers Lisa St John and Lisa Borgeaud-Moo, bringing Preps to learn about endangered species for many years. Bunyaville EEC’s Principal Debbie Ledger explained that their educational environmental programs are fun and young students love learning about the environment and endangered species. Construction has now commenced for the much anticipated Ferny Grove Central Development, with the official 'sod turning’ taking place on Tuesday 27th July.

This initial part of the development will see construction of the multi-deck carpark which is expected to take around 13 months to complete. The remainder of the construction will follow once this expanded carpark is completed and is projected to take a further 15 months (28 months of construction in total).

During the build, there will be a considerable reduction in car parking spaces available (reduction of between 326 and 188 car parking spaces compared to now). Rail commuters are reminded to plan ahead and perhaps consider other modes of transport or make alternative arrangements. The good news is that, upon completion of the development, commuter car parking will increase by more than 40%, from 973 spaces currently available to 1416 spaces available for public use.

Train and bus service timetables will not be affected during construction. It is also noted that the popular Ferny Grove Markets, that take place every Sunday at the Ferny Grove Train station carpark, and will be largely unaffected. Upon completion of the multiuse carpark, the markets will then move to this area permanently.

A Message from Peter The Eatons Echo is a fantastic initiative and I hope it will be well received by the community. I will be a regular contributor and I will use this column to keep you up to date on what’s happening in our local area.

Upgrades to local schools I’ve been working with local schools and their communities to secure funding for important facilities and technology upgrades. I’m pleased to provide an update on some of the projects I’ve recently secured funding for.

Genesis Christian College will undertake development of a master plan thanks to $20,000 in funding from the Capital Grants Program. This is almost half of the total cost and will help the school strategically plan for future growth.

In Albany Creek, grants from the Local Schools Community fund meant Albany Creek State School could construct a shade sail to cover an outdoor learning space. Albany Creek High School was able to regenerate the area outside the sports hall with concreting, astro-turf, seating and shade. Albany Hills State School received funding to upgrade IT equipment to assist in delivering programs for students.

Another Local Schools Community Grant provided funding to assist Eatons Hill State School to upgrade playground equipment and install soft-fall.

These are just some of the projects funded through this program. It has been incredibly successful in assisting schools to deliver much needed facilities upgrades for local children.

Federal Government Grant Opportunities There are some grant opportunities open which may be of interest to you.

The Safer Communities Round 6 – Infrastructure Grants which provides schools, places of worship, community organisations, and local councils with grants of up to $500,000 for crime prevention initiatives. Applications close 5 August 2021.

The incredibly popular New Colombo Plan is open accepting applications for their 2022 scholarship round. The New Columbo Plan aims to lift Australian knowledge of the IndoPacific by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region.

There are two programs students can apply for: • Scholarships for study up to 19 months; and • Mobility grants for short and longer-term study.

Applications close 22 August 2021.
