Albany Creek School Students Supporting Homeless Youth

Young people facing homelessness are getting their lives back on track thanks to a generous donation from Albany Creek State High School.

Money raised by the school’s students is supporting the Sponsor a Bed program at Carinity Orana. The service provides crisis accommodation for homeless people aged 16 to 21 years and young people at risk of becoming homeless. The organisation provides immediate supported accommodation at Bald Hills for up to five residents at a time, for an average stay of six months.

Ainsley Gilbert and Nadia de Gong were members of Albany Creek State High School’s Student Representative Council which late last year organised the fundraiser.

“We were looking for a charity to support and we saw how Carinity Orana provides for people who are less fortunate, and helps those who are in dire circumstances,” Ainsley said.

“I personally thought for us teenagers who may know young people who need some help sometimes, Carinity is a very helpful organisation to have in our community and to support.” Nadia said the school’s students raised around $500 through a Christmas-themed free dress day.

“We asked students to wear a Christmas shirt to school and bring a $2 donation. The support was amazing; we didn’t expect the event to be so large and for so many of our junior school students to participate,” she said.

Carinity Orana Program Manager, Dave McNair, thanked the school students for their generosity in supporting an important

local community service.

“Many of the young people referred to our service lack the basic items they need to live such as clothing, uniforms, toiletries, linen and access to transport – things we often take for granted. Our service relies on generous donors for support,” Dave said.

Anyone wishing to sponsor a bed at Carinity Orana can pledge their support online at www.carinity.org.au/campaign/ sponsor-bed or by phoning (07) 3550 3737.

A Spectrum Of Brains

‘I’m a nice lady’, Tey assures Echo News when asked to describe herself. She is also a ‘true greenie at heart’ and the developer of her very own all-natural beauty brand. Having struggled with her diagnosis of Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder and ADHD, Tey has faced many challenges throughout her youth in engaging with extracurricular activities. Her mother, Amina, explained that, “In the early childhood education system, she was being left out of both individual and group activities despite being able to express interest.” Amina recalls a vast array of instances where Tey has attempted to engage in a new skill set at school but has been advised by teachers that they cannot manage her daughter. Unfortunately, not every classroom has the capacity to “manage” diverse children. While this has led to her exclusion, it also taught Tey to redirect her sensory seeking and diverse qualities into her own passions and interests—hence, the creation of Tey’s Cosmetics.

It was about a year ago, when Tey began school, that the girl decided to bring her brand into fruition. She’d taken interested in other kids’ make-up palettes and nail polish and realised that make-up for kids was too expensive and made of unnatural ingredients. Being a creative greenie, it was Tey’s first thought to create an alternative herself. She now takes pride and joy in making cheap, natural, skin-friendly bath and lip products for all ages. So far, the business remains “low-key”, while Tey’s family works out the kinks of marketing, media, and businessmanagement. It is predominantly just for Tey’s enjoyment, and a means by which she can learn about basic science, maths, art, and geography. More information and products can be found on Tey’s newly established website: www.teyscosmetics.com

Of course, to this day, Tey is still learning to embrace her neurodiversity. However, with the unconditional love of her parents, as well as her own determination to give things a go, Tey is an inspiration to all. Amina shares that, ‘The love I have for Tehya is totally unchanged with her diagnosis. Tehya is the same person she was prior to the diagnosis as to who she is today. I just love her for everything she is and for her witty personality.’

Echo News looks forwards to the new heights Tey’s Cosmetics will reach, and congratulates Tey for her outstanding achievements.

A Win For Wildlife In Bunya

hectares of land on Eatons Crossing Road at Eatons Hill. This land is key wildlife habitat, with the property containing two vegetation communities suitable for koalas and the site contributes to the extension of the green corridor of Four Mile Creek. This corridor facilitates the movement and dispersal of koalas and other species towards core habitat in the Eatons Hill and Warner areas.

Councillor Matt Constance (Div 10) said he was glad Council had secured the first property within the Hills District of Moreton Bay.

It's a win for wildlife in The Hills District with the recent purchase of a 14.5-hectare property by Moreton Bay Regional Council under the Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes program.

The property located at 519 Bunya Road, Bunya is a prime koala and wildlife habitat that will now remain untouched by development for many years to come under the program that was introduced in 2020.

The objective of Council’s Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes Program is to acquire strategic properties for the management and conservation of our region’s natural ecosystems. The properties seek to maintain and enhance connectivity of our local wildlife, through a focus on the management of green corridors and the protection of priority species into the future. This property will be Council’s fifth purchase under the program and another step towards preserving 75% of Moreton Bay’s land mass from development.

Other recent purchases of land in our region have been 13

‘The Hills District is full of lush Australian bushland that’s just perfect for all kinds of wildlife like koalas to call home,’ he said.

‘It’s a major drawcard for residents to have that connection to nature and we know locals want to see more protections in place for our wildlife, so I’m glad Council was able to deliver by purchasing this key property in Bunya.’

Council officers will now monitor this land and rehabilitate it if necessary by removing invasive weeds and planting further wildlife habitat to help improve this sanctuary for wildlife.

‘If you look at women in particular, they are more formally educated and moving into their family forming years in their 30s, and they have invested more to prepare themselves, with more education, so they want to make sure they can continue a burgeoning career,’ social demographer Mark McCrindle explained. Georgia Wright

As a young, aspiring writer who dreams for the moon, Georgia Wright has certainly already begun to rattle the stars. A published author, journalist, digital editor, copy writer, and proof-reader at age 19, this girl doesn’t muck around.

Perhaps it was her childhood love of books that lit the fire in her belly to produce stories of her own. Perhaps it was the fact that 7-year-old Georgia was promised by all her teachers that her talent for writing would make her famous someday. Admittedly, it was both. Either way, by the time she had reached Year 11 at Wavell State High School, all the students knew her name, and everyone knew she had put a book on the library’s shelves.

‘Love Hurts’, Georgia’s debut novel—a witty and romantic coming-of-age tale—was co-published by the author herself and InHouse Publishing in 2020, right in the thick of COVID-19. It became quite the local hit within the community!

For work experience in Year 10, Georgia chose to jump aboard The Echo News ship for the week. The team liked her enough to keep her around, and ever since, her role at the Echo has only grown. From producing journalistic work for the company, to then also proofreading the publications, to securing the position as Digital Editor for The Little Echo, Georgia’s contribution is never-ending. Currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Creative Writing and a Minor in Journalism at Queensland University of Technology, Georgia is working hard in all departments to set up her future. Just this month, she secured an internship at the 4ZZZ radio station, where she now produces news stories to present on the radio each Thursday (tune in if you dare!). This way, she can gain a wider range of real-world journalism experience before graduating next year.

What’s more, Georgia offers freelance journalism services to businesses and individuals. She hopes to turn these services into her own business one day, with novel writing to be her side hustle. Until then, she will continue climbing up in the world from publication to publication. Star to star.

I have always had a passion for creating, so, I ended up turning my weekend hobby of baking and creating for my loved ones into a side business, which still continues to bring me joy and balance with family and home life," said Richelle.

After founding Sprinkles N Cookies, the business quickly gathered momentum leading to lots of community connections, sales, and smiles.

Richelle is now renowned for her delightful vanilla cookies that don’t only look heavenly, but taste like it, too with regulars even allowing her to be part of their annual family celebrations. Furthermore, Richelle has been recognised by the Australian Cake Artists and Decorators Association for her incredible creations and has been nominated for the 'best new cookie artist' in this years awards.

But Sprinkles N Cookies isn't just any baking business as they bake and decorate not only fondant, but also royal icing cookies. There are only a few cookies artists in the Moreton Bay Council region licensed to sell royal icing cookies due to the stringent licensing procedure -and Sprinkles N Cookies is one of them! Stay tuned for classes, to learn how to decorate and make your very own cookies!

Danni Francis

General Manager - Aspley Hornets Football Club

Hi, I’m Danni the General Manager of the Aspley Hornets Football Club, located in the heart of Carseldine and the biggest Aussie Rules Club on the Northside of Brisbane. This non-profit organisation consists of three bars, an expansive and welcoming gaming room, a large dog friendly deck, three function rooms, 6 Points Café, and finally a 160 seated Bistro area. Every dollar spent in the club goes back to the community or our Aussie Rules players that range from three years old to the over 55’s. I hold a Business Degree with a Major in Marketing and started my career at a small club. I instantly fell in love with the role and hospitality. Just over eight years ago, I found my way to the Hornets and have never looked back. I have worked in various roles including gaming, marketing, operations, and for the last four years, General Manager. Our team at the Hornets is strong and diverse, with a notable presence of female leaders, allowing us to run the club with compassion, empathy, and a supportive environment for our team and members, akin to a family.

As a mother of two, I cherish my Hornet’s family and my passion lies in growing the team and providing a venue that is associated with words like family, friendly, safe, and welcoming for our members.

One of my proudest achievements is our team. Their loyalty and dedication is truly remarkable, and it's heartening to see our club being considered as a second home by members, reflected in the kind feedback we receive.

I am also incredibly proud of our club's achievements, including winning the Best Gaming Award and being a runner-up in the Best Club Medium and Best Footy Club categories. We are committed to continuous growth, both on and off the field, as we strive to be a significant supporter of Aussie rules in the region and provide a hub that fosters a sense of community within our club.

Everton News from your State

Neighbour Day and Easter Egg Hunt 2023

Finally! After three years of disruptions, we managed to celebrate and host our Annual Neighbour Day Event with the eagerly anticipated Easter Egg Hunt again sponsored by Hicks Real Estate. More than 2000 locals came down to Teralba Park on Sunday April 2nd to join in the fun and games with some of our wonderful community organisations.

We had over 25 stalls from local Community Groups and were entertained by the Brisbane Brass Band and the National Servicemen‘s Memorial Pipe Band.

Kids scrambled for Easter Eggs and participated in some good old-fashioned games of tug-o-war, sack races, egg & spoon races and 3 legged races.

I’d like to thank all our participants for their great efforts to make it such a fun morning, not forgetting our Emergency Services teams who do such a great job and let the kids clamber through their vehicles!

Member for Everton TIM MANDER

Congratulations to Youth Member for Everton, Vidar Pittendreigh on his great work so far as the youth advocate for the Everton electorate. I look forward to working closely with Vidar throughout the year to improve representation of young people in Everton and state-wide.

It was my pleasure to welcome the senior school leader’s from Everton Park State High School and Albany Creek State High School to Parliament House recently. I enjoyed hearing lots of bright ideas about how we can improve our state and I‘m confident our future is in good hands!
