A Trail of Creativity

Artists and artisans from throughout the Moreton Bay hinterland are in full swing preparing for the tenth annual Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios event.

Organised by Creative Samford Inc. this self-drive event promises something for everyone. During the first four weekends in June, artists open their studio doors whilst others collaborate in pop-up art spaces to exhibit their work. Diverse in medium and techniques, visitors will get to see behind the curtains of creative spaces - witnessing first hand artists’ inspirations and techniques. Some artists will be involved for the tenth time and others are joining Trails for the very first time, cementing the event as a vibrant showcase of the best the region has to offer. Dayboro will be spoilt for choice as three creative spaces open up for visitors this year – Running Duck Studio, Pavilion Artists at Dayboro Showgrounds, Dayboro Art Gallery – representing dozens of local artists.

Trails can’t happen without the tremendous support of local businesses and organisations, and we are so incredibly proud to announce Community Bank Samford part of Bendigo Bank as Platinum Sponsor for 2024. Community banking is based on a ‘profit-with-purpose’ model, which means 100% of their profits are returned directly to the community that has generated them. As a supporter of the Arts, the bank last year commissioned a public art mural on the front of their building in Main Street Samford, engaging Creative Samford Inc. members to create the work. The mural will be a special stop on the Trails map, and you will see the unique story of Samford unfold in the five panel art work.

We would also like to sincerely thank and acknowledge Gold

Sponsor Kwik Kopy Geebung, and Bronze Sponsors Chelsea Perry at Craig Doyle Real Estate, The Long Yard Larder Samford and Mercure Clear Mountain Lodge, as well as the ongoing support of City of Moreton Bay and Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism [MBRIT].

The Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios runs from Samford to Cashmere and Eaton’s Hill, from Clear Mountain to Dayboro and across the Moreton Bay hinterland from the 1st – 23rd June. Doors open at 10am and close at 4pm. Visit www.creativesamford.com for more information.

Recipe of the month

Mint Slice Truffles

An easy idea for when you’re asked to bring a plate!

The foundation of these truffles comprises only 3 simple ingredients, offering a versatile base that can be enjoyed as is or elevated, much like how we enhanced them with a chocolate dip and a delightful Aero bar slice, imparting an additional minty kick. What makes these truffles truly exceptional is their ability to be prepared up to 14 days beforehand and easily stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. These delectable treats not only serve as the ideal post-dinner mint but also make for a splendid no-bake gift, adding a delicious touch to any occasion!

Makes 15 | Prep time: 5 mins | Cook time: 5 mins Ingredients

200g pkt Arnott’s Mint Slice biscuits

125ml (1/2 cup) sweetened condensed milk 35g (1/3 cup) cocoa powder

290g pkt dark choc melts

Aero peppermint block, sliced, to decorate Method

Step 1: Place the biscuits in a food processor and process until finely crushed. Add the sweetened condensed milk and cocoa and process until the mixture starts to come together into a ball. Transfer to a bowl and place in the fridge for 10 minutes to firm.

Step 2: Line a baking tray with baking paper. Roll 2 teaspoonfuls of the chocolate mixture into balls and transfer to prepared tray. Place in the fridge for 10 minutes to chill.

Step 3 : Meanwhile, place the choc melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave, on Medium, stirring every minute with a metal spoon, for 2-3 minutes or until melted and smooth.

Step 4 : Use a fork to dip balls into the melted chocolate, allowing excess to drip off. Return to the tray. Top with Aero to decorate. Set aside for 5 minutes to set.

Local Lions Club Continues to Make a Difference in the Community

The Albany Creek Lions Club recently welcomed Kathy into their ranks during their last dinner meeting, marking another milestone in their ongoing efforts to support and serve the community.

At the meeting, Kathy was officially inducted by the incoming District Governor Elect, Richard, who expressed confidence in her ability to contribute to the club’s mission of helping those in need.

Over the past month, the club has remained active in various community initiatives, demonstrating their commitment to making a positive impact. They have continued to deliver meals to individuals in the area, provided assistance at Bunnings to serve hungry patrons, and lent a hand at KidsFest, organized by the Moreton Bay Council at Pine Rivers Park.

As Easter approaches, the club encourages reflection on the true meaning of the holiday and emphasizes the importance of extending a helping hand to those who may be in need. They remind community members that they are always available to offer support and assistance whenever required.

President Kaye and Secretary Graeme extend a warm invitation to those interested in joining their efforts to support the community. With Easter serving as a reminder of the spirit of giving, the club welcomes individuals who may have some free time and a desire to make a difference. They emphasize that even a couple of extra pairs of hands can significantly impact their ability to reach and help more people.

Escape to Nature: Affordable Local Camping

Looking for a budget-friendly camping experience without venturing too far from home? Look no further! Nestled in the heart of Samford, the BadenPowell Campsite on 68 Cash Avenue, Samford offers a picturesque and cost-effective alternative for campers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

One little-known fact about this local gem of a camping site is that it is open to the public. Yes, you read that right! Residents can enjoy the tranquility and beauty of Baden-Powell Park from as little as $15 per night – a fraction of the cost of some destination camping spots.

Why choose Baden-Powell Park over more distant camping destinations? For starters, it’s a stone’s throw away, making it an ideal getaway for those wanting to experience the joys of camping without the hefty travel expenses. As we all know, heading out for a camping adventure often entails pricey campsite fees, fuel costs, and other miscellaneous expenses. Operated by Scouts Queensland, the campsite primarily serves Scouts, Guides, and community groups. However, limited powered and non-powered sites are available for the public. To access these, individuals must sign up for a ‘Supporter of Scouting’ annual membership, priced at a modest $20. Bookings can be conveniently made through the Scouts QLD website.

Key Features:

Cost: An affordable $15 per night, making it one of the cheapest camping options in the region.

Facilities: Enjoy a heated pool, access to drinking water, basic toilet and shower facilities, and the unique opportunity to bring along your pets.

Campsite in Samford

Spacious Surroundings: With plenty of room amidst natural surroundings, you won’t feel cramped up next to other campers, allowing for a genuine camping experience.

Local Attractions: A short stroll from Baden-Powell Park leads you to the charming Samford Village. Take advantage of this proximity to enjoy cafes, boutique shops, parks, ice cream parlors, and more. It’s the perfect blend of a rustic camping experience with the convenience of nearby amenities.

Consider Baden-Powell Park for your next camping escapade, and discover the joy of affordable camping right in your backyard. And if you’re in the mood for exploring other sites, Mount Cotton is another option worth checking out. Happy camping!

In a touching display of remembrance and resilience, Chermside West locals Kevin and Jane continue their annual tradition of commemorating ANZAC Day for a fourth year running.

Since 2020, when the world grappled with the onset of the pandemic, the couple has maintained a steadfast commitment to honouring the sacrifices made by veterans. Originally starting their tradition with a visit to the Dawn Service in Palmwoods, alongside Jane’s sister Lynne. Their father had lived at Eudlo and was involved in the RSL & Legacy for many moons, as well as serving in WW2 and New Guinea. As well, their brother served in Vietnam, making ANZAC Day an unmissable commemoration of their loved ones’ legacies. Kevin and Jane continued attending the ceremony even after the passing of Jane’s father, who had been actively involved in the RSL and Legacy for many years.

Kevin’s passion for collecting ANZAC badges became a focal point of their tribute. Over the years, he amassed a significant collection, which inspired Jane to tap into her creativity and create a wall-hanging to display them. The couple expanded the spectacle each year, incorporating crosses, ANZAC material panels, shirts, and photographs of Jane‘s father and Kevin‘s three uncles, who all served in various conflicts, including WW2. On an interesting note, Kevin’s name originated from the fallen hero of the three, who did not return from his deployment.

Each material panel depicts the different stages of major conflicts such as WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and other peacekeeping exercises. Driven by a deep sense of remembrance, Kevin has also collected shirts with ANZAC themes and crafted white crosses with even more badges!

The couple‘s dedication extends beyond their front yard, however, as they actively participate in ANZAC Day events. They play the National Anthem, recite The Ode, sound the Last Post, and even read the infamous poem written about Flanders Field. Last year, they expanded their tribute by playing John Williamson‘s iconic ‚True Blue.‘

Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, with passersby frequently stopping to admire the display and compliment the couple’s idea. Some then photograph the display to share with friends and family who have served as veterans, leading into a ripple effect of appreciation and remembrance within the community.

Despite initial challenges posed by the pandemic, Kevin and Jane‘s commitment has always remained unwavering. Last year, a couple of neighbours joined them for the Dawn Service, and they continued to “Light up the Dawn” at 6:00 am, welcoming anyone who wished to join in the tribute. Following the solemn observance, the couple hosted a breakfast for friends and family as a gesture of unity and remembrance.

Kevin and Jane‘s dedication to honouring the memory of their loved ones and all those who have served underscores the importance of preserving our heritage. Their message to readers, “Lest We Forget”, echoes a sentiment shared by many, emphasizing the enduring significance of ANZAC Day.

This year, on April 25th, the couple invites the community to join them at 7 Marford Street, Chermside West, for the Dawn Service at 4:20 am and the ‘Light up the Dawn’ ceremony at 6am. For more information, contact Kevin and Jane on either 0410540207 or 0424105660. Show some ANZAC spirit for our fallen heroes and come along on the day.

Taking Learning to New Heights

Tiffany Steinitz, 2023 graduate of Mt Maria College, Mitchelton, knew she did not want to go to university. Instead, she envisioned herself entering the Australian Defence Force.

‘I always struggled with school. I learn best by getting my hands dirty which VET allowed me to do. I’m so grateful for the Mrs Khursheed Ward, VET Pathways Coordinator, for enrolling me into my course and providing me a clear pathway for my future,’ said Tiffany.

Enrolled in a Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot), Tiffany took her learning to new heights and experienced things she never thought she would. At just 16, Tiffany earnt her Government Drone License and English Proficiency License.

In early 2023, Tiffany applied to the Australian Defence Force – Army as a drone operator. She was originally successful in her application before she experienced a

setback. Having been diagnosed with both ADHD and Dyslexia, Tiffany never imagined this would stop her from reaching her dream job.

Following a second round of interviews, Tiffany wowed the recruiters with her qualifications and her passion for aviation. Acknowledging her drive, her dedication, and her persistence to overcome obstacles, Tiffany was successfully recruited to her dream role.

Tiffany already has her eyes set on her next goals, acknowledging the sky is not the limit! She aims to have a long career with the Defence Force and is currently studying a Certificate III in Meteorology. Understanding the weather seems like the next logical step to excelling in the drone field to Tiffany.

Uni Life: Empowering Transition for Young Adults with Disabilities

Ethan, 21 years old, is in his final year of a disability day program called Uni Life.

He had spent his first year after graduating school exploring programs and trying new things. Nothing suited him and his anxiety worsened until his parents lost hope for the future and he was spending his time at home, in his room, with no purposeful activities. They discovered Uni Life through a friend with a disabled son and decided to give it a go. After an occasionally rocky start he settled in nicely, made good friends, and found a purpose for his days. Later this year he and his friends will do work experience and make some informed, supported decisions about their future after Uni Life. The future is looking much brighter for Ethan.

Finishing school is a huge life transition for young people with a disability. It can be a terrifying time for their family too. After years of supported schooling, routines, and certainty the young people have to find a path through varied new experiences that are often anxiety-provoking. That’s why a Mum, Kathy Harris, created Uni Life – a day program for young adults transitioning out of Special Schools. With the support of friends and colleagues Kathy started a charity to run Uni Life. Today, the charity runs four Uni Life groups at three venues in Brisbane and is expanding to the Gold Coast with the support of Commonwealth Government grant funding. The participants stay in the program part time for up to three years and transition out into work, study, or a micro enterprise.

Uni Life is based at tertiary campuses to give the young adults a higher education experience like some of their peers. The inclusive environment of a TAFE campus helps them mingle naturally with students and provides opportunities for collaborations.

A Uni Life program has opened this year at TAFE Bracken Ridge. Program Group Leader, Mathilde Bach Stougaard, provides a routine for two days every week. This is something many neurodivergent students miss when they finish school. The days include therapy, learning, fun, and passion projects exploring the interests of the young person. Many of the participants have high sensory needs and rely on a device to communicate. The program supports this with strategies and tools and neuro-affirming practices.

You can find out more at www.inclusivesupports.com.au, including enrolment information. If you know a young adult between 17 and 25 years old who is finishing school, or has graduated in recent years, then the Uni Life program could be for them.

Run With Rob Now Runs With Warner

Most people assume running is a solo activity. However, running club Run With Rob very much believes runners go further together.

Many RWR members would attest to feeling empowered from running in, and as, a pack.

Running in a group like RWR offers many benefits to new and long-term runners; it can build commitment, motivation and essentially a sense of belonging in a community that values the ability and goals of all. You may come to runner farther and faster.

Most importantly however, it can make running fun.

Such were the motives of Renee West, a self-employed mother of two, when she started a branch of RWR in her local suburb of Warner.

Meeting at Dragonfly Park, on Pallas Parade, Warner (at the same shelter used for Warner ParkRun), the group comes together each afternoon at 5.00pm, Monday to Thursday, for a run lasting about 45 minutes. Sessions may occasionally include hill runs, or speed sets, but are tailored to everyone’s capacity. Renee emphasises no runner will ever be left behind.

‘We have a few who are walkers, and a few who are quite speedy,’ says Renee. ‘We are a group that likes to participate weekly at Warner ParkRun [7.00am every Saturday morning, over a 5-kilometre distance]. So, a lot of our effort goes towards everyone bettering their times there.’

Such an inclusive environment is how Renee has been able to attract runners ageing from 10 to 60+. Do not be fooled though – many of this group have set themselves ambitious goals.

‘This year, we have beautiful Sophie doing her first half-marathon [21.1 kilometres] at the Brisbane Marathon Festival. Of our ladies, we have Patsy Dutton and Lisa Muller also doing their first half-marathons at the Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival. Janelle Katene (aka Nelzy) will be running her first full marathon [42.2 kilometres] at Sunshine Coast.’

After moving from Hervey Bay, Nelzy considers the Warner RWR group as being her saviour, both mentally and physically. ‘I never knew I would find that same crew [spirit] as Hervey Bay that is inspirational, energetic and fun. The people are all uniquely different but we really complement each other.’

Similarly, the Warner RWR group enjoys coming together to celebrate accomplishments and other milestones, including birthdays, with the first Thursday evening dedicated for such reasons in which members share a plate of treats, as well as good conversation.

But feeling supported and building a shared commitment to running is why each member keeps showing up. A sentiment expressed by Patsy during a Monday session of running hills.

‘I didn’t even feel like running today, but once I saw the crew, I felt my energy lift and enjoyed the run. My favourite energy is on the hills; we all pass each other and offer words of encouragement every time. It’s so uplifting and inspiring. Everyone brings their own special qualities to the group.’

24/7 Prescription Collection a Game Changer for the Region

Commuters, busy parents, and patients with repeat prescriptions often find waiting at the pharmacy during business hours a challenge.

However, our community can now rejoice as local pharmacy, TerryWhite Chemmart Upper Kedron,, has become the first pharmacy in Australia to introduce the Pharmaself24, a secure and convenient 24-hour prescription collection system.

Owned by Tahnee Simpson and her business partners, this pioneering initiative aims to redefine the patient experience by offering flexibility in prescription collection. Ms. Simpson expressed excitement about this new venture, stating, ‘As pharmacists, we are dedicated to caring for our patients in every way possible. This 24/7 collection point is an additional way for patients to conveniently collect their medicines.’

Understanding the unique needs of the local community, Ms. Simpson highlighted the challenges faced by those working beyond typical business hours. ‘From working parents to commuters, this additional layer of convenience builds upon the care we can provide,’ she added.

Patients can access the 24/7 collection service when requesting prescriptions or other pharmacy items, either in-store, online, or via the myTWC app. Once ready for collection, a one-time SMS is sent to the patient, utilising customised and secure software for access.

Ms. Simpson emphasized the commitment to exceptional service, stating, ‘We are proud to provide exceptional service and a high level of care for all customers. For many, being able

to save time and collect their pharmacy needs at a convenient time will make their lives easier, and our pharmacists are always available for advice and enquiries.’

Located in the newly opened Ellendale Village Shopping Centre, TerryWhite Chemmart Upper Kedron, owned by Tahnee Simpson and Blaine Woods, aims to elevate customer service for the local community. The experienced pharmacy team is excited about the opportunities the Pharmaself24 brings to enhance patient care.

Sugar Easter Eggs Spark Community Spirit

An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Club

What a fun day we had recently with a group of ladies and children at the Samford Bowls Club creating Sugar Easter Eggs.

The room was a hive of activity as each participant decorated two Easter Eggs. It was amazing to see the variety of decorating styles that were created.

Cake Decorator Lorna with a participant at our Easter Egg activity at Samford Bowls Club

This was a great way to spread the word about how much fun our hobby can be. There is always something new being developed and learning new techniques together makes it fun. Hopefully we may gain some new members.

Our meeting on 20th April is a workshop being conducted by Sarah Jane from Studio Cakes on Samford Road. Having a cake supply shop so handy is wonderful and Sarah Jane will be teaching us some of the newer techniques used on sides of fondant covered cakes. Then we will be able to try them for ourselves.

Several of our members are visiting the Logan Branch for a demonstration day at the end of March and are hoping to pick up more new ideas.

Brisbane North Cake Decorators is a branch of the Queensland Cake Decorators Association Inc., and we meet monthly on the third Saturday of the month (except December) at the Arana Hills Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills at 1pm. Our aim is to encourage the love of cake decorating in all its aspects and we love to share our knowledge with everyone. Details are on our Facebook page if anyone is interested, Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or via email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail.com

A Season of Growth and Cultivation

An update from the Hills Organic Garden

Our summer months have been rather hot and humid with very little grown, eventuating in not much produce to share. Nevertheless, autumn has arrived and will no doubt offer cooler temperatures, that will be welcomed!

There is a lot of work to be done at the garden this month with a view to getting the beds ready for planting. They all need topping up with new soil, compost along with the application of fertiliser followed by a rest period. Planting will take place when the temperatures get cooler to give the young plants a chance to survive and grow.

This year's vegetable planting will consist of broccoli, spinach, radish, snow peas, silver beet, cauliflower, cabbages, zucchinis, eggplant, lettuce, beetroot and tomatoes. It is not recommended to plant the same crop in the same bed as the previous season, so we will be ensuring crop rotation is carried out.

HOG members always remark that this is a fun time of the year, but also a busy one as the newly planted seedlings require regular watering and fertilising.

The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Members meet on a Sunday afternoon during the summer months from 3pm - 5pm. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance.

You will find the group at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors.

Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information. The team look forward to meeting you.

Learn More About Lilies!

The guest speaker will be Michael Gibson who will share with members his advice on growing a wonderful display of Day Lilies. New members are welcome. For more information please telephone Elizabeth: 07 3851 056

Embrace Nature: Join a Garden Club

An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

Last month, our Club learned that an understanding of geology is vital for gardening success. Guest Speaker Bruce Ham, from The Brisbane Organic Growers Inc. (BOGI), explained the ways in which geological influences affect soil for gardening.

These included:

pH Levels: The mineral composition of the parent material affects the pH level of the soil. Soils derived from limestone or basalt, for example, may be more alkaline, while those from granite may be more acidic. An awareness of this geology helps gardeners choose plants that will thrive in an environment aligning with their pH preferences.

Mineral and Nutrient Content: The geological parent material contributes essential nutrients to the soil. For instance, volcanic soils often provide plants with essential nutrients like potassium. Soils derived from granite will have a different mineral composition than those derived from limestone, contributing specific nutrients to the soil which impact upon plant growth. Knowing the nutrient and mineral profile of your soil means you are better able to make informed decisions about fertilization to address deficiencies.

Our Club members now have a deeper appreciation for how crucial an understanding of geological influences is to optimizing soil conditions for plant growth - thank you Bruce! In the coming months, our Guest Speakers will cover a variety of gardening topics, including Native Plants and Begonias. For more information, please feel free to email us at mitcheltongc@gmail.com. Our meetings are held at The Enoggera Memorial Hall (Trundle St) on the first Thursday of the month. Doors open at 9:30 am and the $5.00 entry fee includes morning tea - hope to see you there soon!

Happy Easter

Dickson News

Warm wishes to you and your loved ones for Easter! Easter embodies hope, renewal, and the joy of being together with family. Have a wonderful holiday, and if you‘re on the road, stay safe!

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day is our chance to let our servicemen and women – past and present – know that their service and sacrifice is remembered, appreciated, and honoured.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a significant event in history. Over 6,000 ships and 10,000 aircraft gathered at Normandy‘s beaches in France. Among them were Australian airmen who bravely supported this massive operation.

On D-Day, 13 Australians lost their lives, with many more casualties during the Normandy campaign. In total, 39,657 Australians lost their lives in service during World War II. Look out for my Commemorative Newsletter in your mailbox, and I encourage you to attend a local service.

Dickson Seniors Expo - Save the Date

Planning is underway for the 2024 Dickson Seniors Expo to be held on Tuesday 27 August at the South Pine Sports Complex,

South Pine Road, Brendale. If your organisation or business would like a stall at the expo, please contact my office for an Expression of Interest Form. Details below.

Tickets for the expo will be released closer to the date –entrance will be free again this year.

Labor’s Tax on the Family Car

Labor wants to tax new cars. A lot of Aussie’s rely on SUVs for family needs and utes for work. The Labor Governments proposed tax on these vehicles could hike up prices by thousands of dollars, possibly leading car makers to pull out of the Australian market.

Under Labor, Australians will pay:

• $11,020 more for a Toyota RAV4

• $12,180 more for an MG ZS

• $25,050 more for a Toyota Landcruiser

• $17,950 more for a Ford Ranger

• $14,490 more for a Toyota Hilux; and

• $13,830 more for an Isuzu D-Max.

While not everyone drives a SUV or ute, I’ll fight against Labor’s new taxes, especially during this cost-of-living crisis.

JP Services

JP services are available at my Strathpine office. JPs play a crucial role in the community by assisting residents with various legal matters, such as witnessing signatures, certifying documents, and administering oaths and affirmations.

LNP Promise - Women’s Economic Security Plan

Women shouldn't be locked-out of a job because they can’t afford the cost of job-seeking.

The LNP has announced, if successful in this year’s election, a $20 million financial assistance package to support women returning to the workforce.

If a woman has left her employment for longer than six months to focus on family care, then we should do everything we can to support her when she chooses the time is right to find a new job. Grants of up to $5,000 will help cover the costs of essentials such as; workwear, childcare, Re-certification and training, CV prep, Technology and relocation.

It’s just one part of the LNP’s Women’s Economic Security Plan and will tackle the economic barriers currently preventing women from re-joining the workforce.

New Everton Park Library Is Now Open

Last Saturday 9th March saw the opening of our new Library, which is a welcome addition to our local community hub in Everton Park. The renewal has also built on improvements to Fallon Park and a car park upgrade at Everton Park Bowls and Community Club.

Student Leadership (LEAP) Day

On 1st March I was pleased to be guest speaker at the Student Leadership Day – this year hosted by Albany Hills State School. This event (known as LEAP Day) has now been an annual occurrence for the last 15 years and sees the student leaders from the cluster of schools - Albany Hills State School, Albany Creek State School, McDowall State School, and Eatons Hill State School join together to learn all about being better leaders.

It’s a pleasure to see these bright young students eager to learn more about becoming good leaders in not only their schools, but communities as well.
