Stationery for School Children in Need

Currently, Brisbane North is home to over 215 families—many with multiple children—who are in desperate need of stationery for the 2021 school year’s commencement. However, Stationery Aid, a new local not-for-profit organisation with a vision, plans to help resolve this issue, at least partially.

After identifying the need to collect excess and used school stationery items in order to divert them from landfill, Stationery Aid began their mission to provide at least 100 stationery packs to disadvantaged students and families. These educational resources—inclusive of pens, pencils, staplers, glue, rulers, paints, math equipment, exercise books, etc.—will be sorted, cleaned, renewed, and then donated locally.

Stationery Aid is presently conducting a pilot program in Brisbane North with the Hills Collective, Arana Hills—a team of volunteers, lead by AJ Heijns, who dedicate their time to helping our community. This year, the two organisations will measure what they receive and how much they can proudly donate to those in need.

In the forefront of Stationery Aid’s vision is growing their social enterprise to hopefully annex all those who are lacking Haydee Forster, one of the educational resources within Stationery Aid Directors our state and country. They are also in dire need of monetary organising stationery

donations to expand their not-for-profit organisation. A Little Op Shop With A Big Heart

Supporting community is what Picabeen Community Association does best, and their Op Shop in Gilston St, Keperra strives to do the same.

Staffed by a wonderful team of volunteers, the Picabeen Change Room Op Shop is more than a place where you can buy fabulous, affordable, pre-loved clothing and accessories for all ages.

Project worker, Gayle Brook, who supports the volunteers, says that the op shop is more like a community hub where regular customers come for a chat, browse for clothes and enjoy some time out from the daily stresses of life.

‘2020 has been a particularly challenging year for so many people who have lost jobs or opportunities to gather with family and friends. Some of our customers come in a few times a week just to sit on our green couch and socialise,’ said Gayle.

‘We have young mums who come in with their toddlers, teenagers looking FOR up-style retro fashions, women of all ages sharing life’s ups and downs, and elderly people enjoying company.’

When needed, the staff at the op shop will refer people to Picabeen Community Centre in Hoben Street, Mitchelton for practical support, such as food hampers, English speaking classes, youth support, or playgroup.

The Change Room has always been a great little community connection point and people love the fact that all proceeds go directly to this local community.

However it’s not only customers who have found community connection at Picabeen Change Room. There are around 20

volunteers that offer their time each week some of which have just started this year after their other volunteering opportunities fell through due to COVID-19. In addition, there are also some fabulous volunteers who have a disability or need some extra support.

‘For many, the shop has provided an opportunity to be valued, learn new skills, give back to the community, meet new people and gain a sense of purpose- it really is an Opportunity Shop, in the true sense of the word!’ said Gayle.

Marine Debris

By Lorelei Pawsey, Year 4 10 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean every year and only 2% of it gets recycled. It washes off city streets and into storm drains, blows from dumps, and floats in a river’s current. Marine debris is also known as marine litter. A big part of Lorelei Pawsey ocean debris is plastic. Plastic won’t fully break down. It can only reduce to little pieces that are called micro-plastics which harm sea animals. Sea animals choke on the micro-plastics and die. In 2050, it is believed that there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, so we need to do something about it now!

Luckily, there are many ways that we can help. We can help by recycling, picking up rubbish and putting it in the correct bin, using beeswax wraps instead of cling wrap, bringing bags to the grocery store and recycling soft plastics. My family and I want to be more sustainable, and by doing all of these things, I will also be raising awareness in my neighbourhood to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle.’ This will help by reducing plastic and waste so our ocean can be cleaner.

I am going to go back to the way things were in the beginning.

I’m being a steward of creation by not drowning the earth in plastic. I’m going to start using biodegradable products that breakdown into soil. Why don’t you join me?

Mixed Bowls Event Showcases Ferny Grove

The Ferny Grove Bowls Club greens were enhanced with a medley of colour as bowlers from across Brisbane gathered recently to contest the Ladies’ Mixed Medley event.

Fourteen teams comprising of 56 players in total contested a full day of lawn bowls, all vying to take home the cash prizes.

The weather was kind and the bowlers enjoyed the challenge of a format of both pairs and fours games. The winners finished the day undefeated after five games and were a combination team from two visiting clubs. Ferny Grove teams took third and fourth places.

Carving up the Courts at NetSetGo

Each year, Pine Hills Netball Club offers netball-loving girls and boys aged 5-10 a fun, safe, social and active program— Suncorp NetSetGo! As a suitable environment for children of all abilities, NetSetGo gifts participants a positive introduction to the sport. It involves weekly sessions in which children enjoy skill-based activities, minor games, music, dance, and modified matches that will help them develop fundamental movement and communication skills.

In netball, team work makes the dream work—so, the more participants the better! Usually, with Pine Hills Netball Club being on the smaller side, around 50-60 kids enrol in the program annually. However, 2020 has seen almost 100 kids from 18 different schools sign up, including 3 boys. For the first time, their 15-20 coaches made the collective decision to add a second session to fit everyone in! Such a tidal wave of interest from the local netball community has even called for a shut-off on registrations.

When asked about the unexpected increase in numbers, Tricia, the Club’s wonderful NetSetGo Registrar, said, “Covid must have forced a lot of kids indoors for a long time so now they’re eager to try out netball and learn new skills. We’re thrilled with the increase in enrolments and look forward to seeing the players development further during the 2021 Winter season.

The club welcomed new and old players who enjoyed improving upon or learning new skills. Players in the summer season were able to see how the skills they were learning on court on Monday nights helped their game the following evening, a very impressive result! The club would also like to thank Red Rooster Arana Hills for sharing in the community spirit with vouchers for their little ones.

As the club signs off from the summer season, they are already in preparation for 2021. Arana Netball Club Inc. are looking for expressions of interest for the 2021 winter season, February - September 2021. Gardening In The Summer Months What To Grow

A monthly update from The Hills Organic Garden Gardening in summer is sometimes a little challenging due to the extreme weather conditions we often experience along with the unwanted pests and diseases.

Nevertheless, if you are able to keep the plants well watered during these hotter months, you’ll have a good chance of harvesting some tasty vegetables.

The crops we tend to cultivate are tomatoes (cherry-types, as they are more pest and disease resistant), capsicums and eggplants. These make for a good start, along with sweetcorn, radish, snake beans, zucchinis and pumpkins. You can also try rosellas and sweet potatoes.

Upon harvesting, our produce is shared amongst the members who enjoy taking home freshly picked veggies. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier, so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon, have a chat and look around our beautiful garden.

Our members meet on a Sunday afternoon during the summer months from 3pm to 5pm at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for juniors.

Pictures 1 & 2: The new water pump has been a hit with the children and is the ideal way to cool down in the hot summer days. Picture 3: The children are enjoying being active with the new swing sets and fort.

Patience is an essential disposition when developing projects for not-for-profit organisations. The playground redevelopment began its life a number of years ago, after extensive dreaming and consultation with children, families and staff members. Some dreams do eventuate.

After delays with construction due to challenges this year and ‘supervision’ from many children, a water pump, a creek, a digging patch, a mud kitchen, rolling grass and rocks, swings, a fort and art space have all been christened. What joy!

Smiles have all been on the faces of the children, parents and teachers alike! There have been some unexpected discoveries: ‘Look you can see the trains (from the top of the bridge)’, ‘It’s like being in a shower without shampoo (water pump)!’

Some children have heard the pump working, which has prompted discussions about how the fox demand driven wash down diversion pump works. Water conservation has been and will continue to be a hot topic! As a staff team, we are over the moon to have watched children’s engagement, exchange of ideas, discovery, courage, consideration of others, problem-solving and patience.

Forward planning is in action at MPC. We can only thank children and families from long ago who shared their ideas for children today to enjoy. Current children are brainstorming and sharing ideas for other areas, the results of which will be appreciated by future children. The playground has certainly provided rock-solid evidence that good things DO come to those who wait!

The new outdoor area is a delight for both children and staff alike!

The festive season brings people together in celebration of the holidays and the pending new year. It is a time of generosity and opportunity to offer a helping hand to your loved ones.

While visiting your elderly relatives or friends, it is important to take note of any changes in wellbeing or living standards. A messy house, empty fridge or poor hygiene are all indications that they may be struggling and could need support.

Home modifications Mobility can decline as people age, and chronic conditions such as arthritis, or injuries and illnesses can make navigating the home challenging.

Take note of any parts of the home that may be causing difficulty such as stairs, an elevated shower or the backyard.

Modifications can be made to aid safety such as safety switches and handles or installing a walk-in shower or a chair lift to replace the stairs.

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club As Christmas time approaches and the accumulation of gifts occur, it reminds me of the abundance of lapidary material we had to choose from in the early days of lapidary. This, of course, was in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Now fossicking is quite different from those early days as many of the deposits have been dug out or closed to fossicking because of housing developments, National Parks and ‘no go’ areas.

The varieties of gemstone material in those days, within a few hours drive of Brisbane, included Petrified Wood, along with Agate from Ipswich, Tweed River, Nerang River, Beerburrum Creek and Redcliffe Peninsula to name a few. Then there was multi-coloured Jasper from Wongawallen, Kenilworth and the deep green Jasper from the Tweed Valley area.

Thunder-eggs were gathered in various sizes from both north and south of Brisbane. A couple of hours north we could dig Thunder-eggs outside Eumundi. To the south the variety of spots were numerous, such as in Perch Creek, Cedar Creek, Canungra and Doon Doon Creek.

If you wanted to make a weekend trip for fossicking, there were places such as Hervey Bay for Uranganite, Proston for Garnets, Murgon District for Agate and Jaspers, and Monto for Blue Agate.

Most of these spots are now just a memory, and we seek our lapidary material from commercial sources or friends who have excess material to dispose of. Commercial mining plays a big part in the supply of lapidary material to rockhounds. It is these people, who have set up a business of mining gemstone material by taking out leases of known deposits, who now supply the lapidary hobbyists with their lapidary material.

Much material is also imported from overseas and sold locally

by Lapidary/Gemstore businesses. Also, with the assistance of online suppliers, material can be purchased from far off countries which was never available in the past.

Our clubrooms will be closed over the festive period for repairs and maintenance and to give the members who open the workshop every week a well earned break.

4. Spoon the mixture into the muffins tray and press down gently. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

6. Pour it into a piping bag while warm and snip the tip off.

7. Turn the crackles upside down and pipe the chocolate on.

8. Finish with a red chocolate button.

Hi-Tech People Parcels In Ferny Grove

Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed - By David Fryer If you thought electric cars and bicycles are new and exciting, you may be surprised to hear that they have been around for a very long time. In fact, both made their first appearance in the late 1800's. However, it all started much earlier.....

Experiments with electric transportation began almost 200 years ago in 1828. Not surprisingly, early creations were primitive and impractical, but in 1859, French physicist Gaston Planté invented a rechargeable lead-acid battery that revolutionised the storage of electrical energy. In 1881, another Frenchman, Camille Faure, improved the design enabling Gustav Trouve to drive a British-made Starley tricycle along the Rue Valois in central Paris, thus becoming the world's first road-going electric vehicle.

The first railway locomotive powered by batteries appeared even earlier. Built in Scotland in 1837 by chemist Robert Davidson, the relatively small seven tonne machine - named Galvani - was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Society of Arts in 1841. The new light-rail systems rolling out across Australia today are essentially a reincarnation of much earlier tramways.

The world's first electric tram appeared near Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1875, and Berlin delivered a similar system in 1881. British inventor, Thomas Parker, introduced batterypowered trams as early as 1890. He also invented the world's first production electric car in 1884, a year before Carl Benz launched the first internal combustion-engine automobile (so called "ICE" cars today).

Technology improved rapidly, and by 1897, London boasted a fleet of electric taxi cabs. A battery-powered car was also the first road vehicle to exceed 100 kph in 1899.

Brisbane's first electric trams appeared in 1897. They were hi-tech creations of their time essentially kick-starting the suburban mass-transit systems that we rely on so heavily today.

You can see a reproduction of the record-breaking Jamais Contente in Europe, but you can ride a genuine 1901 electric tram at the Brisbane Tramway Museum in Ferny Grove. When you climb aboard, just remember that you are entering a hitech people parcel of its time, and spare a thought for the early pioneers who built it. To quote an ancient proverb - Everything old is new again.........

It is that time of year where attention turns to end of year celebrations and work functions. If you are an employer there is no such thing as a free lunch (or dinner), so just be aware of possible Fringe Benefit tax issues.

FBT (Fringe Benefit Tax) Legislation provides that a Christmas Party holds the characteristic’s of a meal entertainment or recreation benefit, and therefore, may be fully or partly subject to a FBT liability. Further to any FBT liability, will your business be entitled to an Income Tax deduction or be able to claim GST credits on the costs incurred?

Under the actual method, a Christmas party held offsite is only subject to FBT on meal entertainment and recreation benefits on the portion of the expenditure that relates to employees and their associates, clients and suppliers are exempt from FBT. Whilst FBT is not payable on the costs associated with clients and suppliers income tax deductions and GST credits are generally not allowed and therefore can only be claimed on the portion of the expenditure subject to FBT. Meals (food and drink, including alcohol) provided to current employees on site during normal work hours are exempt from FBT under the property benefit exemption, however their associates will remain subject to FBT. Another available exemption is the minor and infrequent exemption, where the notional taxable value of a benefit is less than $300, including GST per employee or their associate.

The minor benefit exemption can be applied eliminating any FBT payable on the Christmas Party. In calculating the benefit per person, a per head apportionment can be applied to the total cost of the function to determine if the minor benefit can be applied.

Christmas Cheer at Arana VIEW

A monthly update from the Arana VIEW Club It was great to see numbers slightly up at the November meeting of the Arana VIEW club.

The cent auction went off well with proceeds going towards supporting their Learning for Life students and the Smith Family activities. The guest speaker at the November meeting, Jo Neary, gave members a wonderful insight into the wonderful work the Zephyr Foundation does with supporting children.

The December meeting will take place on Wednesday 2nd December at 10.15am for an 11am start. Arana VIEW would love to see everyone really get into the Christmas Spirit and come dressed in their best Christmas outfit. There will be entertainment by musician and singer Pam Hodgson, so bring along your best singing voices!

The club will hold its first 2021 meeting in February and this meeting is the Annual General Meeting. There are some vacant positions on the committee, so please think about becoming more involved in the club. We tend to start our day with all the negative news hitting us from television, phones, computers and radio. This can (if we let it) set us up for a day of negativity, complaining about this and that and how it effects our lives.

They are told what to say and when to say it.

• Our Politicians will serve their communities to the best of their abilities.

• Our Police and Law Enforcement officials will carry out their duties in the best interest of their community, state or nation.

What a year 2020 has been for everyone!

The Hills Players were excited to end the year on a high, presenting their one and only performance for the year for all their dear supporters. The performance formed part of their 40th anniversary celebrations and it was quite the feat putting together the show with such a short lead up time. They weren’t even sure whether it would be going ahead!

The show consisted of three short plays, a running gag (with a surprise addition from Josh), and of course, four wonderful songs from Helen Weir, which nostalgically transported the audience through the decades. The show was then topped off with a wonderfully whimsical Christmas poem from Ann Johnson and a Christmas Carol - with a Hills Player twist adding some ‘Christmas Cheer’ to the evening.

The Hill Players’ 40th birthday was commemorated with the 'cutting of the cake’ by their longest serving members, Ann Johnson, Faye Fuhlbohm, Margaret Reid, and of course their faithful lighting man, Alan Fuhlbohm. It was such a great night, made more special by the wonderful support of the groups regular and committed patrons.

The Players are forever grateful as they couldn’t do it without them and it wouldn’t have been half as much fun.

The Hills Players would like to extend a special thanks to Tim Mander, State Member for Everton, for his continued support and for the generous donation of the Christmas Hamper that went into the raffle for the night.

Hopefully 2021 will return to normal and The Players can perform the planned play ‘Always a Bridesmaid.’

When the Valley was 'King' at Christmas A monthly update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc

For many long-term Hills District residents, a memory from Christmas time years ago would have been the role played by retail stores in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley in preparing for that special day of the year.

For decades up until the early 1980s, the Valley was 'King' when it came to shopping at Christmas time and celebrating the season. Who remembers McWhirters (built at the turn of the 20th century and taken over by Myer in 1955), T.C. Beirne (built in 1902 and later renamed David Jones) and Waltons? Who also remembers the fabulous Christmas window displays? Or 'Myer on the Rooftop' featuring rides, attractions and an opportunity for children to whisper in Santa's ear what they wanted to find in their stockings on Christmas morning?

All these department stores ceased operating in the Valley by 1988, with the rise of CBD-based shopping and large centres in the suburbs such as Chermside and Indooroopilly.

The buildings which were McWhirters and T.C. Beirne were listed on the Queensland Heritage Registry in 1992 and 2003 respectively.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, It was my Mother’s birthday last week - her 90th. I wanted to do something simple like take her out to a nice restaurant for lunch. My sister Barb, insisted that she cook lunch and have it at her place even though she had just finished giving me a long diatribe on how overwhelmed and exhausted she was because, at present and temporarily, she is looking after her severely impaired mother-in-law. The disaster started with my brother Dave calling just before I left to say he had a rotten hang-over, was not coming and could I pick up some flowers and give them to Mum with his apologies. Mum is very fragile physically and emotionally and I was upset about being dumped in his mess yet again to sort it out and try and make Mum feel OK. By the time we arrived at Barb’s, Mum was upset about Dave, Barb’s short fuse was even shorter and the lunch was just awful. I spent the whole time trying to placate Barb. I know her in these states, she has been physically violent before.

She wanted to have a go at someone and I know that she was trying to work into it being me. Inflammatory and accusatory remarks to all present was coupled with great sighs, moans and beleaguered tone suggesting how much she does for everyone, how difficult it is with all she has to cope with, the present meal effort being no exception. If I suggest she does less it is fuel on the fire and gives her the opportunity to say that I do nothing and it is all up to her. If it is so difficult why does she bother to go on about it so? I patted and soothed, kept my head down low and got out of there with Mum as soon as was politely possible.

Now, Barb wants to host Christmas lunch. I have my son coming from interstate and I want to enjoy him and not be subjected to another disastrous family event and my sister’s tirades, which are even worse when my son is around. My concern is that there will be an even bigger tirade in which my son will be involved if I don’t.

Janelle Dear Janelle, As you have observed, there is a pattern here and it’s abusive.

You mentioned your sister has been physically violent when she doesn’t get her own way and, to keep the peace in some form, you have to do what she wants, say what she wants to hear, and generally you end up being the squashed meat in the family sandwich. This pattern has obviously gone on for years, has not changed and is not likely to unless you make the boundaries clearer.

There are questions to ask yourself; “What am I afraid of if I say or do what I need to, to look after myself and my Mother?” “What do I have to loose?” “What do I have to gain?” It is beneficial to write it down and detail your answers as much as possible. With each answer you come up with, ask yourself, why again. This helps you achieve deeper levels of self understanding and hence solutions.

May I suggest that your son is probably well aware of this family dynamic and might be well pleased to spend time including Christmas lunch one-on-one with you and catch up with his aunt if he wants to by himself. With regard to what I would call your sister’s hero/martyr stance, consider this.

Here she is, her idea that she is a good, kind, compassionate helper/rescuer type person is an essential part of her self validation. But she also displays behaviours that are in direct contradiction to this valued part of self. How does she get over this ambivalence, validate and convince herself she is ok? Well, one way is by letting herself and others know just how much she is doing, how hard it is, what it costs her, God I am wonderful, (more effort equates with more wonderful) while at the same time the behaviour being expressed from the darker side of self are being minimised, denied and justified. Don’t be surprised if this behaviour is easy to recognise because each of us is painted in some part, even if it is one hair’s width, by the same brush. There’s a hero/ martyr in all of us, it is just a matter of how thick the paint is. The paint remover is awareness and a conscious effort to choose to behave differently.

It will coincide with our local Citizenship Ceremony, welcoming members of our community as Australia’s newest citizens. Looking to 2021 2020 has been difficult for all Australians. Jobs have been lost, families have been kept apart and we have seen just how devastating the impact of COVID-19 has been around the world.

There is much to look forward to as we move into 2021.

Encouragingly, 178,800 Australian jobs were added in October, meaning 75% of jobs lost due to COVID have come back. This is great news for locals who are getting back to work, opening businesses and seeing their hours at work increase. I am also seeing more and more ‘staff wanted’ signs outside businesses around our community which fills me with hope for the future.

As you would have seen in the news, there have been recent breakthroughs in the race for a COVID vaccine. Australia is well placed for the rollout of a COVID-19 vaccine, once clinical trials and the regulator has confirmed safety and effectiveness.

Under the Morrison Government’s COVID-19 Vaccine and Treatment Strategy, Australia has secured 134.8 million doses through advance purchasing agreements with four suppliers: AstraZeneca/Oxford, University of Queensland/CSL, Novavax and Pfizer/BioNTech.

In addition, Australia has access to a further 25 million doses through the COVAX facility.

After a tough year, I hope that you can enjoy Christmas with your loved ones as we rest and recharge for 2021.

Suburban Shopfront Activation Grant seeks to match property owners with vacant shopfronts with potential pop up businesses looking to try their hand in a physical space.

Council provides a $2000 grant to each party and provides support through the initial set up.

The second grant is the Suburban Shopfront Improvement Grant aimed at revitalizing suburban shopping precincts and street-level improvements for your shopfront. Property owners or tenants are eligible to apply for this grant. Grants will operate as a matched funding scheme, where Council and the Applicant will contribute to the costs of the shopfront improvements on a dollar-for-dollar amount basis up to a maximum amount of $5000 (ex GST) from Council. Beech Street Bridge – Ferny Grove Opening The Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner will officially open the Beech Street Pedestrian Bridge. The bridge has provided a connection over Cedar Creek between Beech Street and Nelson Place, Ferny Grove. It also provides safety and accessibility for local residents, pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the area, as well as, providing an active travel link to the local schools.

We have faced unprecedented times but through out this year I have been amazed at the tenacity and resilience that comes from love, community and generosity. It has been my privilege to be the member for Ferny Grove for the past five years and it’s my honour to be given the faith to represent you in Queensland Parliament for another term.

I have been humbled by the genuine outpouring of trust and affection many people have shown me during the campaign this year.

Thank you to the electors of Ferny Grove for your support.

Thank you to my staff who work so hard to deliver the outcomes people need. Thank you to the tireless volunteers who have believed in what we are seeking to build.

Further, I was very fortunate to retain my portfolio of Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and add to that Minister for Rural Communities.

Queensland grows the best clean, green produce and fibres in the world and employs hundreds of thousands of people in the agriculture sector. Our Ag industry is the envy of the world and I will never tire of telling everyone that fact.

Queensland is well-placed to deal with the recovery from COVID because of the strong decisions made by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and the dedication and professionalism of our Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young and all whom have served to keep us safe.

My staff and I are now back in the office, delivering the same hard work and dedication we have shown in the past to improve local services and schools and to fight to build a future where opportunity is enlarged for all.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Member of Parliament again this term.

Lions Christmas Cakes

Following my own Christmas tradition by selling Lions Christmas Cakes – with fellow Lion Brett Murphy at Great Western.

As we approach Christmas in a year like none we have ever had before there are still some things which remain constant.

Lions Christmas Cakes is one of those things. Christmas cakes have been a major fundraiser for Lions Clubs since 1965.

Proceeds from the cakes are donated back into the community supporting a number of good causes from blindness prevention and aged care to youth programs and everything in between.

This year the Golden Valley Keperra Lions will be selling cakes at Bob Cassimaty Park at the following times: • Sat. 5th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm • Sun. 6th December – 8.30am to 11.30am • Sun. 6th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm • Sat. 12th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm • Sat. 19th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm • Sun. 20th December – 8.30am to 11.30am • Sun. 20th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm
