by Kathryn Ingram I have spent the last eighteen years of my life working as a high school agriculture teacher and FFA advisor. Part of the FFA Motto is “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn”. Our youth need more than a classroom to prepare them for their future. The students I have worked with that have fully embraced the competitions and activities that the FFA has to offer are the ones that have went on to have successful careers.

The experiences that our junior members had this summer will be remembered for a lifetime. Showing cattle is not just a hobby. It also teaches the “soft” skills that are in high demand in the workplace. Skills such as the ability to communicate, decision making, team-work, problem solving and time management. Julie Chapin does a great job in her President’s comments of outlining all the not so obvious benefits of partipating in the Hereford Junior National.

By Kaylen Baker, AHA Marketing and Communications Coordinator Nestled in the mountains of Sewanee, Tenn., a group of Hereford breeders gathered for fellowship, food and learning opportunities at the 5th annual Hereford on the Mountain event.

This year’s event garnered the attention of more than 135 Hereford breeders from 11 states in the Southeastern region including Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi.

“When I first started as a fieldman for the American Hereford Association, I realized there was not a national event in my territory and my breeders had no chance to interact with each other or AHA staff,” said AHA field representative Tommy Coley. “I started having this event to bring someone from the AHA staff to talk to my breeders about what is going on – but it has grown into much more than that.”

Hereford on the Mountain began in 2012 at a restaurant that served Certified Hereford Beef. However, as word spread about the event, more space was needed.

This year’s event was hosted at the home of Tommy and Kim Coley. The event kicked off with a panel discussion about marketing bulls.

“I was very impressed with the crowd and how they were focused and involved in the panel discussion,” said Tommy Mead, AHA board of director’s member, panel presenter and Georgia Hereford breeder. “We were up there talking about how to market bulls, and the crowd was focused on our discussion and asking questions –

they were there to take something home. Even after the discussion was over, people were coming to ask me questions and continue the discussion. It was evident that people came to learn.”

The panel discussion covered numerous topics, including selling bulls through private treaty, in production and consignment sales and through test stations.

“I thought the Hereford on the Mountain event was awesome,” said Denny Hoffman, panel presenter and Nebraska Hereford breeder. “I don’t know many places you could go and get 130 people from the distance some people came to participate in an event of this nature. We had a diverse panel driven by different marketing methods, but we are all trying to sell Hereford bulls.

AHA president Terri Barber and AHA executive vice president Jack Ward also addressed the group.

“This was my first opportunity to participate in a masterfully planned social marketing event in such a picturesque setting,” Barber said. “Attendees were treated to a dynamic panel discussion, AHA update and CHB dinner. Hereford enthusiasts were enlightened on various marketing options during the interactive session that allowed for plenty of fellowship and enjoyment.”

Aside from food, fellowship and learning, Hereford breeders also raised money for the Brinkley School and Orphanage in India.

“We are involved with a group called Gospel Partners,” Coley said. We have raised about $20,000 over the past five years for this group and that money has built an orphanage and school in India.

There are more than 1,000 kids at the school who are now getting a Christian education. This year we raised about $2,000 through cowchip bingo to donate back to the cause.”

In the future, Coley hopes to involve as many breeders as he can in Hereford on the Mountain.

“This is a great way for Hereford breeders to get together to have social activities without cattle being physically involved,” Coley said.

“They can discuss breeding programs, bulls, marketing and whatever they want on their own. The biggest challenge in the future will be to top the previous year’s event!”

President’s Comments

Back in July, I had the pleasure of attending the entire week of the Hereford Jr. National in Louisville, Kentucky. I want to brag on both the Tennessee junior association and its members and the national association.

So often we only talk about what our national association gets wrong or doesn’t do. This time though they should get our same attention in a positive light. The entire event was amazing in terms of how well organized and well run that it was. Nine hundred plus juniors, Thirty-five states, and fifteen hundred plus head of cattle is no easy task to manage. So, thank you Kentucky and the national association for a job well done.

I could not have been more proud of the Tennessee juniors attending this event. We have a great group of young men and women in our state. I was able to be around and witness our state working together in the cook off, judging contest and many more team events. I also saw friendly competition on show days. As much as they individually wanted to win, they helped out with each other’s calves when it was needed. I think this event helped build friendships within the state and nationwide that will last a lifetime.

Ultimately, isn’t this what it is all about?

In August, our state association held its event. Once again we gathered for a show. This time it was our state show and regional point show. The junior show was Friday night with over sixty head of cattle shown. The open show held Saturday morning had over 100 head shown.

I want to personally thank all those who contributed to this event.

It takes a team working together to put on a show. Everyone that was asked to help did so willingly and with a great attitude. This is just one example of how great our association (both junior and adult) is.

It also proves what we all know, that if we put our dedication and hard work into something it can be accomplished. Thanks again to all “volunteers” it was much appreciated!

Be Careful with Sorghums This Time of Year

The cool temperatures of fall are rapidly approaching. The cool weather is usually good for grasses like tall fescue and orchardgrass.

But sorghums used for forage can be toxic after a frost. The frost causes the release of prussic acid, or cyanide. Small amounts of prussic acid can be highly toxic to cattle. There are several things to know in order to prevent prussic acid poisoning in your livestock.

Which species of grass have this problem? Forages in the Sorghum genus have this problem. The three primary forages that we use in this genus are sorghum x sudangrass hybrids, johnsongrass and forage sorghums. These are all warm-season grass species.

Grasses like tall fescue, orchardgrass, and annual ryegrass do not have the potential to produce prussic acid. Other warm-season species such as bermudagrass, crabgrass, teffgrass and pearl millet also do not have this problem.

What causes the problem? Leaves of these plants contain chemicals called glycosides naturally occurring in the cells. When the plants are stressed, these chemicals break down to release cyanide.

Usually the stress we think of is frost, but it can also occur if the plants are drought stressed.

Does prussic acid break down naturally? The prussic acid will break down over the course of 10 days to two weeks. Because of this, there is no danger of having prussic acid in sorghum x sudangrass or johnsongrass if it has been dried enough to make hay.

Waiting two week before feeding will prevent any problem.

How can I avoid this problem? The best thing to do is avoid

grazing sorghums when there is the potential of frost. As we move into fall, it is best to cut these forage species for hay and avoid any risk of prussic acid poisoning through grazing. If you decide to grazing, wait to graze all of this forage until it is totally brown and dried.

What about tall fescue fields with patches of johnsongrass?

This is often a difficult situation. If there is plenty of tall fescue for cattle to eat, they will avoid consuming johnsongrass in the fall because the tall fescue is much more palatable. Many fields across the southeast have small patches of johnsongrass scattered throughout. But make sure there is plenty of tall fescue growth for cattle to graze. If the johnsongrass begins to cover more than 25-30 percent of the ground, you may want to stockpile this field and graze it after the johnsongrass is totally brown and dead. This will prevent any prussic acid danger.

Whitehawk Ranch and Barnes Herefords hosted a field day for Hereford breeders on July 29, 2017 at their farms in west central Georgia. The event was well attended by registered and commercial breeders from 9 states.

The morning program began at Whitehawk Ranch, Buchanan, Georgia with a welcome by owner Gary Hedrick, County Commissioner, Allen Poole and Georgia Hereford Association President, John Watson.

The attendees then boarded trailers for a pasture tour of the Whitehawk cowherd and a discussion of the intensive grazing program utilized at Whitehawk. Gary Hedrick explained how they utilized the native grasses for summer grazing and inter-seed winter grasses for winter grazing. Gary’s theory is that we are grass farmers and cows are our combines. Several groups of cattle and herd bulls were viewed on the pasture tour as Gary explained about their forage program.

The group enjoyed a CHB hamburger lunch at Whitehawk and then traveled north to Barnes Herefords at Cedartown, Georgia where they were welcomed by owner Roy Barnes and manager, Kevin Akins.

The Whitehawk crew gave a tattooing and DNA collecting demonstration to start the afternoon program. Then everyone enjoyed a demonstration of the use of a “Bud Box” by the Barnes crew at their working facility. Everyone enjoyed a pasture tour at Barnes Herefords as well, seeing several groups of cattle and learning

The main speaker for the afternoon program, Trey Befort, CHB Director of Commercial Marketing, gave an informative and interesting talk about marketing Hereford influenced feeder cattle. The group was then served an outstanding CHB ribeye dinner and followed by a short informative and entertaining presentation by Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture, Gary Black.

The program concluded with the awarding of several door prizes and announcing the winners of the judging contest, which consisted of two classes at each location.

NCHA Field Day 2017

The 2017 North Carolina Hereford Association field day was hosted by John Wheeler’s, Double J Farm at Traphill, NC on August 12, 2017.

The field day had a large crowd from several states and included registered Hereford breeders and many commercial producers.

In the morning attendees divided into three groups and rotated through three stations. The first was to learn about the Double J breeding program on a pasture tour, the second stop highlighted their pasture and forage program and the third stop was to view the working facilities and the cattle they had up close, including herd bulls.

From there everyone moved to the assembly hall at a nearby church were a CHB hamburger lunch was served followed by the afternoon program, all in the comfort of air-conditioning.

Shane Bedwell, AHA Director of Breed Improvement, led off the afternoon program by discussing making genetic selections using EPD’s and the new selection tools we have coming down the road. Tommy Mead, AHA board of directors, discussed marketing Hereford bulls. Seth Church and Channing Gooden, two commercial producers, led a very enlightening discussion about what they look for when they buy Hereford bulls and ways to market Hereford influenced feeder cattle. Bryan Blinson, Executive Director North Carolina Cattlemen’s Association, discussed what the NCBA and the North Carolina Cattlemen are doing to help cattle producers and what producers can do to help them. Tommy Coley, AHA, summarized the day’s programs and presentations. Everyone took something home from this fun and educational day.

Aaron Linville, Double J farm manager, led the pasture tour and discussed the cowherd. Matt Poore, North Carolina State forage specialist had a very interest stop discussing the use of fungus free fescue and bermuda grass in the Double J forage program. The third

Obituary MARTIN, Johnny Moore, 64, of Dyer, Tennessee passed away

on August 25, 2017 with his family by his side at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He was born on March 8, 1953 in Union City, Tennessee to Jack Moore and Julia Ethelene (Fagan) Martin. He was a 1975 graduate of the College of Agriculture at the University of Tennessee, Martin with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. On August 2, 1975, he married Joslyn Kay Sisco of Kenton, Tennessee. Together, they had three daughters.

Johnny was the General Manager of Dyer Grain Company in Dyer, Tennessee for 39 years before continuing his career at Robinson and Belew, Inc. in Sharon, Tennessee. He dedicated his professional career to supporting local farmers and the agriculture community in West Tennessee. Along with memberships and involvement with numerous professional organizations, Johnny was a charter member of the Tennessee Feed and Grain Association and a 24-year board member of the West Tennessee Rail Authority.

Johnny had a lifelong passion for the cattle industry and specifically registered Polled Hereford Cattle. For over 30 years, Johnny

and his family maintain Martin Polled Herefords, a nationally recognized operation of registered cattle that competitively exhibited on the state, regional and national level and sold seedstock and show cattle throughout the region. He actively served the West Tennessee Polled Hereford Association, the Tennessee Hereford Association and the National Hereford Association; he was an avid supporter of youth in all organizations.

Aside from his professional accomplishments, Johnny’s life was centered on his family. He was adored by his wife and daughters.

He loved family dinners and holidays with everyone gathered together. The birth of his first grandchild earlier this year brought he and the entire family great happiness. His legacy of hard work and unconditional love will be carried on by his family.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Kay; daughters Emily Catherine Pope (Justin), Lauren Martin White (Thomas), and Ali Caroline Maitland (Taylor); granddaughter Addison Quinn Pope; brother Jackie Eugene Martin (Gale); and loving nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Appalachian Fair Show Results The AHA Regional Points show hosted by the Appalachian Fair in Gray, Tennessee was held on August 23, 2017. The 51 head show was judged by Loran Wilson of Orleans, Indiana.
