The Tennessee Junior Hereford Association had a great group of juniors June 16-17 in Montgomery, Alabama at the Southeastern Regional Junior Hereford Show. The juniors that represented Tennessee include Foster

The bull show started the weekend of showing for the Tennessee juniors. With many juniors winning classes and even pieces of division. The cow/calf show was next on the agenda with Morgan Riley winning Grand Champion. The Final show on bred and owned day was the heifer show. The Tennessee juniors were very competitive with many heifers winning classes and divisions. The Grand Champion heifer went to Emma Rushton, and Reserve going -Continued on Page 10

The upcoming months will be busy for Tennessee Hereford producers. Field days, shows, and sales will keep everyone on the road.

Despite our tight schedules we need to include time for thinking about our fall forage base and marketing plans.

Grass is the most economical feed available for our cattle. A good forage plan can decrease the need for hay while increasing our returns. Dr. Gary Bates writes about the benefits of stockpiling fescue on page 10.

Not all bulls are destined to be herdsires and we need to take advantage of the niche market the Tennessee Hereford Marketing Program provides. This issue’s spotlight article focuses on the requirements and benefits of participating in the THMP sale.

Finally, the Tennessee Juniors had an amazing Southeastern Regional in Montgomery, Alabama. Be sure to check-out the highlights in our lead story.

The other event to attend is the upcoming THA field day. This year Jeremiah and Candace Malone of JM Cattle Co. have graciously agreed to host the event.

Please mark your calendars for September 16th and enjoy a Saturday in Lawrenceburg TN. There will be plenty of activities for both adults and juniors. This event is still in the planning stages but I’m pretty sure that you won’t go away hungry. A Certified Hereford Beef lunch will be served.

I would like to personally thank all of our current board members. It has been a pleasure to get to know each and every one of you a little bit better. I know and appreciate that the Tennessee Hereford Association is first and foremost in our minds when we have our meetings. Not everyone is willing to take the time and money out of their own pocket to keep this association going. The future is bright for THA!

Summer is in full swing and fall is just around the corner. As many of you know our association will be in the forefront of a couple of upcoming events.

The Tennessee State Hereford Show and AHA Regional Point Show is almost here. The show dates are August 18th and 19th. This year the show has moved to Lebanon, TN and will be held in conjunction with the Wilson Co. Fair. For those who have not been to this facility in a while they have built a new barn that will serve as the show ring. All exhibitors and spectators should enjoy this show with plenty of room in our new accommodations. If this alone isn’t enough to entice you to come support our show, don’t forget that Wilson Co. Fair has been voted the top fair in TN numerous times. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the exhibitors, volunteers and committee members that have worked tirelessly on this show. Since its inception in 1999, the Tennessee Hereford Marketing Program serves as a model for states across the country for utilizing Hereford genetics in a niche feeder calf market. The bi-annual sale hosted by Tennessee Livestock Producers (TLP) in Columbia, provides southeast Hereford producers an opportunity to capitalize on assembling loads of healthy and feed lot ready animals at a premium.

This sale encourages a protocol of 45 day weaning, use of a non-generic wormer and an option of 2 vaccination programs that include one round of shots at weaning and another 14-28 days postweaning. Data shows steers that participate in this program receive a 20% premium over regular weekly auctions. Since we are standing in the shadows of the October opportunity, now is the time to begin making plans.

The sales are held on the third Thursday of October and April. The deadline to order the TLP health form and eartags for the sale is 10 days prior to the sale date.

This year’s fall sale is October 19, 2017. Calves must be weaned by September 5th, and tags ordered before October 9th. The spring 2018 sale will be April 19th.

tockpiling Fescue

by Dr. Gary Bates, Director, University of Tennessee Beef and Forage Center

There are a few things I do very consistently. I wear a hat on sunny days, shave on Saturday night, and write an article about stockpiling tall fescue every fall. The hat prevents sunburn, the shaving is for church, and the stockpiling article is to promote one of the most economical recommendations we have.

Stockpiling is nothing more than saving forage in the field when it is growing for grazing later as needed. The purpose of stockpiling is to delay hay feeding by one to two months, which will decrease the amount of hay needed during the winter.

The guidelines for a good stockpiling program are simple and straight forward.

(1) Graze or clip fescue pastures short in early August.

Make sure that all of the old, mature forage has been removed.

(2) Apply up to 60 pounds of nitrogen per acre in September. This will promote as much new growth as possible. A couple of important points to remember.

- Use ammonium nitrate is possible. If you have to use urea, be sure to get it coated with a urease inhibitor like Agrotain.

- Wait to apply until you have good soil moisture. Without water the tall fescue won’t grow.

(3) Keep cattle off one or two of the pastures, which will

Later in the fall or winter when the forage is needed, it can then be grazed. Nitrogen should be applied to all tall fescue pastures in the fall, even if they will not be stockpiled. Applying nitrogen will help increase fall growth, some which can be grazed early and some which can be stockpiled for later.

Fall stockpiled tall fescue is higher quality than in the spring because it is more leafy, higher in protein and carbohydrates, and lower in fiber. A fall application of nitrogen on fescue will help lengthen the grazing season, and decrease our hay needs and winter feed bill. Hay production and feeding is one of the major expenses of cattle production. Stockpiling fescue can help us decrease the amount of time and money that will be “eaten up” by hay.
