President Jeremiah Malone

Thoughts from the President Greetings Fellow Hereford Breeders! I hope this letter finds you all well! What a wonderful conference we had at the Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association this week. Tennessee Hereford breeders have been represented well this year from our Juniors all over the state. It was nice to be at our booth and see breeders from the state stop by and talk and visit. We also had many potential new breeders stop by and ask about bulls, females, and our Tennessee Hereford Influence Sale. The Tennessee Hereford Influence Sale was a MAJOR SUCCESS!! I would like to take my hat off to the committee for thinking outside the box on this one. They (Gary Preston, Billy Ashe, and Eric Walker) spent a lot of time on this sale to make it better. No one could have exactly predicted the outcome, but it gained by over 50%! Moving the sale back to November and the post card mailer to all non-registered bull buyers increased participation. We also need to mention Johnny Woolfolk, Darrell Ailshie, and many more at Tennessee Livestock Producers who have worked so hard at making this a lucrative sale. The Tennessee Hereford Influence Sale was the most cattle TLP has ever

had in their barn in one day. Keep Selling Them Bulls!! Please tell everyone about the Best Place to market all Baldies. The Tennessee Agribition sale is right around the corner. Be on the lookout for those catalogs. Make sure to attend our meeting on Friday night and enjoy some Certified Hereford Beef! Last year was the best meal we have ever had. So make sure to attend. What a year this has been being President of a Great Association! Kay Coley, Glenda Rickman and Julie Chapman have helped so much all year. This association runs flawlessly and you should be proud of all the hard-working members we have! I never dreamed that my fellow board members would ask me to be President. I hope I have made them and you proud of my leadership this year. It has truly been my pleasure to serve this year! Thanks to everyone!

1st Runner-up National Queen

An Interview with Tennessee Hereford Queen Libby Rushton Libby Rushton of Waverly, Tennessee has been an exemplary ambassador for the Tennessee Hereford industry the past year. Libby is the daughter of Lee & Andrea Rushton. She is a senior this year at Waverly Central High School. Libby has worked tirelessly, attending countless shows and Hereford events across Tennessee and the nation. She also chose to represent Tennessee in the National Queen competition this past October in Kansas City at the American Royal. Libby’s knowledge and dedication to the Hereford breed were rewarded, as she was named First Runner-Up in the National Hereford Queen competition. She was gracious enough to answer the following questions about her experience running for National Hereford Queen. Why did you decide to enter the National competition? When I first became the state queen last March, there was never much of a question of if I was going to run. I’ve always lived by “you never know if you don’t try” and this was an opportunity I definitely wanted to take. I’ve always admired the national queens and thought it would be a great experience no matter the outcome. I also wanted to be able to represent the great state of Tennessee in a different way. Can you give the readers an overview of the process of running for National Queen? The process for selecting the national queen actually has slightly changed just in the past year. We start the process on the very first day at the Sheraton hotel in Kansas City during the

American Royal. We began in the early morning with a written test consisting of 50 questions about the Hereford breed and industry as a whole. Immediately after, each candidate completed an interview with a panel of judges. We spent the next few days attending meetings, talking with fellow Hereford breeders, and working the show ring. It was definitely a busy and tiring couple of days! What was your favorite part of the competition? My favorite part of the competition was probably just getting to know the rest of the girls even more. I enjoyed spending time with each one of them, and know that I will remain friends with many of them. Getting to spend time meeting so many different people from so many different places was an experience I will never forget and I have built relationships and gained experience that will last a lifetime. State Queens are allowed to run for two years, would you be willing to run for National Hereford Queen again? I have thought a lot about this because I enjoyed being queen so much. However, I think that running for the Junior Board may be something that I want to do in the

Highridge Farm Victor Domino Herefords 1571 Lowe Road Crossville, Tennessee 38572

931 248 7272 highridge@frontiernet.net www.highridgeherefords.com near future. The memories I have made while being queen have been amazing, but I’m always looking for new opportunities and want to take a chance at something else. If I choose not to run for queen, I want to encourage other young ladies in our state to take advantage of this life-changing experience. What advice would you give future Tennessee Hereford Queens who would like to run for National Queen? My main piece of advice would be don’t be scared. The thought of running against so many qualified young women and getting put in front of quite a few people with a sparkly tiara and eye-catching sash can be very nerve-wracking, but you do not want to miss your chance. Just remember you will never know if you don’t try! As long as you take the time to prepare, you will be successful, whether you come home with the crown or not. It’s an amazing experience that has taught me how to advocate for the industry on a whole different level.

Lastly, I just want to say a sincere Thank You to every single person who has supported me throughout this experience. I couldn’t be more appreciative of all the kind words and encouragement from numerous Tennessee Hereford breeders, the Hereford Women of Tennessee, and the National Hereford Women.

The Tennessee Hereford Queen program is sponored by the Hereford Women of Tennessee. Contact Joyce Ashe ((731) 610-5346) for more information.

Hereford breeders from Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama that chose to participate in the 21st Annual Fall THMP were rewarded with some of the highest prices paid anywhere across the state. This has been the goal since the first sale of trying to find a way to reduce or eliminate those frustrating discounts that were being placed on Hereford calves selling at auctions. The average weekly price for calves selling across the state, as determined by the USDA Market News, has always been the benchmark to determine the level of success which the marketing efforts were having toward eliminating those discounts. The 2019 sale saw every weight group, except one, not only eliminate those discounts, but return a premium above the state average price to consignors. Those premiums were topped by the $100 above market bonus offered for a load of 7 weight heifers.

One consignor sold black mates to his Hereford calves the same week at a large auction market. After getting both checks, he summed it up simply as “the Herefords did good!”. The ability to group the 800 steers and heifers into uniform semi-truck load lots attracted lots of buyer attention and demand. Buyer support was strong throughout the sale with 10 to 12 different buyers bidding on various groups. The next THMP sale is scheduled for April 15, 2020..

Tennessee Hereford Field Day

Rogan Farms Hosts 2019 THA Field Day Mike and Carol Rogan of Rogan Hereford Farm in Rogersville, Tennessee hosted the annual Tennessee Hereford Field Day on September 28, 2019. The event was attended by a large crowd representing multiple facets of the cattle industry. The morning started off with tours of the farm. The Rogan Farm is recognized as a century farm with a rich history. Visitors were encouraged to explore the show barn and the paddocks featuring quality Hereford bulls and females. Wagon tours gave participants a glimpse of the cowherd along with amazing views of the East Tennessee landscape. The brisket luncheon featured an educational talk by Don Haden of Vigortone®. Mr. Haden spoke about the variety of supplements available from Vigortone® and pointed out local

sources of these products. Mike Rogan gave a testimonial about the mineral products, stating that he has had minimal problems with pinkeye since switching to Vigortone® mineral. The group finished the day by participating in a cattle judging competition. The competition consisted of classes of open heifers and yearling bulls. The winner of the contest was Rachel Rogers. The Tennessee Hereford Association greatly appreciates the Rogan family for providing an informative and entertaining day. Thank you for this opportunity for fellowship with our Hereford family.

Golden Breeder Award

Jackson Farms recognized as Golden Breeder by AHA The American Hereford Association recognized thirteen members for being Hereford breeders for fifty years. Jackson Farms from White House, Tennessee was among those honored as a Golden Breeder at the AHA annual meeting this past October. Jackson Farms has been operating for over 200 years. The farm was originally settled by Colonel Gaines Winfield around the year 1800. W.M. Jackson married his daughter Susan Gaines. The farm has been owned and operated by the Jackson family since 1834. Billy and his wife of forty-five years, Trudy are currently the matriachs of Jackson Farms. Billy is the first generation of Jackson’s to become involved in the Hereford industry. Past generations have focused on tobacco, chickens, and commercial cattle. Billy was introduced to Hereford cattle with the purchase of a registered heifer for a 4-H project in 1960. This heifer went on to

Trudy and Billy Jackson with “Cotton”.

produce 14 calves and started Billy’s appreciation of Hereford cattle. The farm continued to be a commercial operation until 1981, when the decision was made to come to develop a registered Hereford herd. By 1983 the herd consisted entirely of registered Herefords. Billy’s focus has always been on producing functional cattle with sound genetics that are profit focused. Billy and Trudy have three adult children, Cory, Brian, and Rachel. Cory and his family currently live and work on the farm. Jackson Farms will carry on with the next generation, continuing a cherished family tradition. Congratulations to this Tennessee family that has stood the test of time.
