President’s Comments by Jeremiah Malone, THA President What a wet, hot and fast summer it has been all across Tennessee. Grass is growing and Hereford cattle are looking great. I have visited with several breeders and there are wonderful things going on all over the state. Our Juniors have represented us well in Denver at the Hereford Junior Nationals. Out of 1800+ head from all over the country, our Juniors did not finish lower than 4th in class. Tennessee is one of the strongest states in the past few years at National shows. We are very proud of all who work hard all year long to be competitive. The Tennessee State Hereford show is right around the corner on August 16 and 17 in Lebanon, Tennessee. I encourage everyone to come and hangout. It’s always a great time to visit new breeders, juniors, and meet people walking around who are looking to get in the Hereford business. Don’t forget about the THA field day on September 21, in Rogersville. Mike Rogan is hosting us this year. We really appreciate the Rogan’s for opening up their farm to us. He has always been a great supporter of the THA and the TJHA. I’m looking forward to seeing their operation in person. After careful consideration the Committee on the TN Hereford Influence Sale made the recommendation to move the fall sale back a few weeks to Nov 6, 2019. The board approved this move to help spring breeders get more calves weaned and ready for the sale. Contact us for more information.

I hope everyone is enjoying this Tennessee Hereford Association directory edition. I encourage you to make sure your membership is paid up so you make the next directory. This directory issue not only goes to our regular mailing list, but also to member and nonmember Hereford bull and female buyers across the state. I encourage you to get your name out there so you can expand your base. In closing, I would like to take my hat off to your THA committee and board members who are working so hard to make this Association run like a well-oiled machine. I’ve never seen harder working people who do such a great job. They love this association and we need to take time to thank them for all they do.

Q & A with the 2019 Tennessee Hereford Queen, Libby Rushton Can you tell us a little about your background? I was born and raised on a farm in Waverly Tennessee where we have a Hereford cattle and row crop operation. I am a senior at Waverly Central High School. This summer I had the opportunity to spend a month at UT Martin for Agricultural Sciences where I had the opportunity to take Ag classes and travel around to various operations across Tennessee learning about the industry. I am very involved in FFA, Junior Civitan, Student Council, Beta Club, National Technical Honors Society and I am a member of the Lady Tigers Volleyball Team. Outside of school, I am very involved in my church’s youth group, the Humphreys County Beef Club.

Describe your involvement with the Hereford Industry? I got involved in the Hereford industry about 11 years ago when my sister got her first Hereford heifer. She fell in love with the easy temperament of Herefords, but as the years have passed, we have fallen in love with the people involved in this breed. I am extremely thankful for our industry and become more and more passionate about it every day. During my time in the Hereford Association I have held the titles of Middle Tn director, Reporter, and currently hold the President position. I have been to Junior Nationals every year since 2012 and every year is a new, amazing experience that I always look forward to. Last year, I also had the opportunity to attend Faces of Leadership. I’ve always loved to travel and meet new people, so getting the chance to do both while learning more about agriculture was an amazing experience.

What is your favorite Hereford memory? My favorite Hereford memory was at my first junior nationals. My sister and I were the only two juniors from Tennessee, and

my family had no idea what to expect unloading our trailer the first day. As the week went on, I met so many new people, some of which are still some of my best friends. By the end of the week, my family had grown so much closer and it made me realize how much I truly loved to show.

What do you hope to accomplish as the THA Queen?

2019 THA Queen Libby Rushton

I’ve always remembered the queens as the smiling face waiting at the end of the ring, no matter how you placed. Since Tennessee hasn’t had a queen in a couple of years I hope that I can be that smiling face for everyone, and also spark interest along teenage girls with this amazing opportunity they have to be involved in a different way. I also want to be able to represent the youth involved in the Hereford breed across our state.

What are your future plans? After High school, I hope to attend UT Martin and receive a degree in Ag Business, and after, possibly attend law school. I hope to use my degree to represent agriculture in the political arena in some way. I hope to always stick to a career in agriculture to give back to the industry that has shaped me into who I am.

THMP Sends Consignors Home With Extra Money in Their Pockets by John Woolfolk Once again those participating in the THMP went home smiling and very happy that they had been a part of the 20 year old program that was designed to improve marketing options for Herefords. The Tennessee Hereford Marketing Program’s annual spring sale was April 23rd at the Tennessee Livestock Producers barn in Columbia.

This was the largest spring sale to date with over 250 calves selling. Consignors participating in the sale were from TN, AL, IL & MS. A good group of buyers were actively bidding on all lots, but buyer demand was especially strong for the heavier cattle. TLP manager, Darrell Ailshie, commended the breeders for the high quality of the Hereford cattle consigned to the sale and also for their continuing efforts to work together to market their cattle. * Average price reported by USDA for all TN auction sales on same week as THMP. Herefords selling without health information and in small lots or as singles will very, rarely bring the average reported price. ** This is average premium for Hereford calves sold compared to weekly average of all calves sold state wide. True premium compared to other Hereford calves selling in local barns would be significantly higher. Premiums shown for 700 and 800 pound yearlings, once again reflect the benefits of not selling right off the cow, but rather putting calves through a backgrounding phase. THE NEXT THMP SALE WILL BE NOVEMBER 6, 2019

2019 Tennessee Hereford Association Family of the Year by Kathryn Ingram, Stan Webster, Bob Coley

The Rogan family of Rogersville, Tennessee was chosen as the 2019 Tennessee Hereford Association Family of the Year. The Rogan family includes Mike, his wife Carol, daughter Rachel, sonin-law Patton Rogers, and his sister Ada.

pion Heifer at the 2011 Junior National Hereford Show and the 2012 NAILE Hereford Bull National Champion, RF Endurance 1301 ET. The farm continues to compete at local and national shows each year, while consigning top heifers and bulls to multiple sales across the southeast. Mike says the biggest reward for being involved in the Hereford industry are the people and relationships he has cultivated over the years. He feels that the breeders of Hereford cattle are the best in the cattle industry. Rogan Farms will host this year’s Tennessee Hereford Field Day on September 21, 2019. Mike and the family have planned an educational and fun day for their fellow cattleman. The field day will be sponsored in part by Vigortone. The festivities will begin at 10:00 AM EST.

From left to right: Stan Webster, Carol, Mike, Rachel, and Patton. Mike currently serves as the Vice President of the Tennessee Hereford Association. He is a long time THA board member, and served on the committee that organized the merging of the Tennessee Polled Hereford and Tennessee Hereford Associations in 2014. Mike is also active in the East Tennessee Polled Hereford Association and enjoys being involved in many other local and state cattlemen and agricultural organizations.

Mike and his wife are both pharmacists. They have owned and operated Churchill Drug Store for many years in East Tennessee. They hope to retire later on this year to focus on their growing family and the farm. Rogan Farms’ continued goal is to improve the cow herd year by year and offer these improved genetics to Hereford and commercial breeders. Congratulations to the Mike Rogan family for being named the family of the year. Thank you for your dedication to and support of the Hereford Industry.

Rogan Farms was established in 1919 by Mike’s Grandfather F.H. Rogan. This Century farm was built on family values, hard work, and dedication. These cornerstones have continued with each generation. Mike is committed to preserving the farm’s onehundred-year legacy for generations to come. Rogan Farms is committed to excellence in cattle breeding and showing. Mike started showing Hereford cattle in 1978. A decision that focused the farm on producing cattle that excelled not only phenotypically, but also contained strong genetic potential. This dedication has made Rogan Farms among the leading Hereford producers in the industry. Mike bred the Reserve Cham-
