President’s

The day after the Southdown Board voted to go slick sheared, I told Bonnie that we could now start our Southdown flock. I knew great things were going to happen to this breed by doing this. Southdowns are now, and boy have they been winning Supreme Champions all over the nation. They are selling at high prices and have the most exhibitors and sheep at all the junior shows.

The key now is to maintain the popularity and enthusiasm of the Southdown Breed. We survived the spider gene, hairy lamb, and are working on the dwarf gene. The Board is always looking forward to keep advancing Southdowns.

I also would like to thank Ann Fry for accepting the position of our breed Secretary. She has stepped in to fill some really big shoes and is doing a fantastic job. Thanks for all you are doing, Ann.

One last thing as we head to Louisville, I’d like for you to keep something in mind. Don’t dwell about who places at the top of the line or down the line. Remember the friends you have made and the fun you had. Years from now very few remember who placed at the top, but you never forget the friendships made and the good times.

Jim Davis

ASBA Board of Directors, President

Letter from the EDITOR

As I write this, I’m midway through the sprint from August to Louisville - a stretch of time every year where I start to lose track of what day it is or what state I’m in! The fun part, though, is that I’ve also gotten to see friends from all over the coun try and as always, make lots of memories. Since the Spring Journal, I’ve seen many of you at the National Sale & Spring Kickoff, Sedalia, All-American Junior Show, North East Youth Sheep Show, Youth Sheep Expo, Minnesota State Fair, Big E, and Keystone Live stock Expo. This year in particular with AAJS being held in Massachusetts and staying to judge NEYSS, I got to meet a lot of east coast breeders that I don’t always get to spend a lot of time with - and again in September at Big E!

I hope you all have a great Louisville, followed by a successful lambing season and happy holidays. Thinking ahead, in 2023 we’ll be doing an earlier version of the Spring Journal, in time to advertise for online sales. Keep this in mind when thinking of your marketing for your spring sales!

As always, I send a huge thank you to those that support the Journal by advertising, and those that have offered me kind words regarding the design of the Journal. I appreciate it more than you know!

MESSAGE
5FALL 2022 SOUTHDOWN JOURNAL

It has been a tremendous year for the Southdown breed. I heard several re ports of Southdown ewes and rams bringing big banners home from local and state fairs. We were well represented at the All-American Junior Show with Kailen Smerchek’s Champion Southdown Ewe being named the first ever Supreme Ewe Overall. Southdowns also topped the number of entries among all the breeds. We also made some changes on the business side of the organization, this year. With Katherine’s help, we created an online registration form that has been very popular. The accounting system was moved online which allows mem bers to receive electronic invoices and make digital payments.

I had a great first year in my new role. The transition wouldn’t have gone as smoothly without a lot of help. It takes a high-caliber team to maintain the rep utation this association has established. I want to thank some of the members of that team.

First, to Katherine and Stephanie. As you will see in this Journal, Katherine has a remarkable talent for creating graphics and content to communicate with our members. Stephanie has spearheaded the rejuvenation of the Junior Board and oversaw an excellent Classic this summer. Thank you, ladies, for the hard work you put in to keep things running efficiently and successfully.

The Board of Directors and committee members are also valuable members of the team. They put in many hours making policy decisions and creating new programs for our members. The board members do their best to keep the association moving forward while preserving the history and integrity associated with the South down breed.

The final team members I want to thank are the breeders, junior members, and parents. You are the heart of our association. Thank you for bringing us new ideas and letting us know when it is time for a change. Thank you for investing in the youth and encouraging them to participate in our programs. Thank you for the hours you put in volunteering to make sure our shows and events run smoothly. Thank you for sharing your passion for breeding purebred Southdown sheep. Thank you for making this not just an association, but a family.

REMEMBRANCE - JIM HOWARD

James “Jim” Hyland Howard, D.V.M, 80, of Wooster passed away July 10, 2022, at West View Healthy Living. He was born October 18, 1941, in Plymouth, IN, to Charles O. and Ethelyn Steelman Howard. He married Susan “Sue” Clough on July 27, 1962. She survives.

Growing up and spending his early years on a small family farm in rural Indiana, Jim knew at a very early age he wanted to be a veterinarian. He graduated from Iowa State University in Ames with a D.V.M. in 1965. Upon graduation, he and Sue moved to southern California where he was an associate with a small animal practice in Torrance, California.

In 1970, wanting to establish his own practice, Jim and Sue moved to Wooster and established Cleveland Road Animal Hospital. Starting as a solo practitioner, the practice initially treated both large and small animals. As the it grew, associates were added, and the practice evolved into a small animal hospital. For nearly forty years he was “Doc” to many, treating the community’s four-legged family members until his retirement in 2007.

Jim and his family raised, exhibited, and sold Southdown sheep, under the ban ner of A Long Way From L.A. Southdowns. The sheep were exhibited for many years at the Wayne County Fair, Ohio State Fair, and the North American Interna tional. Sheep were sold across the country, as well as Canada and Central Amer ica. Jim was past president of both American Southdown Breeders Association and Ohio Southdown Breeders Association. The flock was dispersed in 2003 and sold Gary Kwisnek of Scenic View Farms, Clarksburg, PA.

Jim enjoyed playing basketball with friends during the noon hour at the College of Wooster. He loved watching sports, gardening with his wife Sue and visiting with family and friends. Jim was also an active supporter of the Friends of Ohio Barns, recording and mapping existing old bank barns throughout the county. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his children Charles C. Howard of Cincin nati, Anne S. (Hakan Bergon) Howard of Alexandria, VA, and Katherine N. (Jean) Arnold of Athens, GA; granddaughter Leila Arnold; siblings Lucy Ann Strait of Boulder, CO, Nancy Sue Reed of Hamilton, IN, and Paul F. (Christine) Howard of Hilton Head, SC.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends will be received, Saturday July 16, from 5-7 PM at McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Wayne County Humane Society, 1161 Mechanicsburg Rd., Wooster, OH 44691; Westview Healthy Living Staff Education Fund, 1715 Mechanicsburg Rd., Wooster, OH 44691; Wooster Community Hospital c/o Greatness Need Fund, 1761 Beall Ave., Wooster, OH 44691; or to Cleveland Clin ic Foundation Fund, 9500 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44195.

The family wishes to extend its thanks to the staff at Westview Healthy Living and Dr. John Miller. And to all those who entrusted their animals to his care.

Age: 11 years old

Hometown: Taylorville, Illinois

Grade/Education Plans:

6th grade - Attend a 4 year University

Career Goal:

I would like to work with animals, possible in the Veterinary science field.

How did you get started showing sheep, and specifically Southdowns?

I guess I was born into it. My parents bought my first ewe at Sedalia when I was two months old. They thought the Montadales that they were raising would be too big for me.

What has been your favorite part of being involved with Southdowns and the sheep industry in general?

All the friendships that I have made and will continue to make all over the US. I al ways look forward to hanging out with my sheep friends at the shows. I enjoy being in the barns because no one is a stranger.

What’s your favorite livestock show of the year?

My favorite show is NAILE, because it is the biggest show of the year and I look for ward to seeing everyone after being back in school. Also showing on the green shavings is pretty cool too.

Junior

What is your favorite sheep that you’ve shown so far?

My favorite sheep that I have shown is a ewe that I named Sprinkles. She was in our show string in 2020-2021. She won her class at the state fair and livestock expo, and was third at NAILE as a year ling. Her mom passed away two days af ter she was born and since I was home because of the first quarantine for Covid, I took care of her. She is more like a pet at our house than the dogs sometimes.

What are some of your other hobbies outside of sheep?

Some of the other things I enjoy doing are playing basketball, volleyball and softball. I’m also on our county livestock judging team and a 4-H mem ber.

What’s something that “sheep people” would be surprised to learn about you?

I keep a binder of my sheep that have passed away. I also take a picture of every sheep we sell before they leave the farm. Sometimes I have to stop dad and mom from loading the trailer to get the picture.

What do you consider your proudest achievement?

My proudest achievement was when I won overall Champion Ewe at the Classic this year with my ewe “Betsy,” she’s fun to show and my dad gets kinda excit ed when we’re in the ring.

Grab a partner for team showmanship - who’s with you?

Without a doubt (my big brother) Tan ner Beckmier, he’s my favorite partner in the show ring.

Catching up WITH GARY & KAREN JENNINGS

2021 SPIRIT OF THE BREED WINNER: KAREN JENNINGS

Last fall at NAILE, we saw the retirement of Gary Jennings as Executive Secretary with the pass ing of the torch to our new secretary, Ann Fry. The ASBA also honored the Jennings family in another way – by recognizing Karen Jennings as the 2022 Spir it of the Breed winner. While breeders often interact ed with Gary, there is a tremendous appreciation for Karen’s behind the scenes work and support for the Southdown breed. I caught up with both Gary and Karen to reflect on their path to the ASBA, their experi ence during Gary’s time as Secretary, and what they’re up to now.

Gary and Karen met while Gary was a graduate stu dent and meats judging coach and Karen was an undergraduate at Colorado State University. Karen’s grandfather raised some sheep, but primarily she grew up on a cattle ranch in Colorado. After they married, Gary and Karen ultimately moved to Texas. While they started out with Suffolks, fate intervened in 1984 when on their oldest daughter Moriah’s first birthday, she was gifted a Southdown ewe from Gary’s brother.

“We loved that ewe and it just flourished,” explained Gary.

From there, they began dabbling with a few more Southdowns. The Jennings purchased some ewes from CJ Robinson, liked what they saw in the breed, and have had Southdowns ever since.

In 1989, Gary interviewed for the Secretary position following the retirement of Florence Strouse. When asked what interested him in the position, Gary explained that he wanted to be a part of the livestock industry and had a great interest in Southdown sheep – and, to put it succinctly:

“I really think it was a dream job. I think it was a job that I had been looking for all my life.”

At the beginning of Gary’s tenure, the workings of the Association looked differently than they do today. The ASBA office operated with one small typewriter and files upon files of papers and pedigrees. Every sheep received a metal ear tag and lineage was manually re searched to make sure pedigrees were correct. Today, registration papers are printed with five generation pedigrees, with everything being computerized – Gary described the computerization of the Asso ciation as the biggest evolution during his time as Secretary.

During these years, Karen was working behind the scenes at home, home schooling their four kids (Moriah, Heather, Aaron, and Gabe) for 25 years. The Jennings continued to raise Southdowns, which meant there was always time to be spent at the ranch. Kar en also helped out in the office through the years and was a support system for Gary.

16 FALL 2022 SOUTHDOWN JOURNAL

While many of us grew up with Gary as the face of the ASBA, in the same breath many would say they can re member Karen’s warm presence at many Southdown events over the years, welcoming junior exhibitors and helping out in any way she could. She was a consistent presence at many national junior shows and Louisville. Karen’s love for teaching and kids extended into these events, where she helped run the skillathon, assisted in the ring, and enjoyed helping wherever she was needed.

Beyond the quality and versatility of the sheep, both Gary and Karen are insistent that what truly makes Southdowns unique are the breeders involved, their commitment to good livestock, and the friendships throughout the country.

“Developing the friendships with people who understood where we were coming from – the camaraderie with the breeders and their vision of improving the breed and agriculture in gen eral,” said Karen.

Today, the Jennings still run sheep and some cattle on their ranch in Texas. Their son Aaron works mostly with the Southdowns, and Gary enjoys working together with him. Karen now works part time for AgriLife Ex tension. Most importantly, retirement from the ASBA has also afforded Gary and Karen more time with their nine – soon to be ten! – grandchildren. By all accounts, they are staying busy and active.

Looking back on his time serving the ASBA, while Gary always acknowledged the history of the breed, once within the organization he came to appreciate even more the abundant history of the Association.

“We’re the oldest breed association in North America. To realize the heritage and tradition and the history of the Southdown breed – over time, you appreciate it more.”

When asked what he is most proud of during his time as Secretary, Gary describes the progress of the sheep themselves and their respect in the show ring.

“The breed has evolved into a highly respected breed and in competition for Supreme Champions at every show,” Gary explained.

“When a Southdown walks into the ring, it’s in competition at a breeding show for Supreme no matter if you’re in California or at the Big E. The breed has evolved into a very competi tive breed that has respect from individuals no matter what breed they raise.”

The Association owes a tremendous amount of grat itude to the Jennings for all they have done for the ASBA over the last 32 years – we thank them for their time and commitment to the Southdown breed, and know they have made a mark on Southdown history.

The return to having an AJSA Junior Board of Directors has been met with a lot of enthusiasm and our young board members have started the first year off strong!

Beginning at the National Sale and Spring Kickoff show, the Junior Board members handed out free sub sand wiches to all the junior members in attendance to get to know them better. Continuing to build on that at the Classic, we began a mentorship program and paired up new families with Junior Board members. Our Junior Board also planned and executed a very fun cornhole tournament and a new “Blast from the Past” event for the more mature showmen. After a lot of positive feedback, we continued the Junior Board mentorship at All-American. We also served 500 root beer floats to exhibitors there!

At NAILE, the Junior Board has planned our first ever Public Speaking Contest. You can find details on our web site or Facebook page. They will also be helping run our junior meeting during the membership meeting on Saturday night.

Each term served will be two years, with the goal being four members going off the board each year and four new ones joining. In January, we will open applications for new board members to join.

We encourage you to reach out to the junior board members and share any thoughts or ideas that you have. We can’t wait to see what year two brings!

How did you get started showing sheep, and specifically Southdowns? My brother started showing sheep and I helped him until I was old enough to show on my own. We still help each other today.

What has been your favorite part of being involved with Southdowns and the sheep industry in general?

I love our Southdowns and all the great people I’ve met along the way. Some of my best friends are showmen and I am always excited when we get to hang out again.

What’s your favorite livestock show of the year?

I love Louisville because after our State Fair we get busy with school stuff and when Louisville comes around it’s our last chance to show off our hard work for the year. I also get very excited to see everyone again that I haven’t gotten to see in several months.

What is your favorite sheep that you’ve shown so far?

My favorite sheep doesn’t have a name. We just call her by her tag number which is 1701. She was the first sheep I won showmanship at Louisville with, and she still is a sweetheart. Plus, she has really nice babies that I get to show.

What are some of your other hobbies outside of sheep?

I play basketball, volleyball, student council, choir, club volleyball, 4-H and track and field.

Clay SCHOEN

Jeromesville, OH

Age: 21

Hometown: Jeromesville, Ohio

Grade/Education Plans:

I am a Senior at the University of Findlay

Majoring in Animal Science. I am currently in the process of applying to vet school.

Career Goal: Large Animal Veterinarian

How did you get started showing sheep, and specifically Southdowns?

Unlike many others, I was not born into a sheep family. Instead, I bought my first Southdown ewe when I was 10 years old and have been growing my flock ever since.

What has been your favorite part of being involved with Southdowns and the sheep industry in general?

My favorite part is the people that I have met along the way. I have been able to make some of my best friends showing and raising sheep, as well as meet some tremen dous breeders that have helped me get to where I am today.

What’s your favorite livestock show of the year?

I really enjoy NAILE, the cool weather as well as the feeling of competing on a na tional stage are things that I really enjoy. I also like the size of the show and getting to see everyone from across the country.

44 FALL 2022 SOUTHDOWN JOURNAL

Junior

What is your favorite sheep that you’ve shown so far?

I really enjoy showing yearling ewes, they are so broke that it makes my job easy as a showman.

What are some of your other hobbies outside of sheep?

I enjoy waterfowl hunting, and training my dogs.

What’s something that “sheep people” would be surprised to learn about you?

The scar on my head is from a sea turtle bite.

What do you consider your proudest achievement?

My proudest achievement would be breeding the Su preme Champion Ram at the Ohio State Fair in 2021. I was proud of brother for the way he showed him and I was proud of my family for working together for all these years and to finally have it pay off in the show ring.

Grab a partner for team showmanshipwho’s with you?

Either one of my friends Linsey or Sidney, I’ve been showing with them for years and I can trust that they can get the job done.

Favorite food: Lamb chops

Favorite song or singer: Ian Munsick
