Tenth annual dinner to benefit the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston

April 24, 2023 | Seaport Hotel, Boston | 5:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.

The Sis ters of St. Joseph of Boston

Celebrate the “ De ar Neighbor ”

Letter from our President

Welcome to Living the Dream 2023!

Our dinner this year celebrates the 150th anniversary of Sisters of St. Joseph presence in Boston. As we look back and recall the blessings, joys and challenges of the last 150 years, we celebrate the sisters who have preceded us, ordinary women of faith, strength, resolve, endurance and dedication filled with the Holy Spirit upon whose shoulders we build and, who selflessly gave so much to the people of Boston.

This anniversary year our theme is “Unifying love flares.” It flares now as it did in 1873 when Sisters arrived in Boston and four days later began our first educational ministry. It flares in people like Joe Nolan our “Dear Neighbor” awardee, President and CEO of Eversource who still finds time for a life of faith and charitable work. It flares in Beth Sheehan, CSJ associate, and our featured speaker. It flares in the hearts of our hard-working committee whose generosity of time and commitment has made this evening possible. Finally, my friends it flares in YOU!

The proceeds from this event will provide vital support for our work in congregational ministries and help provide for our retired sisters. I hope you take this opportunity to connect with sisters, and friends new and old. Enjoy your dinner, the program, and our video during which you will be introduced to twelve current CSJs who share their reflections and memories of life as sisters.

Thank you to all who support us with your gifts, pray for us, volunteer with us, work with us, attend our programs and events. We count on you to share the flaring of unifying love with those you encounter because…the flare burns brightly in you!

As Karen Holmes Ward, our Emcee leads you through this evening’s program, enjoy and know that you remain in our prayers always.

With gratitude to all,

WELCOME TO OUR CELEBRATION OF

150 years in Boston

This year marks the 150th anniversary of presence and service of the Sisters of St. Joseph among the people of Boston. First, we want to say thank you for the many ways you have journeyed with us and continue to support us in our mission of unifying love.

From the day Sister Regis Casserly and her three companions traveled from New York and arrived in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston on October 2, 1873, through the many challenges and opportunities that brought us to where we are today, you have partnered with us.

We came in response to an invitation to educate a growing population of Catholic immigrants who were not welcome in the public schools at the time. During these 150 years, we have continued to respond to changing needs and changing times. In the process, we have educated thousands of people in more than 130 educational institutions, ministered in over 30 health care ministries, and participated in more than 85 service ministries within the Archdiocese of Boston. In turn, we have also learned from you and benefited by your presence in our lives. Clearly, we have touched one another’s lives in countless ways. Imagine the impact! Imagine our gratitude!

Our 150th logo is designed as a graphic representation of our unfolding which dates from our origins in 17th century France and actually deeper into history to the original impulse of God’s creation of the universe. And our tagline: Unifying Love Flares…! If you’re asking, what does this mean, we invite you to

ask, what does this mean for me and for others who partner with the Sisters of St. Joseph?

We are a community whose mission is to realize the prayer of Christ: that all may be one with God and with one another. Our growth is about responding with courage in impossible situations; embracing anything of which a woman is capable; witnessing in challenging times; standing with the marginalized in the struggle for justice; and doing all with a contemplative spirit.

Therefore, our 150 years in Boston is a celebration of and for all who have been a part of this journey. We celebrate founders whose original impulse of unifying love brings us to this day as well as sisters, associates, agrégées, and you, our partners in mission, who continue this impulse as it flares among and beyond us.

Dear Neighbor Award Honoree Joe Nolan

This award is given to those outstanding people whose values and accomplishments honor the spirit and charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston by serving “The Dear Neighbor without Distinction.”

Joseph R. Nolan, Jr. is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Eversource Energy, New England’s largest utility. Eversource serves approximately 4.4 million electric, natural gas and water customers across Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Joe joined Eversource in 1985 and served in various customer service and government affairs positions before becoming Vice President of Government Affairs in 1999. In this role, Joe was instrumental in obtaining support for company policies and positions from the state legislature, federal agencies and the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Energy. Joe also successfully directed the internal and external communications of electric restructuring and the sale of generating plants.

He subsequently served as Senior Vice President, Customer & Corporate Relations, then as Executive Vice President, Business Strategy, Customer Care & Corporate Relations. Joe oversaw Eversource’s innovative strategic investments in offshore wind, battery storage, electric vehicles, and other technology. In 2015, Joe also led the company’s comprehensive brand change strategy and three-state rollout, bringing six operating companies together as one customer-facing brand: Eversource.

In addition to his Eversource responsibilities, Joe serves on the Chairman’s Council of Boston Children’s Hospital; on the boards of directors of the New England Council, Sancta Maria Skilled Nursing Facility, the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, the Camp Harbor View Foundation and the Long Island Association; and the advisory board of Intercontinental Real Estate Corporation. Joe is also active in the communications and government relations committees of the Edison Electric Institute and the American Gas Association.

Joe holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, and a bachelor’s degree in communications from Boston College. Joe and his wife Therese reside in Belmont, Massachusetts, with their four daughters, Olivia, Hannah, Isabelle and Claudia.

Testimonial Speaker

Beth Sheehan, CSJA

Beth has lived her entire life in Milton, Massachusetts. She is the third child of five siblings. She has always lived with her parents and when the time came, she cared for them until their passing, which was a blessing and honor.

Beth grew up enriched by Catholic schools, attending Saint Agatha School, Milton, Archbishop Williams, Braintree, and Regis College, Weston. Her education inspired her occupation; she inevitably found herself drawn to academia.

Beth has been teaching for 36 years, 35 of which have been in Catholic schools in the inner city of Boston. She spent her first year teaching preschool in a daycare setting in the South End of Boston. This wonderful experience introduced her to many cultures which assisted in her future as a teacher and a person. God then sent her to Saint Angela School in Mattapan for 20 years. Saint Angela’s became the Mattapan Campus of Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy where she spent ten more years. She loved her years in Mattapan.

When the Mattapan Campus was consolidated into the other three Saint John Paul II campuses, she was placed at the SJPII Lower Mills Campus which used to be the former Saint Gregory School, which is where she has been teaching for the past five years. Thirty-five years of teaching Grade Two has been the perfect placement for her. Preparing the students for the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion has been so rewarding. She cannot imagine teaching anywhere else. She has also been teaching religious education for the past two years at Saint Gregory Parish preparing children for the sacraments.

In 1994, Beth was introduced to the Sisters of Saint Joseph Associates, which has been a most fulfilling and faith-filled part of her life’s journey. The Associates and the Sisters have opened her eyes to seeing herself as God sees her and seeing others as God sees them. This relationship with the Sisters and the Associates has transformed all areas of her life.
