The new C enter replaces G eorge T. M adison H all that currently resides on the site. The C ollege of Liberal Arts C enter is five stories and w ill prom ote collaboration, practice, display, studying, and hangout, specializing in a variety of needs for the diverse college’s program needs. The three departm ents w ithin the building include School of C om m unication, School of H istory and Social Science, and School of Literature and Language. The program m atic m akeup of the building is divided through a hierarchy of opacities and scales that allow for natural light to pour in w here granted. The layered m aterials define the push and pull of the slightly offset angular form al gestures and turn the interior into a series of textural thresholds. Light is the driving m aterial being diffused through clerestories, louvers, or saw tooth roofs to create m om ents of public v ersus private. In order for users to experience circulation of the building in an intentional order, the facades vary in m ateriality to express their interdisciplinary connections to one another and grab the interest of students and faculty interacting w ith the building, pushing them to w ant to experience other pieces of the journey. The three distinct form s of v aried size and m ateriality com e together from different angles to signify the interdisciplinary approaches of C O LA and further accentuate the connectedness betw een the different styles and m ethods of learning. The glow ing Tenets of Tech are announced to cam pus and visitors arriv ing up the hill w alking along the w estern portion of the site to exem plify the attributes that C O LA schools striv e to achieve. The rusted copper box w ith a green glass louver facade floats above the dense private program m atic lim estone section to raise classroom s and offices of different scales, higher, to prov ide view s of the quad. The ability for m axim um flexibility w ithin the center is crucial to allow ing students to bond; w hether that be w ith study lounges, furniture, classroom s, labs, or digital spaces that are interm ixed betw een the designated schools. The journey ends at a cov ered roof terrace that allow s for users to v iew the path in w hich they cam e from and see pieces of the designed landscape. Each space is m ulti-functional and allow s for cross-collaboration. The new C enter helps solidify this piece of Louisiana Tech’s cam pus w ith circulation brought to it and through it.
