Hello, my name is Katelyn Reynolds. I am currently an architectural designer at RDC., working remotely for the Washington DC office. I am a quick learner and I am open to all training and mentoring that will help me become more successful. I am pursuing NCARB licensure as I continue to gain Architectural Experience Program (AXP) hours. I graduated with my Masters in Architecture from Louisiana Tech University in May 2022.

EXPERIENTIAL MATERIALITY

SURFACE CONFIGURATIONS

The material selection of a building creates a compositional design experience that molds to the physical envelope of a structure. The most crucial means of experience is the material composition performing on the senses. Material associations can remind us of memories or past experiences based on the material’s sensory engagements: smell, tangible texture, sound absorbance, and visual appearance. A diverse material palette is the EMOTION of a building and must create an artistic configuration. Materiality is what connects the physical element of a building to the experiential element. The selected material palette for an exterior must set the diverse TONE of a building and create the essence as to what the interior will contain. This can be done through shading elements, openings, a mixture of light and dark tendencies, reflective areas, and textural distinctions. The exterior skin’s material must be the interceder of the experience the users have from the outside to the inside by welcoming in the users with a material that makes the entrance(s) stand out in contrast from the rest of the building’s elevations.

Tectonics define a building’s membrane by creating a distinctive experience, both externally and internally, using connections, intersections, and penetrations of defined materials. The material selection is not meant to be solely ornamental or decorative; each material must be more involved rather than primal. The effective use of LAYERING materials creates private and public segments in the program arrangement that either celebrate or hide material visibility. There must be contrast and hierarchy in the material selection used on both the exterior and interior to provide diversity. This allows for a push and pull perspective between the textural and tonal components. Contrast in texture works well in materials that are tonally similar, whereas tonal contrast highlights volume and simple form. Materials that have SYNERGY with one another are most specialized in developing the interior of a building’s simple formal gestures. There must be give and take between the layers of materials to reveal circulation routes and THRESHOLDS within the program of the building. Layering also highlighs intentional moments that go beyond defining a circulatory path.

LIGHT INTENTIONALITY

Working through layers, light is the basis of all materials that drives the materials within any sort of spatial experience. Light being let into a space through the use of glazing allows the users to experience circulation of the building in an intentional order. Materials must be POROUS to allow light in that can define paths within a building by highlighting interactions of materials that are collectively a series of varied surfaces.

Light that enters the building is diffused with the use of glazing transparency variances that allow for amplification, dampening, and color shifting to create moments of dark and light. Views that are meant to be framed affect where corresponding materials will be placed. This outlines where exactly the exterior can be seen based on the interior programmatic arrangement of window and curtain wall configuration.

Intentional use of glass transmits to the proper circulation route that light creates. Through the glazing choices of the building’s form, light enters the space and plays across the various TEXTURAL surfaces of the interior layers. There are limitations of where light enters and where it is blocked from entering in order to blur the boundaries of light and darkness. Light is an intentional driver of the experiential design in and out of the building’s envelope.

CENTER FOR COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AT LA TECH: SITE PLAN Ruston, Louisiana The growing College of Liberal Arts is in need of a new facility to replace George T. Madison Hall that will promote professional growth and collaboration between students and faculty through the integration of modernized research facilities and classrooms. The objective is to bring excitement back to the site that is a gateway between the rest of the College of Liberal Arts buildings and acts as a central hub extending off the quad, significant to the campus. With three schools being represented in the new center under the College of Liberal Arts, the idea of collaboration is imperative and efficient for students to generate coordination while sharing knowledge, research, and experience.

ATLAS: PLASTIC PLANET Pacific Ocean The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest accumulation of plastic debris located off the coast of California. Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic objects and particles (bottles, bags and microbeads) that adversely affect wildlife, habitats, and humans.

Ocean bound, social plastic packaging is created by businesses who make the choice to leave a negative impact on the planet. Fish ingest small pieces of plastic due to their continuous uptake of water.

Microplastics make their way into the next level of the food chain when other animals eat the fish. This cycle continues all the way up to the top of the food chain. Single-use plastics are a key contributor to the world’s pollution epidemic. Plastics do not biodegrade, they break up into tiny pieces. Upcycling and reusing are two of many ways to take action. Our ecosystems are crying out for help.

PORT O’PLASTIC Pacific Ocean Plastics are continuing to enter our oceans each day, creating a systemic problem within the American culture of consumerism. My proposal utilizes a plastic eating machine that recycles microplastics into an entirely different material. Port O’ Plastic is based on four phases: research, accumulation, fabrication and results. The proposal has three main aims - Cleaning oceans from a gigantic amount of plastic waste; Creating new land; Constructing a sustainable habitat. With the property expansion, the staff was given 51 acres to work with, over the next 25 years to effectively create a master plan with a variety of new facilities.

Duties: -Created zones of property designated to certain activities -Came up with new ideas to place around camp for kids to engage with

DESIGN BUILD: ART CABIN Camp Alabama - Choudrant, Louisiana The 2020 Design Build renovation of Parnell Cabin allowed for a creative art space for children with disabilities. The name AS1 is representative of being inclusive in that any kid with any disability can create art projects all together. Once inside the art cabin, the differences among the kids no longer matter. The cabin is a creative space allowing for any range of imagination.

Duties: -Came up with a variety of cabin shemes, floor plans, ideas for a new path leading up to the entrance -Researched ADA requirements for ramps, door widths, etc.

-Helped with construction document set for demolition and build of the art cabin -Started to de-construct the existing cabin, the COVID-19 pandemic began 2 weeks into the built portion of the project.

ULL LABORATORY SCHOOL Lafayette, LA The leading goal throughout the lab school was to refurbish elementary learning spaces in order to make them more effective in aiding critical thinking, independence, and communication.

Skills related to research, organization, problem-solving, and the mastery of technology are significant assets. The exposure to different rooms helps to promote a variety of teaching styles with the use of flexible furniture. The integration of natural wetlands into the campus allows a closer tie not only to the city’s sustainability efforts, but also the restoration and protection of local wildlife ecosystems.

ANALOG WORK With the mythological city of Fedora as a conceptual framework, the representations reveal themselves as an interpretation of the city. This project was inspired by Italo Calvino’s, Invisible Cities. Fedora is known as the city of unfinished desires.

Medusa represents a muse, a feminist symbol. The composition tells a story as some of the images are used as foreground while others as background. The focus on juxtaposition and creative orientation create a fantastic and bizarre city that is in line with the mythological plot.

BUILDING BRIDGES REHABILITATION CENTER Las Vegas, NV // ACSA 2021 Steel Competition Entry Building Bridges Rehabilitation Center is a place of refuge and safety for victims of human trafficking in Las Vegas, Nevada. The facility’s purpose is to provide a holistic approach to restoring the physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological health of trafficking victims, helping them live independent lives.

This process begins with a safe place to live and focuses on social skills, life skills, and vocational development. The program reactivates community life with outdoor and recreational areas while providing a voice to the unseen through prevention and educational resources geared towards the public, creating a duality of purpose. Signage will be a common theme throughout the facility’s resource areas, pulling from the established Las Vegas scenery and becoming a beacon of light across the United States. The architecture and symbolism became interconnected allowing for a porous programmatic layout surrounding a central void.

RIB PROJECT Ruston, Louisiana 12-rib design-build project designed around planar materials as a skin and surface relationship. The use of joinery relates to “architectonic” scale and proportion. The transverse repetition is seen as one rib and is repeated in different scales, which provides a complexity of form and space. The design includes shading devices and benches for the users to enjoy. Conceptually, this project was focused around density and movement. The cluster concept provides the users with a communal sense.

3D PRINTED HOMES Innovation rarely touches those who need it most. The future of 3D printed homes is a distinct advantage allowing for quick construction of low-cost permanent housing for the world’s homeless population of 150 million people. The printing process eliminates most of the construction waste that typical processes cause meaning they can be produced with roughly zero waste. Layer by layer, a printer extrudes beads of LavaCrete, which is a proprietary cement blend, until the walls are structured completely. The intersection of innovation and social impact can be seen through the affordability that the housing units create as the reduced costs would translate right into the idea of affordable housing for the poverty-stricken communities.

PHOENIX HUB RECREATION CENTER Florida Polytechnic University - Lakeland, FL The proposal for a sustainable Student and Recreation Center is guided by the COTE Top 10 strategies and designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new development is approximately 65,000 square feet, covering 4 floors. Within the recreational areas of the building, some of the program sectors include weights + cardio, multipurpose studios, locker rooms, bouldering, sports gyms, and an indoor track. Within the student center divisions of the building there are food vendors and seating, a lecture theater, classrooms, along with a variety of study spaces. The sustainable features throughout the building include zeroscaping, rainscreen siding, green roofs, PV panels, and cross ventilation. The strong visual and physical ties to nature will be encapsulated using transparencies meant to draw visitors and students along this journey to ultimately arrive at the new social hub intersection. The conceptualization of the building is based on a set of rules allowing for a continued datum along the façade.

The push and pull hierarchy formulates a contrast in building materials based on the private versus public interior spaces.

MAORI SPIRITUAL MUSEUM Kerikeri, New Zealand

Slab/Shear Wall

Embodies the element of aether. The site was selected based on the Marae, the Maori meeting grounds. The site forms multiple views to prioritize within the design. Specifically, looking out over the water and the burial mound out towards the peninsula. The entrance is placed on the curve of the original walking trails.

This building is composed of three distinct fluid forms. Mauri is the life force corresponding with spiritual practices of Maori Culture. Mana is the spiritual power and energy flow within the Mauri. Tapu is the spiritual restriction within the nature based realm. Each form represents one of these spiritual beliefs. The top two segments have glass and steel to create a sense of solid vs. void. The skin is kinetic, allowing for different amounts of light in the interior.
