ANNUAL REPORT
2014 - 2015
From the H ea dm as te r : I am delighted to introduce another successful review of the work of the St Albans School Foundation and would like to begin by thanking everyone who has supported the School so generously over the last year. We are grateful for the advice, expertise and time which you share with us; these are just as important to us as the very valuable financial support that many members of our community provide. I am delighted that so many recognise the importance and value of the work of the Development Office to the benefit of current and future students. The key aim of the Development Office is to build a supportive community around the school in all areas, and to support both our academic work and co-curricular activities. As you will read, the Foundation continues to provide vital funds to support our Bursary students, as well as supporting a number of special projects across the School. The St Albans School Foundation was set up as a registered charity and oversees the fundraising efforts of the school. We are keen to keep in touch with you via regular communications and updates, but will always try to ensure that these are relevant and interesting. We have robust data protection policies in place and I would ask that you contact the Development team if you have any queries about our communications programme. I hope to have the pleasure of meeting you in the near future at one of our events and my renewed thanks for your continued support. Jonathan Gillespie
St A l b a ns Scho ol Fou n d ation, in Brie f:
Since its inception in 948, St Albans School has been able to grow and adapt thanks to the generosity and support of Old Albanians, current and former parents and friends of the School. The St Albans School Foundation was established in 2008 with the aim of raising funds in support of the School in four main areas: The Bursary Fund, which allows us to offer a St Albans School education to bright and motivated young people who would be unable to take up a place here without financial assistance. Capital Developments, which make up the long-term masterplan of building projects for the School site.
Hardship Fund, which supports students who may otherwise have been forced to leave the School part-way through their time here due to changes in family circumstances. The Fund also provides students receiving 100% bursary funding with extra support towards the cost of trips, uniform and sports kit, books and even school meals where required.
Special Projects, which provides funds for developments with a real and immediate benefit to School life.

Bu rs ary F un d :
The St Albans School Bursary Fund was created to allow pupils the opportunity to go to the School they deserve, rather than the one they can afford. OAs from the pre-1970s era will remember the vital support pupils received from the Direct Grant Scheme. Our Bursary Fund is in existence to allow accessibility for all families – offering a first-class education to the brightest pupils, regardless of their parents’ financial circumstances. Thanks to generous donations from Old Albanians, parents and supporters, 56 pupils in 2014-2015 received bursary support, with 27 having their fees remitted completely. This is a significant achievement but in spite of this success, we regret that each year we are disappointing deserving pupils whose family have insufficient funds. To support the Bursary Fund, please see the attached donation form.
Sp e c i al P roj e cts :
The Foundation has invested ÂŁ21,186 in special projects throughout the School during 2014 and 2015. The criteria for selecting these projects was based on a demonstrable and immediate impact on our students. Here are some examples of the special projects funded in 2014 to 2015 by the Foundation: Micropipettes, electronic balances and PH meter for the Biology Department Funding from the St Albans School Foundation has allowed the Biology Department to purchase a number of pieces of new practical apparatus this year. These included a pH meter (used to allow our students to investigate the acidity of solutions and how this affects biological reactions), some electronic balances and micropipettes (used to very accurately transfer small volumes of liquid, down to 1/1000th of a millilitre). Together these have allowed us to increase our practical provision for students, helping improve the opportunity of our students to develop their hands on Biology skills. James Lockhart, Head of Biology
3D Printers for the Design Technology Department The acquisition of the 3D printers has opened up new possibilities in terms of complexity and accuracy in relation to the manufacturing of component parts for project work at all levels. The students have been very keen to explore the options available and many have already made use of the technology in their current coursework. The printers have also been invaluable in highlighting modern forms of manufacturing, demonstrating how technology has opened up new possibilities in the design world. Gary Calvert, Head of Design Technology
New Hymn Books for Abbey Having the new hymn books has given us the opportunity to expand our repertoire and enable us to be more seasonal in the hymns we use in our Abbey assemblies. The high quality of the books will also ensure that they will endure for years to come. Chris Pines, Chaplain
Chemicals cupboard for Chemistry The new cupboard has significantly increased our safe storage capacity and means risks associated with transporting chemicals from outside storage have been minimised. Our technicians are now able to deliver chemicals for demonstrations and practicals with much shorter notice and greater flexibility, enhancing the teaching and learning experience of pupils. Kwasi Owusu, Head of Chemistry
A donor ’s p ers p e cti v e : I enjoyed my time at St Albans School immensely and made some very close friendships. After my time as a pupil, I have been very impressed with the progress the School has made and as such, I am very happy to contribute towards the Foundation, particularly towards the Bursary fund.” Richard Baines OA 1989
I was very fortunate to attend St Albans School during the years of the direct grant scheme. The School’s combination of excellent academic teaching with a wide range of extra-curricular activities stood me in very good stead for the future. I am keen to ensure other students have the opportunities which I did - hence my commitment to supporting the School.” Kevin Tuffnell OA 1978
My time at St Albans School was a defining part of my life and crucial in shaping my career and social path in years to come. I feel passionately about the pupils of today having the very best facilities available to them, giving them the best possible start in life, and framing aspirations. For this reason, I have chosen to support the School’s capital projects programme.” Tony Dalwood OA 1989
Leav i ng a Leg ac y :
Leaving a legacy to the St Albans School Foundation can be a simple and tax-effective way of making a significant impact. It enables those who are ‘asset-rich’ rather than ‘cash-rich’ to make a valuable contribution to future generations of pupils. Leaving a gift in your will is easier to do than you might think. Simply add a codicil or bequest as a revision, with suggested wording available on request (we suggest taking legal advice). All those who leave a gift to the School are accepted as members into the Gateway Society, enjoying exclusive events and a silk tie when you join. For more information or to request a copy of our legacy brochure, contact the Development office on 01727 515187 or development@st-albans.herts.sch.uk
I experienced seven wonderful years at St Albans School and received a first-class education. I believe wholeheartedly in supporting the education of future generations and I feel honoured to give back to the Foundation via my will Mike Newell, Film Director, OA 1960, Gateway Society Member
