HAMPTON + NIKE = BETTER TOGETHER Project Purpose Local Cincinnati design firm FRCH challenged the students of UC DAAP’s Interior Design program to propose a collaboration with hotel chain Hampton Inn. I chose to pair Nike with the brand in an attempt to create a hotel that caters to those who want to constantly better themselves, even when travelling for holidays or business. This collaboration was inspired by Nike’s ad campaign at the time, #BetterForIt, which encouraged people of all ages, shapes and sizes to get active and stimulate healthy behaviours.

The fusing of the brands would create a hotel that allows travellers to eat better, train better, and relax better while living an on-the-go lifestyle. Some key features of this project include the bar and cafe area, which provide mainly healthy and wholesome food and beverage options, the gym which has a small Nike retail section and on-staff trainers, and the guestrooms which are designed to induce a sense of calmness for a good night’s sleep. Nike’s clothing lines played a large part in inspiring the design for all spaces.

Site & Context

Parameters

I chose to place this collaborative hotel in Portland, OR, right next to the home of Nike’s headquarters. Portland is also one of the healthiest and most body-positive cities in the US, making it a prime destination for like-minded guests who wish to maintain healthy standards when traveling.

The project must fit into Hampton Inn’s standard plan and adhere to their core values, referred to as “Hamptonality.” The public spaces are inspired by fun, playful materials that remind guests of sports & physical activity, while the guestrooms themselves are inspired by wellness retreats in order to create a balance of activity and relaxation.

ONESIGHT BY LUXOTTICA

Let’s c “We won’t stop until the world can see” OneSight by Luxottica recruited the third year students of the University of Cincinnati Interior Design program to assist in carrying out this mission of achieving global vision. The purpose of this project is to design an eye care facility that can be implemented anywhere in the world. We began with three locations in Rwanda, Africa: Huye, Kibuye, and Kigali. These three plans are cohesive and related to the concept so that future sites may refer back to them when making design decisions. Each vision care center has a reception area, a prescreen/triage area, waiting space before the eye exam, exam rooms, at least one doctor’s office, and storage. We have designed a set of standard key elements to be placed in each plan. Our objective with these elements is to maintain a simple and clean atmosphere to make the patients feel comfortable and confident. Local materials for the Rwandan clinics include Blue Gum Eucalyptus and bamboo.

ONESIGHT IN RWANDA Four classmates (including myself), plus one professor traveled to Rwanda alongside some native Rwandans in December, 2016. The purpose of this three-week excursion was to survey 8 hospitals across the country and fit our designs into them using local materials.

We also produced guide books for the local craftspeople to reference in building the cabinets, desks, and storage units.

ONESIGHT IN RWANDA The process for our work began with handsurveying an empty space in each hospital, allocated by the medical professionals as an optometry centre. Three of us measured and one sketched. The findings were taken into AutoCAD to produce accurate drawings, then altered to fit the new layouts, including all necessary space and equipment for the new clinics. Finally, the casegoods were designed in AutoCAD and SketchUp and placed into a pitcures-only guide for local Rwandans to apply to future clinics.

“DAYBREAKER is an early morning dance movement around the world and growing. We start with a one hour yoga & fitness experience and then dance with reckless abandon for two hours before work.”

The basis of DYBRKR would be adapted to suit the college lifestyle: moving the workout/party sessions to Friday and Saturday nights, with a “bar” serving electrolyte-boosting, alcoholfree mocktails. Outside of the weekends, the space would operate as a rotating gym, offering unique fitness classes to those who sign up. A gear shop would provide relevant equipment for rent or purchase and clothing for purchase. Finally, the “bar” would also serve healthy snacks, smoothies, fresh juices, and other smart beverages.

The site: Over The Rhine, a gentrified neighborhood in Cincinnati, OH, is home to many breweries, clubs, bars, and restaurants. With a young demographic and a decent public transit system, the need for an energetic and central fitness space is great. DYBRKR would certainly flourish in this area, pulling in crowds from the University of Cincinnati, Xavier, Mt. St. Joseph’s, and other local colleges. The existing Rhinegeist building, a massive brick warehouse now used as a brewery, would be the perfect place to house the permanent home for DYBRKR. Interior of project site: existing brewery

URBAN CONSERVATION: TRANENT, UK Project Purpose The aim of this project was to understand the character of the Conservation Area of Tranent and to propose improvements for its sustainable development.

Methodology The project was carried out by six students from different academic and professional backgrounds – architecture and urban planning, art history, interior design, tourism and grants management.

The authors undertook a systemic analysis of Tranent’s Conservation Area by studying relevant planning documents of the council, researching history, urban development, topography, use, streetscape, community and architectural character of the town. This was supplemented by various publications, photos and maps, several study visits and carrying out multiple on-site surveys. The survey data was collected and placed into Quantum GIS to graphically understand the development and components of Tranent. This research and its applications led us to propose boundary readjustments for the Conservation Area, as well as include recommendations to enhance the tangible and intangible heritage within the boundary walls.
