MISSISSIPPI RIVER MUSEUM PROJECT OBJECTIVES The project consisted in designing a museum that embodies and showcases an element of nature (water, air, fire, earth or aether).

SOFTWARE USED

PROJECT TYPE

Rhino AutoCAD Lumion Photoshop

Group project (2 students)

01

CONCEPT The element chosen for the museum is water. The form of the building results from research on the Mississippi river that is known for its changing courses. Formally, the museum mimics the flowing nature of water torrents with overlapping forms that look like they are being flown away. The project also explores the relationship of water and earth. With the building extending on 2 sites, the Mississippi River Museum is eroded by the highway and train track running underneath. Circulation through the building is designed so that the main entrance to the building is on the second. After checking in, occupants will take the ramp up to the third floor where all the galleries are. From the history fo the Mississppi river to the interactive galleries, visitors experience the flowing nature of the building.

FLORIDA RECREATION & STUDENT CENTER PROJECT OBJECTIVES The project consisted in designing a building that operate as a recreation facility and a student center, as well as addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and sustainable design

CONCEPT The building is located in Lakeland, Florida on the campus of Florida Polytechnique University. With 27,000 sq.ft, the building is designed to serve as recreation and student center. The site has direct connection to the campus central body of water, and visual connection to the student dorms and Santiago Calatrava Innovation, Science and Technology Building. The public part of the building features a lobby, 2 indoor soccer fields, a weight and cardio room and a rock climbing wall on the first floor, and an indoor running track on the second floor. The third floor is the more private with a food seating area, a lecture theater, a classroom and study spaces. The building’s design works to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by having outdoor shaded workout spaces for students who do not feel comfortable working out in an enclosed space, and an informal study space that has study booths for students who would like to stay away from crowds.

OUTDOOR WORKOUT SPACE

NATURAL LIGHT

The outdoor shaded space is a great area for working out away from crowding. It is not only shaded from the southern sunlights, but it is also ventilated by the eastern wind.

The sawtooth skylights face north, therefore shading the space against direct sunlights, and provide maximum natural light for the space.

PERSPECTIVE SECTION

VISUAL TRANSPARENCY Double height spaces provide visual connection between programs. Also, the skylights allow the hot air to escape and provide natural light for the spaces below.

PV PANELS The building features sawtooth skylights with 28 degrees to capture sunlight through out the year and generate sustainable energy.

FACADE South and West facades are extruded with the window glass pushed to the inside to filter direct sun light and sun heat.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN Nature is incorporated outside and inside the building and is part of the experience as the green wall wraps around programs and guide the occupants throughtout the building.

GENTRIFICATION BY FIRE The Eidetic image and map show the issues that the minority population of Hoboken was facing between 1979 and 1985. Due to the gentrification of the neighborhood that attracted affluent new residents, Hoboken faced population displacement. Arson for profit was a popular phenomenon as landlords set their tenements on fire to drive out the low-income population.

FROM CHOCOLATE CITY TO VANILLA CITY The city of Washington DC was once called chocolate city because of its large population of african americans. But since the 1970s, that percentage has been lowering mostly due to gentrification and population displacement. As new affluent residents move in, rent increases and the low-income population have no choice but to find new affordable places to live in.

SAFETY NET HOSPITALS Safety net hospitals are healhcare facilities that focus on the low-income population of an area, an provide medical care to these communities. These hospitals are vastly affected by the gentrification of poor areas and many of them have been facing closure, making healthcare inaccessible to the communities living below the poverty line. The eidetic images illustrate the closure of two safety net hospitals, Hahnemann University Hospital and Providence Hospital.

BRONZEVILLE REGENERATION The proposal aims to redesign an area of a neighborhood to fight its gentrification. The location chosen is Bronzeville, Chicago, US. The new community area will celebrates and preserves the culture of the african american population of Bronzeville. The project proposed a homeless shelter that will provide a warm and comfortable place for the homeless of Bronzeville. The public park will add more greenery and will be a place for physical activities. The community can buy fresh meat and vegetable from the new food market. The outdoor restaurant will be a place for people to find local and cultural food, and for local artists to be featured. Finally, the art gallery will celebrate Bronzeville culture and art.

CONCEPT The main focus of the UL Lab School’s curriculum is hands-on experience through project based teaching methods. Therefore, the building is divided into two learning communities (K to 2nd grade and 3rd to 5th grade). At the center of the learning houses is a highly flexible innovation lab where students have a direct practical application of the lessons they learned. The project utilizes hexagonal shapes throughout the building design. The hexagonal panels on the building facade are offset from each other so to create levels of shadows and make the building more dynamic. In the library, the panels are extruded to create book shelves.
