EXPERIMENTAL THEATER Arch 225 Winter 2019 William Hartman

The design process consisted in making a conceptual object that embobies the words “geometric” and “hierarchical”. The interactive artifact directed the design decisions for the the experimental theater, its interaction with the light and the shadow it casts.

The conceptual object is an ivestigation of light and shadow relationships. It focuses on hierarchy of geometric volumes, the shadow that bigger volumes cast on smaller ones, and the shades on different surfaces.

The main focus of this project is to design a laboratory school that will welcome children aged 6 to 12 and is organized into two learning houses (K to 2nd grade and 3rd to 5th grade). The school focuses on hands-on experience through project based teaching methods and the building provides lots of natural ights and visual access to other spaces as to convey a feeling of inclusion and enhance students’ productivity. Flexibility has been one of the main design

goals and influenced the use of hexagonal spaces. Section BB

SECOND FLOOR PLAN 1’-0” = 1/16” SECOND FLOOR

The Mississippi River Museum is the product of research and interpretation of the history of the Mississippi river, especially all its different courses over time. The building formally mimics the overlapping torrents of rivers. Also, the building’s form imitates the phenomenon of erosion: the ground and second floors are flown away from the third floor while the building looks eroded by the highway and train tracks that run underneath. I worked on the form, the floor plans, the sections, the occupation load and areas, and took the pictures before handing them over for rendering. SECTION CC 1’-0” = 1/16”

The design fuses landscape and architecture in a one-level building that will include permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, a 150-seat auditorium, music rehearsal rooms, a restaurant, a media library, administrative offices and an active landscape. Herning’s prominent relationship with textiles and art formed the inspiration for the design concept. This 1960s building was designed in the form of a shirt collar. It was the interaction between the factory owner and Arte Povera artists such as Piero Manzoni that enabled such a special collection of art to exist in Herning." A fabric theme is carried throughout the project from the shape of the building which resembles a collection of shirtsleeves viewed from above, through the wall finishes. Fabric tarps were inserted into the formwork to yield a fabric texture to the buildings exterior walls of white concrete.
