2024 Ride for Helen Cycle Ride

Charity cycle ride through Essex countryside on 12th May 2024 for all ages. Helen Rollason Cancer Charity will again be holding its popular “Ride For Helen” cycle rides through the lovely Essex countryside. Now in its 11th year, the event is on Sunday 12th May 2024 and registration is open on the charity’s website here www.helenrollason.org.uk/event/ride-forhelen-essex

There are six cycling routes to suit all ages and capabilities: 6 miles, 15 miles, 30 miles, 50 miles, 65 miles and an exciting new 100 miles route for keen cyclists. All rides start and end in the grounds of The Crix, in Hatfield Peverel and they will be sign-posted and manned by volunteer marshals. There will be refreshment stops along the way and, in the grounds of The Crix, there will be entertainment, food and drink caterers, as well as first aid and mechanic support.

As well as enjoying a healthy day out in Essex, cyclists will be helping to raise funds to support local people living with cancer. If you don’t wish to cycle, you might like to help on the day as a volunteer. Contact the charity’s fundraising team on 01245 380719 for information about volunteering.

Zoe Jay, Head of Fundraising said: “Each rider will be supporting those living with cancer. With 1 in 2 of us facing a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime, we are so grateful to everyone that attends events like this either as a participant or a volunteer. We need to ensure that we continue to host successful fundraising events to enable us to be here to offer our vital support in the future”

Chris Dale, Group Managing Director at Vesta, the headline sponsor for the event said: “

Sadly, many of our team and families have been affected by cancer so the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity is both a cause close to our hearts as well as our community. It means a lot to us to be able to do our bit in support and help raise more awareness. We’re very proud to be part of it.”

Where to find defibrillators in Essex

A defibrillator gives a high energy shock to someone who is in cardiac arrest. It helps get the heart beating again when it has stopped.

Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time. The importance of these amazing devices, and knowing where to find them, cannot be understated.

You should always call 999 and begin CPR when someone is in cardiac arrest. Do not stop CPR to find a defibrillator. If possible, send someone else to find one.

Knowing the location of your nearest defibrillator is the first step in potentially saving someone’s life. Fortunately, the British Heart Foundation has created an online Defib Finder. (www.defibfinder.uk)

It lists a number of defibrillator sites in Essex. It is worth familiarising yourself with those nearest to your home and place of work. No formal training is required to use a defibrillator. Simple instructions come with every device.

The British Heart Foundation also provides comprehensive guidance about defibrillators and their usage available on www.bhf.org. uk/how-you-can-help/how-to-save-a-life/ defibrillators/understanding-defibrillatorswhat-they-are-and-how-to-use-them

Our Deputy Leader, Councillor Louise McKinlay, recently met with the East of England Ambulance service and a local resident to raise awareness around the use of defibrillators.

Fire Cadet recruitment opens in Essex

Have you got a young person at home in need of an exciting after school activity? Sign them up to the Fire Cadets scheme run by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

Applications have just opened for Fire Cadets, a nationally recognised three-year fire service focussed programme for young people aged 13 -17. The Service currently have 18 Fire Cadet Units based at Clacton, Dovercourt, Great Baddow, Harlow, Orsett and Southend.

During the programme, the Cadets take part in a variety of operational fire service activities aligned to the National Fire Cadet Award. These include hose running, ladder

Get your blood pressure checked

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), is a general term for conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels and causes 1 in 4 deaths in England.

High blood pressure is the largest single risk factor for CVD and can increase your risk of serious and potentially life-threatening health conditions, such as heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease and vascular dementia. However, as high blood pressure usually has no symptoms, it is estimated that 4.2 million people in England have high blood pressure without knowing it.

New data has revealed that worrying numbers don’t know the potentially fatal effects of high blood pressure – with four in 10 (41 per cent) unaware that, if left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, and over a fifth (22 per cent) being unaware that it can cause strokes and heart attacks.

pitching, pumping, breathing apparatus, search and rescue, first aid, control room procedures, science of fire and much more. Applications are open until 30th June, for a new cohort which will start the 40 week programme in September.

Christina Prior, Duke of Edinburgh Cadets and Business Support Assistant for the Service said: “Fire Cadets is an amazing programme for all young people. Not only does it equip individuals with firefighting skills, but it also empowers young people to become leaders and positive influencers within their communities.”

Fire Cadets also have the opportunity to work towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

Once the Cadets have completed their first year, they will demonstrate everything they have learned to their families and friends at a special “Passing-Out” Parade.

If you know a young person who would love to be a part of the Fire Cadets, you can apply at www.essex-fire.gov.uk/apply-to-be-afire-cadet

The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get a blood pressure test, which is a free, simple, non-invasive procedure.

If you’re aged 40 and over, you can get a free blood pressure check at your local participating pharmacy, without needing to book in advance.

Find a pharmacy that offers free blood pressure checks near you by searching “pharmacy blood pressure check” online or visit the NHS website at www.nhs.uk/conditions/blood-pressuretest

Wickford in Bloom

Spring has arrived and with it busy times for Wickford in Bloom.

The 4 new tree planters have arrived, plus a small mountain of compost to fill them. The new trees are due to arrive from King & Co soon and, at the time of writing, we are planning on moving the planters into place and planting the trees on 14th April. We will let the compost settle for a bit and top it up before we add the summer plants on 19th May. The trees selected are 1 each of Pyrus Chanticleer, Prunus Serrula Tibetica, Prunus Accolade and Amelanchier Lamarkii. They have been chosen for their compact nature, autumn colour and blossom and berries to provide food for birds and insects. We will continue to water them the first year to get them established and also feed them to ensure they grow nice and strong. All of this has been paid for by a grant from Essex County Council Locality Fund.

The grants we have been promised from Basildon Council and Wickford Town Council will be spent on a large 3 or 4 tier planter to go on the corner of Lower Southend Road, additional brackets and flowering baskets and extra saddle planters beyond the railway bridge in The Broadway and beginning of Runwell Road. Our plant selection this year will include upright Geranium, trailing ivy leaf Geranium, trailing Begonia and 2 different types of Petunias. The perfumed Surfina we planted last year received many compliments so we have included it again for this summer. I must admit that I am very excited to be able to have the big tiered planter as it will look spectacular when planted up.

16

But our group is not just about flowers as without our wonderful band of volunteers and friends none of this would happen. They do fetching and carrying, potting, growing, weeding, pruning, planting, painting and most of all watering, often lugging heavy containers of water from Market Lane up and down the High Street. To add to the floral displays the group urgently need another source of fresh water, preferably at The Broadway end of the town. Even if we have rain, not enough gets into the planters so we have to water twice a week all through the summer months. If anyone has a solution to this problem please let us know.

Robot pets bringing joy to residents in Essex

You may never have thought that robotic pets can have a therapeutic effect. However, a pilot being undertaken by the Essex County Council adult social care team in mid Essex is demonstrating that they can. The pets are being used to support people with learning difficulties and those with dementia.

The benefits of the pets include:

• providing company and companionship

• helping to reduce anxiety or agitation

• creating a sense of purpose

• increasing engagement through playing and talking

• supporting good communication and person-centred practice

Families and staff have already noticed benefits and seen the positive impact that the robot pets are making.

The pets are part of the ECC wider care technology offer, to see more visit www.essexproviderhub.org/caretechnology/care-technology

NHS to roll out ‘Martha’s Rule’

The head of the NHS has announced the rollout of ‘Martha’s Rule’ in hospitals across England from April, enabling patients and families to seek an urgent review if their condition deteriorates. The patient safety initiative is set to be rolled out to at least 100 NHS sites and will give patients and their families round-the-clock access to a rapid review from an independent critical care team if they are worried about their or a loved one’s condition.

This escalation process will be available 24/7 to patients, families and NHS staff, and will be advertised throughout hospitals, making it quickly and easily accessible.

The introduction of Martha’s Rule comes alongside other measures to improve the

identification of deterioration, including the rollout last November of a new early warning system for staff treating children.

New electric buses for Basildon

Basildon will receive £4.8 million from the Government for a fleet of electric buses. Together with First Bus, we have secured funding from the Department for Transport’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) 2 scheme. It will fund 55 electric buses in Basildon.

First Bus is additionally investing £25.8 million into the scheme. This will also be spent upgrading the Basildon bus depot. The buses are expected to be in place in late 2025. They will serve Basildon and the surrounding area.

Stay safe from fraudulent calls

Fraudsters often call or message people, pretending to be from their bank, other well-known and trusted companies, or even someone they know. They can be very convincing, particularly if they’ve already managed to get hold of some personal information, for example by looking on social

media. Having earned their victim’s trust, they often ask them to hand over confidential information, make a payment or give them access to their phone or computer.

Never take calls or messages like this at face value – always take time to stop, think and check if the caller or sender is who they say they are.

Government launches crackdown on mobile phones in schools

Mobile phones are set to be prohibited in schools across England as part of the government’s plan to minimise disruption and improve behaviour in classrooms.

New mobile phones in schools’ guidance issued on 19th February 2024 backs headteachers in prohibiting the use of mobile phones throughout the school day, including at break times.

By the age of 12, 97% of children have their own mobile phone, according to Ofcom. Using mobile phones in schools can lead to online bullying, distraction and classroom disruption which, in turn, can lead to lost learning time.

Schools will be supported to prohibit mobile phone use with examples of different approaches including banning phones from the school premises, handing in phones on arrival at school, and keeping phones securely locked away at school.

The move will bring England in line with steps taken by other countries who have restricted mobile phone use including France, Italy and Portugal.

More support for unpaid Carers in Essex

Essex County Council have launched a new five-year offer for the estimated 124,000 unpaid carers in the county.

The new and enhanced offer provides information and support to unpaid carers in Essex.

A key focal point of the new offer is a central online contact point for carers run by the Essex Wellbeing Service. People can also call 0303 303 9988 for information, advice and guidance.

More specialist support will be available from Action for Family Carers in west or north Essex.

In mid or south Essex it will be Carers First. This support includes:

• help with practical solutions to address specific challenges

• support of emotional wellbeing

• connecting carers with others in their position for mutual support

Alongside this new offer, the council has allocated £1.75million to support unpaid carers of all ages, through local projects.

We have worked with carers while developing the new offer. One of the carers involved is Peter Blackman from South Woodham Ferrers (pictured).

Peter has been a carer for his wife for around 25 years. He explains why working with carers to develop the support available has been so important. He said:

“It is really beneficial for carers to be involved in this kind of work. I feel that the council has listened to us and the ideas or concerns we have had have been heard.

“The new offer has taken into account what carers really want and need, it is now a much more personalised service. It has been a positive experience as I believe that by being involved it will help carers to get the best possible support for their own situation. We will be keeping a close eye on how this goes, monitoring performance and continuing to be critical friends.

“If you are looking after someone, there is help and support out there for you, you are not on your own.”

20

Susan, a carer from Tendring Village also gave her views and helped shape the new support offer.

Susan, who cares for her mother-in-law Pam (both pictured above), “It is really important for the opinions of carers to be taken into account when developing any services that can support them. This makes sure carers get the right support when they need it most. It is also really important for carers of all ages and from all situations to be included, which I am pleased has happened.

“Without feedback, the council won’t know what needs improving or how to fix things that aren’t working, I think this two-way dialogue has really helped develop a service that we hope will make a difference. It’s also encouraging that the council will continue to engage with us so that any concerns or issues are listened to.

“It is really hard sometimes to identify yourself as a carer, I didn’t call myself a carer for many years. If you are caring for a family member or friend, there is support available, please don’t struggle in silence.”

A carer can be a child, young person or adult.

What is a Garden by Janet Dunn©

It can be a rolling lawn to ride a sit on mower upon A yard of paving stones with pots of pansies and petunias

A place to sip your first cuppa of the day while listening to the birds singing you a merry morning as they play

A haven of memories of times gone by an apple tree that once grew bananas magically to make the grandkids’ eyes grow wide with wonder

Some shade upon a hot and sunny day green leaves to cool your fevered brow breeze blowing fan like leaves to relieve your troubled mind somehow

It can be your heart’s delight if messy country cottage or ordered borders, straight and true your garden reflects the truth of you

Public gardens for the masses to enjoy looked after by busy workers full of care to spread a carpet of sweet air and colours many hued to give many a mind some calm and act as a hush point to quieten noise and be a balm

Your garden is yours and mine is mine Big or small on window sill or by a roadside sign

All pleasure and life contained within the contours of a small green leaf

Scent and sight, light, rain and sun joy and peace, hard work and fun a garden brings each of these and more nature’s bounty, plants, weeds and all a tree can make us feel so small a humble daisy makes giants of us all

This newly created garden seeks to give a natural hug, to give some time, before the World you face

The imagination and the vision that you see before you here, has been a while in planning to fruition

Hours of dedication by our hardy volunteers has brought about this space with so much vision

We hope this beautiful area, as it develops and matures, provides some peace, some solace and wellbeing

Its aura and its layout will envelop and inspire, and we hope provide some comfort and warm feeling

We need to thank a lot of folk who have helped us in our plan, find funding for the benches, trees and flowers

So as one sits and takes it in, reflect on mother nature, and enjoy this space in all the seasons hours.

Please look out for future events on Facebook using the Events Tab.

We run our gardening groups every Wednesday and Saturday mornings (Saturdays will be resumed in the Spring) if you’d like to come along, no gardening experience necessary and there are tasks for all abilities. We have over a thousand members on our Facebook page, please pop down for a chat or help you would be most welcome

There are three car parks: Runwell Road (main entrance); Rettendon View and Highcliffe Road.

Bee Good Plot Competition 2024

Whether your school is just starting out or looking to develop an established garden, the Bee Good Plot Competition can help demonstrate the value of gardening, enriching the curriculum, teaching life skills and contributing to children’s mental and physical health.

This year it is all about the British Bee and how we can help by supporting these mini beasts that are so crucial to our ecosystem. Growing Communities (GC) is asking our busy bee helpers to create a bee haven for our buzzy little friends to feed, live and prosper.

The competition is open to all primary schools in Essex and requires teamwork. All we ask is for the children to think outside of the box with their plot design and encourage schools to promote wellness within their community so that children can explore and enjoy the natural world.GC has some exciting prizes to be won this year including literature for the classroom, Bee Good Hotel and the number one request via our Bee Good Survey that supersedes all other needs, gardening equipment!

To find out more and to enter the competition please visit: www.essexrcc.org.uk/our-work/growingcommunities or alternatively email: elizabeth.rose@essexrcc.org.uk

The Growing Communities project is managed by the Rural Community Council of Essex (RCCE).

Wickford Town

Oh What A Lovely War is an extraordinary theatrical journey bringing to life the folly, farce and tragedy of the First World War. Wildly satirical, visually stunning and deeply moving, it’s the musical that revolutionised modern theatre; an exhilarating, no-holdsbarred assault on the military incompetence and inconceivable disregard for human life the First World War has come to represent. Brimming with timeless songs, razor-sharp satire and high jinks, Oh What A Lovely War is a hilarious, heart-breaking snapshot of life for those caught in the crossfire of conflict, a unanimous voice from the trenches and a timely warning from the theatre of war itself. Now, more than ever, it holds a mirror up to the world and speaks to us all.

What to do in the garden in May

May has arrived and the days are getting warmer and longer.

Summer is on its way and it’s time to tidy up spring plants, plant out summer flowers and get planning for autumn.

Read on for a comprehensive list of garden jobs to get on with this month:

Timely Tips

1. Start planting out summer bedding plants towards the end of this month in warmer parts of the country.

2. Look after your finished spring bulbs for next year. Once they’ve gone over, resist the temptation to cut back the foliage. Instead, let it die and break down on its own and add liquid fertiliser all around the clumps.

3. Remember to open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days. You can also damp down your greenhouse on hot days to increase humidity and deter red spider mites.

4 Optimise your watering regime — watering early and late to get the most out of your water — and start collecting and recycling water whenever possible.

In the vegetable garden

• Sow basil in pots for the greenhouse or patio - this Mediterranean staple thrives in warm conditions.

• Sow runner beans and French beans undercover, sowing individually into module trays for planting out after the risk of frost has passed.

• Plant glasshouse tomato plants in beds or growing bags.

• Thin out direct-sown vegetables such as spinach, carrot and lettuce seedlings, then water the rows well.

• Pinch out the growing points of broad beans as soon as beans start to appear at the base of the plant to reduce the risk of blackfly attack.

Other jobs about the garden

• Apply lawn weedkiller to your lawn this month. Lower mower blades to their regular summer-cut height.

• Feed pond fish little and often.

• Clip evergreen hedges or low growing hedging now.

• Hang fly traps throughout the greenhouse to monitor levels of whitefly, thrips and other pests.

• Top up bird baths and bird feeding stations to encourage birds into your garden.

In the flower garden

• Sow basil in pots for the greenhouse or patio - this Mediterranean staple thrives in warm conditions.

• Sow runner beans and French beans undercover, sowing individually into module trays for planting out after the risk of frost has passed.

• Plant glasshouse tomato plants in beds or growing bags.

• Thin out direct-sown vegetables such as spinach, carrot and lettuce seedlings, then water the rows well.

• Pinch out the growing points of broad beans as soon as beans start to appear at the base of the plant to reduce the risk of blackfly attack.

In the fruit garden

• Protect strawberry plants with straw and netting.

• Harvest rhubarb, picking only one-third of the total amount of stems.

• Hang pheromone traps in apple trees to reduce codling moth.

Linda’s crossed the Atlantic, and SAVE THE DATE!

A month or so ago we told you about Linda Blakely and her attempt to row solo across the Atlantic. Well, she did it!

Linda left Gran Canaria on January 20th, which seemed a little extreme considering the size of the seas in the Atlantic at that time of year, but in theory the advantage is that the prevailing winds and tidal flows should help speed her along in attempting to break the record.

However, it was not to be; the huge seas capsized her completely at one point in the first few days, causing her to lose an oar and shortly afterwards swamped the boat and broke her other right-handed oar, so she rowed most of the way with two left-hand oars, as both. She managed to repair the boat but was most miffed to realise she had lost her favourite pink Ironman sun visor!

The continuous battering of the boat forced her to take a westerly route instead of south-westerly which would have taken her to the prevailing flows which would speed up her crossing. Rowing in shifts of 2 hours on, 2 hours off she slowly got clear of the worst of the weather afforded by the Eastern Atlantic and got into calmer waters and was able to turn South but the prospect of beating the record disappeared from her sights.

All through the voyage she was sending messages on her social media channels to keep everyone up to date with her progress and she encountered some hair raising moments, including when she realised that her boat was being followed by a marlin. It has been known for marlins and other swordfishes to attack and hole small boats in the Atlantic. Thankfully it lost interest after following her for a day.

There was also the time when her early warning system told her that she was directly in the path of a giant oil-tanker, who hadn’t seen her.

She rowed on through countless challenges too numerous to detail here (check out the full story on her Facebook page www.facebook.com/blakely.linda), and even celebrated her 50th birthday on the Atlantic, until she arrived close to her destination in Barbados. However, her challenges were not over; as she approached the island the prevailing winds were blowing her offshore and away from the marina she was aiming for, and for a while it looked as if she wouldn’t make it to shore without support, which would have invalidated her attempt. With a final push she managed to row directly onto a beach a mile or so down the coast to complete her feat.

Linda achieved her objective of £100,000 raised for the charity, and addressed the Rotary Club of Barbados shortly after her arrival. Rotary Wickford were pleased that the trip had been topped and tailed by a Rotary Club!

Funding for the new kits is one part of the council’s ongoing community safety work – they have also recently launched a new £100,000 Community Safety Initiatives Fund. Local groups can apply for grant funding to invest in initiatives that promote public safety. The aim is to benefit communities and address issues around violence and vulnerability.

Find Your Active Essex

As we wave goodbye to the winter months, it’s a perfect opportunity to reflect on what has worked or maybe what hasn’t in your active journey.

Being reflective and assessing these wellness choices can benefit the future when looking forward and planning ahead.

Daily wellness choices are important for leading a healthy lifestyle but not all movements and activities work for everyone. Identifying what fits into your lifestyle and what you enjoy is vital. For example, if you work in an office you may have started actively commuting to work or taking walking lunch breaks which can increase daily movement and improve physical and mental wellbeing.

If you have found something that works for you, like active travel, then the next step on your journey could be to involve other family members or colleagues in this active choice.

You could start a walking group within your workplace or start to get up

earlier so the whole family can actively travel together, which highlights how reflecting back on good choices can help looking forward.

Inspiring others to find their active could also relate to helping those on their career journey.

Working in the sport and physical activity sector is extremely fulfilling and for those who have experience and a story to tell, it’s great to share this with others as it could help a young person map out their career path. We’d love to encourage as many people as possible to consider employment in the sport and physical activity sector. Physical activity can be life changing and many who work within the sector can attest to the wide range of benefits being active has for our physical and mental wellbeing. Being able to help others start their active journey is just the first step!

Inspire others this spring to find what works for them! Go online and visit www.activeessex.org/find-your-active
